Michelle Buteau’s “Welcome to Buteaupia”
Tumblr media
I joined UMD’s Hysterics to stream “Welcome to Buteaupia” on Friday, October 2, 2020. I found that the film, which inspired me to begin writing comedy again, related to my studies in three ways. Firstly, as a film it relates to my film studies major, although I did not find the directing particularly unique. Secondly, the way Buteau’s personal experiences shape her stand up relate to what we have learned about expressing ourselves through art in Arts Scholars. Lastly, Buteau’s discussion of activism and her experiences as a woman of color relate to my journalism major as part of her set was educational.

Tonight I saw the Thesis concert here at the Clarice. The show consisted of two different dances featuring different choreographers. I personally did not really like the first one. It was very confusing and many of the motions and plot of the dance did not flow and did not make sense. The second performance was amazing. It was about family and remember those you have lost. This was the last performance but it was amazing.

🎨#ArtIsAWeapon Image: #DavidDriskell at his studio, 2010. Photo: Jack Montgomery Reposted from @studiomuseum "I wanted to bring these patterns of exclusion, segregation and racism to the attention of the art public. I did it to a certain extent, so people would know that this is not a level playing field and that somebody has to point this out and have the courage to show why it should be done my way; not necessarily perpetuating the notion that it will always be segregated, it will always be separated, but the fact that it needed to be recorded; it needed to be in the compendium—since if it is not there—as far as I am concerned, it doesn't exist if it is not in the compendium." — David Driskell David C. Driskell was a prolific art historian, curator, artist, and institution builder foundational to the redefining of the art historical canon and the life of Black art. A scholar and practitioner, Dr. Driskell was committed to championing the work of artists of African descent across disciplines—serving as an ongoing inspiration to the museum community and to the global art world at large. Today, we honor Dr. Driskell's legacy and celebrate his retrospective, "David Driskell: Icons of Nature and History", at the Portland Museum of Art (@portlandmuseum). This weekend is the final opportunity to see the show before it closes on Sunday, September 12, 2021. — #DavidCDriskell #Artist #ArtHistorian #Curator #BlackArtists #ArtScholar #BlackBrilliance #BlackGirlArtGeeks https://www.instagram.com/p/CTqXsuTA3Px/?utm_medium=tumblr

On Wednesday, January 29, 2020 my roommate Lauren and I went to watch Leyla McCalla perform live during the Concert in Close Quarters at the CCC. We came right at 7pm when the event started and I ate some pizza as everyone listened to Leyla play. I loved her songs in French because I think it is a beautiful language. I was also amazed at how easily she switched between different instruments: you could truly see her musical talent. I wish there was more of a conversation between listeners and performer, but it was still a fun and unique experience.

Sunday night I went to see The Weeknd in concert at the Verizon Center! I only took videos so I don’t have any actual footage of the stage or anything to upload to Tumblr. However, these are some of the selfies my friend and I took during the show. It was a blast, all of his crew is very talented and he sounded amazing in person. In addition to witnessing a great performance, my friend and I actually were asked to come backstage for an after party! We got to meet and hang out with The Weeknd’s friends (like his guitarist pictured above) and Travis Scott was in the room dj-ing! Overall, amazing time and a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Today, I joined the Film Studies Department in Ulrich Recital Hall for a talk by Disney Pixar lighting supervisor Jonathan Pytko. Jonathan primarily discussed his work on the upcoming Disney Pixar film The Good Dinosaur, which will be out in theaters on November 25 of this year. He also gave us audience members an unexpected treat -- we had the opportunity to view some finalized scenes from the unreleased film! Now I know I’ll have to see the rest when it comes to the theaters. I wasn’t allowed to take photos inside of the event for copyright reasons so I just took a photo of the movie poster.
I was pleasantly surprised at how much I got out of this speaker event. I learned a lot about what goes into the behind the scenes of making an animated film, and even greater detail in regards to the role the Lighting Department plays. The main objective of the lighting artists is to "say something to the audience without using words.” They strategically choose where to include and focus light in particular scenes to direct/draw the eye in specific places. They do this through using contrast, shadows, etc to make shots as beautiful and impressive as possible.
