1- were you named after anyone? i'm named after myself, really. tho ig the name crow and feeling like a crow came hand in hand. and my middle name is gonna be a variation of what my parents picked out for different-gab me back in the day.

2- when was the last time you cried? tuesday, maybe more recent, depends on your definition of crying

3- do you have kids? no, i rly wanna be a dad but idk if it'll be possible

4- do you use sarcasm a lot? i'm cynical and ironic but sarcasm specifically scratches the wrong itch. unless i'm mixing up the definitions again

5- what sports did you use to play before you became unable to? thanks for asking! so most recently i was doing karate (best sport ever btw its soooo goooood) and before that i climbed for a few years like preferrably top-rope & on real rock and before that idk a little bit of basketball and more relevantly street-soccer like the 3 vs 2 and the goal posts are jackets type. very important. i also used to jog idk. hard to imagine that now but runners high made it fun tbh. oh and i guess skating counts as a sport? both ice skating and inline skating. i grew up having a skateboard too but it was kinda meh. i used to have a bike too but that was always more a tool than a hobby to me.

6- what's the first thing you notice about people? wether or not i'm scared of them. like. feeling threatened. something something hypervigilance. i dont notice or remember appearances well. i guess age is pretty high up on the list. maybe i notice age first and that plays a factor in the subconscious threat evaluation. like, teenagers? oof. but if they're goth enough it might be okay actually. i guess i also notice wether or not someone looks specifically emo, punk and/or queer. to me.

are you named after anyone? No, I don’t think so. I think my dad just didn’t like my almost-name and liked the idea of me being “victorious”. Turns out the only way I’ve lived up to my name is by owning a bunch of dolls, wanting to be treated like a Queen and wanting to meet my Albert.

when was the last time you cried? um. In the shower about a week ago? I had to euthanize my 15 year old dog and I was suddenly struck by the grief of her loss since she’s been in my life for so long.

in   the   various   media   she   has   appeared   in   ,   from   danganronpa’s   anime   ,   games   ,   and   mangas   ,   ibuki’s  approach   to   music   has   always   been   a   staple   function   of   her   character.   as   is   established   in   game   ,   ibuki   was   once   a   part   of   her   school’s   light   music   club.   ❛   light   music   ❜   is   described   as   something   akin   to   western   pop   music. at   some   point   in   time   ,   ibuki   realizes   that   her   musical   interests   do   not   align   with   this   creative   direction  ,   resulting   in   her   breaking   away.

in   my   rules   ,   i   note   that   i   write   ibuki   under   the   specific   title   of   ultimate   musician.   i   choose   ❛   ultimate   musician   ❜   over   ❛   super   high   school   level   light   music   club   member   ❜   as   :   1.   i   think   it’s  quite   apparent   that   light   music   was   never   where   ibuki’s   heart   was.   2.   ibuki   mioda   is   a   musician   in   the   most   purest   form.   not   a   member   of   a   band   or   club   ,   but   an   artist   in   her   own   right.   that   is   not   to   say   the   members   of   her   previous   club   were   not   artists   ————   but   ,   her   talent   lies   in   her   virtuosic   ability   of   creating   music.   that   is   ,   without   the   constraints   of   a   genre   ,   instrument   ,   or  confinement   of   a   group.   (     though   forming   a   band   seems   to   be   a   very   important   dream   to   her   )      3.   ibuki   wrote   all   her   bands   music   and   it   was   so   good   that   it   instantly   became   a   hit   single   and   sold   millions   ————   komeada   explains   this   to   hajime   during   goodbye   despair’s   prologue.   this   coupled   with   the   other   aforementioned   points   lead   me   to   believe   that   hope’s    peak   scouted   her   under   the   title   of   ❛   super   high   school   level   musician   ❜   or  more   simply   put   ,   ❛   ultimate   musician.   ❜

her   music   style   debuts   in   chapter   three   of   goodbye   despair   when   she   hosts   a   concert   event   for   fuyuhiko’s   return.   to   everyone’s   surprise   ,   it   is   rather   unique.   based   off   the   song   ,   titled      ❛   from   me   to   you   ❜   it   seems   to   me   that   ibuki’s   musical   stylings   fall   inline   with   the   overarching   genre   that   is   ❛   downer   rock   ❜   aka.   heavy   metal   ————   i   know   ,   truly   groundbreaking   stuff.   which   i   get   is   supposed   to   be   shocking   ,   though   ,   i   think   that   it   is   an   interesting   choice   and   thing   to   explore.

known   to   render   is   listeners   unconscious   ,   and   possibly   even   scarring   a   one   innocent   kazuichi   souda   for   life   ,   it   suffices   to   say   that   ibuki’s   music   is   not   well   suited   for   the   light   -   hearted   ,   which   is   fair   tbh.

❛   from   me   to   you   ❜   is   a   song   that   features   a   wide   arrangement   of   vocals.   consisting   of   screaming   ,   death   growls   ,  clean   and   semi   -   distorted   vocals   ,   all   laid   over   each   other.   with   it’s   alternating   tempo   ,   melodic   vocals   ,   and   shredding   guitar   placements   ,   it’s   not   that   hard   to   find   elements   that   fall   in   line   with   the   attributes   seen   in   what   i   perceive   to   be   a   more   accurate   depiction   of   ibuki’s   main   genres   (     in   the   context   of   my   portrayal   )   ————   DOOM   METAL   ,   POST   METAL   ,   INDUSTRIAL   ROCK   ,   NOISE   ROCK   ,   PUNK   ROCK.   instruments   that   are   staples   in   ibuki’s   discography   would   be   :   drums   ,   organs   ,   bass   ,   piano   ,   electric   guitars   ,   synthesizers.

HEAVY   METAL   +   ITS   SUBGENRES   :   on   the   subject   of   doom   metal   ,   the   neo   world   program   reverts   the   members   of   class   77-b   to   be   pre   -   ultimate   despair   ,   but   even   then   ,   ibuki   was   still   working   on   her   craft.   hardly   ever   does   a   debut   song   sound   anything   like   later   projects.  with   this   in   mind   ,   ❛   from   me   to   you   ❜   is   an   iteration   to   what   would   become   the   more     ❝     refined     ❞     sound   of   ibuki’s   musical   catalog.

as   the   name   would   suggest   ,   doom   metal   was   birthed   from   the   heavy   metal   genre.   characterized   by   slower   tempos   ,   guitars   ,   hard   drums   ,   low   -   pitched   vocals   that   utilize   distortion   +   growls   ,   and   a   patented   darker   mood.   doom   metal’s   roots   are   often   traced   back   to   the   1970   self-titled   track   of   birmingham's   very   own   ——   BLACK   SABBATH.   (     yes   ,   that   is   ,   ❛   black   sabbath   ❜   by   black   sabbath   on   the   album   titled   .   .   .   black   sabbath     )     with   direct   calls   to   satanism   ,   the   occult   ,   mysticism   and   a   seemingly   impenetrable   darkness   ,   the   early   works   of   the   band   led   black   sabbath   to   often   be   touted   as   the   very   progenitors   of   all   things   metal   ;   and   by   extension   ,   doom   metal.   tony   iommi   specifically   is   said   to   be   the   father   of   heavy   metal   ,   with   ozzy   being   it’s   godfather.   applicable subgenres   :   gothic-doom   metal   ,   doom/death   metal   ,   thrash   metal   ,   drone   metal   ,   black   metal   ,   power   metal   ,   sludge   metal   ,   glam   metal ,   doomgaze.

i   don’t   think   people   passing   out   upon   hearing   ibuki’s   music   is   just   some   wacky   accident.   in   dangan   island   ,   ibuki   reveals   despair   is   something   she   is   well   acquainted   with.   doom   metal   is   known   for   its   atmospheric   qualities   ,   drawing   upon   the   very   hopelessness   that   is   associated   with   an   all-encompassing   sense   of   ,   well   ,   doom.    some   might   even   say .   .   .   despair.

ibuki’s   anti   -   establishment   beliefs   drew   her   to   punk   rock   and   by   extension   trash   metal   leading   her   to   experiment   with   faster   paced   songs   as   opposed   doom’s  longer   run   times.   themes   often   found   in   her   music   are   fantastical   and   i   feel   like   she   places   great   importance   on   upholding   appropriate   ambiance.   one   of   the   best   ways   i   can   think   of   referencing   this   is   in   danganronpa’s   anime   ,   where   during   her   performance  ibuki   has   a   guitar   that   literally   shoots   out   flames   and      ❝     plays     ❞     it   with   her   teeth   like   the   iconic   jimi   hendrix.   her   shows   are   just   as   much   of   an   integral   part   of   her   artistry   because   they   support   the   music   &   elevates   is   communication.   which   is   why   she   makes   such   a   spectacle   out   of   live   events   ,   drawing   inspiration   from   bands   like   alice   cooper   ,   kiss   ,   and   twisted   sister.  

this   blog’s   despair   verse   (   which   you   can   read   more   about    here   )   references   some   of   ibuki’s   concerts   but   i   didn’t   touch   on   what   sort   of   vibe   /   aesthetic   they   have.   ——   since   the   despair   era   still   preserves   a   certain   level   of   original   character   personas   ,   i’d   say   ibuki’s   live   shows   during   that   part   of   her   timeline    wouldn’t   differ   all   that   much   from   later   concerts   post   danganronpa   3.   it      draws   quite   heavily   from    the   horror   and   shock   factor  seen   from   alice   cooper.   from   fake   guillotine   executions   to   stabbing   fake   baby   dolls   ,   virtually   everything   was   fair   game.   another   way   of   rebelling   against   whatever   was  acceptable   and   rejecting   the   idea   of   a   death   by   society   ,   of   creativity   ,   originality   ,   and   the   self.   ibuki   even  refers   to   herself   in   the   third   person   in   the   same   way   vincent   furnier   ,   aka.   alice   cooper   ,   does.

      PART   I      :      focuses    on    a    collection    of    artists   and   songs   that   inspired   ibuki.   BLACK   SABBATH   is   of   course   on   here   ,   by   right.   METALLICA   :   with   the   faster   tempos   of   trash   metal   being   a    staple   of   the   band's   discography   ,   plus   just   being   one   of   the   biggest   names   in   rock   music   ,   it’s   hard   to   envision   what   would   shape   ibuki’s   sound   without   listing   this   band.   IRON   MAIDEN   ,   DIO   ,   DEEP   PURPLE   ,   EXTREME   ,   AND   MORE   APPEAR   ON   HERE.

Worldwise: Travel Entrepreneur Luis Vargas’ Favorite Things

As the CEO and founder of tour company Modern Adventure, Luis Vargas runs a travel business representing a significant shift in how we vacation. 

The 2-year-old operation has launched and led more than 40 small group trips to 30 countries and counting. These trips are tailored towards a specific area of interest led by leaders and tastemakers in that field. Think Bilbao and San Sebastian with the chef from Mugaritz, or Colombia with the team from a top California coffee roastery. 

Vargas, 44, has spent 20 years in the travel industry from startup to executive, always at the forefront of what’s next in global tourism. Penta caught up with him to chat about what’s making an impact in his life as Modern Adventure enters year three. 

My favorite neighborhood in the world is… I have to say Dunthorpe in Portland, Ore. I say this because one of the gifts of traveling to over 100 countries is knowing that wherever you go, there you are. This beautiful, peaceful neighborhood is where we’re raising our family and I’m grateful to live there. Of course, there are much “cooler” neighborhoods, like Juarez in Mexico City, that embody the creative energy and craft that are being developed and practiced across so many mediums around the world.

The one thing in my closet I can’t live without is… I love chore coats. With so many pockets, they’re perfect for everyday wear and a day on the move. Some of my favorite brands are LC King, Best Made, and Hedley & Bennett. The look can vary by color and fabric, and I’m always on the lookout for the right one.

If I were to buy a piece of art, it would be by… I love artists with a point of view, and I think Ashley Longshore is fantastic. Her current painting series of iconic women and men with vibrant colors and backgrounds are so much fun. I would choose something like the Lil Wayne or Ruth Bader Ginsburg piece and likely hang it at the Modern Adventure offices. Plus, I’d love to hang with her in NOLA [New Orleans], eat carbs, and party like it’s 1999.

The best book I’ve read in the last year is… Barbarian Days by William Finnegan. It’s a beautifully written memoir of travel, surfing, and maturing from a boy to a man. His voice and changed perspectives through travel resonates with me deeply. Be careful though, this book may make you want to quit your job and dedicate yourself to surfing full time.

A passion of mine that few people know about is… I’m a Certified Level Two Sommelier and have a deep love for the people and places that make and steward great wines. Connecting to a destination and its people through a glass of wine is one of my favorite experiences. Recently, my focus has been on Burgundy, which embodies the tireless dedication to craft and terroir over time. 

The one trip I’ve taken that I would love to do again… I spent three months in Nepal as part of a six-month honeymoon. The thought of doing a 90-day trek in the Himalayas is intoxicating and sounds almost mythical at this moment in my life. There is something so special about traveling under your power for that length of time and what it does to your mind, body, and soul. I left that experience strong in body and clear in mind. 

The next destination on my travel itinerary is… Modern Adventure is developing multiple programs in Japan, including our trip with Heath Ceramics, so I will be there in February doing R&D. I’m excited to experience Naoshima Art Island and meet with makers, artisans, and creatives that will help give a deeper understanding of a place that embodies craft, excellence, and tradition.

The thing that gets me up in the morning is… the idea of progress and evolution—a little bit forward every day. That, and my three children, all under eight years old. Sleeping in is currently extinct at Casa de Vargas.  

The bar in my hometown that I love to take a visitor to is… the Multnomah Whiskey Library. It’s a members club and an absolutely beautiful and thoughtfully curated bar with a world-class spirit list, cocktails, wonderful team and hospitality, and delicious snacks. I particularly love going in the winter, when the fireplace is roaring and the dark, moody, seductive interior is at its best. 

A person who inspired me to do what I do is… so many people have inspired, supported, and encouraged me throughout my journey. But the pillar of support and inspiration for doing what I do today, and yesterday, is my wife and partner, Joanne. Without her, it simply wouldn’t be possible.

1. Rochester Art Center

Operating since 1946, the Rochester Art Center has occupied its eye-catching riverside location since 2004, and while it is impressive enough to view from the outside, the true cultural insights are found within.

Featuring an ever-rotating display of various media and artworks from emerging and nationally recognized artists, the center makes it easy to engage with something new on each visit. It also offers many community programs, such as kid's dance parties, adult Creative Development Series, and summer youth camps, giving everyone in Rochester a chance to discover themselves through art.

2. Editor's ChoiceSoldiers Field Veterans Memorial

Constructed to honor all southeast Minnesotans who gave their life in battle, the Soldiers Field Veterans Memorial also stands as a tribute to all citizens who have stepped up to support their country. The memorial features visual illustrations of every military combat from the Revolutionary to the Gulf War. Its centerpiece is the Wall of Remembrance, a large granite monolith inscribed with the names of more than 3,000 patriots who lost their life in battle. You can visit the memorial any time, including at night, when the names and figures depicted glow under the lights.

3. Downtown Peace Plaza

If you are looking for a shopping and dining experience in Rochester, the Peace Plaza is a great place to start. Neighboring the Mayo Clinic, the Peace Plaza is a pedestrian friendly public space that lends quick access to everything the downtown area has to offer. With fashionable boutiques, first-class restaurants, and a great civic assembly space, the plaza emanates the welcoming atmosphere found throughout Rochester.

A sprawling network of skywalks and underground walkways stems from the Peace Plaza and spreads throughout the downtown area, providing a climate-controlled way to travel as you peruse the various shops and restaurants.

4. Plummer House

Originally home to Dr. Stanley Plummer and his wife Daisy, the Plummer House is another cultural attraction of Rochester that can be directly tied to the nearby Mayo Clinic. Serving as a founder and innovator for the Mayo Clinic, Dr. Plummer worked closely with the architects who began construction of his home in 1917. A full century later, this historic home and estate has been meticulously preserved and is open for the public to get a glimpse of the past. Visitors to the Plummer House are free to explore the manicured grounds and gardens during sunlight hours, and guided tours of the Tudor mansion take place on Wednesdays throughout June, July, and August.

5. Bike Trails

A fuel-efficient and friendly way to see the city, the many different bike trails found throughout Rochester provide endless avenues of enjoyment. Connecting users to natural spaces like Silver Lake and the Soldiers Field Veterans Memorial, and including a scenic downtown waterfront route that puts pedestrians in proximity to the Rochester Art Center and various shopping outlets, the bike trails in Rochester allow a choose-your-own-adventure kind of day. While most of the trails are separate from the roadways, a few use bike lanes and sidewalks to arrive at different destinations. Along the way, you can expect to pass by commuters heading to work, wildlife that shares the urban landscape, and many other members of the community who enjoy the pace of muscle-powered transportation.

6. Thursdays on First & 3rd

While any day of the week is a good time to check out Rochester's thriving shopping and dining scene, Thursdays during the summer are even more lively than usual. That's because throughout the months of June, July, and August, the city of Rochester hosts the Thursdays on First & 3rd Summer Market and Music Festival. Featuring more than 100 craft and food vendors plus a soundtrack of live music, Thursdays on First & 3rd can accurately be described as a weekly celebration of fine weather and a welcoming community. Every week is different thanks to the ever-changing lineup of live performances and special events.

7. Quarry Hill Nature Center

Within the 329 acres of the Quarry Hill Nature Center, you can expect to find eight miles of hiking trails, a children's pond, a limestone fossil quarry, and historic sandstone caves to explore. The Quarry Hill Nature Center doesn't just provide a backdrop to connect with these natural features, it also provides education about the environment. Within the actual brick and mortar nature center itself are informational exhibits and live animals, and the center also offers naturalist programs. It is open throughout the year, and during the winter months, the hiking trails easily convert to snowshoe and cross-country ski routes, making year-round exploration fun and easy.

8. Mayo Civic Center

Offering more than 200,000 square feet of space to enjoy, the Mayo Civic Center is one of the largest event centers in southern Minnesota. Hosting local and international musical acts, semi-pro and exhibition sporting events, as well as numerous conferences, business meetings, and conventions, the Mayo Civic Center has established itself as a vital part of the Rochester community. A 2017 expansion added a second-floor grand ballroom and an architecturally pleasing facade on Civic Street. While there is a long list of shows and performances to choose from, a simple way to enjoy this venue is just sitting on the riverfront terrace that overlooks the scenic Zumbro River.

9. Douglas State Trail

Operated by the Minnesota DNR, the Douglas State Trail is a 12.5-mile pathway that connects Rochester with the northern city of Pine Island and takes users through the small town of Douglas, for which the trail is named. It features both a paved trail and adjacent natural surface trail. With the exception of snowmobiles in winter, the Douglas State Trail prohibits motorized vehicles, allowing plenty of room for hikers, bikers, inline skaters, and horseback riders to explore the scenic environment. Serving once as the passageway for the Chicago Great Western Railway, the Douglas State Trail not only provides an accessible, even grade that everyone can explore, but it is a great example of how Rail to Trail conversions greatly benefit the community.

10. History Center of Olmsted County, Mayowood Mansion

Serving as a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the people, places, and stories that have made Olmsted County what it is today, the History Center of Olmsted County provides opportunities for locals and tourists to learn about the community's progress over the years. Featuring rotating exhibits and a handful of preserved historic buildings, the center also hosts youth camps, lecture series, and family-friendly movies under the stars throughout the summer. No history lesson on Rochester and the surrounding Olmsted County would be complete, however, without mentioning the Mayo Clinic, which was founded in Rochester and has developed a reputation.

In conjunction with the Mayo Clinic, the History Center of Olmsted County helps provide access to the historic Mayowood Mansion, the former residence of the Mayo Clinic co-founder, Charles H. Mayo. This compact city has a high number of business travellers meaning that flights and hotel rates are frequently cheaper at weekends – we found return flights with Ryanair departing from London Stansted on a Friday in March, returning Sunday, for £62 return. Food and drink prices across Poland are also low, helping spending money go further. 

Vilnius, Lithuania

For example, Teletext Holidays is offering seven nights at the three-star Dubai Palm Hotel from £469pp, room only, including return flights with Emirates departing 24 January 2019. And to cut out all food and drink costs while there, plenty of hotels offer good deals on an all-inclusive stay. Travel agent Holiday Genie is offering seven nights’ all-inclusive at the four-star Emirates Grand Hotel for £773pp, including return Virgin Atlantic flights from Heathrow, departing 4 February 2019.

Although airfares from the UK can be pricey, Norwegian operates low-cost flights from London Gatwick to Buenos Aires, upping the frequency to daily services from summer 2019, from £250 one way.

As part of a wider initiative to attract more visitors to the country, tourists paying for their accommodation using an international credit card can also benefit from a 21 per cent refund on tax. This applies to all accommodation, from homestays to luxury boutiques.

Turkey

In the last 12 months, the Turkish lira has slumped in value against the pound. While there are bargains to be found in Istanbul, we recommend heading for the otherworldly landscape of Cappadocia. Balloon flights are the bucket-list thing to do in this magical region, but to save cash, hike the honeycomb rock formations instead. Cappadocianguide.com offers a range of guided packages at excellent rates, including full-day (£45), half-day (£22.50) and sunset treks (£10), in addition to private and general tours.

Albania is home to some of the best beaches in Europe, but without the typical Mediterranean price tag. Travelling to the Albanian Riviera from the country’s only international airport isn’t quick, but an alternative route is the fast ferry from Corfu, Greece, which will get you to Sarandë’s golden beaches in 35 minutes. Upon arrival, you’ll find some of the cheapest room rates, food and drink in Europe: a three-course meal in a decent restaurant should cost no more than £14, while a pint of beer comes in at £1. We found return flights with British Airways from London Heathrow to Tirana in June 2019 from just £139pp.  

Tunisia

Tourists looking to make a dent in the bestsellers’ list and work on their tan can get some superb deals on packages in Tunisia next year. We found a seven-night, all-inclusive Thomas Cook deal departing in March, including flights, at the four-star Medina Belisaire & Thalasso Resort in Hammamet on the Tunisian coast, from £275pp. Those seeking to immerse themselves in this ancient country’s Roman heritage can explore its extensive ruins and find guided bespoke tours available from £40 per day. 

Cambodia

Similar to neighbouring countries Vietnam and Thailand, you can get food, drink and accommodation for low prices in Cambodia. Angkor Wat in Siem Reap might be one of the country’s main attractions, but it also costs £29 to enter the complex. Instead, head to Banteay Chhmar towards the Thai border. It’s a 12th century temple complex that’s as equally awe-inspiring as Angkor, but without the crowds or price-tag: it costs just £3.95 for entry.

Hospitable locals, snow-capped mountains and a love of food and drink make Georgia an excellent destination for adventurous travellers. Brits who want to explore this beautiful part of the world will find prices on a par with many Southeast Asian countries – an imported beer will set you back £1.18, while a three-course meal is yours for just £7.41. Direct flights with Georgian Airways make it easier to get there.

Ecuador

Another long-haul destination requiring an initial cash injection to travel there, but where you can save on arrival, is Ecuador. Prices in this South American country are incredibly low: expect to pay around £2.35 for a meal and £10 for a night’s budget accommodation. We found return flights from London to Guayaquil, on the Ecuadorian coast, in April from £530, travelling with Austrian Airlines and Copa.

Dispelling the Myths About Living In Retirement Villages

Myth 1:

Retirement Villages Are Depressing

According to Michael Wells, Director Tranquil Waters in Redlands, “This is indeed very high on the list of worries that people have about moving into a retirement village. However, this is also the easiest apprehension to get reassurance about. All you have to do is visit a retirement village near you.

Many have open days or otherwise just make an appointment to be shown around.” “Retirement villages today provide the added reassurance of comfort,style, safety and security in a vibrant and caring community. Talk to the people living there, ask about their day.

You will see that there is a lot going on, from social activities, health and well being classes, swimming, bowling, outings, art and craft, just sitting and relaxing over a drink with friends and the list goes on. The depressing communities of the past are long gone and today’s retirement villages are active and much happier communities.” However, it would be fanciful to think that nobody in a retirement village gets depressed or is affected by social isolation.

Michael agrees and points out that, “Staff are usually trained in recognizing signs of depression and loneliness and its part of their job to help in these cases, without overstepping the mark. Sometimes the solution can simply be a sociable chat or arranging a ‘buddy’. If the problem is more deep seated, the retirement village usually gets the family or the resident’s GP or care provider involved to take the appropriate steps from there.”

Myth 2:

I’ll Lose My Independence

Many people believe that they will lose their freedom by moving into a retirement village. They believe that life will be regimented and that they will be expected to fall inline. If there was a real basis for this fear, we would all fight tooth and nail, and resist the idea of moving into a Retirement Village.

According to Michael Eggington, Managing Director, Lendlease Retirement Living, “Our retirement villages offer independent living options where people can maintain independence, control and privacy as well as being able to take advantage of onsite services and facilities such as restaurants, cafes, instructional classes, and social outings.” Dispelling the Myths continued.”

“In reality, retirement villages are able to provide a person with more independence than living in a larger home as services are easier to access and chores such as gardening and maintenance are removed. The time that is given back can allow people to realise a new found independence for things they may have always wanted to do but did not have the time.” “There are many stories of people in retirement villages taking up voluntary work they never had time for before, getting back into the workforce on a part time basis or even writing a book, because they are free from the bulk of household chores and maintenance that usually accompanies home ownership.

Whilst most people in their family homes would spend at least two or three hours a day on chores and maybe only an hour a day on things such as exercise or leisure activities – in a Retirement Village the time can be reversed, resulting in an exciting and refreshing new lifestyle.” In spite of all that is going on in the Village, however, nothing is forced upon you either, so you don’t have to feel obliged to participate in activities if you don’t want to. The reality is that you have the freedom to live life the way you want to.

Myth 3:

I’ll get cut-off from my family and friends.

In essence, it would seem that moving into a retirement village is just like moving from one suburb to another or from a street-facing house to a gated community. According to Richard Andrews, Territory Operations Manager, Qld, Aveo Group, “It’s just like a change of address, usually for the better. You will still continue to participate in your life outside of the retirement village.

In fact, we encourage you to retain and strengthen your bonds with family and friends. Have them come over, go out together and do all the things you have always enjoyed be it eating out, shopping, going to the cinema or just walking along the beach.” Many residents in Retirement Villages also go out to work and others run their own businesses with all the normal networks that entails.

Other residents find that living in a retirement village actually gives them more time to engage in activities outside of the village which just wasn’t possible before because of the lack of transport or indeed time. As many villages provide transport and regular excursions, going to the mall or the theater can be visited in good company with new friends from the village. It is not so much that you are losing friends; rather you are gaining new friends as well.

Myth 4:

There are too many restrictions –having guests, having a party and even cooking.

For sure this was true of many places in the past, but today it is definitely not the case. Brett Mullen who is the Managing Director of Yukana, shared that “In regards to cooking, most if not all villages nowadays will have a full kitchen (or kitchenette,) so this is really is not an issue for a resident to independently look after their own requirements.

The only issue is whether you really want to cook in your accommodation, have your meal delivered to your unit or if you prefer to take a short walk to the village restaurant for your favorite dish, with some friends” “I recently was talking with a resident from one of our units, who was dining in our private dining room, and asked why she was doing this (as I thought that she was more than able to do this for herself). Her answer was so sweet, “I have been cooking for over 60 years, I am done with that”.

“The same liberal attitude in today’s retirement villages applies to visitors, overnight guests and parties. They are encouraged as they help to retain your links with the outside world and allow you to have a great social network.

The management of most villages will usually encourage all sorts of events to keep you involved, such as a family dinner night, BBQ’s, grandparent’s days, etc….” “Incidentally, if you have a meal provided by the village to your accommodation or usually eats in the village restaurant / cafeteria, most villages will have plans for guests as well.”

“That said, there will always be some sensible guidelines about late night parties so you don’t disturb others, but that is just like living in your current house or unit in a residential area, or having a body corporate which would also have some rules on not disturbing your neighbors. So I say enjoy your party!”

When you are going to move home, it is natural to worry. Some of those worries come to us because we remember the rather sombre environments of many years ago. Independent living in a retirement village today is nothing like it used to be. It is happier, freer and healthier.

Positives

+ The teamwork was good in the BMC; we came up with ideas for the BMC together.

+ members (Tobias) solved mistakes that had been overlooked.

Negatives

-  Other group members underestimated the work involved in the BMC and finance.

- Communication throughout the whole group should have been better. Elements within the BMC were different to those in the brandbook.

- There should have been more teamwork when creating the financial parts. This resulted in mistakes that had been overlooked

Future forward:

- Next time there needs to be better communication throughout the whole group, as to avoid big differences in information within the products.

Design

Positives:

+ Everybody was really focused on sustainability

+ People from other departments joined in when a lot of designers were sick

+ Had a lot of good and different ideas

Negatives

- Unequal workload

- Too many people, without a clue about how design works

- Different ideas about how much time and energy you are willing to put down in the project

- Proactivity level came in waves.

- Communication issue during the whole weeks, a lot of messages got lost in cyberspace

Future forward:

- Next time we should make tryouts with the materials and constructions and have a better plan for how to create the garments with the waxed fabrics

- Have a stricter time plan and make sure to deliver on the deadlines

Brand Book and Scenario

Positives:

+ Communication in the group of brand book was good. Everybody knew what to do and when to deliver, always on time. We made easy decision with each other about pictures and layout etc.

+ We all had a clear vision on how we wanted to translate the concept in the brand book.

+ We delivered the brand book in a professional neat way and arranged a sponsor for it.

Negatives:

- We didn’t show the brand book that often to others, they trusted us but it’s better to keep communicated with them.

- Making a realistic deadline to print the brand book, cause we didn’t make our deadline.

- Not losing the focus of brandbook and help others with their subject.

Future forward:

The communication to the design team was really hard because they took the visuals for the concept too literally while we meant with it was the mood.  

-  communication with the design team has to be clear at the beginning. So that they understand our way of the concept and keep communicate with them all the way.

The group for brand book at the start was too big, so the beginning was a little bit chaotic. Cause we had also managers and we had to explain what brand book included.

* Next time make a clear plan for the brand book and write all the steps down so managers can see how it works. And divide the subjects so the group gets smaller and have a clear view.

Installation

Positives:

+ Experimented well, went through 3 semi-worked out installation options.

+ Problem solving attitude - although there was some miscommunication regarding the key-aspects of the design of the installation, we together found a way in which we could fix the problems that arose.

+ After the feedback session on the box installation, we developed an idea of making a sustainable installation by using less and pre-used materials.

Negatives:

- The installation was an underrated aspect in our group which resulted in a couple of ideas which did not leave the idea stage for quite some time, which then resulted last minute construction of the final installation

- Due to the above mentioned, there were significantly less people dedicated to the installation compared to all the other jobs

- Although we started with the intention to deliver something with a lot of interaction, we have failed to deliver an interactive installation.

Future forward:

Make a building plan, detachment plan and know what tool is needed for it.

Photoshoot & Fashion film

Positives:

+ Preparations for the shooting as well as for the video was taking seriously and was managed well

+ Organisation was well managed as well as everything worked out in the way we planned it

+ Collaboration our group was excited about these 2 visual outcomes so we separated the work that was needed in prosperous way and it worked out well

+ Team spirit was there during the whole process keeping us excited for the final product

+ Responsibility, every task was managed accordingly with high standard level

+ Communication was clear and fast

+ We were all very happy about the result and the final product

Negatives:

- The designs had to be retouched a lot of times during the shooting since they were not ready yet

- The male model cancelled one day before; but we managed to organise a new one

Future forward:

- plan it better in order to work faster

- communicate more with the other departments so they know what is going on.

Sustainability

Positives:

On the collection the puzzle piece seams worked, all the fabrics were waste fabrics from tommy and CK and left overs in amfi. the stand: the frames are donated to a second hand story Kringloop. The wood was donated to a company. The images were kept by the group. Other materials were to taken Stijns dads art and crafts class. Carpet taken back by the one who donated it.

Negatives:

The outfits cannot be washed, and the wax is stuck to the fabrics so it is hard to recycle. clearer planning with the post-show-life needs to be explored. On the day on deconstructing the stand, some individuals without thinking broke the stand and placed it in the trash. The rest were quick to take it out of the trash and take each nail out, and donate the wood to Standbouw.

Show

Positives:

+ All there on time.

+ In stillation up and ready, pitch went well. the make-up and hair was very very nice and pulled all the outfits together.

+ The models were enthusiastic and worked well. Smooth show overall

Negatives:

- Could plan the day before hand rather than all talking on the day.

- Last minute adjustments on both the stand and outfits could have been avoided. more pro-activity

General group process

From group members:

“In my eyes, the group was very diverse. People had different levels of motivation but we managet well overall. It turned out okay but I think it could be better if we had made clear rules and tasks.”

“This project was in parts a bit frustrating for me, because I got the flue and couldn’t give 100%. It was nice to experience how all the departments worked together. I think it went well for the amount of time we had.”

“As a group, I think we can say that we are proud of what we have achieved within a short period of time. There were quite a few bumps along the way, yet that is expected when working in a group of 25 people. For next time, however, communication should be better. I noticed during the show that information in products (such as BMC and brandbook) were completely different. We were lucky that this was not noticed by the assessors, however it was something that should have been avoided.”

“We could have had a more organized start of the project if we dived tasks on the first day so everybody knew what they needed to do for the whole project”

Group evaluation

To manage a group of 24 people under stress is not an easy task. Especially when you take into account that almost none of us knew each other from before Triptych The fact that everyone has different ways of working and solving tasks makes it even more complicated. During the first day of Triptych, made the agreement that the manager for the upcoming weeks was going to be the brander Stijn Oom.

We started off the second day of the project fairly easy, with individual research of our icons and brainstorming of ideas for the concept. From the start, it became important to make decisions altogether, like a democracy. Looking back at the process, this was not the best thing to do, it was very time-consuming and it’s impossible for everyone to agree on something, but we wanted our brand to be as coherent as possible, making sure that everyone understood the concept.

We divided the whole group into smaller groups on day 3, but it was hard for a lot of people to start working on the seperate tasks since the concept was not completely set. People left early without giving any notice, which left other people who were still working annoyed. It got pretty clear that there were different levels of ambition within the group. This resulted in an unequal workload, because at the end things had to be finished.  Although the first week was not very stressful and it felt like we were on the right track to create something very cool.

During the second week, we struggled a lot. Based on the feedback we got in the presentation we had to change some things within the concept and therefore had to adjust things in every department. A lot of people got the flu and had to stay home and that, in combination with the fact that the show was coming closer and closer, resulted in a lot of stress for the manager as well as the group members. Design was the department that struggled the most, mainly because the outcome of our materials didn’t turn our as expected and during the last two days before the shooting we had to redo the showstopper completely. Despite sickness and exhaust, we kept up the positive energy and managed to finish it in time.

The biggest struggles for us this project have been sickness, inefficient group members and lack of respect for the project and the manager. It felt like a lot of the group members took the tasks for granted and kind of thought they were solving themselves. It is hard to not have the time to get lost in the process and finding new ways.

BUT, even if we experienced some struggles on the way, it is an experience to work this intense with a big group. We all have learned something from these two weeks and it is very interesting to see how the different departments work together and to see how people are solving tasks they have never done before.  We have spent a lot of hours together and got to know each other quite well by now. Even though there have been conflicts and irritations along the way, we have mostly been honest towards each other and we have been laughing a lot.

Finally, it's also great to see how much you can create in such a short time!
