4. What was that last straw that made you block that annoying person?

I block frequently and often for a lot of reasons, but one time I admittedly got very annoyed by someone RB’ing a post of mine complaining about the OG Graphic Novel’s Spiro with the comment, and I quote- “He’s on a liquid diet, he’s not going to look like the DILF you draw him as”.

Which like… wtf, I’ll draw him as a ‘dilf’ (which was never the intent) if I well please, and that’s without bringing the ableism into it.

7. What character did you begin to hate not because of canon but because how how the fandom acts about them?

Hmm… can’t really say anyone? Not in AF, anyways, usually if I don’t like a character it’s because of their canon actions/I just don’t vibe with them.

The RWBY fandom on the other hand… yeah I really dislike all the main protags now. God, the RWBY fandom is awful.

15. That one thing you see in fanart all the time.

… I’m really trying here, usually I don’t mind much of anything in fanart besides like… whitewashing Holly or something, but that should be self-explanatory.

I do find it odd when people draw Artemis from like, the first few books and they make him look like a mini adult? Like, I know he’s described as vampiric and all but he’s not going to have a man’s jawline/razor-sharp cheekbones as a 12-year-old child. Make him look like a kid! But that could also be artstyle, granted, so take that with a grain of salt.

Oh! And drawing Artemis with like… blood on him. Canon Artemis. He’s not some kind of killer if you’re looking for that go watch Five Hargreeves or Loki or something.

I get that it was never going to happen, but seriously, Artemis should have been confirmed as autistic in canon. Not just in terms of representation and diversity, but narratively.

The AF series has themes related to the "changeling" trope in folklore - Artemis (and the humans around him, but that's a different post) is changed by the People, and by the friendships he forms among them. So much so, that perhaps if you had not been following his journey, you would not recognise the boy who sells a lemur as the same person he becomes near the end of the series.

Artemis is very much the odd one out in his family - whilst his parents and siblings are concerned with "normal" things, and very much seem to be a "normal" family, Artemis still has the traumas of his childhood which cause him to find it harder to relate to this image of family, partially because he has found his own family, which does not include his parents.

The changeling, in folklore, is a child stolen by the fae, and will never return as themself - they are replaced by a faerie child. They are also ungovernable, and therefore their parents must eventually get rid of them.

Perhaps the part of Artemis's story which most resembles the changeling's is his journey to Limbo, and his return three years later. When he leaves Earth, he is a normal fourteen-year-old boy. When he returns, he is part fairy - he has magic, and Holly's eye.

Perhaps Artemis's cloning also counts - he is again no longer wholly human.

In Deny All Charges, we see Fowl Sr cast away Artemis as a child, saying that Artemis is no longer his son. Although in the Fowl Twins series we don't get to see Artemis's relationship with his parents, we can assume that it isn't great.

As an adult, Artemis is not close to his parents. He is not the son they wanted - either of them. He is too unwilling to change as suddenly as his father did, and he will not forgive them for his childhood. So perhaps, as with the changeling, he has become too unruly - not in a traditional sense, but in the sense of causing too much upset to the new structure of the family.

So Artemis is very much the quintessential changeling child - he is isolated from the rest of his family, preferring the company of others. He leaves, and returns not quite human, and his parents will never see him in quite the same way.

So where does the autism fit in? Well, many people have theorised that the changeling is actually an explanation for behaviours which today would be cause for an autism diagnosis.

One main characteristic of the changeling child is that they "display intelligence far beyond their apparent years, as well as possess uncanny insight."

Having unusual intelligence is not representative of all autistic children, but the second half of that statement stood out to me especially. Autism is often explained as "a different way of seeing the world," and that is precisely what this seems to be describing.

A child who preferred to stand in a corner, listening and observing, rather than joining in the conversation.

A child who had trained themself to notice people's emotions (since it did not come naturally to them) and so could tell when someone meant what they were saying.

A child who could not understand implied instructions, and had to ask questions until they found out exactly what they could and could not do.

A child who found telling untruths difficult, and so learnt to twist their words so that they could mislead others whilst uttering not a single falsehood.

A child who refused to touch a certain item, saying that it felt bad on their skin.

A child with a detailed, long-lasting memory, who would remember what you had promised, whether it was to them or to another.

These were the changeling children, who today we might diagnose with autism. (Each example I described is a legitimate autistic symptom, by the way, and most of them can also be linked to fae lore.)

These were the uncanny children, who were perhaps not quite human - perhaps they were faeries, then?

As babies, these children could not articulate their needs, or the ways in which they were different, or the way they saw the world - so perhaps it is no surprise that their parents saw them and thought their baby had been replaced by a faerie.

And many of the examples I described, I can, off the top of my head, think of places in canon where these symptoms (and many others) apply to Artemis.

It would have been so narratively satisfying if Artemis had been confirmed as autistic. I'm not surprised it didn't happen, but damn, I wish it had.

I agree with @piscespixiewastaken, but I can also see the concern.

On one hand, I've gotten many asks about Hartemis, and I've felt like if I don't say the right thing, I'll be labelled something I'm not. There is an inkling of the good vs evil, with-us-or-against-us in these asks, which have historically torn fandoms apart.

On the other hand, it isn't true that nobody ships child!Artemis and adult!Holly. I don't know if they're in the fandom anymore, or were ever active on tumblr, but there are some Dead Dove: Do not eat AF fanfics out there. But again, these are old: like, a decade maybe. So please, as piscespixie says, protect yourself and curate your feed. For your own mental health, I'd even say don't confront people who are on the "other side," whichever that may be.

I believe in our little fandom. In the over twenty years of its existence, even when Hartemis was more popular, there have been no reports of fan-on-fan abuse (that I know of). And if anyone were to be inappropriate with a minor in the fandom or outside it, I believe we'd stand up for the victim: because Artemis Fowl is, at its core, about the equality and protection of all peoples.

A final note: even if Artemis and Holly were to get together in canon, it would not be grooming. Grooming is a conscious, purposeful choice on the side of the adult, and Holly fits none of the criteria of a groomer. For more information on the signs of grooming, read this RAINN article. I'm writing this not to defend Hartemis, but to defend Holly as a character.

Not something I’d normally post but this has infuriated me for YEARS. The most popular Artemis Fowl ship is Hartemis. For anyone that doesn’t know, it is the titular character x a character named Holly Short. I don’t know, but I never noticed any chemistry between them but that’s not the point. The problem with this ship is that Holly is in her 80s and Artemis is 15 at the end of the series. Nobody ever seems to notice or care about that fact, though. Not only that, but she KISSED HIM. She kissed him and nobody acknowledges how messed up that is.

i have no idea what changed/shifted but i think ALL the time about how in the af fandom in 2009-2011 literally everybody was shipping hartemis and nobody had a problem with it.. it was so normalized that it was even canon in the mfing BOOKS and nobody cared or thought it was weird 😭 eoin colfer seriously pulled some He Magically Ages Up And She Magically Ages Down fuckery JUST so it would be ok for them to kiss 😭😭😭😭😭 and absolutely NO ONE had a problem with it or thought it was bad or weird and we all shipped it. and that’s basically the only fandom i remember something like that being prevalent in but i imagine those attitudes were common to like, the whole internet. nobody gave a single shit if you shipped a kid with an adult like it was whatever. there is seriously still fanfiction i wrote up there on the site when i was artemis fowl’s literal age (TWELVE) that ships him with a grown ass whole adult…. and i do not remember having a single inkling that this might not be ok??? nowadays you would get skewered and canceled SOOOO fast if you tried to pull that. like what changed. how come we all thought this stuff was ok back then and it was the norm and nowadays you’d be a pariah at best. i am so obsessed and fascinated genuinely i have no clue what happened to change everyone’s attitudes

Jesus I’m glad that went through! I thought Tumblr ate it. 

Yeah, please do! As a result of that fic I have now realized that a) Artemis Fowl really holds up from what I was a kid and b) Artemis Fowl is so much worse in so many ways than I remember it being. 

I was ranting at someone (Sorry Hannah!) the other day about how children’s literature is inherently different from adult’s literature, because in children’s literature when the child is treated like an adult it’s expected and normal, while in adult literature it just seems mean and child abusey (This makes Harry Potter, which tries to be both children’s and adult literature, weird as fuck). Reading Artemis Fowl as an adult, I’m like - holy shit why are his parents so awful. Why are his adult sidekicks treating him like he’s 30 instead of 13. Why is the narrative explicitly telling me Artemis is his own worst enemy and then telling me that he deserves it because he’s a mean nasty little teenage boy. Being smart is not the same as being mature!

I just wish that the series was a little bit kinder to him. We all projected on Artemis a lot as a kid (well, I didn’t, but I can tell y’all did) and I feel like if the narrative had been kinder and more understanding about the very heavy topics it half-heartedly tried to tackle, then maybe it would have resulted in readers who were kinder to themselves.

Background/History

Lucia was born in Ariccia, Italy to Bianca and Simon, she is the second oldest. She spent much of her life in Italy until three of her grandparents were killed by death eaters and then her family moved to Britain hence her heavy accent

Lucia’s father taught her everything she knows about fighting which led to her physique and fueled her laser focused aim of protecting her family which is why she was so distraught when Cirilo went missing. For months she was basically inconsolable 

This changed when Lucia realized she can try get Cirilo back by learning everything he did in his investigations of the cursed vaults when she starts Hogwarts.

In her second year, she met Cassandra Cresswood when she decided to search the library on her own for information on the Vaults

She took Cassie to the Celestial Ball but much to Cassie’s disappointment as friends (Lucia didn’t want to jeopardize their friendship despite her having a crush on Cassie)

But later in the year, Cassie got fed up with Lucia and full out asked her out though they tried to keep it secretive

Year 5 was bittersweet for Lucia, on one hand she got her brother back and he decided to not abandon her but on the other hand Rakepick escaped after torturing Merula.

During her fifth year, Lucia also forged her magic gauntlets at  The Tower of The Regal Sunset Sea which is also her family’s ancestral home. Her gauntlets increase her speed and strength

Time for a lot of canon divergence  Lucia gave up on the cursed vault hunt, leaving it to Cirilo and everyone else but just in case she hired the Dark Sun Assassins, which is led by her extended family, to kill Rakepick just in case to calm her worries

In her sixth year, she very reluctantly came along with Ben and Merula to investigate rumours of an R meeting in the forbidden forest, this is where Rakepick tried to kill Ben and when Rowan tried to get in the way of Rakepick’s killing curse. Lucia pulled Rowan out of the way just in time and anger welled up inside her due to her remembering her helplessness when her grandparents died causing her to use the full power of her gauntlets ending up with Rakepick’s left arm being obliterated.  

After this is when she got her tattoo, it represents Cassie 

It is also in her sixth year that her relationship with Cassie is found out by the school when they are caught kissing before a quidditch match

In the final battle of the cursed Vaults when all of R tried to get the treasure of the final battle, Lucia joined in the battle and was the one who ended up killing Rakepick

After she graduates, she briefly becomes a wand maker and magizoologist before finally becoming a baker with Cassie

Three years after she graduates, she and Cassie get married

Four years after she graduates, she has her first kids, Alissa and Selene though they are carried by Cassie

When Voldemort returned she was openly defiant of him and joined the Order of the Phoenix. She also sheltered Muggleborns where she could and commonly was found dueling Death Eaters sent after her and her family alongside Cassie

She had Aurea a year before the battle of Hogwarts, this time she was the one who was pregnant

She was absent from the Battle of Hogwarts as she stayed behind to protect her family from any would be attackers while Cassie went to fight in the battle which she survived much to Lucia’s relief and the two were able to live their lives in peace

Personality

Lucia most of the time is very happy, always smiling in some way but this hides her extremely protective side for her loved ones and the anger that follows when her loved ones are hurt. She will never give up on anyone and will always do her best to help them.

However if anyone she cares about is hurt and she can’t get revenge either because the perpetrator is gone or whoever or whatever did it did so out of fear, she will be very distraught and blame herself even if she quite literally couldn’t have done anything and will shut herself away for days but if the perpetrator is not gone then she will be merciless and will kill them if they hurt her loved ones badly enough(Before Year 5, she would not readily kill).

She for the most part cannot handle people who are seemingly grumpy all the time and will intentionally avoid people like that.

She is very empathetic and tries to do her best to help her friends out when they are in bad places but she fails to take the same advice and apply it to herself and will fall into dark places easily if the signs aren’t noticed quick enough.

She is very resistant to sleeping potions and charms to such an extent that by the time she’s in year 7 she is basically immune and requires extremely potent versions used on her for it to take proper effect

All her scars came from a magical accident when a spell she was trying to create backfired injuring her and Cassie

She is very proud of her heritage and will fight people if they insult it in her presence

She has Norse ancestors on her father’s side of the family though most of the traditions and practices from them have been lost in time

She is fluent in Italian, English and Scottish Gaelic, the latter of which she learned from Cassie

She for most of her life had a huge fear of heights which came from her fall, she overcame it with the help of her friends when she decided to watch Cassie’s quidditch matches

hey kids, figured i’d jump on the bandwagon and make a post regarding SHIP PREFERENCES for my muses (they will be under the cut bc it’s a looooong list). please note that there may be other otps that i have for these muses, but if they’re already in a ship exclusive type of deal, i won’t be mentioning them here since they’re not technically open. it can also be that there are ships that i simply never considered before, but that doesn’t mean they’re off the table - if you have a ship idea, feel free to hmu about it ofc!

also, this list only applies to canon dynamics. crossover ships as a general rule are always open by default, we just need to discuss it beforehand!

adora - glimmadora, and i’m open to any of the other princesses too? (except for frosta ofc) i never gave it much thought but i’d be down for it if plotted. only notps are adora x any male or any adult characters. alphonse elric - honestly i don’t have any canon ships for al? i don’t rly ship al x mei (that’s a notp for me, sorry), and in general i think relationships with him will take a looooot of development. he’s still open for shipping tho, it’ll just take a while to get there. aurora - aurora x phillip, i love them pls gimme it. notp is aurora x diaval. belle - belle x beast/adam. notp is unsurprisingly belle x gaston. cana alberona - cana x laxus, cana x lucy. also down for cana x gray, though it’ll take some plotting since they’re primarily a brotp for me. conner kent - conner x cassie. can be persuaded to ship with other dc ladies, though it will take some plotting (like cissie for example). my big notp for him is conner x m’gann. also conner x rose. aaand tbh conner x steph is a bit of a notp for me too bc i play them both and i just don’t see it imo. dick grayson - dick x babs, dick x zatanna (yj verse). dick x kory is usually a notp for me (particularly in the titans show, i cannot stand them), but i’m tentatively open to other verses and aus, though it requires heavy plotting. another notp is dick x donna bc they’re siblings tbh, and anyone in the extended batfam (save for babs); also dick x rachel in titansverse bc she’s his Child ok. gajeel redfox - gajeel x levy (OTP!!!). i could also maybe be down for gajeel x juvia, though it would require heavy plotting bc theyre a brotp first and foremost imo. hercules - hercules x megara. hiccup haddock - hiccup x astrid. honey lemon - honey x tadashi, honey x gogo, honey x fred. i’m also down for honey x wasabi, tho it might take a biiiit more plotting. big notp is honey x hiro or any of the older characters. kayley - kayley x garrett. lyon vastia - lyon x juvia. i could be down for lyon x sherry, but it’ll take some plotting. notp is lyon x gray (i know it’s a popular ship but i just see them as brothers tbh). mermista - mermista x perfuma. open to other princess ships (frosta excluded); i never gave it much thought here either, like with adora, but i could be down for it. only notp i can think of other than the adult characters is mermista x bow - they’re good bros, that’s all. miles morales - miles x gwen. mirajane strauss - mira x laxus. also down for mira x erza. milton “mg” greasley - mg x lizzie. mg x kim. i don’t really see him with hope as is in canon, but i could be talked into it if plotted. notp is mg x josie bc they’re bffs ok. mimi tachikawa - mimi x koushiro, mimi x taichi, mimi x yamato (with some plotting). notps are mimi x jyou (PLATONIC SOULMATES BBY) and mimi x takeru/any of the 02 kids. phillip - phillip x aurora. stephanie brown - steph x tim, steph x jason. can be talked into steph x kara, tho i mostly see them as friends. notps are steph x any of the other extended batfam members, and steph x conner. EDIT: this is the only crossover ship i’ll include here bc i’ve been highkey craving it for a while, but i’d love to do steph x peter parker, i feel like they would be cute af. wally west - wally x artemis. i’m also down for wally x linda, though my comics knowledge is veeeery limited, so it would take some plotting. notp is wally x m’gann. wendy marvell - wendy x chelia. notp is wendy x mest, just.. i cannot with the huge age difference. same goes for wendy and most of the guild members tbh. zoya nazyalensky - zoya x harshaw, zoya x genya. i still don’t know where i stand with zoya x mal, but for it to work it would need a looooot of plotting. notp is zoya x the darkling. amy march - amy x laurie. evie grimhilde - evie x ben, evie x jay. evie x harry (with plotting), evie x lonnie. notps are evie x carlos (siblings!!!!) and evie x doug. sonia - sonia x leon. could be open to ships with some gym leaders. notp is sonia x hop/any of the younger characters.

Zartemis pretty much any cute couply thing you can think of. Even though they pretty much hid their feeling for each other maybe a cute date away from the rest of the hunters and it’s just them. You didn’t frighten me away just ended up crashing not long after sending the message 😂

Yay! I didn’t scare you 😂! Okay, so I’m gonna give you some of my personal head-canons for them first then a little fic drabble! 🤗- Both of them were clueless lesbian disasters -They met by complete accident originally. I like to think Artemis (being new at the god stuff for the time being) got into a bit of trouble and Zoë was there to help.-At first they don’t know what to make of each other because Zoë’s obviously heard stories about the gods from her dad and Artemis had obviously heard stories about the titans and probably their kids from her dad as well. -Artemis is originally a very curious and pure hearted little bean so she sort of follows Zoë around -Zoë is annoyed at first but she grows to like the company (I always felt that she was alone and by herself for a long time) and Zoë teaches Artemis about the mortal world. -Artemis does her whole hunt thing and the first person she invites is Zoë who obviously says yes. -They’re two peas in a pod and essentially go on a shit ton of dates without realizing it. Like, they chill under the stars, climb trees together, mess around in lakes, etc. -It takes a bit of time before anyone else joins the hunt -Orion shows up and Zoë is not having it. She hates this man. Is absolutely pissed. -Orion is loud, obnoxious, always trying to out do her, and definitely trying to get Artemis’ attention but Artemis is clueless af -Bad stuff goes down and Zoë is more than happy when he is gone but she’s stuck with a cry conflicted Artemis who did appreciate Orion as a friend when he wasn’t trying to hit on her-jumping ahead they accidentally kiss in a mini crises and later they’re like ‘shit’ because they both know they like each other. -Aphrodite freaking knows! And Aphrodite is freaking pissed. -Artemis is the only person who doesn’t fawn over the love goddess and Aphrodite is all, “Seriously? Of all people she picks a Titan’s daughter?!” -When Zoë dies it’s obviously super sad and all but later Hades is like “Okay, Artemis is the only person who actually talks to me, she took care of my daughter for the time being, held a freaking sky, didn’t smite my son for being annoying, I guess I can help her out.” -Then Hades essentially is like “happy birthday here’s your girlfriend.” And basically just gives Zoë back to Artemis who is both super happy and extremely confused. -which is also why Thalia gets to go and have her own life because there’s two lieutenants now and Thalia can be the emergency back up— — —(I will post the little fic later I promise. I am being dragged from my house to do adult-ish things) 😭Parents Why?!

To elaborate slightly- AF really, really doesn’t need to get any ‘darker’ than it already is, and certainly not in such a manner that it could go on to be labeled as ‘superviolent’. Keep in mind that AF is primarily a children’s/teen’s series, and in my opinion it should remain that way- just because the original fans are no longer children doesn’t mean it should changed to suit.

The whole point of the original series is that while Artemis remains in a shady position relative to the law, he’s no longer a wicked criminal only out for money. He’s carrying a lot of trauma with him and has a lot to work through, but what he is not is some cold and cruel mastermind who treats others like pawns. Frankly, none of the Fowls are left in this position- to return back to some dark state of violent crime within the realm of canon would be out-of-character for any of them. That’s simply not what they are.

The series doesn’t need to be treated like so many other children’s properties in recent years (Powerpuff Girls comes to mind), reduced to some edgy and nihilistic take on what was originally a fun and hopeful story. There’s nothing wrong with a darker take! But that’s best left to the realm of the fandom. At the moment, it seems like the only current AF projects are the new graphic novel adaptions, and I’m sure Eoin is busy enough managing those.

(Also, on the Hartemis note: Seriously. Eoin isn’t going to touch Hartemis again, not when it could lead to backlash, and not with the benefit of hindsight. Artemis is a child, Holly is an adult, they met that way, the ship likely will never happen again and it shouldn’t.)

Ya’ll I’m sorry but I don’t think that future, ‘superviolent’ AF series is gonna be happening, I just don’t.
