Half pinned beneath a large chunk of earth, Zane tried to remain calm.

It was lucky his nerve-circuits shut off after a certain level, or else he would have been in severe pain. Alarms popped up in front of his eyes. Severed sensors. Impeded gears. Skin integrity at 20%.

The cave in had happened without warning.

Well, upon inspection of his recent recorded memories, maybe there had been some warning signs. Not that Zane and Kai had noticed, as they'd been too busy discussing how to get the Geckles to actually team up with the Munce.

Wait, Kai...

"K-Kai-i-i?" Zane called. Another warning popped up indicating the obvious: vocalizing systems damaged.

Zane swallowed down his panic as the list of known injuries and malfunctions grew. They were under a mountain. With no tools to repair him. No materials to repair him.

Why did these things always happen to him?

"Zane!" Kai's voice bounced off of the rocks from everywhere.

The Nindroid shifted. The horrible sound of stone against metal met his ears. Hm. Maybe it was not so lucky that he couldn't feel anything.

A different type of red filled his vision. Not the terrifying red blaring WARNING. WARNING. WARNING. A familiar, comforting red. Warm, fierce, protective red.

Kai.

Luckily, the worst of Kai's injuries seemed to be a slight limp in his left leg and the dried blood under his nose.

"A-a-ahhh," Zane struggled. "Glad-d yo-ou're ok-k-k-k--"

The red ninja's face twisted as if he were the one being crushed beneath approximately half a ton of earth. "That's not good."

"I w-would much ra-a-ather it be m-me tha-an you." Zane's mouth tasted like angry TV static. It was good Zane didn't technically need to breathe because he was pretty sure human lungs would not have been functioning in this situation. Still, the sensation of having his chest crushed was not great. "I-I am... st-tist-c-ically the bet-t-tt-t--"

"Nope, no, none of that!" Kai snapped. He was doing something with the rocks. Surely didn't Kai realize that Zane was stuck, stuck? "Just stop. Stop talking like that. You're not expendable, you're not a walking sacrifice, you're not going to die. You're gonna be FINE, Zane. I promise."

Zane winced as more harsh scraping filled his ears. His head vibrated with the movement of the stones.

He opened his mouth to warn Kai that his vision was only filling with more and more and more warnings but nothing came out. Kai himself kept glitching in and out of focus.

As Zane opened his mouth, the only thing that came out was a high pitched whine.

Kai froze, then started tugging on the rocks with renewed vigor. "You're not getting taken out by a stupid boulder, Buddy," he growled. "That's just not-- just not fair!"

"s-s-s--ns-s-se wh-e-e-en.... ever-r-r-r... f-f-fai-r-r-r.....?" Systems powering down.

It was going to be fine. Zane was going to be fine. Kai would make sure Zane was fine.

...the rocks weren't so bad when they were entirely out of focus. The edges were soft. Soft like a bed for him to snuggle into. He was already tucked in, wasn't he? Exhaustion pulled him further into the welcoming earth.

"Zane?! Cut it out, buddy! Wake up. You wake back up right now, you jerk or- or I'm telling Pixel! Zane? Zane!!"

He always came back. The universe had decided a long time ago that Zane wasn't allowed to die.

More importantly, Kai had decided a long time ago that Zane wasn't allowed to die.

Kai has been a lot kinder to him than the universe ever had. Zane would much rather be in the hands of his firey brother than the universe that loved using him as a chew toy.

As everything faded away, the last thing to go was Kai's panicked voice. It would be okay.

Absolutely!! I've noticed this only recently, but whenever I write for Malleus my style becomes so flowery and poetic. My hope is that it feels Victorian in essence, but I'm happy as long as it has elegance!

I think the same can be said when certain themes are attached to characters. If it's Rollo I'm writing for, you can expect plenty of religious symbolisms and references. If it's Floyd, there is a lot of deeper meanings hidden within informality. Floyd actually helped me write better dialogue (especially his own dialogue, as it's so distinct and very different from what I normally write). Thank you to Floyb for helping me step out of the rigid confines of dialogue I once trapped myself in. <3

Shostakovich and Aziraphale

I was thinking (and talking to @balance-of-probability endlessly) about the choice to have Shostakovich's fifth symphony feature so heavily in S2 ep 1, and how it struck me as a little odd as there are a bunch of composers Aziraphale loves mentioned in the book and Shostakovich isn't amongst them.

Backstory: In 1934, Shostakovich’s opera Lady Macbeth of Mtensk premiered to huge popular acclaim, which was very briskly walked back in 1936 after the Stalinist newspaper Pravda published an article denouncing it.

Actually more than denouncing it, condemning it. It wasn’t credited but was authored by a guy called David Zaslavsky who was almost definitely scribing for Stalin himself. Lady Macbeth was banned in the USSR until 1961.

Anyway by 1936 Shostakovich had written his fourth symphony, which he withdrew from public performance until 1961 because it was more of the same thing that had made the Soviet leadership cancel Lady Macbeth – it was unconventional, anti-patriotic, and indicated that Shostakovich was a “bourgeois formalist”.

So he shelved it and started working on Symphony No. 5 which is, on the surface at least, Soviet as fuck. And that’s what we hear Aziraphale listening to in S2E1.

(Sidebar this story is told in Julian Barnes’ The Noise of Time which is either a literary wank soup or a masterpiece depending on how cranky you are when you first read it)

So basically what Dmitri Shostakovich did in those years between the fourth and fifth symphonies was something that might be familiar to S2E6 enjoyers/agonisers: he decided to toe the party line.

Kind of.

Listening to the finale of the fifth symphony (and if you want to listen along it’s the recording of Leonard Bernstein conducting the New York Philharmonic, it’ll be called something like Symphony No. 5 in D minor, Op. 47; iv. Allegro non troppo) without the context of the rest of the symphony or in fact Shostakovich’s life is like ah yes that’s a bit of a Soviet battle anthem let’s march into Leningrad or whatever.

But it is, as critics have increasingly understood in the years since Shostakovich demurely described it as “a Soviet artist's no-nonsense response to fair criticism”, dripping with irony. This man reviled the Stalinist line on art and life – he takes the Soviet anthem and turns it into a sort of fucked up evil clown march. The whole thing gives me this vibe:

There’s a lot of stuff about that time in Shostakovich’s life that is extremely hard to verify. There’s a “memoir” which is for sure at least partially fabricated called Testimony in which there’s an alleged quote from our man saying that final movement is a parody, that “it's as if someone were beating you with a stick and saying, "Your business is rejoicing, your business is rejoicing", and you rise, shaky, and go marching off, muttering, "Our business is rejoicing, our business is rejoicing"."

Whether or not Shostakovich said that (some of his friends who outlived him support that reading, including Rostropovich who conducted a bunch of his work) you can definitely hear it in the piece and you can definitely see how it gives us a clue into the decision Aziraphale makes at the end of the season.

What Shostakovich had to decide back in the 1930s was whether he would a) flee to somewhere like the US, where many other artists targeted by Stalin went; b) stay and become a public nuisance, leading almost definitely to an off-the-books execution; or c) become a party-approved Soviet Artist and hope for change. Even nudge it along in a subtle way. Even get on the inside and work to bring it down. We don’t know how true that was for old mate Dmitri and we don’t yet know exactly what Aziraphale has planned. But yeah:

          Staying inside a rancid and destructive militarised culture in the hope that it can change

hello, i was late to the fandom so i might have missed out on this discourse but do we ever find out the real content of Ray's letter to Isabella? Is it something of a plot point the author hasn't developed in canon? If so, what would the plot be you think? Thank you so much!!

Shirai has never officially, explicitly stated in an interview what's in the letter Ray writes in chapter 22/S1 episode 7, but I've talked about this before and personally find it funny how he made a big deal out of the mystery surrounding it back in a 2019 Jump interview (translated here):

When I feel most people’s first guess as to what was in it after the escape arc concluded was eventually confirmed in December 2020 with the release of chapter 181.3:

A farewell letter from a son to his mother that reveals their biological connection when headquarters purposely kept it a secret.

It's meant to be such a huge revelation it stops Krone in her tracks and deters her from digging around in Ray's room further to discover the rewards he's been receiving for six years and the lighter fluid he's been stockpiling for five.

(Mystic Code Book Chapter 1 Q& A | Chapter 22; Krone evens whips out records she brought along in her suitcase from headquarters to corroborate what she's read.)

I've also talked before about how Ray's retaliation was threefold in its pettiness, and this letter falls into points 2 & 3. After years of bottling up his anger and resentment toward her, he wanted to incriminate her by implicating she at very least knew about the escape, potentially that she even helped with it, all because she knew of their biological connection and wanted him to survive (the same thing he wished she would have said to him back on his sixth birthday at the gate):

He found it sickening how she could choose to prolong her own life by sacrificing all his siblings over the course of her tenure at Grace Field. With this, he thought he would seal her death at the hands of the demons she groveled before like a dog, while he would die on his own terms as a human.

What he didn't count on was Isabella's prioritizing results over rules was something that was enabled by her mother, to the point they were willing to remove Krone from plant no.3 altogether.

Ray assumed Krone did not have the means to contact headquarters like Isabella did, so she would keep the bait and bide her time until presented with the opportunity to reveal it to someone higher in the chain of command. Ray assumed Krone would still be at Grace Field at the time of the escape, and that after he was dead and the four other oldest kids were gone and headquarters was looking for an explanation for how a blunder of this magnitude could have possibly happened, Krone would show her hand to usurp Isabella's position.

It's why he's so caught off-guard when Isabella reveals she made a move first.

As for why Shirai gave conflicting information about this, I'm assuming he wanted to leave the door open for multiple possibilities before his health tanked and he began aggressively cutting off story branches so he could still complete the series under his own power and maintain his sense of artistic integrity.

And scrolled through the entirety of you FaQ/lore/other lists

fandom etiquette and common sense here people like 😭

And I honestly feel bad for all writers out there and on tumblr because everyone always gets bombarded with asking when updates will come out or if such and such will happen

just leave authors alone!!! they'll get to it or they won't!!! they're people too!!! and when you repeatedly ask them annoying ass questions, it'll make them not wanna do it anyways, so it's not benefiting anyone!!!

It's been a problem for a long time in fandom spaces. People just don't look or read information quite literally in front of their faces. Hell it's a problem in the real world too. It was almost a daily occurrence when I worked retail opening shifts that someone be standing there, tugging on the locked door with the store hours right in front of their face. You just look stupid and all the employees talk about you in the break room.

I've seen it so many times with writers (and artists) that do requests and have a set of rules on what they will write, or at least won't write, and always there's someone coming into their inbox asking for something that is listed on "will not write" list. It's right there people. It takes five seconds maybe to look for those things on most people's blogs.

I don't mind hearing people's theories. I don't mind getting questions (when they're not things that have been asked 39439 times and there's a link on the lore masterlist). It gets annoying having to repeat myself over and over and over again about information that is readily available to you and in an organized, easy to navigate manner. I didn't have to go through my blog and find all my lore posts and organize them into masterlists. I could have just kept using the tag and make people scroll through 39484839 posts to find the one they want. 🤷‍♀️

It's not hard. It's really not.

Heyy can authors stop using fucking Ai art in their headers 🤝 if you don’t like people putting your fanfics into chatgpt or any other writing Ai then artists don’t like that shit either when you do it to them.

It’s not that hard to CREDIT artist okay :)) if you can write a long ass fucking fanfic for 1hr or more then a few minutes of your time can be used to find who the artist is when you use their artwork in fanfics.

This week was insane for me🤪. How was yours? I attended an event at Vermillion❣️, a gallery space on Capitol Hill sponsored by Creative Commons (CC), on Monday. Do you know what CC is?  Creative Commons is a non-profit organization that provides free copyright licenses 📝 to creators, authors📚 & artists (including musicians 🎼), which lets them share their work while retaining some rights. I was curious about the reason for the event, so I went. Was it fundraising💵? In a way, yes, similar to the “quiet phase” of a capital campaign 🤫. They were in town meeting organizations that already support them, & it gave them a chance to connect with other supporters 🤝 & gather information. The resources available via CC are not just the arts🎨, like Flickr or Unsplash 📷, or the music site Tribe of Noise 🎶. Some include data sets that can used by researchers📈. As taxpayers, we funded many of the projects. CC helps make the data accessible to the public📢. I spoke with CEO Catherine Stihler☝️. She’s passionate about CC’s purpose & helping it expand to more countries 🌏. Fascinating note: Catherine, pictured in the carousel, was a European Parliament (MEP) member for Scotland from 1999 to 2019🇬🇧. Workwise, 2 of my website projects 💻 are nearly ready to launch🚀. It has been intense & stressful to get to this point😧, but I see the light at the end of both tunnels. Still, I’m exhausted🥱! I’m an idiot! I don’t get many asks so I don’t really check for them and I completely missed this, I’m so sorry 😭 I really appreciate this, because full disclosure the shyness goes both ways. There’s loads of times I have to push myself through my anxiety to comment and I’ll get terribly insecure hoping I’m not being annoying or “too much” for people.
