Between holding a “real job” as an Outdoor Program Assistant Coordinator at a group home for at-risk youth and trying to get a side business off the ground--which means making time for it--I am a home-maker. And with that comes...ERRANDS.  Contrary to popular opinion, errands are kind of my nemesis. I live 20 miles out of town, and going into town means doing...everything. And I would usually rather be doing other things with my time. Like making stuff.  So, to cope with the relentless task of “errands”--grocery shopping, appointments, and other tasks that demand “heading into town”, I try to give myself a little treat on every venture. And lately, that treat has been California Hardwood Producers.  Traditionally, I have gotten my wood in one of four ways: 1) recycle it, like old pallets, furniture, my own and others scrap, etc.; 2) harvest or mill it privately with my “wood-cutting crew” at specific sites; 3) purchase and accept donations of privately milled wood; and, very occasionally 4) at a box store (usually for framing projects). However, I recently discovered California Hardwood Producers and was immediately hooked.  Built on the site of the old Cal-Ida Lumber Mill, which burned down in 1985, CA Hardwood has been in business for over 15 years. Privately owned, they specialize in both hardwood and flooring. After a few visits, I learned that they get a lot of wood locally through drop-offs (agreements with tree-services, private donation, etc.), and while they do import some exotics, they specialize in local hardwood. On my first visit, I purchased the walnut I used on my last project. Sadly, they didn’t have an affordable repeat--so I picked up some exotic Aripari as well as some Alder and English Walnut. This time, they swung me a great deal--which always helps, as I’m just getting off the ground.  While a lot of slabs are (understandably) expensive, I do seem to be able to find enough little scrap-piece deals to keep my need for exploring new woods satisfied--and I love having somewhere I can stop in and break up the monotony on my “trips into town.” Until next time!
