Plus One
Scarlett Johansson x fem!reader
Warnings: just fluff and simping over Scarlett-
It was fashion week and Scarlett planned on going to the Prada Milan fashion week show today. She could take a plus one and of course, she’s taking her girlfriend to the very special event.
“Scarlett! Where’s my hairbrush!” You yelled out to Scarlett. “I don’t know honey but check the bathroom!” She yelled back. You went into the bathroom and there was your hairbrush sitting on the sink. You smiled to yourself and finished getting ready.
You went down the stairs in your outfit and Scarlett was staring at you which made your face go red. “Why are you looking at me like that.” You said shyly and she smirked at you. “Because I’m looking at the most beautiful girl on the planet.” She confessed as she took you in her arms.
You shook your head and smiled at her “no baby that’s you” as you brushed your nose against hers. “Not possible…” she whispers against your lips as she kisses you slowly and sensually. She pulled away moments later, leaving you breathless. “Wow…” you said as you were trying to snap out of your daze while scar giggles at you.
“Come on babygirl. We need to go ahead and go.” She says as she links your arm around hers and y’all head to the limo that was waiting on the both of you. The two of you went into the limo and you rested your head on her shoulder as the driver put the car into drive and off y’all went.
When the two of you arrived, cameras and people were everywhere. You could barley see as there was so many flashing of the lights and cameras but you just held Scarlett’s hand as she went through the crowd, into the building. She met some some costars and friends as you stood there awkwardly beside her but she introduced you to them if you haven’t already met them before. Scarlett made sure you felt included and not an outcast and she did a damn good job at it.
“Im gonna go take some pictures okay baby?” She says as she kisses your lips softly and walks away, swaying her hips making you weak in the knees. You watched her pose and take pictures so naturally. I mean, she is a extremely famous actress so she can probably do this in her sleep, but it still amazes you every time, how elegant she is.
After a few pictures were taken, Scarlett waves you over to come to her. You looked at her confused but she still kept waving you over. You slowly walked over to her and questioned on why she wanted you over here “because you are my girlfriend you dork, I want us to take pictures together.” She said with an obvious tone. Your mouth made a O shape and you understood now which made Scarlett giggle.
When the two of you were done taking pictures, it was time to sit down as the fashion show was about to start. You sat with Scarlett and Scarlett sat beside Wes Anderson. Scarlett put her hand on your thigh and kissed your cheek lovingly. “Thank you for coming with me babygirl. I really appreciate it and you.” She gushed at you which made your face go red. “Of course baby. I would do anything for you.” You replied and Scarlett smiled big at your response. You absolutely would do anything for Scarlett.

                                  By David Artavia - April 19 2019
Tyler Blackburn is ready to be free. It’s a bright morning in Los Angeles, and the anticipation is palpable as he speaks candidly on life, acting, and self-discovery. The young actor knows that today is an important milestone for him, yet he can’t help but feel vulnerable during these emotional few minutes.
It isn’t hard to fall in love with Blackburn, whose breakthrough role as Caleb Rivers in ABC Family’s Pretty Little Liars solidified him as one of Hollywood’s brightest talents — earning the actor three Teen Choice Awards (two for Best Male TV Star and one for Best Chemistry, which he shared with PLL costar Ashley Benson) and a considerable number of young fans.
Blackburn’s fandom runs deep and heavy among teen audiences. His starring role in the CW’s Roswell, New Mexico as gay war veteran and amputee Sgt. Alex Manes continues to push boundaries while highlighting issues seldom seen on-screen — like PTSD, immigration, and queer love. Finding the character was cathartic, and in many ways Alex’s inner struggle mirrors the actor’s own.
While growing up in L.A., Blackburn says he resisted coming to terms with his identity. A self-confessed “late bloomer,” he was picked on for being effeminate — times he describes as dark periods in his life, when “self-hatred and shame” overpowered him on a daily basis.
“I got bullied a lot by other boys, and I just felt like my soul was slowly being taken from me,” he reflects. “I ended up eating lunch in my biology classroom in 10th grade, and I had no one to talk to. You form a shell around yourself for protection. And you start to make decisions based off of things outside of what you want and who you are. I stopped doing so many of the things that I loved doing because it felt safer. That right there is the outcome of oppression. When you literally have to mute who you are in order to feel safe. That’s soul-crushing.”
But the young star is done caring about what people think. Now he’s building a new kind of role fueled with the intention to be “as happy as possible, as free as possible” and is choosing to own his space after years of avoiding the truth.
“I'm queer,” he proclaims. “I've identified as bisexual since a teenager.” His voice cracks as years of secrets and dodging media questions about his sexuality falls by the wayside. “I just want to feel powerful in my own skin, and my own mind, and in my own heart.”
Embracing the scope of who he was took time and effort. While he had a couple of long-term relationships with women in his early 20s, Blackburn wasn’t entirely fulfilled by them, and he says he always had an “underlying curiosity” about men. But as is the case for many bisexuals, he battled social pressure to remain binary (either gay or straight). Deep down, he knew he was neither.
“I heard so many things from within the queer community about bisexuality being a cop-out or bullshit or the easy way out or something, and that always stuck with me because I felt the pressure from all sides to have [my sexuality] figured out,” he shares. “And I think for the longest time, I suppressed more of my attraction to men. It wasn’t until my late 20s, towards the end of Pretty Little Liars, that I really allowed myself to go there and not just wonder about it or lust over it, but experience that vulnerability and experience the emotional aspect of what it is to be bisexual.”
Blackburn’s role in Roswell, New Mexico came at a perfect time in his life. “I knew this guy in and out,” he says of discovering Sgt. Alex Manes. “I understood feeling oppressed. I understood having issues with my father [wanting to feel] accepted by him. I understood wanting something but being afraid to have it. I understood self-doubt.”
Someone else who understood was the show’s creator, Carina Adly MacKenzie, who Blackburn came out to while shooting the pilot. Not only did she accept him with open arms, but she made a point to nurture Blackburn’s storyline with immense compassion and fortitude.
For Blackburn, the path toward self-discovery is visible both on-screen and off. Even more prominent is the awareness that he no longer needs to be placed in a box.
“Just because you decide ‘I am this thing’ doesn’t mean you immediately feel like you fit into that thing,” he explains. “That’s another part of the journey that I still don’t always know how to navigate, but I’m feeling more courageous and fortified to explore.”
Fans of Roswell, New Mexico have been supportive of Blackburn and costar Michael Vlamis’s on-screen relationship. Michael Guerin (Vlamis) is bisexual on the show while Alex Manes is gay, but one specific scene stands out: Alex and Michael wake up in bed together and Michael puts his hand on Alex’s leg and caresses it downward, eventually touching where his limb ends — a moving act that many amputees can relate to but rarely see on-screen. The fact that Alex is gay also speaks to the roaring debate on LGBTQ people serving in the military.
“It’s little things like that, that made me realize, ‘Wow, this is a big responsibility,’” he reflects, adding that he’s wasting no time on making other people comfortable.
“I’m so tired of caring so much. I just want to live my truth and feel OK with experiencing love and experiencing self-love,” he says. “Yes, there is an element of, I want to feel like it’s OK to hold my boyfriend’s hand as I’m walking down the street, and not worry. Is someone going to look and be like, ‘Whoa, is that guy from that show? I didn’t know that [he was queer.]’ I want to own my space now.”
In every way, Blackburn is exactly where he should be — the here and now.
“Now we’re at a place where fluidity is spoken about in such a beautiful way that it doesn’t make me feel as pressured to have it figured out,” he says. “My goal above everything is to feel as happy as possible. As free as possible. I don’t just mean happy, like, ‘I’m laughing all day, every day.’ That’s actually insane. That’s impossible. What I mean is, I want to feel free.”

Vanessa Hudgens Harper’s Bazaar Malaysia Interview
Tumblr media
BREAKING FREE
Growing up from a Disney icon to a gun-wielding heroine, American actress Vanessa Hudgens has come a long way since her ‘High School Musical’ days, Ahead of her upcoming Netflix film ‘Tick, Tick ... Boom’ and current action comedy ‘Bad Boys for Life’, the former teen star gets down to business, revealing her stance on feminism, growing up in Hollywood - and how she’s dealing with that social media controversy.
By Amy Yasmine. Photographed by Kat Irlin. Styled by Anna Katsanis
What a difference a day makes. In early March, American actress and singer Vanessa Hudgens posted a selfie of herself dressed in a risqué metallic Saint Laurent bustier, paired with barely-there hot pants, big curls, and red haute lips. With a caption that read “That good good. No it’s not Thursday”, one can only assume that she was referring to her weekly #ThirstyThursdays feel-good posts, a series of stylishly curated body-positive pin-ups that had become her personal “revenge-bod” indulgence since her high-profile break-up with actor, Austin Butler. It certainly didn’t take long for the picture to attract more than a million likes, breaking the Internet with hundred of web articles from the likes of E! Online  to The Daily Mail. “Thank you for blessing us with this”, commented Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina actress Kiernan Shipka, while Pretty Little Liars actress Ashley Benson declared her love for her fellow Spring Breakers co-star. Little did anyone realise, that the selfie was in fact a behind-the-scene outtake from this exclusive Harper’s BAZAAR Malaysia cover shoot in sunny Los Angeles, shot on location amid lush palm trees and clear blue skies. It was indeed a much simpler time then: malls were packed with countless shoppers, yoga centres were running at full capacity, and rush hour traffic in major cities would last for hours on end. But in a blink of an eye, the world changes overnight, and nothing else was ever the same.
Suddenly, social distancing and self-isolation became the new norm, and in a matter of days, we started to question our own health, safety and sanity. Oddly enough, this conscious approach juxtaposed the resulting series of TikTok dance videos and Insta Live workouts as millions of subscribers were given carte blanche to become their own Insta celebrities.
For Vanessa, this translated into an IG LIve video which saw the Disney actress voice her opinions on the worldwide pandemic, culminating in a social media frenzy which incited many to lash against The Princess Switch star. Of course, just as soon as she had realised her mistake, Vanessa released a statement on Twitter, apologising for her misstep of judgement. “I’m so sorry for the way I have offended anyone and everyone who has seen the clip from my Instagram Live yesterday” she confessed. “I realise my words were insensitive and not at all appropriate for the situation our country and the world are in right now”.
“I think it’s important to remember that no one’s perfect” Vanessa responded in our interview, barely days after her bold comment on the ‘gram. “All we can do is learn from our mistakes ... so I keep charging on”. A testament to her unrelentless spirit, one which she had undoubtedly molded since her High School Musical era.
Indeed, the half-American and half-Filipina actress was 17 when she was casted as Gabriella Montez in the now-iconic Disney film. Within a year, her music recordings for the movie’s soundtrack went on to dominate the charts internationally, with “Breaking Free” a duet with former on-screen/off-screen love interest Zac Efron, hitting #4 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and #9 in the United Kingdom. Through the years, the multi-talented actress released a number of solo albums, from V in 2006 and Identified in 2008, while also being inducted into Forbes’s “High Earners Under 30″ list in 2008.
It isn’t just chick flicks and family specials that propelled her into superstardom. There’s another part of Vanessa that’s altogether badass and empowering, which shone through the less commercial yet thought-provoking projects, like the cult coming-of-age drama Thirteen by Catherine Hardwicke, and of course, Harmony Korine’s 2012  Spring Breakers, starring James Franco and Selena Gomez. Here, her seamless ability to go from fresh-faced-girl-next-door, to a gun-wielding temptress stood out the most. Naturally, this chameleonic prowess to switch from one polarised character to another, has certainly helped in paving the way for her latest endeavour in Broadway and latest film Bad Boys for Life, let alone her rise as not just a feminist symbol, but as a role model to young girls everywhere.
Surely, in a post #MeToo world and today’s current state of panic, sisterhood, compassion and humanity are needed, now more than ever. And with celebrity culture being blown out of proportion, perhaps, it is a time to reflect, and be present. After all, to quote Vanessa’s 2006 High School Musical hit, “We’re All In This Together”.
You’ve come a long way since High School Musical. How do you think that experience and growing up with fame, has shaped you personally and professionally?
It’s made me stronger. Growing up in the spotlight is difficult. But going through things publicly gave me thick skin. The industry is tough and I’m grateful for my strength
Since then, some of the films you’ve starred in, like Spring Breakers and Thirteen, highlight some controversial issues facing women today. How do you think such films reflect back on our current state of society at large?
It’s important to see films where things are taken too far and observe how it plays out. It’s really crucial to be faced with the question “Where do I stand on that?”. That’s how you build your own character and understanding about yourself.
How much of these kick-ass slash empowering narratives appeal to you as an actress, especially now that you’ve taken the role of a cop in Bad Boys for Life?
I’ve always dreamt of being a badass action babe. I remember seeing Angelina Jolie in Tomb Rider and thinking to myself, “I want to do that”. It’s important for girls to see woman kicking ass and being empowered.
What was it like working with iconic actors like Will Smith and Martin Lawrence?
It’s so fun being on a set when there is already such an established relationship between the main cast. Will and Martin are both are such kind individuals and they’re so collaborative. Will always made sure everyone was looked after and having a good time.
Has it been hard transitioning from a Disney icon, to a badass female actress?
The beginning was the toughest time, because all people knew of me was from High School Musical. I really had to put in the work to expand my résumé and be seen in a different light. But I enjoy the process. I’m playing all different types of characters and constantly challenging myself to take on something new.
In February, the photographer Claire Rothstein released a video featuring yourself and other prolific women on female empowerment. What is your take on feminism?
To me it’s about seeing yourself as someone you respect and being treated that way. There’s so many different opinions about how a woman should be, and I think the only opinion that matters is your own. There’s still so much work to do when it comes to equality and equal pay, but the conversation is loud and I think with continuing in that direction we will make a difference!
As a proud half-American half-Filipina, how much of your multicultural background informs the person you are today?
I’m sad to say I still haven’t been to the Philippines and I feel like a piece of me is missing because I’m not as connected to my heritage as I’d like. But I am very much my mother’s child and she was born and raised in the Philippines with not a lot to her name. Hearing her struggles and her instilling her faith and spirit into me are my grounding pillars. But I was born in the States and raised as an American. It’s nice to have a piece of both.
If you were to choose between acting and singing, which one would it be?
That’s so hard for me. I grew up doing musical theatre so to me they go hand-in-hand but if I HAD to choose I’d say acting. Telling stories and stepping into someone else’s shoes are my real passion.
Going into Broadway - which seems to be the right juggle between the two - how do you mentally prepare yourself with such feats?
Being on stage is like being at home to me. You do all the preparation in a safe space and then finally have that moment where you tell the story and have the audience right there to react to it. You can feel if they are into it or not. It’s such an intimate special connection you have with the audience when you’re on stage. I get such a thrill from it.
With so much going right now, how do you take the time to just #SelfLive?
I’ve been meditating a bit more recently. I think with all the noise it’s so important to take time to drop in to yourself and release all the baggage we carry. I’m also such a fan of a good face mask, a glass of wine, and watching a comedy in bed. Also, a good meal. Taking time with it and really experiencing all your senses with each bite.
Without a doubt, it’s been quite an emotional roller coaster for you these past few years. How do you keep yourself motivated after all that has happened?
I think it’s important to remember no one’s perfect. We all make mistakes and probably will keep making mistakes. All we can do is learn from them and try not to make the same mistake twice. I’m so passionate about what I do and living my best life because we only have one. I don’t want to look back and say what if, so I keep charging on.
One of the greatest things about you is your ability to keep it real. How do you manage to do that, especially in Hollywood?
I try to make it a point to actively keep my life real. I’ve been through a lot but still have so much life to live. I always try to take a step back and see the journey and feel deep gratitude for it. I think when you lead with gratitude it’s hard to become jaded.
Speaking of keeping it real, what’s your take on being sexy and confident in this day and age?
For me, when I feel confident and empowered by my femininity I feel like I can conquer whatever I set my mind to. There’s power in that. If you believe it, you can do it.

INTRODUCING…. me.
hey, babes !! my name’s dee, and i’m very new around here. i’m twenty-three, live in the est, and use she/her pronouns. i’m a moody aquarius, chaotic neutral, and infp for those of you that are into literally anything that will tell you about your personality like me. i’m legit so painfully shy but i’m so down for plots, threads, and ships of all kinds so please bring me whatever your little hearts desire !!! i’m so stoked to be here and write with y’all it’s INSANE, and my ims are ALWAYS open for screaming about plotting, sharing headcanons, or making friends !! i only have two triggers that i feel should be mentioned and those are anything involving heavily graphic or explicit mentions of self-harm or pedophilia. otherwise, i’m good to go but please let me know if i miss something and don’t tag or give a content warning for any of your triggers !!!
INTRODUCING…. the muses.
HEATHER VINCENT, phoebe tonkin, ( 26 ) + screwtape by cane hill.
JANIE FOLEY, holland roden, ( 21 ) + disco tits by tove lo.
CARCOSA LUSK, lucy hale, ( 23 ) + ain’t no grave by johnny cash.
MICKEY ST. CLAIR, lynn gunn, ( 24 ) + soon be gone by boots.
VERONICA ST. CLAIR, carlson young, ( 21 ), + hotter than hell by dua lipa.
EVE RAYNER, holland roden, ( 27 ), + when the levee breaks by led zeppelin.
VALERIA PADILLA, eiza gonzalez, ( 27 ), + down by stone temple pilots.
MOLLY STARRETT, madelaine petsch, ( 22 ), + ultraviolence by lana del rey.
BRITNEY STARRETT, katherine mcnamara, ( 20 ), + come as you are by nirvana.
NIKKI FREY, maggie lindemann, ( 19 ), + baby i’m dead inside by kopps.
INTRODUCING…. wanted plots.
oh wOW alright so i’m gonna be basic for a second and tell y’all that i fucking love angst. i mean, fluff’s great and all, but my heart truly lies with the gritty, toxic, dysfunctional, and fucked up. i’m also a huge fan of anything having to do with crime so if you ever wanna do any crime plots come my way !!!  it’s also no secret that i’m a very big fan of age gaps ( obvs not with minors because GROSS ). but seriously, give me everything. friends or exes or enemies to lovers, two toxic people that know they should walk away from each other but can’t live without the other, criminals on the run, any kind of criminal or bad influence with pure characters that have hearts made of gold, characters that go through something horrible together and become each other’s lifeline because they’re the only ones that understand, secret and / or taboo relationships, slowburn and unrequited love, exes that reconnect under literally any kind of circumstances, etc. i’ll link some good examples of my favorite plots so you can get a feel for what i’m describing !!!
x, x, x, x, x, x, x, x, x, x, x, x, x, x, x, x are all some ( hopefully ) pretty good examples !!
i’m also always down for plots away from the romantic side of things. i LOVE giving my characters ride or dies, enemies, exes, family, or anything else you can think of. the more unique the connection the better !! legit one of the best relationships i ever played out in an rp was between carcosa and another girl. totally platonic, but it was such a rich and fucked up dynamic that was full of toxicity and power struggles and manipulation and backstabbing, but also drunken benders and risky adventures and late night confessions, and those were easily some of the funnest threads and plotting sessions i’ve ever had. so please, like i said, give me all of the connections.
INTRODUCING…. the favorites.
i’m totally gonna break this down into quick lil sections because i have a lot of favorite things lmao so here you go !!!
SHIPS
tbh i have so many favorite crackships so pls don’t even get me started on those ?? but i love both f/f and m/f ships and have absolutely zero preference when it comes to which one we do. i’m also a huge fan of poly ships and i’ll never say no to having multiple ships/plots/threads with the same person. i’m very much a multi-ship kinda gal so as long as it’s cool with my writing partner(s) i tend to assume each ship is in it’s own little verse unless otherwise discussed. though i’m totally down for and love ic drama so don’t be afraid to approach me about ships existing in the same timeline !! i’m a fan of everything from the sickly sweet and fluffy to the fucked up, toxic, and angsty so just give me all of the ships because tbh i’m a slut for ‘em.
FACES
alright so some of my favorite faces to play are holland roden, lucy hale, phoebe tonkin, eiza gonzalez, madelaine petsch, katherine mcnamara, dove cameron, halsey, emma greenwell, maggie lindemann, emmy rossum, madison davenport, lynn gunn, vanessa morgan, carlson young, deborah ann woll, and maggie siff. some of my favorite ladies to play against are zoey deutch, lindsey morgan, kat graham, vanessa morgan, dua lipa, eliza taylor, adelaide kane, candice patton, dove cameron, arden cho, chloe bennet, vanessa hudgens, danielle campbell, ashley benson, margot robbie, blake lively, ginny gardner, angelina jolie, emeraude toubia, meghan markle, and zoe kravitz. some of my favorite fellas to play against are charlie hunnam, jon bernthal, dj cotrona, charles melton, manny montana, oscar isaac, andy biersack, andrew lincoln, chris evans, bob morley, garrett hedlund, tom hardy, jason momoa, tyler posey, michael b. jordan, frank grillo, jeffrey dean morgan, dom sherwood, jensen ackles, skeet ulrich, and froy gutierrez.
EXTRAS
just for fun, here’s a mismatched list of some of my favorite things across the board !! snakes, glitter, the colors purple, teal, and black, dogs, iced coffee, horror movies, outlaw bikers, drag queens, classic rock, vinyl records, bath and body works, geodes, mexican food, pulp fiction, the moon and stars, tattoos, neon lights, iasip, succulents and cacti, richard siken, candles, myths and folklore, metallic lipstick, sons of anarchy, and concerts.
INTRODUCING…. future plans.
tbh i hope to get a lot of things out of this group. i’m hoping to find a safe space to let my creativity run wild and a home for my muses where they can constantly grow and develop through interactions with other characters, in-depth plots, and my own exploration the more i write with them. i’m also hoping this will be a good opportunity to make friends, since i’m very much a loner and some of the best people i’ve met have been through the world of roleplaying. i definitely want to push my muses and challenge myself to be a better writer here, and i hope to help out those of you that are seeking the same things in your journey !! i’m already planning on adding some more muses in the very near future ( because i have ZERO impulse control ), and as far as future plans for plots go i want EVERYTHING. romantic, enemies, exes, familial, platonic, and literally anything in between. i would definitely love some slowburn ships where our characters don’t just fall in love overnight. i’d also be so down for exploring the dynamics of age gap relationships. not just the taboo aspect of them but like the differences in generations, the potential repercussions, the ups and downs and the times where they’re not sure if they can make it work.
INTRODUCING…. why i said fuck it.
i mean who hasn’t felt like saying fuck it to the rpc ??? i’ve been rping for several years, about six of those years have been on tumblr and as much love as i can have for this community at times, most days it’s just fucking exhausting. i feel like it’s mostly become a very toxic, judgmental, and honestly shallow place. i hate the expectation groups put on members these days with activity checks and whatnot because honestly who even has the time to write every single day ????? or y’know sometimes we just don’t feel like it ?????? i know for me personally between my mental health and irl responsibilities i just don’t have the time or energy to be on every two days. and plus a lot of them are cliquey af or die in a week or are riddled with petty drama so i tend to avoid them altogether. i joined the indie community in hopes of rping on my terms and while i def feel like that was a step in the right direction, it’s still a very exclusive community at times and i’ve had difficulty fitting in. there’s still a lot of ugliness towards female ocs or muns that exclusively play females and tbh i’m over it ??? i decided to give this group a try because i love the idea of the indie format but in a group, making it easier to plot with people and put yourself out there. tl;dr i decided to say fuck it because the community’s gone downhill and i needed a change.

She could have been a princess, could have been pampered and taken care of her entire life, if only her father wanted to give her his kingdom. But she was only a disappointment to him, failing to meet all the expectations he had and be the son he wanted. Her mother did the best she could, always letting Nadia know that, in her eyes, she was perfect, but all the approval she had to offer couldn’t drown out the cutting words Nadia’s father had to offer. Her mother hadn’t been to college, didn’t work, didn’t have any money of her own, had no one in the world she could rely on but Nadia’s father, but the very first time her Dominant raised a hand to threaten her daughter, she didn’t let that stop her.
She wasn’t going to resign her daughter to a life of fear because she was afraid of being on her own, and so they went from everything to nothing, from a lavish townhouse to two beds in a women’s shelter, and from there to a small bedroom rented in a house full of women in the same predicament. They got their feet underneath themselves slowly, but everything they gained, no matter how small, was something they were fiercely proud of. And, most of all, they supported each other. Nadia was beside herself with excitement for her mother when she finished the degree she had been taking night classes to achieve; and her mother would spend the last five dollars of her paycheck to bring home drugstore makeup for Nadia. They’d figured out how to live, just the two of them, and the first time her mother told her that she wanted to try dating again, Nadia’s first feeling was dread.
She knew that, if she wanted to, she had the power to stop it. And she was tempted, when her mother told her that she’d met someone, and not just anyone, but a man with a son. As far as Nadia was concerned, she didn’t need another father that she’d only disappoint, and she certainly didn’t need a brother. But her mother had gone through some hard years for her sake, and so she put on a smile, and tried to mean it when she said that she would give John and Cameron Russo a chance. And, if the feeling of rejection she’d carried from her own father made her a cynic, convinced that her mother was the only person who would ever truly love and accept her, then it took the Russos to help her slowly dismantle those walls again after her mother entered a new claim when she was fourteen, and John legally adopted Nadia a year later, and Nadia agreed to change her last name to Russo.
In a new school in a new town, she set her sights on becoming a cheerleader; she didn’t want to be a wallflower, didn’t want to be invisible, she wanted to be one of the girls that everyone looked to, that everyone else wanted to be. And, after only one year on junior varsity, she was lucky enough to make varsity, or, at least, she thought she was at first. The varsity cheer coach was April Bianchi, and she’d returned to the high school after college to coach the squad she used to captain. All the girls loved her: she was a coach, a best friend, a confidante, but she was also so much more than that. She was the person who got Nadia drunk for the first time, at one of many squad-bonding parties she held at her house. And she was the person who encouraged them to compete, all the time, about everything. Nadia was shamed for her inexperience with boys, pitted against her squad-mates in brutal weigh-ins, but most of all they competed for April’s favor, all trying to be the girl that she liked best, trying not to be one of the girls she liked the least. And when April decided that she wanted more boys to join the squad, Nadia pleaded, cajoled, and bribed Cameron into taking up a spot.
No matter how much they cut each other down, if anyone asked her about the squad she would have said that she loved it, and she didn’t even think it was a lie. Everyone wants to be us, they all said to each other, and Nadia believed it. And she knew that the way they treated each other had nothing on the way they treated the girls who weren’t one of them.
She was so caught up in her own machinations that she hardly paid any attention to Cameron after she bribed him into joining, besides his habit of sleeping his way through the squad, and she was as surprised as anyone when the police showed up to their house after Cameron was caught on camera slashing April’s boyfriend’s tires. No charges were filed, and Cameron was off to college, so it didn’t matter to him, the fallout was left all to Nadia, who was told that she was lucky just to maintain her spot on the squad. But she was on the bottom of it, and she learned that it didn’t matter if she was one of them if they could turn on her all the same, especially when having been one of them meant they were armed with videos they’d taken of her drunk and unsuspecting at all their parties, doing dares and confessing embarrassing truths.
She’d always been her mother’s perfect daughter, and she didn’t know how to tell her or her stepfather what was going on at school. But the thought of walking through the halls every day made a pit grow in her stomach, and so she just, stopped going. And she thought that they’d be angry, but instead her mother did what she promised she’d always do for her, bend heaven and earth to make her happy. If she didn’t want to go to that school anymore, then all she had to do was say, and they transferred her midway through her junior year.
At her new school she didn’t cheer. At her new school she didn’t go to parties, or even make friends, just kept her head down and hoped that no one would make fun of her. It felt a little bit like she’d felt right after she and her mother left her father, like the world was an unfriendly place, and even if the circle of people she could rely on had widened just enough to include the Russos, it was still a very small thing to live in. And when it came time for college, she decided to follow Cameron to Verona, it just felt safe. But there was a part of her that still felt daring enough to take another shot at a dream and hope that this time it would love her back. And so, a few years after graduation, and before she could talk herself out of it, she auditioned for a TV role. This time, she didn’t beg Cameron to join her, she figured she’d done more than enough by following him to college, forcing him to look after her again by continuing to live with him long after college, but he chose to do so anyway, no matter how put-off he acted. And though there’s a part of her that still doubts her second family, worries that Cameron will end up resenting her, and that she’ll disappoint everyone just like she did her father.
