How often does everyone in Danny Phantom get ghostly powers/possessed/etc.?
Entire town - Brought into Ghost Zone, those of voting age possessed by Vlad for election, controlled by Undergrowth, controlled by Nocturne, mind controlled by Ember (adults in the cruise, kids in her debut), Reality Gauntlet timeline reboot, Pandora's Box debacle, all men vanished by Kitty
Entire High School - Above things, Ghost sickness, Possessed by Walker & co, Brought into alternate dimension in King Tuck, Desiree shenanigans, Spectra feeding off them, at least a third have been hit with some kind of ecto-weaponry
Danny - Above things excepting Undergrowth and the Kitty debacle, possessed by Poindexter, grew up around ectoplasm, controlled by Freakshow, split in half, spends enough time in GZ that he's mapping it out, portal accident x3 as well as additional accident in GZ, too much other stuff to list
Tucker - Possessed by Danny multiple times, Everything that happened to the town and school, Ecto-acne, possessed by cursed magical artifact, temporarily half-ghost, reincarnation of a Pharaoh, has at least once eaten meat that was possessed by Lunch Lady, been to GZ multiple times, traveled through time multiple times
Sam - possessed by Undergrowth as his second-in-command, everything that happened to town and school except being controlled by Ember, turned into a dragon, Ecto-acne, pulled into GZ by Dorathea, spends time in GZ, Traveled through time multiple times
Jazz - Everything that happened to town and school, Grew up around ectoplasm, possessed by Danny at least once? ecto-nanobots in her bloodstream
Maddie - Everything that happened to town, Spends frequent time around ectoplasm, leaves ecto in fridge where it effects the food
Jack -Everything that happened to town, Spends frequent time around ectoplasm, has likely eaten ecto-contaminated food, possessed by Danny and Vlad multiple times
Valerie - Everything that happened to town and school, has ecto-powered suit now bonded with her body, pulled into GZ by Skulker
Paulina - Everything that happened to town and school, possessed by Kitty, turned into a dragon
Dash - Everything that happened to town and school, possessed by Danny
Kwan - Everything that happened to town and school, possessed by Danny
What I'm getting at here, is that a large portion of the population have been possessed or controlled by ghosts in some capacity and thus should have residual ecto in their systems making them liminal.

It was very late at night. The moon up above in the dark sky casting its silvery glow over the calm surface of the water – making everything that lingered underneath appear far more mysterious and dangerous than they actually were. The depths concealed many mysteries. Humankind had barely scratched the surface when it came to what existed underneath but rather than exploring and learning of all things nature had provide them with… they chose to destroy it. To pollute the once perfectly blue and clear waters with their oils, their plastic and trash – their radioactive components. It was so criminal to see what was once beautiful walls of colorful corals dry up and crack until they were lifeless. To see all those colored fish schools that swam together move away or simply die out because their sustenance had been destroyed. How could humans do something so CRUEL? Did they not understand what they were doing? How their actions would impact the very world they lived on? How many had died because of their hubris? And so Walter swam. He moved deeper, welcoming the darkness, the cold and the pressure of the world around him as he moved his tail side to side – his arms stretched in front of his face. It helped him focus. To leave the resentment and possible hate behind so that he could embrace that small sliver of hope that resided in his heart. Not all humans were monsters. Not all were determined in destroying the oceans. And once his fingertips touched the sea bed – algae and sand and rock – Walter swam back to the surface, feeling the difference in temperature on his scales, the pressure no longing threatening to crush his body like twigs. Warm, clean salt water flowed through the gills on his neck. There wasn’t contamination in that area. Not a single taste of trash or chemicals or other dangerous products. It…reminded him of home. Of a home long forgotten and abandoned. Walter looked up – the silvery light of the moon barely breaking the surface, specs of light dancing before his eyes as he allowed his body to finally stop and feel the movement of the currents. Left and right. Left and right. The siren closed his eyes, his scaled arms wrapping around his bare torso – now much lighter than the usual skin tone with several dark blue scales adorning his body in intricate patterns. It was time to go up. Time to return to land now that he had a moment for himself back home. There was no sounds there. Not even those belonging to the occasional fishing boat that would go on an excursion. Not even the creaking of dead wood and loud shouts from men urging others to keep it up. There was no vibration belonging to the mechanical engines that propelled the boats ahead. Just – SILENCE. Complete, absolute, all-encompassing… SILENCE.

Fathering a Phantom
Tucker looks into the Forgotten Realms, the Lumanos make a startling discovery on Earth, and everyone meets up for once
Danny was impressed with his ability to get a full 8 hours of sleep, but that really was only because he didn’t have school of any kind to go to during the summer. He woke up at 11, Tucker already in his room and doing stars knew what on the tablet that Sam had gotten him as a gift, with the caveat that he not name this one. Needless to say, it was a hard fought battle for Tucker not to address the tablet by the name he had undoubtedly given it regardless, but he was managing so far. What he was doing on it in Danny’s chair, however, was a mystery almost as great as why the Observants went after Danny instead of Vlad.
Danny phased through his top blanket and floated into the air, stretching until the joints in his spine popped loudly, putting a cringe on Tucker’s face. “Dude, that noise is disgusting.”
“You stay in my room long enough for me to wake up, you suffer my wake up actions. Besides, its hardy the grossest sound you’ve ever encountered. Have you heard yourself with soup?” Danny laughed, grabbing up a blue and purple galaxy shirt with stars sprinkled over it and a cat’s face printed right over the heart and some shorts. “Lookin up Doomed cheats?”
“I should do that later,” Tucker said, nodding to himself while Danny floated upside down to look over his shoulder. “I’m actually looking into some D&D sourcebooks to find out what all we might sorta know about Toby. I was right, by the way, Aasimar are from this game.”
“Begs the question: which came first, the game or the world?” Danny grabbed his underclothes and saluted Tucker as he landed. “Be back when I’m clean.”
“I might be too old to hear you for conversation by then.” Tucker laughed and Danny focused on his pillow, spreading his energy around it. With a flick of his wrist, the pillow went flying and Tucker caught it with his face, flopping over with an “Oof! Hey, how’d you do that?”
“A guess, observation, and mad skill.” Danny gave Tucker finger guns and backed out of his room, heading to the bathroom. After a quick shower and brushing his teeth, Danny kicked his door open, making Tucker jump in his seat, whipping out his lipstick laser, and Danny cackled. “Nice reflexes, Tuck. Maybe you should work on your situational awareness.”
“I could say the same for you, Danny.” Jazz neatly dodged the backhand Danny sprang on her without thought, grinning down at him with a smugness that only siblings could achieve. “Here I thought you had supernatural senses.”
“I guess paying attention is important no matter how sensitive you are,” Tucker said with a snort. Danny rolled his eyes and let them glow, the green light enveloping his bedding as he telekinetically made his bed. “So, do you wanna try a game tournament over at Sam’s, get beaten at skateboarding at one of the skate parks, or look into the roots of your super hero style? I know we’re gonna do something cool today, but Sam picked yesterday and it’s your turn now.”
“Well, right now I wanna eat some food that isn’t contaminated by ectoplasm,” Danny said, turning to Jazz who offered a thumbs up.
“I finally convinced Mom to get a fridge for samples only put down in the lab, and finally convinced dad to use the right fridge for the right thing. Our food should be ecto-free.” Jazz stumbled a bit when Danny all but tackled her in a hug but she smiled and returned it all the same. “I know, I’m amazing.”
“What amazes me is the fact that your parents needed to be told to keep their dangerous chemicals in their dangerous laboratory. Aren’t they like, bleeding edge engineers and stuff?”
“Yeah, but everyone’s got their blind spot, Tuck. Our folks lack common sense, to make room for all the inventive genius.” Danny let go of Jazz to escape the ruffling of his hair and grabbed his bag from beside his desk. “I think I’ll go with asking Toby and Cole stuff, Tuck. It’d be a waste to not learn whatever I can from them while they’re here.”
“I suggest we put together a list of things to ask them, then.” Jazz pulled a notebook out from behind her back and Danny shook his head. “Oh, don’t give me that, you have a thermos clipped to your belt loop.”
“Yeah, cause I need that wherever I go, Jazz. But fine, let’s make a list, we can do that while we cook. C’mon Tuck.” Danny pulled Tucker up by his arm, ignoring his friend’s protests about research into the Forgotten Realms.
While they perfectly recognized that they needed to make connections and do some research into who could do what in order to help them manage providing Danny some mentorship, as well as his friends, the Lumanos also knew that they could get more information on the people on their little hit list by asking Danny, Tucker, and Sam. So, they decided that rather than making nuisances of themselves before they made any friends in the Infinite Realms, they should explore what the attached material realm was like. Toby planeshifted back to the park where he’d met the kids and Cole opened a Gate next to him. When Toby touched down upon the grass, though, he realized that he should’ve come in mortal form. His mortal flesh required that he cast Commune with Nature purposely, voluntarily. Ectoplasm, so attuned to channeling the spirit, did not.
Through the grass, Toby could feel not just the plants rooted together in the park but the trees on the other side of the planet, the heartbeats of every beast that crawled and swam and flew across the world. Toby was, in an instant, connected to the Earth’s biosphere, to its consciousness, and he could hear it screaming, could feel the pain that it felt. In a flash he was flesh and blood again, held up only by his husband’s arms, and vision blurred beyond comprehension with tears. He fell apart for a moment in Cole’s arms, trying to shake himself of the overwhelming presence of an entire planet’s ecosystem.
“Hey there little bird, we can go. We don’t have to stay here if you don’t want,” Cole was saying to him, rubbing his back and trying to pull him out of it. It warmed his heart to have Cole comforting him, but Toby cringed at the thought of just leaving this world behind.
“No. Thank you, love, gods I’m so lucky to have you.” Toby gave Cole a kiss and they stood up together, the druid shaking himself off all over and wiping the tears from his cheeks. “We can’t… I can’t leave this place, though. Not how it is now. Cole, the whole planet is crying.”
“I guess we’re saving this world too, huh? You’ve got a thing for being the hero, doncha?” Cole poked Toby’s cheek and he laughed, shaking his head.
“Yeah, I guess we do. Think we can convince Queen Persephone to let us bring the guys here? I know Valdan at least would jump at the chance to help upheave an entire global order.” Toby huffed a laugh and stood up properly, shaking himself off.
“Regardless, I’m certain we can get Valdan over here. If we want the others, we’ll have to have any semblance of manners though, and actually ask the Queen.” Cole shuddered, rubbing his shoulders. “I don’t like visiting her, she makes me feel like it’s a disappointment that I haven’t died and fallen under her domain yet. Not even in a malicious way, like she has a sweet home all prepared for me and it’s a shame I haven’t come to rest.”
Toby patted Cole on the shoulder and leaned up to kiss his forehead. “Don’t you worry about that, love. I’ll talk with her when we get to that. You can focus on other things.”
“Like teaching that kid you found how to change the weather?” Toby chuckled and shrugged.
“That, hunting down child fighting assholes, making cloud art, there’s so many options.”
Danny would deny that his love of space guided him to his decision about where they should meet up for this discussion, regardless of the teasing Jazz, Tucker, and Sam threw his way. Jazz drove them to the abandoned, somewhat demolished by missiles Observatory, since Danny couldn’t carry them without stretching his arms out in a way that had Tucker comparing him to Mister Fantastic. “Dude, I’m way better than Mr. Fantastic. I actually care about people, for one.”
“Ok, so you’re Monkey D Luffy, then?”
“Sam, please, I don’t eat that much.”
“Maybe you should, little brother, you’re rather undernourished. Have you considered actually trying Mom’s food?”
“The ecto-contaminated food?” Danny stared at her, eyes wide with horror. “The shit Dad puts in the prototype microwave ‘improvement’ that reanimates?”
“You are ecto-contaminated, Danny, and I’m wondering if you need to ingest ectoplasm along with regular food.” Danny instinctively looked around them, worried about being overheard even inside of the car while they drove out to effectively the middle of nowhere by now. “With all the activity in your day to day life, you shouldn’t be so skinny.”
“Even my own sister is calling me scrawny now, I simply cannot escape Tetslaff’s judgement.” Danny let invisibility slowly roll over him from head to toe and Sam and Tucker laughed their heads off while Jazz smiled and shook her head. “Jazz, almost all of the exercise I get is in ghost form, and I don’t think I have cells in that form, let alone muscles that can be built up and shit.”
“Can’t you just make your skin invisible and then we could test that hypothesis?”
Tucker gagged at the suggestion and pointed his PDA’s stylus at Sam. “That’s absolutely disgusting, why would you even say that? Did you get high before this happened or are we simply being cursed with vile visions by a temperamental witch?”
“I’m not a witch, Tucker,” Sam said, rolling her eyes. “If Danny’s right then we won’t see anything gross, and if he’s wrong then you can look away and I’ll confirm or deny. How’s that you big baby?”
“Nosocomephobia doesn’t make Tucker anymore of a baby than your love of anime makes you some basement dwelling weeaboo, Sam.” Sam narrowed her eyes and Jazz’s smile grew just a bit. “I have friends, you have friends, people talk. Really, it’s nothing to be ashamed of, anime is growing more popular in mainstream western media these days.”
“Please don’t remind me, it’s less cool if it’s mainstream.”
“Why Sam,” Danny gasped, a hand on his chest. “Doesn’t that mean you’re letting the crowd tell you what is or isn’t cool, based on what they do or don’t like? That doesn’t sounds very independent of other people’s opinions to me.”
“That’s true,” Tucker said, arm up and ready to block the swat from Sam. “You did only seem to hate Ember’s music because she was popular, Sam. Her music is pretty amazing with or without the hypnotism planted in.”
“I’m pretty sure Remember by Ember was made a flop in my mind because I had to listen to you screeching it to the tune of three cats fighting to the death. Oh wait, that was your attempt at singing.”
“Move over, Spectra, we’ve got someone with a sword in her mouth already,” Danny said, whistling at the sick burn.
Tucker clutched his chest and slumped against the car door. “What a blow struck by a dear friend. How ever shall I survive?”
“Maybe you’ll reincarnate again and this time you’ll be responsible with the scepter. It’s a good thing you put it away in the museum.”
“Right, totally, I put it back in the museum.” The car was quiet for a moment while Tucker tapped away at his PDA, suddenly very interested in something on his screen.
“So what happened with this scepter that Tucker put back?”
Sam stared hard at Tucker for a long moment before turning her attention to Jazz. “Ah, well, it turns out that Tucker is the reincarnation of the Pharoah Duul Amon, who was also a sorcerer. The scepter allowed Tucker to do some absolutely bonkers shit, like drag the entire class into a pocket dimension modelled off of ancient Egypt, as well as wipe all of their memories of the event.”
“But not the emotions that came with the memories – Tucker, you did put that thing back in the museum, right?”
“It’s mine, so I don’t see why a museum should have it. Neither does it, apparently, cause it just reappeared in my room one day surrounded by sand that was a pain in the ass to clean up. It can’t exactly do all that stuff that it did before, like animating pictures and stuff. I think making and undoing a pocket dimension drained the charge on it.”
Danny, returning to visibility, sighed and twisted his head around to look at Tucker in the seat behind Jazz without moving his torso an inch. “Leave it to you to drain the battery on a magical scepter within a day of getting it.”
“I’m gonna need you to put your head right the fuck back where it was just now or I’m gonna have to kick it in place.” Danny stuck his tongue out and turned the rest of himself to fit with his head. “Close enough. And excuse you, I’ve been amazing with the batteries on all my girls. I’ve simply never built a whole dimension with my thoughts before.”
“Ok, this all has fascinating implications that I’d love to get into later if you’ll let me,” Jazz said, slowing down the car. “We are, however, here, and I think we should focus up a bit.”
“Of fucking course Tucker has something cool like a magical pre-incarnation who he inherits a magical scepter from, because fuck me and my goth aesthetic, the normal techie gets the magic he probably doesn’t even want.” Sam’s grumbling was, to the average person, practically unintelligible. To Danny, who had preternatural hearing, it was practically in his ear even as he phased out of the car and went ghost above it.
“Maybe these guys can show you how to make your own magic thing, Sam. After all, Duul Amon put together his scepter and even Freakshow probably made his.”
“I’d much rather Freakshow wasn’t the one who made that staff, actually, cause if he did then can’t he do it again?” They all shuddered, and Tucker put away his PDA while Danny phased into the building. “Yeah, sorry for bringing that up.”
“No, that’s actually an important thing to consider, Tucker. We’ll come back to that.” Jazz pulled out her phone, typing away rapidly while the doors to the Observatory slid open. “Ok, now to get down to business with this angel of yours.”
The team walked inside, heading into the room with the actual telescope itself, and Tucker pulled out the feather he’d been gifted, snapping it in two. The air buzzed with energy and mist poured from Danny’s mouth like a fountain was turned on. A flash filled the room with an explosive BOOM and no less than 10 feet away stood Toby, with a blue skinned man floating by his side, an arm twice the size of Dash’s wrapped around the druid’s shoulders with a small tornado for a tail. Echoing across the entire observatory was the man’s deep voice, kaleidoscopic eyes locked on all three of them at once somehow, “Boo.”

For a broken skin, a broken skin is a burning skin problem.
Thus, we undoubtedly prefer to adopt a comprehensive strategy
To understand the issue that is at its root.
What's more, it is not necessarily that such items Topical medications, serums and lotions will not work.
However, the problems that appear on our skin are generally internal.
Moreover, likewise to really sweeten the deal,These drinks will likewise help in cases that Perhaps we all looked from time to time.Or on the other hand constantly.
how about we ensure we know how the demonstration of drinking is connected to more clear skin on an entirety.  So going directly to the mystery of genuinely clear skin. So going directly to the mystery of really clear skin.
You probably won't know this, be that as it may, a great deal of it is
about what's happening in your liver.
What's more, we've referenced that an imbalanced gut can prompt breakouts.
Be that as it may, the development of poisons in the liver can likewise show a great deal of skin issues, too. This isn't showing that we need.
What's more, you can think about the liver as sort of like a fringe watch or a line of safeguard.
What's more, whenever you eat or drink anything, it needs to experience and get affirmed by the liver.
before it enters our circulation system or then again goes through
different territories of the bodies and different organs.
So the great stuff stay inside furthermore, gets diverted to parts of the body that need it. And afterward the awful stuff like poisons substantial metals and things like those are sent through the fast track for discharge.
What's more, every day, the liver is performing around 500 distinct
errands like delivering bile to separate the fats in the nourishments that we eat and likewise making specific kinds of proteins for our blood plasma.
Furthermore, one of the most significant ones is it serves to normally detoxify our bodies.
So with all that being stated, if your eating regimen isn't the best - For instance, in case we're eating a great deal of handled sugars, in case we're eating a great deal of pan fried nourishments that are aggravating our bodies.
what's more, anything in the domain of being handled?
what's going on is that we're topping and stopping up off our poor livers with a great deal of crude garbage that is low or nearly non-existent in supplements that our skin and body truly need.
So then what occurs?
Since there's this abundance development of awful stuff going on in the liver, it will go into alarm mode, as we as a whole would, furthermore, put forth an attempt to cleanse the awful stuff somewhere else.
Furthermore, where may that be?
That's right! It's our skin!
Our skin languishes over all the terrible choices that we decide to make throughout everyday life.
You can sort of envision it like, you know, an air channel that is simply being loaded up with residue and it's rarely perfect.
So after some time, this air channel that is really expected to clear out the air for you is really letting out air that is more awful for you and making significantly more issues.
It will show up conceivably as the dried harsh patches, irritated
orredness. And afterward in certain zones skin break out and cystic skin break out.
In general, it's dull, droopy, and just not dynamic and young. Also, not simply that!
It can without much of a stretch lead to different issues like hormonal lopsided characteristics, which seriously sway, once more, the skin.
Here are some skin friendly drinks ..
Beginning basic and simple:
including a crush of lemon into your morning glass of water, with apple juice vinegar.
So you might be amazed at "what I profited by the bitter water for me"?
at the point when you ingest nutrient C,it assists with boosting your invulnerable framework, with the goal that it can safeguard itself against the terrible microorganisms, infections, and free radicals that are inside us and possibly in our gut.
What's more, one of the most notable elements of nutrient C is the job in creation of collagen, which is the protein that gives us that fun, young shine to the skin. And as we age, we will start to lose these collagen and elastin levels.
So by drinking some lemon with your water, it's the ideal method to portion up on this decency in the first part of the day Or whenever truly.
1-Apple juice vinegar:
the advantages of apple juice vinegar, in case you haven't heard starting at now.
It's looong been known for its medical advantages. you realize how valuable it can truly be .
So the enchantment in apple juice vinegar all lies in something many refer to as acidic corrosive. What's more, acidic corrosive enables our bodies to retain and furthermore transport the minerals that we get from our nourishments and beverages.
Since once in a while we eat nourishments that may be high in minerals and supplements, yet, not those supplements can be consumed by the body.
In this way, everything has to do with supplement ingestion.
It likewise serves to rebalance the pH level of our stomach. Furthermore, fun certainty! And furthermore as we get more established, our bodies will get antacid after some time.
when this occurs, your adrenals begin losing acids through our pee.
So what acidic corrosive does?
Since it's an acid,it renews, fundamentally, your life source to rebalance the pH level to where it ought to be.
with the goal that everything that we eat and drink can be really consumed by the body.
So for the mornings, despite the fact that it may taste sort of out of
control furthermore, smell sort of funky,I exceptionally strongly suggest this!
And afterward you can follow with your morning meal or whatever other beverages that you may need to have. And simply recall!
Espresso simply after your first feast. You can drink this with cold or hot [water].But warm [water], I find, is great Especially toward the beginning of the day 'cause it only sort of gets everything going.
And as with anything, consistency of drinking this over time with the regulation of your body can definitely help with your breakout.
2-the turmeric golden latte:
Next most loved beverage is the turmeric brilliant latte!
I consider this beverage my fluid daylight.
Also, there are a large number of reasons, a huge number of studies, and a great many years to back up the reasons whyturmeric is soooo helpful for your skin and body and just being in general.
Furthermore, the primary reasons are that turmeric is exceptionally
powerful in a compound called curcumin or curcuminoid.
Furthermore, this is an amazing calming compound! Furthermore, it assists with shielding our cells from oxidative harm.
Furthermore, an examination indicated that in 12 weeks in the wake of expending about 4.5 grams of turmeric, the members experienced around 88% diminished side effects in psoriasis.
So you can simply envision the impacts it has on skin break out.
Essentially, nipping it at the bud so it doesn't appear in any case!
we can utilize turmeric powder [and] a smidgen of cinnamon powder.
we can even cut up little bits of ginger and afterward blend that in a pot in with a tad of oat milk.
You can even include, you know, honey or maple syrup Ensure that is all decent and hot and afterward empty it into your cup.
What's more, the cool thing is you can really make a major cluster of this, combine all the flavors truly well, and afterward empty it into a holder.
what's more, store it in the refrigerator for around five days.
You can simply go in there, top off, have it hot [or] have it cold.
3-dandelion root:
dandelion root is enormously useful with the liver's detoxification
procedure.
What's more, a great deal of the discussions that we see and hear now is that it can truly help with skin inflammation.
In any case, why?
So we found that a great deal of skin break out cases come from interior uneven characters. Dandelion root assists with detoxifying the blood, which along these lines assists with the liver.
Another extraordinary advantage of dandelion root is that it increments glutathione levels in your body, which is a cancer
prevention agent. Furthermore, it works, once more, to detoxify the blood.
Furthermore, you may have known about glutathione previously..
Furthermore, that is on the grounds that it's likewise joined in a ton of healthy skin items, too.
Furthermore's, fascinating that with regards to an examination that was led in 2013, it was discovered that individuals that accomplished skin inflammation had around 20% less glutathione levels in their skin versus the individuals with more clear skin.
It additionally assists with the adrenal organs. In such a case that your adrenals are exhausted, that prompts very destructive awkward nature in your body. Like when you're exhausted and drowsy.
In case you're discouraged and not in a decent mental state of mind or on the other hand even in a decent physical state. The entirety of this truly has to do with your adrenals.
And your adrenals are what releases the stress hormone known as cortisol that leads to the fight-or-flight responses. And that, in turn, creates inflammation in the body, which then creates acne.
4-Matcha:
Matcha is one of those like, goodness my god, simply grand fixings that are not terrible, but not great either powerful thus amazing in cancer prevention agents.
Matcha is unique in relation to green tea since green tea is somewhat the shriveled leaf.
And afterward you simply blend the leaf in water and drink the tea, isn't that so?
In any case, matcha is crushed, regularly exceptionally excellent, green tea leaves.
So you're really ingesting the whole thing.
So hence, it has just about multiple times more cell reinforcements
contrasted with simply your green tea.
The most ideal way is simply to have your matcha and water and drink that as it stands.
Furthermore, a cancer prevention agent that is explicit to matcha is the EGCG.
5-spearmint:
by Looking at others and their experiences,it looked just as it truly
helped quiet down the redness that is related with skin inflammation or skin inflammation sores.
So the advantages of spearmint is that it is an enemy of androgenic
[ingredient] furthermore, is likewise loaded with cancer prevention agent properties.
Some say that it's really helpful for hormonal acne.Because another thing to note is that acne can be a product of excess testosterone and androgen, which is the male sex hormone.
So what the tea does is it comes in, and it can help to stimulate the
female sex hormone, which is estrogen, to reduce breakouts.
So if you want to try this one, you know, all you have to do is boil a cup of water.
I would likewise prescribe you attempt it during the stage paving the way to your menstrual cycle [menstruation] since there have been a few articles in certain examinations that said it can mitigate the development of hormonal skin inflammation during those occasions.
Furthermore, on the off chance that you are pregnant, they likewise state that spearmint tea shouldn't be expended.
So that's just something to keep in mind.
You can likewise make it a frosted form by bubbling perhaps a few sachets and afterward simply placing some ice in it, too.
your body truly benefits.
You may feel re-invigorated after some time, throughout a month.
What's more, truly stripping back and refining your eating regimen

How a Guy From a Montana Trailer Park Overturned 150 Years of Biology
We here at the lichenloglichenblog encourage you to read this.
Biology textbooks tell us that lichens are alliances between two organisms—a fungus and an alga. They are wrong.
ED YONG, JUL 21, 2016 SCIENCE
In 1995, if you had told Toby Spribille that he’d eventually overthrow a scientific idea that’s been the stuff of textbooks for 150 years, he would have laughed at you. Back then, his life seemed constrained to a very different path. He was raised in a Montana trailer park, and home-schooled by what he now describes as a “fundamentalist cult.” At a young age, he fell in love with science, but had no way of feeding that love. He longed to break away from his roots and get a proper education.
At 19, he got a job at a local forestry service. Within a few years, he had earned enough to leave home. His meager savings and non-existent grades meant that no American university would take him, so Spribille looked to Europe.
Thanks to his family background, he could speak German, and he had heard that many universities there charged no tuition fees. His missing qualifications were still a problem, but one that the University of Gottingen decided to overlook. “They said that under exceptional circumstances, they could enroll a few people every year without transcripts,” says Spribille. “That was the bottleneck of my life.”
Throughout his undergraduate and postgraduate work, Spribille became an expert on the organisms that had grabbed his attention during his time in the Montana forests—lichens.
You’ve seen lichens before, but unlike Spribille, you may have ignored them. They grow on logs, cling to bark, smother stones. At first glance, they look messy and undeserving of attention. On closer inspection, they are astonishingly beautiful. They can look like flecks of peeling paint, or coralline branches, or dustings of powder, or lettuce-like fronds, or wriggling worms, or cups that a pixie might drink from. They’re also extremely tough. They grow in the most inhospitable parts of the planet, where no plant or animal can survive.
Lichens have an important place in biology. In the 1860s, scientists thought that they were plants. But in 1868, a Swiss botanist named Simon Schwendener revealed that they’re composite organisms, consisting of fungi that live in partnership with microscopic algae. This “dual hypothesis” was met with indignation: it went against the impetus to put living things in clear and discrete buckets. The backlash only collapsed when Schwendener and others, with good microscopes and careful hands, managed to tease the two partners apart.
Schwendener wrongly thought that the fungus had “enslaved” the alga, but others showed that the two cooperate. The alga uses sunlight to make nutrients for the fungus, while the fungus provides minerals, water, and shelter. This kind of mutually beneficial relationship was unheard of, and required a new word. Two Germans, Albert Frank and Anton de Bary, provided the perfect one—symbiosis, from the Greek for ‘together’ and ‘living’.
“That was the eureka moment. That’s when I leaned back in my chair.”
When we think about the microbes that influence the health of humans and other animals, the algae that provide coral reefs with energy, the mitochondria that power our cells, the gut bacteria that allow cows to digest their food, or the probiotic products that line supermarket shelves—all of that can be traced to the birth of the symbiosis as a concept. And symbiosis, in turn, began with lichens.
In the 150 years since Schwendener, biologists have tried in vain to grow lichens in laboratories. Whenever they artificially united the fungus and the alga, the two partners would never fully recreate their natural structures. It was as if something was missing—and Spribille might have discovered it.
He has shown that largest and most species-rich group of lichens are not alliances between two organisms, as every scientist since Schwendener has claimed. Instead, they’re alliances between three. All this time, a second type of fungus has been hiding in plain view.
“There’s been over 140 years of microscopy,” says Spribille. “The idea that there’s something so fundamental that people have been missing is stunning.”
The path to this discovery began in 2011, when Spribille, now armed with a doctorate, returned to Montana. He joined the lab of symbiosis specialist John McCutcheon, who convinced him to supplement his formidable natural history skills with some know-how in modern genetics.
The duo started studying two local lichens that are common in local forests and hang from branches like unruly wigs. One is yellow because it makes a strong poison called vulpinic acid; the other lacks this toxin and is dark brown. They clearly look different, and had been classified as separate species for almost a century. But recent studies had suggested that they’re actually the same fungus, partnered with the same alga. So why are they different?
To find out, Spribille analyzed which genes the two lichens were activating. He found no differences. Then, he realized that he was searching too narrowly. Lichenologists all thought that the fungi in the partnership belonged to a group called the ascomycetes—so Spribille had only searched for ascomycete genes. Almost on a whim, he broadened his search to the entire fungal kingdom, and found something bizarre. A lot of the genes that were activated in the lichens belonged to a fungus from an entirely different group—the basidiomycetes. “That didn’t look right,” says McCutcheon. “It took a lot of time to figure out.”
At first, the duo figured that a basidiomycete fungus was growing on the lichens. Perhaps it was just a contaminant, a speck of microbial fluff that had landed on the specimens. Or it might have been a pathogen, a fungus that was infecting the lichens and causing disease. It might simply have been a false alarm. (Such things happen: genetic algorithms have misidentified plague bacteria on the New York subway, platypuses in Virginia tomato fields, and seals in Vietnamese forests.)
But when Spribille removed all the basidiomycete genes from his data, everything that related to the presence of vulpinic acid also disappeared. “That was the eureka moment,” he says. “That’s when I leaned back in my chair.” That’s when he began to suspect that the basidiomycete was actually part of the lichens—present in both types, but especially abundant in the yellow toxic one.
“Toby took huge risks for many years. And he changed the field.”
And not just in these two types, either. Throughout his career, Spribille had collected some 45,000 samples of lichens. He began screening these, from many different lineages and continents. And in almost all the macrolichens—the world’s most species-rich group—he found the genes of basidiomycete fungi. They were everywhere. Now, he needed to see them with his own eyes.
Down a microscope, a lichen looks like a loaf of ciabatta: it has a stiff, dense crust surrounding a spongy, loose interior. The alga is embedded in the thick crust. The familiar ascomycete fungus is there too, but it branches inwards, creating the spongy interior. And the basidiomycetes? They’re in the outermost part of the crust, surrounding the other two partners. “They’re everywhere in that outer layer,” says Spribille.
Despite their seemingly obvious location, it took around five years to find them. They’re embedded in a matrix of sugars, as if someone had plastered over them. To see them, Spribille bought laundry detergent from Wal-Mart and used it to very carefully strip that matrix away.
And even when the basidiomycetes were exposed, they weren’t easy to identify. They look exactly like a cross-section from one of the ascomycete branches. Unless you know what you’re looking for, there’s no reason why you’d think there are two fungi there, rather than one—which is why no one realised for 150 years. Spribille only worked out what was happening by labeling each of the three partners with different fluorescent molecules, which glowed red, green, and blue respectively. Only then did the trinity become clear.
“The findings overthrow the two-organism paradigm,” says Sarah Watkinson from the University of Oxford. “Textbook definitions of lichens may have to be revised.”
“It makes lichens all the more remarkable,” adds Nick Talbot from the University of Exeter. “We now see that they require two different kinds of fungi and an algal species. If the right combination meet together on a rock or twig, then a lichen will form, and this will result in the large and complex plant-like organisms that we see on trees and rocks very commonly.  The mechanism by which this symbiotic association occurs is completely unknown and remains a real mystery.”
Based on the locations of the two fungi, it’s possible that the basidiomycete influences the growth of the other fungus, inducing it to create the lichen’s stiff crust. Perhaps by using all three partners, lichenologists will finally be able to grow these organisms in the lab.
In the Montana lichens that Spribille studied, the basidiomycete obviously goes hand-in-hand with vulpinic acid. But is it eating the acid, manufacturing it, or unlocking the ability to make it in the other fungus? If it’s the latter, “the implications go beyond lichenology,” says Watkinson. Lichens are alluring targets for ‘bioprospectors’, who scour nature for substances that might be medically useful to us. And new basidiomycetes are part of an entirely new group, separated from their closest known relatives by 200 million years ago. All kinds of beneficial chemicals might lie within their cells.
“But really, we don’t know what they do,” says McCutcheon. “And given their existence, we don’t really know what the ascomycetes do, either.” Everything that’s been attributed to them might actually be due to the other fungus. Many of the fundamentals of lichenology will need to be checked, and perhaps re-written. “Toby took huge risks for many years,” says McCutcheon. “And he changed the field.”
But he didn’t work alone, Watkinson notes. His discovery wouldn’t have been possible without the entire team, who combined their individual expertise in natural history, genomics, microscopy, and more. That’s a theme that resonates throughout the history of symbiosis research—it takes an alliance of researchers to uncover nature’s most intimate partnerships.

Book Club Picks - Spring 2018
My book club is on hiatus at the moment so I've just been reliving the HP series via audiobook lately, but that doesn't mean I'm not continually adding to my list of books that I want to read with my two buddies once we get back going again. I thought I'd share my last 10 additions to the list with you all. Just FYI, the descriptions below are from GoodReads.
Annhilation  by Jeff Vandermeer: Area X has been cut off from the rest of the continent for decades. Nature has reclaimed the last vestiges of human civilization. The first expedition returned with reports of a pristine, Edenic landscape; all the members of the second expedition committed suicide; the third expedition died in a hail of gunfire as its members turned on one another; the members of the eleventh expedition returned as shadows of their former selves, and within months of their return, all had died of aggressive cancer. This is the twelfth expedition. Their group is made up of four women: an anthropologist; a surveyor; a psychologist, the de facto leader; and our narrator, a biologist. Their mission is to map the terrain and collect specimens; to record all their observations, scientific and otherwise, of their surroundings and of one another; and, above all, to avoid being contaminated by Area X itself. They arrive expecting the unexpected, and Area X delivers—they discover a massive topographic anomaly and life forms that surpass understanding—but it’s the surprises that came across the border with them, and the secrets the expedition members are keeping from one another, that change everything.
The Belles by Dhonielle Clayton: Camellia Beauregard is a Belle. In the opulent world of Orléans, Belles are revered, for they control Beauty, and Beauty is a commodity coveted above all else. In Orléans, the people are born gray, they are born damned, and only with the help of a Belle and her talents can they transform and be made beautiful. But it’s not enough for Camellia to be just a Belle. She wants to be the favorite—the Belle chosen by the Queen of Orléans to live in the royal palace, to tend to the royal family and their court, to be recognized as the most talented Belle in the land. But once Camellia and her Belle sisters arrive at court, it becomes clear that being the favorite is not everything she always dreamed it would be. Behind the gilded palace walls live dark secrets, and Camellia soon learns that the very essence of her existence is a lie—that her powers are far greater, and could be more dangerous, than she ever imagined. And when the queen asks Camellia to risk her own life and help the ailing princess by using Belle powers in unintended ways, Camellia now faces an impossible decision.  With the future of Orléans and its people at stake, Camellia must decide—save herself and her sisters and the way of the Belles—or resuscitate the princess, risk her own life, and change the ways of her world forever.
The Red Sister by Mark Lawrence: At the Convent of Sweet Mercy young girls are raised to be killers. In a few the old bloods show, gifting talents rarely seen since the tribes beached their ships on Abeth. Sweet Mercy hones its novices’ skills to deadly effect: it takes ten years to educate a Red Sister in the ways of blade and fist. But even the mistresses of sword and shadow don’t truly understand what they have purchased when Nona Grey is brought to their halls as a bloodstained child of eight, falsely accused of murder: guilty of worse. Stolen from the shadow of the noose, Nona is sought by powerful enemies, and for good reason. Despite the security and isolation of the convent her secret and violent past will find her out. Beneath a dying sun that shines upon a crumbling empire, Nona Grey must come to terms with her demons and learn to become a deadly assassin if she is to survive.
Renegades by Marissa Meyer: The Renegades are a syndicate of prodigies — humans with extraordinary abilities — who emerged from the ruins of a crumbled society and established peace and order where chaos reigned. As champions of justice, they remain a symbol of hope and courage to everyone... except the villains they once overthrew. Nova has a reason to hate the Renegades, and she is on a mission for vengeance. As she gets closer to her target, she meets Adrian, a Renegade boy who believes in justice — and in Nova. But Nova's allegiance is to a villain who has the power to end them both
War Cross by Marie Lu: For the millions who log in every day, Warcross isn’t just a game—it’s a way of life. The obsession started ten years ago and its fan base now spans the globe, some eager to escape from reality and others hoping to make a profit. Struggling to make ends meet, teenage hacker Emika Chen works as a bounty hunter, tracking down players who bet on the game illegally. But the bounty hunting world is a competitive one, and survival has not been easy. Needing to make some quick cash, Emika takes a risk and hacks into the opening game of the international Warcross Championships—only to accidentally glitch herself into the action and become an overnight sensation. Convinced she’s going to be arrested, Emika is shocked when instead she gets a call from the game’s creator, the elusive young billionaire Hideo Tanaka, with an irresistible offer. He needs a spy on the inside of this year’s tournament in order to uncover a security problem . . . and he wants Emika for the job. With no time to lose, Emika’s whisked off to Tokyo and thrust into a world of fame and fortune that she’s only dreamed of. But soon her investigation uncovers a sinister plot, with major consequences for the entire Warcross empire.
The Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America's Shining Women by Kate Moore: The incredible true story of the women who fought America's Undark danger. The Curies' newly discovered element of radium makes gleaming headlines across the nation as the fresh face of beauty, and wonder drug of the medical community. From body lotion to tonic water, the popular new element shines bright in the otherwise dark years of the First World War. Meanwhile, hundreds of girls toil amidst the glowing dust of the radium-dial factories. The glittering chemical covers their bodies from head to toe; they light up the night like industrious fireflies. With such a coveted job, these "shining girls" are the luckiest alive — until they begin to fall mysteriously ill. But the factories that once offered golden opportunities are now ignoring all claims of the gruesome side effects, and the women's cries of corruption. And as the fatal poison of the radium takes hold, the brave shining girls find themselves embroiled in one of the biggest scandals of America's early 20th century, and in a groundbreaking battle for workers' rights that will echo for centuries to come. Written with a sparkling voice and breakneck pace, The Radium Girls fully illuminates the inspiring young women exposed to the "wonder" substance of radium, and their awe-inspiring strength in the face of almost impossible circumstances. Their courage and tenacity led to life-changing regulations, research into nuclear bombing, and ultimately saved hundreds of thousands of lives.
Wicked Wonders by Ellen Klages: Inside of these critically-acclaimed tales are memorable characters who are smart, subversive, and singular. A rebellious child identifies with wicked Maleficent instead of Sleeping Beauty. Best friends Anna and Corry share a last melancholy morning before emigration to another planet. A prep-school girl requires more than mere luck to win at dice with a faerie. Ladies who lunch keeping dividing that one last bite of dessert in the paradox of female politeness.  Whether on a habitat on Mars or in a boardinghouse in London, discover Ellen Klages' wicked, wondrous adventures full of brazenness, wit, empathy, and courage.
Tess of the Road by Rachel Hartman: In the medieval kingdom of Goredd, women are expected to be ladies, men are their protectors, and dragons get to be whomever they want. Tess, stubbornly, is a troublemaker. You can't make a scene at your sister's wedding and break a relative's nose with one punch (no matter how pompous he is) and not suffer the consequences. As her family plans to send her to a nunnery, Tess yanks on her boots and sets out on a journey across the Southlands, alone and pretending to be a boy. Where Tess is headed is a mystery, even to her. So when she runs into an old friend, it's a stroke of luck. This friend is a quigutl--a subspecies of dragon--who gives her both a purpose and protection on the road. But Tess is guarding a troubling secret. Her tumultuous past is a heavy burden to carry, and the memories she's tried to forget threaten to expose her to the world in more ways than one.
Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng: In Shaker Heights, a placid, progressive suburb of Cleveland, everything is meticulously planned – from the layout of the winding roads, to the colours of the houses, to the successful lives its residents will go on to lead. And no one embodies this spirit more than Elena Richardson, whose guiding principle is playing by the rules. Enter Mia Warren – an enigmatic artist and single mother – who arrives in this idyllic bubble with her teenage daughter Pearl, and rents a house from the Richardsons. Soon Mia and Pearl become more than just tenants: all four Richardson children are drawn to the alluring mother-daughter pair. But Mia carries with her a mysterious past, and a disregard for the rules that threatens to upend this carefully ordered community. When the Richardsons' friends attempt to adopt a Chinese-American baby, a custody battle erupts that dramatically divides the town and puts Mia and Mrs. Richardson on opposing sides. Suspicious of Mia and her motives, Mrs. Richardson becomes determined to uncover the secrets in Mia's past. But her obsession will come at unexpected and devastating costs to her own family – and Mia's.
Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi: Zélie Adebola remembers when the soil of Orïsha hummed with magic. Burners ignited flames, Tiders beckoned waves, and Zelie’s Reaper mother summoned forth souls.  But everything changed the night magic disappeared. Under the orders of a ruthless king, maji were targeted and killed, leaving Zélie without a mother and her people without hope. Now, Zélie has one chance to bring back magic and strike against the monarchy. With the help of a rogue princess, Zélie must outwit and outrun the crown prince, who is hell-bent on eradicating magic for good.  Danger lurks in Orïsha, where snow leoponaires prowl and vengeful spirits wait in the waters. Yet the greatest danger may be Zélie herself as she struggles to control her powers—and her growing feelings for the enemy.

How Bacteria Could Protect Tumors From Anticancer Drugs
Cancers have unwitting allies: the healthy cells that surround them. Several groups of scientists have now found that normal cells can inadvertently release substances that shield their malignant neighbors from anticancer drugs. That would explain why even targeted therapies—smart drugs that are meant to hit the specific genetic faults behind various cancers—sometimes stumble right out of the gate. When pitted against isolated cancer cells in laboratory tests, they perform as expected. But when pitted against actual tumors, which enjoy a kind of innate resistance because of the healthy cells around them, the drugs can fail.
But at least half of the cells in the human body are not human.
Every person is a seething colony of microbes—a collection of tens of trillions of bacteria and other microscopic organisms that live in and on our bodies. And a team of researchers, led by Ravid Straussman from the Weizmann Institute of Science and Todd Golub from Harvard Medical School, have shown that some of these bacteria can also shield tumors from anticancer drugs.
Back in 2012, Straussman and Golub’s team grew dozens of types of cancer cells together with dozens of types of healthy cells, and found hundreds of combinations where the latter protected the former to some degree against chemotherapy. But one particular interaction was especially dramatic: A lineage of skin cells from one individual could completely protect pancreatic cancer cells from gemcitabine—a frontline drug that’s used to treat this stubborn disease.
“We could pour on more and more gemcitabine—ten times more than was needed to kill the cancers—and the skin cells from this woman were enough to protect them,” Straussman recalls. Even the liquid in which the skin cells had grown was enough to protect cancers from gemcitabine. Clearly, the skin cells were secreting some kind of chemical that neutralized the drug. But what was it? A protein? A piece of DNA? The team spent years trying to identify the mystery molecule, to no avail. “We did tons of experiments and they led us nowhere,” says Straussman. “It didn’t make any sense.”
They finally worked out what was happening when they filtered the liquid—and completely removed its ability to protect tumors. Even filter paper with very large pores, through which most molecules could easily fit, had this effect. That’s when they realized that they weren’t dealing with a molecule at all. They were dealing with a microbe.
The team, including Straussman’s student Leore Geller, showed that a bacterium called Mycoplasma hyorhinis had infected the skin cells. If they killed it off with antibiotics, the cells could no longer rescue cancers from chemo. And if they added the bacterium to mice that were suffering from tumors, the rodents became resistant to gemcitabine.
It turns out that Mycoplasma hyorhinis has an enzyme called CDD that can dull gemcitabine’s sting by converting it into another inactive chemical. And it’s not alone. One in every nine known species of bacteria has a version of CDD with the same ability. And some of these drug-defusing bacteria exist within the actual tumors of people with pancreatic cancer.
The team showed that by checking biopsies from the tumors of 113 pancreatic cancer patients, as well as samples from 20 healthy pancreases taken from organ donors. Just 15 percent of the healthy organs contained traces of bacterial DNA, compared to 76 percent of the tumor samples. And while bacterial DNA could just have come from dead cells, the team also saw whole intact bacteria within the tumors. They treated the samples with glowing antibodies designed to latch onto bacterial molecules, and then looked through a microscope. And there they were: bacteria, nestled among—or sometimes within—the cancer cells.
The bacteria in the tumors were a motley crew of varied species, and Mycoplasma wasn’t among them. But almost all of these microbes had the CDD enzyme, and almost all of them could neutralize gemcitabine.
Straussman thinks that these bacteria could reach the pancreas through two different routes. The pancreas secretes hormones and digestive enzymes into the gut, and microbes could reach it by traveling in the opposite direction. Alternatively, they could travel via the blood. Bacteria enter our bloodstream all the time, leaking through from our guts, mouths, and other organs. Typically, the immune system takes care of these interlopers, but tumors are weird places where the immune system is suppressed and blood vessels are unusually leaky. They could easily act as refuges for wayward bacteria.
“It would be naïve to think that antibiotics would cure these patients,” Straussman says. For a start, microbes would be just one of the many hurdles to successfully treating pancreatic cancer. Courses of antibiotics might also take out bacteria in other parts of the body, and some studies have shown that certain cancer drugs depend on the presence of such microbes. And finally, you’d likely need to administer antibiotics for a long time to kill off the bacteria lurking within a pancreatic tumor. “You’d get antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains, and you really don’t want those in patients,” Straussman says. A better solution, he says, would be to look for molecules that can block the CDD enzyme, and stop the bacteria from neutralizing gemcitabine.
Other scientists will need to replicate this work to see if they can detect the same bacteria in these kinds of tumors. In studies of this kind, there’s always the nagging possibility that the microbes in question could have come from equipment, the researchers’ bodies, or the laboratory environment, rather than from the actual tumors.“Contamination is a hazard in this work; this is an important concern,” says Libusha Kelly from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
And even if the microbes are there, it’s not clear if they would neutralize gemcitabine to the degree the researchers saw in the lab, or if they would actually make a difference to a person’s treatment. Microbes or no, gemcitabine or no, pancreatic cancer is still a notoriously difficult disease to treat. “Many different microbial enzymes have the capacity to metabolize drugs,” Kelly says. “What we don’t understand is how often this potential is actually realized in a way that influences treatment outcomes.”
Still, “the study reminds us that the tumor microenvironment consists of more than just human cells,” says Emily Balskus from Harvard University. There are microbes too, and variations in these communities could explain why some people respond well to treatments and others do not. “We can’t fully understand human health and disease without considering these organisms.”
“This work could also have implications for cancer drug development and cancer therapy,” Balskus adds. Doctors might make different decisions about how to treat a patient based on the microbes that are found in or near their tumors. And researchers might develop new ways of treating cancer by targeting these microbes instead of the cancer cells directly.
“It’s not just pancreatic cancer and it’s not just gemcitabine,” Straussman says. “There are bacteria in tumors that we never knew bacteria were present in—and that fact has broad implications. These microbes might influence so many other hallmarks of cancer.” Do they affect a patient’s response to immunotherapy—treatments that stimulate the immune system? Do they influence cancer stem cells—the cells that generate the bulk of a tumor? Do they influence metastasis—the process through which cancers spread through the body?
“Every buzzword you can think of in cancer ... how are they affected by bacteria in tumors?” says Straussman. “My team is exploring many of these directions, but we’re just starting.”

A long time ago, in April of 1862, a Union force called the Army of Tennessee led by Major General Ulysses S. Grant camped at Pittsburgh Landing, Tennessee. On April 6, the Confederate Army of Mississippi led by General Albert Sidney Johnston launched a surprise attack on them on the west side of the Tennessee River. The battle raged for two days and the Confederate Army retreated at the end. The fighting left over 16,000 wounded and 3,000 dead, and neither of the armies was medically prepared for that scale. Though several of the wounded died due to infections, something else also happened after the battle which unexpectedly saved many of them.
Two days after the Battle of Shiloh, which occurred on April 6-7, 1862, the medics who arrived at the battleground noticed that the wounds of many soldiers had a faint, greenish-blue glow at night. Mysteriously, the wounds that glowed healed faster and scarred less than those that did not glow giving it the name “Angel’s Glow.”
Unfortunately, after the battle, the wounded soldiers did not receive immediate help as the armies did not foresee that there would be such large-scale slaughter. Help arrived two days later, and until then the soldiers had to lie in the mud and under the rain. When the medics finally arrived, they noticed that some of the wounds had a faint glow and that they had fewer infections, healed faster, and left less scar tissue. The glow soon earned itself the nickname “Angel’s Glow” among the soldiers, and many who heard of it dismissed it as folklore or exaggeration until last decade when two teenagers finally solved the mystery.
Almost 140 years after the battle, the phenomenon was finally explained by two students Bill Martin and Jon Curtis, seventeen and eighteen years old respectively, during a science fair in 2001. Martin got the idea when his mother, a microbiologist, was working on luminescent bacteria that live in soil.
Bill Martin once went on a visit to the battlegrounds of Shiloh and when he heard about the glowing wounds of the soldiers he asked his mother, Phyllis Martin, a microbiologist at USDA Agricultural Research Service in Beltsville, Maryland, if the P. luminescens bacteria she was working on could be responsible for the phenomenon. When she told him to experiment and find out, he partnered with his friend Jim Curtis to start their research.
However, during their experiments, they discovered that the P. luminescens cannot survive at normal human body temperatures. Then they found that since the soldiers were wounded and left on the battlefield they would have experienced hypothermia due to wet conditions in which they had to wait, and that would have helped the bacteria.
The Photorhabdus luminescens bacteria live inside parasitic worms called nematodes that reside in the blood vessels of larvae and eat them inside out.
The P. luminescens bacteria and the nematodes have a simple symbiotic relationship. After the nematodes burrow into the insect larvae they spew out the bacteria inside their gut. The bacteria then produces chemicals that suppress and kill all other microorganisms along with their host larva. Then, the nematodes and the bacteria feed on the larva growing and multiplying without facing any resistance. When the host is hollowed out, the nematodes swallow the bacteria back and let them recolonize inside their gut. Soon, their bioluminescence attracts other insects providing them a further food source.
As the P. luminiscens bacteria release chemicals that kill all other bacteria, basically acting as very effective antibiotics, the glowing wounds healed faster increasing the soldiers’ chances of survival.
The wounds of the soldiers which glowed blue could easily have been infected by the bacteria as they get exposed to the dirt, debris, or shrapnel which are contaminated. Along with that, the temperatures during the nights in early April were relatively cool due to rains which lowered the body temperature of the soldiers giving perfect conditions for the P. luminiscens bacteria to thrive. What’s even more fortunate is that neither the bacteria nor the nematodes are infectious to humans, so the soldiers were never harmed by either of them.
For their study, Bill Martin and Jon Curtis earned first prize in the 2001 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair. Whether benevolent angels truly exist or not, the soldiers who survived definitely had P. luminiscens bacteria to thank for their lives.
