Colosseum Underground & Arena Tour

The Colosseum is Rome's most distinctive landmark and a must-see for every travel or ancient history aficionado. The Flavian Amphitheater (the nick-name Colosseum came much later) was built on Emperor Vespasian's whim between 70 and 80 AD.

Vespasian restored the land that had once been Nero's "Golden House" to the Roman people. The neighboring large bronze statue of Nero was changed into a sun god, in addition to giving the land to the populace. The moniker Colosseum is thought to be derived from the statue's 'colossal' size. 

A modern-day football pitch could easily fit within this old sports facility. Nearly four centuries of bloodsport and 42 Roman Emperors were observed on the Colosseum Arena floor. The Colosseum hosted gladiatorial contests and public shows including animal hunts, simulated sea warfare, re-enactments of popular battles, executions, and tragedies.

Emperor Domitian, Vespasian's son, made significant alterations to the colosseum basement. Domitian ordered the construction of the Hypogeum, a complex system of rooms and tunnels running under the arena floor. Gladiators, wild animals, and landscapes were all raised to the arena floor from the underground by the use of elevators that were added later, and Huge, movable platforms allowed animals to walk up to the arena to face the fighters.

While the Colosseum's audience was engrossed in the horrific events transpiring in the arena, the Colosseum underground was a hive of activity. Laborers worked tirelessly whether it was sweltering summer or frigid and damp winter. The dungeons were dark, with just smoky oil lanterns for illumination and deafeningly loud, with machinery, people shouting, animals growling, and loud signals issued by horns or drums to coordinate the intricate series of duties being performed.

If you're planning a tour of the Colosseum, we highly recommend taking one that includes a visit to the Colosseum's underground. You can also visit the Colosseum at night if you don't want to attend during the day and want to avoid the throng of visitors. If you do decide to visit the Colosseum at night, don't expect to see it in complete darkness because of the special illumination and explanations provided by a tour guide, so that you won't miss any important details. A night visit will also provide a unique perspective and ambiance. The Colosseum appears even more imposing against the backdrop of a starry night sky.
