Ballard: Well, I mean, I took that on as a branding thing, just to be honest. I mean, I’m Appalachian, multiple generations back. And I’ve been a witch my whole life. My mother’s family all identified themselves and were identified with that word back to like, five generations, that I know of.
So, I’ve always been that and then, when it came time for me to, to kind of have, a hat rack to hang all my hats on, that felt like a good one. So, I called myself the village witch.
And I know some people who function as village witches in Britain. One of them contacted me, and she was like, “Well, what exactly is it that you do that you think you’re a village witch?”
And I said, “Well, I go out, and I bless the cornfields. And I used to bless the tobacco crop, and I’ll come out and clear your house if it’s got some uncomfortable in it. And I’ll bless your babies, and I’ll, you know, bury your grandma, and, you know, all that stuff.”
And my friend said, “Oh, well, no. That’s exactly what a village witch does.”
And I said, “Well, yeah.”

My friend Stella texts me randomly - and I mean randomly. Look at the time stamp. 11:55pm? She lives in the mountains of Asheville, NC. So I don’t see her. I haven’t seen her since 2022.
There’s always something eerie about getting a Stella text. They never go through as regular iMessage because she has no service out there, she always sounds vague and never uses a greeting. I sometimes wonder if it’s actually her texting me or a bog witch.
When we were kids we’d sneak out at night and sit in the road and then jump up and run across the road scaring oncoming drivers. We were literally insane.

Why You Shouldn’t Whistle In The Woods: Appalachian Creatures and Folklore
In the Appalachian mountains, small communities whisper tales of creatures that would turn a Yankee’s skin blue and run rivers up his spine. For anyone interested, here’s a list of the must-know Appalachian spooks that haunt the mountain range.
The Bell Witch
One of the most popular examples of Appalachian folklore, this story originates in Robertson County, Tennessee. The Bell Witch (thought to be a woman named Kate Batts) was cheated in a land purchase by John Bell, the patriarch of the Bell family.
Around 1817 and 1821 the hauntings began, with the Bell Witch appearing disguised as an animal (such as a bird or a black dog). She focused on John Bell’s daughter, harming the girl with painful scratches and destroying her room during the night. Bell became so concerned for the safety of his daughter that he confided in a friend, James Johnston. Word from there began to spread, until eventually it reached the ears of General Andrew Jackson.
According to the story, Jackson and his party of men set up tents outside of the Bell residence. One man claiming to have knowledge of witch dealings, stated that his silver bullets were keeping the witch subdued. As punishment for his ego and mockery, the Bell Witch set her sights on Jackson’s party and ran them from the property with violence and malice.
Even after John Bell’s (mysterious) death in 1820, the witch continued to haunt the family.
The Brown Mountain Lights
Specific to the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, these lights are a lesser known Appalachian mystery. In the Brown Mountain area near Morganton NC, locals and tourists alike have made several reports of glowing, orb-like lights hovering approximately 15 feet off the ground. First recorded sightings of these lights occurred in 1771, when engineer John William Gerard de Brahm wrote about seeing the phenomenon in his journal.
Legend tells of a gruesome battle between Catawba and Cherokee warriors on Brown Mountain, which left several dead on the battlefield. In the evenings, Catawba women would search for their sons, brothers, husbands and fathers by using torch lights to guide them. Many claim that the Brown Mountain Lights seen today are the spirits of these women, endlessly searching for their loved ones.
The Wiseman’s View Overlook, Brown Mountain Overlook, and Lost Cove Cliffs Overlook are the most popular places to see them. All are found off NC-105 S or NC-181 near Asheville and Boone. While reported sightings of the colorful lights are known for their inconsistency, the lights are typically seen at night, especially after a rainfall.
The Flatwoods Monster
Originating in Braxton County, West Virginia, The Flatwoods Monster is another population Appalachian myth. In 1952, Edward and Freddie May, Neil Nunley, and Tommy Hyer were playing at Flatwoods Elementary when a light went shooting across the sky. Arriving at the sight of the light’s crash, they saw a pulsing red light and 10-foot-tall creature with a glowing green face and gnarled hands levitating from the ground.
Little is known about what happened after this reported sighting, however an official U.S. Air Force inquiry was prompted and the incident made national news.
The Moon-Eyed People
According to both Cherokee legend and Appalachian folk tales, there is a group of humanoids lurking in the Appalachian mountains (usually associated with Murphy, NC). Described to be short with very pale skin and bearded faces, the Moon-Eyed People are known for their characteristic wide blue eyes. These creatures are said to be so visually sensitive to sunlight that they remain in hiding and nocturnal, prompting their title of “moon-eyed”.
Legend claims that local tribes waited for the full moon to appear to force the Moon-Eyed People from their underground caves. The bright light weakened them, forcing them to leave the area and hide in other parts of the Appalachian area.
Separate from other Appalachian cryptids, Moon-Eyed People were considered to be a separate race of human rather than any supernatural entities. While it may seem obvious to onlookers that said cryptids are simply European settlers, what’s shocking is that this story dates back hundreds of years before Christopher Columbus came to the continent.
The Mothman
Famous now around the world, the Mothman is a creature who originated in Point Pleasant, West Virginia. The story begins when two couples reported seeing a large humanoid creature flying with a 10-foot wingspan and intense glowing red eyes. Stories caught and spread like wildfire, until December 1967 when the Mothman was credited for the collapse of Silver Bridge (killing 46 people).

Screw it! New pinned post cuz the old one is way outta date!
Hi, I’m Jay. I’m 28 (as of June 13th this year), genderfluid (she/they), bisexual, neurodivergent six ways from Sunday, a goth punkass, and a writer. Don’t be an asshole, and we’ll probably get along just fine. My writing blog is @foxytonics-quill , and I also have a ton of rp blogs that I tend to jump back and forth between every few months or so, depending on my muse. I’ll start the list with my brand new ones.
@mechanakin - very canon-divergent Anakin Skywalker, still a WIP
@solo-returned - very canon-divergent Kylo Ren/Ben Solo, still a WIP
@to-hold-the-line - Cal Kestis as written in and after Jedi: Survivor, still a WIP
@monstershearts - a multimuse blog filled with monsters, both from classic horror/sci-fi and my own imagination, kinda canon divergent, still technically a WIP
@covenunited - a multimuse blog full of witch OCs that occupy a fictional version of Asheville, North Carolina, and use a magic system of my own creation. (Currently on hiatus)
@riddlcmcthis - a very punk reimagining of the Riddler, aka Eddie Nygma. (Currently on hiatus)
@walkthroughtrees - a blog revolving around a family of Druid OCs. (Currently on hiatus)
@haresgrove - somewhat canon-divergent Billy Hargrove. (Currently on hiatus)
@antlersandrage - canon-divergent Gaston Legume from the live action Beauty and the Beast. (Currently on hiatus)
@crimsonxrites - possibly canon-divergent multimuse blog for Mollymauk Tealeaf, Lucien Tavelle, and Kingsley Tealeaf from Critical Role, still a WIP. (I need to finish Nine Eyes of Lucien before I set it up, and that probably won’t happen for a while yet. 😬)
@jays-cave-of-rp-memes is my rp meme resource blog that I’m kinda spotty on.
I have more blogs on my roll that I’m probably not gonna do anything else with but I don’t know how to delete them on mobile and am currently too lazy to get on my laptop and figure it out lol

Bat Life {drabble}
Ryan’s life was an intricate dance of concealment, one he navigated each day with exhausting precision. He spent his hours keeping his head down, resisting the urge to reveal even the smallest glimpse of his true self. To the human world, he was just another guy in a hoodie, a tech-savvy night owl with no visible quirks, no oddities. The mundane routine became a mask he wore, hiding the sharp instincts, the keenness of his hearing, the thrill that stirred in his veins each time he felt his senses spike.
Though Ryan kept to himself, it was impossible not to notice how Asheville had shifted. Once, it had been a sleepy city, tucked in its own comfortable shadow, filled with folks who liked their routines and found solace in the slow pace of small-town life. But now? Asheville buzzed with an undercurrent of energy, something heavier, almost foreign. Supernaturals had slipped into the seams, spilling into every corner. The quiet neighborhood streets and hidden spots he once wandered freely were now alive with supernatural beings—vampires, werewolves, witches—moving beneath the humans’ radar, their presence threading through the city’s nightlife. Ryan could feel them, almost see them if he tilted his perception just right, their shadows brushing the edges of his vision. They were like him, forced to exist under wraps, but they didn’t have his caution. Some didn’t care for discretion, their mere existence on full display in ways that left him tense and wary.
It was something that irked him, that gnawing feeling of watching people—if you could call them that—parade the very thing he’d spent years hiding. The open confidence in their walk, the subtle hints they left behind in the form of half-revealed powers or lingering scents in alleyways, felt like a reckless invitation. Part of him wished he could join them, just breathe in the freedom they seemed to possess, even if it was fleeting. But Ryan knew the dangers too well. Freedom was a luxury he couldn’t afford, not with the volatile abilities he carried, the risks of losing control, especially when his werebat instincts were triggered by others of his kind. Just one slip and he might accidentally drain someone, feel that faint, dangerous rush from siphoning energy, an instinct as much a part of him as his heartbeat.
Sometimes, on the rare days he felt his patience slipping, Ryan would catch himself observing humans who passed by, wondering what they would think if they knew Asheville’s hidden inhabitants. Would they be terrified? Intrigued? Would they look at him differently, even as he slouched into his hoodie and tried to shrink into his own skin? It wasn’t just strangers he considered, either; his thoughts often lingered on the handful of people he still kept in his life, friends and acquaintances who knew him as a techie and a recluse, nothing more. What would Alex think? His old friend’s curiosity about Asheville’s mysteries was both endearing and unsettling.
Even when the pull of his supernatural side grew strong, it never felt entirely natural for him to be part of Asheville’s dark underbelly. He couldn’t just embrace it the way others did. He’d been raised human, conditioned to think of himself as human even after the first horrific transformation shattered that illusion. This dual existence gnawed at him constantly—one part technology-savvy hermit, the other a creature of shadows with a predatory edge he could barely control. Asheville’s transformation mirrored his own internal struggle, its streets, and hidden passages filled with beings who had carved out space for themselves, thriving in ways he couldn’t—or wouldn’t—allow himself to.
Back in his apartment, on those quiet, restless nights, he’d stare at the stacks of computer parts and coding projects surrounding him, wondering if he could just hide in this life forever. Perhaps he could keep himself tied to this grounding, predictable world of logic and algorithms, keeping his supernatural side dormant like a dusty old artifact he rarely touched. And yet, each time he returned to the Secret Haven, he felt it—a reminder of his place in Asheville’s shifting landscape, a reluctant realization that the city’s secrets were becoming his own.

And I came out on the other side
It's been a long journey since I wrote last in this blog any glimpses of my story. I was like a lingering jazz note, changing tone over the years, turning in to silence, just to strike again, in a different frequency.
I wrote here about Asheville, about my divorce, a lifetime ago, yet so near. I was 21 when I got divorced - a strange story left long in the past, have been composted. That year I moved back to NYC - a place I kept returning to, like a tide, always pulled to the shore. NYC was my shore when I was a wandering wave. I crashed on its rocks, once again. After all, there was a dream I've always had - of that city being my home. I had a dream of living in a room with light blue walls, with a friend, a dream of white cat. I don't know why, but I've had that image since before I moved to the states. That city and I, we had fun. No regrets. I trusted its streets. I've let it shape me in to people I didn't even know were inside me. From an unhinged 18 year old girl with no walls, dumpster diving, cleaning apartments, looking for strangeness, living for adventure, not fully realizing she was an artist, too - so raw, like a sunflower sprout, no second skin, at all. From that girl in my first post here, there, back on the shores of New York I was laying my foundation for becoming a woman, expanded, in lush, with a crown, that I still wear. It wasn't quick, my soul felt empty when I returned from Asheville. Of course, it never was, the soul is always full, but my hearing, I could barely hear (what she was whispering). But everything did fall in to place for me quickly, a new apartment, friends around, a job - then I was an herbalist in Manhattan, no more service jobs. First initiation. While I felt white and hollow, I was turning in to a witch. One would say, my magic was what saved me from a deep confusing hole left after that divorce, the life change. I mean, I couldn't understand.
But something heard me. Life in the city wasn't easy, not on my body, as I understood later. But in my first year of being back in the city I had a threshold tattooed on my shoulder. Suppose, subconsciously, I wanted to imprint on my body, that I have passed on to the other side, and there unseen angels, yes, they heard me, they outstretched their multiple arms towards me, and slowly guided me forward, led me to uncover, what was hidden here, on the other side. I was led in to a forest full of treasures. One of them, was my art. In that same first year I got a small camcorder from my dad and started learning how to edit video for the first time.
Three years later, I had a handful of my own self-created videos up on YouTube, I was living in a two bedroom with a close friend, my bedroom - and my separate art studio - were painted pastel shadows of blue that I mixed myself, my white little cat was roaming around the apartment, her name is Taiga; I was about to get drivers license and my first Jeep. I had walked 500 miles on the Appalachian trail, I had many friends, most unexpected job, I traveled and laughed and got heartbroken over and over again. All of that, until a golden thread from the sky pulled on me. Everything paused. And I was faced with vague, but sharp reality, the winds were changing, in fact, they have changed. Now - I'm on the other side that other portal. The flight through the opening just now landed, it's settling.
So I am reflecting on the words that I have been. And you get to witness. Thank you dear reader.

raye thornwood was born in the small town of asheville, north carolina, to a human mother and a faerie father. her life was relatively normal until one fateful night when a group of rogue vampires attacked her mother, resulting in her death. raye, just a child at the time, managed to escape the massacre due to her latent faerie abilities, which granted her a weakened form of photokinesis, managing to blast the vampires into extinction.
haunted by the loss of her mother, raye grew up with a deep-seated hatred for vampires, swearing vengeance upon those who took her loved ones away from her. as she reached adolescence, her faerie powers manifested fully, giving her the ability to manipulate light, create illusions, and read minds. as they formed raye discovered what she was, half a fae, her father a mysterious one night stand that her mother had told her of only once. these powers, combined with her determination, made her a formidable opponent in her quest to hunt down vampires.
raye became a skilled hunter, tracking and eliminating vampires who posed a threat to humans. using her faerie charm, she infiltrated vampire heavy towns and lured them into traps with the allure of her blood, dispatching them with ruthless efficiency. despite her dark mission, raye remained conflicted about her abilities and the path she had chosen, torn between her humanity and faerie heritage.
throughout the years, raye has encountered various supernatural beings, including werewolves, and witches, some of whom became her allies while others proved to be adversaries. upon hearing of mystic falls and then beacon hills, she decided the towns would be the next ones she would visit. upon finding mystic falls in ashes she was contacted by jeremy gilbert, turning her focus back on beacon hills.
𝐕𝐈…𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐍𝐄𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐒 !
jeremy gilbert: a hunter who she previously crossed paths with. his young and determination struck a cord with her, and the two have messaged each other over the years, knowing that they can rely on the other if either of them needed help with hunting.

“Wanted to pick a place closer to the mountains. I love Philly, but I can appreciate Asheville’s views, too.” It wasn’t much longer before she parked in a suburban neighborhood next to a large, light blue two-story house. The lawn was large and well-maintained, the front porch had ample space, and the wood on the outer frame all looked brand new. A few people did double-takes at Colette’s bright orange convertible, and the eccentric witch wondered if her potential neighbors thought that her car would have increased the property value of the entire street if she moved in.
She turned off the car and hopped out. “Well, what are your thoughts so far?”
Robin is holding a book as he walks towards Colette. "Question, Colette."
Colette let the top down on her convertible as Robin approached it. It was her turn to pick up Robin from school, and the car was likely to turn more than a few heads. “Answer, Robin.”
