Filipino Artists Unite to Fight New Anti-Terror Bill
A group of artists, designers, filmmakers, writers, and other cultural workers in the Philippines have banned together to protest a new anti-terror bill that will allow the government to infringe on their civil liberties. They have launched an #ArtistsFightBack campaign and wrote a letter condemning the new legislation that has been signed by more than 1,500 people.
The controversial bill, which was passed by the Senate in February, was also approved by Congress earlier this month and is expected to be signed into law by President Rodrigo Duterte. The head of state received the bill on June 9 and has thirty days to veto or enact the legislation.

Shadi Ghadirian made her Like Every Day Series after her marriage to fellow photographer, Peyman Hooshmand-zadeh. In this body of work, Ghadirian comments upon the daily repetitive routine to which many women find themselves consigned and by which many women are defined. Each of these color photographs depicts a figure draped in patterned fabric in place of the typical Iranian chador. However, instead of a face, each figure has a common household item such as an iron, a tea cup, a broom, a pot or a pan. Her work is intimately linked to her identity as a Muslim woman living in Iran. Nonetheless, her art also deals with issues relevant to women living in other parts of the world. She questions the role of women in society and explores ideas of censorship, religion, modernity, and the status of women. “Calling all artists. The next five years are going to be hard. The conservative government are going to do their best to further dismantle the welfare state and introduce policies that benefit the rich over the rest of us. But while the right-wing media may be excellent at fear-mongering, we’re pretty certain the left have all the good artists. It’s time to prove it.”
Artists Fight Back is project that connects artists and designers with protest organisers: - Artists help the unions/parties/charities/NGOs/demonstrators get their point across. - The unions/parties/charities/NGOs/demonstrators help artists get work and get their work seen. They give this example: “Let’s say the FBU are organising a strike in the light of another fire station being closed down. They’re worried the press will try to turn public opinion against the strike so they’d like a poster or comic that succinctly summarises their grievances and aims of the strike. They’re open to ideas on how that could be done and have a small budget for the artist. They email all this to the email above and we add it to the list of possible jobs in a newsletter. That then gets delivered to all the artists who sign up. Anyone interested in the job can get in touch with the FBU directly via an email address provided.” ... It’s pretty much perfect, right? And to top it off Artists Fight Back recognises that artists should be paid (yes PAID) for their work, although “some artists may be okay with voluntarily work if the campaign/issue is important to them and they have time in their schedule.” So if you’re an organiser who needs an artist but has zero budget or the whole project is volunteer run, you can still use the Artists Fight Back channels to place your job ad. SO: - If you’re an artist who wants to be involved in helping fight back, you just sign up to receive emails containing job ads. - If you’re a party/union/charity/NGO/protest group/demo/organisation/etc that’s in need of a design/illustrations/logos/any artwork at all - email them at [email protected] with the full brief, deadline, and if you have a budget available.
