"Kemono Friends" Stage Play Event Report
One of the works which were a hot topic in the first half of this year is Kemono Friends. The anime finished its broadcast in March but its popularity didn’t fade and there are many fans calling for more. Then, almost like an answer to the fans, for 4 days from 14 – 18 June, there was a short run of a Kemono Friends stage play at Shinagawa Prince Hotel Club eX in Shinagawa, Tokyo.
The Kemono Friends stage play, just like the game, anime, and manga, is set in a large zoo called ‘Japari Park’ which is located somewhere in the world. In Japari Park, through the power of the mysterious ‘Sand Stars’, the animals turn into anthropomorphic creatures called ‘animal girls’ one after the other. The animal girls call each other ‘Friends’ and they go on adventures throughout the park and battle the animal girls’ enemy, the Cerulean.
Orignally, Kemono Friends was a character contents project that started in 2015 with a mobile game which was available on Android and iOS. The game ended its service at the end of 2016, just before the broadcast of the anime. The comic was entitled Kemono Friends -Welcome to Japari Park!- and was serialized from 2015 until March 2017.
In the TV series, the lines, ‘Amazing!’ and, ‘So fun!’, said by the main character, Serval, became known as lines that melt you brain and the number of viewers who seemed almost addicted began to rise. After this, as the construction of Japari Park became clear, there was a rise in theories that this was a world in which the human race had gone extinct and just like many hit anime in times gone by, there were many tweets and blogs discussing the show. Kemono Friends became a big hit.
And so, a stage play set in the same world was born. The stage play is a story about the animal girls and the human Friend, Kaban-chan (Bag-chan), does not make an appearance. The Friends that are featured in the play were played by their voice actors which was bound to make fans happy. The anime’s theme song, ‘welcome to Japari Park’ was reviewed favorably by famous artists and the singers of the song, Doubutsu Biscuits x PPP, also made an appearance.
The voice actors who performed in the stage play are as follows: Doubutsu Biscuits: Yuka Ozaki (Serval), Kana Motomiya (Fennec), Saki Ono (Raccoon) PPP (Penguins Performance Project): Mikoi Sasaki (Royal Penguin), Ruka Nemoto (Emperor Penguin), Kyoka Tamura (Gentoo Penguin), Aina Aiba (Southern Rockhopper Penguin), Ikuko Chikuta (Humboldt Penguin). The rest of the cast was comprised of Hotaru Nomoto (Okapi), Moeno Nito (Mammoth), Misaki Nishikawa (Sheep), Ran Sakai (White Tiger/Saber Tiger), Yuri Kouno (Greater Flamingo), Rihona Kato (Tanuki), Azusa Inamura (Black Panther), Reika Ishii (Cheetah), Rikako Aida (Blue Whale), Miwa Furushou, Izumi Niihashi, Hinata Koizumi.
There was an interview with the cast during the dress rehearsal on 14 June before the first show.
Ozaki said, ‘The stage play is full of charm that is different to the anime. I want the audience to be soothed’, mentioning the charm of the stage version. Nomoto drew attention the Friends that appear in the play saying, ‘I would like everyone to come looking forward to seeing Friends that do not appear in the anime.’
Hiroki Murakami, the director and screenwriter of the play, said ‘The reason we got to do the stage play so soon after the anime ended in the middle of the boom is because we concentrated on making it. It was a fight against time. Seeing how we made the Kemono Friends world come alive on stage is the highlight. the voice acting team became the characters themselves even onstage. The actors who performed together with them are also very good. Right now, we have gathered almost all the cast that we want onstage. Please watch the “Japari Park that you can experience”!’
Nemoto, who plays the role of Emperor Penguin said, ‘So as not to bring shame to the name of the Emperor, I will try my best until the end.’ Sasaki also expressed her desire to do well onstage saying, ‘While biting back the joy of being able to play a princess, I will work hard until the closing show.’
As stated before, human Friends do not make an appearance. The Japari Park set is made to look decrepit showing that humans have gone extinct. Imagining that aspect of the story is one of Kemono Friends’ charms.
The story begins with the birth of Okapi. Serval takes Okapi around the park and introduces her to the other friends. When they try to watch the concert of the water area’s idols, PPP, they can’t get in because they do not have tickets. There, they decide to get the tickets illegally, referencing the illegal resale of tickets which is currently a problem in Japan. After that, they meet Cheetah in the Jungle Area who owns the shipping company called Japari Post which is a reference to the global giant, Amazon. References to current issues are included in the story and adds to its charm.
While watching PPP’s concert, Serval says that she wants to be an idol. At the time, the number of Friends in the park increased exponentially and so a commemoration festival was planned.
Serval sets out to find members for her group called ‘Savannah Girls’ to compete with PPP at the commemoration festival.
PPP tries to find a new song in a ‘box that plays music’ (a radio cassette’)but the music doesn’t play. When Serval and friends find the cassette tape, PPP is able to sing the new song. Meanwhile, Serval sets off to a ‘mysterious place that plays music’ that she heard about from Cheetah and tries to make the park’s closing song their own.
Of course, ‘Welcome to Japari Park’ is sung onstage. The cast includes actors familiar with stage plays and seeing all the Friends dancing and singing live was a great experience for the reporters.
It was been decided that there will be more performances of this stage play. It will be performed at AiiA 2.5 Theater Tokyo in Harajuku, Tokyo from Saturday 13 January until Sunday 21 January 2018. The advanced ticket sale begins on Saturday 18 November 2017 from 10:00. Won’t you enjoy Kemono Friends at the beginning of next year?

What's the weirdest pairing you ever heard of and why?
Hoo boy.
FULL DISCLOSURE: I was part of the Sonic fandom for 20+ years, so when you say “weirdest pairing”, friend, you know not what depths you plumb. To put it in the vernacular, I’ve seen some shit.
But anyway. I’m choosing to take a broad definition of “pairing” to mean any fandom work where two characters are depicted as having a relationship with each other. So the first thing that comes to mind is an extremely bizarre and very NSFW comic from a certain notorious website that will draw almost anything for you in comic form so long as you pony up the cash. The subjects of said comic were Jinx from the Teen Titans cartoon and Shadow the Hedgehog, and that’s all that needs to be said about that.
I would count the recurring Shadow/Shrek pairing too, but I’m reasonably certain that’s supposed to be ironic… though, again, with the Sonic fandom, it’s really difficult to tell.
Anyway. In that same vein, I once saw someone on DA with an obsession for shipping Julie-Su, Knuckles the Echidna’s girlfriend from the pre-Penderpocalypse, with Lumiere, the candle from Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. That one I’m 90% was NOT supposed to be ironic, and after seeing at least a dozen pieces in said artist’s gallery depicting them together, I wisely NOPE’D the fuck out.
Of course, however, I’m no stranger to odd pairings either, so feel free to call me a big fat hypocrite. I like to think there are justifications for each couple I ship, but your mileage may vary. I spent three-plus years and more than 200,000 words building up a relationship between Homura Akemi from Madoka Magica and Kagami Hiiragi from Lucky Star in my first major fanfic, Stars Above. That pairing sprung out of what was initially an insane, plotless, multi-series crackshipping fest, but partly thanks to my influence it developed an actual story. I was involved in this RP at the same time that PMMM was airing and I was in the full throes of obsession with it, so of course Homura had to show up there. Kagami’s mun and I noticed an interesting chemistry the two had, and both of them were and still are my waifus above all other waifus, so we started conspiring to get the two together, despite the VERY vocal objections of the thread’s Konata/Kagami and Madoka/Homura shippers. Once the two of us left the RP after a falling out with the other players, neither of us wanted to let the story we’d made go, so we started talking about turning it into a fanfic. We decided from the beginning that if we were going to do this, we were going to do it “as awesomely as possible”, so not only did we justify them meeting and getting together, we actually made the objections against the pairing into a major plot point! Part of the story’s draw is that the pairing is bizarre and should never have happened for a multitude of reasons, but it happened anyway, and I’m immensely proud of what we did with it.
My god, this answer is getting long-winded.
So. Back to the subject of weird pairings: as far as Precure goes, I’m guilty of shipping precious bae Yayoi Kise/Cure Peace with a number of other characters. I’ve a soft spot for her and Pop’s human form, despite how much I hate the human/fairy pairings from Yes! 5… dammit, she really did go nuts over him looking like a samurai in that one episode. I also ship her with Yui Nanase from Go! Princess, what with them both being shy, nerdy artists. And with Konata Izumi from Lucky Star, because of their shared otaku-dom. And with Makoto Nanaya from BlazBlue, because they both love giant robots with a passion and Yayoi’s always seemed squirrel-like to me. And with Himari Arisugawa/Cure Custard, for the latter reason and because only good things can come of shipping my favorite two smol yellow Cures together. Yayoi’s very shippable, is what I’m saying.
And, let’s see. I also think Homura Akemi and Hotaru Tomoe/Sailor Saturn would make a good pairing… Chibi-Usa and Hotaru were practically the prototypes for Madoka and Homura, right down to their theme colors. Both of them being manipulated by sociopathic assholes trying to turn them and/or their loved ones into hideous world-ending monstrosities makes for good common ground.
And that’s all I can think of for now, but that’s probably quite enough. I’ve incriminated myself enough already. :P

This Month’s Reads: January
In an effort to remember more of what I read, I’ve decided to track properly this year and record my thoughts in brief. Thus, here are This Month’s Reads.
highlights: I’ll Be Gone in the Dark, The Ghost Bride, They Both Die at the End, and a lot of comics
[image description: the covers for the books listed below]
Heart of Gold vol 1 (Eli Baum & Viv Tanner) Dunant is a faith healer. Ionel is a pianist losing his sight. Every week Ionel attends Mass hoping to be cured, but Dunant turns him away. Meanwhile, a series of strange deaths casts a shadow over this gorgeously illustrated tale.
While not much especially romantic occurs, our two leads are clearly leaning on the edge of something. Ionel is intrigued by the priest, both due to his own needs and Dunant’s lonely aura. Dunant confesses his innermost doubts to Ionel inadvertently, leading to some interesting discussions of faith. Those discussions and the art’s tender beauty were the highlights for me. The pacing was slow for my tastes and some scenes felt like they could’ve been edited or cut to avoid repetition.
*
I Hear the Sunspot vol 1-3 (Yuki Fumino, translator: Stephen Kohler)/ A brash college student named Taichi meets fellow student Kouhei by chance. Kouhei’s good looks attract attention, but he feels isolated due to his hearing loss. Taichi begins taking notes for Kouhei in exchange for lunch and a slow burn romance ensues.
This is one of my favorite manga from recent years, so I always reread the previous volumes when a new one comes out. Truly, the series improves with each volume. With the expanding cast, the mangaka explores different perspectives on and experiences with deafness. Volume 3 introduces Ryu, who is Deaf and lives life quite happily without hearing-- in contrast to Kouhei, who fears losing his remaining hearing.
[image description: the covers for the books listed below]
Little Women (Louisa May Alcott) I read Little Women for the first time during a young adult literature class in college. I must confess that I remembered very little of the plot, so reading it again was like starting entirely new. I forgot how funny it can be! The moral lessons for the most part still apply today, though I disagreed somewhat with a few of them.
The most intriguing and frustrating thing for me is Jo March, who reads to me as very much queer, though what flavor is debatable. My personal interpretation (and I’ll admit that I’m projecting) is that Jo is transmasculine and somewhere on the ace spectrum. And, personally, I believe the author was some flavor of queer as well.
*
Only the Ring Finger Knows (Satoru Kannagi & Hotaru Odagiri, translator: Sachiko Sato) This month’s BL LookBack!
*
Versailles of the Dead vol 1 (Kumiko Suekane, translator: Jocelyne Allen) I know very little about French history, so I have no idea how faithful this tale is to actual events. However, I don’t think the actual Marie Antoinette was her twin brother, possibly possessed by a demon. Likewise, I’m quite certain there were no zombies rampaging France.
Usually zombie stories and historical dramas don’t interest me. But I have a weakness for crossdressing plots, despite them usually being problematic. Surprisingly, this registered fairly low on the problematic scale-- so far. And while I wasn’t exactly riveted, it was compelling enough to persuade me to preorder the second volume. I hope this receives an anime adaptation because it could be quite spooky under the right director.
*
Coyote vol 1 (Ranmaru Zariya, translator: Christine Dashiell) It took me several attempts to finish this BL because the first chapter put me off. As expected of “werewolf in heat” erotica, there’s some dubious consent issues. However, once I finally got past that first chapter, the dramatic plot lured me in.
Werewolves are half-forgotten by the general populace, but certain groups still hold a grudge against them-- including the Galland mafia family, which our human lead “Marleen” is set to take over soon despite personally having no issue with werewolves. Meanwhile, our werewolf lead Coyote accepts a job to kill the Galland heir, not realizing it’s the very man he’s fallen in love with. Overall, the story has its fair share of objectionable issues, but I’m compelled enough to keep reading for now.
[image description: the covers for the books listed below]
I’ll Be Gone in the Dark: One Woman's Obsessive Search for the Golden State Killer (Michelle McNamara) I think that if a person were going to only read one true crime book ever, this one would be a good pick. The actual true crime element of the book is great. The writer excels at bringing the people to life-- the victims, the cops, the witnesses, even the unknown killer. She has a real knack for adding just enough evocative detail to paint a picture without sensationalizing.
However, what I find most compelling is how thoughtfully she examines her own motivations and actions-- and thus those of the reader as well. What is it about true crime that attracts people? And how can we pick apart these real life tragedies while respecting human life?
*
The Prince and the Dressmaker (Jen Wang) Frances is a seamstress working hard for a pittance and dreaming of grander things. Her designs catch the attention of Prince Sebastian, who is in need of both a dressmaker and a secretkeeper. The two become friends, often making a splash around town with Sebastian dressed up as the glamorous Lady Crystallia. However, some secrets can’t be kept forever.
This comic has been on my to-read list for a while based solely on the cute cover and title. It was indeed cute (I especially loved the comedic off-model panels) but the story went deeper and was more rewarding than I anticipated. However, content warning for a character being outed in a humiliating manner; it’s more intense than you might expect for comic like this.
*
Life Outside the Circle (H-P Lehkonen) Artist Sami leaves big city Helsinki for remote, rural Finland. There he meets his new neighbor Juha and Juha’s young daughter Maiju. Culture shock and romance ensues.
I had the good fortune to meet the cartoonist at TCAF 2018. I enjoyed the book I picked up from him there, as well as the queer Finnish comics panel he moderated. So I figured I’d check out more of his work and he didn’t disappoint-- this comic had plenty of genuine humor, heart-warming moments, and realistic angst. I especially appreciate the blasé approach to Sami being transgender; it’s just one of his traits and while it does influence some things in the story, overall it’s not that important.
*
The Ghost Bride (Yangsze Choo) An early contender for favorite book of 2019 appears! This book has it all: romance, spooky thrills, adventures in other realms, wit, plenty of food, and an upcoming Netflix miniseries!
Our hero is Li Lan, who has attracted the unwanted romantic attention of local rich boy Lim Tian Ching. Not only is he rude and selfish, he’s also dead! As Li Lan struggles to ward off Lim Tian Ching’s invasive spirit, she becomes more and more drawn into the world of the ghosts-- as well as the secrets of the Lim family and her own. I loved all the rich detail, both for the real life historical setting and the fantasy settings. Highly recommended and I’m very excited for the TV series as well.
[image description: the covers for the books listed below]
Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun vol 10 (Izumi Tsubaki, translator: Leighann Harvey) Another volume of Nozaki-kun, another plea from me for another season of the anime, please! Not to say that the manga isn’t good-- it’s great-- but this is a case of the anime being better, in my opinion.
Anyway, the rom-com misadventures of Nozaki, Chiyo, and the crew continues. Relationship development continues to be slow, which is no issue for me since that’s hardly what I’m reading for. (That said, Kashima and Hori seem like they might be on the verge of becoming a couple? Maybe?) Since I read Nozaki as aroace, I’m pleased to report that he remains as aroace-seeming as ever. Poor Chiyo, however, is crushing on him harder than before, to the extent that it’s starting to become kind of creepy.
*
The Other Dress (Emmy Engberts) This month’s transreading!
*
They Both Die at the End (Adam Silvera) I’m well aware that I’m in the minority here, but I actually enjoy reading major character death when it’s done well. “Enjoy” might be the wrong word; what I mean to say is that I appreciate the experience of being moved so powerfully by a work of fiction.
My main concern going into They Both Die at the End was that the deaths would feel cheap. After we get to know the main characters (who are young and healthy) so well and they’ve been through so much together, what kind of death could possibly feel authentic and “worth it” to the reader? I won’t spoil the end for anyone, but I thought the author came through strongly. Thoughtful and emotional with intriguing world building.
