I'm not in the fandom, so seeing Daniel IWTV continually throws me for a loop because I mostly know Eric Bogosian as the writer and audiobook narrator of the wild and gripping historical account, Operation Nemesis: The Assassination Plot that Avenged the Armenian Genocide.
So my brain often assumes it's an interview about the book and tries to parse the text/dialogue through that lens and can I just say. IT'S WEIRD. IT'S ALWAYS WEIRD.

I hate how the media paints Azerbaijan as this amazing country when it's not, like, do they not remember Anush Apetyan? I still cry for her, and my heart breaks so much for her family, especially for her children.
Tumblr media
We live in an age where justice is for sale, and morality can be bought with commodities like oil — something azerbaijan has plenty of. For us Armenians, this means that no matter how heinous the crimes, no matter how horrific the massacres, the world will always turn a blind eye. The scales of justice are tipped, not by truth or humanity, but by those who can afford to pay the price.
Anush Apetyan....her name should be engraved on the forehead of the collective human conscience.
For all those who don't know her story, Anush Apetyan was a mother of three children and an Armenian soldier who suffered unimaginable torture, mutilation, sexual violence, and death at the hands of azerbaijani military forces in September 2022 during a period of ceasefire near Jermuk, in the southern Armenian province of Vayots Dzor. Her torturers mutilated her body, put two severed fingers in her mouth and gouged out her eyes, which they replaced with stones. Anush's arms and legs were also cut off. On her chest, her killers wrote hate messages against the Armenian people. It was while the azerbaijani soldiers surrounding her were celebrating and mocking her. They filmed the act of violence in detail and distributed the video via telegram. This act of torturing Armenians, filming it, and then proudly posting it online for the world to see is disturbingly popular among the azeri military. After all, what do they have to fear? No one cares. No one will punish them. After all, who remembers the Armenians?

So apparently the actual authentic tradition of the Church, as recorded in Aquinas, is that being raped during a persecution not only does not rule out a person (such as St. Lucy, who was confined in a brothel and suffered violations there) being a virgin martyr, but actually confirms them as one since the rape is one of the torments they endure rather than recant Christianity. (This of course applies to other rapes too, but “vowed virginity and refused a suitor, was denounced as a Christian” is a whole category of early martyr so that’s the context theologians traditionally discuss it in.)
As Augustine also says, virginity is only a virtue in the soul, not in the body: good things in the body are just health and wellbeing, not virtues. His particular image is useful, namely, “If a midwife, ascertaining a girl’s hymen [as was sometimes done with Roman maidens before their marriages], damages it through malice or clumsiness, is anyone really such a fool as to say the poor girl is no longer a virgin in any way that matters? Or if a nun decides to betray her oath to God and lie with a lover, does anyone really think that, once she has decided to break her vow, she is really still a holy virgin till the actual moment of copulation?”
This needs to be preached much more consistently: the virginity of the holy martyrs is preserved not by miracles preventing them being violated, as in many traditional, mythologized accounts (influenced by pagan Roman assumptions about “purity”), but in the fact that the violation does not matter to their virginity (nor to the faithfulness of married people who are raped). Yes even if it’s coercion or threats, “forced consent”, rather than being physically overpowered—Lucretia, the very type of the innocent rape victim to Roman culture, was threatened by Sextus Tarquinius, not physically subdued.

31 ÷ 2 + 7 is 23 btw
reading a romance novel where the protagonist feels the need to stop and inform that audience that it's okay for her, a 27 year old, to hook up with a 31 year old because despite the age difference both of their brains are fully developed. the Discourse really has done incalculable damage.

Anyway, a few nights ago I went to college right after a happy hour at my work and my drunk-ish ass just apparently decided that the perfect casual after-class conversation topic with my friend and crush was telling him everything I knew about the history of the Armenian Genocide.

-TW for violent language: I don't normally post things like this here- but don't feel necessarily safe posting about it on Twitter! Many people truly have no idea how horrible it can be oftentimes posting as an Armenian artist online. For me it has started getting worse recently. I thought it would be ironic to show someone acting like the hate on Armenians side is stronger, along with two random comments I got recently on COMPLETELY none political art pieces/photos I posted. Also REALLY bold of this person to claim the hate on my side is stronger when the hate on their side resulted in my ancestors being Genocided but- that's neither here nor there. This post is simply to raise awareness. There are so so many horrible things I could talk about to raise awareness about, and the sad truth is I simply don't write about it in the attempts to keep my family members who live abroad safe from harm, because that's how bad it can be, you never know.-

I love your AUs <3 I had not heard of the Venetocracy one before but it sounds super intriguing as well! Do you have any recommendations for books/shows/movies that have similar vibes? :) (Also, have you read Matomena Chomata by Dido Sotiriou?)
Similar to the Venetocracy AU? For all it's bad aging, I can't recommend the classic ballad Erotokritos enough. To me it's the pinnacle of chivalric love, and Aretousa's monologue refusing to marry anyone but Erotokritos and describing her nuptials with Death instead is just [chef's kiss]. Has me screaming every time! I also recently enjoyed the heist fantasy novel An Illusion of Thieves by Cate Glass, the subtle romantic subplot in that Italian Renaissance-inspired world is a whole mood.
I have started to compile a much longer list of what I call OC-adjacent media related to the 1920s AU, but as you said, it's mostly vibes, and some get extremely vague. I'll try and only give examples of content that is available in English translation, but Matomena Homata is one of them, which was translated to Farewell, Anatolia (I haven't gotten through Sotiriou's backlist yet, but so far it's been as lovely as it's been shocking). [tw for genocide, physical and sexual violence, war etc. apply for most of the recommendations]
Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides: The beginning of this in its entirety magnificent novel is probably the most striking account of the Catastrophe of Smyrna I have read. High-budget TV show when?
Birds Without Wings by Louis de Bernières: Idk why this Frenchman loves writing about Greek history so much, but I'll take it. This novel depicts the peaceful coexistence of cultures in Anatolia before nationalism took hold of Europe.
Little England (2013): Oh my god, my favourite movie... I'm sure the Picknick on Hanging Rock and Frantz girlies out there will understand. Andreas Konstantinou, main Alki hair inspiration, let me caress your nose.
Nyfes (2004): Perhaps more palatable to an anglophone audience (because less indie), and by the same director as the previous recommendation, this movie gives me the OC tingles each time.
Madonna in a Fur Coat by Sabahattin Ali: The best of pre-colapse Ottoman Empire and Weimar Republic combined, a lovely bit of classic Turkish fiction.
Poetry by Kostas Karyotakis: Get these vibes.
Titanic (1997): Yes, the Titanic. It's the drama, the class divide, the disaster for me. 5-year old me saw Billy Zane in Celine Dion's MV for "My Heart Will Go On" and thought I can fix him. So I did!
The Silence of Scheherazade by Defne Suman: WWI and its aftermath as experienced in Smyrna, told from Turkish, Greek and Armenian POVs. Another hard book to get through, read at your own discretion.
The Promise (2016): A historical the Armenian genocide starring Oscar Isaac. The sheer aesthetic of the absinthe-drinking hang-out scene... makes me lose my mind.
I haven't had the time to watch Smyrna, My Beloved and The Red River yet, but they are next on the list.

TW: political talk, mentions of war crimes and genocide, mentions of terrorism.
Preface and addendum, added 11 December 2023: I’ve been watching this conflict off and on for years now and have been keeping an eye on this most deadly wave of violence. Israel should not fucking exist; it is an apartheid state based in colonialism and only able to maintain funding and any legitimacy by using pity and guilt tactics against European nations and the United States (based in guilt or fears from after WWII) and propaganda that biases these nations further against Arab people who have lived there for centuries, vs American and European Zionist Jews who have only had a politically-recognized “nation” there since 1948. Yes, there were Jews in the Middle East (i will make another post later about why I as an Arab Jew hate that descriptor personally), and there have been Jews there since the dawn of Judaism. And Israel, as a “nation”, was originally written in sacred text to be a large family and community that defended itself when needed and only to the extent needed and other than that left everyone the fuck alone. The Israeli apartheid regime as we know it today is very well and truly NOT founded in scriptural law. I feel as if my post pre-addendum made it sound as if i thought the apartheid nation should continue to exist. I have never once believed it should; the extreme racism and violence against Arab people regardless of religion that i have previously discussed should more than show what i believe. And while yes, i do support Judaism as a religion and Jewish people (and why wouldn’t i as a fellow Jew?), i refuse to support, tolerate, or otherwise allow a genocide against my fellow human beings in Palestine.
Furthermore, Israel is a notoriously homophobic political entity, and the fact that the IDF is spreading propaganda that they are more tolerant than Palestinians is honestly bullshit, and it is a disgusting way to attempt to cover their own crimes and aggressions toward another marginalized community in order to further delegitimize and attack Palestinians.
Palestinian people have no food, no power, no water, and no hope of humanitarian aid because of the increasingly dangerous situation caused by the IDF and its allies and supporters.
FTRTTS🇵🇸
UPDATE: turns out part of my family is actually Palestinian too. My great aunt did a little digging and found some old papers. This was really stressful to learn on the same day I learned about the fact that there are no more hospitals in Gaza. I’m kind of going through it.
End addendum; original post begins below.
—————————
I’m not gonna make any more fucking comments about politics except in the United States for a while because my heart is torn to pieces by the act of a certain nation using white phosphorus over populated areas, which is a war crime, and murdering, displacing, and injuring (over the course of several years) over 2.4 million mostly innocent people, or 1.5 times the amount of people killed and displaced in the Armenian Genocide. On top of that, they started attacking a THIRD country. Also with white phosphorus, a chemical known to be so flammable that it burns people, buildings, trees, infrastructure, crops, etc., ON CONTACT.
The second nation mentioned is allegedly the main origin of a terrorist organization that has taken over 800 people hostage (the real causes of the conflict as it is currently unfolding), but the first nation’s response is disproportionately affecting civilians and not having the intended effect on the actual source of the conflict.
My heart is torn in two because my mother’s family is from one nation. My father’s family is from another. Both are now wrapped up in this conflict. And I can’t help but be mad on behalf of the poor civilians on all sides caught in the crossfire and the chemical weapons residue on all sides.
This is not to say I condone a terrorist organization taking hostages and murdering people. I loathe terrorism. But I do believe that this is something way larger than we’re all making it out to be and that there are facts being buried because they don’t suit a narrative. A fourth nation, nowhere near the geographic proximity of the affected areas, promised the same parcel of land for two of the nations and colonized the SHIT outta that land for many years.
And yes, I will share my complicated and nuanced feelings about this, as this will be my ONLY post on the subject.
I am Jewish, and I am Arab simultaneously. My family is not Palestinian, but Lebanese. White phosphorus is being poured over my family’s original homeland. Another ancestral group is the group using the chemical weapons over populated areas and committing a war crime. I don’t condone the actions of Hamas (edit: some of what i have read may be propaganda and i am attempting to find better sources), as they do not speak for the majority of the people of Palestine. I also do not condone the Israeli genocide of Palestinians over the past several years. As I mentioned before, the total casualty count of this genocide (and I WILL call it that since it does meet the criteria even if it isn’t formally recognized as such yet) is currently at least 2.4 million people, probably more. This is, as I’ve said, 1.5 times the casualties of the (formally recognized) Armenian Genocide, and over 1/3 the total of people killed in the largest formally recognized systemic murder of a target group or set of groups in human history.
Atrocities are being committed by a terrorist organization, but the response disproportionately affects civilians. Especially children. Most cases being treated by Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders), are Palestinian children. Actually, scratch that, nearly one hundred percent of cases. They as an organization have confirmed that number.
ADDENDUM: Médecins Sans Frontières have also just confirmed, as of about three hours ago, that BOTH SIDES of this conflict have been beheading CHILDREN. So far at least ten beheadings of children have been attributed to Israeli forces. We also must not forget that Hamas has also been beheading children, in much greater number that has yet to be successfully totaled. My heart goes out to the grieving Israeli and Palestinian mothers and fathers and siblings today.
UPDATE: the above may have since been proven incorrect and i am locating all possible sources to re-evaluate this statement.
Furthermore the injured are currently at immediate risk. See below.
I don’t agree with Hamas and their policies of beheading and assault (edit: as previously stated, these may have been disproven), but I don’t agree with any of this shit that the Israeli government’s response has caused. This isn’t antisemitism, this is being against human rights violations. The Zionist movement’s governing body does not speak for all Jews. Hamas does not speak for all Palestinians.
There really is a colonial power to blame for a majority of conflict since 1918, and that is Britain. Everything got SIGNIFICANTLY worse when the British came in and promised the same parcel of land to two groups of people, and then worsened even more at a rapid rate when the British left.
And now Lebanon has been dragged into the crossfire; i will edit this post if I find evidence of direct involvement of the Lebanese government in these events.
EDIT: as confirmed by Al Jazeera news, at least two Lebanese people and a journalist in Lebanon have been killed by Israeli air strikes. Israel has infringed on Lebanese airspace more than 22000 times since 2007. Lebanese rockets or similar very rarely land over the border.
But for now, I’m really against Hamas but also against the Israeli government’s decision to arbitrarily hurt civilians in their efforts to stop Hamas.

what the fuck does Armenia have to do with this also putting Nazi Germany and Israel on the same level as Armenia, when the Armenian Genocide is literally the reason H*tl*r thought he could get away with the Holocaust, Israel denies the Armenian Genocide ever happened, the IDF helped Turkey and Azerbaijan bomb and forcefully displace 150,000 Armenians from their homes in Artsakh just a month ago, and Israeli government officials congratulated Azerbaijan on said displacement and said they wanted to do the same and worse to Palestinian civilians is infuriating.

why are all antisemitism PSAs on here so dumb😭 yeah, there's no difference whatsoever between nazi germany, israel and... armenia? had to sneak sinophobic lies in here too🤢

Ivan Aivazowsky, The Massacre of the Armenians in Trebizond in 1895, engraving of a lost painting
"Uniting his political and aesthetic convictions, Aivazovsky enfolds a massacre scene into a serene panorama, the port [of Trebizond] sandwiched between an eerily calm Black Sea in the foreground and the mountains of the Pontus, sublime and majestic, rising high above. The setting of Trebizond and the Black Sea coastline was a favoured theme, frequently set on canvas by Aivazovsky (...) while the unfamiliar killing fields of Ottoman Armenia, which he had never visited, were studiously avoided. Similarly, an abundant profusion of tropes oft-utilised by the artist are liberally rendered across the canvas: mosques and minarets representing the oriental city; the evening, or perhaps dusk, setting enveloping the scene with a warm romantic glow; sailing ships, harking back to a bygone era, on a quiet sea, its surface static and unruffled; the distant lens subordinating the unfolding human activity to the vastness of the landscape."

This has to be a troll, but I’m pretty sure I’ve seen someone justify the BJP and Narendra Modi using SJ rhetoric.
My neighbors are Armenian. Armenians are white. White genocide isn't a thing. There has never been a genocide against whites. White people can't be oppressed especially not by people of color. Stop trying to make your racism seem woke.
Literally of all the bad-faith things you could have gone with to try to own me, genocide denial is really the one you chose, huh

In the spring of 1915, after the Ottoman defeat at Sarikamich, the Young Turk government attacked the Armenians who were victims of mass arrests, deportations and massacres. This genocide, organized by the most radical, will cause 1.3 million deaths.
