Penelope & Colin Bridgerton: The Exploration of a Relationship Between an ENFP & INFP

I did Kate and Anthony long ago, before season 3 came out, and now a lot of you wanted Penelope and Colin (plus it won a poll). Not going to lie, this was a little bit different, because ENFP & INFP have the same cognitive functions, and are more similar in function order, as opposed to an INTJ & ESFP, but it was fun nonetheless!

Two Fi & Ne users

Since the beginning of the show, it is established that Penelope and Colin have very much in common. Colin writes to Penelope regularly, while Penelope is implied to be one of the few people who genuinely understands him, and the only one interested enough to give a response.

Even before the audience sees Colin’s attraction towards Penelope, we see them regularly engage with each other, Colin specifically seeking Penelope out at social gatherings and Penelope always happy to engage in conversations with him.

Colin, as a Ne user, is the only one who understands the ideas that Penelope has, that others, especially her own family find bizarre, and Penelope, as an Fi user, is able to listen to, and understand Colin’s emotions in ways others might be unable to.

Dominant Fi, Auxiliary Ne vs. Dominant Ne, Auxiliary Fi

Both Penelope and Colin have Ne & Fi, which gives them a lot of common ground, but the order of their stack also affects their relationship and helps to convey their differences.

Penelope is an Fi dom, so her emotions are more so a driving factor towards her decisions than her Ne. Colin is an Ne dom, so his ideas and his exploration of possibilities drives his decisions more than his Fi.

Penelope’s ideas and dreams exist to support her emotions, while Colin’s emotions exist to support his ideas and dreams. This is why Colin is eager to put his dreams into action by traveling the world, while Penelope writes to make sense of herself and her feelings.

However, because of this, both characters are able to push their auxiliary functions to light more. Penelope is able to allow Colin to reflect more on his emotions, and is able to call out when she feels he is pushing them away to create a persona. Colin is able to become a source for her ideas and fantasies by both writing her letters and becoming close to her.

In Conclusion

I think what works so well with their relationship, is that they are so similar, which is reflective with the cognitive functions they have. This is similar to Anthony and Kate, who are also pretty similar as far as typings go (though, in their case, they had the same dominant function and different auxiliary functions).

So, like I said, my name is Raven, and I use they/them pronouns. I'm panromantic and asexual. I am a minor, but I'm not, like, super young (I actually just had my birthday last Saturday). In any case, it is lovely to make your acquaintance, Raven, and you sound like a lovely person! we already have a few common traits - most notably I am also a pink character (like, decidedly pink lol, not a single test has given me a different answer and I quite concur), and a type 4 too, though I take that result with a grain of salt because a lot of 4's are mistyped and I may fall under that category.

How you met: You both have been friends previously, actually being one of the only friends Ai was able to handle being around for long periods of time. Ai enjoyed your company, he was able to learn many human traits and behaviors through your friendship. When Ai was not busy, you both would usually spend your time watching anime together or shopping online, seeing as he has actually become quite addicted ever since you introduced him to it. 

How you got together: Ai had been thinking about the nature of your relationship for awhile. He was curious as to why he always began to heat up when you were around, making sure to look nice before seeing you and also careful not to be so blunt like he would around Reiji. After many hours of staying up late doing research about these unknown feelings, he has concurred he has a crush on you and that the only solutions were to make his feelings known. Basically the next day he was very straightforward with asking you on a date.

First kiss: You were the one to initiate the first kiss, seeing as Ai is very new to human emotions. As you both began to date for awhile, the only intimate gestures given were simple cuddle sessions while watching anime and hand holding. You decided to make the move during one of his favorite movies, waiting for the perfect moment to lean in and kiss him gently on the cheek before turning your attention back to the screen as if nothing happened, only for Ai to process what you had done and heat up immediately.

First “I love you”: He was the one to actually say it. He had to carefully think through this, having to make sure what he was feeling was indeed love. Once he decided, the next time he saw you he simply said he loved you as though he was talking about the weather, although the blush on his cheeks told you otherwise.

All of this, especially with the last point, INFPs are extremely opinionated and judgemental (even though we won't always show it), it's part of the reason we can get into activism, or any other cause that we may become invested in. Added onto the fact that we tend to be very vocal about the things we care about. Fi is a judging function and we are constantly judging everything based on our moral code, does that mean we'll always argue or bring up a fight? No, unless it hits the moral code or values hard we may not like it but we'll let it pass.

Also on the crying thing, you will see an INFP sulk much more than you will ever see them cry.

Is there any way I can make it clear Katherine is INFP canonically?

Things that would help is a Spontaneous and impulsive nature to an extent, not as much as say an extroverted type would have but it's there, decisions would be based on what they feel, this can be anything from food to clothes, which can make the decisions either really fast or long undecisive especially if they can only choose one and they like both equally, or if they don't know what they're looking for. Given to daydreams and deep thoughts that can come out of nowhere, as well as a philosophical nature to one degree or another. Also, they'd be constantly trying to figure themselves out as it's often a lifelong thing for INFPs, not to mention that getting them to talk about their feelings unless they really trust you can be really difficult, and even if they do trust you there is a frustration there that they can't explain it clearly so they blurt out a bunch of examples in the form of metaphors and the like. All added with a whimsical and hopeless romantic nature that they sometimes hide and sometimes don't. Lastly, very strong values that they hold near and dear as well as being either really passionate or really mellow, there is no in between.

Valka--INFP

“Some of us were just born different.”

Valka loves the feeling of being completely free that comes with soaring on the back of a dragon.  She follows her intuition and is very open to possibilities that the majority see as impossible or even ridiculous (Ne).  She has a strong sense of self and of her own values (Fi), and she works very hard to try and outwardly show how what she so strongly believes in can be made possible (Te), such as intervening in the fights with the dragons to save them.  Ultimately, Valka is driven by her heart and makes decision based on feeling; she even says that staying away from her son for so long was done out of thinking it was the best for him and everyone else.  She sometimes finds it hard to believe readily how much old situations and beliefs can change (Si) but is readily welcoming of change.  Valka has great emotional sensitivity (Fi), seeing what her son is struggling through and helping guide him to find his purpose.  She works tirelessly to support a cause she believes in, fearlessly fighting for what she feels to be right in the face of any opponent.

Drago Bludvist--ISTJ

“Dragon master? I alone control the dragons!”

Drago explains to Hiccup that his thirst for power comes from a relentless need to concur the fears of the past and gain revenge.  He is very focused in his endeavors, never straying from what he has always worked for or what is important to him (Si-Fi).  He is unhealthfully over-controlling and unforgiving when things do not go his way, which nevertheless indicates strong, though misused, extraverted thinking).  His inferior Ne (extraverted intuition) is visible in the way that he is completely unopened to new possibilities and unable to change the view he has so admittedly stuck to all of his life.  He doesn’t easily forgive either, and past experiences are quite guiding of his actions and opinions of others.

Eret--ESTP

“They wouldn't know where you're hiding. I promise you that.”

Eret is quite competent in the physical world (Se).  He shows strong Ti in his logical approach to situations.  He doesn’t seem to stick with Drago out of any steadfast loyalty so much as a reason that tells him it’s the best thing to do in the moment.  With extraverted feeling, a logical and emotionally reasonable argument can reach him well, and he’s happy to change sides when he sees it’s the better thing to do, both on a moral and a logical level.

Oh, ha! Excellent. I dithered on whether or I wanted that or INFP for her since she has so much of my voice and my sarcasm and that’s where I fall (accepting, of course, that this is all bullshit pseudoscience). But Guy fit that description on the list I read more. :D
