So. Connor. Dude had a hard life. He started off as the town blacksmith and really, really just wanted to be that. He accidentally fell into adventuring when he was trying to right a wrong against his brother's wife and then just continually found himself at the center of something bigger that he couldn't walk away from. The crux of the adventure was an Evil Queen who was doing bad things in the city-state Connor grew up in and lived in. It got bad enough that the adventuring party had to leave the city in order to seek out a legendary weapon to help defeat her. Connor hated leaving the city, since it was his home and where his family was. That legendary item wound up being in the heart of a haunted castle - BECAUSE OF COURSE IT WAS. That castle is what really broke Connor. He started having nightmares of his family suffering without him and his home getting ruined because he wasn't there. The castle was about two-thirds of the way through the adventure, and it's when Connor started to lose his sense of hope. By the time they left, Connor had gotten to a place where he just assumed the adventure would kill him, and he just hoped that his death would be meaningful. When he got back to Korvosa (the city), his family was in hiding but safe. The city had gone to shit, and Connor wrestled with "Should I have left" and "How many lives could I have saved if I'd stayed" thoughts. In the end, he was the one who dealt the killing blow to the queen, restoring peace. Really, all he wants is to just go back to being a blacksmith and put everything behind him, but he's now a hero of Korvosa, so an ordinary life isn't really an option for him anymore. He's definitely more of what one would normally think of as a D&D fighter or Knight of a city now. Before, he a reluctant fighter who really clung to "But I'm really a blacksmith", but after a 2.5-year campaign, he's a fighter. He's more hardened and tempered in what he's seen and lived through, and the sword is more a part of his life than he thought it would ever be.
