Would you consider doing a gif tutorial? You’re my absolute favorite blog and I love your gifs so much.

first of all, thank you so much! i didn’t know i could be anyone’s favourite blog? i’m literally asjdjdkjdhfjkl right now :’)) 💖

second of all, i suck at describing things (i maybe overcomplicate things and go in too deep on some things (mostly bc i’m a passionate gif maker lmao)), but i did my best to make a good gif tutorial.

i didn’t know how deep i was gonna go into this, but i’ll show how to download a video, import it into photoshop, to sharpen it and there’s two basic psds included, that i’ll show how i apply to my gifs and i’ll also show how i save my gifs :’) i know gifs can be done in a bit different ways, but this is basically how i make them.

i apologise on forehand for any mistakes, i slept 3 hours last night but i really wanted to finish this today!

downloading the video

firstly, i download the video from clipconverter.cc, and then i usually cut out the part i want in quicktime player. but there’s an option on clipconverter to just download one certain part of a video, instead of the whole video, which i chose to show here instead.

i always choose the highest quality, which is always the first option on the site, then mp4 and then there’s an option to either download all of the video or just a part of it. for this tutorial i chose to untick the boxes and type in the minutes+seconds i wanted to download. then it’s just to hit start, wait for it to process the video. once the video is processed, just hit download!

importing

to import the video, just go to file > import > video frames to layers… and then find the video where you saved it and click “open”.

then this box will pop up

and you just hit “ok”.

size

to resize the gif to the size i want, i use the crop tool on the left, choose w x h x resolution. there’s different sizes for different types of gifsets, but for this one i’m doing a big one, so on the top and write 540px and 300px, then hit the lil tick on the right.

converting to timeline and smart filters

what i do next, is that i select all frames in the timeline at the bottom of the screen (click the first frame, scroll to the last one and shift+click), and do the same to all the layers on the right. then i click the little button in the bottom left corner of the timeline window, the one that says “convert to video timeline”.

then i go to filter > convert for smart filters. this now gives me a timeline to work on, where i can sharpen my gif, and where i will .

sharpening

to sharpen the gif, just go to filter > sharpen > sharpen

if you think the gif is too sharp, you can change it in the layers section by double-clicking the button i’ve marked above. there you can change the opacity, meaning how sharp you want your gif to be. i usually go for 100%, but if you want it to be softer you can change it!

colouring

colouring is by far the most fun in my opinion! i basically made myself a basic psd a few months back (because i’m lazy), that i now use for most gifsets i make. it’s a very basic one, where i’ve used some layers to lighten up the gif, made it more vibrant and made some basic skin colours (red and yellow) stand out just a bit more.

so, i use the same psd every time i gif, but what i do is that i change the colours a bit. because every video (or episode of a tv show or whatever you’re giffing) is different, so i always need to tweak the ‘selective color’ layers a bit.

and this is how it looks like with some changes in the base psd. i made some colours stand out or “pop” more than others (in this particular gifset it’s the cyan/blue) in this one, because i thought it looked nicer than with just what i had in the psd.

how to apply a psd

what i do first, is that i drag both documents out of the “frame”

so they go like this:

then i click the one called “fondestphanbase.psd”, and to the right in the “layers”, there’s a folder called “group 1″ that i drag onto the one i have called “test”.

cutting the gif

right now, my gif is waaay too long/big for tumblr to accept it - it needs to be under 3mb. so the last thing i do before saving it, is to cut it.

i use the arrows that’s on the timeline at the bottom of photoshop to adjust the length of the gif. there’s a play button to the left of the timeline, so you can preview how it looks.

saving the gif

hopefully your gif is under 3mb, once you’re done cutting it down. if it’s not, you’ll have to cut it down just a little bit more until it’s under 3mb.

the way i save it is a bit complicated, because of how i gif in the “timeline” mode. it’s basically saving twice, unless you like the gif to go a bit faster, which i personally don’t like.

to save your gif, go to file > export > save for web

and this window will pop up:

there’s some gif settings you can change, and everyone prefers differently. you can change things at the top right corner. personally, i use “selective” + “pattern” for my gifs, because in my eyes that looks the nicest.

in the bottom left corner you can see how big your gif is. mine is 1.691mb.

also make sure the looping options at the bottom right is set to “forever”, or else the gif will only play once.

and now you just hit save, give your gif a name and save it wherever you like on your computer!

now, it will look like this

which i don’t like, as it’s moving a bit too fast for my liking.

that’s why i open the gif in photoshop again, by going to file > open…

and then i select all frames in the timeline, just like i did at the start of this.

then i click one of those little arrows that are in each frame, and click “other…”

this little window will come up! it currently says 0,03, which i usually change to 0,05, but you can make it even slower if that’s how you want your gif. 0,05 usually feels okay for me, so i click “ok”.

now you can save your gif once again, just like before (and make sure the settings are alright) and it’s done :D

so this is basically how i do my gifs! i hope this made some kind of sense? and i hope this tutorial wasn’t too overwhelming or anything, and i hope i didn’t complicate things more than necessary.

It was roughly three o’clock in the morning when Jeremy broke into his ex-boyfriend’s apartment with only his sniper rifle and a backpack full of red bull.

The block his ex lived in was nice. A tall white building on the outskirts of this hellish city, with petite bushes surrounding the entrance and park benches decorating the front lawn. It was inconspicuous, quaint; the kind of place that only elderly people and young parents would live in.

As such, it was perfect for one of the most infamous criminals in Los Santos.

Gavin Free, also known as the Golden Boy or Vav or anything else he felt like calling himself, was the epitome of danger. He only cared about money and glitz and manipulation. It was what he fed on, essentially. And he was good. A pretty face spinning pretty lies like cobwebs in an abandoned warehouse. Hacking and twisting people’s minds was his forte, but he was more of a jack of all trades. It suited him. People like him were not meant for average lives or to pass away peacefully at ninety in their sleep. They lived vicariously and uproariously and always died young.

When Jeremy had first met Gavin five years ago, he had recognised this in him immediately, accompanied by a darkness. A willingness to do nearly anything to achieve what he wanted. He was more moral than some, but it was still evident in his reckless nature and wickedly sharp grin.

Jeremy had fallen in love with him anyway. Of course he had. He was young and naive and Gavin had been golden, a shining beacon in the coldness of an unfamiliar city. They had been good together for three whole years; balancing one another out, laughing about everything and anything. Running free throughout the streets of this place which couldn’t care less if they were to evaporate tomorrow.

And then, Gavin had to get himself almost killed and something deep inside of Jeremy snapped.

His mind was a mess - a labyrinth of repressed trauma and smothered anger and undiluted fear that controlled his every waking moment. So he started distancing himself from Gavin, saying that he just had a lot of jobs or deals or anything that would lead to him not having to deal with him for one more night. Finally Jeremy had to break up with him.

At first, Gavin had no physical reaction to the words pouring out of Jeremy’s mouth. He just stared, one hand clenched around the armrest of their couch. After Jeremy had finished with his spiel, Gavin refused to look at him. He simply nodded, emotionless, and asked if he should start packing his things. When Jeremy replied that he was the one actually moving out, Gavin shrugged and said of course. The silence was deafening, choking Jeremy with its intensity and he felt more remorse in that moment than he had ever experienced in his life before.

What worried him most was that Gavin never reacted. He hadn’t said anything, simply disappeared into thin air. No one could pull a vanishing act like the Golden Boy.

The silence hurt. His heart hurt. So he did the only thing he knew how to do properly: ignore the situation entirely. Not healthy, sure, but since when did Jeremy do himself any favours? He had been the one to do this and he would be the one to deal with the aftermath.

And so Jeremy carried on. He cut all ties with the crew who had nearly gotten Gavin killed, ignored the news articles with the Golden Boy’s latest conquests splashed on the front page, turned away from the whispers and rumours of Los Santos’ most valuable export. He made himself useful by taking small jobs from medium sized gangs that involved anything from hefty muscle work to quiet sniper shots in the dead of  night.

It wasn’t much, but it kept his mind busy. Before he knew it, two years had flown by and he was somewhat well known in this thankless city for his skills. It was all fine. He could cope with this.

That was, of course, until this stupid job which paid a ridiculous amount of money came around. The crew was up and coming, and they wanted an outspoken opponent of theirs dead. Fair enough, really. It was what was involved in this process that drove Jeremy up the wall.

His target lived opposite Gavin’s flat. This nice suburban area with its petite bushes and cute park benches and harmless neighbours who had probably done nothing wrong in their entire lives.

Logically, he knew that the best option he had if he wanted the money was to get him while he was in his apartment, but the crew wanted a discreet, clean job - which meant pulling his sniper rifle out.

And of course, of course, because the universe just loved to fuck with Jeremy, Gavin’s flat was directly opposite his target’s.

He wondered if the fall from the top of the block would kill him, quickly rationalised that the only thing it would succeed in doing was hurt and got back to work.

So here he was, sleep deprived and grumpy, setting up his gun in his ex’s flat. He hated everything.

It was a nice place. Jeremy tried his best not to get distracted by all of Gavin’s trinkets, but he couldn’t help himself. It was all so… Gavin. A solid wooden table in the middle of the room with the ugliest carpet he had ever seen beneath it, framed posters of retro video games hanging on the walls, tiny statues of cats lining the fireplace - everything in this room was tainted with his personality. With memories.

Jeremy remembered a time where they had to replace their brand new glass table because Gavin had accidentally smashed it after one too many beers. He remembered going to flea markets and picking up miniature statues which they would give funny names to. Lazy mornings making coffee and dancing together in their socks. Not having a care in the world aside from one another.

Those days were dead, now. Jeremy had a job to do.

He finished setting his rifle up, settling himself in for a long night. Morning. Whatever. He unzipped his bag and pulled a can out, sighing to himself as he tried to calm his racing thoughts. He had to focus.

Thirty minutes passed without any sight of his target in the flat opposite. Then an hour. Then two.

Jeremy was starting to wonder if his intel was dodgy because he’d been told that this guy would absolutely be in his flat at this time. He stayed anyway because he had nothing better to do and Gavin wouldn’t be back for another week.

And then he heard the front door open, key clicking in the lock and boots thumping on the floor, before shutting the door and snapping Jeremy out of his thoughts.

And then Gavin entered the living room, spotted a familiar looking man crouched over a sniper rifle pointing out of his window, and pulled a gun on him.

And then Jeremy turned around to see the muzzle pointed at his face and practically shat himself.

The most awful, soul-crushing quiet passed between the two as Jeremy stared at Gavin in disbelief. He looked awful. Messy hair which looked like it hadn’t been brushed in days, purple stains printed underneath tired eyes, rumpled clothing. Shaking hands.

“What are you doing here, Jeremy.”

With that, Gavin lowered his gun and sat down on the couch behind him, cradling his head in his hands. Jeremy remained rooted to his spot on the ground, arms outstretched behind him, still looking at the other man in shock. He shook himself and sat up properly, not quite meeting Gavin’s eyes.

“I - uh - shit, this shouldn’t have happened. My intel told me that you wouldn’t be back for another week because of a job you were on. Gavin I’m so -”

He was cut off by Gavin, who waved a hand at him impatiently.  “Well the job went bloody tits up so I got to come home a few hours early. There’s your pissing intel.”

He didn’t sound angry. Jeremy expected angry. He could deal with angry. What Gavin was, though, was exhausted. It was evident in the way he carried himself; his tone, the look in his eyes. It broke Jeremy’s heart and he hadn’t known what to do.

“What are you even doing here?” Gavin asked, curiosity evident in his voice. “And why is there a rifle sticking out of my window at my very nice neighbour’s flat?”

Jeremy laughed and nervously ran a hand through his hair. “Oh, uh, it’s a job. Your neighbour has made some pretty powerful enemies by being an A class fuckhole, apparently. I’m just the sucker who’s getting paid for this.”

“I don’t think that makes you a sucker. That makes you good at what you do.”

Gavin’s words hit Jeremy in the stomach and he looked away from him as he tried to keep his breathing under control. Why was he so damn sweet? This was gonna kill Jeremy. Here lies Jeremy Dooley, too gay for his ex boyfriend. Fucking perfect.

He nodded, still focusing on Gavin’s ugly ass carpet. It was 5.30 now, and Jeremy could feel how tired he was. Sleep deprivation was not his friend. It wasn’t Gavin’s either, judging by the way he couldn’t seem to stop yawning as he rubbed his temple in a circular motion.

Suddenly, Jeremy couldn’t bear to deal with this anymore.

“Do you want me to go?” He said, a heaviness creeping into his bones. “I know I’m probably the last person you want to see right now - or, ever, really.”

Gavin stared at him. Straight into his eyes, practically peering into his pitch black soul. Jeremy felt the need to meet his gaze.

He relented after a moment and Gavin groaned into his hands.

“I don’t - I don’t hate you, Jeremy.” He mumbled, rubbing his left hand up and down his other arm. “I know why you did what you did, and it’s been years now. I’m okay.”

Jeremy shifted his position on the floor so that he could hug his knees to his chest and rest his chin on top of his knees. “I didn’t mean to hurt you. I was just… Scared, I guess. We were so young. You - you almost died.”  His voice broke slightly on the last word, and he swallowed his regret.

Gavin nodded, sighing to himself. “That was really stupid of me. Thoughtless. I should have listened to you. I’m sorry.”

“That’s not all. You just - you didn’t react. You didn’t say anything. You let me pack my bags and leave and you didn’t say a word.”

“I didn’t know what to do.”

There was a sudden rawness present in Gavin that Jeremy had never seen before. A catastrophic vulnerability. His broken pieces were scattered on the floor, cutting anyone who dared get too close to him, and Jeremy didn’t know how to fix this or if he even could.

Gavin carried on, clearing his throat. “I was stupid and reckless. And that hurt you. I never really apologised for that so… I’m sorry. I really am.”

He stood then, taking a step toward Jeremy before hesitating. Jeremy smiled, inclining his head so that Gavin knew that he could sit down in front of him.

When he had made himself comfortable on the floor, he was so close that his hands had brushed Jeremy’s legs as he had sat down and Jeremy could feel his heart pounding in his chest. He was going to die. This was the end.

Jeremy shook his head, uncurling himself so that he could talk to Gavin more openly. “I’m sorry, too,” he’d said quietly. “I should’ve given you a better explanation. I was kinda a mess.

Gavin snorted, moving his hand to cover his mouth as he grinned. Jeremy found himself unconsciously pushing Gavin’s offending hand away so that he could see his smile. Gavin blushed and Jeremy could feel his own cheeks grow warm as well.

They sat like that for what seemed like forever, knees knocking against each other until the wail of Jeremy’s ring tone broke the peace that had fallen. Jeremy cringed and pulled his phone out of his pocket, before groaning loudly at the number on the screen.

“Is that your employers?”

“Yeah,” Jeremy sighed, rubbing his palm over his eyes. “Probably wondering why I haven’t updated them in a while.”

“Well,” Gavin smirked roguishly, “just tell them you had a few unforeseen circumstances.”

Jeremy rolled his eyes and allowed a small huff to leave his mouth. “I’ll tell them to give me better intel. The guy wasn’t even in his apartment.”

“Oh yeah. He’s on holiday. Should be back next week.”

“What?” Jeremy’s eyes opened wide as his jaw essentially hit the floor. “Oh my god. Oh, holy shit.”

Gavin tilted his head at Jeremy’s outburst, looking slightly concerned.

“The intel was mixed up.” Jeremy clarified. “You were the one coming back from your trip today and he’s the dude who’s away. Oh my god.”

He was met with an incredulous look, before Gavin begun to howl with laughter. Full body, clutching his stomach laughter which resounded throughout the entire room. A joyful sound that Jeremy hadn’t heard in so long that it made him start laughing, too.

They cackled for a bit, huffing out small breaths and smiling at each other. Jeremy’s phone pinged again, and he grunted as he sent a text off explaining the situation and that he’d be back next week to finish the job. The crew wouldn’t be happy, sure, but that wasn’t his fault.

“I’m gonna make some breakfast.” Gavin said, pushing himself off the ground and holding out a hand to help Jeremy up.

He took it without hesitation.

“Do you have any coffee?”

“Yes, Jeremy, who do you think I am?”

Jeremy knew they still had more to talk about and things to work through, but for now, it was enough having Gavin back in his life. It’d be worth the effort. It was Gavin. Of course it would be.

Research - Character rigging, Redline process, space and spaceships

This research post will cover how character rigging is done from start to finish, plus the animation process of the anime Redline, alongside what I know about space. This will include research about Autodesk Mudbox, my first thoughts on the software, and the tedious export process.

Autodesk Mudbox

Autodesk Mudbox is a 3D sculpt and paint software. It is used to build 3D models digitally that can then be exported and used in either live-action movies, 3D games, or just for show. Mudbox is a tricky software from my point of view, but once you learn all of the controls and tools, it is easy to use.

The export process, however, is another story. Depending on what you want to do with the model, you have to choose certain options within the process to make it work with whatever you’re putting it into (Cinema4D, for instance).

First, you must go to UVs and Maps > Extract Texture Maps > New Operation. Then you have to choose the appropriate settings in Maps To Generate: Transfer Paint Layers, Ambient Occlusion Map, Vector Displacement Map, Displacement Map and Normal Map. You CAN choose more than one and less than five, but I don’t recommend trying it unless you know what you’re doing. 

The next step is to choose the part to export, such as your full model under the name of “Basic” or even “mr wishy washy”. And at the bottom of the menu is a filename field. Click that and choose where to export it. If you don’t, it may export in the Mudbox directory or somewhere else you don’t want something like that to be.

Do that for all of the parts you have and you are done. Just locate it and pray to God that it works perfectly with whatever you do next. I have had a lot of trial and error with this complicated process, so... get a Mudbox pro if you need help, as I cannot help you with your issues.

My first thoughts on Mudbox - The only part I don’t like is the export process. It is too difficult for me to understand or even get started on without following a very long tutorial, which I’m not capable of doing in all honesty. Everything else is alright.

What do I do with this model texture I have?

What I did next was move to Cinema4D. Unless you know how to make a full human skeleton in Cinema4D by yourself (it is tedious and complicated, not something you can learn in a day), go to Mixamo, which is a modelling site that even allows you to animate your character in just the click of one button.

You can find different models of different characters on here, so the possibilities with your model are endless.

Once you find the animation/model you want, you can download it and use it in Cinema4D. I’m not sure if it works within any other 3D software such as Blender. Prove me otherwise.

Redline Animation Process + Review

Redline is a feature-length manga animation (1 hour and 42 minutes) that involves the plot of a racer willing to win the final, but is being stopped by a cyborg. The reason why I’m explaining the process of this animation instead of a full-on review of the film (which I will get into after this process) is because of the amount of time it took to make the film - seven years! If you remember my post about Cuphead, you’re probably familiar with that long length of time. The reason why it took so long is because of all of the detail required to make such an animation with a length like that (average of 25 frames per second, multiplied by 6,120 seconds = 153,000 drawn frames!):

Some scenes re-use some frames (like when the character talks or if the car is passing multiple objects of the same kind) in one particular shot or many shots of the same frame). An example of this is very frequent throughout Yu-Gi-Oh (which is also a manga).

Just watch their mouths:

In my opinion, this is rather lazy, but it saves a lot of time, resources and money. Imagine if every frame in Redline had to be completely unique (no two frames would be the same), it would take well over seven years and 3 billion yen to make if that were the case.

Because Redline is a Japanese film, it may not seem very expensive as 3 billion yen is around £23.3 million, but think about that for a second. Would you spend 3 billion of whatever currency you have, to make a 104-minute manga? Personally, I wouldn’t unless I know it will be a film that everyone would like.

Onto the Redline film review (even though we weren’t told to do one but hey, who is going to stop me?):

This was the best animation I have ever seen in my life. However, there were some traits in the film that kind of weirded me out a bit. It may be weird, but what animation isn’t? How it’s weird is the fact that this animation contains a fair bit of blood, nudity and swearing, but I honestly don’t care for that. But some of my favourite scenes are the crash scene (how the racer crashes his car at 200+ MPH and is still alive somehow to drag on the movie) and the final race scene, especially the part where they’re neck and neck and it is a death wish to reach the finish. All of the time and effort that went into this film is what makes it worth the wait for. The plot and storyline really gives you enough tension to keep you on the edge of your seat during the climax of the film. All of the detail, the filters and how everything clashes together makes it a film worth watching. If you're not a fan of nudity, blood, super cars, or tragedy in general I do not recommend this film. Nonetheless, I really enjoyed watching it. It somehow reminds me of Wacky Races, which is an old-time cartoon based around these very comedic and edgy races. Would I recommend this to a friend? I probably would tell them about the film first before I did so, but if they are into the genre of racing, I would do.

Finally, Space!

Not just space in the room, OUTER space. Outer space is what lies outside the Earth, around 62 miles up from ground level. The observable universe that we can see is 93 billion light-years wide, while outer space goes on forever.

So far, humans have only managed to reach the Moon and no further. The Moon itself is around 250,000 miles away from Earth, and only 12 people have ever made it there and back. While other spacecraft had tried to land on other planets in the Solar System such as Jupiter, nobody has ever been out further than the Moon.

Outer space, or in the very least, our observable universe contains two trillion galaxies, which altogether contain more stars than there are grains of sand all over Earth.

Each individual star has a life, just like us humans. Stars are born from dust and gas, which then evolve into their main form for about 3-7 billion years while it burns all of it’s gases to it’s own core, after which it will collapse on itself, turning into either a white dwarf star or a black hole in the process. Our Sun, is one such star. It is around 5 billion years old, and in about 7 billion years time, it will die too, which will destroy Mercury, Venus and most likely Earth with it. Long before then, it’s habitable zone (or Goldilocks region) will move further outwards into the Solar System, potentially allowing life on Mars, so life on Earth could flee to Mars to escape the cataclysmic event.

So far, we have not found another life-form that lives off of water or anything us humans need to survive. Those there are theories and speculations that there may be “aliens” outside of our Solar System. One of such system is the Proxima Centauri star system, which is just over 4 light-years away from us. Since it is too far away for us to humanly reach in spacecraft, even if it could go at the speed of light (it would take 4 years in this case), there is only one plan to get to the area, which is to send 1,000 sail-spacecraft called StarChip at 15-20% the speed of light towards the system using a laser to get them going.

The reason why 1,000 are going at once is because of the extreme speed they’ll be going at, which is so fast that if it even comes into contact with a spec of dust, it will INSTANTLY get destroyed. So if multiple get destroyed, at least a couple hundred will make it. When they do, the craft will take photographs of the star system and it will take a few years to get back to Earth.

Speaking of spaceships, there is unique spacecraft in both the game and movie industry. This example is Liset from Warframe. It is the military home ship of the player, who goes to different planets to either extract data from the enemy base, capture an enemy, or to straight up kill the leader of an enemy gang.

It is a military spaceship because it is home to a being who is willing to wipe out life on another planet and claim whatever treasures lay on said planet. Another example is the spaceship of the bad guys in Elysium:

It may not look intimidating, but the entities inside the ship certainly are.

What do I like about everything shown in this post? Well, see my Redline review for my thoughts on Redline. As for everything else, it really fascinates me as I like science-fiction based stuff, because it raises a lot of speculation for scientists, and even me, about what lies outside of our planet and even this universe. Do we live in a multiverse? Is the universe much bigger than we thought? For now, it looks like we may never know unless we have trillions of years to spare...

Tough Drives Explained

The advent of computer systems has changed a bit of everything in our every day lives.
