Can I get a what it Would be like to marry Asher Adams with a biracial reader Please hopefully if I’m not bothering you
MARRYING ASHER...
Personally I don’t see Asher settling down until he reaches his thirties? Obviously they’re all teens now so I can’t really judge this too harshly but this is just a guess and is absolutely sure what he needs in a relationship rather than what he wants
You’ll probably have a outside wedding
Either mid-spring or early summer
You invited everyone you knew throughout the years, including Asher’s parents yet that was a sore subject !
Which was odd since you had a great and loving relationship with your parents and even pushed for it to work with Asher and his
You two were at odds about this although you tried to be understanding, you just didn’t fully get it since your situation was completely different and healthy
Asher seemed to find common ground with his parents at some point in your relationship, he eased into it overall but seemed to connect with his mother first and even found that he liked her new boyfriend or whatever...but he still treaded lightly which was sad to have your guard up when it came to your own blood
Whereas with his father, he had to handle him every time with a grain of salt
That man was still working through his verbal abusing ways and excessive drinking...
Then Asher had a falling out with both parents yet again and even went forth to not invite them to the wedding but you went behind his back and did it anyway. You still felt like they deserved to be a part of this
you were a nervous wreck getting dressed and had all your friends and family trying to ease your anxiety
“We could spark it up?” Simone suggested earning a few side eyes from your other friends and the older women in the room, “...or not.”
you’d eventually pull yourself together and did take a swing from a bottle once your grandmother, aunts, great-aunts, and mother left the room briefly to keep a eye on everything else
Part of you were nervous about today as you stared at your reflection in the mirror and the future but there was one thing you did know, you loved Asher and you wanted to spend the rest of your life with him
You almost don’t follow all of the traditions wanting to spend the night in the same hotel room with the man but ofc both parties shut that down, it apparently made the experience more worth it sleeping in different beds before your big day?
Anyways you were a little late, about ten mins to get to the alter and that put some nerves in Asher’s belly as he waited almost patiently for you
He ignored the fact that he made eye contact with his dad and gave a tight-lipped smile to his mom in the audience
He was in complete awe as he watched you come down the aisle with one of your parents
His eyes were slick with tears but he wasn’t going to let those falls right now as he took you in and you both made the oath for better or for worse
He dips you as you kiss earning praise from everyone around
There’s rice thrown as you hold hands leaving the garden venue behind to your horse and carriage
You assumed you’d ride out in either a limo or one of Asher’s expensive sports cars that he purchased after getting his check on a celebrity reality tv show...yeah he doesn’t like to talk about that part so much that he joked about and you took seriously. It’s not that you really minded...you just wanted more than your usual life style
So you were a gapping fish when you saw the horse and carriage with Asher smirking and dipping his head, “Anything for my baby.”
The two of you had money that you both worked hard for, you had a little more help than he did which he liked to throw in your face when it came to disagreements but nonetheless you both still had a networth that you were proud of
He was more flashy while you were toned down when it came to material things
Anything you wanted particularly to this wedding he was going to pay for it all in full he didn’t care how much it costed as long as it meant you could be together
The wedding was not over the top but you were definitely inspired by Kimye’s + Farrah Fawcett & Lee Majors wedding
You took TIME in planning your wedding, almost too long that people thought you’d never get to this point. But you wanted it to be your own version of perfect and perfect it was
Layla’s wedding was inspired by Diana Ross + arne naess’ with a touch of Ciara & Russell Wilson’s so she was more than happy to help if you’d let her and you did take some suggestions from your friend
When the reception came around you were more than willing to smash cake into Asher’s face instead of feeding it to him. When he wanted to return the favor you took off just to slide on some ice due to your ice sculpture melting
You were pretty positive you broke or fractured something but that wasn’t going to stop you from enjoying your night
Asher let out some tears when he made his speech and when speeches were made from his parents to him and you
He hadn’t said anything to you about inviting his parents but figured he didn’t want to ruin this but you could tell on the ride to the reception that it bothered him a little bit
You were too happy to further push the subject and knew he would talk about it when he wanted to or until you remembered and pushed for him to open up to you again
You had a live band play your first dance together as a married couple with you leaning on him more now than ever due to your injured leg
“you sure you don’t want to rest?” Asher asked as you laid against his chest, your bare feet resting on top of his fancy dress shoes
You had your eyes closed feeling his heartbeat and listening to the tempo of your wedding song choice, “I’ll rest when this lifetime is over.”
The next morning your leg is the size of a balloon and Asher immediately takes you the emergency room even tho you’re being nonchalant about it
thankfully it was just a torn meniscus that didn’t require surgery and would heal on its own but was that stopping you from leaving to your honeymoon this weekend? Hell no
Asher tried to persuade you to move the flight back at least two weeks or more but you weren’t having it
So off to Switzerland you went to stay in a chalet with you limping around or using a crutch + the host even offered you a scooter to get around after meeting and hearing what happened
“This one is either really hard headed or insanely strong.” One of the host, which consisted of twin brothers joked in broken English to the two of you
“Oh it’s definitely hard headed.” Asher answered glancing over as you happily ate the Raclette they had prepared for you both
Humming you replied in one of their common languages, “why not both?” Which earned some laughter from the twins while you winked
You were fluent in four languages and Swiss German happened to be one of them
You repeated what you told Asher and he took a deep inhale than exhale, “what am I going to do with you?”
“Love me, duh! But you’ve got time to figure it out.” You replied leaning forward to share a long peck with the man you deeply cherished
One thing about you is, nothing would stop or hold you back from living life and that was what you intended with the man you loved right by your side

The Lost Being Found (Reggie x OC) Chapter 1 - Finally Free
The night Avalon Hayes meets Reggie Peters throws them both for a loop. Has she found someone that makes her feel the most seen in her whole life, that makes her realize that she does deserve love? Has he found someone that makes him feel like the most important, that gives him reason to believe that love isn’t doomed to fail?
I don't own Julie and the Phantoms, I just own the Hayes family and their storyline. This has been cross posted on my Ao3, wattpad, and fanfiction.net accounts all under doctorsgirl262. I have no beta, so we die like the boys ;)
I imagine Ava looking like Elle Fanning and Matt like Asher Angel.
Anway, without further ado, chapter 1:
“What do you think, Nana?” Ava asked, pulling a light pink dress with flowers on it that fell to her knees, holding it up to her body.
“It looks beautiful, Avalon. Maybe you’ll meet a cute boy tonight,” Peggy Hayes grinned, wiggling her eyebrows slightly as her granddaughter’s face grew red in indignation.
“Nana,” she whined.
“Or girl,” Peggy revised, grabbing Ava’s hairbrush from her side table and offering it to her. “Like I told you when you were younger, there are plenty of ghosts around to fall in love with.”
Ava shot her a half-hearted glare while taking the brush from her. “How were we supposed to know that you actually were seeing ghosts?”
“Well, you believe me now,” Peggy shrugged, ignoring her granddaughter’s look.
“I’m dead, Nana. Of course I believe you now,” she rolled her eyes, pinning two strands of hair to the back of her head before spinning around to show off the look.
“Beautiful,” Peggy smiled, silently wishing that she could take a picture of her granddaughter in all her beauty. “Now go before Matt messes with one of the performers.”
Ava’s happy smile quickly grew panicked, thinking about the last time her brother had been left alone with lots of musicians.
“Bye, Nana. Love you,” she tapped the table three times before poofing away from her bedroom.
She landed inside Eats & Beats, a local cafe where talent agents roamed around looking for their next up and coming star.
Her brother was nowhere in sight, which wasn’t a good thing, she thought to herself. She watched as a girl, dressed in all pink with a pink wig, walked in with an entourage of different colored girls, and groaned.
Ava had seen Carrie Wilson perform a handful of times at Eats & Beats, though typically, she had noticed, had been when someone around Carrie’s school performed there as well.
She had never been a fan of Dirty Candy, though she begrudgingly could admit that sometimes their songs weren’t so terrible.
She watched as Carrie went backstage, leaving her backup dancers to look around the cafe, none of them looked particularly happy to be there that late.
“Matthew Rhys Hayes!” she yelled, a little annoyed by the lack of her brother.
Had she been more attentive, she would have noticed three teenage boys whip their heads at her words, surprised to see someone yelling in the semi-quiet venue.
However, their shock was somewhat replaced with understanding as a taller lady walked through her, and the blonde girl didn’t seem to mind.
“Ava! I’ve been looking all over for you,” Matt exclaimed, panic clear as day as he ran towards her.
“Sure,” she nodded sarcastically, throwing her arm around his shoulder to rub at his hair.
“Aw, come on, sis. I didn’t do anything, you gotta believe me.”
She raised her eyebrows. “After last time? That poor guitarist ran out crying.”
“Scouts honor,” he said, raising his hand.
“You were never a scout, Matt.”
“I promise, I was just watching the previous band pack their things into their cars. They weren’t very gentle and I wanted to make sure the instruments would be okay.”
Ava’s face softened, grabbing his face and squeezing. “Aw, you’re so sweet. How was I blessed with such a caring brother?”
“Ava,” he groaned, but didn’t try fighting her. They both knew that he loved the attention she gave him.
“So, did I miss anyone good?” she asked, turning her attention towards the stage, watching as Dirty Candy walked backstage, excluding Carrie.
“No I-”
“Excuse me,” a voice tried to cut off Matt, but he continued talking. “The last band was the best so far, they played some covers of ‘Arctic Monkeys’.”
“Excuse me!” the voice said again, though this time Ava felt a hand go through her shoulder. She whipped around to see a teenage girl, maybe a little younger than she was, staring at her in shock.
“Oh my god,” the curly haired girl gasped. “Are you both ghosts?”
“Way to state the obvious,” Matt whispered, though grunted when Ava’s elbow flew into his waist.
“Wait, you look super familiar!” she exclaimed, taking a step closer to Ava and Matt for a closer look. She squinted, looking the two up and down.
“You… is Miss Peggy your grandma?”
“You know Nana?” Ava couldn’t help but ask, looking towards Matt unsure.
“I used to stop by her house when I was younger. My… my mom used to make cookies to take to her. But when my mom started getting sick, she stopped making them and I stopped going,” Julie trailed off, and a small frown grew on Ava’s face.
“I’m really sorry for your loss,” Ava told the girl, reading between the lines.
“You too.”
“Julie! Over here!” a girl with long box braids called out, standing in front of three boys that looked like they were about the same age as Ava.
Ava took a second to look over Julie, now that her attention wasn’t on the two ghosts. What stood out to her the most was the white microphone she was gripping tightly, though she didn’t seem to notice.
“I’m Matt, by the way,” he added, drawing Julie’s attention. “And this is my older sister Avalon.”
“But you can call me Ava, or A, or basically anything,” she grinned, which Julie returned.
“It’s nice to meet you two, but I have to go. I’m on after Dirty Candy,” she rolled her eyes, and a giggle burst through Ava’s lips.
“Oh, I think we’ll get along well.”
Matt shook his head slightly while giving Julie a thumbs up. “Good luck!”
“Thanks,” she grinned, before running towards her friend. “I’m coming, Flynn!”
The two siblings watched as Julie left, and they each took a moment to process what happened.
“You know, I thought it was weird when Nana was able to see us. But for Julie to see us, that’s simultaneously freaking out in a good and bad way,” Ava told him, unable to take her eyes off of Julie.
“Hey, at least we have a new friend now?” he tried to exclaim, but it came out as more of a question, making both of them wince.
“Maybe her friends can see us too,” Ava suggested, turning her attention to the three boys, already knowing that Flynn would have spotted the two of them already if she could have.
On Flynn’s right stood the tallest of the trio. Ava couldn’t tell if he was trying to go for a 90s look or if that was a popular style with the guys in 2020. The boy next to him was brunet, and while he was wearing a tank top like his other friend, he had a plaid shirt tied around his waist. The other tank topped boy reminded Ava of her brother, and she glanced back at Matt out of the corner of her eye.
She almost laughed when she realized that he was wearing almost the exact same outfit, just with a Nirvana t-shirt rather than a tank top.
“The one in the ‘rock and roll’ tank top kinda looks like a Chad,” Ava admitted, the hair really making the appearance.
“He’s nothing like my Chad, Chad Davenforth.”
“Were you watching High School Musical 2 again?”
“Maybe,” he mumbled.
“Next up, Dirty Candy,” the announcer spoke, cutting into their conversation. They gave each other a look, though slowly gave Carrie their attention.
“Hope you all came to have a great time!” Carrie exclaimed with a fake giggle.
As she put on a pair of sunglasses, Ava couldn’t help but wonder which song they’d perform today. As long as it wasn’t ‘Wow’, she’d be happy.
Whenever I walk in the room
All the focus on me
The way I talk, the way I move
They all want on my team
“I thought you didn’t like her?” Matt asked smuggly, and Ava turned to him, unaware that she had been dancing along to the music.
Not tryin' to brag, brag
But I'm flawless
I'm taking over your playlist
Ain't perfect but I can't miss, yeah
The party don't start 'til I walk in
While no one else seemed to notice, Ava and Matt were shocked to say the least when Julie's tall friend appeared behind Carrie looking confused.
After a moment of hesitation, he began following the backup dancers’ moves, and Ava was entertained to say the least.
“I think Julie’s friends might be ghosts,” Ava whispered to Matt.
He thought about it for a moment before nodding. “Her reaction to us being ghosts was mild at most. If I met a ghost I’d be freaking out.”
Ava’s eyes widened as she realized that he was right.
I'm stealing all the attention
Don't get me started on mentions, yeah
Carrie walked to the back of the stage, jumping through his body. He didn’t seem to mind though, dancing opposite of her with a huge smile.
Some might say I sound conceited
They don't get the shine that I get
Some get jealous
They can't help it
They wish they were me, oh
As he danced with Carrie, Ava tried to follow his lead, snapping her head to the side along with the music.
And when he poofed away, she couldn’t help but deflate sadly. He made the performance 100x times better, she decided.
I keep the party going all night, all night
I set the trends that you all like, all like
I make an entrance when I don't try, don't try
'Cause all I see is all eyes on me
I only lead, I never follow, follow
I never open 'cause it's my show, my show
Don't know if people think I'm shallow, shallow
But all I see is all eyes on me
She sat up straight as he popped back onto the stage, staring at Carrie with a smile. He followed her around the stage, performing off of her in a way that made Ava’s smile huge.
When I grow up, I wanna be me, be me
The way he snapped his hip to the side to the music had Ava following suit, and she aptly ignored her brother’s groan.
I'm my own goals, just talking honestly
Must have won the lottery
Ain't no one as hot as me
Stealing looks, it's robbery
Everywhere I go, all eyes on me
When he ran to the back of the group and jumped behind them all, Ava let out a big laugh, enjoying his performance greatly. This was no longer Dirty Candy’s performance, it was his.
But all I see is all eyes on me
When the music hit its final beat, the blond posed to the side with his hands in the air and a bright smile on his face.
“Yeah blond dude! You killed it!” Ava stood up and cheered, her smile matching his.
“Makin’ me blush,” he bounced around, addressing the crowd mainly, before poofing in front of Ava and Matt.
“Hi,” he told them, albeit awkwardly.
“You were amazing,” she gushed, throwing her hands up to emphasize her words.
“In the words of my sister, ‘You killed it’, dude,” Matt agreed with an equally excited smile, though nudged Ava.
“Thanks! I’m Alex,” he held out his hand.
Matt grabbed it first, missing the small smile that appeared on Ava’s face. “I’m Matt.”
“I’m Ava,” she waved.
“Sorry, I’m on next,” Alex said suddenly, looking over his shoulders. “It was great meeting you both.”
The two Hayes stood in silence for a moment before Ava threw her arm around Matt’s shoulder, pulling him closer. “Well he was cute.”
“Come on, Ava,” he sighed, resting his head on her shoulder as he waited for her to let go. She held up her hands as a sign of defeat and step back, letting him move out of her reach.
“Okay, it looks like we’re closing the night with one more group,” the announcer said, and an apology slipped out of Ava’s mouth. Normally they had more performances, and she was feeling pretty bad now about missing most of the night.
He waved her off with a smile. “You’ve seen the best of the performances so far.”
“Julie and the… Fat Ones,” the announcer said with a shrug.
Ava looked back at Julie who caught her eye and gave Ava a tight smile. She tried to smile back, but it slipped when she saw Carrie and her friend laugh at Julie.
Julie turned and gave her shaggy haired friend a look while Alex and her other friend looked at him expertated.
As Julie walked up to the stage, Ava caught her eye and sent her a little thumbs up, feeling Matt wrap his arm around her next to do the same thing.
“Hi,” she chuckled awkwardly. “It’s actually Julie and the Phantoms.”
Matt laughed. “Well, that’s an understatement.”
“Dork,” Ava laughed, watching as Julie steeled herself before placing her fingers over the keys.
An awkward silence fell over the cafe as Julie’s friend turned on a machine.
Hearts on fire
We're no liars
So we say what we wanna say
I'm awakened
No more faking
So we push all our fears away
Don't know if I'll make it 'cause I'm falling under
Close my eyes, and feel my chest beating like thunder
I wanna fly
Come alive
Watch me shine
As the boys poofed onto the stage, Ava and Matt could hear murmurs from the other views.
“I heard they’re a hologram band from Sweden,” a voice whispered behind her, and Ava raised her eyebrows.
“I won’t lie, I’m very confused right now,” she whispered to her brother, and he nodded slightly.
I got a spark in me
Hands up if you can see
And you're a part of me
Hands up if you're with me
Now 'til eternity
Hands up if you believe
Been so long, and now we're finally free
We're all bright now
What a sight now
Coming out like we're fireworks
Marching on proud
Turn it up loud
'Cause now we know what we're worth
Ava couldn’t take her eye’s off of the bassist and Alex. Everyone around them seemed to be watching Julie and the guitarist, but she was more intrigued by the others.
We know we can make it we're not falling under
Close my eyes and feel my chest beating like thunder
I wanna fly
Come alive
Watch me shine
I got a spark in me
Hands up if you can see
And you're a part of me
Hands up if you're with me
Now 'til eternity
Hands up if you believe
Been so long, and now we're finally free
I got a spark in me
Hands up if you can see
And you're a part of me
Hands up if you're with me
Now 'til eternity
Hands up if you believe
Been so long, and now we're finally free
Ava was in awe at the chemistry between Julie and their guitarist, watching as they sang to each other. If she had to bet, neither of them would have noticed the rest of their band or the audience.
I got a spark in me
(I got a spark in me)
And you're a part of me
(And you're a part of me)
Now 'til eternity
(Now 'til eternity)
Been so long, and now we're finally free
I got a spark in me
Hands up if you can see
And you're a part of me
Hands up if you're with me
Now 'til eternity
Hands up if you believe
Been so long, and now we're finally free (yeah, yeah, yeah)
I got a spark in me
Hands up if you can see
And you're a part of me
Hands up if you're with me
Now 'til eternity
Hands up if you believe
Been so long, and now we're finally free
Finally free
Yeah
After Julie sang the final line of the song, the four of them bowed, but the boys poofed away back to where they had been earlier, talking amongst themselves excitedly.
“Yeah, Julie! Amazing!” Ava called out to her, and Matt stood up, clapping widely.
“Thank you! We’re Julie and the Phantoms, tell your friends!”
Julie waved at the two as she ran down the stairs toward Flynn and the rest of the band. “See you two tomorrow!”
Neither Ava or Matt really thought about Julie’s words as they waved back at her before poofing back home for the night.

The movie Us is a thriller that has a family fighting to stay alive from their doppelganger killers dressed in all with gold scissors Good *Lupita Nyong'o as Adelaide Wilson (née Thomas) & Red. Lupita is hands down one of the best actresses in the film. Lupita could become the next Meryl Streep. Lupita is playing both characters at the same time while maintaining her composure with both characters. If this film didn't have Lupita, Us would have been DOA. * The black family is natural and realistic. Horror movies and thriller movies do an awful job at portraying black families. Furthermore, the black family in Us was smart and they adaptive to survive doubleganger invasion. The child actors were amazing and I see a lot of potential in them. *Jordan knows how to make interesting characters. Besides the black family, the Tyler family I did like as well. Tim from cult classic Tim & Eric show. Tim is a lazy husband/father, but you don't hate the guy. Elisabeth Moss was good as well. Her character is noisy neighbor mother and wife but you don't hate her as well. *Music by Michael Abels is awesome, and the way Abels used the 90s hit song, "I got 5 on it" spot on choice. Therefore the music doesn't miss a beat and it matches the tone of what our characters are going through. The last fight between Red and Adelaide perfect. Bad *The plot is simple at first, but when you start thinking about it. The plot becomes complex to a downright confusing mess. The big twist wasn't all that special in my book. *The backstory of monsters of the film is broken logic. So the government clones almost everybody in America. *The ending itself left on the very ambiguous thread of unanswered questions. *The twist was pretty weak because of the film itself kind of spoiled it with a sprinkle of foreshadowing. The film didn't have to show viewers that scene. Score: Low Badass Son/Dynamic Duo Summary, I did enjoy this film very much. Us is an all-time favorite thriller. Lupita is an amazing actress that delivers is the powerful emotions of a mother and the doppelganger. The black family was a smart and adaptive group. The supporting cast did a good job. The music is epic. However, the story and the twist is really weak and didn't help the film either. The film backstory with the monsters has broken logic. Us isn't all that scary. Lastly, there was a couple of plot holes the film doesn't fully explain To conclude, you'll overlook those flaws very easily thanks to awesome character development, epic music, and finally, black people survive a horror/thriller film. Shazam: Billy Baston 14-year-old kid is the chosen one to becomes the hero Shazam to stop the 7 deadly sins. Good * Zachary Levi as Shazam is enjoyable and I did like his character because he brought that energy of Shazam while playing as a man-child in a good way from Tom Hanks Big. The kid actor for Billy, Asher Angel is decent. *Billy foster family did like. Jack Dylan Grazer as Frederick "Freddy" Freeman jas great chemistry with Zachary Levi as Shazam. Faithe Herman as Darla Dudley I liked as well. * The action is really good, you can see what was going on, and the dark fight scenes were really cool too. Along with the special effects. Bad * Shazam shouldn't have been a 2-hour + movie at best. We get a filler arc like Mark Strong character. I gave no fucks. *The writing is awful. It ranges from cringe-worthy to plain out stupid dialogue and or stupid the characters. *The second act in the film becomes a horror show out of nowhere. * Easter eggs of other DC characters got very annoying fast. I never liked the DC Cinematic Universe because it was always depressing to watch. Score: Very High Sigh Okay Summary: I did enjoy Shazam once the second starts up with Billy getting the power, Freddy has good chemistry with Shazam Zachary Levi. The action is super clean. However, the film is a mess with stupid dialogue, Mark Strong character is boring to care about. It's not Strong fault. The overuse of Gore for the monsters killing humans wasn't necessary for my book. Lastly, Shazam is the Superman movie, I always wanted. I hope the next film cuts out stupid school drama. Tighten up a dialogue and plot. Furthermore, I hope the next film focuses heavily on the family as a team. Ratings: Bullshit City Boring as Hell Sigh Okay Badass Son Must Watch by Izzy Meh-Zone

LMK OC COMPETITION - ROUND 1

Ling belongs to @camhues
AW (Asher Wilson) belongs to @noteverystarisasun
Learn more about them below the cut!!
Ling:
She’s a jade maiden, I know, stereotypical name and job, but hear me out. Jade Maiden to me is like a subcategory of a warrior, so that’s exactly what Ling is. Another one of her jobs is a guardian for the peach maidens in the celestial realm. She’s laid back, spunky, and confident. She’s fiercely loyal to those she cares about and respects!
AW:
AW is from something called the NESIAS verse, and he was thrown into LMK by some mistake, switching places with his other self, from then forth he took his place, navigating Megapolis with both ease and stress, having other worldly knowledge with both benefits and drawbacks. He is currently getting close to the shady shadow monkey Macaque, as a way to both help each other, he trains Macaque all his power, while Macaque gets him info and other stuff. AW is a descendant of Fenrir Wolf in Norse Mythology, using Nordic Runes as his power, noting that anyone can learn it, so that's why he's teaching Macaque. He's neutral at best, just trying to get through the world and get home. Though obviously, that's not happening very soon, other problems arise from beneath, from history to personal issues.
Personality: AW is described as a young individual characterized by his benevolent actions and clever thinking skills in any stress-inducing situation. He doesn't enjoy getting upset with people, but when angered he does snap back. As much as it would go against his morals, he absolutely can use someone for his advantage, using psychological torture or manipulation, the last time he ever did that was during a hunt. He prefers to stay or to be likeable, normally mirroring another's personality to be in a likeable range, though it sometimes backfires due to the fact AW has poor social connection skills. AW has an hyper-independent mind-state, he does everything on his own without anyone's help. This is likely influenced by his childhood trauma and fear of being abandoned or left alone for long periods of time, being dependent only on himself, but putting others before himself, as a way to 'heal'.

Hyperallergic: The Digital Decline of David Hockney
David Hockney, “Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures)” (1972), acrylic paint on canvas, 2140 x 3048 mm (Lewis Collection © David Hockney, photo credit: Art Gallery of New South Wales / Jenni Carter)
LONDON — Since the passing of Lucian Freud, David Hockney has come to be regarded as the UK’s greatest living painter, his name a byword for extraordinary draftsmanship and an altogether less “passionate” style of painting. The queues snaking around the block for his retrospective at the Tate demonstrate the compelling popularity of his bright colors, the aesthetic pleasantness of his vibrant landscapes spanning his near-60-year career, and his capturing of glamorous sex and sun in the 1960s. Hockney is comparatively dispassionate, however, because his method of working is instructively informed by inquisitive intellectual and technical explorations. Tate Britain curators Chris Stephens, Andrew Wilson, and Helen Little make this clear by their choice to arrange this chronological survey around Hockney’s technical interests, theming each segment in the context of, say, abstraction, naturalism, and optical theories regarding cameras. The chronological method of display overall, however, reinforces what has been cited by many a critic and will be obvious to any visitor: Although the technical interest is in play throughout his career, the visual quality of his work undeniably suffers and declines following his 1960s peak.
Rooms One through Five cover early works of the 1960s, demonstrating Hockney’s prodigious inventiveness in his youth combined with his absolutely breathtaking draftsmanship skills. The period is compartmentalized into technical explorations thus: “Play within a Play” shows his investigations into the conventions of perspective (his reimagining of Hogarth’s famous perspectival oddity in “Kerby (After Hogarth) Useful Knowledge” of 1975 is a cocky artist’s in-joke); “Demonstrations of Versatility” covers his work at the Royal College of Art, in which Hockney selects or discards different styles, treating painting as an intellectual exercise. (He noted, “I deliberately set out to prove I could do four entirely different sorts of picture like Picasso.”) “Paintings with People In” addresses his years after the royal College of Art, visiting Los Angeles for the first time in 1964, pointing out his interest in the painting plane as a stage combined with interplay between modes of abstraction vs. representation: 1963’s “The Hypnotist” quite literally turns the picture plane into a theatre stage, across which two players traverse.
David Hockney, “Domestic Scene, Los Angeles” (1963), oil paint on canvas, 1530 x 1530 mm (Private collection © David Hockney)
David Hockney, “Model with Unfinished Self Portrait” (1977), oil paint on canvas, 1524 x 1524 mm (Private collection c/o Eykyn Maclean © David Hockney)
If all this sounds terribly detached and unemotional, that’s because Hockney’s technical skill is quite clearly completely effortless and natural — almost unbelievably so. His confidence of line and economy of modeling means that painting, for him, presents no struggle whatsoever, hence the room for complete focus on its means to explore intellectual ideas. Such formidable talent is evident in some iconic portraits, lending that distinctive 1960s coolness: “Mr and Mrs Clark and Percy” (1970–71); “American Collectors (Fred and Marcia Weisman)” (1968). The famous LA paintings, including “A Bigger Splash” (1967) and “Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures)” (1972), strip all modeling down to its bare minimum, using precision of line, color choice, and composition that make it all look so still, easy, and unforced. These are presented again in terms of artistic theory — we are invited to observe their use of pictorial framing, and, yes, you probably never noticed that the sensational “A Bigger Splash” has an enormous expanse of unpainted canvas left as a framing device — but their visual punch nonetheless goes straight to the gut.
David Hockney, “A Lawn Being Sprinkled” (1967), acrylic paint on canvas, 1530 x 1530 mm (Lear Family Collection © David Hockney; photo credit: Richard Schmidt)
David Hockney, “Ossie Wearing a Fairisle Sweater” (1970), colored pencil and crayon on paper, 430 x 355 mm (private collection, London © David Hockney)
David Hockney, “Peter Getting Out of Nick’s Pool” (1966), acrylic paint on canvas, 1520 x 1520 mm (National Museums Liverpool, Walker Art Gallery; presented by Sir John Moores 1968 © David Hockney) Photo Credit: Richard Schmidt
It’s all too easy. Thus, one can’t help but feel that the output following this initial starburst tends toward the sloppy. When you’ve encapsulated the 1960s in a singularly iconic body of work, though, why should you bother? This was my repeated thought throughout the subsequent works. Hockney’s landscapes are increasingly abstract from the naturalistic, using freer, more expressive strokes that sometimes don’t actually cover the bare canvas. His colors similarly depart from naturalism in their loudness: all purples, yellows, and greens straight from the tube, applied to all landscapes, whether supposedly LA or East Yorkshire: They could theoretically depict anywhere. Indeed, his recent works of large scale and outdoor depictions of trees tend toward the outright naïve; gone is the precision of hand, that economy replaced with — I hate to say it — what looks an awful lot like laziness. When the final rooms bring the advent of Hockney’s digital paintings, conducted on an iPad, one wonders how much of it is for the technical interest in the “next step” in making art, and how much for the convenience of no longer bothering with the messiness of paint. Perhaps I’m being harsh to an increasingly frail artist who has already more than proven himself, but from a coldly art-historical perspective, given that the iPad lends itself particularly to the naïve tendencies in Hockney’s drawing skills, the case for it here as a method of advancing the means of making art is not exactly convincing.
David Hockney, “Red Pots in the Garden” (2000), oil paint on canvas, 1524 x 1930 mm (private collection, courtesy Guggenheim Asher Associates © David Hockney) Photo Credit: Richard Schmidt
David Hockney, “Garden” (2015), acrylic paint on canvas, 1219 x 1828 mm (collection of the artist © David Hockney; photo Credit: Richard Schmidt)
The show’s curation at times feels forgiving toward this decline, in evidence from the first when it chooses to bend the rules of its own chronological method; the exhibition’s mantra is to show how the “roots of each new direction lay in the work that came before,” and it uses Room One to juxtapose works from the 1960s, 1970s, and one from 2014 to reinforce this cyclical idea, justifying the progression into computer generated images. Thus the brilliant “Rubber Ring Floating in a Swimming Pool” (1971) — gorgeously economic in its geometrical treatment of a plan view of a pool, just two blocks of color with a red circle — sits with 2014’s “4 Blue Stools,” a “photographic drawing” splicing together drawing and digital photos of sitters, with the Tate arguing for its technical concerns with pictorial plane and perspective. The brilliance of Hockney’s early paintings, regardless, still acts as a yardstick that his forays into fiddling with digital manipulation never come close to surpassing.
Similarly, describing Hockney’s experiments with multiscreen video works — shown here in a film recorded by nine cameras of a Yorkshire road over four seasons — as “a cubist film, showing different aspects of the same scene as perceived by a moving observer,” uses backward-facing art-historical terms to describe something we expect to be forward-looking, straining to justify the artist’s ongoing relevance in a contemporary art world which, it must be said, is already leaps ahead of him in its use of cutting-edge technology.
David Hockney, “Hollywood Hills House” (1980), oil paint, charcoal, and paper on canvas, 1524 x 3048 mm (collection Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; gift of Penny and Mike Winton, 1983 © David Hockney)
David Hockney, “9 Canvas Study of the Grand Canyon” (1998), oil paint on nine canvases, 1003 x 1689 mm (Richard and Carolyn Dewey © David Hockney; photo credit: Richard Schmidt)
Despite its best efforts to justify the relevance of his digital experiments, the arc of Hockney’s career remains clear, well presented, and with precision focus on his varying intellectual ideas of pictorial representation. The sheer skill of draftsmanship similarly shines through in intervals as a key element underpinning his freedom to paint naïvely if he desired; as late as the iPad paintings are charcoal pieces observing his native Yorkshire, proof that he can draw if he wants to (though frequently he doesn’t: In his recent show of 80 portraits painted in recent years at the Royal Academy, the work was embarrassing in its wanton laziness). The epic heights he reached in the 1960s, however, are so magnificent that they have apparently given him a free pass ever since.
David Hockney continues at Tate Britain (Millbank, Westminster, London) through May 29.

" Old Scrolls and books line the walls of the large library, a table full of papers and Norse books were left aside and discarded, for now at least. Soft Music was heard playing through the Gramophone throughout the large area, soft footsteps followed by heavy ones was present. Lord Crimson, an overlord for Megapolis, was slow dancing with his Translator that he recently got accustomed to, AW, was it? Either way, he was his Translator at the end of the day,, or Dance, really. "
Old SolarFlare artwork CRIES. Not my best work but hey, if it works, it works. And it's still as cute as can be at the end of the day. Slow dancing for fun to end the work day for research, if you wanna know more about this AU just lemme know !
