btw thanks to a friend that was so kind to lend me her rain code copy (tysm arisa if you see this) I've been able to play it - im currently on the mystery labyrinth of ch2, so here's some impressions of the game under the cut (mind the spoilers) (and also dont send spoilers ty)

Love the visuals of the game! I think the 3d is implemented really well and the setting of Kanai Ward is really fun - I just wish there was a pc port because the switch hardware is just. man. I wish I could see everything in HD instead of 380p but it might just be the switch lite lmao

I like shinigami's magical esque's sequences I just hate that they reduced the utena reference to another sex joke. cant have shit in kanai ward

speaking of references, I do like the danganronpa easter eggs but I liked the ace attorney stepladder one even more

I also really like shinigami I just wish she would shut up sometimes

prologue was the strongest part of the game so far, MAYBE because it is reminescent of the 'locked place' murders in dr, maybe because everyone gets wasted, i dunno, it was just really fun

ch1 completely lacked what I'd call the emotional component that usually makes games like AA and DR stand out to me - ie I don't have any strong attachment to the victim or the accused, so I feel like I'm just solving puzzles. the puzzle part was still fun tho, and Halara is a great character

ch2 kinda fixed that emotional component with the girl-I-cant-remember-her-name-sorry that you spend time with before the second murder happens

ch2 also felt really fun from a campy perspective, with the disguise stuff going on!! (I do wish shinigami would stop calling yuma a pervert for trying to investigate a murder while dressed as a girl tho)

I do like chief yakou, he's cool in that very pathetic sad man kinda way

I really really love the sprite work, it's SO fun to look at the character's expressions,,, I also love desuhiko's goofy design, it's so fun

you can really feel the budget behind this one, unlike WEC that was just,,, a pain both gameplay wise and story wise, unfortunately 😔 I'm still sad it didnt turn out as good as I wanted it to be

like here are the canon relationships established by haniwa:

Aizou and Ken: two brothers that used to be close, fell apart because of their family falling apart, have been slowly piecing their bond back bit by bit

Ken and Arisa: two people that never thought they would fall in love!! ken being the type of person arisa hated!!!!! arisa being very different from the usual girls ken messed around with; tthey're different, but end up loving each other so much! it's a little messy, but they're working through it at their own pace. its nothing like ken's previous relatioships, but it makes him so happy aizou and yujiro: two idols that absolutely HATED each other at the start, forced to work together! but they realized that they really weren't that different, and had the same dream! and they care SO much about each other!!! though they're bad at showing it , haha . taking it from aizou himself, yujiro taught him what love was :')

aizou and arisa: these are mostly hanipre / one scene from the novels but!! aizou approves of arisa :) and they even laugh together and tease ken!!!! theyre literally already sibligns he's already accepted his sister in law sobsssfjsf

yujiro and arisa/ken: also hanipre exclusive, yujiro sees arisa and ken and thinks that that's the type of relationship that he would want..

The funny thing about friendship was that it was oftentimes something you felt creeping up on you when you didn’t expect it. Sure, you could like someone, and you could want to be their friend, but it wasn’t some obvious, glaring thing that just appeared in front of you and proclaimed itself as there. 

Minami was a good person. She was the kind of person who Arisa had seen be eaten alive by the world for no reason other than it felt like it, and she had shoved more than one of those good people down into its maw for no reason other than she felt like it. 

The other woman was, at first, vexing. She didn’t understand how she could be sorted into the same sin as Arisa had while not even knowing what a sugar scrub was. She was abrasive, a bit crude, rough around the edges, and basically everything that Arisa would describe herself as the opposite of.

It hadn’t lasted for long.

She’d brought to their lounge a stack of photos that Arisa, years ago, had shoved into the back of her closet and refused to look at in an effort to quash the existence of that smiling girl on them all for the sake of the boy beside that girl. It had been impossible to keep her mouth shut when prompted, excitedly bragging about the young boy as though she had any right. 

The three letters on the back were difficult to ignore, though. So, for the first time in three years, Arisa said her name to someone other than her own broken reflection in her bathroom’s mirror.

“It’s ‘Arisa.’ You can call me that, if you want.”

“…If you want, you can call me Minami, then.”

The company was easy, even in spite of their differences. She’d expected it to be a lot rockier with, well, just about everything about her, but it never seemed like Minami really cared about all of that. Not a single bit of it. She was aware of her caustic and acidic personality, and she just went with it. It was nice, being treated kindly by someone so good without the expectation that she earned that kindness through being “better.”

It was fun to just be able to talk with someone so completely different from her without judgment. Well, about the big things. She’s certain there had been a few moments where minor things got a raised eyebrow.

But Arisa would have never called them friends. It would be presumptuous of someone like her to call herself friends with someone like Minami–someone who she could so easily ruin, just like she had every other good person whose life she’d entered without a single care for their wellbeing. So, no. They weren’t friends. 

Until, that is, it turned out they were.

Miserable and left alone in a miasma of guilt and self-castration, Arisa had been jolted from the confinement she subjected herself to after Olwin’s death by a firm knocking on her door and concerned words from one of the very people she was trying to lock out to protect. When a door wasn’t enough to stop her and words didn’t seem to be doing much of anything at all and Minami continued to ask after her, she’d finally let the truth tumble from her lips.

“I don’t know where you got that idea, but we’re friends, ain’t we?”

It turned out they had been friends. A miserable person like her had become friends with someone as bright, strong, and inspirational as Minami, even if the other woman obviously didn’t see it that way. Every attempt Arisa made to emphasize to the other woman just how good she was fell flat. She hoped to one day be able to make her see herself in the way that she knew everyone else here saw her.

Arisa didn’t need someone to mother her or take care of her. She didn’t look to Minami for guardianship or as a protector. She looked to her as her friend. Honestly, one of her best friends. Ever. Period.

If you had told Arisa she’d feel that way about a forty-five year old mother of one mechanic who drank shitty American beer and told jokes even dads would groan at, she would have told you that you were out of your mind.

But she did.

And now, she’s dead.

A flicker of a memory long-buried scratches at the back of her mind. The life of a good person slipping through Arisa’s fingers while she’s incapable of doing anything. There had been nothing she could do then, and there had been nothing she could do now. Now, she was forced to watch her friend take her final breaths in front of her and die.

She stares for several, long moments, feeling bits of herself leave with each scratchy exhale, but she drags in new feelings alongside oxygen on each inhale. 

She’s mad. Angry. Furious. She finally understands that sin called Wrath in the way she feels a fire fill her, making her hands shake and her lungs shiver. Arisa craves that feeling of unrestrained violence, she wants to make it so that whoever did this begs the hostesses to drag them away with their stupid little magic circle and their meaningless execution. She wants to feel their blood on her fist the way she used to feel it when someone got too close to her and Mitsugi.

Arisa couldn’t protect any of her loved ones from anyone, but she could make the world pay for taking another good person away.

(Without this rage, there would be that same nothing that Minami had to drag her from weeks ago. Minami is not here. No one is here. Almost all of her friends have been damned, leaving her alone as she’s used to.

Grief is not an unfamiliar fabric to Arisa, but it is one she can’t afford to put on right now. Not while there’s work to be done.)
