Thinking of running a mini-tournament after this with all the movies that have either come out since this started or that no one nominated but can feel free to now if they want. Another option is @bestanimatedmovie is doing polls for individual movies where you rate them (if you've seen them) from 1 to 5 and that's been kind of fun, might do that.
#these aren't mutually exclusive#examples for the first one would be ari and dante saltburn good grief#maybe others idk but the first and last came out too late and no one nominated saltburn#ari and dante will be included by default because i've seen it and will nominate it but the others will have to be nominated by someone els#it was fantastic btw the book is still better because it's the best book ever but still a great movie#not a poll

Finally watched the Ari and Dante movie and it was visually beautiful but it left me wanting...more. The movie was so short (less than two hours long) and left out alot of important scenes. The actors were great, the script was lacking. Everyone spoke in short sentences. It felt a little disjointed, like I was seeing snapshots of the entire story. I still enjoyed it and I teared up a couple of times.
#ari and dante#i relate to ari alot :(#go watch it#not as good as the book but worth it to watch since it is so short

perhaps i have a pattern of liking queer characters in their teens in the 80s who are stupidly good at art and in love with their best friend
#obviously ari and dante is the first one#the other one is will byeres lol#about me#if i had a nickel#every time i fell in love with a character who is queer and good at art and in love with this best friend i'd have two nickes#which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice#dante is not my favorite character in that book but i do love him so he counts

I understand the sentiment authors should write what they know but my God I am sick of the protaganist of every novel wanting to be a writer.
#books#authors#this is about aristotle and dante#which i logically forgive anyway since i already knew this book was heaily influenced by the authors life#which is what makes it so good#but theres always a sigh of of course you want to be an author#its like a 4th wall break#like ari saying he wants to write about boys falling in love im like okay this is very much benjamin talking#i love it tho#like ari should absolutely write queer romance#i am also a writer btw

I only have two historical fiction books on my shelf? a few more if you count historical fantasy or historical romance or whatever blended genres but of purely historical fiction, I really thought I'd loved more of it....
#mine#hmmm#i know i don't read it much but i know when i do read it i really consistently love it#oh wait k i'm realizing w&p and evelyn hugo and daisy jones all count.#w&p i think of as a classic and like tjr books Are historical fiction they're just so recent and more about characters than time periods or#events or whatever so i'm not like ah yes that historical novel i'm like ah yes that novel that is historical#the og two are eighth life and code name verity my beloved forever and ever#oh wait also forgot every hidden thing. that's regular historical fiction pure and simple. also amazing.#i also have the boundless at home that's just not on this shelf#that was a fun one too but not as good as every hidden thing#eht needs way more recognition is was imo kenneth oppel's best book#bit more grown up than his usual stuff but it was really the vibes that did it for me#other thna that i loved the starclimber series can't remember the first book's name#they were fun#never read silverwing no one shoot me#oh i guess in the same vein as tjr ari and dante are also historical fiction#i take it back me and historical fiction are besties everyone give me further recs please also

Silly Little Sebastian Sallow HCs
I LOVE that I’ve seen so many headcanon posts recently because I devour all of them. Here’s me throwing in my two cents with a bunch of random tidbits I’ve sprinkled into my fic/writing 🖤
He’s almost always on time. Though he can be a bit disorganized when it comes to schoolwork (hard to keep track when you’re doing your own side projects too), punctuality is important. Literally attached at the hip to his pocket watch.
Speaking of the pocket watch, it was his father’s.
Takes both Ancient Studies and Ancient Runes as electives.
His amortentia smells like pine from Scotland’s forests, smoke (a la confringo), old books, and the candies he likes to snack on 24/7.
Following that, Sebastian is a huge foodie and loves to cook for his friends/family.
Favorite color is red (a rich, dark shade like maroon)
Has a big soft spot for nifflers.
Loves Shakespeare - Macbeth and A Midsummer Night’s Dream are his favorites
Really just loves all fictional literature; from Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice to Dante’s Inferno and Homer’s the Iliad.
Chaser for Slytherin but isn’t the biggest Quidditch fan otherwise (he just enjoys the glory and excitement of a good competition)
Super stealthy. The only person who can (usually) catch him before he sneaks up on them is obviously Ominis.
Actually a fair dancer - he and Anne used to make up routines in their living room when they were little
Dances a good ceilidh, too. (kilt kilt kilt)
Born in Aranshire and traveled a lot in his youth, as his parents’ research demanded it.
Is terrified of the Black Lake after having an awkward run-in with the giant squid his first year…but loves to swim elsewhere
Secretly hates his freckles :( but overall, he’s fairly confident in his looks - without being cocky (man knows the effects he has on ~ the ladies ~ (and gents) he just doesn’t always understand it).
The scar on his lip is from Anne scratching him during a fight over a toy at age 6.
Not the most “traditional” guy, but he IS a hopeless romantic after giving him time to be comfortable showing it.
Loves starting ridiculous arguments with Ominis when he’s bored
^^ man needs CONSTANT stimulation
Birthday is October 24, 1874; he’s a Scorpio sun, aries moon, gemini rising
Might add onto this whenever the urge strikes 😇

oooh thanks for the tag! i'm so excited for both of those fics!!
this is the tentative start of chapter 17 for prince simon, i'm also just gonna do more than the last line for a bit more context lol:
Simon stopped in his tracks, reaching out to squeeze Wilhelm’s wrist before looking around and quickly taking his hand away again. “I’m kissing you right now.” Wilhelm’s lips twitched. “Why?” Simon raised his hands, looking almost exasperated. “Because I love you? Because, little prince, somehow you got through Josue’s thick skull and he’s clearly trusting you in a way that he doesn’t any of us.” Wilhelm blushed, shaking his head. “In that case, I’m kissing you back.” Simon smirked, knocking his shoulder against Wilhelm’s. “Good, it would’ve been awkward otherwise.”
idk who to tag though so if you feel like it go for it lol
Share the last line of your work in progress and then tag as many people as you like.
ty for the tag @malinthebodyguard !!!!
i couldn’t decide if i wanted the last line i’d written for my rwrb au or my prince simon au so y’all are getting one from each 😌 (they’re more last few lines but i’m making the rules)
tagging @prince-simon @toffeelemon @aro-of-artemis @ungaroyals
Tell me what you need (You look so free)
Wille looked at the message before putting his phone face down, letting his head fall back against the seat rest as he took a deep breath. He wasn’t ignoring Simon again, he wouldn’t after last time - he’d promised - but he needed a clear head going back to Hillerska. At least until he was alone again in his room, the one place he would allow himself to be vulnerable.
Healthy Choices: Relationships, Sexuality and Family Planning
Now that the adrenaline has stopped coursing through him he feels his previous exhaustion begin to catch up again, the sleep he’d been woken up from threatening to overtake his body. He’s still achy from being sick and doesn’t want to move, so he leans his head back against the wall as his eyes start to drift close. Alex is vaguely aware of his head tilting to the side, resting on Henry’s shoulder as he falls back asleep.
#prince simon au#young royals#tag game#did i get inspired by my recent reread of ari&dante for this?#well actually it was the first time reading the second book but whatever#anyway i'm very excited for this chapter#i think it could be a good one

Do you sometimes just read about topics the sake of it even though you've already gone through it a hundred times?
yes...be it rereading books i love (augh cmbyn and ari and dante are good ones because i forget the details of what happens in them) or just stories from greek mythology. i have reread stephen fry's mythos a couple of times, because more than anything it relays the same stories in an incredibly entertaining way!!

I FINALLY watched Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe and I must say this was an excellent example of a book to screen adaptation. The pacing and the atmosphere are so similar to the book (which could be a good or bad thing, I think an hour into the movie I was like "alright lets wrap things up already"). The dialogue and the characters are so much more realized in the movie like I think this book was actually meant to be a movie.
Also I am obsessed with the guy who played Ari. He brought so much charisma, charm, and humor to the character and from certain angles, dude was serving LOOKS. I really think this movie could've been his Call Me By Your Name breakout moment under different circumstances. It made me excited to see him in other stuff, I want to see him in other stuff. And seriously thank GOD they got someone who sounds like he actually speaks Spanish. While the book tries to imply that others can tell Ari is lonely and maybe a little different, it's SUCH subtext (because all we get is Ari's perspective and denial). In the movie you can definitely feel it more. You can feel Ari's anger, you can feel the tension between him and his dad and you get it. The dad's speech at the end makes more sense though it could've had a bit of a harder impact. I also think Dante makes more sense as a person thanks to his actor but he was somehow a little one-noted so the book gets a point there for being able to expand on it's characters more.
If I were to ask for anything, I'd ask for more looks and touches exchanged between the two boys but in the end I don't think that'd be accurate for Ari's character. I also think the ending in the book felt rushed and it's still prevalent in the movie but it works just a bit better when we can see and feel how quickly everything goes down. Lastly, I don't remember if Ari outright insults Dante after their first kiss but I wish they'd done that scene a little differently in the movie.
Anyway final review, a strong 8/10 for book to film adaptations.

Not a Heartstopper question today exactly, but I LOVE LOVE reading books with good queer rep, especially YA! Please reblog with your favorites!
I’ll start with a few of mine:
Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe ~ Two Mexican American boys living in El Paso meet at the swimming pool over the summer and forge an intense friendship that slowly turns into something more. I love how subtly the love story creeps up on you! Ari and Dante are more of my sweet fictional boys. Also, the movie should be out worldwide this year sometime! *squees*
The Charm Offensive ~ Basically the author said, I’m going to write about The Bachelor but make it queer af. Dev and Charlie are so sweet, and I love the way mental health is addressed!
Wolfsong ~ Okay so I never thought I’d read, much less enjoy, much less recommend a book about werewolves, but Bookstagram broke me down. And I’m so grateful! One of my favorite books I read last year. It’s a literal page turner, and I’m so obsessed with the world-building and giant found family! Joe Bennett must be protected at all costs. (The bit where he puts on a tux for their first date because he’s literally waited 6 years. I cry 😭)

I FINALLY WATCHED THE ARI AND DANTE MOVIE AND I HAVE THOUGHTS!!!!!!!!!! BUT IM LITERALLY GOING TO COPY AND PASTE MY EXCESSIVELY LONG LETTERBOXD REVIEW BECAUSE I CAN NEVER BE CONCISE EVER AND I DONT THINK I CAN EXPRESS MY FEELINGS BETTER PLS ENJOY:
this is one of my favorite books ever. i read it during a difficult time in my life and it helped me process a lot of my feelings. which makes the act of judging this movie feel impossible. i loved the acting, especially max pelayo's performance as ari. the costuming was... questionable. while book ari would never be caught dead in a crop top and short shorts, i appreciated this choice because i found it funny. this film was so beautifully shot, every single shot adds to the story the same way that the literary elements add to the layers in the book. i felt like the book's dialogue didn't translate to screen super well because it's so stilted, made some of it feel more awkward than necessary. so back to camera work! it was so visually stunning and then it ended in crappy cgi which was disappointing. i honestly can't tell how good the pacing and flow of the movie is because i know the book's plot too well. as with many book to film adaptations, im disappointed by some of the cuts made. however i loved seeing tia ophelia before her death. but at the end of the day, there were more cuts than additions/expansions and that's frustrating. i have a strong urge to reread the book now. also they should've let ari say the word "fuck". overall the book was better but it was an endearing, heartfelt adaptation with beautiful performances and cinematography and im happy it exists

Really good changes/additions in the Ari & Dante movie:
the heightening of Ophelia's role. the book is very tell-dont-show about her relationship with ari, which i don't think is Bad, but I actually think her actually being around is a very welcome addition
the COSTUMING!! we never get outfits described in the book, but the way they styled everyone, especially dante. his outfits were just Right. his goofy gay sunglasses were so perfect .
the shoes on the wire. sad we lost the shoe throwing game, but the fact that it was ari's idea to tie one of each of their shoes together, as a promise of their friendship! it was really good!!!
Dante's sketches. similar to costumes, not really a change, (and I don't like the change in how they were introduced) but they felt very much like things He Would Draw, in a style and ability that felt super accurate for a fifteen-year-old.
i liked that the conversation about their "rules" (no kissing ari rule) was immediately before dante asked to kiss him. I think it's also good in the book, but as far as having to cut things for time, I actually felt like that held momentum really well
#all the other changes were. either necessary and i get it or actively kind of weird#first 30 minutes of this movie were perfect#aristotle and dante discover the secrets of the universe

So, I just finished Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe. Well I'm not crying right now which is disappointing, but I was sobbing yesterday and had to stop and go to sleep so now I just read the last 3% of it.
For context, I had watched the movie a little while ago, because I saw it being talked about on twitter a bit, and tbh I thought it was pretty meh? But I was curious and I saw so many people saying the book was so much better or, just so great in general so I decided to read it.
And wow did it not disappoint!!! I knew the major plot points but I didn't mind it at all. It was so easy to read, to get into Ari's head, to feel like we're a part of their friendship ourselves.
I love me some good amount of characters just reflecting about themselves and about their life, and well, clearly this has a lot of that. I always wanted to just keep going, to continue living with them, I don't know how to explain.
I'm so in love with like, everyone in this. These parents are probably the best parents in the history of YA stories lol. Dante is the perfect little manic pixie dream girl to fall in love with, but he's so believable and vulnerable, yet also strong at the same time. His feelings about his heritage is one of the things that keep him more grounded (and I kinda like that Ari isn't the one dealing with that). Ari in his teenage angst and existential dread was so easy to relate to. I felt for him at every turn, even when I was slightly annoyed. I actually can relate to so many things about him even if I don't think our personalities are actually that close: Having such a nice intimate relationship with my mom, not really knowing how to talk to and get to really know my dad, having those girls at school who bother you all the time and are kinda your friends. And well, being bored and depressed and not having many friends, if that counts. I also broke a leg a few years ago, so even the parts related to the accident...
I thought it was great that the book wasn't just about romance, both in how it's more about friendship at first, and in how it has so much else going on in Ari's life and his family and everything. Not because I don't want all the romance, but just because it feels so much like we're actually in Ari's life, getting to deal with everything that is going on with him and around him.
I thought the way Dante's sexuality was handled was very interesting. I like that they make it pretty clear that he's gay, even without saying the word. I like that he just says it to Ari, because in so many stories it's like a shared discovery between the two characters, and when it's not then one is already out when they meet. I always end up empathizing more with the character that's in that position, so I got protective (...don't even get me startes on what he goes through) and also just so... I don't know how to say but it's Interesting to have Ari's pov as the "straight friend" (who wr know it's actually not lol) during that.
Despite this being a romance, it has also sadly reminded me of my old best friend from school, who I just haven't kept in touch with. The way we just clicked, despite my reluctance to open up at first. I'm sad that we didn't get even closer and continued being friends after it. Mostly by my own fault.
Anyway out of this tangent, I don't think there's a single thing about this that I didn't love. The moment that really got me towards the end was when Ari's dad talks about the accident. "I think you love him more than you can bear". Witj the way Ari is clearly so against talking about it because he knows deep down that it's the proof of his love...
I think if I had read the book, I would have liked the movie more, just for seeing the book play out on screen. I thought the actors were pretty good and I imagined them reading. But it just doesn't quite stand on its own as a film. It needed like 30 more minutes or so, and like I've seen someone say, a book with so much inner monologue it's probably hard to adapt.
Either way, I'm so fucking glad that there's a second book!!! I'm so excited for it. I can't wait to just, see all their parents' reaction at their relationship. I am wondering how different is it gonna be in tone with them being together now? How are things gonna be handled in general? I'm so eager to find out.
