Louise Curham - bio note

In her art practice, Louise makes performances, photographic works, video and 16mm films and installations. She also draws whenever possible. Themes in her work include  decoding the ‘black box’ of contemporary technology and extending the life of old media through creative archiving. Her methods include hand processing super 8 and 16 mm film, making performances using old media and re-enacting early media art performance.

Louise loves the way old media draws attention to relationships, both the relationship with audiences and the performance of technology. At the moment, she’s thinking about the ecology old media needs in order to keep operating. That resonates with other work Louise does in practical land care and in thinking about her suburb, Kambah, a misunderstood suburb of the south of Canberra. 

Since the early 1990s, Louise has presented exhibitions, public programs and community events throughout Australia and internationally. Her art has been supported by ArtsACT (2020, 2013), Bundanon Trust (2012), BankART1929 (Yokohama, Japan), UNSW Student Union (2002), Creative New Zealand (1995).

In the exhibition Kambah, I used pinhole photography and cyanotypes as a way to investigate the visual experience of Kambah. I photographed everyday scenes. The intention in using old media was to represent things we in Kambah see every day using a process that makes them look different, to encourage residents to think more about these places and what they mean to them.

The following two images were exhibited in 'Kambah' Jan/Feb 2023 at Tuggeranong Arts Centre. Both are produced using Harman direct positive paper in a homemade pinhole camera, built during the Covid pandemic lockdowns.

The purpose of this exhibition was to work towards the 50th anniversary of the suburb Kambah in 2024. It was also to develop entries for the Kambah Peoples Map, in development by me since 2020. The map uses a locative media tool developed by artists in Belgium and Spain. it allows a curated map primarily for use on a mobile phone while in a set location, here's a link to the work-in-progress map.

Since the early 2000s, a strand of my practice focuses on re-enacting 1970s media art in the artist/archivist collaboration with Lucas Ihlein under our nom de plume, Teaching and Learning Cinema (T:LC). In this image Lucas is setting up for Horror Film 1, a work by British artist Malcolm Le Grice from 1971. TLC carries out this re-enactment process as a way to learn about the work which we then document in instruction manuals, or 'user's manuals' as we call them.

My film work using old media, 16mm and super 8, is known and used by Australia's experimental music community. The films must be performed live, so they have some presence in the experimental film community, but that is limited due to that requirement for liveness.

Kambah Turns 50 - planning for Sep 2024 for a community celebration

On Sat 26 Nov, a few of us met at the Diversity Hub on Laidlaw St to have a chat about how to mark Kambah's 50th.

Unfortunately, the sheep at the shops proposal was not successful with ArtsACT but that doesn't mean it's a bad idea. That was about making temporary flocks of sheep for each shops and getting the community to decorate them.

Сюжет игры полностью копирует сюжет фильма, не считая некоторых уровней, но раз здесь нам дают не только наблюдать за обаятельной Пейшинс, а ещё и управлять ей, история становится намного интересней. По части геймплея, тут немного всё стандартно. Однако, благодаря акробатике протагонистки, все бои выглядят ну весьма эффектно, а её способность преодолевать препятствия, благодаря всё тем же навыкам акробатики, разработчики выполнили в довольно привлекательном виде. Несмотря на все недостатки игры про Женщину-кошку, которые мы видим сейчас, в те годы игра дарила массу эмоций и геймплей её выглядел вполне себе достойно. Игроку придётся путешествовать по закоулкам города, по местам, где собираются все бандитские отбросы. Зачищаем, попутно выведывая информацию любым удобным способом. Всех прикончили? Всё узнали? - Идём в следующее место. Что сказать по геймплею... Ну, он тут весьма разнообразен. Нет, перестрелки тут как под копирку, а вот более изощрённые способы убийств способны удивить своим количеством и оригинальностью. Советую выбирать зарубежную озвучку, а-то наши так озвучили, что игра из серьёзного шутера про месть превращается в комический квест. Хоть игра и считается провальной, могу сказать, что разработчики неплохо продумали геймплей и постарались сделать возможности Железного-человека наиболее приближёнными к возможностям в фильме. Конечно, реализовать можно было и лучше, но для 2008 года и игры по фильму, надо сказать, продумана более-менее. X-Men Legends 2: Rise of Apocalypse

Fantastic Four

2005BeenoxAction, Adventures Ну что-то у меня перебор с играми по фильмам в этой подборке. В этот раз годнота, в которую я в своё время наиграл не один десяток часов, вместе с другом. Экшен-игра по мотивам фильма 2005 года, где команда только получила свои способности. Однако, сюжет связан лишь общей историей, а в остальном, игра Fantastic Four имеет кучу своих уровней и локаций, а также, большое количество противников, о которых в фильме мы даже не слышали. Коридорность уровней не столь страшна, как однообразие геймплея, но забив на принцип "бей - беги", можно получить немало удовольствия, ведь несмотря на то же однообразие, играть мы будем за разных персонажей, с разными суперсилами. Чего только стоит пылающий Джонни Шторм и его невидимая сестра Сью. Hulk

2003Radical EntertainmentStealth, Beat em`up Опять у нас один из самых популярных и необъятных супергероев Marvel - Халк, также успел получить свою игру, которая, кстати, весьма достойно получилась для своих лет, что неудивительно, ведь разработкой занималась Radical Entertainment, известная по играм Prototype и The Simpsons Hit & Run. Игра в точности повторяет сюжет фильма 2003 года с Эриком Бана в роли Халка, а это значит, что здесь героя ещё не успели подстроить под киновселенную и ослабить, так-что мы сможем ощутить, какого это, быть самым большим и сильным во всём мире. Что ещё интересней, нам дадут поиграть не только за зелёного громилу, но и его альтер эго - Брюса Беннера, специалиста по гамма-лучам. Конечно, кому-то больше нравится бегать и крушить, а не прятаться от солдат в облике человека, но здесь это грамотно построено, да и всю игру быть злобным монстров надоедает, тут то нам и приходит разнообразие, в виде щупленького человека. Deadpool

2013High Moon StudiosAction, Shooter Безумный и болтливый наёмник даёт нам возможность побывать в его шкуре, попутно ломая четвёртую стену и комментируя всё, что происходит на экране. Deadpool получилась весьма спорной игрой, как считают многие, но внимания она точно стоит. Геймплей довольно разнообразный, а также присутствует куча пушек и холодного оружия, ну и куда же без таких знаменитых способностей наёмника, как бессмертье и способность к телепортации, которую, почему-то, часто исключают в кинокартинах. Насколько я помню, в игре также есть система прокачки персонажа. В игре есть свой сюжет, который Уэйд довольно часто портит, что придаёт игре особый стиль и юморит нас на протяжении всей игры. Да, без шуток харизматичного Дэдпула здесь тоже не обошлось. Чего стоят только постоянные приколы персонажа над другими персонажами, например над Кейблом и Росомахой. Marvel: Ultimate Alliance

2006Raven Software, Vicarious VisionsAction, RPG Хотел когда-нибудь увидеть всех супергероев Marvel на одном экране? Игра Marvel: Ultimate Alliance даст тебе такую возможность. Тут собрано огромное количество персонажей, начиная с популярных Капитана Америки и Человека-паука, а заканчивая Призрачным гонщиком и Лунным рыцарем. Геймплей здесь в принципе схож с X-man Legends 2, ведь разработчики одни и те же, но играем мы с другими персонажами, которые не менее интересны, но и Люди Икс здесь тоже есть. Сюжет здесь, я бы сказал, не хуже чем в фильмах. В нём есть свои интересные особенности и неожиданные повороты, а в качестве протагониста выступит известный Доктор Дум. Spider-Man 3

2007Vicarious Visions, Treyarch, BeenoxAction Здесь нам придётся взять на себя роль дружелюбного соседа из Нью-Йорка, также известного как Человек-паук. Игра по мотивам третьей части фильма от Сэма Рейми, со всемилюбимым Тоби Магуайром в главной роли. Здесь нам предстоит пережить все приключения Питтера и встретиться со всеми злодеями из "Враг в отражении", а их там, насколько мы все помним, целых трое, включая ту жуткую версию Венома. Надо сказать, что игра получилась не самой худшей из игр про Человека-паука. В ней есть и интересный геймплей, и знакомая история, и полёты по городу, а что самое интересное, мы сможем надеть на себя тот самый чёрный костюм из симбиота. Персонажи, конечно, немного деревянные, но это не особо влияет на игровой процесс. Системные требования ОС: Windows XP, Windows Vista,Windows 7 Процессор: P4 2,8Ghz Оперативная память: 1 ГБ Видеокарта: 512 МБ видеопамяти и поддержкой шейдеров 3.0 ТРЕЙЛЕР

The Incredible Hulk

2008Sega, Edge of Reality, Amaze EntertainmentAction, Adventures Вот ещё одна игра про невероятного Халка, которая сейчас считается очень противоречивой, но, плевать на всех этих критиков и обзорщиков! В детстве я потратил кучу времени на прохождение этой игры и до сих пор не жалею. Да, у игры хоть и скучный открытый мир, но он тут есть. Да, противники - в основном болванчики, которых можно убрать на раз-два, но зато сколько способов это сделать. К тому же, в игре есть несколько костюмов, представляющих из себя разные версии Халка из комиксов, а сама детализация здоровяка, для тех лет, выглядит не так уж и плохо, чего не сказать о текстурах окружающего мира. По сути, Халк - здоровяк, которому нужно только бить и ломать. Вот этим нам игра и предлагает заняться, а тут у нас ещё и небольшая система прокачки. Бить врагов, ломать, кидать и разрушать всё вокруг, наблюдая, как целое здание превращается в пыль. Вот что предлагает нам The Incredible Hulk. Конечно, было бы очень интересно посмотреть на данную версию, но реализованную в наши годы. Может, когда-нибудь, мы и увидим анонс Marvel`s Hulk. Ultimate Spider-Man

2005Vicarious Visions, Beenox, TreyarchAction Вот она, одна из лучших игр про Человека-паука, благодаря которой мы смогли поближе познакомиться со многими персонажами из его окружения, которых здесь довольно много. Игра Ultimate Spider-Man визуально стилизована под комиксы, а потому, выглядит весьма недурно даже в наши дни, красиво и ярко. Ну, текстуры конечно бросаются в глаза, но при желании, можем установить парочку графических модов. Главной особенностью игры стала возможность поиграть за самого Венома. Да, в игре два играбельных персонажа. Один - наш герой �� красно-синем трико, а второй - жуткий монстр, способности которого в корне отличаются от способностей первого. Отлично продумано и сплетение историй этих двух персонажей. X-Men: The Official Game

2006Foundation 9 Entertainment, BeenoxAction, Beat em`up Ещё одна игра про Людей Икс, но на этот раз, нам дадут более углублённо поиграть за целых трёх мутантов: неуязвимый Росомаха с когтями, ловкий Ночной Змей с телепортацией и леденящий Айсмен, способный создавать из своего тела лёд. Каждый, конечно, со своим уникальным стилем игры. У каждого персонажа своя отдельная история. Росомаха, в своём стиле, будет кромсать и громить всех. Ночной Змей, на пару с Колоссом, по стелсу будет забирать одного врага за другим. Ну и Айсмен, игра за которого постоянно превращается в динамичный экшен. Честно сказать, задумка у игры классная, а вот реализация подкачала. Главное, что её спасает, так это разнообразие геймплея за счёт нескольких игровых персонажей. Однако, игра определённо стоит внимания, потому, рекомендую ознакомиться. Lego Batman: The Videogame

2008Traveller’s TalesQuest, Arcada На самом деле, есть множество LEGO-игр про супергероев, но я решил выделить сольную оригинальную часть про Бэтмена, у которой своя история, а для её написания приглашали авторов и художников оригинальных комиксов. Как и полагает игре в жанре лего, здесь у нас будет множество врагов, линейный сюжет и искромётный юмор, который всегда успешно разбавлял процесс прохождения. В напарниках у нас, кстати, будет Робин. В чём преимущество у этой игры перед прочими, так это то, что каждый эпизод можно будет проходить с двух точек зрения. S4E10 - Kim Yang

I’ve talked to ukulele players all over the world but it’s nice to talk to someone local again from Canberra where I live.  Originally from Taiwan, Kim Yang moved here around 10 years ago where she discovered the joy of music and, of course, ukulele.  Kim is now a full-time musician and songwriter who is about to release her new EP, Brave.  We had a chat a few weeks ago about her musical journey.

The exhibition brought together stories and experiences of Kambah people into a digital map. Users navigate to the map on their digital phone and walk around exploring Kambah by the map entries (not an app, just a web browser, light and user friendly). This was supported by a 2020 ArtsACT Homefront grant. Here's a link to the map (still a work in progress).

The new project 50 Sheep for 50 Years will be part of the exhibition 'Kambah Turns 50' at Tuggeranong Arts Centre in Aug 2024. Here's the info about that exhibition:

Exhibition title: Kambah Turns 50

Artists: Louise Curham with the Kambah community, Southern Arts Collective artists, Kambah artists and Canberra artists interested in Kambah’s 50th

Partners: The intention is to partner with ArtsACT through Arts Activities Funding, the Southern ACT Catchment Group (umbrella environment group for south ACT) and other groups in the community such as Southfest, See-change Tuggeranong, the Diversity Hub, Lake Tugg Sea Scouts, Mt Taylor Scouts, the Lions Youthhaven, Communities at Work, the Tuggeranong Community Council, schools (Namadgi, Mt Taylor, St Thomas, Lake Tugg College) and businesses eg Amberley Eggs, Cafe Blanco.

Preferred dates: July-Aug 2024

Summary

An exhibition by Kambah artists and the Kambah community to mark 50 years since the first residents moved into Kambah in 1974. There will be celebrations across Kambah in July, Aug, including this exhibition. 

The exhibition uses the stairwell in the Tuggeranong Arts Centre and upstairs gallery 2 (the back gallery upstairs). Along with the gallery works, a feature of the exhibition is a series of public events in Kambah, focused on the nature parks of Urambi Hills, Mt Taylor, McQuoids Hill, and the Bullen Range Nature Reserve that surround Kambah. 

How will the exhibition come together?

A public call for artists to be involved in the exhibition will take place 6 months before the exhibition. A public call for works from the community will take place over the 2-3 months leading up to the exhibition. 

1. The stairwell - community call out for documents about Kambah

The community will use the stairwell to share their documents about Kambah. 

2. The gallery space - curated by grouping media, artists not just in Kambah but also those keen to reflect on Kambah. 

In this space, Kambah will be explored by format - photography in one section of the gallery, textiles in a section, drawing in a section and writing in a section. The artists will be brought together through the Southern Arts Collective and call outs through Canberra arts organisations. The artists may not all be from Kambah but they will be reflecting on Kambah. A public call for works will go out. 

3. Events across Kambah with a focus on the nature parks

The event program will include:

interpretive walks on the nature parks led by the parkcare groups

a tree planting on Urambi Hills

A walk around Kambah exploring the digital ‘Kambah Peoples Map’

art-in-unusual-places for ten days around Kambah including extending the flock of sheep in the landmark sculpture on Drakeford Drive

a talk about landscape and design of public spaces in Tuggeranong using Kambah as a case study. 

A note about developing 50th events with the community using TAC as a base

There is much interest in the Kambah community about the 50th. I have become aware of this through my 2023 exhibition ‘Kambah’ and my discussion with parkcarers, Scouts and other community leaders such as Taryn Langdon, Geoff Pryor and Liz Stephens. There is an opportunity to hold some meetings with the community to discuss ways to mark the 50th. There’s an opportunity to hold these conversations at TAC and to tell the Kambah community more about TAC and its programs. That is something to discuss further if it is of interest to TAC. 

About the content

This exhibition investigates life in Kambah 50 years after the first houses were built in the new suburb (gazetted in 1973, first houses 1974). It depicts places, life and atmospheres of Kambah. The artists involved include members of the Southern Arts Collective, artists who live in Kambah and Canberra artists who want to make work to mark Kambah turning 50. 

The exhibition builds on my 2022 exhibition Kambah. 

Artist bio - Louise Curham

In her art practice, Louise makes performances, photographic works, video and 16mm films and installations. She also draws whenever possible. Themes in her work include  decoding the ‘black box’ of contemporary technology and extending the life of old media through creative archiving. Her methods include hand processing super 8 and 16 mm film, making performances using old media and re-enacting early media art performance.

Louise loves the way old media draws attention to relationships, both the relationship with audiences and the performance of technology. At the moment, she’s thinking about the ecology old media needs in order to keep operating. That resonates with other work Louise does in practical land care and in thinking about her suburb, Kambah, a misunderstood suburb of the south of Canberra.

Since the early 1990s, Louise has presented exhibitions, public programs and community events throughout Australia and internationally. Her art has been supported by ArtsACT (2020, 2013), Bundanon Trust (2012), BankART1929 (Yokohama, Japan), UNSW Student Union (2002), Creative New Zealand (1995).

The 3P Assessment: Parties, Political Interest Groups, and PACs

The Republican party doesn’t have a platform base on artist rights or even Civil Rights for Americans. The Democrat party not only has a platform for protecting civil rights, they also have a platform for promoting arts and culture. The Democrat party believes that the “entire nation prospers when we protect and promote the unique artistic and cultural contributions”, providing artists with the support necessary. Libertarianism “support full freedom of expression and oppose government censorship, regulation or control of communications media and technology.” They believe the government should not be able to control the art being produced or created. The green party has a full page on civil rights and education for the arts, but nothing directly protecting the issue of artists having their rights taken away. They don’t directly address the issue in any way. The peace and freedom party states that they “Provide uncensored government funding for ordinary people to create and enjoy art”. Although this seems great, they provide very little information which could possibly be misleading.

I agree with the Democrat Party and the Libertarian party. Both parties are the only two that directly addressed the issue. They both believe that art provides for a healthy nation and should not be censored by the government.

I most closely identify with the democrat party. I would vote for Hillary Clinton, it would be worth it because she so obviously promotes civil rights.

One National support group for the arts is the Americans for the Arts Action Fund.

This interest group is in place to make sure public places are a place for art, and to ensure future generations are guaranteed art education.

The Arts Action Fund is a nonprofit membership organization created by Americans for the Arts. The Arts Action Fund's goal is to enlist 100,000 citizen activists who will help ensure that arts-friendly public policies are adopted at the Federal, state, and local levels, and public and private resources are maximize. Their four main goal are to stand up for every child's right to a comprehensive and high quality arts education, promote public policies that provide individuals and families affordable access to all forms of the arts, rally national support against attacks to the arts, build political influence to ensure bipartisan support for the arts

The interest group just held a campaign to raise money for their cause. the funds raised during the campaign directly support advocacy and political efforts through both the ArtsAction Fund and the Arts Action Fund PAC. They set a goal to raise$30,000, and exceeded that goal by raising over $36,000 from Arts Action Fund members.

The group is located in Washington D.C.

There are no volunteer opportunities however you could still help by signing a petition or voting to improve the arts.

There are no state interest groups that support the Arts.

The national interest group is obviously more successful. The Votesmart website had no interest group related to any form of art, which is highly disappointing. The national interest group however, seemed very organized and well managed.

My issue falls under the “other” topic.

The funds are pretty evenly split between republicans and  democrats, however it leans slightly towards supporting the republican side more.

They have spend a total amount of $631,170.

70% of their budget goes to republicans, while 30% goes to democrats.
