Valentines Success
Jenna Ortega x Autistic!Male!Reader
Tumblr media
Summary: You and Jenna exchange Valentines gifts
Words: 1162
2nd Person POV
(5 days earlier)
Jenna and You walked down the mall, shopping bags in hand. It was particularly quiet today which made the experience a little more bearable today than what you're regularly accustomed to.
You two soon came to a stop in front of a clothing store Jenna frequents, one of her favourite stores. However, the amount of people in store was quite substantial and you too could get noticed in public, something neither of you minded if they're fans, but today you two just wanted some quiet
You quickly thought of a solution to avoid being spotted by the public, and also maybe because you didn't want to go into the store yourself because of the people. "Hey babe, why don't you go in the store and I'll stay out here. That way it'll be harder for people to spot us since we're not close together" you suggested.
"You sure sweetie?" She says and you reply promptly with a nod and a smile. Jenma gives you a loving kiss on the cheek "I'll only be a couple minutes." She says and walks into the store, leaving you standing in the mall, looking for anything interesting to pass the time.
Not far from the clothing store was the LEGO store, one of your personal favourites. LEGO has been a comfort item for most of your life, and let's be honest, who doesn't love LEGO.
You walked over to the store and entered it, immediately engulfed with childhood nostalgia and familier sights that just make you feel all happy and giddy inside.
You looked at each set and their themes. They had from Star Wars, Spider-Man, Marvel Comics, Batman, DC Comics, Pirates In The Caribbean, Harry Potter; literally endless options, but you were looking for Star Wars.
There was one set you really wanted, the "Ultimate Collectors Series Lego Millennium Falcon" coming in at 7541 pieces overall. It was massive, and you wanted it.
Though, there was a problem, you were broke. You had just bought Jenna a really expensive necklace for her valentines day gift. You don't regret buying it because you know she'll love it, but you can't help but feel a little sorry for yourself over the fact you can't afford to buy a set you REALLY wanted.
You caressed the cardboard box that displayed the sets box art, and the blocky contents in held within its frame. "One day you'll be mine" you whispered to the large box as if it were sentient.
But unbeknownst to you, Jenna was peeking from around the shop entrance out of your view, watching you stare in awe of the gargantuan LEGO ship. She knew right then and there that this was the perfect gift to get you.
"Oh Y/N/N you're in for a surprise" She chuckled to herself mischievously.
Tumblr media
(literally Jenna from around the corner watching you)
-
(Present day)
It was the moment both of them had been waiting for. It was gift giving time. You and Jenna have treated yourselves to a valentines day brunch and just got back home. You were eager for her to recieve her gift, and she felt the same about hers.
You opened the door for her upon entering your house "Why aren't just a gentleman" she said, with a kiss on the lips as reward for your politeness. You went over to the spot where you hid the box that contained the necklace and hid it behind your back.
You walked over to Jenna with a smile on your face. She cocked an eyebrow and smirked knowing you had something behind your back. "Honey, what are you hiding?" You smiled as she waited with eager anticipation.
Taking a deep breath, you began "Jenna, in all my years of living you've given me more joy than I could've ever imagined. You're are the absolute light of my life and today I just wanted to give you something as a token of my undying gratitude." You pulled the box out from behind you and presented it to her.
Jenna gently took the box from your hands and opened it. The jewels from the diamond necklace were almost blinding as they reflected across her skin, her eyes went wide as soon as they set upon them.
Jenna was barely able to contain a squeal of pure joy and excitement, settling for a loud gasp instead. A small note was under where the necklace sat. It read "Happy Valentines day, Jenna. I love you. P.S im broke now becuz of u <3 - your forever person, Y/N"
Jenna laughed upon reading the note and tears dripped down her face, which brought a smile yours knowing you did good with your gift. She held both of your hands "You are the champion of making me happiest person in the world, Y/N L/N. You are the kindest, sweetest and most adorable person I've ever had pleasure of knowing and I'm glad to call you, my lover."
You blushed hard at the comment. The two of you leaned in and shared a loving kiss to commemorate the love you felt for each other, a love that will stand the test of time no doubt. Jenna leaned away and continued her speech.
"Which is why I got you something too." You waited to find out what it was but she just laughed. "You're gonna wanna sit down for this one" you were heavily confused but laughed and shrugged. You sat down on the couch and closed your eyes.
Your heard Jenna rummaging around to get your gift, her grunting implied that it was something heavy or large. She placed the large box in your lap and placed your hands at the top, holding them tightly.
"This is something I got for you to show you how much I adore you. I love you so much, sweet boy and there are so many more gifts to come" she says and kisses the top of your head. "Open your eyes, bunny"
You did as you were told and soon recognised the box art from the LEGO set you admired from days past. You let out a loud gasp, mostly out of shock, and Jenna was just enjoying the sight.
You soon begin smiling widely like The Joker and tears brimmed at you eyes. "Jenna..." you sniffled. She really did that for you. How did she even know? "How did you...?" You stuttered, unable to focus on what your voice sounded like. You were too excited to care.
Jenna took her place next to you on the couch "Let's just say I have my ways. Happy Valentines day, bunny. I love you more than gifts could ever describe" She kissed you temple and laid her head on your shoulder.
This was a Valentines Day success for sure.
A/N
Short one but I hardly have the time to write so I hoped you enjoyed this one. Not proofread.

Ok you can’t just leave us hanging! What happened to pocket monkey wukong the poor little thing.
✨Ooooh hohohohoh hohoOOOooo~
Well, my dear anonymous, since you're so interested, let me ease your mind of such curiosity.😼
shall I~😈✨
Are Poor Little Peaches' sad story begins with a neglectful collector, a JTTW fan, and a not-so-great owner, who didn't see him as a companion but more as an object to be owned and not cherished.
Unfortunately, peaches happen to be the last piece in his collection.
Tumblr media
In a cramped little cage, peaches learn very fast to keep to themselves around angrier and hungrier creatures of his kind, especially if he's the youngest collector's item in the group.
and that food won't always be fairly divided between him and his new unkindly friends.
Tumblr media
When the small cage starts to stink, the fan collector would merely drape over a small cloth cover so he wouldn't have to endure the stench of the unkept cage he neglected to keep up with its cleanliness.
The collector didn't see why he should be bothered with maintaining the storage box that contained his collection—it'll only gather dust and emit an odd odor at moments
There will be plenty of time to clean it when he gets around to it ultimately... And unfortunately one night he needed to clean it badly
Tumblr media
Poor peaches thought it was his chance to voice out his hunger and his need for water to his not-so-loving owner. But unknown to Peaches, his owner has never once had any contact with a living collection in his life, especially one that needed so much attention.
Tumblr media
His owner was startled when he came in contact with a tiny soft paw. The collector staggered back and gripped his glass storage box, breaking all but one of his new and prized possessions.
Peaches does not understand the sudden drop and new feeling of his location at all, but he is too worried about the growing pain in his tummy and his very parched throat.
All of a sudden, a horrible screech emanated from his owner, one that he'd never heard from his owner; not once in his life did Peaches hear such a sound come from him. and he didn't know what to do.
He understood a few things his owner was saying, but they started speaking rapidly, sounded more confusing, and became unhinged. The last thing Peaches really understood was, "Do you have any idea what you did!?" "I spend so much money on you; did you know that!?" "My collection, it's all broken, broken, brokeaaaaAAAAAAAA!!!!" Peaches was so scared out of his mind that he did the one thing he could think of, which was to run; he didn't know where he'd never run out of his cage out of this room, his world, and he wasn't going to stop until he couldn't hear the screaming.
Tumblr media
Out of the frying pan and into the fire he goes.
I hope this answers everyone's curiosity about his backstory I might try to do mangoes probably be less dramatic for the spoiled pocket monkey.

forever omocat merch collector
the guidebook is REALLY thick and a bit heavy, there's a lot to take in on both of them so I'll have to read them comprehensively later, but it really feels like the ultimate omori fan item... especially as someone interested in the animation of it. flipping through the guide, the way it's formatted and the chibi illustrations to go along with the story reminded me of reliving my experience with omori when i was making my fanbook...

As a huge fan of the franchise, the God of War III Ultimate Edition for the PlayStation 3 features one of my favorite physical collector’s items for a video game. Recreated in stunning detail, this sculpted replica of Pandora's Box features fine etchings that Pandora herself would approve of. 🏺
In addition to the game itself, this special edition also includes a hardcover art book that collects interviews and sketches from the original trilogy. Definitely a super cool piece that now doubles as a storage box for all the extra weapons and accessories from my assortment of God of War figures!

To[o much] Infinity and Beyond…
Section 1: How we got here
Magic the Gathering is an IP with 30 years of established lore that spans thousands of in-universe years with hundreds of legendary creatures and planeswalkers, all with their own stories to tell. The very concept of planes and planeswalkers (although the status of planeswalkers in the lore seems to be in flux) gives room for new planes with unique characters to be visited at any time, and they can even interact with established creatures across the planes, old and new. The possibilities of the stories to be told are limited only by the creativity of the writing team and the direction they want to take the main story. With the already rich and established lore within its own multiverse, it would be reasonable to assume that Magic would be able to stand on its own without the need for bringing in other brands or IPs. That has not been the direction Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast have gone in over the past few years, however, with the introduction of outside IPs that eventually evolved into the utter takeover that has become Universes Beyond (UB).
I think the first pebble of this avalanche to fall began with the silver-bordered Hasbro IP crossovers Magic made for Hascon 2017.
Tumblr media
Initially, these seemed completely harmless and entertaining. Dungeons and Dragons, Transformers and Nerf are all fellow Hasbro owned IPs, and making non-tournament legal cards with these fourth-wall breaking references made for some really cool collectors items. I remember these coming out and how cool I thought they were, the Sword of Dungeons and Dragons in particular. These were very well received, but we had no way to know where this positive reception would lead.
Two years later in 2019, we received the My Little Pony, Extra Life charity promos.
Tumblr media
Following a similar formula, these were non-tournament legal promos with another Hasbro IP. It was not for everyone, but it was for a good cause, and opened up Magic to a potentially brand new fan base. Cute, fun, and a harbinger of things to come the following year.
April of 2020 brought Ikoria, Lair of Behemoths, a brand new plane with new characters, mechanics, and marketing strategies. For the first time, booster packs of Ikoria had had the potential of containing a brand new art treatment borrowing from an IP outside of Hasbro: Godzilla
Tumblr media
These cards were essentially just alternate art versions of cards that (except for one exception that was later rectified) would have regular, in-universe versions available in the set. The irony of the Godzilla cards is that they gave a perfect blueprint for the non-Magic IP cards, but this blueprint was not used very well after this set. The next and most controversial domino to fall to this point came later that same year.
October of 2020 introduced Universes Beyond via Secret Lair Drop Series: The Walking Dead, and it changed a lot for how other IPs would interact with Magic going forward.
Tumblr media
As opposed to the Godzilla re-skins from Ikoria, the Walking Dead (TWD) cards were mechanically unique, black-bordered and therefore eternal format legal, and exclusively available in the Secret Lair for a limited time. This had the Magic community clutching their pearls for a few reasons, the primary of which at the time was the availability of the cards. If any of these cards were extremely powerful or became a combo-piece in any eternal formats, only being available in a Secret Lair would have caused the price of these cards to skyrocket. WotC did acknowledge this and in August of 2023 finally rectified the issue by printing in-universe versions of TWD cards in Wilds of Eldraine, and the cards from the initial Secret Lair drop ultimately did not had much of an impact regardless.
Ultimately, the larger problem Magic players had with this Secret Lair and Universes Beyond as a whole was simple: many Magic the Gathering players do not want other IPs infiltrating their game. This viewpoint has been expressed since the Godzilla cards, and has been voiced again every time a new UB product is announced. It has only been three years since the announcement of UB and I already could not name all of the different releases off the top of my head. In order of release as of October 2023, the following IPs have been used for tournament legal cards: The Walking Dead, Stranger Things, Arcane, Street Fighter, Fortnite, Dracula, Warhammer 40k, Transformers (for real this time), Dungeons and Dragons (twice), The Lord of The Rings, Evil Dead (literally had no clue about this one until writing), The Princess Bride, and Doctor Who. These cards have been printed everywhere and in every form from more re-skins, to exclusive Secret Lair drops, to set boosters, to Commander decks, to entire sets or even all of the above! And more IPs are coming with no end in sight. Jurassic Park, Fallout, Assassin’s Creed and Final Fantasy have been announced for a few weeks now, and just today (10/23/2023) we received news that the Marvel collaboration including multiple sets (similar to LotR) is coming soon as well. The amount of just regular, in-universe Magic product being printed is already incredibly difficult to keep up with, and the speed at which new UB sets are announced and released outpaces it easily.
Tumblr media
Section 2: No turning back
Despite objection from the player base from day one, Universes Beyond is not going anywhere. These cards are now an established part of game, going so far as the multiple cards from the Lord of the Rings sets becoming (expensive) staples in both Modern and Commander. Almost every Magic product usually takes a couple of years in development before being ready to release, and with more than 10 UB releases already released in just three years, WotC/Hasbro has clearly been hard at work negotiating these deals with other brands (I have not even mentioned the Hot Pocket, Cheez-it and IHOP collaborations but those are far less consequential so far), and there is no evidence this will be slowing down with no real end in sight. If UB had been limited to IPs set in similar settings to Magic, there may have come a time when they simply ran out of different IPs to use, although even then there would have been plenty to work with for a long time. However, the variety of IPs used has shown there is no limit to what IP they may use, so the only thing stopping it would be the deals happening behind the scenes.
Aside from never running out of IPs, the reality is that a lot of these products have been incredibly well designed and ultimately well received. The Warhammer 40k Commander decks were excellent in both design and flavor, and the LotR set was everywhere upon release (I think this would have been the case even if the One Ring 001/001 promo did not happen too!). Despite not using art with characters from the Magic universe, these cards are generally just really good Magic from a design perspective, and the product tends to sell well. Ultimately, Magic is a really fun game, and getting new cards that are well designed and unique is going to get people excited and buying cards.
Section 3: The Good
So if UB is here to stay, what are the consequences? I will start with what I feel like are the good. Firstly, using other IPs to bring new people unfamiliar with Magic is a win for the game as a whole. Having more people playing Magic is good for everyone who plays as it just means there is a higher chance of the game continuing to exist. More fans equals more people buying cards which equals more Magic. I can imagine that a large number of new players may not have been interested, but then their friend showed them the new set coming out that was Warhammer or Lord of the Rings themed, so they gave it a shot with a precon and fell in love with the game like so many of us have. Additionally, a lot of the IPs selected are excellent choices that I know I have enjoyed and many others have too. The Lord of the Rings was executed extremely well, and I am excited to get my hands on a Doctor Who precon as well. We may never know if the good folks designing Magic are happy about the amount of outside IPs being used, but regardless of their opinions, they are putting love and attention into the design of the cards themselves, and that shines through in how fun and balanced most of these products have been. Finally, I would like to point out that Magic fans have been making outside IP alters and fake cards since photo editing became possible, so there has always been large portion of the fan base that has wanted this exact thing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There is true fun to be had sitting down at a table where the commanders are Aragorn, Negan, Eleven partnered with Jim Hopper, and the 11th Doctor! Wanting to deny other people the fun of playing with their favorite fictional characters within their favorite game is not the kind of energy that should be brought to a table. The game is called Magic: the Gathering, and anything that helps bring more people in that are having fun with the game is a net positive.
Section 4: The Bad
As far as the bad goes, there is no shortage of it, most of it is hypothetical. First and most important for me, the endless spoiler season is only made even more overwhelming by UB. I have not truly paid attention to a spoiler season since Double Masters 2022 because the amount of new cards being printed is just too much to keep up with. I fear the game may move past me the same way Yugioh did right around the creation of Xyz monsters and I simply will stop keeping up with it, while remaining a fan.
Another problem UB will continue to create is availability issues. This was a concern from the beginning with TWD, but those cards were not very powerful and therefore the supply has not been an issue. However, the Lord of the Rings set introduced the One Ring and Orchish Bowmasters, both now staples in Modern and Commander and holding prices well above $30.
Tumblr media
This is not a problem by itself, there are lots of cards that are in the price range throughout all popular Magic formats. The key difference is that cards printed in-universe are much easier to reprint into Masters or Standard sets, which can drop the price if they start creeping too high. This will likely not be an option for cards that are set inside a non-Hasbro IP. If the One Ring eclipses $100 per copy, will they have to make an in-universe version of it, and if so, where will it fit in a set? These questions have answers, but it took them three years to finally print the in-universe versions of TWD cards, so how long will we need to wait for a problem like this to be solved?
The final problem I am worried about with UB is the dilution of Magic as an IP itself. Magic is a pretty lucrative business for Hasbro, so much so that other companies are trying to get their piece of the trading card game pie. Pokémon and Yugioh have been around for a long time, but they are mechanically far enough away from Magic that the competition is not exactly direct. However, Flesh and Blood and more recently Lorcana are here now to try to dethrone Magic as the most popular TCG.
Tumblr media
Both draw inspiration directly from Magic for gameplay and rules, and both are coming for the roots of competitive 1v1 gameplay that Magic has focused on far less over the past few years. There are aspects to gameplay that these games simply are doing better right now than Magic, and players are gravitating toward these games for good reason. What does this have to do with UB? Well, as more and more IPs get involved in the mix, the brand of Magic gets harder to find. In the example I gave in the previous section, you could feasibly play a game of Magic in which not a single card features art from the actual IP, and for the folks that have played Magic because they enjoyed the world, lore and art, this is fading into the background of WotC’s priorities. If Magic as a brand becomes too diluted, the gameplay has to continue to be head and shoulders above its competitors to remain relevant, and that gap is closing quickly for competitive gameplay. If too many players get disillusioned with Magic and move to other games with more appealing competitive play, Magic as a whole will inevitably suffer. This remains hypothetical and completely dependent on these other game companies continuing to put love and effort into their games, but it could ultimately be the issue that finally puts Magic in second place.
Section 3: The Ugly
Ultimately, this is the least important point in general but the most important point to me, and it is the aesthetic appeal of these UB cards. I despise the UB triangle symbol and the frames in general are not my favorite either. I will always buy a in-universe printing of a card over the UB, and if a card is UB exclusive, it will never go in a deck of mine unless every other card is also in that frame. Overall, I think the art directors on these cards do a really good job of making sure they still largely feel and look like Magic cards, but that does not mean they hit the mark every time.
Tumblr media
I have no problem with my opponents using the cards, but it really does just keep me from wanting to use certain cards when they just do not look or feel like they game I love.
Conclusions
Universes Beyond is not only sticking around, but seemingly speeding up in production. If you play Magic, you are going to see these cards unless you are only playing with a personal cube. However, I think the quiet majority of players have received it very positively, and sales continue to be good. UB will expand Magic’s footprint to more people and bring new players, and that is good for everyone who loves the game. That being said, UB is going to require WotC to be extra vigilant of the impact of these cards on the game and ensuring they remain accessible, while also cultivating format environments that can compete with the up-and-coming card games that are dipping into their market share. There are legitimate criticisms to these cards both functionally and aesthetically, but as long as the same love and effort continues to go into the design of these collections to keep them fun and balanced, I think they will help Magic, not hurt it. (I can’t lie, I am stoked to have a Captain America deck one day soon)

Tumblr media
DJ Steve Aoki’s Dim Mak and Crunchyroll, the global brand bringing fans the ultimate anime experience, have joined forces to release the highly anticipated collaboration: Dim Mak x My Hero Academia. The apparel collaboration features epic artwork showcasing the abilities of U.A. High’s most beloved heroes-in-training, their dedicated teachers, pro-heroes, and devious villains across an array of colorful tees and hoodies; all reinterpreted through Aoki’s effervescent, punk-meets-raver aesthetic.
In addition to the wearables, Dim Mak has partnered with Jasco Games, creator of the UniVersus, My Hero Academia Collectible Card Game, to deliver one coveted CCG card for each item purchased. Three unique cards were designed featuring Deku, Bakugo, and All Might alongside signature Dim Mak holo-foil branding details. All three limited edition CCG cards are playable and exclusively available as blind packs with purchase, only while supplies last.
“My Hero Academia is one of the best modern animes around. The determination, courage, and compassion of each character – both hero and villain – are incredibly relatable and admirable.  While I find myself marveling at the U.A. High students’ growth in the face of adversity, I also empathize with the traumas experienced by the villains and understand how they came to be who they are – I truly hope that Deku can help them come around….” Steve Aoki continues, “I’m also an avid CCG collector and am beyond excited to release these beautiful, limited-edition cards by UniVersus…I can’t wait to see them in action, and I know that fans will collect them and cherish them for years to come as I surely will!  PLUS ULTRA!!”
The Dim Mak x My Hero Academia collaboration includes bright tie-dyes and solids showcasing action-packed artwork featuring fan-favorite students from Class 1-A including Deku, Bakugo, Ochaco and Todoroki; heroes including All Might, Endeavor, Eraser Head; and villains like Shigaraki, Dabi, and Toga. Chris Gaizat Inducted Into TGC Hall of Fame
Chris Gaizat is a board game designer and long time member of The Game Crafter community. His company, 317 Games, uses The Game Crafter for prototypes and short runs.
We created a prototype of his game, "Shadowgate: the Living Castle", and it was noticed by Trick or Treat Studios at Gen Con. Soon after, they signed a publishing deal and the game is now available for purchase worldwide!
We're excited for Chris to join the TGC Hall of Fame and below you can read our interview with him:
1. Tell us about yourself and how long you've been designing games.
My name is Chris Gaizat, I'm 44 years old, work professionally in the IT industry for about 15 years, and I'm the co-owner of 317 Games and Project Lead for Shadowgate, The Living Castle. Our team consists of Eric Gaizat, John Durham, Karle Peterson, and Brian Harley. We've been designing board games for probably close to 8 years.
Tumblr media
2. Please tell us about Shadowgate: The Living Castle.
Shadowgate: The Living Castle is a 2-4 player gothic fantasy adventure game, that has players gaining XP points and collecting an inventory of items that help them traverse Castle Shadowgate, by completing Quests, fighting Monsters, solving puzzles, and answering Djinn riddles. As their adventure progresses through Shadowgate, the players will need to assemble the one weapon, the Staff of Ages, that can defeat the Warlock Lord and the Behemoth and stop them from destroying the world. Though you enter Castle Shadowgate as a party, whoever has the most XP points at the end is crowned 'High Lord of the Westland' and claims ultimate victory! (Let the shenanigans begin!)
There are 8 different characters with their own unique traits and abilities that you can choose to play as, and three different boss characters to challenge for variety, and the game itself lasts around 60-90 minutes, depending on how casual you like to play.
Tumblr media
3. Where did the idea for this game come from?
Shadowgate was originally a Macintosh game released in 1987, and then ported over to the Nintendo Entertainment System (where people remember it from mostly). In 2014, Zojoi (formerly ICOM Simulations) Kickstarted a remake of the game that updated the graphics, music and game play to give it a much grittier feel, and it was great in its own right. As part of the 2014 re-release, Zojoi had created a card game called Quests of Shadowgate, and though it was an interesting idea, it felt like Shadowgate in name only. I was an avid Shadowgate collector and fan, and I developed a great working relationship with Dave Marsh, (one of the co-creators of Shadowgate) and asked if we could take the assets of Shadowgate 2014 and turn it into an adventure game, and Dave excitedly said yes! (Dave is a huge fan of Dungeons and Dragons)
So, the obvious question was, HOW did we turn a single player, point-and-click adventure game into a multi-player board game? For that we had to pull from all the lore surrounding Shadowgate, we drew inspiration from the Scholastic novel, "Before Shadowgate" to help answer this question. The card game, though flawed, DID get one thing correct, and that's the characters. Over half of the playable characters appeared in "Before Shadowgate" and it was in the book that I realized, Jair (the hero of Shadowgate) didn't go to Shadowgate alone! So, a multiplayer adventure game wasn't a stretch; it was canon!
Our dedication to the IP is about making it FEEL like a Shadowgate game, and we normally get great feedbacks saying we hit our mark, which has been the most encouraging thing about this journey. One way to get immersed into the game is by playing the 2014 Shadowgate soundtrack in the background; it lends itself to a great atmospheric soundtrack! The composer, Richard Douglas, even created a unique track, just for the board game, which can be found on our 317games.com website!
4. What makes this game special/unique?
One of the things that I think makes this game special, aside from nostalgia, is that it's an adventure game that is easy to jump right into. The pre-made characters cover nearly all the familiar character types, like: Warrior, Wizard, Thief, Cleric, Paladin, Dwarven Smithy, Archer and Shaman, and you'll find plenty of value in subsequent replays with them. We've been working on some possible expansions that add up to 8 more characters with new classes and abilities, as well as new Item types, new Quests, and even co-operative boss battles! If this game does well, it will have an AMAZING future! We also have a version that is in the 8-bit style from the old NES game. We'd like to re-release the game in that style at some point too.
5. How many iterations of your game did you go through, and what was the toughest process to get it to its final state?
Well, our initial iteration of the game was a complete failure! Our major problem was that we wanted a game that played like the WotC game, Betrayal at House on the Hill. Trying to mimic that style of game, where the map just expands on the table had no real flow and was honestly, a complete disaster. After I stopped the game play right in the middle of our first play test, I expressed that I wanted to start over, so we did that. We gathered up the room tiles and it got really quiet. Each one of us went into creativity mode. We all started to give our input, and we then started to break the castle down into three sections and like a domino effect, the addition of other game elements just started falling into place. I'm SO glad the original design fell apart; I didn't want people to say that we were copying Betrayal, and I'm very proud of the unique game it became.
John, Karle, Eric, Brian and I play tested the heck out of it for over a year, and before Trick-or-Treat Studios picked up the game, it probably went through 4 or 5 iterations, mainly cosmetic and mechanic changes. We were introduced to an online group of individuals who helped us with the gameplay, and one of them in particular, (Shirley Wu) also edited the game for me. I'm so grateful to Christian and Josh Mosely, Shirley Wu, Toshiro Sado, and Mike Gallagher, for dedicating every Wednesday night for a year to helping us get it into its final state!
The biggest hurdle we came to was the final boss fight. Originally it was a random event; each player chose one of three cards to destroy with the Staff of Ages, you might get 50, 100 or -25 XP points at random, and though this was probably the closest thing to mirror the actual last fight with the Warlock Lord and Behemoth, it left a lot to be desired and none of us were satisfied by it. We literally stared at the Final Quest for an ENTIRE YEAR and one of our team, John Durham suggested we make it a boss battle, which was a GREAT idea, and when we took that idea and some suggestions from play testers at Gencon we FINALLY broke that obstacle and gave us an idea for an actual boss fight! And just when we thought we were done it was Trick-or-Treat Studios that really pushed us to take that idea and make it even more fun and challenging to the players to use with the Energy cards. Needless to say, it worked, and everyone loved it! How it turned out was much more engaging, and way more competitive.
Tumblr media
6. How did you go about getting your game signed with a game publisher and how has the experience been?
In 2021 we had brought Shadowgate, The Living Castle to Gencon to show it off to the public for the first time. The game was starting to gain traction, and we were just dipping our toes into the crowdfunding scene, however while we were at Gencon, we were in-between gaming sessions of the First Exposure Play Hall, and we were touring the main hall, when we stopped at a booth for the company Trick-or-Treat Studios. If you know anything about Trick-or-Treat Studios, they have their hand in EVERYTHING horror, and hold licenses to pretty much every horror franchise out there, and this was their first year promoting their horror-themed board games. It caught our eye because we've been developing a Trick-or-Treat board game for a few years now of our own, and we started talking to the owner, Chris Zephro, and he told us they were looking for horror-themed board game submissions, so this seemed like a GREAT opportunity to pitch our gothic horror-themed board game! We swapped numbers and play tested it for them online, and they offered to produce it for us that very night!
It's fascinating and scary when you deal with a company to produce your game, as there were several changes the game went through to get it to the final state, and we like to think we know best for our design. I remember feeling very hesitant to let Trick-or-Treat's design team make their changes, but they were very open to our creative suggestions. I think they knew it was our baby, and really changed things for the better and with our approval in mind. Joe Stoken, our assigned project manager, and the designers Jody Henning and Andy Van Zandt were awesome to work with!
7. Could you describe any influence The Game Crafter has had on your success as game designers?
Game Crafter brings our ideas to life in the very real sense of the word, and in an affordable manner! Turn around is quick and when I hear people talk about bringing their game ideas to life, I immediately point them to your website. When we design our games, the first thing I do is look through all the components you have to offer. The fact that Game Crafter is consistently adding new components, gets the gears turning; how can I incorporate this new component to make my game better? I LOVE those emails when they hit my inbox!
8. What's next for you?
What we really want to do next is two-fold. We'd like to get our expansions for Shadowgate out, and there is interest in doing that with Trick-or-Treat Studios, but we've been working on our Trick-or-Treat game for quite a while and may be looking into producing it ourselves. We're getting quotes now, and it has been extremely popular when we bring it to Protospiels all over the mid-west. We think it will do really well.
9. Any last words of encouragement or advice to all of the designers reading this?
I am in a unique position, where I got to meet the man who created one of my favorite game franchises of all time, and in doing that I got to be a part of that franchise I wholeheartedly adore. My 10-year-old self can't believe it! Don't be afraid to talk to people and start your network. It started with just one conversation in a Facebook group. After that, one door opened after another, just because I reached out to Dave Marsh and offered a video service to promote his product. It presented opportunities to meet my play testers, and ultimately pitching it to Trick-or-Treat Studios who were willing to take a chance with our vision. Don't shrink back; the worst they can say is "no," but getting to the "Sure, let's do it!" is all worth it in the end.
I want to thank everyone who helped get it to the finish line, and especially the 317 crew, for allowing me to run project lead on it. Without the creativity of the group I don't think we could have made it.

Random Danganronpa S musings after having 24 hours to digest the announcement
Tumblr media
— Get a load of that cover art. I’m sort of surprised that they spoil the existence of Toko’s other personality right there on the front, but I guess that’s a pretty early reveal in the very first game and it’s also heavily telegraphed in advance, so no biggie. The real question here is: WHY is Komaru so prominently shown when her starring role is the only game not included in the collection? I would fucking LOVE to later find out that we’re also getting Ultra Despair Girls in this set somehow, but I don’t think there’s any chance of that. And I seriously doubt she’s going to be integral to the events of Danganronpa S: USC. So what gives? Perhaps it’s just another way to mislead newcomers, like the prominence of Kaede and Hifumi. The entire selection of characters here is sort of curious and makes me wonder if this art already existed before now. I don’t believe I’ve previously seen it, though.
Tumblr media
 — I wonder how they’re fusing the turn-based combat into the board game this time? Obviously there shouldn’t be some random “exams” that occur at the end of a board, because the story is no longer centered around completing years of school. So what’ll be the driver behind encountering enemies? Maybe they’ll be on random board spaces?
— They showed us the screen where you can choose higher-level cards that represent more powerful versions of the game characters just like in Ultimate Talent Development Plan. But the main reason to use those rare-unlock options in UTDP was to get tougher characters for use in the Despair Dungeon. I’m not expecting a dungeon crawler to be included with this one, so what’s the purpose of the S-level cards and such? ........ Unless I really should expect dungeon crawling to be integrated into this somehow! I’m just spitballing now, but maybe we will progress through various boards, and some boards will represent dungeons/combat areas?
Tumblr media
— Of course I assume Junko is behind the invasion of Monokuma and his army of Mono-bots. I’m quite confident that this is going to be another AU where she has a whole new plot for driving despair just like she did in UTDP/Despair Dungeon. Perhaps the entire resort trip is part of her overarching plan. We’ve already seen Junko (on the title screen) and “Junkuro” (seen above) in the screenshots so far, too, so Mukuro is presumably acting as support for Junko’s plot once more. And I wouldn’t be surprised if Tsumugi is in on the plot again as well... even though I’ve long wanted to see a version of Tsumugi who isn’t just evil. I was actually disappointed when I unlocked the scene in UTDP that revealed she was still putting on a front to hide her true nature.
— The prescence of “Junkuro” strongly implies that we won’t once AGAIN won’t get to see Mukuro as herself. :( That was one of the big disappointments of UTDP for me, although I realized at the time that UTDP was mostly made out of existing assets. However, now that they’re making a bunch of new sprites and CGs for Danganronpa S, it makes the idea of trapping Mukuro in her disguise just much harder to swallow... I hope I’m wrong and we can unlock some way to play as Mukuro as herself. UTDP at least gave us a retro sprite for her, but it doesn’t seem like it’d be that difficult to give her a proper sprite set.
Tumblr media
— What can we glean about the gameplay from the above screenshot? What drove the player to wander into a dead end of the board? Will such dead ends potentially hide some special items, rare events, or secret pathways? Is the player’s choice to venture down there somehow connected to the “Mission” stated at the bottom? Are these “missions” going to be side objectives or the main requirements to progress? It’s also noteworthy that every image/video of the board we’ve been given shows the same section of the same board. Is there only going to be one massive board for each runthrough, or will we still see different board options/”courses”? I hope for the latter, but I could do without the Despair Course...
Tumblr media
— Dude, I was shocked to see that Togami is ripped on the title screen. Still, I guess it’s believable enough that he’d take the time to sculpt his body as much as possible. I was much MORE shocked to see Kazuichi looking fucking CUT in the swimsuit scene. What the hell?! How many abs can you develop from mechanic work? Because I am assuming none. I guess he must work a lot of crunches into his days.
— Remember the “Future Course” in UTDP? It took a ton of time to unlock it, but I loved that there was a way to bring in the Danganronpa 3 anime-only characters, even if it was just for simplistic retro-style sprite interactions. I wonder if we’ll see anything similar with those characters in this release? They already have the retro sprites, after all! So here’s hoping for more time with the Future Foundation crew.
Tumblr media
— Really digging the fact that you now unlock story/interaction scenes on a menu where you can rewatch them. That’s going to make the scenes I’ve experienced so much easier to track! I’d really like to see them provide some hints for any spaces on the menu that are unfilled, but I won’t hold my breath.
Tumblr media
— The selection of characters featured in the Collector’s Edition art print is sort of random, isn’t it? When you take all three together, is there any commonality they share? This feels like the result of some Japanese fan poll that determined these to be the most beloved/marketable options or somesuch.

So, one thing (though I’m gonna rant about more than just this one thing) I’ve discovered that’s wild to me about the fashion doll (IT dolls specifically) hobby versus the BJD hobby is that it’s normal or common and not a taboo or no-no to sell dolls before you have them in hand. Like, literally right after the revealing of the convention collection and welcome doll a lot of sales posts popped up on the WClub forum for these dolls. There’s even threads for dolls that haven’t been revealed yet!… And there’s zero owner photos, just company prototype images! I think, I know, that years in the BJD hobby buying and selling on DOA have conditioned me to find this off putting and a little shady (especially when I see people asking 200+ over the initial price of the doll). Then I get really frustrated when I think a) about all the collectors who genuinely wanted tickets and the dolls, but didn’t get them when a good number of these scalpers (calls ‘em like I sees them) did get tickets. I realize that all hobbies face similar or this very issue and there isn’t really a great way to vet people when buying tickets to events or winning right to buy lotteries, but it seems really rampant and just accepted within this corner of the doll hobby. And b) that it really effs up the true value and what should be the actual secondary market prices of these items. Can you imagine buying something for double or more than it’s initial cost without having seen non company/prototype images? What if it’s not great and ultimately not worth the overinflated price? (In general I think IT does produce quality products and they deserve praise and credit for it). I really love the dolls and the company but the amount of greed cultivated by “fans” of these dolls leaves me feeling sort of negative towards the community in general. Like, it’s literally a large number of people trying to make a huge profit (more than the company and artists) off of someone else’s work and that has always grossed me out. It’s my least favorite thing about all collection based hobbies.
Unfortunately I have no real solutions or answers, just typing out some thoughts and feelings.
Oh, but I am loving these doll reveals so far! The welcome doll was an especially great surprise and I can’t wait to see the rest.!

Happy New Year!!!
I know this is a bit belated but my new year started off in a way I didn’t expect. At the beginning of 2021 I was excited about the different projects and content I had come up with for the new year. As I started to get to work on implementing my ideas my health took an unexpected dive. A little over a week ago I was rushed to the ER via ambulance because I ended up on the floor in such severe pain I couldn’t walk and could barely move.  After talking with a nurse from my insurance company she recommended I go to the emergency room.
I was really nervous about calling an ambulance. I was worried that what I was going through would turn out to be nothing more then muscle spasms (which I have suffered from before) and it would be a very expensive trip for nothing, I was nervous about the fact no one would be able to come with me because of the COVID rules and I was also a bit scared about the possibility of catching COVID at the hospital.
Between the pain and my parents encouragement I dialed 911. Ultimately, I’m very glad I did as it turns out I needed emergency surgery to remove my gallbladder.
Full recovery takes 4 to 6 weeks but I’m slowly getting back into life. I’ve been able to work on new songs and get some of the new kinds of content up on my socials. Starting with the picture above.
As I mentioned in a pervious post I’m a fan of miniatures. I’ve been a collector of miniatures things since I was kid. Whether it was miniature decorative boxes, miniature sets (I still have my polly pockets), miniature statues, miniature pumpkins at Halloween and the list goes on and on. This little hobby of mine continues to this day. There’s just something about the small size of these items I find really cute. As a previous post mentioned I’m even working on building a miniature bookstore.
So when I was scrolling through Facebook one day an ad popped up showing me this miniature zither. I was soo excited because it combined two of my loves: miniatures and music.
Once it arrived I put it on my desk as inspiration for when I write songs or as I like to say a miniature zither for miniature music.

American Girl Collecting
Hello folks. I have gone down the AG rabbit hole again, and I physically picked up and considered a McKenna in Once Upon A Child, but she was kind of a mess and she was $65 and I ultimately decided that it wasn’t worth it. It did get me thinking though. What dolls are on my list?
So that’s what this is about. I already have 17 dolls, but a collector is never truly done, especially when it is American Girl (I also collect Bratz and Rainbow High, but I digress). My boyfriend and I (yes, you read that right - I am an adult woman) have decided to go to Chicago for Spring Break. For a few reasons - it is nearby, Covid makes airplanes sketchy, and we didn’t want to drive more than like 10 hours (rip beach trips...stupid midwest). SO anyway. Chicago. Seems like fun and yes there are things to do and sights to see, but most importantly.... American Girl Place! Now, my boyfriend being the super supportive man that he is (really, he is amazing), suggested that we could also go to the AG store! Now that that has been decided, I began planning what I might buy (because in this day and age, I’m not going to go to AG and not buy something). I have a list of dolls that I do want to eventually get, but most of them are retired, as I was a child in the early 2000s. However - there are 2 dolls from my childhood that AG still sells. One has been cubed (Josefina) and the other has a robust collection (Julie). I *knock on wood* am not too worried that Josefina is going anywhere, and I just got Marisol over the summer, so I decided that I am going to pick out Julie! *cue months of anticipation*. I’m probably more excited about my AG plans than my impending graduation.. covid sucks. But anyway,, back to julie.
Julie is a beforever style doll aka she has the new meet outfit that is kind of girly for who the character is.. as they did to all of the historicals. Don’t even get me started on the Samantha change UGH (pink and frilly? Sam would never). Straight up, not totally historical outfits on some of these dolls. Good grief. Lucky for me (and unlucky for my bank account?) I actually already bought Julie’s original meet outfit since I liked it since 2007. Now wait a minute Blue, don’t you already have Kailey? Yes, I do. Blonde Hair, Brown eyes, different face molds. Eh, they can be sisters. Kailey is my surfer girl (and Kanani of course) (no I didn’t buy Joss lol). Julie is going to be my tomboy. Side note on similar looking dolls - Kira v Julie. That’s all. That, and I really don’t understand why collectors buy just like you/truly me dolls. I have one, who I only have because she was $20 at an estate sale and my family saw her and was like, this is gotta be for Blue. Thanks Family. I do love her (# 23). But like, for me - I’d prefer to collect historicals and GOTY as there are finite amounts of items for them (many - but still an end if you focus on a certain doll) ex. I have all but one of the Felicity outfits, all of the Kailey outfits, all of the Mia outfits, and many of other historical outfits. With the current day line, there are many new outfits every year, and there is quick turnaround, and I just don’t vibe with that.
other GOTY stuff - I currently have 5 dolls (Kailey, Marisol, Mia, Chrissa, Kanani), and I always get swept up in the hype, but it does wear off after a little while. I do hope to maybe eventually have all of them? It really depends on the space that I have, but at the top of my list right now are Saige and Jess. I am not a crazy fan of the more recent GOTY dolls, but I would love to have them all up through 2014 for sure.
Historicals - Ah. I have always loved the historicals. I could feasibly collect all of them, I am only missing Caroline, Marie Grace, Cecile, Josefina, Nellie, Kit, Ruthie, Nanea, Emily, Julie, Ivy, Courtney.. and that’s it (12 dolls)! Big Point Here - I am not trying to get all of them, and I don’t want all of them. I am very happy with the dolls I have that I have collected over the years. I probably will only get a few more (Julie, Josefina, Emily, and Ivy, mayyyyybe Courtney).
Anyway. I am super psyched to get Julie and it’s going to be great!!
Let me know what dolls are on your lists :)
