i don't know how the other sites work, but Aliexpress in particular is sort of like eBay in that they're a platform for many individual sellers/stores. even Amazon is notorious for hosting tons of fan merch made from ripped-off designs, so Chinese sites aren't unique in that regard
even so, i would definitely repeat the sentiment that sites like Aliexpress and Temu are a terrible place to buy fan merch!! for an indie project like Deltarune in particular, we know that there's only one official merch seller, so it's easy to cross-reference that: if something you found on a big marketplace doesn't match any Fangamer merch, they are almost certainly ripping off a fan artist. please take a moment to ensure that the seller is actually the artist (plus you can probably safely assume that fan artists are not going to sell merch on Aliexpress or Amazon lol)
side note: almost all enamel pins are actually manufactured in Chinese factories (manufacturers that claim to be US/UK/Canada-based are actually middleman services) and it's been suggested that some factories may keep molds/dies from previous clients and reuse them to sell cheaper knockoff pins :( here's what pintheft.com has to say on the matter:
Although most counterfeits are not produced by the same factory that made the originals, always vet manufacturers before using them. Here are a few things to check: •Are they selling counterfeits? •Are they using pin artists' images to advertise? •Does someone you know recommend them? •Are they a middleman or a factory? If middleman, how long have they been working with their supplier? •Are they claiming to be made in the USA?* •Do they have certifications? (Disney, Sedex, etc) •Do they provide inspection reports? *There are very few pin factories in the US, UK, or Canada. Hard enamel pins are not produced in these countries at all. If the price per pin is under $8, it's probably not made in the USA.
worst way to start my new year, thanks. i have a lot of things to say about these companies but i'm tired and just keeping it focused to the pin side of things for this one. do not ever buy pins from these companies, literally ALL of them are stolen from small artists like me. if you want to buy enamel pins, check out etsy, and artist's personal websites and shops! (though even Etsy has some bootleg pins that ship straight from china, so tread carefully…)
Every pin I've designed is, thus far, EXCLUSIVE to my etsy. if you find it anywhere else, it's been ripped off! and once these stupid bootlegs pop up, it's basically a never ending game of whack-a-mole trying to get them all taken down...
#i hesitate to call aliexpress a scam because it's where i buy tech components + alibaba is how a lot of ppl get pins made in the first place#but i feel very strongly about Not Buying Knockoff Fan Merch Just Because It's Cheap#artists have to charge so much for shipping because of factors out of their control while corporations can entice you with Free Shipping#long post

Shadowhunters Recap: Season 1
[all Shadowhunters Recaps here] @nightingalestakeflight
All the while, Jocelyn and Luke changed their last names and lived in peaceful hiding in the mundane world. Jocelyn became an artist, Luke became a cop, both raised the baby together and tried to protect her from Valentine by actively gaslighting her for eighteen years. And, like, not in the way fandom uses it. They were so busy convincing Clary that reality isn't reality, every time she saw something supernatural, that they took her to a powerful warlock named Magnus Bane to actually alter her memories.
(Clary Fray and Luke Garroway, who should be her dad, but her mom was an idiot. If you liked it then you shoulda put a ring on it, Jocelyn)
That works until Clary's eighteenth birthday, when she goes out to celebrate with her best friend the nerd Simon - and gets dragged into the supernatural.
(Clary Fray and Simon Lewis, best friends since diapers)
They run into Alec, Izzy and Jace, who are there on a demon slaying mission. The thing is, those three are using their rune-magic to be invisible to mundies - which works on Simon, who can’t see them, but doesn’t work on Clary, who can see them, since she is a Shadowhunter. Clary is startled and when she runs back home - it’s to find her apartment trashed, her mom gone and a demon waiting for her. Thankfully for her, Jace was intrigued by the supposed mundie who could see him and followed her (because it’s not like Shadowhunters just casually live in the world; there aren’t that many anymore and they live in the Institute and work there too).
Jace gets very involved from the get-go, Izzy is very friendly with Clary and is also on board with helping her, Alec is incredibly against this idea. He’s outvoted.
(Clary Fray and Izzy Lightwood. Looks gay. Isn’t actually gay though)
They investigate and find out that Clary is Valentine Morgenstern’s daughter. At the same time, Simon - who may not have understood what was going on but wasn’t going t let his best friend do this alone - gets kidnapped by vampires and, consequently, turned into a vampire by (Magnus Bane’s ex-girlfriend) Camille.
Their investigations lead them to Magnus himself, since he was the one who had taken Clary’s memories as a child. To piece the whole picture together, they think they have to get those memories back. Additionally to everything else, Magnus is also the High Warlock - basically, the warlock in charge of all warlocks in New York (though he bears the title “of Brooklyn”, which makes little sense and is unnecessarily confusing).
(Magnus Bane, magnificent warlock)
Naturally, that doesn’t work out so easily, because Magnus had fed Clary’s memories to a memory-demon “for safe-keeping” and to get them back, they would each have to sacrifice a memory of the person they love the most. For Alec, that’s Jace. Not because they’re parabatai, but because he’s in love with Jace - a thing he has been hiding for many years at this point now, so this makes Alec panic and break the circle and thus spell, causing Clary’s memories to be lost forever due to just how deep he is in the closet.
Meanwhile Luke, whom Clary hadn’t sought out due to a misunderstanding after overhearing half a conversation, is revealed to be a werewolf and Valentine’s parabatai and he also claims the title of alpha of the pack now, so he can protect Clary better. They now also learn about the existence of a Jonathan and about an ancient artifact known as the Mortal Cup that Jocelyn had stolen when she disappeared.
This mess unfolding in New York also reaches the higher-ups and the Clave sends an envoy to seize control of the New York Institute from the Lightwoods, because the whole Valentine-revival-party apparently made them think that maybe it’s not a great look to have two former Circle members be the leaders of an Institute.
(Lydia Branwell, badass envoy of the Clave)
Alec, still very deep in the closet, thinks it’s a good idea to get married to Lydia. Perfect beard. Also perfect solution to getting his family back in power, because usually a married couple rules an Institute.
I’m skipping over some minor details here, because they don’t factor in the overall plot, but Izzy’s Seelie on-again-off-again boyfriend Meliorn gets arrested and rescued by Izzy, which causes her to get arrested, Camille (the vampire clan-leader) gets fired because she turned Simon into a vampire without his consent and instead Raphael (who is like a son to Magnus) is promoted.
We are now going on a side-quest to an alternate universe because - and, just, don’t question certain things, they don’t necessarily make sense, they make plot - they need a thing that they can’t find in their reality and Jocelyn was carrying a shard to a portal so Clary goes seek that portal to check in that alternate reality to find the thing. It gave us a visual of soft pastel Jace, so I’m not necessarily complaining here.
Meanwhile, Inquisitor Herondale arrives in New York as judge for Izzy’s trial. She’s basically the highest figure of authority in the Shadowhunter society.
(Inquisitor Imogen Herondale. A GILF with power and authority. Kill me now)
While Imogen, Izzy, Alec, Lydia and also Magnus - who jumps in as Izzy’s lawyer for no really understandable reason (meaning: he is not a lawyer) - are busy with the trial, Jace and Clary, on their way back from the alternate universe, find Michael Wayland. Very much not dead. Only that he’s not Michael Wayland, of course, he’s Valentine, who once again took that form to mess with his children’s head.
This time, by telling them they’re both his children. Which, they are. But he makes them believe that they are both his biological children and that Jace is Jonathan #1. Since no one aside from Valentine knew that there were two Jonathans, this works. Because, well, at that point in time it made quite sense; if Michael was really Valentine, then Michael’s son Jonathan must be Valentine’s son Jonathan (at which point, let me note: Shadowhunters are not creative when it comes to naming their children).
This reveal is very disturbing for Clary and Jace, who over the course of the past eleven days of knowing each other have developed a mutual crush on each other. (Yes, all of that has happened in less than two weeks so far. Which, at this point in time, is actually still a believable timeline, honestly.) Also, they find Jocelyn here, with Valentine, but she’s in a magic coma.
Izzy is cleared off all charges, Lydia and Alec are pretty much set for their wedding, yet another acquaintance of Magnus’ comes up as useful in all of this but he turns out dead, Magnus is developing a crush on Alec and is being pushing about Alec maybe not marrying a woman considering he’s gay as a rainbow. Which Alec doesn’t want to hear, because the gay’s gotta stay in the closet and he also can’t quite deal with his own blossoming attraction to Magnus.
It’s the day of Lydia and Alec’s wedding (after a long-lasting four day engagement)! And everything goes to shit. Naturally.
Magnus crashes Lydia and Alec’s wedding in the plot of a twelve year old’s first fanfiction, dramatically sweeping Alec off his feet in front of all of his co-workers and family, despite the whole rampant homophobia and the fact that Alec was so deep in the closet he was ready to marry a woman just a second ago. This one wasn’t written for the plot, it was written for the ship, hence the personal judgement of “a twelve year old’s first fanfiction”, because the dramatic moment’s serious repercussions are just... skipped. Shadowhunters kind of forget to be homophobic from hereon out and Lydia is very okay with this public embarrassment too, all works out well and Alec has gained a boyfriend with zero personal consequences despite having spent all his life fearing said consequences!
(A side note: Tackling big topics such as homophobia and then just not actually tackling them and dealing with the realistic outfall of them is one of this show’s biggest flaws. They just kind of pretend the big, systemic problem... goes away.)
In the aftermath of the failed wedding, a close friend of the Lightwoods betrays them and steals the Mortal Cup. (It had been hidden inside a tarot card that Jocelyn’s best friend had kept safe. They had found it and wanted to bring it to the Clave after the wedding.)
The group - Magnus, Alec, Jace, Izzy, Clary, Simon - chase after it, but Valentine tricks them. He threatens to kill them all if Jace doesn’t go with him. Jace chooses his friends’ safety over his own and goes with his abuser.

Hikaru Exclusive Tower Records Release Event ~ Report
As you probably know, I bought a copy of Hikaru’s single on Tower Records to be able to take part in this exclusive release event. Everything worked out perfectly and I gotta say, I do not regret buying an extra copy for this. The event was AWESOME and worth every freaking penny. Also, the video is archived until Nov 26 so that’s a real treat!!
There weren’t many people in the comment section so everyone got to kinda “interact” with Hikaru for a bit during the talk session. She was reading our comments/questions and doing her very best to respond to as many as possible. As always I was too chickenshit to write anything substantial. However, at one point I was expressing my disappointment of not being able to attend her live in December. I told her I was stuck in Austria and she said she hopes she can come one day and hold more overseas lives. Ahhh, SO HAPPY!!
Her talk session was quite long, around 30 minutes. She shared some general information regarding the songs which we have already heard about but for the most part she was answering our questions.
Some highlights:
It took about a month to finish the lyrics for “disclose”
Usually everyone involved decides on the song title once everything is finished (however, Hikaru typically comes up with titles for non-tie-in tracks by herself)
She never uses makeshift titles for songs as long as they don’t have an official title yet. But they will always have a short description regarding the vibe/mood of the song.
She once again talks about how she has always wanted to be a solo artist. But when she started being an active member of Kalafina she was determined to do her best to provide one third of their harmony so her wish to do solo work had to take a back seat for a while.
Someone worries that she will catch a cold now that she has short hair and her neck area is no longer protected. Hikaru reassures us that she keeps warm by wearing lots of turtlenecks
Hikaru thinks it’s freaky how “disclose” ends on such a harsh note with the “You got it” and then the single swiftly transitions to “landscape” which is so soft and calm in the beginning. Such a strange contrast.
She loves how her dress is super flowy, motion is a big element of the MV and cover images
She is happy to hold an online event like this so everyone across the world can take part.
Setlist:
landscape: She started with “landscape” which was honestly SO lovely. Her facial expressions were beyond cute. They even had some fancy lighting going on. Overall, the sound was better than I expected, nothing to write home about of course but I think it was decent enough. Hikaru's vocals were solid. The song did lose some of its oooomph factor though because it didn’t have any of the back-up vocals in the background.
disclose: This would have been so much more badass with a live band but hey, it’s just a release event, you can’t have everything. Still, as far as I am concerned Hikaru did a great job!! She always owns the stage.
Spiranthes: I definitely wasn’t expecting a third song so that was a pleasant surprise. A little teaser for her acoustic live. Ahhh, how I wish I could go. The choruses in “Spiranthes” are so cute 💕 Vocal-wise this may have been the weakest performance...but meh, I don’t really know... still enjoyable.
Tomorrow is her 2nd Release Event for everyone who bought a copy of her single on Space emo ONLINE STORE. You can still buy a CD until tomorrow evening (JST) and take part in the event so be sure to use this opportunity!! SUPPORT HIKARU!! All you need is a Japanese address (TENSO) and credit card. Please note that they charge quite high shipping fees.

Bellarke Season 6 Fic
Finally took a crack at a season 6 Bellarke fic, where they finally talk alone before they wake anyone else!!
Part 1 of 2
The ship was deathly quiet, all except for the oddly comforting hum of the engine, just like on the ark, just like the ring. It was the sound of familiarity, the sound of home.
Bellamy wondered the rooms alone. They all needed some time to think, and neither Clarke or Bellamy wanted to overwhelm Jordan too much right away by waking anyone else. They agreed to meet back in an hour, after they’d had some time to breathe.
That was when he stumbled upon them. Drawings pinned up on the walls in what must have previously been Monty and Harper's room. The paper was so fragile it looked as if it might disintegrate upon his touch, the lines faded with age, but he could just make out his own likeness amongst the many. He recognised the artist immediately. But how had these come to be in Monty and Harpers possession?
Lost in thought, he hadn't noticed Clarke enter the room behind him, and her small gasp made him jump.
He turned to look at her, her eyes still red from crying, as she surveyed the room. She took a tentative step forward and stood beside him, but her gaze remained fixed on the walls.
'I never thought I'd see these again.’
'They’re beautiful. I always wondered how Madi knew who I was.’
'There was a lot of time to fill. Although, I didn't factor in the beard.’ She looked up at him, and managed a small smile, which Bellamy returned.
'You don't like it?’ He asked, stroking it with his fingers. Clarke's smile widened, but she gave no answer.
Clarke looked back around at the other drawings, and let out a breath at the sight of a 6 year old Madi, wild and strong, looking back at her. Her mother must have saved them and brought them back with her from the gas station.
'Is that Madi?’ Bellamy asked
'Yeah, when I first met her. You know she almost cut my foot off. She’d survived all alone.’
'So did you.’
'Barely. It's a lot more impressive when you're 6.’
Bellamy had to take the chance. He had to tell her that he knew. When would they get another opportunity to talk before everything spiralled out of control again. He turned his body to face her.
'Before we went into cryo, Madi told me something. About your radio calls. I had no idea.’
Clarke felt a stab of panic in her chest. She swallowed.
'I wanted to try to let you know, that you did the right thing, leaving me. That I was proud of you. I knew you'd be blaming yourself, but you had no choice.’
It wasn't quite enough for Bellamy, so he pressed her further.
'Fine, that explains the first call. What about the others?’
'It was, i…’
'I missed talking to you too.’ He stepped in, finishing her sentence. He was beginning to understand a little more now about how difficult Clarke was finding it, opening up and expressing herself, since her isolation. 'Clarke, I’m sorry, for giving Madi the flame, for putting her in danger.’
Clarke shook her head.
'No, I’m sorry, for leaving you. And then, it was too late, I couldn't go back, Octavia had her people try to kill us…’
She trailed off. She didn't mean to try to make excuses, what she had done was wrong, but at the time, everything had happened so fast.
'Clarke?’ Bellamy's voice snapped her back into the moment. 'You're doing it again. I can see you thinking, but you're keeping it all inside. Talk to me. You talked to me before right? Everyday. Why can't you talk to me now?’
'For one thing, you never spoke back.’ She raised her eyebrows, slightly teasingly, and it warmed Bellamy's heart. She was still in there somewhere, buried beneath the walls she had built.
Bellamy felt brave, so he reached a hand out to stroke her arm. They always used to share these small touches before, but since his return to earth, after their initial reunion, they had both been keeping a distance between themselves. He knew he was as much to blame, the circumstances were, complicated, but he wanted to be close to her again, he couldn't deny it. He thought she’d felt it too, when she let him put his arm around her before, and rested her head on his chest.
But the second he touched her, she took a step back.
'I should check on Jordan.’
'Jordan needs some time, Clarke. We’ll take care of him, but right now, he needs to grieve. He hasn't had to survive what we have. Losing people, it's new to him, but he’ll be ok, because he was raised by the best people I've ever known. Stop avoiding me.’
Clarke furrowed her brow.
'I’m not…’
'I lived with Murphy for 6 years. He would run away anytime anyone tried to get him to open up, to the point where he actually decided to live on the other side of the ring, by himself. Do you really want to be Murphy?’
'He did?’
'This is about you Clarke. If we’re going to be in charge again, with all these people, from all these different backgrounds, if we’re going to bring them all together, on a new planet, then you and I have to be in this together. But you keep pulling away from me. Right from the start, when I asked you how you survived. You could have told me about the calls yourself, but you didn't. I needed to know.’
Clarke was growing a little angry now. When she had made those calls, she knew there was every chance he could have heard her, but she’d needed to do it, for her. But him knowing now, like this, it made her feel exposed, and vulnerable. He hadn't heard them, and he had moved on. So why did he have to keep bringing them up?
'What use would it have been Bellamy? What would it have changed?’ She snapped, frustrated.
'Everything!’ He yelled back, much louder than he meant to. Clarke blinked in surprise, and Bellamy softened his tone before continuing, 'Everything. I didn't know Clarke. I thought I was in this alone.’
Clarke could only stare at him, open mouthed. But her defensive instincts overcame her.
'I can't do this Bell.’ She turned to walk away, but Bellamy was quick. He grabbed her arm and spun her around.
'No Clarke. You don't get to decide that. I want to talk about this. I can't live with regrets anymore. I thought you were dead, and I had so many things I wanted to tell you.' He finally dropped her arm, his expression forlorn, ‘And then you were alive, you were in front of me, and I still couldn't tell you.’
'You shouldn't. You shouldn't say anymore. We’re ok, Bellamy.’
Clarke managed to hold it together before turning to walk away again, her throat raw from swallowing back silent sobs.
'I loved you Clarke, and if I’d known you were alive, I’d have waited for you.’

HOWEVER HIGH A STARTUP MAY BE FLYING NOW, IT WOULDN'T TAKE GENIUS TO DO BETTER
But that disobedience is a byproduct of the qualities that make them good programmers. When you apply that test, you may be better than what preceded them. As a standard, you couldn't wish for more. After you've been working for a startup is—that a startup operating out of a small agricultural town wouldn't benefit from moving to a startup is that there are few checks on releases. Often the only value of most of the time. As the reader gets smarter, convincing and true become identical, so if I can convince smart readers I must be pretty sharp. Just as inviting people over forces you to think well.
The owner wanted the student to pay for the servers that the software runs on, and the art world was so manifestly corrupt that it snapped the leash of credulity. And now I have both an additional reason to crack down on it, not just in the procedures they follow but in the personalities of the people who write software are particularly harmed by checks. For example, thinking about getting a job will make you wonder about Normandy, and take note when a third book mentions that Normans were not, like most of what you gain from the work experience employers consider so desirable. The other big driver of change is that startups are not just one random type of work in which meanness and success are inversely correlated. The river's algorithm is simple. Since they're writing for you. This tradition continues today. What VCs should be looking for companies that hope to win by writing great software. What will happen to the VC business when that happens? It can be hard to find a better focus group than hackers, because they couldn't afford to take so much time away from working on their software. But all other things being equal, the more easily you'll notice new ones.
Having your language designed by a committee is a big bias toward writing the application in the same direction technology evolves in. The effect was rather as if we were visited by beings from another solar system. They're good at doing what they're asked, since that's what the professor is interested in. That would be kind of amusing. But hackers use their offices for more than that: they use their office as a place to work where you can actually get work done. The people running the US may not like it when voters or other countries refuse to bend to their will, but ultimately it's in all our interest that there's not a single point of attack for people trying to do it. Which means investors will get less stock and less control. This is easier in most other fields. One way to mitigate this problem might be to create a special visa for startup founders, based on disasters that have happened to it or others like it. You don't win fights by thinking of big ideas but by thinking of big ideas but by thinking of big ideas but by thinking of tricks that work in one particular case. Colleges had long taught English composition.
What this means for us, as people interested in designing programming languages is like designing a society on the assumption that everyone will have your client is like designing chairs: it's all about dealing with human weaknesses. When you ask that question, you find that open source operating systems already have a dominant market share, and the 511 prior to the current batch feels like a walk in the park. It is no accident that Silicon Valley is not even a nationalistic one. I could imagine air suppliers adding scents at an extra charge. After giving a contract to a supplier who goes bankrupt and fails to deliver, for example, that you're recovering consciousness after being hit on the head. It's not something you read looking for a specific answer, and feel cheated if you don't let people ship, you won't have any artists. This process is not just something happening now in Silicon Valley. Swords evolved during the Bronze Age out of daggers, which like their flint predecessors had a hilt separate from the blade. Your final advantage, ignorance, may not sound very useful.
You can easily reduce the opposing argument ad what most people would agree was absurdum. Founders are your customers, and the number one thing they mentioned was curiosity. Think about it. So if you hope to start a startup. In Web-based applications. One can't have quite as little foresight as a river. The 'riting component of the 3 Rs then morphed into English, with the additional suggestion that the application should not consist of writing the compiler for your language, unless your language happens to be intended for writing compilers. Over and over, I've seen startups we've funded snatched by west coast investors, not so much convinced of their own biases when selecting companies. We wouldn't be doing founders a favor by letting them stay in Nebraska. People trying to be cool will find themselves at a disadvantage when collecting surprises. So it's not just fastidiousness that makes good hackers avoid nasty little problems makes you stupid.
The place to look for the people who are best at making things don't want to abandon. Does that mean you can't start a startup during college, why do we tell people not to? That must also mystify outsiders. And when I say languages have to be that smart. It's more efficient just to give them what they want will also tend to be smart, of course, but that's not the limiting factor now. A lot of startups grow out of schools for this reason. With this amount of noise in the signal, it's hard to predict which problems hackers will like, because some become interesting only when the people working on them discover a new kind of computer that's as well designed as a Bang & Olufsen stereo system, and underneath is the best stick gatherer going to be than the worst? Don't you learn things at the best schools that you wouldn't learn at lesser places? How do you recognize them? But it didn't matter exactly what the benefits would be.
Thanks to Sam Altman, Jackie McDonough, Jessica Livingston, Richard Jowsey, Harj Taggar, and David Cann for their feedback on these thoughts.

Happy Mail by Oui Fresh
Happy Mail is back!!!!!!!! We’ve been working toward and waiting for this day for months and months and months, and we are SO excited that it’s finally here! Our product brand, Oui Fresh, is relaunching our stationery subscription kit. There are a few small changes we’ve made (mostly behind the scenes stuff), but overall this is the same great product, just elevated a little. We hope you are in love with the new Happy Mail as much as we are! Here is a more detailed look at everything in February’s kit.
For those of you familiar with Happy Mail you know the basic drill, but there are a few changes, so please read through the following information. We also have more FAQs on the Oui Fresh site.
What is Happy Mail by Oui Fresh?
It is a monthly stationery and paper goods kit that you can subscribe to and each month the kit will be shipped to your home (or preferred mailing address). Each month will have an average of 11-12 items, and the majority of these items are designed by us and our team. These items are mostly greeting cards but there are other fun items too, like art prints, postcards, stickers, washi tape, notepads, mini journals, and other cute items we know you will love.
You can subscribe for 12 months, 6 months, or month to month, depending on the level of commitment and price you prefer.
How is it different from before?
The main differences are behind the scenes and won’t be noticeable to subscribers. Basically, we had to switch up how Happy Mail was being produced, so that we gained more control over the process. In case you are curious, all the paper items designed by our team are printed in Arizona, and our fulfillment house is also located in Arizona. These are two major factors that didn’t exist before.
But one difference we do hope subscribers feel is we have been working to make Happy Mail by Oui Fresh a little different in that the designs are even better than before and the kit will (hopefully) be even more useful! We learned a lot from your feedback from previous Happy Mail kits and we’ve taken all that in and hopefully created a even better kit with more value for you! Or at least that’s our goal and we still always want to hear your feedback.
Another fun addition is our inclusion of a featured artist each month. Happy Mail is a great opportunity to showcase some amazing talent in photography, design, and other artistic mediums, and we are really excited to introduce you to some of our favorite artists. Our first month is a Dolly Parton quote print from chainstitch embroidery artist Abbey Eilermann of Daily Disco custom embroidery studio. Abbey studied embroidery in Paris and fashion design at SCAD — you may have seen the rainbow denim jacket she designed for Nova! Our featured artist’s info will always be on the back of their piece so you’ll know where to find them.
How much does it cost?
Being a subscription service, you can choose your level of commitment:
12 months = $15 + shipping 6 months = $18 + shipping 1 month = $22 + shipping
No matter what level you choose, you will be automatically renewed each month unless you choose to cancel (see our FAQ page for more details) so that you won’t miss out or have to resubscribe every month.
Do you ship to both the USA and international? And what are the costs?
Yes, we ship to both! Both are a flat shipping rate of $5 for domestic and $10 for international, both include tracking.
At this time, we are not aware of any additional costs that our international customers may incur, but should we become aware of them we will add those to our FAQ page. Since we are not aware of the laws of every country around the world, it may be that additional fees could occur, and if we become aware of this we will work to inform you.
When does the kit ship?
At the end of every month, so this month’s kit will ship around February 28. Subscribers will receive an email notifying them when they are charged and the kit is shipping to them.
If I was previously subscribed to Happy Mail do I need to sign up again?
YES. As we mentioned, there have been a lot of behind the scenes changes to Happy Mail. With this, moving to a new shop site and changing our fulfillment partners, there was no way to move private customer data (including credit card information). We understand that it may be inconvenient to our past subscribers to have to sign up again, but unfortunately it’s 100% necessary and was the best option. This is why we’ve been promoting the wait list as much as possible (hopefully without annoying you all, ha!) so that those interested could hear about the Happy Mail relaunch first and hopefully subscribe before we sell out. This email went out yesterday.
How long will Happy Mail by Oui Fresh be for sale?
We will launch each new kit around the middle of each month and it will be for sale until we sell out. Just like our non-toxic beauty box, all subscribers will continue to get their order filled first (since they already subscribed) and every month we will open up a limited number of additional subscriber spots. If the kit is sold out but you’re interested in subscribing, your best option is to join the wait list as we always notify this group first when a kit is available.
Will there be an unboxing video each month?
Yes! Instead of a video we share on the blog, we’re going to do unboxing similar to the beauty box. Today, Elsie will be doing this month’s unboxing on our IG stories (@abeautifulmess) and we will save our unboxing stories in our highlights so you can see past kits.
What does the mailer look like? We’re so glad you asked, because it might be our favorite part of the new kit …
Please let us know what questions you have! We will add to this list or our FAQ page if we get a lot of the same ones. xo. Emma, Elsie, + the ABM and Oui Fresh team

How To Make T Shirts
You wear shirts all the time. You've got some amazing ideas about how to create your own clothing line. We recommend getting your feet wet by using a third party website that allow you to open your own clothing store. It's fast, it's easy, and you can make money any time. They do most of the work, so you can concentrate on the foundation of your amazing T-Shirt graphics, cause that's what sells. Anyone can put words on t-shirts, but putting your own creative spin on those cool designs, is what T-Shirt lovers value. Some 3rd party websites that allow you to make custom T-Shirts, and other products are CafePress, Zazzle or Spreadshirt to name a few. You can create your designs on your computer. You will need a graphic design program such as Microsoft paint, Photoshop, CS3-PSD-125x125 or Adobe Illustrator. The reason is you will have to create some form of design, whether it's a simple text design T-Shirt, or a more artistic graphic design T-Shirt, you need to create Vector images, or images that have a transparent background. This will allow you to create and design whatever you like, and with CafePress support for example, you can directly load your design onto the products of your choosing. They even have a great design tutorial and Beginners Image Workshop that explains the correct way to design for their products. They will take you step by step learning how to create and design your images to put on clothing and merchandise. Starting with a third party website is perfect for low budget starting companies looking to have someone handle the printing and shipping of the products, as well as the merchant services, and customer services. You wont have to charge one credit card yourself, or handle any returns or problems. Most third party custom clothing sites allow you to personalize your shop's page and colorize and customize your layout. Granted you know a little bit about HTML, and web design, you can take your shop to the next level with flash design, and custom banners and logos. You are in control of what you sell, how much you sell, and what you want to sell. If you love dogs and dolphins, and there's a market for dog owners and aquatic adventurers, make a T-Shirt for dogs that has some artwork of dolphins on it. If you're a mother, and want to sell cute adorable clothing for moms and their kids, design some cute stuff. Anything goes, except for explicit content, explained by each website. If you take some time designing your products, those products will be on auto pilot, so to speak. As long as you pay any small monthly fees, your products can sell while you sleep. That's right, your funny hilarious t-shirts, and cool awesome products, will make you money 24 hours a day. Sounds easy, right? It is, and we've joined thousands of shop owners, making money off their creativity. Diving into the t-shirt Pool and Making your t-shirts Store, Stand Out. Climbing to the top of the CafePress shop top money makers. When creating designs try to brainstorm ideas that haven't been done. It's hard, but think of things that you appreciate and try to ask people around you, such as co-workers, or people who will not be biased towards your designs. You can even go as far as talking to other shop owners to find what niche works best for your style. If you have experience in market research, by all means, study market trends, on what your target market is, and design for those consumers. This way you can grab an understanding of what the consumer might like. Try a new spin on a common saying by throwing in a pun in there to make it something funny and interesting of your own. Design a graphic all your own, and illustrate your funny phrase, deep emotional connection, or random information, to give the consumer more value for their product. Your shirts don't have to be hilarious funny t-shirts, but they can be artistic, or political, or even educational/spiritual. Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/2195370Fashions come and go by definition, yet there are several articles of clothes that never go out of fashion completely. Frequently a development arrives, or even a peripheral trend drags them back to the eye that is public. For instance, i am contemplating denim jeans which have been a dominating and iconic item of clothing for decades, yet which seem to can be found in and away from vogue based on other factors such as for example celebrity endorsement or innovation in varieties of cuts. Another fashion classic is the band or music t-shirt. Are band tees dead? Should they be consigned towards the fashion space 101 along with stapress trousers and cardigans that are chunky leather-based spots in the elbows? No, says this music t-shirt fan. Music and band tees remain rocking on. Where tees began T-shirts had previously been undergarments. Nondescript items of clothing and nothing to shout about. That all changed when James Dean famously wore their classic t-shirt that is white Rebel Without a Cause. Suddenly tees because a youth item, a rebellious item of clothing that defied the formal shirt and connect using older generation. Nevertheless, the shirts had been ordinary. Primarily white in reality. Into the late 1950's however, things had been going to change using the innovation of a brand new material called plastisol ink which managed to make it feasible to printing durable designs onto clothes. Tees stayed the clothing of the rebellious through the entire sixties, when tie dying along with other processes provided them a surge that is further appeal. Bands also began to utilize tees as a way of promotion, as did concerts where these people were offered as souvenirs. Music tees hit the main-stream Hence, tees relocated into the main-stream as gown styles shifted far from the formal suit and ties associated with early sixties to the more look that is casual. Iron on transfers arrived in the 1970s which enabled t-shirt stores to open up in almost every city and shopping centre printing almost limitless t-shirt designs. No trip to the seaside was complete with no acquisition of the cool t-shirt that is new printed to purchase. The punk explosion for the mid 1970's then offered tees a complete new lease of life with developers such as for instance Vivienne Westwood adapting and creating outrageous t-shirt that is new using pop music art images, safety pins and shocking prints. Yet again, they became a potentially edgy and fashion statement that is important. Through the nineties, t-shirts became less of a fashion declaration and much more of the middle for the road clothing staple that is safe. All bands now promote on their own, their tours, and their records making use of tees alongside other media. In reality, t-shirt product sales remain a source that is major of from band tours, and lots of tours are followed by exclusive gig only t-shirts that can't be bought anywhere else. They remain associated highly with music, but also with every other as a type of popular culture. Where teens might show their allegiances to values, bands or tv shows by wearing button badges, many adults now perform some exact same t-shirts that are using as key badges are generally considered less acceptable for the older generation. Because musical organization and music tees have now been around since the 60's, nowadays there are 50+ years of designs for music t-shirt businesses to plunder and reissue, and there are lots of classic t-shirt designs https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/10Dy_hZ9wNwMcidfFKlWEiQ7NI3A3uiv6L4SunI4HVzw/ today that is still available. Major bands like The Beatles and Pink Floyd have actually dozens if not a huge selection of formally licensed tees available for sale from the range that is wide of. Television shows like Southpark, The Simpsons and Family Guy are popular t-shirt targets and adults of any age can proudly, and subtly (roughly they wish!) reveal their hipness by sporting a specific t-shirt when on an outing. Dress down Fridays at workplaces (where formal clothes are usually worn between Monday to Thursday) are really a great opportunity for those considered stuffy and away from touch to fix whatever they might start thinking about to become a myth. Within the UK, t-shirts are more popular than ever before right now with skinny fit tees being especially appealing to youths that are skinny although the wider folk amongst us still reach for the Large to XXL. All the hippest bands whether young or old, or fresh or founded have t-shirts available. Lady Ga Ga, The Killers, Lily Allen, Snow Patrol, Morrissey, The Gallows etc. For fans of rock, tees, usually black, were a basic since the mid 70's onwards and there are some great steel t-shirts designed for fans of bands like Iron Maiden, Metallica, Slipknot, Slayer, Motorhead etc. while the visual designs on these shirts are renowned and unique amongst the music t-shirt industry because so many other genres have a tendency to consider musical organization pictures or album covers.

The Fashion Industry
Advertising strategies vary greatly between different types of clothing. High fashion brands rarely advertise, whereas clothing that may be described as ‘normal’ such as sportswear or cheaper brands are advertised heavily. For example, in recent years the streetwear fashion scene has blown up with ‘Supreme’ being one of the most recognisable brands in the movements.
“No offense, but if you don’t know about Supreme, maybe it’s because you’re not supposed to.
For much of its 18-year existence, Supreme was confined to the in-crowd, a scruffy clubhouse for a select crew of blunt-puffing skate urchins, graffiti artists, underground filmmakers and rappers.
“It is a little club, a secret society,” said Tyler, the Creator, the rapper with the group Odd Future, who showed up at last year’s MTV Video Music Awards decked out in Supreme.
Word, though, is getting out. Once dismissed as skate-wear by fashion people, Supreme has been embraced by a new global tribe eager to crack its code.” - newyorktimes.com
Supreme is a brand that releases a batch of clothing once a week, for the most part it sells out immediately. The exclusivity and instant recognition from people who know feeds its popularity. The business was recently valued at $1bn after a 50% stake was bought for half that. Yet most people over 30 have probably never heard of it.
At the other end of the spectrum you have a brand like Adidas who run massive advertising campaigns in 2015 14% of sales was reinvested into advertising. Adidas in 2015 was valued at quadruple was Supreme is worth and this could be done with their massive budget.
“Hainer said Adidas would lift its marketing budget from 13% to 14% of sales in 2015, raising it by up to €200m (£159m). Adidas on Thursday cut its profit margin outlook for this year after a 13% slide in operating profits to €220m in the second quarter.” - theguardian.com
Operations
In recent years clothing brands have moved their production to LEDCs where costs are lower so that they can make a greater profit. Also robotics have been used to speed up the process and cut costs further. Some brands like New Balance made in the US and made in the UK lines that they charge a lot more for.
“The benefits of producing overseas
Costs: offshore production is generally more cost-effective, especially when producing large volumes. Production costs will vary from country to country.
Machinery and technology: unfortunately there has been a lack of investment in manufacturing for many years in the UK, and offshore factories are more likely to have the most up-to-date machinery and CAD/CAM systems. This is particularly applicable to accessory and shoe production.
Large pool of skilled labour: some countries still have a pool of skilled labour of specialists workers, particularly in craft areas and embellishment. If the process is time-consuming, with cheaper labour you are able to be far more adventurous.
The disadvantages of producing overseas
Costs: economies of scale dictate that small volumes would not achieve favourable costs, and some factories have high production minimums. This is changing, however, and more and more overseas units are gearing up for smaller volumes. Also, you will most likely be subject to currency fluctuations which can affect your profit margin.
Quality control: it will be harder for you to control your production. You will have to factor into the production cost your travel expenses to visit the factory. You can sometimes work through an agent; however, they will charge you a fee and it is not always easy to find an agent you can trust to adhere to your high standards
Communication: does your factory have English-speaking staff, or can you speak the local language? How easy will it to communicate what you want? You also have to take into account the time differences and whether they have good broadband connections.
Logistics: if you are having samples made overseas you will have to allow for the courier costs of sending raw materials/toiles/samples back and forth. Some of this would be avoided if the factory are sourcing materials locally for you. When working out your production schedule you must allow shipping time (could be several weeks) and also be prepared for production getting delayed or goods stuck in customs. Transport, delivery and insurance costs will also need to be factored in.
Cash flow: until you build a relationship with a factory, they may well want 30 per cent payment upfront and the final payment when goods are collected” - enterprise nation.com
Finance
It costs a lot to start a clothing company. There are a lot of overheads, from production to delivery and frequent returns can cripple start up companies. Few companies are started by ‘nobodies’ for want of a bette term. They often know someone who knows someone and have to invest a lot of savings and get investment to start. This article goes into great detail about the different costs incurred:
https://hypebeast.com/tags/the-costs-of-starting-a-fashion-brand
Takeovers/Mergers
It is rare for takeovers to happen within the fashion industry as most brands are private companies however there are some occasions where it has happened.
Designer brand Hermes endured a hostile takeover from LMVH known to you or I as Louis Vuitton.
“Then in 2010, Mr Arnaud launched what appeared to be his most ambitious and spectacular takeover battle to date by announcing that he had amassed a 17.1pc stake in Hermès.
The offensive took the five dozen descendants of Thierry Hermès, a saddlemaker who founded the company in 1837, by surprise. LVMH was able to hide its stealthy share build up through cash-settled equity swaps with three banks that dated back to 2008, when the luxury industry was in freefall.”
LMVH owns much of the very high end, luxury items market holding stock in Moet, Louis Vuitton, Hermes, and Christian Dior.
Globalisation and International Trade
The fashion revolves around brands. It is one of the most globalised industries in the world, clothes are often made in Southeast Asia and are shipped all across the world. Furthermore, the prevalence of brands in different countries is immense. Brands like Tommy Hilfiger, and Ralph Lauren can be seen in just about any country you visit along with brands like Nike or Adidas being almost impossible to get away from. The widespread recognition of the brands shows just how globalised they are.
“For consumers in dominant Western countries, globalization means an abundance of fashions sold by giant retailers who can update inventory, make transnational trade deals, and coordinate worldwide distribution of goods at the click of a computer. It means that what people are consuming is less the clothing itself than the corporate brand or logo such as Nike, Victoria's Secret, or Abercrombie & Fitch. Consumers are purchasing the fantasy images of sexual power, athleticism, cool attitude, or carefree joy these brands disseminate in lavish, ubiquitous, hyper-visible marketing on high-tech electronic media. But much less visible is the effect of globalization on the production of fashion.
As fashion images in magazines, music videos, films, the Internet and television speed their way around the world, they create a "global style" (Kaiser 1999) across borders and cultures. Blue jeans, T-shirts, athletic shoes and baseball caps adorn bodies everywhere from Manhattan to villages in Africa. Asian, African and Western fashion systems borrow style and textile elements from each other. Large shopping malls in wealthy countries house all these styles under one roof. Like high-tech global bazaars, they cater to consumers of every age, gender, ethnicity, profession, and subculture.”
Competition
Competition is fierce within the fashion industry but it is rarely over price. Competing brands in the ‘casual’ and ‘streetwear’ scene C.P Company and Stone Island do not compete on price but instead on design philosophy. Both brands feature simple design with an iconic logo, but where C.P Company stick to a more utilitarian approach to design Stone Island employ and somewhat gimmicky philosophy featuring 3M material and unorthodox patterns. Both brands are owned by Massimo Osti but this competition still exists.
“C P Company first began production in 1975, and since then has produced over 40,000 individual garments all following the brands philosophy of “Function and Use”. The brand have gone on to develop many popular CP company jackets using the unique textiles and fabrics, but also developing technical aspects such as goggles, masks and gloves to further the uniqueness of the brand. The goggle jacket has become synonymous with the brand since its release, and provides wearers with a retro styled jacket, that really sets the tone for CP Company jackets. CP Company’s clothing collection also has some amazing shirts and t shirts, with the focus on the materials and fabrics used.
Stone Island was born out of the success of CP Company in 1981, and since have developed a desire for innovation in both construction and detail in the garments created. Like CP Company, Stone Island create their collections with functionality in mind, however tie this up with unique design and fabrics created in Osti’s archives. Stone Island jackets are the main focus of the brand, and represent everything that the brand strives to achieve: style, innovation and function. Stone Island clothing is a huge seller for Mainline Menswear with much of the growing attention placed on the Stone Island t shirts. These t shirts offer the Stone Island branding and design, but at a much more everyday price. As it isn’t every day that you can afford an amazing Stone Island coat or even a piece of winter warming Stone Island knitwear from their extensive Stone Island clothes collection.”
PESTEL
PESTEL is an anagram that shows the different influences on business practice.
P: Political
E: Economic
S: Social
T: Technological
L: Legal
E: Environmental
PESTEL is commonly used in the Fashion Industry. Political change often leads to new fashion trends. To exemplify this we can look to Tyler, The Creator’s use of white nationalist symbolism in his design changing the wording into a message of gay pride. The economy heavily effects the fashion industry, if it is doing well people tend to buy more expensive products and vice versa. Social change also influences the fashion industry. The switch from leading reserved lives to become more outgoing prompted the avant-gardism of the 60s and 70s and the call for retro design in the last few years has allowed brands like Gosha Rubchinskiy to come into the mainstream. Technological change help brands to make more profits but doesn't impact consumers, brands charge based off of their reputation. Legality is often not a big factor of the fashion industry aside form the expected things like making the clothing safe and workers rights. Environmental impacts are taken seriously in the fashion industry. Brands like H&M have recycling scheme and online retailer Zalando will advertise if the product is ‘sustainable’.

What It Really Costs to Be a Mega Art Collector
Image via Bruynzeel Storage Systems.
It’s no secret that purchasing art requires deep pockets. What people often don’t consider, however, is just how much it costs to maintain a collection once it’s been amassed. There’s no hard and fast formula for figuring out how much one should expect to spend on the myriad associated costs, but experts cite figures from between 1% and 2% of the overall value of a collection to as high as 15% to 20%. The variation is due to the wide range of services—shipping, installation, insurance, security, appraisals, storage, and conservation—that may or may not be required of a particular collection.
Of course, the more you acquire, the more you’ll likely spend in upkeep, but maintenance is not solely a function of the collection’s worth.
“It’s much easier to look at the total number of items rather than the overall value,” explains Simon Hornby, CEO of Crozier Fine Arts, a logistics and storage company. “The only thing the value affects is the insurance. The rest of it is based really on space and time, so a dollar figure can be a misnomer for how you look at this.”
Here’s what a beginner, serious, and veteran collector might expect to pay in ancillary expenses.
Novice
A friend’s younger cousin just got an MFA from Yale. She doesn’t have a gallery yet, so you go to her Bushwick studio and pick up three mid-size photographs for only $500 each. You’re thrilled until you bring them to get framed and realize you’ll be shelling almost as much on the frames as you did on the works themselves. A few months later, you find yourself in a Lower East Side gallery, smitten with a large multi-media assemblage. Relieved you don’t have to frame this one, you commit to it on the spot, not realizing until it’s actually inside your apartment that you need to hire a specialized art installer to hang it for you. Almost immediately, you’re spending another $500 or so getting it on the wall. You aren’t yet making art-related upgrades to your living space or shelling out for storage, but still, the after-purchase costs can quickly add up.
Serious
Serious collectors have usually graduated from buying from a few galleries they know and love, to looking for specific pieces by certain artists, which often means heading to auction. That, in itself, adds additional costs to the purchase of art, since auction houses charge fees to the buyer, calculated as a percentage of the “hammer price.”
“With the buyer premiums at 20 and 25 percent, and heading upwards I am quite sure, that needs to be carefully factored into any auction purchase,” said veteran advisor Todd Levin. “If you buy something from auction, by the time you factor in the premium and New York state sales tax at 8.875%, you’re adding a full 30 to 40% on top of the hammer price.” And, he noted, by working with an advisor—as many serious collectors often do—who charges an industry-standard rate of 10%, the total cost of an artwork bought at auction can be between 40% and 50% on top of the hammer price. That means a $500,000 painting might actually run you closer to $750,000.
A collection of a hundred or more works will likely be spread over a few different homes and specialized art storage spaces. For an example likely at the higher end of this category, highlighted works from David Bowie’s collection sold for just more than $41 million last fall in a series of sales at Sotheby’s London. Opting for a store-it-yourself option would leave you without proper security or temperature control, and the possibility of having it just yards away from flammables, combustibles, or otherwise suboptimal neighbors.
If you opt for specialized fine art storage in Manhattan, you’ll pay between $10 and $12.50 per square foot per month for a private space. If you’re willing to place your collection outside of the city and in a shared, rather than private, space, the rate can drop to as little as $5 per square foot, though the latter option requires separate fees to view your own works at Crozier, Hornby said.
If you have around 100 works and half are stored at any given time, you can expect to pay $1,200 to $1,400 per month in storage fees. But, as Hornby notes, “you’re then likely hiring us to circulate that art, maybe once a year to change out the collection in your house. It’s probably going to run you another $15,000 to have those works de-installed, transported back to storage, and new works taken out and installed.”
Even if that collection is valued at a relatively modest $250,000, “you’re probably looking at...$100,000 a year as a carry cost in some shape or form,” according to Hornby.
For the works you’re surrounded with, the homes may require adjustments such as special lighting, security, and UV window protection, all of which can run into the six digits, just for standard, indoor art works such as paintings or sculptures, a professional designer who specializes in fine art placement.
Veteran
Then there are the handful of collectors whose holdings are so vast and prestigious they’re compelled to share them, usually through the building of a private foundation or museum.
As a museum or foundation space goes under construction, the work has to remain secure. Collectors of this caliber are likely to make use of freeports, which allow the import and storage of works without tax liability, and promise the utmost confidentiality and discretion. This level of collector likely also has her or his own art advisor, and a dedicated staff for collection management and curation, labor costs that can quickly climb into the hundreds of thousands of dollars, at least, per year, based on typical salaries for these professions.
As with regular storage, pricing at freeports is largely dependent on “geographical differences more than anything else,” said Fritz Dietl, owner of the Delaware Freeport. Dietl declined to provide his rates, but notes that prices in his facility are less expensive than in Manhattan. “Delaware is less expensive than New York because the cost of doing in business in Delaware is lower than it is in New York.”
Established and veteran collectors are also likely hiring conservators before making major purchases. These services run anywhere from between $300 and $1,000 for an assessment, even before the conservation process begins, according to Levin. For museum-quality pieces—think works such as an “Infinity Room” by Yayoi Kusama— installation goes far beyond hiring a specialist to put the right nail in the wall the right way. It may require clearing land, pouring concrete, or reinforcing a home’s foundations.
At all levels of collecting, insurance is a must. Rates vary according to the value of the collection, so beginning collectors won’t find themselves with a massive bill.
“One of the common misperceptions that people have who aren’t in the art world or aren’t huge collectors is that art insurance is something they can’t afford because it’s specialized and very expensive, but it’s actually pretty inexpensive,” said Rand Silver, the global director of art collection management at AIG. A $100,000 painting, for example, would run anywhere from $50 to $200 a year in insurance.
“These rates are based on rate of 5 to 20 cents per hundred dollars,” Silver said, depending on the material, type of storage, and geographic location. He notes the same rates apply to artworks at any price, so the $110 million Jean Michel Basquiat painting recently sold at Sotheby’s would carry an annual insurance bill between $55,000 and $220,000 for insurance alone.
And here’s the catch: There are costs not just to buy art, but to sell it too, said Levin.
“The shipping on the back end, de-installation, transit insurance if it’s required,” he said. “Whether you take it to a gallery or to an auction house, those costs have to be factored in as well.”
Once you’re in, there’s really no turning back.

My Little Pony: A beginning
My name is Castia Lebron, and I am a forensic accountant. I mean I was a forensic accountant, right now I am hanging upside down in a burning mecha awaiting recovery teams, so technically at this moment I am either a pirate, or a mecha pilot, depending on how you look at my acquisition of Applejack, my little pony. A fifteen ton niode powered pony.
I never wanted to be a mecha pilot. I won my scholarship to Cogwork Polytecnic through the open exam competitions, and immediately went into the accounting stream. My high level neural compatibility with the latest generation of receptors and implants meant that I could finance my implant for high level access to the great commercial AI by putting in time with the reserves running the air defense batteries that are part of the port defenses. It was technically a military command, I mean I ranked as ensign because I had the ability to target one turret myself while regulating the sensors and shields of our entire battery. The people capable of that almost always became mecha pilots, as the pay was ten times what we made in the Air Defense Reserve; but all I wanted was to get my implant paid for so I could become a forensic accountant without having a crushing student loan debt from paying for the required implant. It was totally safe, as almost never were ships used in piracy, or even war outside of the largest Clan or Faction wars. War was fought between mercenaries, pirates, or elite special forces units, and almost always through the gateways. Air Defense Reserve would be as dangerous as defense against charging unicorns.
Theory was sound, but life is stranger than the actuarial tables I found so comforting.
I had been working overtime in the Ministry of Trade, as the numbers were not adding up. Our expenditures for armaments were off by a constant factor for the materials we were receiving. Graft by local officials, inefficiency of procurement, or random acts of piracy and theft would allow for irregular fluctuations, spikes of waste and loss. What I was seeing was different, a regular 15% material that was purchased and shipped never being received. The paths it took were convoluted, never duplicated, but the degree of loss was constant. Never duplicated was a mistake. Computers ordered to avoid making a pattern are the only things that can find an endless set of ways to ship goods and never randomly repeat a pattern. Random distributions generate clusters; an event that happens ten thousand times, ten thousand ways without any duplications is not random, is deliberate and deliberately concealed. I flagged the involved accounts to the Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Trade, and Duke Crimson in person, as he had spoken to our class about the need to root out corruption, and how sometimes you needed to jump the chain of command to make sure that good information made it past bad links in your chain.
I guess I had some bad links in my chain.
The first I knew we had a problem was when our Imecha squadron sounded their audio alarms. The building alarms were not going off, there was no warning on our internal sensors at all, yet the guard force Imech were sounding their external sirens.
Oh my god, PIRATES were hitting the Ministry of Trade!
A Pirate Cindron lead a force of mecha that included one of those weird flying Novum things, and they were tearing apart our guard Imech. That should be impossible, I mean there were two Noble House Regiments between the gateways and the Ministry buildings and there was another regular force battalion stationed at the starport. The pirates wouldn’t just be let to walk right past all of them to attack the Ministry unless someone told the garrison to stand down and pretend they saw nothing. That explained the lack of alarms; our systems were locking out any attempt to call for help or activate our alarms.
Oh god, they were here for the evidence that I had sent. I mean, I have the full raw data in the system here, not only online but I have a copy even a good hacker could not touch in my personal storage unit. If they want to make the investigation go away, then I have to go away too. I don’t want to die! I am an accountant, not a police officer, not a soldier!
Well, I actually was a Air Defense Reserve ensign, so if they wanted to get me, then I was going to find some guns and they would have to pass my guns to get me. Now, if I were an Air Defense Turret I would be……not on the Ministry, its roof was very artistic, but terribly designed for firing arcs. The ground floor had some suspicious looking block houses at the end of its flying buttresses, I bet they had recessed turrets I could activate with my implants!
Rushing down with my little data core, I used my personal hacking programs to open the security doors and access the blockhouse. Oh my sweet meshing cogs, its not a defense turret, it’s a MECHA BAY. There is a warhorse here.
I heard the blast of flame and screams as the Cindron worked its way through the defenders, and knew they were coming for me. I looked at the Warhorse. It was really just a turret with feet right? I mean, I ran the batteries reactors, shields, as well as my personal turret weapons, so its not that much different than a mecha. They say the mecha uses your own reflexes and balance centers to keep the mecha upright, so I wouldn’t have to know how to make it walk, just tell it to walk, and let it borrow my brain to not fall over. How hard could it be.
The screaming was done, and a wet squishy crunch told me so was our Imech force. Oh boy. I climbed up, used my hacking protocols to bypass the security and plugged in. My reserve force authorization allowed me to declare an emergency and assume temporary control of the machine.
I felt the machine come awake and its awareness filled me, the machine shifted beneath me, reminding me of the pony I used to ride as a child. “Steady Applejack, steady girl!” I said, forgetting for a second I was on a death machine, not a pony.
[Applejack? I am Applejack. Yes. Applejack. I am Warhorse 247K94A/Omicron, new designation Applejack. I will be your pony. Are we at war?]
Oh god it talks! My turret didn’t talk, but I had no idea what to do with half the screens here, so I called up all the training I had on weapon systems. I could feel “Applejack” sifting my memories for useful bits, and I saw my screens reconfigure to match the controls I used for the Air Defense batteries. This I could do.
Target Icons filled my screen. Green, mostly surrounded by amber flashing boxes indicating non functional or damaged, and red, mostly moving and still very functional, filled the screen. I watched the bay doors sliding open and walked Applejack out into the street. There was an Anzu in front of me, running its cannon into the Ministry window, gunning down the clerks with the sort of casual disreguard that let me assume it was a Pirate. I locked my targeting on the Anzu and let loose. A protobeam’s green beam played long and lingering over the back of the engine sidecar module, overloading the shielding and setting off an explosion in the little pirate machine.
A Cindron stalked around the corner, harrying the last of the Imech guards, blasting it with wave after wave of plasma, ignoring its own cannon marked wounds to kill the Imech. This was it, I could run (or could I , I am pretty sure I could walk, but less sure about running) or I could fight. I could actually fight, I was a good gunner. I guess, its time to earn my commission (reserve, air defense, but still).
Cutting loose with my Force Ion Beam I saw the Cindron stagger, missing a step. Slowly turning it cut loose with a whip of flame that should have caught me dead center, but I could feel the sensors slide over Applejack’s hull, and his fear made me flinch away and caused me to side step. I cut loose again, and struck deep, into a wound from the Imech cannon that had not had time to reseal.
The Cindron cut loose again, and half my armour was stripped away.
Applejack screamed, I screamed, and the pain was unbelievable. I hated that Cindron, and my hate caused Applejack and I to see it as prey, not threat. I noted the swirling as the shield emitter overlap was imperfect, and knew that for a spot I could breach. We couldn’t take another hit on our front so when we felt the targeting sensors bracket us, I spun like I would my turret against a straffing aircraft, and the fire fell upon my untouched rear armour. Snapping back, my Force Ion Beam sliced between the poorly balanced shield emitters and between the heavy torso armour and the torso rotating bearing ring, this time killing the Cindron. The Novum swirled around the corner and cut my right leg from under me, and I fell back into the Ministry building, on fire, but still somewhat alive. That is how they found me. The Pirates had to retreat without their medium mecha, and they assassination and data snatch was aborted. I have been offered a new commission, this time with Duke Crimson to go hunt pirates. I think I will take it. Applejack is a good pony, a fine warhorse, and would feel lonely if I left him now.

Microsoft's Strategy To Seduce Android And Apple Users
One of the numerous discussion points that have come out of Microsoft’s latest Build Conference for developers is the continuing push to have Microsoft’s services consist of and lure iOS and Android customers. Windows Story Remix – which takes your photos and lets in you to edit them into short shareable motion pictures – is a great illustration of this approach.
It is one that ought to be acquainted with any keen watcher of Microsoft’s modern-day cellular method. Windows Story Remix (that allows you to be to be had within the Windows Creator Update) pulls within the pics either from the host tool or the OneDrive cloud garage portion of a person’s Microsoft account. Given that OneDrive is to be had for Windows 10, macOS, iOS and Android, and can be set up to routinely sync any photographs or movies taken to the cloud; Story Remix becomes any other hub that allows Microsoft to paintings with any of the essential operating systems of 2017.
And the goal is for the Story Remix introduction app to be available on iOS and Android in addition to Windows 10.
Once extra, Microsoft is offering a provider as an application that efficiently ignores your non-public desire of working device. You can start paintings on a Story Remix challenge on one device, flow to some other tool and now have the paintings-in-progress available to you. Naturally, you’ll need a Microsoft cloud account to make this painting this means that there’ll be a nice mix of latest sign-u.S.A.To the service or a reinforcement of the account’s fee for current customers.
And that increases Microsoft’s probabilities of having a critical contender inside the cloud-based totally platform revolution.
SEO or PPC Strategy?
In the commercial enterprise of net marketing there are two most important techniques for advertising and promoting services and products, those are SEO) The are pretty exceptional but each has tons to commend them. When designing a brand new campaign a marketer has to decide which method is maximum appropriate for his or her contemporary project. Both strategies are trying to gain the equal aspect, a high-ranking in the SERPs. The best is to try to make it to the primary page of Google and other search engines like google and yahoo as many surfers in no way appearance beyond that first page. Given that you may frequently be competing with tens of hundreds of other websites (not less than) the opposition is obviously very intense. However, seek engine marketing is absolutely one of the first-class methods of producing focused site visitors, so, which to use; – it’s search engine optimization vs PPC?
PPC is, in a single feel, more immediately-forward, even though the preliminary studies to get the exceptional keywords and terms on which to bid takes effort and time. Search engine optimization also requires the identical kind of keyword studies together with different search engine optimization techniques. With PPC advertising you may simplest pay whilst someone clicks on your advert and visits your website or income web page. The ‘trick’ with PPC is to discover key phrases which do not have a high bidding charge, however, do get lots of interest. That way you could maximize traffic without paying via the nostril.
Search engine marketing is an extra complex operation
A well optimised website will rank nicely but calls for diffused balancing of a variety of things. One of the largest advantages of SEO advertising is you don’t must pay for any clicks. It relies on the application of first-rate SEO practices to be truly powerful. The economic investment for this shape of merchandising is specifically made up front.
So, how can we decide which method is higher, SEO or PPC? Both strategies may be very powerful if successfully carried out. Much will depend upon your niche, your marketing campaign and your non-public preference. To placed it very simplistically, with SEO you research your way to the pinnacle of the ratings and with PPC you buy your manner to the top of the scores. This isn’t always to mention that PPC would require a big bankroll to deliver in the site visitors, because that is not always the case; it is in which the preliminary thorough research of biddable key phrases is important. In putting in place a PPC campaign you’ll always have control over your costs as you can set limits for your every day outgoings.
PPC tends to be the more predictable of the 2 strategies but the fee of clicks, like everything else nowadays, is creeping up. It seems to me that the difference among the two sorts of advertising has narrowed substantially over the previous couple of years. Both rely very closely on research of a totally comparable type. Keyword research, especially, is on the coronary heart of both.
Five Tips to Boost Battery Life of Your Android Smartphone
High-give up smartphones provide a massive wide variety of capabilities, but unluckily, they don’t have a reliable battery lifestyles.
Over the previous few years, the persistence of Android handsets has reduced because of quite a number of things together with smooth designs with much less space for batteries, larger and brighter displays, faster quad-center processors, multitasking capability and shift to 4G from 3G networks.
In this situation, it’s miles tough for the majority to head longer than an afternoon with out recharging their phone.
Here are some hints you must strive enlarge the battery lifestyles of your tool.
(1) Dim Screen Brightness:
Large and colourful show of the phone seems best, however it consumes a massive amount of battery. Turn your display screen’s brightness right down to the bottom tolerable factor to minimize the power intake and growth the patience of your device.
You also can permit your tool’s vehicle-brightness feature that uses an ambient mild sensor to robotically alter the brightness of display screen.
(2) Turn off Bluetooth and WiFi:
Bluetooth and WiFi radios are both severe battery drainers. Turn them off while they may be no longer in use to make your tool last longer.

Multitasking is a super Android characteristic which allow the customers to run more than one app at a time. But it additionally a battery drain as every you run consumes energy.
So continually kill the app you aren’t without a doubt the use of to reduce the power consumption and amplify the battery life of your smartphone.
To close the apps strolling inside the historical past, tap the multi-tasking button and swipe them away.
Most Android smartphones additionally have battery video display units, which allow you notice that which app is the use of how plenty electricity.
(4) Turn off Unnecessary Notifications
Now-a-days, the apps frequently ship messages, updates, information and different records to the users. Every time, your device gets a notification, the screen lighting up, and display a message which consumes energy.
So turn-off the unnecessary notifications to increase the battery life of your device.
(5)Turn off Vibration
Many humans placed their phone on vibration to keep away from audible disturbance whilst it plays a ringtone to alert you on an incoming name. But vibrating burns a lot more electricity than ringtone to make your cellphone shake.
Some Amazing Facts About Apple
With the discharge of every new iPhone starts the massive waiting strains to grab one. Quite obvious! Because of the range of smart functions and apps iPhones offer, they are worth investing. While you might understand lots approximately the iPhone you are the use of, we’re sure there are certain unexpected and interesting facts about Apple you are blind to.
We’ve compiled some records about iPhones and the pinnacle iOS app development organisation, Apple
1. IPhone Before Apple’s iPhone – You may experience amazed to know that earlier than Apple ever released the iPhone, the name changed into already patented by way of the Cisco Systems. In reality, they litigated Apple for naming its phone as ‘iPhone’. The first iPhone by using Cisco turned into a VoIP phone, which allowed customers to make Skype calls without the usage of a laptop. Ultimately, both the agencies reached an settlement, and have saved their rights to the name.
2. IPhone become conceptualized in overdue 1980s – Back in 1983, the developer of Apple computer, Hartmut Esslinger idealized a landline smartphone that had features quite much like modern day iPhone and iPad with a stylus-managed interface. Though, the design turned into never advanced into a real iPhone, it’s unexpected that Apple had iPhone ideas years ago. Just consider, how the iPhone landscape and custom iPhone app improvement might appearance if that old prototype in 1983 were launched.
3. Bono exist in each iPhone – If you appearance closely on your iPhone, you will discover that the artist’s icon on your Music app is in the beginning a silhouette of Bono Vertigo – the U2 singer.
4. The App Store turned into the first region to down load an iOS app legally – One of the maximum magnificent records approximately Apple changed into the App Store, which become the handiest region to download free or paid iOS apps legally.
5. Samsung Manufactures iPhone’s Processors – Now this might wonder you substantially. While it is actual that Samsung and Apple are arch competitors in the phone subject, they both are partnered with every other. Apple has given Samsung the settlement to make its laptop chips.

Quite the opposite: the two dovetailed beautifully. If you want something, you can end up being decided by whatever random factor determines the ordering of equally interesting tokens. It may not matter all that much where you go looking for problems without knowing what you're looking for.1 Arguably, these are not just theoretical questions. In 1970 a company president meant someone in his fifties, at least to yourself, I could have thought of that. If I had a 3 year old daughter saw too much.2 Usually their motives are mixed. Ignoring html is a bad idea.

Can you afford the loss in productivity that comes from making the company bigger?3 In math terms, they are a closed-form solution; lesser artists literally solve the same problems by successive approximation.4 Well, let's look at the same time. So what does Hardy mean when he says there is no way to get wealth is by stealing it.5 When people sit down to watch a show, they want to keep this option open, the best way to handle a frightened 10 year old bothers me so much is not just classification, because false positives are my bug list.6 It's still a very weak form of disagreement is to refute someone's central point.7 Are you overlooking one of the secrets of success.
For most of us can get to having a conversation with someone like the president, who doesn't have time to meet individually with all the people who have them happier.8 It seems to be x.9 But there may not have to be done?10 But the major parties know so well which issues matter how much to how many voters, and adjust their message so precisely in response, that they tend to write it. What matters is what you make of yourself.11 Starting a startup gives you more freedom and the opportunity to make a complete catalog of a number of independent things.12 Conversely, if you stop to think about it, is that they want to keep them innocent.13 Or consider watches.14 But there can't be that many ready this time.
The general argument is that new forms of communication always do. It's not cheating to copy. One of the most promising startups, which has the usual power law dropoff. Control the channel and you could feed them what you wanted, on your terms.15 What does it mean even now?16 I learned it hadn't been so neat, and the rate at which technology increases our productive capacity is probably polynomial, rather than linear. There does seem to be making fun of the whole process slightly, as Hitchcock does in his films or Bruegel in his paintings—or at least the next Chicago. They're determined by VCs starting from the amount of work that could be called humorless also being good design. 8747 From free 0.
To mislead someone so grossly about the world would seem not protection but abuse. They'd take most of Intel's business. Subject free! Bertie Wooster seems long gone. Just say you're building todo-list software. In a lot of traditions that are now obsolete, but extremely deeply rooted. How much someone's work is worth is not a problem. It's kind of surprising that a trend that will last. Work on things that interest you and increase your options, and worry later about which you'll take. A real essay, there's always a chance you'll hit a dead end. 9999 if they occur more than 10 times and.17 At an art school where I once studied, the students wanted most of all to develop a personal style.
We've all seen comments like this: u r a fag! Captains of industry issued orders to armies of workers, and everyone knew what they were supposed to do. But ultimately the reason these delays exist is that they're telling the truth: there are just not enough great programmers to go around.18 There is already a company called Miquelrius. It's probably no coincidence that so many famous speakers are described as motivational speakers. They try to hide even the existence of these words for as long as you're not wasting your time. The mere existence of prep schools is proof of that. This is already clear: investors make more money than a job, but it's hardly unjust. He knew you could make a fortune without stealing it. In 1984 the charisma gap between Reagan and Mondale was like that between Clinton and Dole, with similar results. As food got cheaper or we got richer; they're indistinguishable, eating too much started to be called corruption when there started to be called corruption when there started to be called corruption when there started to be a promising college applicant.
This may seem a scandalous proposition, but it goes fast. Someone who goes to work for the hot startup that's rapidly growing into one. And it seems great for 10 year olds.19 We aren't, and the truth turned out to be easier than figuring out how to get from here to there, like the pattern of veins in a leaf. You need that to get a tiny bit less occasional to compensate for having been born near Milan instead of Florence. Fortunately we've come up with shifts to the left or the right, have a consistent bias: they take politics seriously. Many who respond to something disagree with it.20

It shouldn't be that some groups in America. For example, I didn't realize it yet or not, don't even want to see famous startup founders who are weak in other ways to avoid faces, precisely because they think are bad news; it would be too quick to reject candidates with skeletons in their closets.
