THE WANDERLUST | LADAKH, INDIA
From the earliest civilization centered at the Indus valley, to the high passes of the ancient silk route, this once to be one of the most remote places in the world is now open for visitors to experience what walking on a moon would feels like.
There was excitement that morning on our flight, the earliest one from New Delhi to Leh. Passengers were crowding one side of the plane with cameras in their hands facing the oval windows. Massif capped in snow, the Karakoram Range offered a welcoming sight that triggered everyone’s anticipation. Then, there was a peaceful silence in the cabin as we gazed solemnly at the pyramidal peaks covered in silky white layers of snow below.
We landed at 3500 meters above sea level at Leh Kushok Bakula Rinpoche Airport, a small airport in Ladakh, in India’s Jammu and Kashmir region. From the tarmac, the peaks and drops of the cream colored hills and snowcapped mountains look crisp with contrasting blue skies in the backdrop.
Breathtaking
That 1.5-hour flight took us from low altitude to this high land at an overwhelming speed that our bodies didn’t have time to adjust to the new environment. When the locals’ cheeks blushed with oxygen-rich blood, my lips turned blue from the lack of it.
Our hotel, a 20-minute drive from the airport, is a charming establishment offering the view of the abandoned Leh Palace, a small courtyard with apricot blossoms, a dining hall where I indulge myself with generous amount of apricot jam every morning, and a common room with pillows and carpeted sofas—the place always smelled of dry wood and is warm during cold days. Later on, numerous pots of masala tea will be poured in this quarter as the four of us use the common room a lot to recharge and lounge after our day trips.
Down The Road
Ladakh, or the land of high passes, is home to Khardung-La. At 5550 meters above sea level, this route that we took to get to Nubra Valley, is the highest motorable pass in the world. By the maintenance and safety measures that the Border Roads Organization (BRO) provided to keep avalanches and rock slides aside, it is evident that these passes are important supply routes for the border areas of India.
A collection of wits and wisdom and almost impossible to miss, the road signs along the BRO managed roads carried messages such as “Let your insurance policy mature before you” and “All is well”. As we drive up north, we watched the reddish rocky mountain transformed into a scenic frozen ground covered in heaps of soft snow that made me want to build a snowman before anybody asked.
A Road Trip Down The Old Silk Route
Six hours and some painful high-altitude traffic later, the Vale of Nubra is in sight: a vast clearing of sand dunes with the glacial Shyok River the color of ice blue flowing into the legendary Indus River. These old rivers have witnessed the rise and fall of civilizations alongside it throughout the history.
Once part of the silk route, bands of traders and their caravans—and probably some bandits, too—had seen this majestic vista when they crossed from South to Central Asia. A ride at the back of the two-hump bactrian camels is available for tourists looking for a glimpse of the old-school road trip.
The valley is home to Diskit Monastery, the oldest in the area. It has the Maitreya Buddha sitting ubiquitously at 106 feet tall. The gold gilded Future Buddha is looking serenely towards Pakistan in the distance.
Later, I noticed that all the monasteries I visited in Ladakh are situated on a higher ground of a plateau or perched on a cliff, giving the humble establishments a million-dollar sweeping view.
The Valley of The Wild
Ascending and descending at motor speed gave our driver, Padma, a nosebleed from the dramatic change in altitude and climate. We stopped by at a rest area to get a serving of steaming thukpa in Changla, the world’s third highest motorable pass at over 5181 m.
As we begin to drive down to Changtang, Padma told us a story about a snow leopard that killed 12 cattle in his village—news like this is extremely rare at my hometown. The local police then caught the endangered species, and released it back into the wild, presumably far away from human settlements. I couldn’t help but wish I could see this leopard until I looked around and realized that the landscape provided a perfect camouflage for this elusive creature.
The plateau is adorned with grassland and streams that seemed to disappear to a point in the perspective. Horses grazed nonchalantly by the river under the shades of rocky hills with boulders the size of a house. A short drive away, a species of wild ass called kiangs were flocking, their fur golden under the afternoon sun. And, in the patterned grounds, marmots walked around coyly near their subterranean abode. Like the snow leopard in Padma’s story, these marmots are also protected.
Enchanting waters
The mountain range begins to unveil like curtains as we approached Pangong Lake. On site, the water reflected deep blue and turquoise, and the mountains were the shades of bronze and gold. Like a chameleon, this cornucopia of colors change each time a passing cloud casts a shadow.
By this time, I was already halfway through reading Neil Gaiman’s The Ocean at the End of the Lane about a girl who believes that a pond in her farm is an ocean. And there I was, standing by a lake vast enough that I can claim it as an ocean—it is saline after all.
At over 4600 m, Pangong Lake is the highest saltwater lake in the world. We sat on the shores just far enough so that the icy water couldn’t reach us, and wondered about how the waves come about and if there are any tides during full moon. Meanwhile, the kaleidoscope in front of us was darkening as the sun sets in this grand theater. This landlocked water that stretches all the way to China will mark the end of our trip in Ladakh. In between the silence and the sound of ripples, we closed the day with a notion that all is, indeed, well on this good day.

ALWAYS EXPLORE | issue No. 3 SAMOSIR
It was my first solo trip experience wandering North Sumatra. Lake Toba is the highlight of my journey.
It was started from Amplas bus station, I took public transportation because it’s the cheapest way to get Lake Toba. As my route from here to Lake Toba I had to pass through Pematang Siantar, Tebing Tinggi, then the last before sail to Samosir was Parapat. It took approximately 4 hours until I reach Parapat from Medan city, then I took the boat to reach Tomok, Samosir Island. I was super excited when I spot the wide open Lake Toba outside the bus window, moreover when I got my boat ride to Tomok, I laid my body on the top of the boat’s deck, and my vision was suddenly pleased by the green insight around. Lake Toba is one of the awesome natural wonders of the world. This is a crater lake so enormous it has an island named Samosir. At over 1,145square kilometers, and dept of 450meters, Lake Toba is actually more like an ocean. This is one of formed lake by the ancient mountain explosion thousands years ago, and made this lake as the largest in Southeast Asia and one of the deepest lakes in the world
Arrived in Samosir, I right away went to Tuk Tuk, Tuk Tuk is like a backpacker area in Samosir, there I found many cheap hostel like under IDR 200K. I explore Samosir by riding motorbike, renting motorbike is recommended if you want to explore this island, due to the road is not really fine. And first day exploring this island was so fantastic, my first destination is Siallagan Village, it’s one of traditional Batak Villages in Samosir, they have some attractions like Sigale Gale Dance, Batak Museum, Traditional Houses, and some histories about this place. I was also so impressed by the people here, they are so welcome, humble, and makes feel comfortable for the traveler like me.
The following destination was randomly beautiful, I ride my scooter through the silent road in Samosir, with the magnificent view of Lake Toba at the right side. I stopped at one little hill and did hiking to the top to catch the vide of the lake. It was around Simanindo Village. I really enjoyed the view, the atmosphere around, it was so refreshing.
On the next day, I left for Medan city by through the different route, because I wanted to get the wider lake’s insight. This spot has been famous, named Tele Tower, it’s like 2 hours from Tuk Tuk by public transportation. For the 3rd floor, I could see the breathtaking view of Lake Toba, the huge green hills and the still lake were perfectly seen from here.
What an experience to be remembered, finding another place I’ve never been before is always a pleasure. There are always story and the memory. Lake Toba, once you know it, you never forget it.
