Heya! I wrote about both the Jim Shaw and Llyn Foulkes shows at Gagosian for Art & Cake! 🥩 Destroyed, violently erased, and obscured faces, teeth and bones, hair and fur, salvaged wood, found fabric, infringed-upon Pop culture, dangerously performative capitalism, iconography and sometimes actual remnants of war, dexterity in a range of styles from the hyper-real to the expressionist, bricolage to bright realism, and a ribald visual wit that muddles up dimensionality and materials into metonyms and critique-laden caricatures—Llyn Foulkes is clearly enjoying himself, but he is not playing around. 👙 Jim Shaw for his part is not particularly optimistic about the current state of things either. His paintings, sculptures, and dimensional mixed media works all have an aggressively recombinant aesthetic in which everything is implicated—from mythological legacies to comic books, the manipulative magic of Hollywood, political malfeasance, and rampant militarism (the show’s title references nuclear war). Art Review: Annie Lapin: Contours of the Vast, at Shulamit Nazarian for Art & Cake (on view in Los Angeles through December 17) The hindquarters of a half-blue blue horse disappear into or perhaps emerge from within a gestural cloud of pigment billowing across a pastoral landscape; it is not drinking from the water to which it has been led. A latter-day, interfered with Fragonard, a compressed Corot, an accumulative Postmodern array of informational diversity and discretion. For all its compositional obfuscations, pictorial false flags, striated culs-de-sac, and trompe l’oeil winks, Tight Tied Tide (acrylic, oil, oil stick on linen, 2022) and indeed all the work in Annie Lapin’s enthusiastically busy current solo exhibition at Shulamit Nazarian are exceptionally clear in intention.
