I have... Thoughts i wish to pour from my head
I fucking love digimon adventures. the first two seasons of digimon. I was reminded of this fact when I heard a snippet of “kids of america” or whatever that song is called and was catapulted back in time to when my siblings and I recorded the dubbed digimon movie on VHS when it aired during the saturday morning time slot reserved for such shows as Pokemon, Cardcaptor, and other anime deemed appropriate for children.
Now. My hyperfixations come and go with the seasons of my life and sometimes the conditions are right that I revisit an old fixation.
Such has happened in the past with digimon.
Numerous times in the past I have watched specifically the dub of the digimon movie because that brings me a reliable dose of joy to my life. An unspecified long ago I rewatched just the first season of digimon adventures, that being the one i remembered the best and have the most fondness for. Not terribly long ago, although longer than it likely feels, I rewatched the entirety of the first and second seasons of Digimon Adventures and Digimon Tamers for good measure because that season is several flavors of fucked up.
At this point ya’ll are probably going, “wtf do we care about your enduring love of the show digimon?” to which I say this: I have been granted many hours of the day to think about Things and in those hours after reliving my favorite memories of digimon I have formed Some Opinions on how the second season of Adventures could have been better.
Lemme say one last thing before going further, I love the second season of digimon adventures and it has some of my favorite episodes and characters and did a really good time skip, which is why it haunts me so. Also I’ll be using the dub names of the characters because i always watched the dub and that’s what i’m used to. Also Also, it’s been a hot second since I’ve watched the show so this is all based on my memories of what stood out to me from the show.
SO
Biggest thing i wish were different is Who Got Which Egg.
First off the Love Egg? Give that thing to Cody not Yolei! Cody didn’t get as much development as the other characters in my opinion. It seemed like the show was trying to make him a more sensitive Izzy clone, which in my opinion didn’t really work out. A much stronger part of his character was his connection to his family! Multiple times he was shown going to his grandpa for advice and he was shown really cherish that bond. It would have been a great to see that explored more and have that facet of his character shine through in his interactions with the other digidestined as he begins to consider them his family too. They could have had conflict where he realizes that with how tanky his partner digimon is, he might have a responsibility to protect his new family but at the same time doesn’t want his partner to keep getting hurt! I dunno man, but this child is full of love and kindness and I wish the anime had given him the corresponding eggs.
Meanwhile Yolei? Ya’ll guessed it! I’ve been saying it since i first rewatched the show! Give Yolei The Knowledge Egg! She is Brash. She is Curious. She is full of Fire not Love! If the anime had gone down the route of “Oh, she needs to learn to be more Loving(????)” I might have let it slide but No! She mentions having a crush on Popular Kid Ken a few times early on, then it’s dropped! Ya’ll remember that one time Kari was having a panic attack about the dark ocean or whatevs? Yolei slapped the shit outta her to get her to snap out of it! Again, if it was made more clear that came from a place of love and concern and not a “pull yourself together” moment, I’d let it pass. But the Knowledge Egg? That shit’s obvious. She’s literally the techie of the group, connects with Izzy, sticks her nose in everything and the Wings of Knowledge sounds cooler than the drill of knowledge. Sincerity egg is great tho, eggcellent choice.
BiG change comin through! Defo give the Courage egg to Davis, he’s got hot-blooded protagonist juice comin’ out of his ears. But also, give him the Hope egg instead of the Loyalty egg.
Now Hear Me Out! Think of the character possibilities! Despite his annoyingness, Davis has been shown again and again uplifting other’s spirits, from his friends, to freshly-humbled Ken, to a literal army of digidestined in the finale. A big part of why they won in the finale is because he literally had hope for the future! It could have been a great way to develop him as the leader of the group since that seems to be the role the show was pushing for him anyways.
And tying closely to the above are the egg choices i’d make for my two favorite characters. Kari still should get the Light Egg, but I think it’d be so juicy if TK got the Loyalty egg.
My thoughts on this are that we’ve seen that these two clearly have some baggage from the first time they were in the digital world. TK straight up has ptsd over the time patamon was Murdered In Front Of Him As a Child and Kari’s got some shit goin on with the dark Ocean that is Never Resolved. Wouldn’t it be just so fuckin’ crazy if the show was just like, yeah TK’s having a hard time mustering up any hope for the future right now and just, gave him an arc that was him working through his mental illnesses. There could be these scene’s where Kari’s like “you alright?” and he’s like “apparently not?” and then it’d be so emotional when he gets patamon to digivolve to ultimate using the crest of hope! There’s so much potiential!
But then Kari still gets the Light egg because that’s less a virtue and more just a characteristic that she emits. And because she still get’s her expected egg it takes longer for people to see that oh yeah, Kari’s got lingering trauma too. Then that could be tied into and represented by the dark ocean subplot as it eventually becomes too big of a problem to ignore anymore. Which would be a running theme with Kari from way back in the first season where she keeps putting other’s before herself to the detriment of her own health. Tying in with TK getting the Loyal egg, there’s an episode where he’s the only one who notices Kari’s literally glitching out of reality and is the one who follows her to the dark ocean to try and get her back. It’s already choice, but what if more of that? What if better Yolei and Kari bonding too? (I’m not gonna lie ya’ll it’s getting late and i’m wrapping it up) Like, Yolei is shown to not bottle things up and I feel like being the smartest in the group she could help understand wtf the dark ocean is and would be the most likely to go “bitch! let’s get you some therapy!” and just not give her the chance to keep saying “Im fine.” And that’s a dynamic i wish had been explored more rather than just slapping the two girls together.
That all might be a bit much to ask of a children’s anime. But what’s not too much is how giving him the Loyalty egg would contrast and parallel him to his own brother Matt! Think about it! Later in the season when they get the ability to dna digivolve he and Cody are paired up mostly because they’re the spares; but by by drawing these parallels between Matt and TK across the seasons, it would give him a reason to bond with Cody who is only a little bit older than TK was when he first went to the digimon world. There could be this element of big brother protectiveness and mentorship that would lead him to understanding what his own brother went through mixed with memories of what it was like from the other side and I just think it would make their dynamic more interesting.
*deep inhale*
That’s it for now, my head it 39% emptier and I am tired.
tl:dr I think Digimon Adventure 02 could have had more interesting character arcs and dynamics if they had shuffled who had which digi eggs.

Digimon Adventure 2020 Ep 16 Reaction
That was sure a thing that happened!  I do not know what to make of it!
OKAY so Team Chaos walked into a cave last time and popped out in Tokyo.  At the time, I thought that Taichi, Koushiro, and Mimi explored the cave purely because “it was weird.”  But Team Sora turned up to join them later, so now I’m like...  Wait, was this the rendezvous point the whole time???  Or???  I don’t remember these digivices having a tracking option like they did in Adventure...
ANYWAY, setting that aside...  Team Chaos finds themselves in Tokyo, wandering totally silent crowds who don’t notice the digimon.  Koushiro gently points out that something is weird- although I think it’s hilarious that “there’s wind in this cave” was judged weirder than “no one is talking or reacting to the digimon,” but I digress-
Anyway, Mimi wants a...  An avocado cheeseburger, which is a large talking point in this ep- apparently Mimi was the Agumon of the reboot all along- and, uh...  Yeah, Mimi is too pumped to be home to notice that things are odd.  Taichi seems pretty chill, too.  Koushiro looks disturbed the whole time, but doesn’t say much about it.
Anyway, when the kids finally try talking to someone (and was it me, or did a lot of the random adults have Hikari’s exact Tri hairstyle?????), and the humans all repeat a phrase or two on loop.  Surprise!  They haven’t left the Digital World at all, and they’re in sort of... a virtual simulation of Tokyo.
(Speaking of which, I guess the kids don’t live in Odaiba in the reboot!  I hadn’t thought about it before, but clearly, Taichi and Koushiro live in Shibuya.  I think Mimi was heading elsewhere, apparently an expensive part of Tokyo according to Taichi, but somewhere nearby).  Admittedly, all I know about Shibuya is: railways, shopping, nightlife.  Kinda different from Odaiba, a residential area!)
So, in my opinion, it was a bit boring waiting for the obvious payoff that the kids weren’t actually home...  And I would have liked more suspicion (and for Koushiro to speak up more; he was clearly sensing a problem the whole time).  But the visuals were really fun when Eyesmon and baby Eyesmon revealed themselves!  Kind of a Pokemon vibe, with like...  Maybe a mob of ghost Pokemon in the tunnels, working together?
So, Eyesmon used “Tokyo data” (retrieved from the Network, I wonder?) to make a virtual simulation of Tokyo.  Although it’s only an adult level digimon, its abilities made it difficult to battle; it kept rearranging the simulation to protect itself.
Eventually, Team Sora rolls in (with Weregarurumon sitting, legs crossed, on Zudomon, looking absolutely over it) to help fight, helpfully evolved all the way to perfect (why do they insist on evolving stepwise???).  And, of course, when we work together it’s much better!  They defeat Eyesmon, and we find out that:
1.)  It’s almost been 72 hours on earth, ie full power outage in Tokyo is near
2.)  Time seems to have synced up between the Digital World and earth, so the Chosen have lost their “slowed down time” advantage
3.)  Yuuko...  Doesn’t seem...  Concerned???  That Taichi has been gone... for roughly 72 hours?  And...  She is evacuating Tokyo... without him???  But that’s okay, because he’ll... call...  When he arrives home...  Assuming his mobile phone (which are canonically mysteriously functioning during the outages, along with the internet) does not lose all its power.  WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK, YUUKO.  SURE, LET’S FOCUS ON THE HEALTH INSURANCE CARDS, THAT’S THE FREAKING PROBLEM HERE.
This is one of those eps were the immediate “what now” seems more interesting than the setup.  Like... really, what now?  Huh.
So this is minor, but you know what I noticed this ep?  There’s a part where Mimi is scared, and she seems really let down that she’s not actually home.  Palmon says, “Mimi, let’s get that burger together when this is over,” and takes Mimi’s hand really sweetly, so Mimi will have the courage to face a truly horrifying opponent.  Like, the humans all grinning and turning on them and morphing into eyeball monsters?  Yikes!
My point here is that the Chosen Child/digimon bond seems a little different in the reboot.  The digimon and kids seem a little less... on the same mental level?  The digimon are always offering emotional support to get the kids through problems, instead of mostly physical support in fights.  Like, okay, for sure the digimon always support the kids, but...  The digimon seem to take on an older, advice-giving, guiding role in the reboot.
We see this the most with Gomamon, who basically held Jyou’s hand through everything, especially the first perfect evolution...  But we also saw it with Tentomon guiding Koushiro through his self-confidence breakdown, and with Gabumon seeing through Yamato’s fronts, and with Palmon gently guiding Mimi and being conscious of her emotions.
It feels a little less like “the other me, on my level as a child” and more like “my protector and personal life coach.”
It’s an interesting shift!  I’d be really interested to hear your thoughts on this.
And let’s just wait and see where the heck this goes next week, because I got no ding dang idea.

RE that zim/anpanman post - while Anpanman doesn't get as dark in tone, Baikinman regularly tries to kill people and has done things like tear pages out of an anthropomorphic book and make food-based characters spoil and rot. Not as gruesome as doing it to "real people" characters but that's not the point really; the idea behind it is still there, so Japanese kids are just very accustomed to an alien being that sadistic within the context of their series
First of all, I should point out I agree that Japanese kids are probably used to seeing more intense stuff on TV than american ones. Alot of shows like Yu-Gi-Oh, One Piece, Digimon and even Pokemon occasionally are known for having stuff edited out of the english dub. A pretty decent number of shonen series just flat out get marketed to an older audience in the states (stuff for kids in japan being aimed at middle schoolers here, stuff for teens being aimed at adults etc.)
Hell, I’m fairly certain Dragon Ball Z and Tenchi Muyo probably would have been marketed to adults in the US if it came out today too (Former for the violence, latter for the sexual stuff) and only got away with as much they did because they were on cable, and the idea that kids anime could appeal to adults simply hadn’t occurred to most western producers at that point.
I just…. Dont really think Anpanman is a good example of this? I also dont agree with the original poster’s Zim comparison. Granted, I suppose I probably should watch the show, but from everything I have seen of it, such as discussions on Bogleech’s website, it doesn’t seem that much edgier than standard kids show? Definitely a bit weirder and more violent than most preschool shows in the states, but overall, I doesn’t sound like Baikinman is much worse the your average kids cartoon villain.
I mean for starters, its pretty standard in kids media for killing and mutilating for non-human characters to be allowed, especially if said characters don’t have blood or flesh.
The obvious example is robots. Star Wars, Transformers, Doctor Who, Superman, Green Lantern, Teen Titans, Xiaolin Showdown, Age of Ultron,  - There are way too many shows, comics and movies to list that eithor aimed at kids or families, that have robots and cyborgs being torn apart in ways that would be pretty graphic if it happened to humans or animals.
Digimon is a related example - The only reason the franchise is allowed to have as much death as it does is because 99% of the fatalities happen to digital lifeforms that dissolve into pixels upon death.
Hell one of my favorite movies as a child was the original Toy Story, and all the scenes where Sid was mutilating and blowing up his toys would have gotten a hard R rating if he was doing it to people. I’ve heard a lot of people compare Sid to Dr. Frankenstein, but with toys, but at least Dr. Frankenstein used parts that were already dead (as opposed to tearing/cutting apart still living people) and put them together in a shape roughly resembling a human. Really, Sid’s toys are less Frankenstein and more human centipede.
I also remember Fosters Home for Imaginary friends having a similar reoccuring theme of “food friends” meeting a worse fate than Anpanman. This included half eaten, traumatized anthropomorphic food dreamed up by kids in stuck in fat camp, or a talking pizza dreamed up by the bully character and eaten and killed just seconds after being “born”
So, although obviously dark comedy, Baikinman doing those things isn’t really anything new for childrens media. Neither, is trying to kill someone, since a lot of cartoon villains have made serious attempts to kill people, they just never succeed.
But Zim successfully mutilating and removing the organs and body parts of human children is definitely not normal for a kids show.
Another issue I took with Revretch’s post was that she wasn’t just talking about Zim the character, she seemed to me to be claiming that “Invader Zim” the TV series wouldn’t be seen as edgy just because the main character is similar to Baikenman… but thats not really how it works? You can’t necessarily tell the tone of a show, just from the nature of its protagnist.
Like, by that logic, Courage the Cowardly Dog should be one of the most light hearted and kid friendly shows out there, but in actuality the world he inhabits is much, much darker, scarier and more surreal than Courage himself is.
Its true that, though the writers/network let Zim do much worse stuff on screen, there are plenty of other childrens cartoon characters whose personality is pretty similar to Zim, or whom are a lot creepier and more threatening. Mojo Jojo and HIM from the powerpuff girls are good examples of both of these, respectively.
In fact, Powerpuff Girls, Xiaolin Showdown, Codename: Kids Next Door, Danny Phantom and plenty of other childrens cartoons all have both villains that are similar to Zim, and villains that are considerably more evil, creepy or serious than Zim ever was, but the tone of these shows, overall, is a relatively more optimistic one, where the main protagonists have more or less happy lives and good always triumphs over evil in the end.
Hell, even Gravity Falls, with its use of creepy horror imagery, occasional forays into adult humor, and having one of the most infamous big bads in childrens animation (and easily my favorite from the last 10 years) remains a fairly optimistic show at its core, about family and summer adventures.
This is not the case with Invader Zim, which is a show where humans as a species are portrayed as so comically stupid and mean spirited that, even if Zim somehow successfully killed or enslaved them all, it probably wouldn’t come across as a big deal in the grand scheme of things.
A show where the Irkens are depicted both commiting genocide, and electrocuting a disobedient slave on screen, and whose society is such a dystopia they are forced to udergo intense military training from birth and generally assigned roles for life based on genetics.
A show where the elementary skool is portrayed as a collection of all the absolute worst aspects of public school, both in terms of how its run, and how the kids treat each other, exaggerated to an absurd degree.
A show where a reoccurring joke character is a homeless man, who got taken advantage by a fast food chain, paid in free pizza and a room in the back of a resturant, became morbidly obese (Yes, this is Bloaty’s canon origin story) and was last seen in the original show sobbing uncontrollably because he hates his life.
Also, although this was obviously changed significantly in the comics and the Enter the Florpus special, in regards to what was portrayed in the original show, its really not difficult to make the argument Dib’s own dad and sister don’t give a shit whether or not he lives or dies.
Of course, this was all done for very dark laughs, as well as to create a setting that was just the right balance of humor and nihilism that the viewer could choose to either root for, laugh at or sympathize with either Zim or Dib without really worrying about the actual moral implications of either sides goals.
I’m not saying Zim is the edgiest show out there, comedic or otherwise. With stuff like Warhammer, Berserk, Venture Bros, Metalocalypse and all manner of gritty 90s anihero comics, Zims pretty light hearted and goofy in comparison.
But for childrens animation? Aside from some of the 90’s “grossout” cartoons like Ren & Stimpy and Cow & Chicken (which varied a lot in quality, imo) I can’t really think of any others that come close (Maaaaybe Billy & Mandy, but I think its too tonally inconsistant, with a lot of episodes being pretty standard cartoon slapstick.)
Wow, I sure did type a lot. Sorry about that. But Invader Zim is one of my all time favorite shows, and fictional villains one of my favorite topics, so I feel like I have a lot to say about them.

no not really
16. what is your favourite letter?
either R or T, they’re both such helpful shortcuts for web browsing

I wish I had continued learning piano when I was younger. I was in the middle of lessons when we moved for the second time and we just never got another teacher.
18. list your best friends.
@verbalmoonwalking and honestly even though we haven’t talked much in forever @wombathills
19. would you rather be a skeleton or a ghost?
a ghost, way more opportunities and less of a hassle (imagine trying to navigate through the world as reanimated bones)
also there’s already some people i’ve promised to haunt
20. do you prefer fish or lizards/snakes? (as pets)
i dont have much experience with lizards or snakes (although I did have an anole for a year or so). i guess fish, they’re just so incredibly low-maintenance

25. do animals tend to like you?
heck yeaaaah
26. what is the worst book you’ve ever read?

34. do you have a camera? if so, what kind?
yeah, i actually sort of inherited it recently from my late grandfather, though I haven’t actually,,, used it yet.
Tumblr media
35. do you wear jewelry?
nope, used to wear a fidget ring a lot but who knows where that went. if i ever find a really cool necklace I’ll probably start wearing that all the time though.
36. sunrise or sunset?
sunset, sunrises are pretty but its a pain in the ass waking up the early
also seeing something like that in the evening is just a better state of mind imo
37. do you like to listen to music with headphones or no headphones?
depends on both the music and my mood, generally at this point no headphones though just because when i listen to music its while driving
38. what was your favourite show as a child?
I had a weird sense of almost reverence for Digimon as a kid. My mom had forbidden me from watching Pokemon, and I only ever saw like 3 episode of DIgimon once by accident because a day care had their cassette tape. I barely saw any of it but I loved it.
Season 3 aka DIgimon Tamers is still a solid series, and I still vividly remember watching season 4 on TV when I was slightly older and finding it weird but cool (4 was where they could actually like combine with their digimon)
39. describe your favourite spot in your house.
im the basement goblin so the couch down there is for all intents and purposes mine. also its right next to the room with the heater so hell yeah.
40. do you like to be warm or cold?
I like to be in slightly cold environments so I can be the kind of warm that isn’t just warm but warmed up, like the feeling of being warm when things are cold is very good.
41. the best joke you have.
i think the best jokes i ever did done was editing like 20 different photos of a friend of mine into dumb joke images
one was his face on a tube of laundry soap with some dumb caption along the lines of “ah, this is my life now”
42. whats the weirdest thing that you’ve seen happen in a public place?
first thing that comes to mind is a futon frame on the side of a highway. now let me clarify:
-it was sitting upright, not like it had been tossed aside
-it was on the INSIDE side, not the outside
-no mattress in sight
just… there.
43. CD or digital?
CD, I’ve been conditioned to love owning physical copies of stuff. On that note, also cassette.
44. who do you miss right now?
good friends, my dog, my will to live….
45. if you could combine two places in the world, which two places would you choose?
if by world you meant universe, lets combine earth with some other planet and see what the fuck happens
if you meant earth then Michigan and Ohio, that’d make some shit way more convenient for me
46. describe the worst substitute teacher you’ve ever had.
one of my high school english teachers went on maternity leave, and so we had a sub for about ¾ of the school year. i forget a lot of why the class hated her but a lot of it just came down to she was not good at teaching, and we had to deal with that for almost a whole year.
47. do you believe horoscopes?
short answer is no. less short answer is that while I don’t really believe anything like that, i still enjoy looking at and considering them, especially when they’re in shitpost format.
my sister came back from a mission trip to Africa a while ago and brought me back a small gift she got overseas, a pair of small handmade dice. i’ve developed a habit where on some mornings I’ll roll them before my day starts to see how high I roll, and sometimes interpret that as what the day might be like. do i believe it? not especially. but I almost sort of pretend to believe it. that’s sort of how i treat horoscopes, except even a little less than that.
48. are you spiritual?
eh
49. describe your pets ( or family if you dont have pets )
we had an extremely good dog named Zeus for a long time. yellow lab, energetic as hell in his youth and even in his old age. started having pain in his legs as he got older and eventually we had to put him down a year or so back.
he’s honestly part of the reason im not sure about getting pets in the future, i dont know if I want to go through that again.
50. are you good at getting over mistakes?
I guess? I mean I’m good at getting over that post-”I fucked up” anxiety for sure, that’s a skill I learned in college within like a year. After a bad test or something I just started forcing myself to say “fuck it it’s over can’t change anything now.”

(Softly) a a a a a a a a h h h h i t ‘ s s o c u t e :,^3! Your art style always ends up look so adorable! Also nobody asked but terriermon is my favorite digimon! I got to draw him a while back because someone requested it and it was fun! Although the first time I saw him was in adventures third season but the first season was always my favorite! Which digimon cartoon did you like best? Also have you ever played the games before? Digimon Story cyber sleuth is a lot of fun! - persona anon
AHHH I closed the tab while I was writing and I forgot everything I wrote;; I’ll have to jot through my memories a little;;
I love terriermon too!! It has one of the CUTEST DESIGN ever and I love how it was portrayed in the animations, all easygoing and friendly. It was my favorite digimon in tamers!!//
Tumblr media
I never understood why it turned into a robot as it grew though.. I wish it retained some of its cuteness but it became all machine ._. on that regard I feel lopmon’s digivolution route makes a lot more sense although wendigomon looks pretty creepy..; I can’t believe lopmon turns straight to that..
I’ve watched two animated series, one being adventure(01) and another being digimon tamers! I didn’t watch 02 but I wasn’t really a fan of jogress or armor digivolutions anyway ‘v’; the plot for that part seems ok!
Both of the animations I watched were really nice and there are things I love about each of them but I have to say the first anime is forever going to be the best one in my heart!! That one was the only one I watched as a child and it stuck with me, the characters were all in-depth and they were appealing, it made me feel things and I feel the whole story was really well-organized. I just realized that the characters I liked ended up dying ever since I was small and it’s getting me hh;; I didn’t watch tri but I was really looking forward to it..;; but I heard it’s not as good as the first season. I figured it wouldn’t be ._.;;) I’m glad I watched that series as a kid. It gave me good memories, and perhaps it could’ve affected me in a way.
I remember playing some of the digimon DS games and they were okay, I wish it had more plot though. I also got one of those digivice? thing as a kid and raised a few digimons in it before it broke! I heard of digimon cyber sleuth too and it seemed like it was well-received which made me feel happy for the franchise! I didn’t play it yet, but I’ve been more of digimon kid than a pokemon kid when I was small so I wish it does well..I played a lot more pokemon games than the digimon ones I guess because the pokemon games are fun and its styles suit me more!// but I think I prefer digimon’s animes.. the first season, in my opinion, is pretty impressive!!
Thank you for liking my drawings!!/// I’m really happy you like them!! Moumantai~ :)
