( My darling I apoligize I am staying true to your dialog but I cannot let it end there with my poor muffin being crushed). 

Keith was tired and his body ached he had been going harder than normal and it was starting to catch up with him despite his years with the blades. So when he wearily stumbled out of the deck and into the main hall into Shiro sight he had dark circles and looked like he hadn’t slept.

The truth was Keith hadn’t. He’d been so busy feeling crushed and trying to make his body feel that pain instead of his heart that he’d stopped sleeping. This was day four no sleep and just a breakfast bar he’d begged Kosmo to bring him. Because he didn’t wanna go into the dining hall and see him. He didn’t wanna see the way his blue eyes sparkled and how big he smiled as he gripped her fingers under the table or made her giggle and flip her hair.

Keith couldn’t do it. He couldn’t. He’d save countless planets and fly across the galaxy. But he couldn’t bear the pain in his chest when he saw Lance so happy... so in love with her.

It wasn’t her fault and Keith knew that. He didn’t hate her it was the opposite. He envied the very ground she walked because she was someone lance wanted. He wished a 1000 times a day Lance would talk to him softly like he did her or just say he cared but it was never the case.

Keith thought he could be sneaky but Shiro’s dad instinct kicked in and the warmth of Shiro’s hand met Keith’s sweaty shoulder.  

“Hey what’s up with you and Lance?” There is was the effortlessness of Shiro’s question stung so much more.  Keith bit his lip clenching his fist and kept himself turned away. He wanted to hide things,” You’ve been avoiding him... I just wanna know if your okay?” 

OKAY?

Keith wasn’t okay he was walking on his edge every day. His emotions were all messed up in a boy who was in love with a girl more beautiful than sunshine. Who the hell was Keith to even just be. That was his whole story. He was an Okay friend, and Okay student. The only thing he’d ever done well was fly and maybe save the universe a time or two. 

Lance was.... Lance was sunshine and the smell of rain water. Lance was the one thing in Keith’s life that was always constantly the same. He never stopped making fun of Keith’s mullet or challenging him to races down the hallways. Offering him the last part of monkey bread when Keith would eye it hungrily at gatherings at home on earth. He challenged Keith. He pushed Keith and when he wasn’t around to give a smile or a fist bump when a mission went well. He was the one brave enough to get Keith up and come to him when the missions had failed. 

Keith bit his lip harder, “ I just...” He sighed it was hefty and weighty and filled with pain from his aching muscles. “ You know Lance is important to me.” Here it was the ultimate betrayal; it started with a sniffle. “ He means so much.... He means the world to me....” then the little warm droplets of tears started falling and his fingers shook unsteadily as he reached up to wipe them away. 

“A-” Keith had to take a minute and breath because he felt a sob building a way up his throat and he needed to speak clearly. He needed to express. He needed to let go because the pain was eating him. “And it just hurts. It...IT REALLY SUCKS SEEING HIM WITH ALLURA.” Keith Shouted and then the real waterworks started. He hunched forward for a moment and held his hand over his mouth and just let the sobs overtake him. Everything hurt. His fingers, his chest, his head, he tried breathing and finally he stood and wiped his nose on his gloved fingers,” God this is so stupid...”  “BUT IT’S FINE!!! It’s fine.” He waved his arms the tears falling heavily he couldn’t even see Shiro at this point anymore. He was just letting go and all he could do was feel and that ache in his chest was wide open now it was all over his body. “ If he’s happy, I’m happy right?”  and the tears just continued and all Keith could do was bite his lip and wrap his arms around his middle and hold himself together and breath.   Shiro is shocked because Keith hasn’t had this kind of reponse for a long time but the only thing he wants to do is wrap the younger Paladin in his arms so he does. He pulls him gently into his chest and Keith sobs wrapping his arms around Shiro’s waste as Shiro goes,” Hey, Hey shh. SHHH.” Tucking Keiths head just under his chin and looking at the wall in front of him where Lance is standing. 

His eyes narrow in on Lance knowing he heard the whole explosion. As Keith continues to sob in his chest every pain,” Keith when did you sleep last?” 

“ Four days ago...” Keith wails softly hiccuping and Shiro sighs. 

“No wonder your crying so much... Come on buddy... I have hippo shoved in a box I bet he’s got a cure for this. “ Shiro sooths guiding Keith away making sure that he doesn’t see Lance along the wall and he leads Keith away leaving Lance to deal with a hall filled with the echos of the destruction he caused.
