it still angers me that trc didn’t take place over the course of a full year. we are told at the beginning of trb that gansey will die between this st marks eve and next. this seems to imply the series will be bookended by st marks, and that perhaps the climactic foretold death will take place as they approach the next spring with a building sense of doom and inevitability. this is one of the few places where i actually remember my thoughts during the first time i read the series, and i clearly remember assuming that would be the case. it’s literally a cycle. ok, maybe we could’ve done one season per book, with book 4 approaching the end of winter/early spring when st marks occurs. it seems like we are on the right track- book 1 occurs over the spring, book 2 the summer. but then book 3 and 4 are both just the fall??? the symbolism couldve been there man. bllb couldve had all these autumn metaphors about the border between life (first half of the series, spring/summer) and death (gansey’s, winter). and trk couldve been like winter, but late- we get to see the leaves start to bud again. it’s a fucking cycle man. i have been thinking about this since 2016.

Man, side order (from a story standpoint) is so frustrating. It's not like rotm, which is such a utter mess that you have to make significant changes to make it even remotely coherent. In Side Order, the ingredients are all there. They nailed the concept down to create a really interesting and unique story... but then they didn't use any of it. Why, Nintendo? Why did we never get to see the effects of grayscaling on any of the actual characters? Why didn't Deep Cut become less energetic and engaging than they usually are in their news broadcasts? Why didn't the same thing happen to the Squid Sisters in Alterna? Hell, why didn't the same thing happen to like Murch and Sheldon or anyone else who had Palettes in the Memverse? Why is Agent 4—man, why did you do Agent 4 so dirty??? It frustrates me so goddamn much, hence why I'm currently working on my own little rewrite of Side Order. I love the concepts it presents (grayscaling in particular has a lot of angst potential... I have been craving a good grayscaling-related angst fic ever since Side Order came out but there has yet to be any), but for some godforsaken reason it doesn't use any of them. Like, why do we have to fight goddamn Smollusk ten times to reconfigure all of the Palettes when we could fight like a weird grayscaled jelleton version of the palette owners instead? That would be so much better! But no 😔

my romanian teacher is doing things differently this year and not just giving us books to read but also films to watch. so far i’ve had to watch finding forrester, good will hunting (but i am yet to watch that one, whoops), scent of a woman, mona lisa smile and today came dead poets society. guess who just came puffy-eyed and crying waterfalls out of that one?
