hello!
to start off, i just wanna say that i love your blog and it has been a wonderful archive and resource for kimono and japanese fashion history!
on that note, i was wondering if you happen to know about these tight sleeves worn by the main characters on jidaigeki? (circled in red)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
someone on reddit suggested that it could be a strip of sarashi wrapped around the arm, while this ask here said it could be a juban with its long sleeves bounded tightly (they did provide a link which is now unfortunately no longer available).
i was just wondering which is correct, and if these sleeves are historically accurate?
thank you! ☺️
Hi! Thank you for your kind words <3
Well technically one could use fabric strips to wrap arms (and legs), but it's dubious this would have been done unless you were a rag-wearer of some kind. This is inconceivable in a formal setting (first pic), and for well-off samurai (second pic).
To my knowledge, juban would not have been used like this either. Wrapping them would have looked wonky and felt uncomfortable considering juban tailoring.
Arm wrappers are in fact a whole category of "traditional" clothing, and generally called 手甲 tekkou, which designates any mittens-like arm bracers, tied with strings and/or kohaze clasps.
Tumblr media
Variations existed:
in length, for example 半手甲 wrist to elbow / 長手甲 wrist to upper arm often tied together on the bust
with or without part covering backs of hands, coming in different shapes and styles, attached or not with a loop around middle finger (山付き手甲, 手甲付き手筒).

Similar attire existed for legs, in form of gaiters/leg warmers called 脚絆 kyahan.
Tumblr media
(find more, including another "sexy" kyahan pic, and how to put them on here)
As a side note, vocab around mitten-like clothing can be confusing:
手甲 Tekkou, is the generic term for anything covering the arms and hands, including gauntlet/armored ones (which I know under the term 籠手 kote)
But you can also find the word 腕貫 udenuki = arm tube, which can made from several materials like rattan/bamboo (worn under sleeves to keep fresh during summer, or above them to protect sleeves when writing with a brush), or made from fabric (and used for warmth, to keep dirt away, etc. Also called 腕袋 udebukuro)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nowadays, both tekkou and kyahan are still super common sight during matsuri, as they are part of the attire of mikoshi bearers and taiko drumers (see this shop here and here):

Hope this helps :)

made a pair of blue dragon armwarmers! very cozy, and a huge improvement compared to my first attempt at this concept.
i learned a new technique to hand-cut each scale. then i machine sewed the lining and hand-sewed it all together with a sturdy blanket stitch :]

[ID: Two photos of a person wearing a crochet arm warming, holding it up in front of a computer with a blank document. The arm warmer is fingerless, with a hole for the thumb, and is made in half-double crochets, in a gradient yarn that goes from ice blue, to medium blue, to light purple. End ID.]
Vague pattern:
Make a foundation row of double crochets OR just make a regular base chain, wide enough to fit around your fingers. This will be the finger-end of the hand warmer.
Connect to form a circle, then make additional rows of half double crochets to the length you want above the thumb.
I made the top of this one longer so that I could unfold it to almost cover my fingers, and then I can roll it up like this if I want.
For the thumb hole, at the start of the next row, make a triple crochet at the start of the row, chain as many as you need to fit the width of the very base your thumb. Skip that number of stitches, and make another triple crochet. Continue the rest of the row as usual.
For the next row when you get to the gap, you can just crochet around the chain with the marching number of stitches (if you chained 3, make 3 half double crochets, ect.) or go into each of the individual chains. It doesn't really matter.
then just keep repeating the rows like normal. Depending on the shape of your arm vs your wrist, you can add increases every now and then.
There's no specific measurements because it'll change depending on your yarn, hook size, and shape of your hand and arm.
You can also do all double crochets, which will be faster to make, and more flexible, but less warm. You can also probably make fancier stitches too but IDK any lol

Arm warmers and balaclava hood. Improved version of the balaclava hood! I like the more loose knit style for the arm warmers! Arm warmers are a test run and were knitted with crochet for the edging. I had a few colours in mind for the arm warmers but thought I'd try with the basic cream yarn first.

first attempt at a new project: dragon-themed arm warmers!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
i got inspired by my local renfaire for these. many people there take it as an opportunity to dress up and enjoy a fantasy world. this feels like a kinda practical way to bring some of that joy to everyday life ^^
they feel nice, but look rough. i had never cut faux fur to look like scales before. i learned a ton, though, and the next pair i make will be better.
