HOW TO FORGE SHELLS FOR UKRAINE’S ARTILLERY
Every day for months, Ukrainian soldiers have fired thousands of American-made artillery shells at Russian troops, and all of that ammunition begins its journey to the battlefield at factories in northeastern Pennsylvania. The oldest of those plants, in Scranton, first began making steel shells in the early 1950s for the Korean War.
The empty shells are sent to rural Iowa, where they are filled with molten explosives and packaged for delivery.

"the night won't end: biden's war on gaza" / fault lines. 2024 [at 'al jazeera english']
As Israel’s bombing campaign continues in Gaza and the humanitarian crisis deepens to catastrophic levels, the Biden administration has not wavered in its support for Israel. United States weapons transfers – from 2,000-pound bombs to artillery shells and tanks – have been a crucial part of the Israeli military campaign. Fault Lines worked with journalists in Gaza to profile three families as…

Russia may actually be low on ammo. The number of artillery shells fired by the Russian invaders is down by 75%.
As Russia’s invasion of Ukraine enters its 11th month, US and Ukrainian officials tell CNN that Russia’s artillery fire is down dramatically from its wartime high, in some places by as much as 75%.
US and Ukrainian officials don’t yet have a clear or singular explanation. Russia may be rationing artillery rounds due to low supplies, or it could be part of a broader reassessment of tactics in the face of successful Ukrainian offenses.
[ ... ]
Last month, a senior US military official said that Russia has had to resort to 40-year-old artillery shells as their supply of new ammo dwindled. To the US, the use of degraded ammunition, as well as the Kremlin’s outreach to countries like North Korea and Iran, was a sign of Russia’s diminished stocks of weaponry.
And Russia’s ballyhooed relationship with China has its limits. Putin should not count on major help from Xi.
This is a portion of a long article in the Financial Times about China. This bit is on China-Russia relations.
China now perceives a likelihood that Russia will fail to prevail against Ukraine and emerge from the conflict a “minor power”, much diminished economically and diplomatically on the world stage, according to Chinese officials.
In addition, for all the public professions of bilateral amity, in private some Chinese officials express at least a measure of mistrust towards Putin himself.
Five senior Chinese officials with knowledge of the issue have told the FT at different times over the past nine months that Moscow did not inform Beijing of its intention to launch a full invasion of Ukraine before Putin ordered the attack.
[ ... ]
Whatever the exact nature of what Putin told Xi, Chinese diplomats seeking to rehabilitate China’s standing in Europe have in private conversations maintained that Beijing was unaware of Moscow’s intention to launch a full invasion, Chinese officials and European diplomats said.
So Putin should not depend on China to bail him out militarily as his invasion falters.
When your enemy is having difficulty is the best time to step up pressure. NATO and other friendly countries need to increase aid to Ukraine. Russia must be driven out and the sovereignty of Ukraine backed up through alliances. It’s only when Russia learns that there is no profit in invading and interfering with neighboring countries that Europe will achieve more permanent stability and peace.

Today's morning bubbling emotions are about Margaret who is the only one wearing a piece of protective equipment here, but Trapper who still keeps a hand on her back the whole time they're running, then not only tries to keep her a little covered when they have to hit the deck, but also dips his head to say something in her ear once he sees they're safe for the moment. Extreme husband behavior.

I have played Lancer only once, and have a rather erratic understanding of the rules, but I'm already creating homebrew. Which is probably very unbalanced, though I am trying (if you want to see it lmk it's coolllll)

Civil War Artillery Shell Discovered at Gettysburg
An unexploded artillery shell was discovered at Gettysburg National Military Park on Feb. 8, host to one of the bloodiest but most decisive battles of the Civil War.
Explosive Ordnance Disposal soldiers with the Army’s 55th Ordnance Company safely removed and destroyed the device, determined to be a 3-inch Burton case shot, according to an official statement.
“This type of munition was historically used during the Civil War and most likely came from the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863,” Capt. Matthew D. Booker, commander of the 55th Ordnance Company, noted.
Steven Brann, a contract archeologist, found the artillery shell while doing a ground sweep of the Little Round Top area, which is under renovation. The hill saw some of the most intense action between Union and Confederate troops during the three-day 1863 conflict, which ended in a Union victory and marked a key turning point in the Civil War.
After traveling from Fort Belvoir, Virginia, the soldiers carried the 10-pound shell to an alternate location, dug a hole, and placed it there along with C4 explosives to blow it up, Jason Martz, a spokesman for the military park said.
“We’re never going to know whether the thing was live or not,” Martz told the Washington Post. “And we’re never going to know how that shell got to the point where we found it.”
Though rare, this is not the first time unexploded munitions were recovered from Gettysburg. In August 2022, a 3-inch Hotchkiss shell was found lodged in a historic building being refurbished, the Army statement said.
Antique munitions from various conflicts are still being found across the United States and the world.
In February 2022, archeologists found a 10-pound Civil War shell at Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park in Georgia. In December 2022, five construction workers were hospitalized after being exposed to a gas released from striking a World War II-era phosphorous bomb while doing work at Army Garrison Stuttgart, Germany.

Pro-Putin stooges in the West are trying to rile up public opinion by claiming that aid to Ukraine will provoke World War III.
In fact, it is Putin who already considers himself at war with the West. His agents have been assassinating critics in the West since the 2000s. And since his illegal invasion of Ukraine, Putin's agents have engaged in acts of sabotage and terrorism in NATO countries.
The attempt to assassinate German arms executive Armin Papperger is just the latest blatant act of aggression by Russia.
The plot was one of a series of Russian plans to assassinate defense industry executives across Europe who were supporting Ukraine’s war effort, these sources said. The plan to kill Armin Papperger, a white-haired goliath who has led the German manufacturing charge in support of Kyiv, was the most mature. When the Americans learned of the effort, they informed Germany, whose security services were then able to protect Papperger and foil the plot. A high-level German government official confirmed that Berlin was warned about the plot by the US. For more than six months, Russia has been carrying out a sabotage campaign across Europe, largely by proxy. It has recruited local amateurs for everything from arson attacks on warehouses linked to arms for Ukraine to petty acts of vandalism — all designed to stymie the flow of weapons from the West to Ukraine and blunt public support for Kyiv. But the intelligence suggesting that Russia was willing to assassinate private citizens underlined to Western officials just how far Moscow was willing to go in a parallel shadow war it is waging across the west. Papperger was an obvious target: His company, Rheinmetall, is the largest and most successful German manufacturer of the vital 155mm artillery shells that have become the make-or-break weapon in Ukraine’s grinding war of attrition. The company is opening an armored vehicle plant inside of Ukraine in the coming weeks, an effort that one source familiar with the intelligence said was deeply concerning to Russia.
People constantly pooping in their pants worrying about World War III have probably forgotten that World War II was triggered by people endlessly trying to placate Hitler.

As a practical matter, consider that Putin's "3-day special operation" is now 866 days behind schedule. At the time the invasion began he had the second most powerful military in the world; he now has the second most powerful military in Ukraine.
Even before Western countries responded to the invasion with additional arms to Ukraine, resourceful local farmers were a factor in thwarting Putin's planned conquest.
youtube
Putin was not capable of defeating Ukrainian farmers in 2022 and he's even less capable of defeating NATO in 2024.
Ignore bullshit scares from Russian bots or MAGA weasels. Russia produces second-rate military equipment which is operated by poorly trained personnel who are little more than cannon fodder.
