In an ideal world, DJenks could build on Luciusâs poly ideas in âwe donât own each other.â and Stede and Izzyâs (super limited) abilities to compromise with each other (via hostages) and they could both be with Ed and everyone in the love triangle is happy, but that seems super delusional at this point, even if itâd be so cool. So, what do you think a realistic happy ending for Izzy would look like?
I think I pulled up a link I wanted to include to answer this like a day or two after it was sent, and then I promptly got distracted and didn't actually type anything. Oops.
Anyway... happy endings.
So here's a post where I kinda speculated on this before that's worth reading. It brings up some tropes that I think are in the mix of possibilities and how I personally feel about them.
For an answer to your question... The way I kind of see the "compromise" situation coming out of S1 is that all the characters are falling on a sliding scale between two not-ideal extremes of piracy philosophy. One end has Izzy firmly planted as the extreme of Edward's default approach - iron fist, emotionally closed off, total focus on skill and discipline, ruling things through a balance of fear and awe that makes them really good at piracy but emotionally and interpersonally a disaster. The other end is probably Lucius as the extreme of Stede's approach - all focus on interpersonal relationships and emotional fulfillment, wanting to have fun and do no work, flaunting hierarchy, and generally failing piracy in favor of self expression.
(Note it's important that Edward and Stede can't truly hit their extremes - Edward is too seeking of attachment and frivolity even as he bristles at vulnerability, and Stede is too emotionally locked up like a clam to practice what he preaches and now has no money to fund a permanent enforced vacation. They don't really want what they perceive as their culture goal, which is good because both their goals kind of suck in different ways. The Kraken is doomed to collapse because it's further out than Izzy.)
The whole crew, Izzy included, needs to make their way toward the midpoint (which, given this is a romcom, is probably not a true middle but skewed a bit toward Stede and silly hijinks) in order to be successful AND emotionally fulfilled. And I think they can do it!
Like Stede's whole vacation boat and enforcing his own unskilled, atypical piracy in the early eps has already caused friction with his crew. They want to be badasses, face challenges, complete raids, etc. The fact they've grown to like him doesn't mean they've decided Stede's hobbies are better than theirs now, it just means they are more open to doing something silly with him and enjoying it than they were in 1x01. I don't think the show is going to end with "retirement" because I don't think any of the characters really want to retire (including bored-as-hell Edward). And if they are still being pirates - in fact, trying to be good pirates - then it's not unrealistic to think Izzy can chill out a bit via character development and get in on the fun.
This is a guy who met Stede and sliced his shirt up as a hello, and then did literally everything he did in 1x06. He's not an inherent buzzkill of a person lol. He's just stressed.
Izzy and Edward working out their shit is probably going to be a extended part of Edward's general character arc, but once they get through that I feel like Izzy's happy ending will be just moving from lurking on the stairs to being in the circle. Give the man a friend, a knife game, probably a boyfriend for the middle aged love parallels... and throw in a real, much scarier antagonist for S3 just to cement him on the Revenge side (*crossing fingers* please be Hornigold).
He'll do just fine.
#our flag means death#izzy hands ofmd#i'm basically thinking his arc is going to look like villain decay except he's not starting out as enough of a villain for it#like none of them are viewing him as a threat to start with so they don't have to shuffle him into the 'not a threat' category#as soon as he resolves his shit with edward though then his reasons for conflict with the rest of them kinda go away#and i think it's kinda ridiculous when people act like the crew is gonna have a major grudge against *izzy* for mostly edward's actions#ask#ladyluscinia

Okay but in all seriousness the writing of season two is perfect to portray exactly who Ed and Stede are and who theyâve always been. If David Jenkins had said âfuck itâ and given them a happy ending right away it wouldâve been magic, but so false. Stede and Ed arenât perfect like that so a perfect and easy ending isnât correct for them.
Theyâre going through another break up over the pettiest of shit (I mean a fish for fuck sake) but thatâs exactly what Stede and Ed would do. Because we all know itâs not actually about a fish. As Ed was running away he said âfishermen and pirates are nothing alikeâ which just surfaces a whole bunch of new things they need to talk through. Because in that scenario Stede is the pirate and Ed is the fisherman, a complete 180 to season oneâs dilema where Edâs the pirate and Stede an Aristocrat. Stede knows itâs not the real reason heâs leaving because he even yells âitâs not about thatâ to which Ed yells back âitâs everything about that! Itâs everything about fishing!â yet thereâs no reason it would be. Ed is making up an excuse because heâs afraid. He kept repeating how he wanted to take things slow yet (like he mentions) everything has been doing the exact opposite. They had sex but I donât just mean that. Stede also was very close to confessing his love for him, which to Edward Iâm sure would be a huge deal as no one has probably ever loved him truly and purely before in that way. And Iâm not being funny but especially a man. Ed killed his own Father and as far as we know the only person to have loved him (besides like ig Izzy) is his Mother. So it may be difficult for him to accept love especially from another man because he never received it growing up. The entire episode âman on fireâ also highlights exactly how truly whim-prone Ed and especially Stede are. It doesnât take much for Stede to get swept away by praises from his fans, enough so he even gets his ear pierced. And Ed deciding to become a fisherman from catching one fish is really⊠the best example.
Even in âCalypsoâs birthdayâ when Ned calls Stede Edâs âpetâ it brings about these doubts Stede could have about Edâs true feelings for him that, paired with âMan on fireâ, is fucking incredible. Because right after Stede has been told that his boyfriend only likes him because âof his bumbling amateur statusâ he changes completely, kills two men (Ned and the man on fire), has gay sex for the first time, gets his ear pierced and a bunch of people start to get tattoos of him on their bodies. These doubts need resolving though but instead of talking it out, of course his initial response is to bottle it/have sex⊠though it isnât like he was given much of a chance to bring it up to talk about it because Ed ran away (a response that is so fucking accurate to both of them as characters).
Iâd just like to point out that I love the detail of Stede always preaching for everybody to âtalk it through as a crewâ yet I swear he has never practised what he preaches. This man running away back to Mary instead of talking his feeling out but telling the crew to share their thoughts is one of the most realistic thing about his character.
No one can say this show has bad writing. The inevitable conflict was hinted at so many times throughout the season. Ed and Stede couldâve never stayed happy as soon as they met up in âFun and gamesâ because Stede still hadnât met his goal of being a known pirate (his whole goal from season one) plus he literally ran away from having a normal life so of course he wasnât going to give up the seas quite yet while Ed has been so clearly saying heâs done with pirating for a long time. The entire persona of âJeffâ is the only evidence we need. He wants a normal life, not as Blackbeard but as âEdward Teach born on a beachâ or as âJeffâ - the innkeeper or accountant. Itâs impossible not to pick up on this. Even the line âyou wear fine things wellâ is just this idea incarnate. They both say it to each other on severed occasions, it being a complement showing their adoration for one another. When Ed tells Stede those words itâs a comedic moment because heâs relaying Stedeâs words, itâs sweet because they kiss and itâs such an obvious thing to say because Stede is (as he put it in âa gentleman pirateâ) landed gentry so of course it suits him. Yet when Edâs being told he looks good in nice things itâs the best thing someone has ever told him, because Stede looks past him being a pirate and a murderer and says âhey, that suits youâ. No one has ever seen him as someone worth anything more so he feels seen more then he ever has before. That one line is so powerful and thatâs probably why itâs repeated in season 2; because it feels like proof they will end up back together again.
They donât understand their own feelings half the time, theyâre whim-prone and theyâre very good at running away, however they see one another for who they are and so far have always found their way back to each other.
