Ata: No, not mine. It's your father's.
Asha: ...Oh.
He used to complain about the bitterness of Lao's cigarettes, just to see him smile indulgently before leaning in to silence him with kisses.
He didn't mind the bitterness now. (He's a scavenger, gathering close the ashes of Lao's memory.)

Then Perish: Rong
You Will: Wu

Cool: Jiang, Jay
I’ll Die For You First: Li
Wattana: don’t f***** say that (they’re they only survivor of their family, and they feel like their sister died to protect them. So someone saying “I’d die for you” is a very touch subject to them.)

The Conception and History of AtaLao
This is just a post for me to ramble on about how Ata and Lao (and Asha but he’s like 1/2 not an OC) got started as OCs and recount some of their history leading up to their roles in Under the Desert Sky. So for the one or two of you interested in reading this:
(GIF from awhiteshirt)
It’s long and convoluted so everything is under the ‘read more’ link.
Otherwise, just carry on scrolling through your dash! 8D
The Beginning
To talk about the start of AtaLao, I first need to talk (briefly) about Rogue One and The Lost Bladesman.
So I watched Rogue One and fell deep into Chirrut/Baze. That of course meant watching movies that Donnie Yen (DY) and Jiang Wen (JW) were in, which included The Lost Bladesman.
The Lost Bladesman was set during China’s Three Kingdoms period and starred DY as Guan Yu (GY) and JW as Cao Cao (CC). And lemme just say, in this movie (and in several other Romance of the Three Kingdoms adaptations, including at least one of the Dynasty Warriors games), CC is HELLA THIRSTY for GY. Which kicked off an interest in CC/GY and led me and two friends to evocates’ phenomenal Romance of the Three Kingdoms/The Lost Bladesman series a guide to (dis)honouring your deities which had an interesting approach to A/B/O.
Between that fic series and the many Hong Kong triad films and old “classic” HK films we watched, my friends and I ended up writing an A/B/O HK Triad AU in which CC was the head of a recently resurrected triad trying to protect/build up their home-city, while GY was one of the few good cops in a (obviously) corrupt system.
Anyways, getting to the AtaLao part...
On the left is General Zhang Liao, who acts as CC’s right-hand man in The Lost Bladesman. So naturally, he became CC’s second-in-command in our Triad AU! And look! He is, in fact, Asha! 8D Hence why I say Asha technically is and isn’t an OC LOL
As our Triad AU grew bigger, we added three “elders” to CC’s triad, people who had been important members of the triad before its collapse (due to the police) and were pulled back out of hiding when CC resurrected the triad. One of them, we decided, would be Elder (Ata) Zhang, Asha’s father. (Which was how CC also met Asha.) Elder Zhang had been The Accountant for the triad pre-collapse, knew where all the money in the triad was and went, highly trusted and held in high esteem. He was never arrested by the police, though they did pull him into interrogation once with...not great results for them. (Keeping this PG with minimal violence LOL I can talk about this another time if anyone is interested.)
I, on a whim, decided Elder Zhang’s facecast would be...
Tony Leung because it’s Tony Leung.
CC had his work cut out convincing Elder Zhang and Asha to support his bid for lead of the triad. *nods*
But what happened to Elder Zhang’s mate? Asha’s other parent? (Lao?)
(Aside: Andy Lau as his facecast because I LOVE HIM. And he and Tony Leung have SUCH AMAZING CHEMISTRY and ALL THE FODDER for me to use for inspiration, but I’ll stop myself here before I pic spam.)
WELL.
He died when Asha was about 5 or 6. He was shot and killed by the police while he and Ata were out on a date under suspicion of being a triad member. (”He has the face of a gangster,” they said.) The irony is, he is actually a normal civilian, a low-level architect, and has nothing to do with the triad other than being Ata’s husband.
Thus, by the time our AU took place, Lao hadn’t been present for...over 30 years and was only rarely referenced as a near mythical figure. (;﹏;)
So there we have the beginnings of AtaLao.
Their backstory makes me incredibly sad all the time. Especially when I think about their childhood/courtship and their dreams and plans for their future. I have lots of art drawn, content made, and thousands of words written for them so just say the word and I’ll share LOL
Proper AtaLao
What do I mean by ‘proper’ AtaLao? Well, when we were working on the Triad AU, none of the characters outside of the canon characters GY, CC, etc had names; we just abbreviated actors’ names. (Asha was just called Zhang. Ata was Elder Zhang. Lao was AL.)
Sooo that brings me back to Rogue One and....
The Ascension of the Lord of Imwe *jazz hands*
With so much inspiration material thanks to the movies DY and JW were in (and because I’m a martial arts nut), I started writing a Chirrut/Baze epic wuxia AU titled the above. It involved Chirrut inheriting the title of Lord (Baze as his right-hand / retainer), a power struggle between households to gain/hold the favor of the Emperor, and the Imwe household working to prove the murder of Chirrut’s father. (It is not posted anywhere. Don’t think it’ll ever see the light of day, but it exists. LOL)
Since the story involved such a huge cast, I thought, why not pull in Zhang to help Baze with security. And if I’m gonna bring in Zhang, I should bring in Ata and Lao! And give them a happy ending. ;u;
And as it turned out, Ata worked perfectly to serve as a parallel for Chirrut (and AtaLao for Chirrut/Baze).
(And this part, you’ll notice, I took to fill in his backstory in Under the Desert Sky.) Ata Zhang was the firstborn son of a prominent family, but he was born mute (a reference to an...incident in Triad AU) and treated poorly because of it. He would have been selected to inherit the family title, but was passed over for his “normal” younger brother. He took over the family’s bookkeeping (a reference to his role as The Accountant), and later, bowed to their wishes to an arranged marriage, from which he got Asha.
(Chirrut is the firstborn son of the Imwe family, fully expected not to inherit the title because of his originally sickly constitution and failing eyesight. To the surprise and consternation of many, he did in fact inherit the title.)
As for Lao, he was an orphan taken in by the Zhang family and initially raised to be a servant, before they switched him to security. He met Ata when they were tiny children, and he accidentally found Ata crying over the way people were treating him. Lao ended up promising to always protect Ata, and eventually becomes Ata’s personal bodyguard.
Please know there’s a LOT of PINING, and longing looks, and knowing they have feelings for each other but never acting on them, and then there’s Ata’s marriage, and baby Asha imprinting like a duckling on Lao, and-- aaaaaaaaah ( ゚Д゚)<!!!!!!!!!!!
Eventually though, as I reference in Under the Desert Sky, Ata’s wife leaves, causing a scandal, and the family takes their displeasure out on Asha, which is the last straw for Ata. He takes Asha and leaves, but of course Lao goes with him. They finally work things out, and when we see them in the fic, they’re an old(ish) married couple who joined the Imwe household along with Asha to protect Ata from his younger brother, who is trying to assasinate him to secure his leadership in the family.
That is AtaLao.
(Please look at this picture of them that my dear friend Kei / kannibal on here and twitter drew for me and that has been my phone wallpaper ever since. ♡ฅ(ᐤˊ꒳ฅˋᐤ♪))
And since they already were in a fic with Chirrut and Baze, I figured, why not include them in Under the Desert Sky, an actual SW divergent AU and not just something wildly AU LOL And it works out perfectly as a pseud-parallel(?) with Ata as a Guardian, Lao as a Mando vs Obi as a Jedi, Jango the Mando. d( ̄◇ ̄)b
Other Existing Iterations of AtaLao
I will keep this brief in the form of bullet points:
Infernal Affairs AU - After watching Infernal Affairs, I had to, had to write a mash up of it and our Triad AU. In it, Ata is still an accountant for the Triad, but was planted by the police. Lao is the mole the triad places among the police. Ata and Lao have a sort of missed connection history when they meet in the fic. I do want to finish it someday because I love what I have written so far. Maybe for the zine I’m hypothetically making one day...
In addition to Triad AU, we also ended up creating an epic high fantasy/Three Kingdoms AU and made two additional variations on top of it. The Main AU involved Lao as a High Priest and healer who ends up mentoring one of the Emperors’ daughters in the healing arts, while Ata is a major in the Emperor’s army who ends up leading a lot of supernatural investigations alongside Lao.
Modern AU is a urban fantasy version of the high fantasy AUs, with everyone in similar roles, just updated for the modern age.
AAAAND THAT’S IT. I’ll do a post on AtaLao in Under the Desert Sky sometimes since I know their backstory won’t be much of a focus in the fic. :)
PS I ended up making a little diagram to make sense of the AUs that ended up popping up in what order and from what influence. Not sure it’s actually helpful to anyone but here is it:
#miya rambles#atalao#my ocs#long post#probably not of interest to most people so just carry on 8D#I could yell about them all day#under the desert sky

2017-02-28 Categories: Technology
[Barcelona, Spain, February 28, 2017] Today at Global 5G Test Summit, AT&T, China Mobile, NTT DOCOMO, Vodafone, Ericsson, Huawei, Intel, Keysight, MediaTek, Nokia, Qualcomm, Rohde & Schwarz, ZTE, Datang jointly declared a statement promoting unified, global 5G standards achieved through 5G testing, trials and cooperation between telecom operators, vendors and vertical industry partners to build a unified end-to-end (E2E) ecosystem.
At the Global 5G Test Summit, hosted by four leading telecom operators and supported by ITU, GSMA, 3GPP, NGMN and GTI, all participants declared their commitment to the promotion of unified global 5G standards, a unified E2E ecosystem and a thriving 5G market. After standardization, testing and trials are vital to the success of 5G technologies, ecosystem development and cross-industry innovation. To achieve this goal, all participants committed to facilitating and ensuring a unified, high-quality and competitive 3GPP 5G specification by June 2018 for release 15 and December 2019 for release 16, building a unified 5G E2E ecosystem (including chipset, terminal, network, test instrument, etc.) for seamless global roaming, and enlarging the global market scale for low cost.
Participants are starting the early trial and interoperability testing for a variety of use cases, including mobile broadband, for 3GPP Release 15 specifications to drive a mature 5G ecosystem and to ensure a quick and efficient time to market. They also appealed to inspire innovations on 5G key technology and to validate the smooth evolution capability of technologies towards 5G, including 3D-MIMO LTE, NB-IoT/eMTC, and C-V2X.
Mr. Liu Aili, EVP of China Mobile said “To achieve the large-scale commercialization of 5G in 2020, China Mobile will strengthen cooperation with global industry partners to facilitate a unified and high-quality 3GPP 5G specification, accelerate the maturity of 5G industry through testing and trials, and explore new services, applications and business models with vertical industry partners for a unified 5G ecosystem through China Mobile 5G Innovation Center.”

Aurels adventure 18th feb 2017 malin kundang play
So its that time again when the school's annual play is held. This time it retells the tale of Malin Kundang. The ones in my grade who are part of the main cast are: Winston and Tara as Mr and Mrs Zhang respectively, Subhan as Mr Sharma and Daffa as Langlang Buana. Another significant main cast is Amira (Gr8 at the time this was written) as Xiao Ling aka Taras daughter.
We the grade 10s (once again at the time this was written) are dancing the indian dance with ms mala aarti asha as the choreographers. The song we used is called Kala Chashma which means sunglasses and is a certified BOP. The outfits i used were different from that of some girls. I had a multicolored crop top which i used over a black tanktop, a red bellydance belt completed with little coins that made noise when i moved and gold aladdin pants. Some other girls wore a red tunic with a multicolored vest over it, the same bellydance as well as the same genie pants. We got a gold bow to wrap around our ponytails as well as bangles. The boys on the otherhand wore yellow tops paired with a bright orange vest and black pants. They got gold belts and head gear.
The show was held in Usmar Ismail beside Pasar Festival and because the red car is in the bengkel and the white is being used i had to go back and forth using a gojek.
I arrived there at 830ish just as a run-through for the dance was about to start. After doing our dance we got called backstage where we were given snacks in the form of chicken and or beef bakpaos. We then had to wait for the grand rehearsal to begin and for it to reach our part. After that we got lunch in the form of a rice box set. It contained ayam opor? , capcai and something else maybe? I cant quite recall. From then on its just waiting for the clock to tick closer to six o'clock so we could get it overwith. So whilst waiting, the cramped waiting room was filled with a mass of bodies sat around in circles or just an abundant mess with some playing games others singing and the rest asleep. I myself was tucked away in a corner, leaning against a pile of clothes with gaby as there was no space with the rest of our gang. We were tangled in each other whilst watching bypassers with familiar faces.
Then suddenly, our grade and our grade only was asked to redo the practice to try a different entrance. Before we practiced however, we got a glimpse of the teachers dancing the plate dance meaning i saw ms mala aarti asha dancing it was amazing. Lao shi bona was also dancing. So it was time for us to try the new entrance. As i was walking up the stairs, several grade 12 ipas or 11 internationals who werent performing but instead were there as ushers or make upers or camera men, were sitting in a nice row. They were instrument, no dinner and taras mama. I heard them initially as i went up the steps but i had my sunglasses on thankfully so i didnt have to look them in the eye. More or less instrument was saying, "apa *insert taras mamas name here*, lu suka yg pake baju item? " on repeat.
At first i originally thought, also bcs of my sunglasses, i musnt be the only one in the row with black shirt. But then he also added the part abt jogger pants which i was wearing and i kinda just...?
I mean from his tone i knew it was a joke but aha wtf. I had to refrain from glancing towards their direction and i faltered a little but is all good as we had to get in line. Luckily, i wasnt the only one who heard as gloria did too. so after we were told what to do how to line up what the cue was, we descended the stairs. and the three were sat in a column, all sitting in the aisle seat of 3 consecutive rows and they were holding out their palms for people to high five. originally, i thought oh, alyssa is infront of me, they’re just going to high five her, but as i halfway passed instrument, he didn’t take back his hand, so i just gave him a mini high five at the tips of his fingers, same like the other two.
another thing that happened after the last practice was that i was storming over to ms aarti to get my pizza as i was super hungry and i had thought that someone took my portion instead. so as i got my pizza and was finding a seat i wasnt looking properly at where i was going (in my defence it was a chaotic mESS) i accidentally softly stepped on um ******’s foot. i said sorry like 5x and he was all its alright no prob. i told these two stories to gloria, tara and rachel (the first to glo and tara the second to rachel) and safe to say they all had the same reaction towards it. i just laughed.
i however, was having a moment of my own....with...SURYA KW. aAHAHAHAH. but we’ll get to that later. so we put on our costumes and our makeups, and oh god this was the best and worst part ever. best part being that it was the three fav teachers who were doing our makeup, the worst being the makeup it self. or the application. or both. where to start??? 1. the powder was at least a shade brighter than my skin tone 2. the lipstick was blood red and it was applied so SO sloppily 3. the eyeliner oh mygod. the top liner was covering half of my lid with most of it covered by the eye shadow. the bottom liner, instead of on the waterline, was outside ?? 4. one eyebrow was shorter than the other all in all, i looked like a ondel ondel.
so me and a bunch of the other girls (basically the bebeks) wiped away at the imperfections and fixed it ourselves with the LG’s makeup. bLESS THEM. and i asked ms mala to fix my brows and she actually made it a lot better bless her soul.
and yet another interaction happened. this time the girls were all cooling off in the auditorium and taking selfies. so cath asked, ‘kita pake kacamata ga??’ at the right time, chicken was descending the stairs and he just shouted, ‘pake’ HAhaha
oK BACK TO SURYA kw. The play finally started and the waiting room just got too packed too sickening to bear so Gaby and I snuck off to the main cast’s waiting room. There we hung out with Tara in both the girls and mens dressing room. see this was the fun. from this experience, i can tell surya kw likes to walk around. everytime im going somewhere, well not EVERYTIME, but most of the time, i see him. whether it be to the toilet, or back or just elsewhere, he’s always THERE. so yeah there was a LOOOT of surya kw that day. basically one of the better things that happened.
*also someone’s DEG moment with surya KW AHAHA* as the play was progressing, our turn came closer and closer. i was walking back from the main cast’s dressing room to get ready and suddenly there was bintang, indria, kevin and annika there. i immediately made a beeline for them and talked for a while before we were asked to make a line. i was so nervous. i was trying to calm my nerves whilst repeating the steps in my head. throughout the entire dance i just heard the three teachers’ voices in my head saying BOUNCE, or SMILE. at one point, i thought my glasses were gonna drop and that was it im dead its gonna break and im gone, but it did not. i was so relieved. so yes fast forward, the play ended etc etc. and i stayed back in the waiting room for a while with bintang indria maxi n daffa. we took several pics too before i left. one thing i left out i kinda saw **** ******* topless???
