Couldn't find the fic I wanted to read, so I wrote it myself and then realized it hit so close to home I couldn't immediately share it. That being said I'm very proud of it, and I hope it finds the people who need a story like this but have never found it

Aromantic Keith who never told anyone that—at least, not before Lance said "I really like you."

For the record, no one told Keith that Lance was in love with him until Lance said those short words and sent him into a tailspin of sorts. This is not his fault.

On the one hand, Keith would’ve been absolutely fine without their relationship changing dynamics. On the other hand, he wouldn’t have ever known it could unless Lance had confessed, and now that he knows, he wants something other than just friendship.

The third thing is that Keith needs to fix this.

Hm… thinking about Lance being closeted about being aro because amanormativity was always so present in his life it feels dangerous to admit he might not want that. But then they do something like make cupcakes and Pidge asks Hunk to add some fondant in the aroace and lesbian flags colors on their cake, and Keith asks for mlm and agender and aromantic and Lance just… He can’t believe how easily they’ve asked for this (but they’re in space and they only have each other so it feels easier to come out). He asks for the bi flag, and then, when everyone’s turned around, he adds the aro flag with shaky hands, almost scrapping it off entirely before he catches Keith’s eyes. Keith just looks at where his hands are gripping the spoon, and then he looks back at his face and just smiles, and it changes everything. Because no one says anything but Pidge high five’s him and Hunk looks at him gently like he knew, and the altean ask about the flags but don’t comment on Lance being aromantic.

There’s still awkward congratulations and thanks from Shiro and his heart beating in his ears when they talk about dating (because Lance is Lance and so everyone has always expected him to date). But there’s also a new, strange understanding between Keith and him, and the looks Keith gives him when an alien flirts with it are just hilarious.

Collar Kisses #6 (?)

Something happens where the only way to get Lance to wake up/heal Lance is for someone who romantically loves him to preform whatever ceremony or something. He got sprayed by some sort of flower like the dummy (affectionate) he is.

All the paladins are in a panic, and Keith is internally debating it himself, but deep down he knows the answer and is just delaying the inevitable. So while they’re all panicking, Keith takes whatever he has to take to do the ritual thing (a kiss?), and all the paladins just stare at him as it works.

What they don’t know is that the only way for the spell or whatever to wear off is for the person being kissed/whatever to return the feelings.

So now all the paladins know about Keith’s pining (except Lance, because if Lance knew then Keith wouldn’t be pining) and it’s a bit awkward at first, but it’s all fine. The thing is, everyone thinks Lance doesn’t reciprocate Keith’s feelings, when in reality, he’s just really good at hiding his crush unless people know, then it’s obvious (one of my favorite tropes.)

One day, they go back to that planet and the aliens accidentally reveal the real reason Lance was saved, because they assumed they had gotten together by now, and Lance goes “but who…” until his eyes land on Keith, hopeful.

But Keith doesn’t know it’s hopeful, so he panics when he thinks Lance had figured it out. So, he runs, and that’s basically all the confirmation Lance needs before he tries to run after him and scream Keith’s name.

He’s stopped by Shiro, who says to give Keith time, and Hunk and Pidge stand there too, Hunk looking a bit guilty and Pidge being like a steel wall.

Lance is so confused, until Pidge says something like, “give him time, he doesn’t need a rejection right now.”

Lance literally stares at all of them and goes “what?!” He breaks out of Shiro’s grip and starts sprinting, and when the team calls out he goes “how could I not love him?!”

More Keith POV now, he’s running through the forest of an alien planet, part of the area that’s not charted so his map is useless, until he falls. After he tripped, he hears the sound of footsteps, and tries to get back up, but Lance come through the forest faster than Keith could run, and basically tackles him.

There’s a dramatic love confession with a lot of screaming and tears, and they both just stop to stare at each other for a bit, the only sound surrounding them the quiet calls of an animal native to the planet.

And then Lance let’s out a disbelieving laugh, and pulls Keith in by his armor collar to kiss him. It’s a bit messy, desperate, but it’s also languid and loving. Most of all, /it’s them/, and they wouldn’t give it up for the world.

headcanons for aro keith?

he doesn’t really Get romantic attraction

“What does it even mean????” “Well… you know.” “No, Lance, I don’t!!!!!”

Cue everyone pitching in helpfully what they think romantic means and Keith just not being able to fathom any of it.

Before that discussion he never really had the vocabulary to understand aromanticism so he just assumed it was another aspect of his difficulty relating to people (he still does, sort of)

He’d sort of resigned himself to a future alone but in his heart of hearts he’s always wanted to find a few friends to spend his life with

Basically he’s had a giant family shaped hole in his heart for as long as he can remember

Shiro was the first person to help fill that hole and Keith will love him forever for it, but at the same time, he still craves that kind of connection with people his own age

He doesn’t really know about queerplatonic relationships, nor would he be looking for one at this point in his life if he did

He’s still just figuring out how to navigate friendships without pushing people away, he doesn’t trust that he’d be able to handle a relationship level of commitment to one person and not quiznak it up.

An alien flirts with him once on a mission and his reaction is the most skittish and confused any of the paladins have ever seen from him

He literally blurts out “what do you want from me???” and spends the next minute facepalming in shame behind Hunk while Allura apologizes profusely for him.

They found a bunch of old Altean movies in the castle and whenever they watch romcoms Keith is just sitting there in disbelief at the irrational things people do for love

(“You’ve done plenty of irrational things for different reasons,” they remind him.)

(“That’s besides the point!!!”)

The only love he’s ever really wanted out of life is that of friends and family

He finally has a group of people he feels comfortable calling his friends, but he wouldn’t originally have called them family the same way he does Shiro

He realizes it in the little things:

how he loves to hear Pidge laugh

how he always feels safer on missions with Allura by his side

how whenever he’s having issues he can go talk to Coran

how Hunk makes a habit of bringing snacks and water to the training room because Keith is terrible at maintaining a proper food-exercise balance and nearly passed out that one time

or how he and Lance want to kill each other most of the time but they’d probably die for each other too, and really, isn’t that what being siblings is all about?

and he’s still a little insecure in these feelings and sometimes he still feels separate from the group, but he’s sort of started to realize that he has a chance here to have the kind of love he’s always needed in his life – and maybe, if he’s lucky, he’ll actually get to keep it.��

in conclusion, aro keith is fantastic and exactly my kind of jam and i’m so happy this is the first thing i was asked to make headcanons for

Imagine if Keith was Triple A (I call it that because it's funny if it offends someone I'll stop <3) and Lotor is doing the Classic Villian Monologue ™ and Keith just raises their hand and goes 'I'm not a man or woman.' And Lotor watches them and asks them the weird questions people usually ask agender people and Keith replies with the way they views themself ('what are you?' 'A Paladin.' 'What's in your pants?' 'Knives.' 'What's between your legs?' 'Your head if you don't shut up.') and when other paladins or anyone tries to flirt with them they're just kinda blank and shifts away when someone tries to kiss them. I have more but am currently blanked due to sickness and death so I'll probably add more idk
