The Chedda of Tlemcen or Lebset El Arftan, inscribed since 2012 on the Unesco Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, is one of Algeria’s most luxurious traditional attires. It is the first and only dress acknowledged as being part of the world cultural heritage because of its layering of several costumes and elements dating back to different eras. Indeed, the Chedda is known as being the traditional attire worn by the Zianid princesses during the 13th century. Over the course of time, multiple elements reflecting new established civilizations and dynasties in Tlemcen will be added to the attire.
Tlemcen has been known as a thriving commercial hub at the crossroads between North Africa and Europe. its tailors, craftsmen, jewelers were known for the quality and the beauty of their fabrics and jewelry all over the Maghreb.
The craftsmen’s savoir-faire was part of the emergence of the chedda and is, still today, required to keep this ancient and opulent attire alive and prevent its fall into disuse.
