“Tom o’ Bedlam” is the title of an anonymous poem in the “mad song” genre, written in the voice of a homeless “Bedlamite”. The poem was probably composed at the beginning of the 17th century. In How to Read and Why Harold Bloom called it “the greatest anonymous lyric in the [English] language.”⁣

The terms “Tom o’ Bedlam” and “Bedlam beggar” were used to describe beggars and vagrants who had or feigned mental illness (see also Abraham-men). Aubrey writes that such a beggar could be identified by “an armilla of tin printed, of about three inches breadth” attached to his left arm. They claimed, or were assumed, to be former inmates of the Bethlem Royal Hospital (Bedlam). It was commonly thought that inmates were released with authority to make their way by begging, though this is probably untrue. If it happened at all, the numbers were small, though there were probably large numbers of mentally ill travellers who turned to begging, but had never been near Bedlam. It was adopted as a technique of begging, or a character. For example, Edgar in King Lear disguises himself as mad “Tom o’ Bedlam”.”⁣

Maurice Prendergast (American, 1858 – 1924) Beach at St. Malo ca. 1907 Oil on canvas, 36.8 x 44.5 cm Carmen Thyssen Collection • #Repost @paintings_i_love № 3205 Prendergast, who enjoyed swimming, depicted the seashore in countless paintings from Revere Beach or Gloucester in Massachusetts to St. Malo in France. Prendergast loved the sea, and at times, as he was attempting a water cure to alleviate his deafness, his pleasure in bathing took on an almost hedonistic quality. "To take off one's clothes and lay full stretched on the sand exposed to the wind and the sun is the finest sensation I know on a spring day. Even in cold days in March one little realizes the penetrating force of the sun on the body." Although Prendergast had visited St. Malo during his 1891-1894 stay in Paris and also in 1914, it was his two-month summer visit in 1907 that inspired most of his canvases. St. Malo, situated on the Brittany Coast, had at the time a little more than ten thousand inhabitants. Prendergast was obviously attracted by the coastal town with "its high tides and ramparts, " where he painted such landmarks as the lighthouse and Chateaubriand's Tomb, but it was the fine sandy beach with its colourful bathing tents that attracted him the most. Servus! Ultra High Networth Individuum Die letzten Tage habe Ich bei mir in der Atelier Galerie auf der Couch viel gegammelt und gechillt. Klar viel über Politik, Kommunikation, Psychologie, auf Twitter gelernt. Texte zu meiner Kunst verfasst, und hier veröffentlicht. Allerdings nichts gemalt. Ich habe hier in den letzten Wochen alle meine Bilder ( Gemälde Leinenstoff/ Papierarbeiten) aufgehangen. Alle Wände vollgehangen. In der Kunstwelt heißt das ‘ Petersburger Hängung ‘. Für mich ein guter Test wie meine Kunstwerke wirken. Bald werde Ich die Werke wohl mal umdrehen, und Sie von der anderen Seite zeigen. Habe alle meine Gemälde beidseitig gemalt. Das auf der Couch rumliegen muss auch mal sein. Zur Ruhe kommen, Bewusstsein, und Präsenz praktizieren. Dann versteht man was Wie wirkt. Rocky's Italy: The Mouth of Truth, Rome (Bocca della Verità)

This ancient Roman marble mask is located on the left wall of the portico of the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin in Rome, Italy. Medieval legend maintains that it will bite off the hand of any dishonest person who inserts their hand in its mouth. Immortalized by Gregory Peck in the 1953 Hollywood classic, “Roman Holiday,” when he shocks Audrey Hepburn by pretending to have lost his hand, the “Bocca della Verita” still attracts many tourists who want to test their honesty by inserting their hands.
