this is how you fall in love
pairing: kuroo tetsuroo + fem!oc genre: friends into lovers fluff with slight suggestive end tags//warning: nothing major // slight suggestive at the end if you squint enough note: the obligatory trio of mine: not well edited, lowercase intended, english isnt my first language im sorry if i murder it. o wow look ive been posting back to back, ive been writing nonstop lately watch me ghost my stories in few weeks guys my brain = rotting, plus lately ive been feeling emotionally abuseddrained so i need something fluffy
listen to this is how you fall in love by jeremy zucker + chelsea cutler for maximum feels
âyouâre a lifesaver.â
kuroo huffed, eyes rolling back with a small laugh as he unlaced his sneakers and slipped the room slipper on. it was odd to see the gymnasium without any nets or balls sprawled around. the gym has been closed for a week now in preparation for the upcoming open school event and currently under the art clubâs jurisdiction. under her jurisdiction with her canvases and paints and it pained him to see her ruining his sacred place. he carried two plastic bags and holding two boba teas in the same hand. he wasnât sure which one she was more excited for; the boba, the paints she made him ran to an art supply shop or him. she reached out, the bobas in his hand exchanged as she settled it on the floor, and she squealed at the sight of the plastic bag. he frowned.
yup, not him.
tins of different colors of paint that she ran out mid painting that she forgot to buy had her dialing his number and now itâs all here. all thanks to kuroo tetsuro. she grimaced at the price tags; it was costly than her usual one. usually, she wouldâve gotten her supplies online, but desperate measure calls for desperate solution. she could always claim her expenses with the club. typical kuroo, she huffed. he always preached about getting the best, not minding the price tags but sheâll be the victim of his nonstop complaining that heâs getting broke every single day. she tucked a stray hair back and mentally counted how much she owed the man as she arranged the tins on the table.
kuroo noticed that look; same look she had when they are in the math class and he clicked his tongue, âtch, youâre not paying.â
âiâm reimbursing you with the club money,â she shook her head and reached for her bag, âplease kuroo, itâs so expensive.â
he reached for her wrist and she dropped the tote bag as he invaded her space. kuroo rested the palm of her hand right above his heart, his own around the waist and another under her chin as he tilted her chin up. his heartbeat was erratic, and she flushed. âitâs okay,â he said, softly. her lips formed into a small pout and he fought the urge to just kiss her.
their dynamic is something even kenma couldnât figure it out.
they werenât exactly dating. they are friends, close friends, and classmates. it has always been him, her and occasionally yaku; creating the chaotic duo/trio of class 5. they both played volleyballs, both captains while heâs the middle blocker, sheâs their female teamâs setter. they knew a lot of each otherâs friends from other schools; he was the reason why she dated akaashi keiji from the first place. it was selfish of kuroo to admit to bokuto a month after they started dating that he disliked the idea of them together. typical kuroo is no longer snarky, he felt lost, felt like he was losing his other half. so, he confided to his close friend, the simpleton ace.
âyou didnât make any moves, kuroo, you canât blame them.â
bokuto noted as them both stared at the two setters, playing around the fallen cherry blossoms. bokuto never seen akaashi smiled that much and kuroo could only wished that she smiled the same way to him. kuroo stared at the half bitten onigiri heâd been holding, suddenly every bite he took tasted bitter. every trace of akaashi on her gave him bitter taste. she liked wearing akaashiâs jersey; kuroo longed to see her in his own numbered jersey; sheâs his number one after all. her own jersey number is as same as akaashi. itâs not like kuroo could hate anything he did; he treated her well. akaashi was a perfect boyfriend and everyone knew. thatâs why kuroo hates him; he gave him no reason to hate the dude. it didnât last long however, they drifted apart 6 months later, sending her to kurooâs doorstep soaked in rain.
he stared at her soaked figure with no thoughts in mind.
âhe dumped me,â she said, voice hoarse and shivering.
he was alone and was about to leave for kenmaâs, but he couldnât leave her alone. dropping his keys on the small table by the door, he threw his jacket back in the closet. âcome in,â he whispered, pulling her figure in. dropping her bag on the floor, she clutched on his sleeves as she kicked off her soaking shoes. âiâm sorry, my mom isnât home and i canât find my keys,â she was a blabbering mess and he hushed her. he left her for a few minutes, coming back with a steaming towel and a clean shirt and pants. âitâs from the dryer. you can borrow my sisterâs clothes,â grabbing her hands, they ran upstairs where he took her to the bathroom. she was too quiet, so he called her name. when she looked up to him, her eyes were red. she was no longer crying, more confused and upset. her cheeks flushed and he could see her teeth chattering. he wished nothing but to throw his fist at the man. finally, he got a reason to square up the stoic man; he always hates the way nothing could riled up akaashi.
âheâs stupid for doing you like this.â
she shook her head, âitâs nobodyâs fault.â
âthen stop blaming yourself,â he ruffled her hair, a small smile appeared from the corner of her lips as she watched him disappeared closing the door behind him. he left her with the hot water running, urgently grabbing the mop and bucket from the kitchen, and wiping the trail of her soaked feet has left before it could ruin the wooden floor.
cant come over, busy, ill tell u later
kuroo texted kenma. the pudding head left him on read.
they spend the night together, sitting on the floor with pillows pilling against the end of the bed as they sat in arms. he had his tv opened to one of the late-night game show. they sat in silence, her head rested on his shoulder and her lips pressed into a tiny line. at the corner of his eyes, he could see her phoneâs notifications blaring despite being on mute. the number isnât saved but it was familiar. she deleted his number already, probably out of rage, but itâs a good step.
tell me where you want me to drop your stuff im sorry i hope youre okay y/n? i heard it was storming did you make it back home? give me a call im calling you okay?
just as like what the message stated, the unknown number called her. it startled her which startled him too. she stared down on the screen, he noticed the grip on the phone and wondered how the phone did not break yet. âcan you answer it for me?â she said, holding the phone out to the black-haired man. shocked, he took the phone and pressed the green button. he pressed the phone to his ear and heard her name being called.
âhey man,â kuroo cleared his throat, âlisten-â
âsheâs with you?â the voice- akaashi asked.
looking down on the girl who was pretending to not have any interest in the call at all, eyes focused on the gameshow, kuroo sighed.
âshe is. listen, i think you should leave her alone.â
âkuroo, i know about your feelings. for her. bokuto-san told me about it. if you think that this is the proper way to get her when sheâs vulne-â
kuroo bit the inside of his cheeks. he was offended that akaashi dared to call him out like that. âso, what? she made her pick,â the girl turned to face him, brows up wondering what they are talking about.
âthatâs low, even for you, kuroo-san.â
their eyes met. he didnât even realize how deep the cut on his palm where he had balled his fingers into a fist until she touched it. he calmed down. âyou hurt her. you have no right to say whatâs low or not. be a bigger man, leave her alone,â he muttered flatly, before ending the call. they didnât break eye contact until he realized what he had done.
âi-i shouldnât have done that.â
she shook her head, âstop blaming yourself,â a small smile on her face.
that was 3 months ago.
kuroo had made moving on easy for her. akaashi and her remained friendly, although kuroo noticed that she tended to avoid him when possible. the breakup was indeed mutual, but merely on the fact that he lost feelings. akaashi had fallen out of love with her and in love with some other girl but who was she to judge when she was falling in love with the rooster head in silence. they still hang out with bokuto and akaashi but rarely with the latter.
she made him apologized to the fukurodaniâs setter too and they remained on friendly term, still practiced together whenever they have training camps together where akaashi had admitted one training night that kuroo and her looks better together. kuroo didnât say anything, not that he knew what to reply to that (his mind scream fuck yeah we do) but shrugged at his statement. âi guess dating her made you less pain in the ass, kuroo-san,â akaashi joked as they resumed the game.
kuroo was pulled back to reality when he felt his lips brushed against something. his eyes widened when he realized what it was. a quick kiss from her. he blinked frantically, trying to comprehend what had just happened which caused the girl to laugh. âdid you just?â he asked confused by what had just happened which she nodded. she bit her bottom lip to hold herself from bursting into a laugh. âgod, you should see your face. itâs so stupid. and every girl called you the playboy captain huh?â
he huffed and rolled his eyes, âi am not. iâve been loyal to one girl for many years now, she is the one who hasnât notice me at all,â he faked his pout, refused to look her directly in the eyes, praying that she wouldnât notice his reddening cheeks.
âshe mustâve been so stupid,â she teased, her nose rubbing gently against his jawline as she rested her figure against his closer. his chin rested against her head.
âshe is,â he looked down on her, his arms around her waist tighter, âi donât think she knows this but if she leaves me, i think iâll be so broken inside. is it selfish to say that?â a small frown appeared on her face.
âi donât think she ever talked about leaving you.â
a grin grew on his face, âso you know who iâm talking about huh?â she fell into his trap. she rolled her eyes and stuck her tongue out, calling him stupid. he studied her face, his grin softened into what yaku and his volleyball team called the kuroo is stupidly in love with y/n but refused to admit face. his fingers ran into her hair which she had been growing out in few months down to her shoulder because she thinks that he likes her better that way. the way she tried to subtly put on make up to look better that the other girls whoâs shamelessly flirting with him. she was too stupid to realize that he had loved her beyond that.
he loves the rough pads on her hands from holding her paintbrushes and volleyball. he loves that she works hard for everything sheâs doing be it studying, volleyball or arts, she would put her blood, sweat and tears into it. he loves that she would wait for him to buy lunch so they can eat together in class. he would buy her a box of milk which she insisted that she doesnât need too; but he convinced it would be good for her. he wants the best for her.
he loves that all the missing clothes heâs complaining about is in the back of her closet or on her. his cream hoodie hanging behind her closet door, his random pile of t-shirts in a basket on the floor of her closet that he liked to left beside the mix pile of her shoes and his one big ass nike shoes. her room isnât messy, it is because she kept the messiness in her closet. she also like to keep random stuff of him too. the one medal he won from a science fair hung on the headboard of her bed, the misshapen looking hand wax sculpture of their hands intertwined from a funfair where she rested a purikura of them on it and a lucky bamboo plant he gave on her birthday to compromise on the no gift rule.
âfor luck,â he grinned.
unlike hers, he kept her item neatly in his drawer. your spare shirts that he borrowed and refused to return, extra towel and her toiletries, some of her drawing blocks and a small cat shaped pouch where she kept her allergies medication. mostly hidden because his annoying friends come over often and would accidentally talk about it in front of his grandparents. but, on his bedside table, he has a cup of pencils by the bed where he collected the art supplies she left behind, random markers and paintbrushes, a clay sculpture of a trinket plate she made from art club (she carved a tiny letter k in the corner beside the obvious looking genitalia drawing) and a fake plant which she was sure he will not be able to kill it.
he loves it when she wore his jersey. he lost his mind when he found out that her current season number is the same as his. heâs in love. the first time he saw her in his jersey, the number one jersey on her body was during their training. he lost concentration; mouth hung a bit. he got so flustered that he let lev served the ball straight to his head. usually, lev would be dead by now, but he doesnât mind. his nose bled but to see her kneel beside him, clutching on his own shirt screaming how stupid he is, wiping the blood away with towel, he could only say how pretty she looked. all his teammates were startled, her included. she clutched on his collar angrily; her knees stung from when she leaped down to his side, but this idiot could only smile at her with a bloody nose. âyou are fucking idiot,â she cried out angrily, pushing him away before throwing the towel on his face leaving the pleased third year laying on the floor.
he loves the way she would find a way to impress him, be it as ridiculous as the halloween costume idea she had where theyâll go as the front and end of a horse or as serious as the submitted college application to the same university he had gotten into. âyou are not getting rid of me that easily, tetsu,â the evil look on her face as she clicked the submit button send shivers down his spine.
âif you leave, i think iâll cry,â he confessed, his smile slowly died.
âkuroo tetsuro is going to cry after me?â she teased. he nodded eagerly. âdoes kuroo tetsuro realized that we are literally moving into the same university? i couldnât catch a break from him,â she faked her annoyance which he playfully avenged by sending her on the floor laughing as he tickled her. tears trickled down her cheeks as she begged him to stop, screaming to get away from his grip. âplease, kuroo, iâm going to pee if you donât stop!â he obliged, tears prickled the corner of his own eyes from laughing too much. straddling her waist, he gathered her wrists in one hand over her head. âapologize and said that kuroo tetsuro is the best man in your life or i swear iâll make you pee,â he threatened her playfully, wiggling the fingers of his free hand close to her waist. her eyes widened in fears.
âthatâs not fair!â
âapologize first.â
âfine!â she pouted, âiâm sorry, i wonât make fun of you again. now get off me!â
he raised his eyebrow, âandddd?â
âannddd-â a teasing smile appeared on her face as she said the next 5 words that send him to mars and back; âi love you kuroo tetsuro.â
he froze in shock. he heard the words before but never in this way; never for him.
finally, i think i got the calculation, love you yaku! lev youâre adorable but so stupid, i love it! thank you for letting me borrow your game, kenma. youâre the best, love ya!
the grip on her wrists loosened. taking advantage of his shock state, she pushed him back, straddling him by the waist, pinning his own hands above his head, giving him the taste of his own medicine. âiâm not going to leave your sorry ass, tetsu. i hope you donât regret it,â she leaned down, capturing his lips with a longer kiss. letting go of his wrist, her hand went immediately into his rooster hair while another cupped his cheek, deepening their kiss. she could feel his cold palm resting against her bare waist and she shuddered. between the kisses, he heard her whispering his name. âkuroo, do you love me too?â she asked so innocently with kisses between the words but the way she grabbed a handful of his hand in a fist felt so dirty, eliciting a strangled moan from the back of his throat. she pulled back, staring down on his eyes as his lips moved.
âi love you too.â
nothing in his hazel eye but sincerity. he groaned when she pulled herself out of his reach, missing her warm body as she laughed. straightening her sweater back, pulling her hair back up into a tighter ponytail before she picked up the paintbrush she dropped. the paintbrush left a white stain on the court. as if kuroo wasnât here, whimpering underneath her a minute ago, she continued her work. âi need to finish the mural by this week and youâre not exactly helping me,â she warned him, pointing the wet brush his direction. through the corner of her eyes, he was propped on his elbows, still staring at her, causing her to blush profusely. it annoyed him that she would tease him, then leaving him high and dry. before she could crack open the new paint tin, he ignored her warning as he tackled her back into his arms.
breathless against her lips, he told her to continue later. the urgency and rawness of his voice made her putty immediately. looking up the man, she pouted her lips.
âkuroo-san,â she whined as he captured her bottom lips.
he elicited a soft moan from the girl. he grinned against her lips. a hand rested firmly beside her head while another snaked under the sweater. there will be bruise tomorrow, she was sure of it, he will make sure of it.
âit will be quick, baby. i promise.â
she has no objection.

Chapter 6: Garden Daisy Means âI Share Your Sentimentsâ
Alex and Philip played in the park the next day. He pushed Philip on the swings, they tossed a ball back and forth, making Alex feel very stereotypical, so he taught Philip how to make flower crowns from the little daisies in the grass.
Philip was especially excited about making the daisy chains, telling Alex animatedly about making one at school tomorrow: âYeah, Theo loves flowers, so Iâll make her one, because she is my bestest friend.â
âIâm sure, sheâll appreciate that,â Alex smiled.
âAre you going to make one for Mr. Thomas?â Philip asked.
Alex shook his head: âProbably not, buddy. I donât think Thomas is much of a flower crown person, but itâs a sweet thought of you.â
âWhy?â
âWhat? Iâm going to need more context than that, Pip.â
âWhy doesnât Mr. Thomas want a flower crown?â Philip asked, looking heartbroken about it as he then also asked, âIs a flower crown not a fun gift for your bestest friends?â
âNo, no, Pip, itâs a wonderful gift for Theo tomorrow, but are Theo and Thomas really the same?â he tried to do damage control.
Philip thought about it, then said: âNo, but they both think my art is the coolest and they like hearing about dinos and Uncle Laf said Mr. Thomas really liked the flowers you gave him and that he was adorable over them, so he must like the flowers. Donât you think, so Papa?â
âUncle Laf said what?â Alex was unable to help himself, immediately backtracking, not wanting to involve his kid in that, âNever mind, not important. You make some really good points, Pip,â he had to acknowledge that, but he wasnât giving Thomas a flower crown.
âI do?â Pip sounded excited about it.
âYes, you do,â building up self esteem was good, âBut Papa is probably not going to do that, because there are no flowers around the office and they will wilt if I make it now,â he wasnât going to make Philip sad, so hopefully that would be enough.
Philip hummed thoughtfully, then shook off the entire thing: âI suppose youâre right.â
They went home soon after, eating dinner, before Alex read Philip a bedtime story. When Philip had drifted off, he gave him a kiss on the forehead: âSleep tight, Pip. Youâre going places.â
In return Philip snuggled closer into his pillow with a soft sigh. Alex smiled at the sleeping kid, before retreating downstairs, planning to work a bit on his essay about biphobia within the queer community.
He had written a few good paragraphs when his phone buzzed. He picked it up and smiled when he saw it was a message from Thomas: âSince you told me that if I wanted to pay so bad, I would have to ask you out and because I said I would, here is me formally asking if you have time next Saturday?
Alex giggled at the wording, before shooting back: âdorkâ
âme and pip usually hang out on saturdays, but i think hercs free to babysitâ
Thomas replied: âI was hoping to take you on a picnic, if Philip wants to come and you donât mind, heâs more than welcomeâ
That was something Alex hadnât seen coming. He would love if Thomas and Pip got along and it seemed Thomas was willing to spend time with his son, but he worried that the man had only offered out of guilt.
He took a quick screenshot and send it to Angelic, asking: âis this thomas being nice and awkward abt it even though he doesnt mean it?â
After a few seconds, she replied: âHe wouldnât lie about shit like that, now reply before he gets anxious about your silenceâ
âyes, maâamâ
Alex quickly went back to the chat with Thomas and send: âill ask if he wants to come, but iwould love to take you up on the invitation :Dâ
âGoodâ
âTalk to you tomorrow?â
âyeah, see you thenâ
âgoodnightâ
âSleep tight, Alexâ
Alex sat for a moment smiling dumbly at his phone, looking forwards to tomorrow to see Thomas again as he got up to get ready for bed.
The next day, he quickly put his stuff in his office, before going to the break room, knowing that Thomas would be in soon and meet him there. It always took a few minutes, so Alex busied himself with making coffee, trying not to look at the door.
He was just taking his first sip when Thomas came in. Almost choking he managed to wave as he greeted: âHi.â
âHello, be careful there,â Thomas smirked, noticing Alex struggle with the coffee.
âShove off,â Alex told him, finally swallowing the sip that had betrayed him.
âNah, donât wanna,â Thomas shrugged, making himself coffee, âHow was your weekend? Did you get terrorized by Lafayette as well?â
âGod, he got you too?â Alex asked.
âNaturally,â Thomas replied, âHe was at my house first thing in the morning on Saturday, I think he had a notepad.â
âHe is such an idiot,â Alex facepalmed.
âYouâre telling me,â Thomas laughed.
âBut no, my weekend was good,â Alex said after a pause, âI was over at Elizaâs on Saturday, she and Maria were watching Pip and on Sunday me and Pip went to the park. You?â
âWell, on Saturday I hosted Laf, unprepared, but it was alright,â he was not telling Alex he had been draped over the couch, dramatically recounting the entire night like a teenager, âThen on Sunday I read a bit,â and botheredJames about date ideas, which he did not appreciate, before bothering him about what would bea good message to send, which he also didnât appreciate; he added mentally.
âAre you reading anything interesting?â Alex asked.
âYeah, Iâm reading Frankenstein, just a classic I never got around to,â Thomas answered.
Alex lit up and their conversation went on, discussing the want for bodily autonomy that Mary Shelley as a woman in that era must have had and how that was integrated into the book and how the story of being otheredcould be applied to other minorities today.
The rest of the week sped by like usual. Their lunches together had felt a bit odd at first like it had gained a deeper meaning after the date, but then Thomas had spilled his coffee and Alex had snorted and inhaled a few crumbs, so that had worn off quite quickly.
When Alex had asked Philip if he wanted to come with him and Thomas on a picnic the boy had been beyond excited, which made that easy for Alex.
Now was just the issue of making sure that they had a kite for Pip, the drawing of Mr. Thomas he had made and wanted to give to the man, and sunscreen on as well as a jacket with them, because the weather was mostly good, but there might be winds later on.
Thomas came to pick them up in his car, it was a bit flashy, but the normal amount of flashy for Thomas. Still Alex said: âHi there, show off.â
âAnd proud of it,â Thomas just grinned back, before he could say anything more though, Philip came running out of the house, yelling: âMr. Thomas, Mr. Thomas, do you know how to fly a kite? Will you fly it with me?â
âWow, calm down, kiddo,â Thomas said to the kid clinging to his waist.
âSorry, Mr. Thomas.â
âItâs okay, and you can call me Thomas if you want to, you know that, right?â
âBut itâs rude to not call people Mister,â Philip frowned.
âWell, itâs okay with me, I am hereby giving you permission to call me Thomas,â Thomas told the kid gently, the whole Mr. Thomas made him feel old.
Philip nodded, then said: âOkay, Uncle Thomas. Do you know how to fly a kite?â
Okay, that was- that was an upgrade that Thomas was unsure of how to deal with, so he just ignored it: âYeah, I know how to fly a kite. Do you have one?â
âYes, itâs the bestest one, it gots all the colors of the rainbow on it!â the kid was clearly beyond excited about it.
âWow, that sounds super awesome, kiddo.â
âWhat is also super awesome, is car safety,â Alex interrupted them, âI got Pipâs booster seat, do you mind if I put that on the backseat?â
âOf course not, need help?â Thomas answered.
âNah, Iâve done this before,â Alex grinned.
With Philipâs booster seat firmly in place and the kid buckled in, they got into the car. Thomas holding Alexâs door open with a flourish, making Alex blush as he called him a dork.
âNot a dork, darlinâ, just Southern hospitality,â Thomas winked at him, letting his accent coat his words heavily.
And with that he closed Alexâs door and got into the car, driving off in the direction of the nearby park Alex often visited with Pip.
After they arrived Alex got Philip out of the car, while Thomas grabbed Alexâs bag andan actual basket out of the back. When he noticed Alex staring with a raised brow, he shrugged: âYou were clichĂ©, so I thought why not.â
âItâs very picturesque.â
âPapa, what is pictuu- pictuu- that word?â Philip asked.
Breaking the eyecontact with Thomas, Alex explained: âWell, sometimes things look just like a picture, theyâre put in on purpose to be pretty, like with a drawing. So, we call it picturesque.â
Philip hummed thoughtfully, before he said: âOkay, can I go on the swings?â
âSure, buddy, but first we go find a spot to sit and maybe eat something, okay?â Alex said, taking Pipâs hand, holding his other out to Thomas with a raised eyebrow.
Thomas took it with a smile, leading them to a spot near the little pond in the park, where a tree provided both shade and an easy marker to find it again if Philip wandered off on his own, which Alex was grateful for.
Out of the basket came a checkered blanket, which made Alex laugh as he and Thomas struggled to lay in down in the wind. But there were also sandwiches, orange juice, brownies, fruit salad and a thermos with coffee.
âWow, you thought of everything, didnât you,â Alex whistled.
He got an eye crinkle smile in return as Thomas said: âI try,â before turning to Philip and asking, âWhat sort of sandwich do you want, kiddo? I got PB and J, ham and cheese and one with chicken and eggplant.â
âMay I please have a PB and J sandwich?â
âSo, polite,â Thomas commented, handing him the sandwich, âHere you go. Alex?â
âUhm, can I have one with chicken?â
âOf course, there you are,â Thomas handed him a sandwich, before taking a chicken one as well, nodding a cheers to the others before eating it.
It wasnât really quiet while they ate, neither Alex nor Philip had a talent for keeping their mouths shut while Thomas was comfortable enough to mix himself into the conversation, either to argue fondly with Alex or to encourage Philip to keep going.
When most of the food was gone, Philip asked: âCan I go on the swings now, Papa?â
Alex checked if the swings were in sight, they were actually quite close and since he was trying to let Pip be more independent, he nodded: âYeah, just be sure to stay in sight and to come tell me if youâre going somewhere else, okay?â
âOkay, Papa.â
âCan you pinky promise me?â he might be trying to let Pip be more independent, but he still worried about his son.
âPinky promise,â it was adorable how serious Philip looked while making the pinky promise.
Then Philip skipped off to the swings to play. Alex watched him closely until he got there, then a few moments more just to be sure.
âItâs incredible to see how much you love him,â the comment startled Alex for a moment and he asked: âWha?â
âJust- you love Philip so much and you can see it every time you two interact,â Thomas explained, âItâs kinda amazing to see. You know, with a big family it wasnât all that one on one, so seeing how much attention you give him is weird â in the best way of course.â
Alex blushed, no one really every complimented his parenting much, with the trans thing and the single parent and the busy job, most of the PTA moms looked down on him, so it was refreshing to hear: âOh, uhm, thanks, really means a lot.â
âNo problem,â Thomas smiled, âCoffee?â
âYeah, thanks,â Alex held out his cup and watched it get filled, nodding to Thomas gratefully as he took a sip.
It was quiet for a moment, then a thought popped into Thomasâs head, making him a bit unsure and he asked: âPhilip is calling me Uncle Thomas, you okay with that?â
âAs long as you are. Pipâs never had a conventional family, Iâm not sure he knows exactly what the word is supposed to mean, so he just calls adults he knows well that,â Alex explained, before quickly adding, âIf you want him to stop, I can talk to him.â
âOh, no, I donât mind â honored, actually â just, you know, checking in.â
âOkay.â
Then it was quiet again. They both stared at the little playground where Philip was now playing tag with a few other kids, obviously done with swinging on the swings.
The sun was out and there were birds in the trees that were chirping, they were sitting on a checkered blanket, nearly completely leaning on one another and Alex was enamored by how picturesque this actually was, even if it had been teasing before.
He remembered Thomas complimenting his date and how relieved and excited that had made him, so he leaned more into Thomasâs side and softly said: âThis is pretty amazing, thanks for asking me out again.â
Alex couldn't see it, but Thomas grinned as he replied: âWell, I am glad for inviting you, the company makes it much better.â
âHow romantic,â Alex told him, trying, and failing, not to be touched by the comment.
âI try,â Thomas merely replied.
âSo,â Alex looked around for something to talk about when he spotted the daisies in the grass and was reminded of his trip to the park with Pip last week, âopinions on flower crowns?â
âWhat?â Thomas sounded very confused.
He sat up straighter and plucked a few flowers, making a chain and holding it up: âOpinions on flower crowns?â
Thomas laughed for a second, then saw Alexâs face andexclaimed: âOh my God, youâre being serious.â
Alex laughed too, before schooling his face into a more serious expression: âA trustworthy source told me these are very great gifts.â
âOh, and who might that source be?â Thomas challenge.
âWell that would be my very own flesh and blood, Philip Hamilton, UncleThomas,â Alex emphasized the title teasingly.
Thomas grinned: âOh, you should have said so, canât argue with such an esteemed member of society.â
They both laughed again as Alex plucked more daisies and made a flower crown. It might have been a bit of a joke, but he had never known when to stop and he wasnât going to start now, so he concentrated on braiding the flowers together while Thomas watched with an amused smile.
âHere, a pretty flower crown, for a pretty boy,â Alex said, handing Thomas the flower crown, taking much delight in how he had a front row seat to a blush blooming over Thomasâs entire face.
Mutely Thomas took the flower crown, mentally trying not to die at Alexâs face and words, which was really hard.
âWell, arenât you going to put it on?â Alex asked, it was kinda mean to tease at this point, but he couldn't help it when Thomas looked like that.
âYe- yeah, naturally,â Thomas managed, putting the flower crown on as he regained his bearings, âSo, how do I look?â his voice was still a bit squeaky.
âAh, just like I thought,â Alex smiled, âbeautiful.â
âYou canât just say things like that, Alex,â Thomas tried to hide his face.
âYes, yes, I can. I donât know if you know this, but Iâm kind of known for always speaking my mind and being honest. Canât help it if itâs true.â
âI hate you.â
âI sure hope thatâs not true or this is going to be awkward.â
It was a teasing reply, but both stilled for a moment, before Thomas slowly and softly said: âNo, I- I didnât mean that, youâre- youâre pretty alright.â
âPretty alright⊠Hm, Iâll take it,â Alex was smirking, trying to play off the fact that his heart was beating like a marathon runnerâs as relief flooded through his veins.
Thomas shoved him over and said: âYouâre an idiot.â
âNow that- that I already knew,â Alex grinned, before getting up and looking back to the playground to check in on Philip.
He didnât have to search much, because the boy was just running their way, yelling: âPapa, Papa, I slayed the dragon.â
âWow, really buddy? Thatâs so cool,â Alex caught him as the kid practically tripped into his arms as he gestured wildly while recounting his epic encounter with a dragon and a witch and some fairies who were âthe coolest, Papa, you should have seen then, they went pow pow and it was so cool.â
Then he spotted Thomas with the flower crown perched on his head and he smiled widely: âDid you give Uncle Thomas a flower crown like I said, Papa?â
âYeah, I did, Pip. You were right, it was a great gift.â
âI have to agree, you have way better ideas than your Papa,â Thomas budded in.
Philipâs smile widened: âReally? I think so, but Papa is an adult and people always say adults know better.â
âWell, in some instances, adults have more experiences so they can make better decisions, but that doesnât mean theyâre always right,â Thomas said, âKids can have interesting ideas too. Think of it like painting, experiences are different colors, but you donât need every color, you can just make a more elaborate picture with more.â
Alex watched as Philip took a moment to think about it, before he nodded in understanding and saying: âSo, I may not have all the colors yet, but I can make a good picture?â
âYeah, exactly,â Thomas was grinning so broadly that Alex was going to loose his mind with how much he adored Thomas and Philip interacting and how fucking cute it was.
Suddenly Philipâs eyes lit up and he said: âPapa, I forgot to give Uncle Thomas his picture.â
âYou can give it now, buddy,â Alex told him, reaching over to the bag he brought himself and digging through it.
âMy what?â Thomas asked in the background.
âI made you a picture,â Philip was bouncing in place waiting for Alex to find it. When he did, he handed it to Pip, who in turn handed it to Thomas.
âItâs you,â he said, âYouâre all purple, because you like purple like me and you have big hair like Uncle Laf and Uncle Herc do, though Uncle Hercâs is smaller and I gave you a book and a laptop ad then I thought planes would be cool, so I added those.â
âWow, Philip, this is amazing,â Thomas said, âI feel like I should donate it to a museum, but something is missing for that.â
âWhat?â Philipâs face fell slightly.
âI need it signed, canât have a masterpiece and forget who made it. What if you get famous? I want to be able to brag that I got an original Philip Hamilton drawing,â he dug around in his pocket and got out the purple pen he used to sign things when he was annoyed at Washington.
Philip took it excitedly, messily scrawling his name at the bottom, before handing it back: âHere, for you.â
âTruly, Iâm speechless,â Thomas said, âIâm going to have to frame this.â
âYou will?â Philipâs eyes were as big as plates.
âI am a man of my word and I promise,â Thomas told him, holding up a pinky. He had alreadyfigured out that promise meant the most to Philip at this age.
Philip happily interlocked their fingers, before Thomas carefully put the drawing away. Once it was gone, Philip asked: âCan we go kiting now?â
âWe first have to put it together if you want to do that, so while I do that why donât you drink some more juice,â Alex said, already pouring juice in a cup for Pip.
âThank you, Papa,â Philip started drinking happily.
He struggled with putting the kite together, but luckily Thomas had more experience in putting together kites, citing his big family. So, they had it assembled by the time Philip had finished his juice.
Alex forced Philip to eat a brownie too. It might not be the healthiest, but he wouldnât let Philip run around on an empty stomach if he could help it.
âI have no clue how to do this,â Alex confessed holding the kite. He had bought it on a whim in the supermarket about twoweeksago. However, he had no childhood memories to draw from on how to do this.
âFortunately for you, I do,â Thomas said, taking the kite from him, âHere, let me take this.â
Alex gladly gave the task away and watched as Thomas gave Philip the handle of the kite and instructed him on what to do as he threw the kite into the air.
Philip whooped when it stayed up and Thomas cheered as well. Alex took out his phone and sneakily took a picture of the two, before cheering as well.
He flew the kite for half an hour before it went wrong. It was nothing big, just a sudden gust of wind that ripped the kite from Philipâs small hands and carried the kite away from them until it dropped into the water.
They looked at the kite for a second, before Philip turned to Alex with big eyes: âPapa, we have to save the kite.â
Looking at the water, Alex shuddered before he replied: âIâm sorry, Pip, but I canât retrieve it for you. I think youâre going to have to say goodbye to the kite.â
âI can go get it, please, Papa,â there were tears gathering in Philipâs eyes.
In his mind images of Philip drowning flashed and quite harshly he said: âNo!â cringing as Philip startled slightly. In a softer tone, he repeated: âNo, Pip. You canât swim, Iâm not letting you in the water, because itâs dangerous and your clothes will get wet.â
âBut- but the kite,â Philip argued.
âIt was an accident, but we lost the kite,â Alex tried to break the news gently.
They were distracted by Thomas, who said: âI can go get the kite.â
âWhat?â âWill you do that, Uncle Thomas!â
âNo, I canât ask that of you,â Alex said, âYouâll ruin your clothes and itâs in the water and it might get cold later, itâs too much to ask.â
âIâll be fine, Alex. Unlike Philip here, I can swim, so itâs fine if I fall. And this isnât a natural pond anyway,â Thomas explained, âItâs made to trap rainwater so the neighborhood doesnât get flooded, but because itâs in a kids park, itâs shallower. I donât think my shorts will get wet.â
âYou really donât have to do this,â Alex pressed again, making sure that Thomas didnât feel obligated just because Philip would be mildly upset about it.
âI know,â Thomas smiled as he sat down to toe off his shoes and socks.
Before he stepped into the water, he looked at Pip and seriously said: âCan you watch over our spot and your Papa for me while I go rescue the kite?â
Philip nodded, equally serious: âWith my life.â
âGood,â Thomas chuckled, then set his first step.
He had been right about the depth of the pond and got to the kite without any difficulties. More onlookers had turned their attention to the water, but Thomas tried to ignore them as he saved the kite.
Returning to the shore he handed it to Philip, who beamed: âThank you so somuch, Uncle Thomas.â
âNo problem, kiddo, though I donât think we can kite any more with the kite all wet,â he replied.
âThatâs okay, I can still swing,â Philip said.
As the kid ran off again to play, Alex turned to Thomas: âReally, thank you, you didnât have to do it, but thanks.â
âDid you see Philipâs smile? Worth it, really,â Thomas assured him.
Alex smiled, he didnât think his heart could contain all the affection he had for Thomas in that moment, so he just hugged the man and gave him a peck on the cheek.
Thomas gently touched the spot Alex had kissed before smiling like he was the happiest man on earth, which only made Alex scream more internally.
They returned to their blanket and watched Philip play. After a few minutes of silence, Thomas lightly said: âSo, water. Not a fan?â
âAh, no, not really,â Alex replied, not sure on what to say.
âYou donât have to tell me, just good to keep in mind,â Thomas told him gently.
âOh, no, itâs okay, just not something I talk about much,â Alex shrugged.
Thomas repeated: âYou donât have to tell me, really.â
âI know,â Alex assured him, âYou know how Iâm an immigrant, right?â
âYeah.â
âWell, I come from the Caribbean and uhm- You see, there was this hurricane that hit my island when I was seventeen. Itâs- uh, itâs not something Iâd recommend living through,â he told Thomas.
âOh wow, I remember that being on the news,â Thomas felt like he had maneuvered himself into an awkward position. He was bad at comfort, with John he could relate, but here he was way out of his depths.
âItâs okay now, I got over it- mostly,â Alex shrugged, trying to move on, âJust donât like water or storms that much.â
Thomas nodded, staying quiet. Instead he slung an arm over Alexâs shoulders and let the man snuggle close as he stared off in the direction Philip was in, though Thomas wasnât sure if he was seeing much, so he kept an eye on the kid just in case.
After a moment, Alex asked: âDo you have one of those brownies left?â
âWhat? Huh, oh yeah. Here.â
âThank you, these are amazing.â
âWhy thank you, I made them.â
âYou did?â
âYou donât have to sound so surprised.â
âIâm not,â a beat, then Alex said, âWell, I am, but itâs more pleasantly surprised than anything else. I didnât know you baked.â
Thomas was glad for the change in topic and that the atmosphere hadnât been ruined by his comment. So he replied: âItâs calming, repetitive and you have something nice at the end.â
âNever pegged you to be a stress baker,â Alex commented.
âAccording to Jemmy itâs one of my more redeeming qualities,â Thomas joked.
Alex laughed: âJames is good in pinning people, Iâll take his word.â
âHe thought you to be annoying and a dick, so I donât think you wanna do that,â Thomas raised a brow at him.
âSchematics,â Alex waved his hand, âAnd in my defense, I was annoying back then, maybe even a bit of a dick, butI just aged like fine wine.â
âWhatever helps you sleep at night.â
âI thought you were supposed to be on my side.â
âWhat can I say, Iâm a man of many faces.â
âYouâre a dork, thatâs what you are.â
âMaybe so,â Thomas smirked, before looking over to the playground again. Philip was going down the slide, before running around with another kid. Thomas said: âHe looks like heâs having fun.â
âYeah, yeah, he does,â Alex agreed, snuggling closer into Thomasâs side.
Thomas planted a kiss on the top of his head and Alex was pretty sure he was one day going to melt out of affection.
Philip stopped running for a moment, to turn to them and wave excitedly. Alex waved back and so did Thomas. Alex couldn't stop the smile on his face, this was nice, so much nicer than he ever thought he was going to get after Johnâs death.
He send a quick look to the sky, slightly wistful, before fully draping himself over Thomas, earning a not-that-offended offended squawk that he ignored in favor of draping even more until Thomas gave in and let them both topple over.
Alex vowed that he was going to try to hold on to this for as long as possible.
I am not a parent btw, I feel like I should have stated that early, also donât take this fic as parenting advise. I try to write Good Parent!Alex, but that doesnât mean it will be entirely, bc, again, no experience in this field.
Btw, Philip not understanding Uncle and Auntie and being over at the otherâs houses so much is a concept I love, bc itâs a very queer way to raise a kid. Sure, Alex is his primary care giver and dad and stuff, but a village raises a kid and- ugh, I love found family dynamics.
Also this is getting incredibly fluffy, I was worried this was going to be too dark for me with my other fics, but no within a few chapters the angst has made place for this. Love that for me *gay peace sign*

Fic-Mas Bonus Round: Hybrid, Again
Yeah, I lied XD Christmas Eve bonus round! And because everyone seemed really enthusiastic about this fic, I picked two chunks of Hybrid for you all. (And if I were to consider Fic-Mas: NYE Edition, Iâd definitely like to know what you would all like more of - your choices are more Hybrid, any of the Unexpected Second Life fics, All These Broken Things, or seeing if I can dig up something from Memento Mori.)Â
Onwards!
(This happens before Jasper bites Alice, after Aliceâs first day at Forks High.)
Dinner that night was quiet â Dad and Simon seemed worried about my first day of school when I hadnât reported making loads of friends, and loving everything about Forks High; I had chosen to omit my interactions with Edward Cullen and Rosalie Hale when they asked.
Cynthia did most of the talking during the meal, and was slowly painting me a picture of her life â she was a good student, very popular, and loved any sort of club or co-curricular. Definitely a joiner. And absolutely bursting with excitement to start ninth grade next year, and finally be in high school.
âSo, who did you hang out with today?â Cynthia finally turned to me. Her dinner plate was barely touched â sheâd been talking too much to eat â whilst I was on my second helping.
âI didnât,â I said, stabbing a piece of carrot.
âReally?â Cynthia frowned. âWho did you sit with at lunch?â
I wanted to smile at her middle-school view of the world. As if there was nothing more horrifying than sitting alone at lunch. And then I wanted to punch something because in a town this small, Cynthia probably had more friends at Forks High than I would ever have, and she was only fourteen.
âI went to the library. I need to catch up in a few subjects,â I shrugged. âAnd the cafeteria food was really bad.â
âItâs nice to know that things donât change,â Simon chuckled. âForks High always made the worst mac and cheese known to man. That stuff was a hate crime.â
âYou said you werenât behind in your classes,â Dad said to me, frowning. I guess as a teacher himself, the idea of his own daughter failing her classes was a pretty bad one, though I was a little curious why Cynthia and I attended a local public school when Dad taught at a fancy private school.
âJust a chapter or two in Algebra, and I think a little in Biology,â I said. âNothing that I canât get caught up in.â
âOkay, but if you find yourself overwhelmed or really behind, we can get you a tutor over the summer,â Dad said. âI looked over your transcripts, there are some gaps in your schoolwork weâll have to address at some point.â
That was a polite way of putting it. There werenât gaps in my schoolwork, there were great gaping holes. Even from before Mom died. But afterwards, there was foster care, time on the streets, my time at the hospital â I donât think I ever technically attended sixth or eighth grade.
âYou have your doctorâs appointment in the morning, Alice,â Simon jumped in. âI had an in with the best doctor in town, and he agreed to see you tomorrow first thing. Just so we can get your medications sorted.â
âGreat,â I said unenthusiastically. Another doctor, paging through my endless file claiming I was completely bat-shit nuts. I knew Iâd been living on borrowed time as far as medical intervention went. There was an entire pharmacy of psychiatric meds locked up in Dad and Simonâs room that the hospital had sent with me.
Simon had been overwhelmed by the sheer number of them, and the three pages of contradictory instructions, that heâd decided not to drug me until we spoke to a doctor in Forks. Which was definitely a good thing, since the medications the hospital had me on left me drooling into my pillow most of the time.
Or screaming for help.
âCarlisle is a really good doctor,â Simon said kindly, obviously seeing the look on my face. âActually, an amazing doctor. Way better than we should be able to get out in the sticks. And heâs a good person â he wonât do anything that doesnât sound right to him, and youâre comfortable with. I promise.â
âEveryone says that,â I said, suddenly full and wishing I hadnât eaten quite so much. âThey say, âWe just want whatâs best for you, Mary-Aliceâ. Then they find out I stabbed a doctor and they canât sedate me fast enough.â
Rice fell out of Cynthiaâs mouth when I said that. âYou stabbed someone?â she said, her eyes wide.
âCynthia,â Dad warned, but all eyes were on me.
Cynthia ignored him. âWhy?â she asked, leaning forward. And I felt it, like something physical that wrapped itself around me. The memories; the fear and complete hopelessness. It was like I was being smothered. As if my ghosts werenât already carved into my skin permanently, where everybody could see.
âCynthia, enough,â Simon said sternly.
âNo one ever cares about the why,â I said softly, looking at the placemats, a swirling pattern of orange and red. I remembered doing it, grabbing the little plastic scalpel, slashing from his ear to his chin, and being dragged away. Being drugged, strapped down and ignored, like some kind of animal; nobody ever asked me why Iâd done such a thing, just assuming that it was my fault. âCan I be excused?â
âCertainly,â Dad said, looking worried. âDo you want us to bring you up some dessert?â
âKey-lime pie,â Simon offered. âMy mom made it, so not quite as good as mine, but still worthy.â
I shook my head. âNo thanks.â
I slipped out of the dining room and upstairs, pausing on the stairwell to hear Dad and Simon lecturing Cynthia about pushing too hard and asking too many questions. That I had had a very hard life, whilst hers had been comfortable and happy.
Sometimes, everything that had happened hit me like a truck, and I just⊠I kind of just went through the motions. Locked every emotion down so that I didnât have to deal with any of it. The pain, the terror, the complete misery. It was easier just to feel nothing.
I showered and climbed into bed, the scent of flowers wrapping around me. I thought about asking Simon for one of my sleeping pills, but that required energy and interaction, neither were things that I was up for.
Instead, I just curled into a ball and pretended to sleep when Dad and Simon checked on me, separately, later. Â I didnât manage to fall asleep until much later, after everyone else had gone to bed, slipping into soupy dreams of white rooms and not being able to move.
And then the dreamscape changed, clicking into place.
A vision.
There was no specific way I could tell the difference between a dream and a vision of the future, but I always knew the difference. I had no control over them â some nights, it would be an unending string of visions to wade through, and then nothing for weeks at a time. Mom had tried everything, but there was no way to instigate them, or to choose who or what I would see. Whatever my gift was, it did what it wanted.
I was in a living room with fancy art on the walls, and a piano in the entry way.
The vampires were gathered there â Rosalie Hale and curly haired bear-man were seated on the couch, though she looked agitated enough to jump up and pace at any second. A slightly older woman with light brown hair was seated at a small writing desk, tapping away at a laptop absently, with her attention on the group; Edward Cullen was standing with a light-haired man in front of an actual marble fireplace. And the blonde-boy was sitting in the window, staring out into the night.
âDoes she know?â the man asked the red-headed boy with a gentle, patient manner that I wanted to like immediately.
âI donât know,â Edward said, looking frustrated. âHer thoughts jumped around a lot. She never thought âvampireâ. But she was alarmed by us.â
âWhat did you hear?â the woman asked, closing the laptop.
âAt lunch, she hated the food, wasnât particularly impressed with Forks in general, happier to be with her father and his family that sheâd admit to herself. Then it was alarm bells, her trying to work out an escape plan. She was very, very concerned about Bella and her safety.â
âShe warned Bella, verbally,â Rosalie pointed out. âTo be careful.â
âHm. And you had a class with her? Was she well then?â the man asked Edward.
âDistressed. She had scars that were seen by others when she was changing. Bella said that they were âbadâ, over her back and her thighs. The other girls were focusing on a particularly nasty one on the back of her leg, so I donât know the extent. I heard something about a hospital, and when I mentioned hospitals in passing, she became agitated.â
âI spoke with her step-father, and he expressed concern over her psychological state. Apparently, sheâs had a history of mental illness and abuse, and he wanted someone he trusted to see her and work out how to help,â the man said. âFrom her records, sheâs quite disturbed, though he repeatedly assured me that her behavior has been absolutely normal since she arrived.â The man looked over at the boy in the window. âJasper, did you notice anything?â
He looked over. âCuriosity, agitation, worry, depression â the usual teenage maelstrom,â he said slowly, disinterestedly.
âIf sheâs mentally unbalanced, it wouldnât be hard to stage an âaccidentâ,â Rosalie said archly. âWe wouldnât even have to move; it could just be one of those things. She wouldnât be much of a loss.â
âWould be pretty rough on her family,â the big guy murmured, holding his hands up when Rosalie shot him a look. âJust sayinâ, Rose. She only just got here.â
âI donât think we need to worry about her that much, just yet,â the man said finally. âItâs always a possibility, but Edward, you didnât hear her identify us; some humans are just more in-tune to their instincts. And thereâs a possibility that her medical status can be used to our advantage if she becomes a problem.â
âWhat about Bella?â Edward asked immediately.
âIf Bella could befriend her, that would allow you more access to what sheâs thinking. That would be enough for the time being,â he concluded. âAt a rough guess, I doubt Mary-Alice Brandon is going to pose much of a problem.â
Edward spun around to Jasper, a glare on his face. âReally?â he snapped.
âWhat?â the woman stood up, looking worried. I wondered if that was her default state of being.
âHe thinks she smelt delicious,â Edward spat.
âAnother singer?â the man stepped forward, looking downright alarmed.
Jasper heaved a sigh and shook his head. âNo, nothing like that,â he said, in that slow, dull manner. âJust a stray thought. Nothing will happen, I promise.â
âMaybe Bella should stay away for a few days,â Edward said grouchily, still giving Jasper a filthy look.
âLeave him alone, Edward,â Rosalie snapped.
âPlease, like you wouldnât break him into little pieces if he slipped up again,â Edward snapped back, and Jasper rolled his eyes and stood up to leave.
âAre we done?â he asked, and when the man nodded, he left the room, leaving the others to bicker in peace; everyone slowly faded away as my vision turned back into my dreams.
//
(This scene is far in the future - like Ch 13. This thing is The Slowest Burn.)
My pitching was clearly stronger than they anticipated; at least, the surprise on Emmettâs face as the ball smacked into the palm of his hand implied so. It obviously wasnât as impressive as the pitches thrown by Rosalie or Jasper, but still better than they expected.
Of course, once all the Cullens acquiesced to my participation in the baseball game, Edward vocally encouraged Bella to join in as well.
âIf Alice is playing, Bella can play,â was his argument, whilst Bella stood at his side, looking uncomfortable. Hell, she always looked uncomfortable. I wondered if anyone had ever introduced her to the concept of sweatpants and ice cream.
âAlice is less likely to drop dead if she takes a fastball to the face,â Rosalie scowled. I eyeballed the blonde; that statement felt very much like Rosalie was trying to work out how to dispose of me.
âFractured skull at best,â I agreed serenely.
âBella is still rehabbing her leg, Edward,â Carlisle said gently.
--
It happened in a second; the ball sailed from Edwardâs hands, and Bella swung. She swung too early, and the ball flew past and cracked her across the face. I heard her gasp of pain, of the blood that seeped from her nose instantly, the sound of the bat hitting the soft ground.
And I looked around to see five hungry vampires staring at the blood that was pouring from her nose, Bellaâs hands cupped over her face.
Esme and Rosalie were backing away; Esmeâs face was concerned but strained, whilst Rosalieâs was blank â her attention was on Emmett, who had taken two steps forward before retreating, his eyes completely black.
Edward and Carlisle were focused on Bella â a broken nose was one of the few injuries I hadnât sustained over the years, but I could tell from Bellaâs reaction that it was excruciatingly painful.  The smell of blood was beginning to affect me, I couldnât imagine how hard it would be forâŠ
For Jasper.
I looked over and he was still standing there, completely still.
If I had thought that he had looked feral the night that he attacked me, I was mistaken. He had still looked human then â sinister, terrifying and dangerous but still essentially human.
Now I was glimpsing the monster behind the man.
His eyes were, somehow, blacker than Emmettâs, and dull. His face was completely devoid of any kind of emotion, his gaze focused on Bella. I could picture his muscles tensing for the attack, and with a sick feeling, realized that Bella probably wouldnât be the only one hurt today. No one else had picked up on Jasperâs intentions yet, and I was incredibly aware that I couldnât stop him.
But I could certainly slow him down.
I darted across the field, my hair whipping across my face, and flung myself at Jasper, my arms wrapping around his waist. It didnât escape my notice that this was the closest we had gotten physically, and I was trying to stop him committing murder.
âPlease donât, please donât,â I chanted to myself. âJasper! Stop it!â I finally cried out as he began to move forward, dragging me with him, and Edward finally looked up at the sound of my voice.
Jasper shook me off fairly easily, without looking down, and I knew I had to go into full fight-mode; it didnât matter who or what Jasper was to me, I had to pull him back from killing Bella.
My leg shot out, and whilst Jasper stumbled for a second, but righted himself. I could hear Emmett and Rosalie yelling in the background, and when I looked around, Jasperâs fist came out of nowhere and caught me in the side of the head. For a second, I was seeing stars, and then I was back â Jasper had managed to get Emmett and Edward tangled in each other, Rosalie and Esme were hovering between where Carlisle stood with Bella.

Holiday Season
I'm weirdly enamored with the idea of Saguru baking. This is the second fic I've written with him baking... Felt like doing a holiday fic this year, so Merry Christmas if you celebrate it, happy Holiday Season if you don't, and may the new year bring better news than so much of this one.
Saguru surveyed the ingredients laid out on the counter, flour and sugar and eggs and a pound of butter all waiting to be made into something. Mumâs family recipe box with its dented corners and stiff hinges was open next to it. Ordinarily he would take what recipe he needed and shove it back into its cupboard, but there was an art to holiday baking, a process. Gran had always had a very specific order of baking her Christmastime goodies in order of what ingredients were used, whether there was a refrigeration period or not, and how long each batch needed in the oven. Mum tended to toss Granâs careful methodology out the window and start whatever took her fancy at the moment, but Saguru had always preferred a more scientificâor at least methodicalâapproach to baking. It made the process go smoother and quicker and optimized resources.
He gathered what he needed to prep the mince palmiers first, turned back toward the recipe with a package of puff pastry in one hand and a jar of mince in the other and found Kuroba Kaito sitting at the kitchen table like he had been there the whole time. Saguru very carefully did not drop his ingredients, but set them on the counter with an extra bit of carefulness as he processed this addition to his environment.
âWhat,â Saguru asked, âare you doing in London?â
âYouâre baking? I didnât know you baked,â Kuroba said, sounding exhausted.
âItâs the holidays,â Saguru said. âKuroba, why are you in my kitchen?â
âYou see it was a bit of an accident and now Iâm here and have time and hey, you live in London, so hi.â He gave a lazy salute, resting his chin on folded arms. He looked awfully content considering he was trespassing.
âYou accidentally ended up in another country.â
âThere were...â Kuroba waved a hand. âExtenuating circumstances involving keeping track of a weird kid and following up on a rumor and, well, here I am. You would not believe how expensive holiday plane tickets are.â
âI believe.â The real question was why Kuroba wasnât taking a plane back to Japan already. Knowing Kuroba, he wouldnât answer any questions directly though, and if Saguru even implied that it might have something to do with Kid, his insinuations would be deflected. It should probably alarm him more to have his classmate show up halfway around the world in Saguruâs kitchen, but it was just the sort of unexpected thing Kuroba would pull. Saguru gave a mental shrug and turned back to his baking. âWell, youâre just in time for holiday baking.â
âI canât believe you bake.â
âItâs tradition,â Saguru said primly. âGran started it, and Mum would be here for it, but her job has been a bit more hectic than usual lately. I thought Iâd get a head start so no one would complain come Christmas that Granâs ginger biscuits were missing.â
âWhatâs your mom do?â Kuroba asked. Saguru could feel his eyes following the motions as Saguru rolled out his puff pastry and opened the jar of mincemeat.
âSheâs a psychologist.â Kuroba hummed like this explained things. Saguru spread mince along the pastry dough. âThatâs how my parents met, actually. A criminal psychology talk at a Japanese university. Mum was studying abroad for a year in her undergrad and Otou-san was there as a secondary speaker on statistics of mental illness intersecting with violent crimes in Japan. That was long before he was a police commissioner of course.â Saguru rolled the dough, wrapped it, and put it in the freezer before grabbing a pot and the butter to start the florentines. âThey talked after and got into a big row over drinks about whether criminal behaviors were nature or nurture. It must have been a good debate because Mum finished out her degree in Japan and married him within the year.â
âHuh.â Kuroba blinked sleepily at him. Butter, cream, sugar, and honey in a pot, chop the fruit as it heated, stand by with the flour and almonds. âThen they had you?â
âEventually. After Mum got her doctorate and Otou-san got a promotion. They had rather different ideas about raising a child though. Theyâre divorced now, of course, but I was born and raised until elementary school in Japan.â Ordinarily Saguru didnât talk about himself. He focused on cases he solved instead of his personal life, and that was as it should be. But with Kuroba in his kitchen and infiltrating his Christmas tradition, it felt fitting to give Kuroba a bit of background to go with everything. Kuroba knew Saguru the detective, but he never really interacted with Saguru the person. ...Saguruâs fault. He tended to see Kuroba-as-Kid rather than Kuroba-as-person as well.
âWhyâd they divorce?â Kuroba asked. For all that he looked tired, he also looked interested.
âCultural and career differences.â Mum wanted more than society wanted for her, and in the end sheâd missed home. It had been an amicable split all things considered. âI visited Otou-san in the summer.â Ingredients combined, Saguru prepared several trays to pop in the oven. âHow did your parents meet?â
âOyaji met Kaa-san in Paris, saved her from a sticky situation, and swept her off her feet.â
âHmm. Sounds exciting.â And lacking in details. It probably involved Kid. Clean a bit before the next bit. New bowl for the ginger biscuit dough, pop out one batch of florentines to cool and put in the next tray, repeat until done and pull out the palmier to slice.
âYouâre actually good at this,â Kuroba commented as Saguru swapped florentines for sugar-spice dusted palmier rounds in the oven.
âBakingâs a science,â Saguru said with a nod to the kitchen scale. âApply the proper ratios and required heat, get the desired result. Simple chemistry.â He nicked one of the cooler florentines, enjoying its buttery flavor. âAnd it is its own reward.â
âI can get behind that.â Kuroba gave himself a shake and stood. âMind if I help?â
âEat the results or help bake?â Saguru asked rhetorically. He held out the recipe card for ginger biscuits. âStart measuring the dry ingredients. Iâm sure you can manage that.â
âIâve baked before, Hakuba, Iâm not going to ruin your cookies.â
Saguru pretended he didnât notice another florentine go missing. It was surprisingly easy to work with Kuroba in the kitchen. He was quick to figure out what Saguru would need next and didnât end up in Saguruâs way unlike the time Saguru tried baking with his aunt.
In no time the ginger dough was in refrigerator and Kuroba was measuring out flour for the shortbread dough. âIs it always so... streamlined?â Kuroba asked, waving his free hand at the neat stacks of finished baked goods and how Saguru had a bit of counter space set aside for each necessary step for each recipe.
âHardly. Mum has the tendency to grab whatever recipe she finds first and make each one in succession. It goes faster this way though.â
âHuh. I havenât baked since Aoko roped me into making a Christmas cake a few years ago,â Kuroba said. âThat was...an experience.â He was very precise in his weight measurements, which Saguru could appreciate. He could picture Kuroba measuring chemicals for his flash bombs or smoke grenades with an equally intent expression, getting each ratio on the dot. âBakingâs not something that happens much.â
Saguru took the flour from him, blending it with sugar and butter mixture. âIf it werenât for the holiday tradition, I doubt it would happen much for me either.â Mum made him a birthday cake every year, but store bought biscuits were simpler to get ahold of with their busy lives than to take the time to bake anything by hand. Traditions were different though. Those demanded observation, all the more so since his grandmother had passed on. A way to keep her memory alive so to speak. âWhat do you do for holidays?â
âFor Christmas?â Kuroba asked. âNot really something I celebrate unless Aoko wants to.â
âIn general then.â Saguru turned out the dough and held out a hand for the rolling pin. Kuroba passed it to him without him needing to ask.
âWe donât really have traditions.â There was something flat in Kurobaâs tone, just missing the nonchalance he was going for. âWe used to maybe, but those kind of stopped happening after my dad died.â
âOh.â Saguru finished rolling dough to a stilted silence. It had almost been companionable until heâd bungled that up. Saguru almost wished Kuroba would fall into their usual mode of bickering and needling each other instead of this silence, but Kuroba just stood to the side, face in a neutral-pleasant mask and eyes tired. Saguru needed to fix this somehow.
The bag of pastry cutters had the usual Christmas shapes of stars and trees and deer and men, but there were other shapes in there too, meant for other holidays, and...yes, they did still have it. Saguru dropped a pastry cutter into Kurobaâs hands.
âA... four-leaf clover?â Kuroba said, turning it over.
âI thought you might appreciate the pun,â Saguru said. And it was Kidâs mark as well, a sideways nod of acknowledgement that at least in one way there was a family tradition of sorts. âIt was meant for St. Patrickâs Day I believe, but it works well enough now on these too.â
âBecause clovers scream Christmas,â Kuroba snarked. He accepted the cutter though, making a few shapes in the dough. Saguru chose stars and trees for the shortbread. The ginger biscuits could be men and reindeer.
They shared bits of dough scraps as they baked, a surprisingly companionable silence. Kuroba was still, as tired as when he had arrived, but more peaceful and less harried. He rolled a bit of dough into a ball and ate it, staring at nothing and his mind somewhere far away. It was rare to see an introspective Kuroba, as rare as a quiet Kuroba. Kuroba was energy and madcap chaos. Bright colors and flashing cards drawing the eye, always filling a room with his presence and impossible to ignore.
âFollowing a lead, hmm?â Saguru asked.
âIf youâre trying to get me to confess to something...â Kuroba said, glancing at Saguru from the corner of his eye.
âAt the moment, no. Itâs poor timing though.â
Kuroba shrugged. âAs good a time as any. No classwork to worry about coming due until January. Bit more than a week away leaves plenty of time.â
âWas your lead successful?â
There was the slightest slump to Kurobaâs shoulders, body hunching in on itself as if Kuroba was too tired to completely control his response. Saguru got another shrug. âWhat do you think?â
Right. That would be a touchy subject then. He cast about for something that wouldnât ruin the somewhat comfortable atmosphere. âI went to see a magic show last week,â Saguru said.
âYeah?â Kuroba stopped squishing cookie dough between his fingers to listen, head tilted to one side. âI thought you detective types hated magic shows.â
âItâs a lot harder to get caught up in them when youâre well aware that thereâs a logical explanation for everything youâre seeing,â Saguru corrected. âThat doesnât mean we canât appreciate a show.â He ignored the subtle eye roll from Kuroba. âAt any rate, I was in the area for a case and had free time after it... I might have been feeling a bit nostalgic for Japan at the time.â Heâd only gone to Kurobaâs school for half a year before transferring back to London, but it surprised him sometimes how much he missed it. Sometimes he wondered if he should just finish out high school there, but he knew heâd miss London too. There wasnât a quick fix when your life took up time on different sides of the world. He checked the biscuits, found they needed a bit longer. âThe magician was nowhere near as good as you. Your classroom antics were on par with his best illusions.â
âOf course, Iâm one of the best magicians out there,â Kuroba said.
It wasnât empty bragging any more than Saguru calling himself a good detective was. Theyâd both put effort and time into building up their skills in their chosen professions. âIf youâre ever on stage one day, I would like to see what you perform.â
âIs that a challenge?â
âYou can take it as one,â Saguru said. âI canât exactly turn off my observations.â He took the biscuits from the oven and slid the parchment paper off onto wire racks to cool. When he turned back around, Kuroba had a grin on par to some of the ones Saguru had seen Kid sporting at heists. âWhat?â
âJust thinking about ways I could short circuit your brain into just enjoying the show instead of picking it apart.â
Saguru raised an eyebrow. âAnd I just said that trying to understand doesnât mean that I donât enjoy the show. Besides, what goes through your mind when you see a new trick? Surely youâre trying to figure out how they did it too.â
âUsually Iâm mostly âdang, that was really coolâ and I think about how they did it after the show is over.â Kuroba brought out the ginger biscuit dough and armed himself with the rolling pin.
âAfter, during,â Saguru said with a dismissive wave. âIt amounts to the same thing; trying to understand the mystery of how it worked.â
âKilljoy,â Kuroba said.
âRealist,â Saguru countered.
âYouâll have to come back to Japan sometime for that show.â
Saguru smiled. âYes, I suppose I will.â
The rest of the baking went quickly and progressed into decorating shortbread and ginger biscuits with Granâs icing recipe dyed in jewel-bright colors. Kuroba took an inordinate amount of pleasure in making the ones he decorated as bright as possible. He was artistic as was to be expected, and they came out pleasing to the eye. Saguruâs were less bright, but more uniform. âBoring,â if Kurobaâs opinion counted. Saguru looked at them and saw âtraditional.â
By the time Mum finally arrived home from work, he and Kuroba had decorated cookies spread across the whole kitchen table and were making a bit of a mess out of decorating the Christmas cake as Saguru found that using a pastry bag was a bit harder than he remembered last doing it at twelve with Granâs hands guiding his through the motionsâthe cake was usually Mumâs touch. Kuroba had taken over and the mess Saguru made was quickly becoming something a bit more elegant.
They both looked up when Mum walked into the room. âWow. Looks like someone was busy,â she said. âHow on earth did you manage to get all the holiday baking done in one afternoon?â
âItâs not that hard to do, Mum, Gran always managed.â
âYour grandmother could have forced time to bend for all I know. She was certainly stubborn enough.â Mum gave Saguru a quick hug before turning to Kuroba. âHullo, I donât believe weâve met.â
In a blink Kuroba was all charm, masks Saguru hadnât even realized were gone back in place. With a flick of his wrist, Kuroba offered Saguruâs mother a flower. âKuroba Kaitoâor Kaito Kuroba since this is England.â He spoke with slightly accented English; Kuroba must have been practicing his language skills lately since the last time Saguru heard him use English, it hadnât been anywhere near as smoothly. âA pleasure to meet you, maâam.â
Mum took the flower with a smile and both eyebrows disappearing into her bangs. âWell arenât you the charmer. Saguru, you didnât mention you were having a friend over.â
âKuroba ran into some trouble with his flight home to Japan,â Saguru said, âand since I happened to live in London, it made more sense to stay the night here than in a hotel. Heâll be taking the guest room.â There was a flash of surprise on Kurobaâs face. Surely he didnât think Saguru would toss him out? On Christmas Eve no less?
âA friend from Japan even,â Mum said, eyebrows creeping higher. âWell, whatever the circumstances, weâre glad to have you. Mind if I help finish up the cake? Canât have you boys doing everything.â
Kuroba surrendered the frosting. âGo right ahead.â
âLovely. Iâll finish this up and we can have a slice for breakfast in the morning.â
âIsnât that a little...sweet?â Kuroba asked. He watched how her hands worked, making practiced dollops of frosting to create a snowy landscape out of Saguruâs messy work and Kurobaâs more careful waves.
âI was thinking a bit more on the alcohol content,â Saguru said.
âThe point of holidays are to live a little,â Mum said pragmatically. âWhy not have dessert to start the day? Or we could have some of your biscuits. Very nice decorating by the way. Bright. I can tell Saguru didnât mix the colors this year.â She gave Kuroba a grin and a wink and started sculpting tiny snowmen.
âBoozy cake,â Kuroba said, eying the cake with new appreciation. âThatâs a tradition I could get behind. Sounds a lot more fun than strawberry cream cake or a cake roll.â
âItâs funny how two of the traditional desserts require taking as much candied fruit and nuts as you can stuff into a confection and dousing it in copious amounts of alcohol,â Saguru said drily. âFor the record, itâs peach brandy, and no, we donât make it strong enough to get drunk off a slice of it.â
âDang, a missed opportunity,â Kuroba deadpanned.
Mum laughed. âI like this one, Saguru, youâll have to invite him back.â
âOf course.â He...wouldnât mind Kuroba returning. This had been nice.
âDonât worry about the last of the dishes,â Mum said with a nod at the few Saguru hadnât cleaned up as he went. âI can do them. Go relax since you did all this work.â Said the woman who worked a ten hour day today, Saguru thought, but Mum did like frosting the cake and he knew the power of small, mindless tasks to unwind after a long day. âAnd Kuroba, youâre welcome here as long as you need to stay, ok?â
âThanks.â
Saguru meant to leave Kuroba at the guest room, let him get the rest he clearly needs, but instead found himself lingering awkwardly in the doorway after pointing out where Kuroba could find things he might need.
Kuroba looked back at him, not seeming to feel that same awkwardness or uncertainty of what, exactly, they wereâfriends? Rivals? Acquaintances? He looked like he was trying to will Saguruâs motives from him by power of his gaze alone, and wasnât that something of a role reversal.
Saguru cleared his throat. âYou...probably could use some rest. Iâll just beââ
âHakuba,â Kuroba said, cutting him off. âWhy did you go back to London?â
Saguru blinked, startled. âWhy?â
âYou went through the trouble of transferring schools and getting into the police and everything,â Kuroba said. âSeems like a lot of effort just to chase Kid for a few months.â
There were no emotions slipping past Kurobaâs masks now, whatever relaxed state of mind he had had was lost when Mum arrived. When Saguru was in Japan, his life had been taken up by Nakamoriâs loud, vicious enthusiasm as he chased Kid in the evenings and days spent in class observing Kuroba laughing, Kuroba flirting with Aoko, Kuroba avoiding Koizumi, Kuroba hiding the depth of his brilliance in flashy smiles and flashy tricks. Heâd seen Kuroba joyful, jealous, angry, and nervous. Heâd seen Kid triumphant and gloating and seen him pale with fear and regret. There was a phone call on a Paris morning and a lone glove hidden at the scene of a crime. Most people thought arrogance was Saguruâs biggest flaw as a detective, but Saguru knew it was too much empathy. He avoided most serial crime, worked murders because it was generally easier to have sympathy for the victim than the killer, and Kid had always been careful not to harm the officers that chased him, tried to keep property damage to a minimum, and almost always returned what he took. He might not know what Kid was trying to accomplish, but he knew it was something Kid felt deeply in enough to make a target of himself even if it sometimes terrified him. He knew Kuroba enough to say he was not a bad person.
Saguru looked away. âI never intended to stay in Japan,â he said, an honest answer if not a complete one. âAnd I had obligations here to fulfil.â
âLike baking holiday cookies.â
A tiny smile crossed his face without him meaning to. âYes, like holiday baking.â
âHmm,â Kuroba hummed like he didnât believe that was all but he wasnât going to push it. âWould you really invite me back?â
âYes,â Saguru said. There was no hesitation in that at least. âI donât mind you being here.â
âDonât mind,â Kuroba parroted, sarcastic and slow. âRinging endorsement that you want me here.â
Saguru rolled his eyes. âFine. I enjoyed baking with you and would enjoy doing something similar again should the occasion arise.â
The mask split into a smileâa real one so far as Saguru could tell. âCool. Thanks for the room. I am going to go pass out now.â
There was an awkward pause before Saguru realized he was still standing in the doorway. He stepped back. âGoodnight, Kuroba.â
âNight, Hakuba.â Kuroba waved and shut the door.
Saguru wandered back down to Mum.
âNot spending time with your friend?â she asked. She was working her way through dishes now, the cake fully frosted with little details added on with nonpareils and gel icing. Two smiling snowmen surrounded by flowers made of snow.
âI believe heâs tired.â
âHmm.â The soothing clink of dishes and the hiss of water from the faucet. Familiar background noises in a kitchen filled with Kurobaâs unfamiliarly-bright frosted biscuits. âAre the clovers a pun on his name?â Mum asked, a nod to the unconventional shape for the season.
âI thought it might amuse him.â
âHe seems nice enough, though I donât think he trusts me.â She kept washing dishes, not giving Saguru and facial cues to draw from. âHeâs very good at hiding what heâs feeling, isnât he? If I hadnât glanced around the corner before I entered the room, I wouldnât have noticed.â
âYes. He is good at that.â Saguru sat at the table. Mum rinsed the last dish, setting it on the drain board and wiped her hands dry.
âSo one of your Japanese classmates just happens to be in London.â
âA pleasant surprise.â
âI think you mentioned a Kuroba before.â
âI may have.â
Mum planted her hands on her hips. âSaguru...â
Saguru rubbed his forehead. âI didnât press for details. He showed up and I wasnât going to turn him away.â
âIt would be a bit rude at Christmas,â Mum said and he wasnât sure if it was straight sincerity or subtle sarcasm. She sighed. âWell, he is welcome, whatever his reasons. And heâs welcome at the family party tomorrow as well if he sticks around.â
âThank you.â
Mum patted his cheek affectionately. âNow, I canât believe you didnât leave any baking for me!â
Saguru huffed. âIf I didnât the baking, youâd still be baking by Christmas.â
âA bit of midnight baking never hurt anyone.â
âLast year you were at it at three in the morning.â
âSaguru, if you say I have poor time management skills again...â
Saguru gave her his best innocent look. It wouldnât have fooled him, let alone his mother. The hand on his cheek became a light swat to the back of his head and he ducked with it, laughing. They talked about their day until it was time for bed, snitching biscuits to munch on without guilt. Holidays were for indulging.
There was no light on in Kurobaâs room showing in the crack under the door when Saguru passed the guest room. He said a quiet goodnight in its direction all the same.
*
In the morning, Saguru couldnât say he was surprised to find the guest room empty. Everything was neatly folded back in place as if no one had ever been there, except for a used towel where Kuroba must have made use of the shower. Downstairs there were a handful of biscuits missing and a tiny, presumptuous sliver taken from the Christmas cake that had been filled in with icing to the point where it was almost unnoticeable. On the counter was a note on the nice stationary they had stashed in the guest roomâs desk and another one of Kurobaâs pretty paper roses.
Hakuba,
Thanks for letting me spend the night and crash your baking. Youâre not so bad after all. Sorry to up and leave without saying goodbye, but I had a plane to catch early in the morning. Funnily, Christmas Day tickets cost a lot less than Christmas Eve. Tell your mom thanks for me as well, and that that cake is goodâvery alcoholic and different, but good. I looked Christmas cakes up on my phone and wow, didnât know aged cakes were a thing. Anyway, if Iâm ever in London again letâs meet up. And if youâre in Japan and ever need somewhere to sleep that isnât your home, I have a guest room too.
Merry Christmas!
It was signed with a little clover doodle. It felt like he should be comparing handwriting with Kidâs heist notes. On the back was a post script, written in cramped Japanese that Saguru had to squint at to read.
Check in the electric kettle. This is still not a confession.
Saguru checked the kettle.
There was a gemstone there, a sapphire set in delicate golden filigree. It wasnât anything Saguru had heard reported stolen, and was willing to bet he would hear about in the next few days.
Really, now, Kuroba wasnât even trying to pretend at all. A tiny irrational part of him felt a bit warm at the thought that he had a bit of Kurobaâs trust. Saguru pocketed the gem and scribbled out the message in Japanese on the back. It might take Mum a bit longer to read, but she was still fluent in Japanese.
Not a bit too soon, it seemed because Mum slouched into the kitchen, in full disarray as she always was before her first cup of tea. âNo Kuroba?â she asked, blinking around the room sleepily.
Saguru held up the note. âIt seemed he had a plane to catch.â
âAh. Iâd have sent him off with something if I knew.â
Saguru would wait until she noticed the missing sliver of cake to pass along Kurobaâs message.
âHappy Christmas,â Mum said on her way to fill up the electric kettleâif Mum had been the one to wake up first.... It was just like Kuroba to have luck in his favor.
âHappy Christmas.â
Perhaps, Saguru thought giving the note in his hand one last glance, he would have to have another trip to Japan before his usual one in the summer. Just to visit.
It couldnât hurt to check in on what Kid was doing either.
Saguru smiled and tucked the note away.

Letâs see, where to start... I feel like Iâm becoming an adult in a true sense now. I have a payment plan set up for my credit cards, my student loans, my rent payment, and everything in between... Hopefully the anxiety stops soon.
A related note, I have an appointment with a counselor on Tuesday. Last time I went to one the guy didnât listen to what I had to say very well. Iâm putting that nicely. He talked about himself about 10x more than he ever listened to me or gave me advice. Iâm also going of my own accord this time instead of it being an ultimatim made by a significant other which is nice. I wonât feel forced to be there. I hope I can figure out some way to manage the reason my heart is pounding right now even as Iâm typing this. Iâve also been told by someone close to me that I seem to be depressed. I thought it was just situational, but they told me theyâve noticed it in me for as long as theyâve known me (which admittedly isnât very long but their opinion is highly relevant since theyâre around me practically all the time).
I want to get help, I want to get myself together. I want to show her I can be the man she deserves, but I also want to make changes for myself that make me happy.
I matter, and I forget that a lot. I used to hate myself, and sometimes I still do. I hate myself for the decisions I make, the words I say, the things I do or donât do, the way Iâm always forgetting something incredibly important until I get punished for it if itâs applicable, a lot of things make me hate myself. I thought I got better for a little while, and maybe I did. But now, these things are back in my head, causing that constant tension in my gut I havenât felt since I was with my ex.
She isnât necessarily the cause for all of my anxiety, but she sure as hell didnât help. She would constantly berate me with things she thought I should do, for her and for me (moving in with her was a huge mistake), she would constantly rip on me for not changing anything ever... The list goes on and on. And about that last part, me not changing? She was right, but she went about it all the wrong ways.
Iâm a creature of habit, and sure all humans are but thatâs just easy to say. Iâm an extremely habitual person, and going outside of that gives me anxiety.
It used to be terrible when I was in elementary school, back when I knew nothing about anxiety, depression, or any of those things. I went to a Christian school growing up (preschool to 11th grade, mostly the same 28 people through the entire thing which spawned some amazing life-long friends), and we had chapel every week, I think on Wednesdays. One week it would be in our classroom and the other class would come over to our classroom to sing and listen to a short sermon (during this I was fine). The alternating weeks, we would have to go to a different classroom, and as soon as I would remember this fact, I would immediately feel a tension in my gut so badly that I would often curl up in a ball on the floor thinking it would make it feel better.
I always assumed it had something to do with what I ate, but that didnât make any sense because I would eat varied things often (thank you, Mom, for packing varied lunches) so I kind of just let it go. In hindsight, it wasnât cool for my teachers not to mention this to my parents, but they (the teachers, but in fairness my parents too at the time) were fairly ignorant of struggles with mental illness so I kind of understand why they wouldnât mention it.
That reminds me of another thing I discovered about myself when I was going there: Iâm very easily distracted, but can focus on something relentlessly to the point where I sometimes unintentionally tune people out. 5th grade, private school (one room all day unless it was for chapel, we didnât have different classrooms for different classes until middle school which was in the same building with the exceptions of art and computer class), sitting in a desk, with a teacher who was diagnosed with ADD/ADHD years ago. I couldnât sit still, which meant usually during this age that I was tapping on something.
My fingers against the desk, my pencil against whatever I could reach, I was always moving. It started to get to my teacher, so he pulled my aside during recess and gave me a piece of poster putty. I asked him why, and he explained that instead of tapping I could play with the putty. I tried it, and it worked!
Until I became so focused on the putty and making up stories in my head about the putty men I would make that I would miss what he said in class and he would call me out for it. I guess this was his way of trying to make me manage what was going on, but me being the introspective person that I have always been, it would have been more effective had he approached me and explained this to me outright (instead of being afraid that telling me what he was doing would âbreak the spellâ or make me aware of what he was trying to do therefore stopping it from being effective).Â
This is the first point during which I had to re-read what I was saying to remember the point. The point is, Iâm an anxious person who can never sit still (my leg started moving back and forth as I was writing the previous wall of text which I will be breaking up before posting) and I want to do something about it. Itâs not my girlfriend saying sheâll break up with me if I donât get help, itâs not my parents getting so frustrated with me being lazy that they tell me to do it, itâs my decision and Iâm going to stick with it until I get better. No matter how long that takes.Â
Holy fuck that was scary typing that.
