Modern and Contemporary Architecture Raises Property Values in 2017
ASHEVILLE, N.C./ January 27, 2018 (STLRealEstate.News) One of the hottest spots in Blue Ridge Mountains to buy a home is the culturally diverse town of Asheville North Carolina according to Real Estate Scorecard. A place where rustic mountain cabins are trumped by modern contemporary homes with walls of glass windows showcasing the grandeur of the region. In a normal real estate market, homes typically appreciate. The percentage of increase can be based on a multitude of factors. Whether it is location, architectural style, the age of the home, amenities, size of the house and number of bathrooms are all reasons why home shoppers select one home over the other.
That trend changes annually and the results of those trends are tracked by the reputable Board of Realtors®. In a recent analysis of annual appreciation growth in millions of home sales nationwide, statistics highlight eight factors where home values have consistently risen.
Eight Factors Help With Appreciation
Modern/Contemporary home styles led appreciation values in architectural designs with an increase in value of 7.7%. Bungalows noted a 6.5% increase, traditional rose 5.6%, ranch homes 4.5%, Craftsman 3.7% and Victorian 2.2%.
Over the last 5 years, the size of property matters. Research found that homes under 1200 square feet was the preference for first time buyers and retiring Baby Boomer with a notable appreciation of 7.5% per year, while homes 2400 square feet and above rose only 3.8% per year in comparison.
Open Floor Plans are desirable for living spaces with an average annual appreciation of 7.4%. Not so “hot” items such as granite countertops appreciated only 2.5% and stainless-steel appliances just 3% annually.
“Less is More” when it comes to Bedrooms. Since 2012, homes with one bedroom rose an impressive 7.2% in value, 2 bedrooms experienced a 6.6% gain, 3 bedrooms a 6.3% increase and the lowest appreciation value of 4.9% for 4-bedroom homes.
“Homes with a View” ranked higher on the list than those without. Park views increased property values by 7.9%, mountain views came in at 5.1% and lake views noted a 4.9% incline in value.
Location matters…Urban homes located near mass transportation rose 8.4% in value annually. Access to quality schools increased home values by 7.2% and nearby shopping added 6.5%.
Amenities also matter in home resales. Patios increased property values by 6.8%, followed by homes with hardwood floors which rose 5.7% and fireplaces added 5.3%.
In Asheville neighborhoods, mountain modern architecture has become a highly desired home style and is quickly changing the image of a traditional “rustic mountain cabin” according to Kelly Erin-Spinney and Troy Winterrowd of Modern Asheville Real Estate.
One of the main reasons the “green architectural philosophy” is so popular today is the prevention of environmental degradation which is basically the depletion of natural resources like air, water and soil. Preservation of natural surroundings is quickly becoming a top priority for housing developments and shoppers are taking note especially when designing new homes in Asheville North Carolina.
It makes sense because Asheville has some of the most beautiful landscaping in the country as it is strategically located between the impressive Blue Ridge Parkway and the Great Smoky Mountains. Referred to as the “Land of the Sky” by locals, the majestic mountainous terrain and progressive artistic expression found in Asheville inspires “going green” to insure the region is preserved when building properties here.
Modern homes reflect the desire to invite a relationship with nature and “green designs” are the trend when it comes to building “environmentally friendly” living spaces. The new generation of architects create designs which will incorporate the psychological benefits of living one with the great outdoors which helps nurture the soul, elevate mood and boost overall well-being.
Contemporary structures have massive windows that allow natural sunlight to flow throughout the living space while inviting the outdoors inside to energize the soul with spectacular mountain views. Many of the Asheville new homes are developed to embrace the connection to natural surroundings with bright and open designs incorporating walls of glass to enjoy the scenery found in Asheville neighborhoods scattered throughout the Great Smoky Mountain region. New technology allows comfortable homes with high energy rewards, efficient use of space and a lot less clutter.
Contemporary homes also feature outdoor fire pits of all shapes and sizes that can be made of sculptural steel elements that heat up and radiate warmth while enhancing the overall structural design of the exterior of the home when not in use. Modern housing also is the use of creative lighting throughout the open living spaces.
Building materials are also evolving when building contemporary homes. Mixed textures and recycled materials are now the norm when selecting sustainable mountain housing. Products like recycled glass or quartz are often used to add distinctive flair to interior finishes creating a unique and innovative sparkle to the finished product. Simplicity with extravagance reflects the personality of the owner who can admire the home as a piece of functional art. Take the time to explore the mountain modern architecture and experience first hand the lifestyle offered in these recreated “rustic mountain cabins”. It is also wise to seek the expert guidance from those who live in and know the best Asheville neighborhoods to live.
Real Estate Scorecard encourages folks who are planning a trip to Asheville, to meet with Kelly & Troy at Modern Asheville to explore some of the most beautiful modern homes in the region. Call Modern Asheville directly at 828.552.4811.

Asheville, NC in April
(April 17, 2017)
Asheville, NC is one of the most unique and special places I’ve ever been to, and it’s a great place for me to escape to. I’ve been there probably 6 or 7 times now since the first time I went for my 15th birthday and saw the Biltmore Estate with my parents.
Since I won’t be able to go to Asheville as easily for a few months, I had to have one last road trip before my upcoming flights. I got to see familiar faces and places, and got even more than I asked for.
On my first night in Asheville, I met up with my friend, Margarita at a Vegan restaurant off of Lexington Avenue called Rosetta’s. The first time I’d been there was when I went with RN and he got a Tempeh Reuben sandwich while I munched on a vegan Pad Thai with apricot dressing that cleverly replaced the fish sauce. Margarita has never had vegan food before, so I thought this would be a good experience for her. She opted for a Vegan burger with vegonnaise, vegan cornbread, and fries, which I thought was a good starting point for someone who still craves meat. She did well, but wouldn’t want to try the vegan cheese because cheese can never be replicated in a way as delicious. I got myself a “Buddha Bowl” which contained kimchi, sprouts, avocado, tempeh, and a ball of brown rice topped with a peanut butter sauce.
It was beautiful weather outside and the sun was setting at around 7:30 PM. It was funny seeing Margarita wearing a similar military jacket to the one that she wore when I first met her. Her hair was even close to the same length, just a little bit shorter. It was as if we’d come full circle. From when she picked me up at my hostel to when she dropped me off again later that night before heading home, the whole experience was like a deja vu, except I was a lot happier than I was before.
The last time I saw her in Asheville, I was there because I was depressed. My heart was just ripped out of my chest and I went there to seek some spiritual healing. What I found later was that the best way to heal is to have great friends around you, and to just be hugged. I showed Margarita all the places where I had good memories and met great people like at Dobrá Tea where I met with a psychic or Odd’s Café where  I met several inspiring people who were kind enough to stay and chat a while. It just seems like whenever I’m there something magical happens, but it could be because I look for those magical occurrences. Even if I do, I’d consider myself lucky.
While we were in the car, she said that while I’m gone, she wants to have a cool experience to tell me about. She asked me how I could just be walking anywhere, and someone would come up and talk to me and usually I’d find out that person had a really cool story to tell. She’s right, that does happen a lot, but it wasn’t always that way.
When I look back at how I was 5 or 6 years ago, I was extremely closed off. I let nobody into my bubble because I was afraid and I didn’t like who I was. I ate lunch in the library and the art room because I preferred not meeting people. It was intimidating to see cliques and want to break those barriers, and it still is. I hardly ever will join or form any sort of group, and I always strike conversation with someone when they are alone or with one other person.
Once you erase judgement from a first impression that would prevent you from talking to someone, you find that everyone has the potential to be interesting. What keeps people from talking to each other is either the fear that they are “better” than you or the misconception that you are too good for them. We have to realize that everyone is equal and there is no “better” because everyone is good at something.
Once I got rid of my fear of talking to strangers, I think people are able to sense that, so more people have started talking to me instead. Ultimately, the message that you send out to others will come back to you.
I met several people on my trip this weekend including a Ukrainian mother and daughter, a girl from New Jersey who was looking for a place to live, one of the people who worked at the hostel, Jim who came all the way from Connecticut to help his friend move from Asheville to Florida, Paul who came from Florida to look for a roommate in Asheville, a group of foreign exchange students from Germany, a group of vegan anarchists in the park, a yoga teacher on a Tinder date at Dobrá Tea named Krystle, a concert-goer from across the room named Justin, and a guy who needed to sell an extra ticket named Lowell.
I brought and shared my own food, and in return found free food in the park for an anarchist party function that I was later kicked out of (oops). Then I bought a wig on sale for $20 after taking an Uber to downtown from West Asheville because I needed a new disguise and I knew I would still blend in perfectly despite wearing something so bright (it was a platinum-blonde bob with peekaboo pink hi-lights in the fringe). I wasn’t wearing any makeup, so I waltzed into Urban Outfitters to put on some bright eyeshadow and lipstick from the samples and I found some glasses there for $5. I obviously got some looks in the store, but who’s to care when I won’t be there tomorrow? Plus they were samples, so it’s encouraged for people to try it!
I had about an hour before seeing Explosions in the Sky at the Orange Peel, so I went to Dobrà Tea where I had some delicious Lychee Tea while sitting on tiny pillows on the floor behind beaded curtains. I heard a girl talking about astrology, so I jumped in and asked her what my sign was. She guessed I was a fire sign like she was probably since I took that initiative and was pretty flashy-looking, but I surprised her when I said I was a Scorpio. I could see clearly that she was probably a yoga teacher based off of the way she looked and how she was sitting with perfect posture, and I was right! Her name was Krystle.
A guy named Justin was sitting across from us and overheard me talking about the concert with Krystle. It just so happened that he was going to the same one! Simply putting myself out in the open with these people allowed me a ride to the show from Krystle, a person to enjoy the music with named Justin, an introduction to Justin’s new friend Lowell, and a ride to our next destination at The One Stop from Lowell plus a ride back to my hostel later that night from Justin. I took three rides total from strangers that I had just met that night, and one ride that I paid for by Uber to get to downtown.
After such an eventful and social night getting to see my favorite band ever plus a new favorite called Thor and Friends, I shared the story of my entire night with the mummy sleeping bag boy, Paul. I finally slept at 3 AM, and then by sunrise I was on the way home to make it in time for Easter Brunch with my family.
I thought of all the fun I had the night before and the memories were aided by my new Thor and Friends CD blasting on my stereo. I guess the combination of loud music and sleep deprivation plus a wide open road caused me to be halted by a state trooper. Fuck. I got another speeding ticket. After all the luck and great experience I had in Asheville, though, a speeding ticket was not so bad. I didn’t know what I’d be doing after Alaska before, but I guess the answer came knocking on my window in the form of a state trooper telling me I had to be present in court on September 20th. I guess I’ve got to be anchored somehow, otherwise who knows where I’d drift off to.

The Mighty American Road Trip: Spot gators and feast on BBQ in the red-hot South
Erin Alexander
Sports fans know the American South first and foremost as SEC country, home to proud football colleges like the University of Tennessee, the University of Alabama, and Louisiana State University. But the Southern states have always had a hell of a lot more to offer than football—classic Southern dishes like biscuits, shrimp and grits, and fried chicken, for starters. (Yeah: If you've been saving up those "cheat meal" days, you'll love this trip.)
[RELATED1]
And don't get too worked up about all those heavenly calories you'll be chowing down throughout your journey, because with a little help from Lonely Planet editor Trisha Ping, we mapped out plenty of awesome stuff you can do to help you burn off the energy. Fitness junkies will enjoy kayaking along Shem Creek in Charleston or trekking through sunken, old trails used by early American settlers, while thrill-seekers can jump at the chance to take a flight lesson over the coast of Savannah, GA, or go spelunking just oustide of Nashville, TN.
Here's the Men's Fitness guide to road-tripping through the American South.
The Mighty American Road Trip: Spot gators and feast on BBQ in the red-hot South

1. Take a private flight over the Georgia coast (Savannah, GA)
Get exhilarating, one-of-a-kind views of Savannah, GA, from the sky during a flight lesson with Amphibian Air, which offers daytime and sunset flights with an FAA-certified flight instructor in an open-cockpit aircraft that feels a bit like riding a "motorcycle in the sky."
Film fanatics and history buffs alike ought to make note of our next pit stop in downtown Savannah—Chippewa Square. Built in 1815, Chippewa Square is home to the bus stop with the iconic bench where Tom Hanks sits in Forrest Gump.
After a day of flying and location scouting, you're bound to have worked up a hearty appetite. Pay a visit to Mrs. Wilkes' Dining Room, for some "traditional family style Southern cooking," recommends Jamie Jensen, certified road trip expert and author of Road Trip USA.

2. Kayak Shem Creek before chowing down on some local biscuits (Charleston, SC)
Perfectly manicured gardens, brightly colored (and beautiful) historic buildings, genteel locals, delicious Southern cooking: That's Charleston.
Since our Southern road trip admittedly offers ample opportunities to sample the region's delicious (albeit calorie-rich) cuisine, we'll begin our stop in Charleston with something that'll burn a few calories. Go kayaking, canoeing, or even paddleboarding, around Shem Creek; you'll get to explore the area's local salt marshes, and might even catch a glimpse of a dolphin. And if you happen to stop through town in April, sign up for the Cooper River Bridge Run, an annual 10-km race.
After taking a stroll through downtown Charleston, make up that calorie deficit with a stop to Callie's Charleston Biscuits—they're flaky, tasty, and dangerously addictive. For dinner, swing by the Macintosh, where Executive Chef Jeremiah Bacon serves up a modern fare using fresh, local ingredients.

3. Take a turn (or five) down Sliding Rock in Pisgah National Forest (Asheville, NC)
The water is damn near freezing (which can be a godsend during the humid summer months), but you won't regret accelerating down the polished, stony incline of Sliding Rock at Pisgah National Forest. An easy 40-minute drive from downtown Asheville, NC, Pisgah is an outdoorsman's paradise, with an endless supply of scenic trails, cascading waterfalls, fishing, and camping.
On your way out, stop by Dolly's Dairy Bar and Gift Shop, a local favorite located just a few minutes outside the forest's main entrance. We can tell you from experience: It's some of the best ice cream you'll ever indulge in—and totally worthy of a cheat meal.
Back in Asheville, stop by Tupelo Honey Cafe, another one of our editor-approved spots for tasty Southern fare made from scratch. And if you're looking to plan a more leisurely day (how Southern of you), make a trip to the Biltmore Estate, where you can roam the grounds of America's largest home and even visit the estate's winery, which offers daily tours and tastings.

4. Go spelunking in Cumberland Caverns (Nashville, TN)
If you've never been spelunking (and you're not at all claustrophobic), you've got to make a day trip to Cumberland Caverns, a little over an hour outside of downtown Nashville. More than 300 feet below ground, Cumberland Caverns allows you to check out over 32 miles of incredible rock formations, untouched subterannean waterfalls, and picturesque caves.
Back in Nashville, you definitely won't want to miss out on the thriving music and bar scene. Ping recommends making a visit to Bobby's Idle Hour, a "no-frills, locals-only dive" that has live music daily without the downtown crowds. For a great locally crafted beer, Ping also suggests making a visit to Bearded Iris Brewing, which offers up brews that range from sours to lagers and Belgian ales, and features a "small taproom with an elegant speakeasy vibe."
On your way out, stop for a classic Southern breakfast at The Loveless Cafe, which has been serving up grub to hungry road-trippers for more than 50 years.

5. Visit the birthplace of America's 'King' (Tupelo, MS)
A trip through the South would be remiss without a visit to the house where the American legend and "King" of rock 'n' roll was born—the Elvis Presley Birthplace and Museum, located just a few minutes outside downtown Tupelo, MS. Get a firsthand look at the spot where it all began; tours of the tiny two-room structure, which Elvis' father built in 1934 for just $180, also feature authentic memorabilia and period furniture.
Just a 10-minute drive down the road lies the Tupelo National Battlefield, where Civil War buffs can learn about the 1864 Battle of Tupelo. On the way out of town, Ping recommends stopping by The Neon Pig (a nationally recognized, old-school butcher shop) for some road-friendly burgers or sandwiches and (non-road-friendly, but still excellent) local craft beer.

6. Spot a gator at Cypress Swamps (Jackson, MS)
This won't be your first swamp visit on this trip. On your drive into Jackson, MS, take a quick stop at the Cypress Swamp, where you can walk an easy boardwalk trail and get up close and personal with some real-life alligators.
Also on the way toward Jackson is Jeff Busby Park and the Bynum Mounds and Village Site (a prehistoric Native American burial site). At Busby Park, take a hike up the "Little Mountain," where at the top you'll be treated with 20-mile views of gorgeous ridges and valleys.
Once you finally make it to Jackson, get a feel for both the "Old" South and the new by taking in some of the city's civil rights history, as well as its modern new neighborhoods. Visit the home of civil rights leader Medgar Evers—it's since been renovated into a museum—before stopping for lunch in the up-and-coming Fondren District. Ping recommends grabbing a vegetarian (or vegan) meal at the High Noon Cafe, located inside the all-organic Rainbow Co-op grocery store, which she says is the perfect place to pick up some "healthy road snacks," if you are so inclined.

7. Follow in the footsteps of Native Americans and early settlers by walking the "sunken trace" (Natchez, MS)
If you're looking to get a real feel for what it's like to travel through the Old South (you know, back when buffalo roamed and autombiles weren't a thing yet), then you'll want to take a hike through the "sunken" section of the Natchez Trace, which can be found at milepost 41.5 near Port Gibson. You may not be subjected to rock-hard beds, crappy food, or, y'know, cholera, but you'll most certainly have to face mosquitos and the sometimes-stifling humidity.
When you make it to Natchez, you're likely to be tuckered out thanks to the hike and the heat, so Ping recommends stopping for some chow at King's Tavern, which was built in 1789 and is the oldest standing building in Mississippi. (It's also reportedly haunted.) Once you've got some food in your stomach, hear some live music at the legendary Under-the-Hill Saloon.

8. Unwind and indulge in the 'Big Easy' (New Orleans, LA)
If you've been eating healthy and staying fit while on the road, well, you're exactly the kind of fit traveler we hoped you would be. But now, we've got to tell you, is a time to put that regimen on hold (but only for a day or two) because you're in the "Big Easy"—a.k.a. New Orleans.
New Orleans is a fantastic place to explore, so we'll just hit you with the highlights here. First off, if you're looking for an insanely packed, wild party, plan your trip around Mardi Gras (obviously). If that's not your scene, or you'd prefer a party that's a little less crowded, avoid New Orleans around Fat Tuesday at all costs.
When in Louisiana, you've also got to make a trip out to the swamp, with which the region has become practically synonymous. Take a boat tour of Honey Island Swamp, where you'll delve into marsh-covered swampland and catch a glimpse of the local wildlife.
Finally, you've got to sample at least one perfectly sweet, magically fluffy beignet from Cafe Du Monde. They are in no way healthy, but we'll bet you can find a way to burn off those calories. Next, grab a bowl of steaming hot gumbo in the French Quarter. There are many options but Galatoire's (a century-old NOLA staple) and the Royal House Oyster Bar are tried-and-true classics.

9. Chow down on some real Southern BBQ (Houston, TX)
You've made it to the end of your hog-wild journey through the sprawling South—and what better way to celebrate a culinary high note than with some classic Texas barbecue in Houston, TX?
Before you hit up that BBQ pit, make sure you get in just a little bit of fitness: We recommend hiking or biking one of the many trails on the Buffalo Bayou, a lush 23-acre waterfront park smack-dab in the middle of downtown Houston. After working up a bit of a sweat, head on down to Burns Original BBQ, a family owned joint specializing in smoked ribs, brisket, and housemade sausage. There are plenty of great barbecue spots in town, but this one happens to be our favorite.

21 Best Things To Do in Asheville, NC
Surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains and located along the French Broad River, Asheville just might be the most beautiful city in the United States.
Take in the views of the city from the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway, and you’ll quickly see why it’s referred to as the Land of the Sky.
There are numerous things to do in Asheville and for such a small city, it really packs a punch when it comes to activities on offer.
Hiking in the mountains, feasting on southern cuisine, relaxing in hot springs, and sampling craft beer are just a few of the things you won’t want to miss.
I’ve spent a lot of time in Ashville over the last decade, and in fact, my wife and I got married and had our honeymoon in here! It’s easily one of my favourite cities in the USA and a place I always look forward to visiting.
In this Asheville travel blog, I’m excited to share some of the best activities, attractions, and places to visit in the city!
1. Visit the Biltmore Estate
A visit to the Biltmore Estate definitely deserves the top spot on this list of things to do in Asheville.
This historic mansion was built between 1889 and 1895 by George Vanderbilt. It’s a great example of the Gilded Age and an absolutely stunning place to explore.
The Biltmore Estate is actually the largest privately-owned home in the US.
It features an astounding 250 rooms and is surrounded by picturesque gardens, ponds, and a lovely conservatory full of various plants and flowers.
After touring the estate and the grounds, be sure to drop by the winery. You can take a tour of the underground cellars, sample several different types, and pick up a bottle of your favourite wine to take home.
You can visit the Biltmore Estate every day from 9AM to 5PM. Tickets cost $70 for adults and $35 for youth with a free audio guide.
Pro tip – if you book your tickets at least a week in advance, you save $10! It’s about a 15-minute drive from downtown to reach the estate, which you can find on the map here.

2. Take a Walking Tour
Whenever I’m in a new city, I love going on a walking tour to get to know the place. Asheville is a small city and is very walkable, so you can easily explore downtown on your own two feet.
Thanks to Explore Asheville, you can choose between two excellent self-guided walking tours of Asheville. They have an urban trail as well as an architecture trail that you can follow.
Both have interactive and printable maps, and the urban trail even has an audio guide as well.
If you’d prefer to go with a guide, you can sign up for the Tip-Based Asheville Walking Tour.
This excellent walking tour is about 2.5 hours long, taking you through downtown Asheville while covering all the highlights and insider tips on where to eat and drink (plus, some samples along the way). The cost is based on tips, so whatever you feel is appropriate.
3. Drive the Blue Ridge Parkway
If you’re wondering what to do in Asheville, just jump in your car and take a cruise on the Blue Ridge Parkway. This National Parkway and All-American Road is part of the Appalachian Mountains and one of the most scenic drives in the country.
The Blue Ridge Parkway actually stretches through both Virginia and North Carolina. It’s 755 km (496 miles) long and is full of viewpoints, hiking trails, historic sites, and so much more. This is one of the most incredible places to visit on your trip to Asheville.
Every time we have people come to visit when we’re in Asheville, one of the first things we do is head out for a drive on the Blue Ridge. These amazing views really never get old, so I don’t mind going back every time we’re in town.
4. Climb Mt. Pisgah
As I mentioned, there’s a lot to see and do along the Blue Ridge Parkway. One of the best things to do in Asheville NC is hiking up the trail at Ms. Pisgah, which is easily accessible via the Parkway.
It’s about a 45 minute to hour-long hike to reach the top of Mt. Pisgah. While it’s not exactly an easy hike, it’s not too difficult. The hike is about 1.2 miles (1.85 km) to the top and there are plenty of places to rest along the way.
There’s a large TV tower at the top and an observation deck. From here, you can enjoy some of the best views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the city off in the distance. You can find the trailhead for Mt. Pisgah on the map here.

5. Dinner With a View at Pisgah Inn
After hiking up Mt. Pisgah, you’re sure to work up an appetite. While you can certainly bring a picnic lunch to have on the Parkway, my vote goes to enjoying a meal at the nearby Pisgah Inn.
Grab a drink and head out to their observation deck while you wait for a table. They have plenty of rocking chairs where you can kick back and soak in the amazing views.
Having eaten here several times, I’ll give my recommendations for the fried green tomatoes and the walnut crusted mountain trout.
They’re open from 11:30-4 for lunch and then again from 5-9 for dinner. You can get directions and find the Pisgah Inn on the map here.
If you’d rather be up in the mountains than down in town, you might want to look into booking a room here. It’s pretty awesome when you can wake up and have the Blue Ridge Mountains right outside your window!
6. Play Disc Golf
If you enjoy the great outdoors, one of the top things to do in Asheville is playing a round of disc golf.
For those unfamiliar with the sport, it’s just like golf but with a frisbee instead. The goal is to get your disc into a basket with the least amount of throws, and you can use a variety of different discs in the process.
The biggest difference between disc golf and regular golf is that it’s almost always totally free! That’s the case at nearby Richmond Hill, an excellent course and local hangout. Get directions and find the park on the map here.
If you’ve never played disc golf before and don’t have any gear, there are plenty of shops in Asheville where you can pick up a starter kit.
For about $10, you can get a driver, a mid-range disc, and a putter. Just try not to lose them on your first round. Most people write their name and phone number on discs as a precautionary measure.

7. Feast on Southern Food
Asheville is home to plenty of amazing restaurants of all different styles. If you’re travelling here for the first time, I recommend sticking mostly to southern fare. After all, you’re in the south even though the State is North Carolina!
For brunch, a solid choice is Biscuit Head. Their slogan is “put some south in your mouth” and that’s exactly what you’ll do here. Choose your favourite biscuit (I love the pulled pork) and top it off with their various jams and butters.
One of the best restaurants in Ashville, in my humble opinion, is Home Grown. This local eatery serves local food cooked by local people, so you know your money is going right into the local economy when you eat here.
I personally love their Redneck Pot Pie or buttermilk fried chicken. You can see Home Grown and much more in our “Streets, Beats & Eats” video on Asheville.
youtube
8. Drink Local Craft Beer
Asheville has been named Beer City USA on several occasions. There are over 40 breweries and beer pubs here in total! As such, sampling local craft beer should be high atop your list of things to do in Asheville NC.
Walking around Asheville, you’re never too far from a brewery. Some of the best places for a beer include Asheville Brewing Company, Burial, and Green Man. The best way to find your favourite brew is ordering up a flight to sample 4-5 different styles.
While they’re not exactly microbreweries, it’s also worth it to visit the Asheville locations of New Belgium and Sierra Nevada. The former has a scenic location right along the French Broad River, while the latter is a bit of a hike as it’s out by the airport.
If you want to take a tour of either, be sure to sign up well in advance! I’ve been to a lot of breweries, and these are two of the best I’ve ever seen.
9. Visit a Few Museums
If you’re downtown and aren’t quite sure what to do in Asheville, why not drop into one of the city’s museums for a bit? Whether you’re interested in art, science, or even pinball, there’s a museum for you here.
The Asheville Art Museum has recently had some major renovations and is bigger and better than ever!
It’s open from 10-5 Tuesday-Saturday and 1-5 on Sunday. It’s totally free to visit, but donations are very much appreciated. You can find the museum on the map here.
Just a block away, you’ll find the Asheville Museum of Science. They’ve got lots of cool exhibitions and displays that are fun for all ages. It’s open Monday-Saturday from 10-5 and from 1-5 on Sunday and costs $7-8 to visit.
If you love a good retro pinball machine or video game, you’ll definitely want to check out the Asheville Pinball Museum.
For $15, you can play as many games as you want on their 80+ machines. Hours vary depending on the day, but they’re typically open until 9PM. Get directions to the museum here.

10. Explore the RAD (River Arts District)
For art lovers, one of the top things to do in Asheville NC is visiting the RAD (River Arts District).
Hundreds of artists have galleries and studios in this area along the French Broad River. It’s a really fun place to explore for a while, especially on the weekends.
On the second Saturday of each month, the RAD is a very lively place. There are demonstrations, workshops, wine tastings, live music, and a lot more. There’s even a free trolley that you can ride as you bounce around the different venues.
Whether you’re interested in painting, ceramics, photography, or jewelry, you’ll find something to enjoy in the RAD.
While you’re over here, be sure to drop in another excellent local craft brewery — Wedge. You can find the River Arts District on the map here.
11. Fun on the River
Speaking of the French Broad River, there are lots of fun things to do there. Well, at least during the warmer months. There’s not much going on in the dead of winter…
One of my absolute favourite things to do in Asheville is tubing down the river.
The best way to enjoy the Homer Simpson of water sports is by signing up with this tubing experience. It’s like a floating pub crawl!
I won’t’ give it all away, but it’s a lot of fun and you can also bring your own beverages to put in the onboard cooler. Click here for details.
If you’d prefer a bit more activity than just lazily floating down the river, you can also rent a kayak or a SUP (stand up paddleboard). There are a few different places that rent boards as well as tours you can sign up for to get out and enjoy a day on the river.
12. Listen to Buskers
Walking around downtown Asheville, you’re sure to hear a lot of music. Some of it may be coming out of shops and bars, but more often than not, it’s actual musicians jamming in the street!
It’s very common to see people “busking” on the streets of Asheville. Busking is when you play music in public and simply open your guitar/violin/keyboard case to take tips from passersby.
The various musicians busking around downtown Asheville really add to the eclectic atmosphere of the city. If you enjoy the music, stop for a while to listen and toss a few bucks in to show your appreciation.
13. Day Trip to Hot Springs
If you’re looking for some good old-fashioned R&R on your trip to Asheville, then you may want to add in a day trip out to the town of Hot Springs, NC. It’s not just a clever name, as the small town is home to some amazing hot springs.
It’s about a 45-minute drive from downtown Asheville out there, and it’s well worth it.
The Hot Springs Resort & Spa has amazing mineral baths and spa services. After a busy couple of days exploring the city, a nice massage and a soak in the hot springs is just what you need.
The resort has a variety of different options, so be sure to check their website for details.
Just be sure to book in advance, as it’s a popular place. They also have several different choices for on-site accommodation if you’re interested. You can get directions to the Hot Springs resort on the map here.

14. Join the Friday Drum Circle
One of the coolest things to do in Asheville NC, for both visitors and locals alike, is joining in the weekly drum circle. People of all ages and backgrounds come out to enjoy this fun and free event.
The drum circle goes on every Friday at Pritchard Park downtown. People usually start showing up around 5 and it gets bigger and bigger until the whole park is packed with people drumming, dancing, and singing.
Even if you don’t have a drum of any kind, it’s a good time. You can just dance to the music and enjoy connecting with people. Once the drum circle wraps up, you’re smack dab in the middle of downtown Asheville on a Friday night.

15. Shop at the Grove Arcade
If you’re looking to do a little shopping before you leave Asheville, be sure to swing by the Grove Arcade downtown. This building has a very interesting history, which I recommend you read before going there!
At the Grove Arcade, you’ll find a very diverse array of shops, including the Batter Park Book Exchange and Champagne Bar, Nutz About Fudge, the Woodrow Instrument Company, and much more.
In addition to all the great shops inside, there’s also the Outdoor Artists Market. You’ll find paintings, clothing, jewelry, and local honey, among other things. The Grove Arcade is open from 10-6 Monday-Saturday and noon-5 on Sunday.
16. Treat Yourself at the Grove Park Inn
For those who enjoy the finer things in life, a trip out to the Grove Park Inn is a must when visiting Asheville. In case you were wondering, yes, it is the same Grove who started the shopping arcade.
E.W. Grove is known as the “father of modern Asheville.” He was a self-made millionaire who moved here in 1910 and opened this grand inn soon thereafter. A hundred years later, and it’s still going strong as one of Asheville’s premier resorts.
Even if you don’t splurge on a room at the inn, it’s well worth it to pay a visit here.
Book yourself a nice spa treatment and then grab a hand-crafted cocktail and a bite to eat at their Sunset Terrace Lounge, or choose one of the many other options for wining and dining.

17. Take a Hike
By far one of the most popular things to do in Asheville is hiking.
If you’ve got your own wheels and are willing to drive 45 minutes to an hour outside of town, you have tons of options for excellent hiking trails.
In addition to the aforementioned Mt. Pisgah trail, other great options include Catawba Falls, the Devil’s Courthouse, or Max Patch. A hike to the latter can be rewarded with a trip to the hot springs, as it’s a pretty short drive between the two.
There really are tons of options for hiking in Asheville with varying difficulty and distance from town. Just check this awesome Asheville trail finder to figure out which option is best for you!
18. Explore the North Carolina Arboretum
Another fantastic choice for spending time outdoors in Asheville is the North Carolina Arboretum. Here you’ll find some lovely cultivated gardens, a bonsai exhibit, hiking & biking paths, and much more.
It’s a great place to spend a couple of hours, especially on a nice day.
Actually, the arboretum is also a solid choice in the colder months thanks to the Winter Lights display they put up. The place really turns into a winter wonderland from late November until the end of the year.
The arboretum is open from 8-7 in the fall/winter and from 8-9 in the spring/summer. They don’t charge an entrance fee per person, but rather charge a flat fee of $14 per vehicle to enter. You can find them on the map here.

19. Go on a Ghost Tour
One of the spookiest things to do in Asheville is going on a ghost tour. Haunted Asheville has a few different options for chilling, thrilling tours that are fun for the whole family.
On their classic walking tour, you’ll learn the stories behind some of Asheville’s most haunted spots from a resident ghost expert. Tours usually run at 8PM and sometimes there’s another one at 9. Tickets cost $23 for adults and $15 for children 9-14, while those under 8 go for free.
Another option is their Biltmore Village Mystery Tour. Apparently, you learn about a kangaroo that appeared from another dimension on this tour. Sounds cool to me!

20. Sundowners at Sky Bar
After a busy day of exploring Asheville, there’s no better place to watch the sun go down with a nice adult beverage than SkyBAR.
Grab a cocktail and take in the amazing views from this rooftop bar, and you’ll see why Asheville really is the Land of the Sky.
While there are some quality beer and wine choices on the menu, this place is all about the cocktails. I personally recommend their Mixed Berry Mule or the Peach Ginger Whiskey Sour. You really can’t go wrong with any of the options.
SkyBAR is located in the historic Flatiron Building in downtown Asheville.
Half the fun of visiting there is going up in the old school elevator, which still requires an operator. They open at 5 during the week and an hour earlier on the weekends.
21. See a Show
No matter what night of the week it is, there are plenty of shows going on in Asheville. Take your pick between theatrical performances, stand-up comedy, live music, and more.
The live music scene is one of the things I love the most about Asheville.
The city has several venues that range in size and style, so you get all sorts of different acts coming to town. Some of the best places to see music here include the Asheville Music Hall, Salvage Station, and the Orange Peel.

Shutterstock
