Private funeral service held for Freddie Mercury
UPI ARCHIVES NOV. 27, 1991
LONDON -- Family and close friends, including Elton John, gathered Wednesday for the cremation of Freddie Mercury, the lead singer of the rock group Queen, who died of AIDS during the weekend.
Wreaths lined the entrance of the West London Crematorium where a 25- minute private service was conducted by two Parsee priests.
A single red rose was placed on top of the coffin which was carried into the chapel as Aretha Franklin's rendition of 'Precious Lord Take My Hand' was played, followed by 'You've Got a Friend,' said Queen spokeswoman Roxy Meade.
The ceremony ended with Mercury's favorite aria, 'D'amour sull 'ali Rose' composed by Verdi and sung by Montserrat Cabelle, who joined Mercury in a duet on his solo album 'Barcelona.'
Fellow Queen members Brian May, Roger Taylor, and John Deacon attended the funeral along with pop stars Elton John and Anita Dobson. Queen had described the flamboyant Mercury as the 'most beloved member of our family.'
Flowers sent to Mercury by fans were carried in five hearses to the service, which was attended only by family and close friends, Meade said. The flowers were later distributed to AIDS wards in London.
Queen announced Wednesday it planned to re-release its best selling hit 'Bohemian Rhapsody' next month and donate the profits to charity

Ronald Milner (May 29, 1938 – July 9, 2014) was a playwright. His play Checkmates, starring Paul Winfield and Denzel Washington, ran on Broadway.
He grew up on Hastings Street, known as “Black Bottom”. It had “Muslims on the corner, hustlers and pimps on another, winos on one, and Aretha Franklin singing from her father’s church on the other”, said Geneva Smitherman, author of Black World. He would tell David Richards in a Washington Star interview: “The more I read in high school, the more I realized that some tremendous, phenomenal things were happening around me. What happened in a Faulkner novel happened four times a day on Hastings Street. I thought why should these crazy people Faulkner writes about seem more important than my mother or my father or the dude down the street. Only because they had someone to write about them. So I became a writer.” He attended Northeastern High School. He attended Highland Park Junior College and Detroit Institute of Technology.
He won the John Hay Whitney Foundation fellowship to help aid him to complete a novel, “Life With Father Brown,” which remains unpublished. He went to New York City to join Harvey Swados’s writing workshop at Columbia University. Under the mentorship of Langston Hughes, he was able to get a Rockefeller Foundation grant.
His first break came with Who’s Got His Own. The play begins with the funeral of a harsh father, Tim Bronson, and ends with a tentative rebirth for his long-suffering widow and his embittered son and daughter, Tim, Jr., and Clara. The unsuspected truths that Mrs. Bronson is driven to reveal about their father ultimately enable Tim and Clara to see the real lives of their parents, as painful as it is. The expression that has historically been thwarted, which is primarily at the core of the play, is the question of black manhood. The protagonist is a highly combative and alienated son, torn by despair over ever being able to respect or love a father he has long since written off as a fierce tyrant at home and a coward at work. The show toured colleges in New York before going to the Lafayette Theatre. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

Alice Russell - I Am - new album has been a long time coming (11 years)
Alice Russell is universally acclaimed as one of the best modern soul voices of our time, while her raw talent and charisma commands attention and affection. The much-loved British soulstress returns with the most personal album of her career, 'I Am' is vulnerable and bold, while addressing how we must all work on ourselves to heal – so that we can love and connect with those and the world around us more honestly and deeply. Life, loss and grief have been a central part of this period and a new approach to creating music: “Two little ones have joined me, and one has left - my Dad passed away the summer after ‘To Dust’ was released. The day after my Dad’s funeral, I found out I was pregnant with my first little one.” Alice continues: “The grief journey has cracked me open and created a more urgent need to be focused and try to go deeper with how I communicate creatively and who I AM today, and I welcome it with open arms”. Written and produced alongside long-time collaborator TM Juke, 'I Am' is the first offering of new music from the iconic singer in over a decade and marks a new era in the remarkable career of the down-to-earth vocal powerhouse. In summer 2023 Alice graced the main stage of Gilles Peterson’s We Out Here, supported Nile Rogers and performed as part of a tribute to Aretha Franklin across France, marking her return to the stage, where she belongs.

sometimes i criticize ariana grande a fucking bunch like I really cannot comprehend her severely damaged track of thought and life pace (esp as an old listener of her first 3 albums) but if i was a child star for a pederast tv cable company and then had a concert get bombed and kill beloved fans and then have an ex die of an OD to then afterwards get molested at aretha franklin’s funeral i would be acting a little crazy too

ARETHA FRANKLIN
ARETHA FRANKLIN
1942-2018
QUEEN OF SOUL
Aretha Franklin was born at her family home in Memphis, Tennessee, US. Her father was a Baptist minister and preacher who became wealthy and well-known. In 1979, her father was shot by burglars, fell into a coma and died. Her mother was a piano player and vocalist who inspired her musically. Her mother died in 1952 just before Franklin turned 10 years-old. Franklin was looked after by numerous members of the family and learned how to play the piano from an early age.
At the age of 14, Franklin was singing gospels in churches and was just a teenager at the time of her first recording. In the 1960s she mixed gospel, blues, with pop music and became successful in the charts with her song ‘Respect’ (1965). Her first single, ‘I never loved a man (the way I love you)’ gained her instant fame. In 1968 she sang at Martin Luther King Jr’s funeral. In 1980 she appeared in The Blues Brothers (1980) and in 1985 she paired up with Annie Lennox to sing ‘Sisters Are Doin’ It for Themselves’ (1985).
Franklin was married twice and had four children. She first became pregnant aged 12 and had her second child when she was 15, fathered by Edward Jordan who we know very little about. The children took her surname and Franklin wrote in her Will that Jordan should receive absolutely nothing and underlined this twice. She was married at the age of 18, and endured abuse from her first husband; she married her second husband in 1978 which ended up in divorce in 1984. Franklin lived in Detroit as well as Los Angeles. She wouldn’t perform overseas due to a fear of flying after going through a bad experience on a small plane due to turbulence in 1984.
Franklin was involved in movements such as civil rights, rights for Native Americans as well as the rights for women.
Franklin struggled with her weight during her life time; she used to be a chain smoker and struggled with alcohol. In 2013, she cancelled performances due to health problems and after treatment she continued to perform in 2013 and stopped touring in 2017. Franklin died on 16 August 2018, aged 76, from pancreatic cancer. She was interred at Woodlawn Cemetery, Detroit.

Disneyland gets the best in Bishop Marvin Sapp
The Disney experience has been an integral part of the lives of Bishop Marvin Sapp and his children. Sapp and his family have made annual trips to the Happiest Place on Earth for the greater part of more than two decades. The magic never gets old for the longtime minister and veteran gospel singer. “I’m a Disney fanatic,” Sapp said during a video conference interview. “ For the last twenty-seven years, my children and I have gone to Disney World twice a year. We go every August, and we go every Christmas. And that has been our thing as a family… to the point that my daughter…she has Disney stock."
Bishop Marvin Sapp performs during the funeral service for Aretha Franklin at Greater Grace Temple, Friday, Aug. 31, 2018, in Detroit. Franklin died Aug. 16, 2018 of pancreatic cancer at the age of 76. (AP Photo/Paul Sancya) “So the fact that they thought enough of me to invite me to be a part of such an amazing event, I’m just honored. I’m just ready to get there, hit the stage, and give my very best, and hopefully, you know, people will be blessed by that which they hear, we share, ” he added. This year, Sapp, the recipient of 24 Stellar Awards and 13 Grammy nominations, was invited to participate in the Disneyland Celebrate Gospel mega event, which features local and well-known gospel choirs. Sapp, along with Tasha Cobbs Leonard, are the headliners as Disneyland incorporates the sound of gospel music into the theme park as part of its Black History Month homage. Known for his gospel-tuned megahits “The Best in Me” and “Never Would Have Made It,” Sapp’s adoration for the Magic Kingdom is not about the rides. What has made the Disney touch come alive for the “My Testimony” singer is the entire ambiance of what Disney is about, he said. “Whenever I go to Disney, I look at things different than most people go,” Sapp said. “I can count the number of rides that I’ve ridden on the last twenty-something years. But whenever they’re doing a re-model or they’re building something, they always put plaques of you know, things that Walt Disney had said or different statements. When they have their parades or when they do their shows, they always have a message that’s in there that’s positive, that talks about what you can do and what you can accomplish.” “And honestly, as a preacher of the gospel of Jesus Christ, you know, that environment in itself, you know…I go there just to retreat and to be around that environment and literally forecast for my future and forecast for my church’s future. So we can say that it’s a magical place. I choose to think that it’s an empowering place that gives you…For me, it ignites the fire on the inside of me that allows me to go back home and do great exploits.” Sapp is one of the greatest gospel singers in the world. Disneyland and its guests are blessed to have this phenomenal singer and minister in their presence. The month of February is celebrated worldwide in recognition of all the contributions Black Americans have given to the United States and worldwide. From slavery to the Reconstruction era to Jim Crow to today, at the core of the existence of the Black American experience has been the gift to sing our hearts out. My grandmother and mother used to sing those old hymns around the house all week and on Sunday mornings when we attended church. The sounds of gospel stalwarts like Mahalia Jackson, The Jackson Southernaires, Rev. James Cleveland, Gospel Keynotes, Mighty Clouds of Joy, Dorothy Love Coates and The Gospel Harmonettes, Shirley Caesar, and Sam Cooke resonated throughout my house as I grew up. It was always present. You could not escape it. NEW MARVIN SAPP ALBUM SUBSTANCE AVAILABLE FOR PRE-ORDER “All In Your Hands” and “You Kept Me”Available with Pre-Order Copy or Click the link in my bio https://t.co/7Xkch7vtZI pic.twitter.com/NVMQw9Kegc— Marvin L. Sapp (@marvinsapp) May 25, 2022 That generation of gospel music gave way to individuals like Sapp, Edwin and Walter Hawkins, Yolanda Adams, Kirk Franklin, Andre Crouch, The Winans, Donald Lawrence, Fred Hammond and Commissioned, and John P. Kee and The New Life Community Choir. Today’s gospel music has shifted to a more Hosanna sound that features more praise and worship. Sapp and Cobbs Leonard are both throwbacks to an era of gospel music that this writer grew up with whereas the more contemporary sounds of William McDowell and Tye Tribbett are ushering this tradition into the future. The genre of gospel music may have shifted, but the tie-in to Black History Month is one of the same, said Sapp. “Gospel music is Black history,” Sapp remarked. “That’s just fact. You know, even when you go back to the time, you know, of individuals in slavery. The songs that they sung, from Harriet Tubman until now, it was a call. There was a response. It was a message of hope and help. And I think that, you know, gospel music still is that. It’s the good news of Jesus Christ, but it’s also a message of help. It’s also a message of hope that says that no matter how difficult or challenging life may seem to be, that there is a way out. And that way out may not always be physical, but it’s definitely spiritual.” Bishop Marvin Sapp is the pastor of The Chosen Vessel Church in Fort Worth, Texas. Top Image Photo Caption: Grammy Award-Winning Recording Artist and Pastor, Marvin Sapp speaks during the Global United Fellowship Press Conference at the Omni Hotel and Resort on July 7, 2015 in Jacksonville, Florida. Established in 2013 under the leadership of Bishop Neil C.
