Little Naraku

A rather sizeable district located at the Gluttony ward of New Ch’thon, Little Naraku is best described as an Asiantown where many demons of Eastern descent calls home. While some are those who have died but was accidentally sent to New Ch’thon instead of Naraku by Graysen, the city’s own gaudily dressed and perpetually overworked lynx Reaper, others are natural-born demons and sinners that have immigrated there from the Eastern underworld for various reasons. Relatively speaking, the district is just as chaotic as the rest of the city. Although there are civilians who would want nothing more than live out their (after)lives in peace, it’s not uncommon to hear about feuds and conflicts that involves cultivators and practitioners of Eastern magick, ex-soldiers with unresolved wounds, and members of the yakuza, triad, and simple gangsters.

And yet, despite their differences, most, if not all, of the people of Little Naraku share a mutual distrust for New Ch’thon Enterprise, a megacorp that rules over the city with an iron fist and profits from the misery of its denizens. Before Liu took up the mantle of being LN’s leader and protector, occupying his position was one Akira Futoshi. A lowly member of an equally unremarkable yakuza family in life, Akira met an unceremonious end when he got ran over by a speeding truck while running away from the family’s furious patriarch, who caught him red-handed when he tries to seduce his girlfriend in secret. An opportunistic cad until the bitter end, he made the most out of his afterlife, even it means selling out to NCE on a regular basis, all the while spinning one excuse after another and surrounding himself with as many yes-men as possible.

However, he wasn’t able to anticipate Liu Yang-fei, whom he views as nothing more but a blind and harmless former mob boss fit only as a stoolpigeon, betraying him and staging a coup of his own. Instead of executing the defeated Akira, Liu opted to exile him and his remaining loyalists from Little Naraku, warning them to never show their face in LN again if they value their lives. Nowadays, there are only a few who had the curiosity to wonder Akira’s current whereabouts.

At the present day, business at Little Naraku is more-or-less stable, and often times prospers under Liu’s stewardship. Putting his experiences as a mob boss to good use for the sake of his newfound community, he was able to “negotiate” with NCE to give the district more power to govern itself. It may not be completely cut off from the rest of New Ch’thon, but any unscrupulous corporat who fail to pay attention to their manners and surroundings may find themselves, without a warning, cut down by a scarred tanuki in samurai armor who often accompanies Liu as though he was the dragon’s shadow.

Poem of the Night: The Afterlife Justice System is Broken I

There are several circles in Hell,

ones that Dante Inferno never bothered with.

One circle as such is a Chinatown.

Or really, as one of its young inhabitant Linh calls it,

An “Asiantown” because non-Chinese have settled there

Linh is Vietnamese American

unable to speak any Asian tongue.

One day, she finds the lump of a 

hyperventilating woman, Elena

Though Elena died 

because American healthcare failed 

Linh, her story is more complicated.

She resides with her father, who was killed by an STD

and poor American healthcare.

And so Linh lets Elena crash over.

Elena was a lapsed Catholic

But Elena had the cultural/religious credentials 

to apply for Earth visitation. 

Elena applies for a Die De Los Muertos pass

She's able to drag Linh along as her plus one.

Linh comes along, claiming she’s 

coming for the free Earthly food, the taste 

of unrotten carcasses from Hell’s cafe

But really, Linh wants to break out,

and see her Mother

And tell her Mother to stop praying for her.

After such a visit, Linh and Elena conspire to 

become employed as Demons,

hoping for the perks of wandering the Earth.

Penny for your thots

(I watched the latest episode for Helluva Boss season 2 yesterday. The feels I got from the revelation of Loona's past were painful, and I like the heartwarming moment she has with Octavia. However, I can't quite forgive the episode's dip in quality at certain points. It just...has the feeling of getting rushed out of the door before it was ready, meaning that some important plot points might be left unresolved or left for future episodes to unravel. All I can hope is that it only happens once, and it isn't an indicator of the show's dip in quality in the future.)

(However, despite its flaws, the universe Vivziepop has created did urge me to embrace my strength as a creator of art, even if the road seems hazy at the present. I'm glad about it, and I hope I can continue on with concepts that haven't been explored yet, like the presence of an Asiantown in an otherwise fictional depiction of the Western Hell popularized by Dante in his Divine Comedy. I would like to embrace my heritage as a Chinese-Vietnamese and learn about my rich culture instead of turning away from it.)
