Witch Machines part 2
In part 2, Deryn says goodbye and gtfo
One the way back home, Deryn considered the proposal from another angle. If no one had ever left Sign before, he would be the first, which would be something worth showing off about after he came back. He stepped over another tree root as the path descended into the valley. It occurred to him that he had already adjusted to the idea of leaving Sign very quickly, given that it was completely unprecedented and would instantly change his life. He preferred not to think about why this might be. Instead, he started to plan the outfits he would need for the journey. By the time he reached the door, he had almost forgotten why all this was happening in the first place.
Kicking his shoes off and pushing the door open at the same time, he revealed his parents sitting on the floor and talking in hushed tones. They turned to look at him with quiet, worried expressions before bursting into simultaneous chatter.
“What did she say? Are you alright?” His mother wrapped an arm around his neck and pulled him down to her level.
“Elder Morlan came round! I told him you weren’t here, but he said—” his father began before Deryn could answer.
“It went better than expected, actually, but listen,” Deryn put a reassuring hand on their arms to deliver what he knew would be difficult news.
-----
The following morning, Deryn threw some of his most practical outfits and other pieces of clothing into a bag and sat on the floor to get ready. His mother poked her head around the door. She sighed. He continued to apply eyeliner, bending over a small mirror propped against the wall. She sighed again.
“It’s just all so sudden,” she said without him needing to say anything. “But if it’s what Neela suggests…”
Deryn’s parents had struggled to understand what leaving Sign would mean since it had never occurred to them that anyone would do so. But the promise that Deryn would come back made it easier for them to accept the prospect.
He straightened up and turned to face her. “I know. But I think it’s best if I got on with it and go now,” he said as cheerfully as he could. He did not want to admit that he was looking forward to leaving almost as much as he was afraid. “And I’ll be back before you know it,” he added.
She smiled fondly. “Well, we’ll be downstairs and when you’re ready we can go over to Neela’s.”
“Do you think a lot of people will be there?” he said as he ran fingers through straight black hair that he did not believe needed brushing.
“I think everyone will be there.”
She left the room as he got up to finish packing. He had not lived in this room long and had not had the chance to accumulate the fossils, snail shells, feathers, and particularly attractive blackened sticks he had magically burned that usually cluttered all of the rooms he had lived in. When moving somewhere new in the village, he would start the collection again. This happened every couple of years, as it did for most people in Sign. Homes were small and packed close in the valley, so it was common to move to new households or swap rooms for a very slight change in scenery, often starting in early childhood. A pine cone sailed through the open window and landed on the floor. Barely hesitating, he picked it up, went over to the window, and threw it back out.
“Ow,” said a young woman on the ground, rubbing her arm. She wore a long blue shirt tied at the waist and loose trousers similar to Deryn’s.
“Looks like my aim is getting better,” he said, leaning lazily on the windowsill. Arianan had started coming to wherever Deryn lived and getting his attention this way when they were children. Back then, they had still needed permission to go into the woods without supervision, and this remained as a fun habit.
“Get down here,” she hissed, beckoning.
Deryn climbed onto the windowsill and reached for a thick branch of the nearest tree. Then, stepping onto the branch below it and the one below that, he jumped onto the ground, cushioned by a layer of leaf litter.
“I saw what happened,” she said quietly.
“Everyone saw.”
So what’s happening now?”
He recounted the conversation he had had with Neela.
“What?” she gasped. “What does that mean?”
“It means I won’t be here for a while,” he said slowly, making what he thought was a clear statement more obvious. “They want me to go find a witch who can teach me more about magic and I’ll get better at it. But I’ll come back.”
“That’s so…” she paused. “I didn’t know we could do that.”
“Leave Sign or get better at magic?”
“Both, to be honest. It’s not like anyone talks about magic unless you’re involved.”
“That’s true,” he said, taking all the recognition he could get.
“How long will you be gone?”
“Not sure, but I’ll come back as soon as I can. I’ll really miss you.”
“I’ll miss you too,” she said, hugging him. He hugged back tightly.
-----
Deryn’s mother was correct, everyone in the village had turned out to see him off, huddled on doorsteps and perching in the surrounding trees. It was difficult to keep things secret for long in such a small community and everything since the fire was the most interesting thing that had happened for a long time, possibly ever.
Normally comfortable being the centre of attention, even Deryn felt embarrassed with so many eyes on him as he climbed up the steps to his aunt’s house. He went inside to receive the map to the witch’s house and shortly emerged with Neela.
“Today we add a new record to our archives!” Neela beamed. She had volunteered to make the announcement, wanting to keep the tone hopeful. “For the first time, one of us will leave Sign to go on a journey and, of course, return.”
Deryn stood by sheepishly. When Neela gestured for him to address the crowd, he straightened up and looked wide-eyed around at everyone he had ever known in his life.
“Um. Thanks for coming everyone.” He scanned the faces to find Elder Morlan, leaning on his daughter’s arm. He knew he needed to leave on a good note, and chose his words carefully, making sure to be both as endearing and serious as possible.
“Elder Morlan, I am really sorry about what happened. I’m also sorry I won’t be here to help fix your house, but it’s my responsibility to find the witch.” He scanned the crowd again. “I miss you all already.”
There was polite applause and murmurs from the crowd. They did not know what to make of what was happening were not sure how to respond.
Deryn went down to his parents at the foot of the steps and embraced them. After a tearful goodbye, he picked up his bag and walked through the crowd to a path leading to one of the many groves tended by the people of Sign. He turned and waved, trying to remain upbeat, then turned back and walked away.

ariana grande is one of the most annoying artists with one of the most annoying fanbases. Why are you going to hate on another woman for being a homewrecker and “stealing someone else’s man” when ariana grande literally. did that first like…. she took spongebob. she ruined a marriage with a kid for a dude who looks like spongebob if he used meth regularly like what the fuck. And her singing ability is subpar like i am so sorry but her high notes are not impressive when she just sounds annoying whenever it comes out of her mouth. mariah carreys high notes are ethereal….. you can feel them in your soul. ariana’s feel manufactured. she only does it to impress her little gay fans because it really doesn’t even fit into her songs. and then the racefaking. who could forget about all of that (besides the ariananators) and now they’re asking what’s wrong with her why does she look like that….. she’s confused whether she’s black asian or latina! she doesn’t know which race to fake now that she’s faked them all!

Thoughts : Fruitvale Station (2013)
Normally, I celebrate Black History Month on my social media page by posting different achievements, key moments and important figures from the African-American experience. There was something about 2020, however, that made me feel the need for change… mainly, it was the fact that Black Americans continued to be the victim of race-based violence at a disproportionate rate, even in the midst of a pandemic. Based on the continued instances of said violence, I felt the need to make a shift in terms of what I shared on my timeline, so I adopted the #SayTheirNames approach. In doing so, Oscar Grant was a clear cut name for the list, but that also made me realize that I’d never taken the time to sit down and watch Ryan Coogler’s debut film, Fruitvale Station.
On New Year’s Eve 2008, Oscar Grant (Michael B. Jordan) begins his day staving off an argument with his girlfriend Sophina (Melonie Diaz) and preparing his daughter Tatiana (Ariana Neal) for school. He calls his mother Wanda (Octavia Spencer) to wish her a happy birthday, and during a stop at the grocery store to pick up stuff for her party, he meets a young woman named Katie (Ahna O’Reilly) who is preparing for a party of her own. In need of money, Oscar attempts to sell some weed to his friend, but after a moment reflecting on his last stint in jail, he dumps the weed and chooses to change his life for the better. Oscar, Sophina and Tatiana attend Wanda’s birthday party, and afterwards, Oscar decides to celebrate New Year’s Eve night in San Francisco. Wanda convinces Oscar to take the BART, and during his ride, he is recognized by Katie from the grocery store. She calls out to him, which notifies another man on the BART of Oscar’s presence, and based on their prison history, a fight breaks out. The BART Police get involved at Fruitvale Station in Oakland, and while Oscar and a number of others are being detained, a scuffle breaks out between Oscar and two of the police : Officer Caruso (Kevin Durand) and Officer Ingram (Chad Michael Murray). The struggle escalates, leading to the shooting and eventual tragic death of Oscar Grant on New Year’s Day, 2009.
In the hands of a lesser director, the tragic tale of Oscar Grant would be milked for every bit of emotional and dramatic beat that can be amplified and exploited, but in the hands of Ryan Coogler (and in his debut no less), Coogler gives us a true slice of life presentation of the struggles that trip up even the most well-intentioned young men, and the underlying aspirations to eliminate them. The tragedy that beset Grant, as commonplace as it has become these days, is about as much of a twist ending as that of the film Titanic, so instead, we are shown Oscar Grant taking stock of his life with all the pomp and circumstance of an instruction manual. In my mind, it feels like Coogler and all involved decided to not only make Oscar Grant as relatable as possible, but also show how his last day on Earth had the same ups and downs of any other one.
The strongest aspect of this film is its immediate and deeply penetrating honesty. Before we are properly introduced to the actors portraying their very real counterparts (properly, meaning we hear them before we see them), our first visual stimulus is the actual footage of Oscar Grant’s last moments that lead to his death. Once the actual film starts, there are no airs put on in an attempt to make Oscar Grant an angel… instead, we are shown Oscar attempting to reconcile the broken trust in his relationship, stating his intention to sell weed in order to make money and even driving a car while operating a cellular phone. We are also shown his attempts to connect with and support his daughter, as well as a birthday text and phone call to his mother, therefore humanizing Oscar as we join him on his tragic journey.
Using a handheld camera grounds the film in reality, making it feel more like a documentary than a dramatic retelling. The film has a similar energy and pacing to Gus Van Sant’s Death Trilogy, particularly the film Elephant, in the way that we are shown every mundane element involved in the march toward tragedy, with the main difference being that this story is true. The film looks great in terms of the way it captures the Bay Area, but ultimately, this film was not made as a vehicle to impress viewers with its flashiness. This is a film with a righteous agenda, and it more than holds up its end of the bargain in terms of achieving its goals.
Michael B. Jordan has always had a knack for mixing underlying emotion and a very natural screen presence, which works well in this character study of a life cut short too soon. Melonie Diaz matches Jordan’s natural energy, but not at the expense of displaying her sense of urgency to have the needs of her and her child met. Ariana Neal gives a strong performance for such a young actress as she manages to be charming without being cheesy, and at times, incredibly pensive for such a young mind. Octavia Spencer does what she does best, bringing a loving presence and a motherly sternness to her character that validates Oscar’s choices to shift his life in the right direction. Ahna O’Reilly turns on the charm, making her the kind of beacon that a stranger would gravitate to in hopes of a connection. Key supporting performances by Kevin Durand, Chad Michael Murray, and appearances by Christina Elmore, Tamera Tomakili, Chris Reidell, Denzel Worthington, Jonez Cain, Jasmin Bristow and a host of others fill out the cast for this sad tale.
This film was every bit as moving and powerful as everyone said it was. The fact that I knew how sad an ending I was headed for did not deter my enjoyment of how well the film was made, or how impressed I was by how carefully and respectfully the story was handled. The circumstances surrounding the film are no doubt tragic, which makes this film an important piece of film and cultural history that I will do my best to share with any and everyone willing to listen.
