Long seen as a bucolic, oceanside respite for New York’s wealthiest, the Hamptons has historically been maintained by an often-unseen group of working-class people, many of them people of color. The under-known stories of the area’s Black, Indigenous, and Latinx residents, whose labor makes these networks of towns and hamlets so inviting, is currently the focus of artist Tomashi Jackson’s latest solo show.

That multi-part exhibition, “The Land Claim” at the Parrish Art Museum in Water Mill (on view through November 7), features seven paintings, a vinyl window installation, an outdoor audio work, and archival materials. All of the work draws on extensive research by Jackson and her team, which included connecting with community members to conduct oral histories. As with her past work, Jackson’s latest paintings are layered compositions that feel at once abstract and figurative. Archival photographs painted in a bright halftones peek out behind vinyl panels printed with other images. The geometric effect is softened by Jackson’s incorporation of materials—paper bags, burlap sacks, soil, wampum dust, and more—into the canvases.

These works grew out of a 2017 visit to the Hamptons with Parrish curator Corinne Erni, who told Jackson about something that is a regular occurrence for the area’s Latinx population: traffic stops. The community continues to be disproportionately targeted; a class action lawsuit in 2015 revealed that Latinos were also being robbed during these traffic stops. Because a significant portion of the population is undocumented, these stops often led to their being detained by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

“People are getting disappeared, yet there’s no visual representation, no photos, no videos—just data,” Jackson told ARTnews in a recent phone interview.

He doesn’t expect Adrian to push him so hard he slams into the pillar behind him. He looks back at Adrian, whose eyes are glaring at him with a fierce hot anger.

“Don’t tell me what I would have done."

For 3 years Adrian has been starting over, while Deran remained clueless in Oceanside. Now that Deran knows where he is, it is time for these boys to have much needed conversation with tension, anger and heartbreak hanging over them.

He watches as Adrian lays on the ground staring up at the ceiling, his chest heaving up and down. His fist clenching open and closed before Adrian stomps his feet down and sits up. Before Deran knows it, a large heavy shoe is thrown at his face. “What the hell?”

“Damn it Deran you are never going to get it are you? I didn’t tell you about getting busted so you can come rescue me. I told you because, as your partner, it was the right thing to do and I never should have held it off as long as I did. For that I am sorry, but fuck man I never wanted you to save me, I just... I just wanted you to choose me for once.” That last part coming out as a whisper.

Deran watches as Adrian’s body just deflates in defeat, crosses his legs together and keeps his head down, eyes away from Deran’s.

He feels the familiar burn in his face and throws his head against the wall behind him. He brings his knees up to his chest, laying his arms over them as he rubs his eyes.

“Believe me or not, but not choosing you was the hardest thing I ever did. It wasn’t because I didn’t love you.”

Adrian still doesn’t move, just continues to scratch at nothing on the floor in front of him before finally nodding his head.

“I know. It just wasn’t enough.”

Adrian lets out a harsh breath and stands up walking over to Deran and snatches his shoe, putting it back on his foot and plopping down on a nearby chair.

“Which is why I couldn’t get on that plane. I just lost you, if I left I would lose my family, my home, and my freedom. I would lose everything and I couldn’t let that happen. In the end, I was lucky. My family came through for me, despite what you thought yours would do.”

Deran can't help but flinch at that last line. Adrian was always good at that. Adding in one line that went in for the kill like a knife to his chest. It was actually one of the things that attracted Deran to Adrian, his cunningness to know how to use words like a weapon, until he felt the pain of it every time he did Adrian wrong. “That’s not fair.”

“Why do you care? You chose to be with your family. So be with your family.”

“It’s not like I didn’t care. I can’t just…I can’t just stop caring about you.”

“Trust me Deran I am the last person you need to tell that too.” Adrian glares down at him. His eyes shooting ice cold daggers. It brings Deran to his feet, pacing back and forth, pulling his hair in frustration.

“So what? This is how it’s going to be now? I am just supposed to move on, forget you ever existed? When you are actually just a few towns over.”

Adrian stands up, stepping up to Deran who stops pacing and stares at him. “Yes Deran. That is exactly what you are going to do. This isn’t something you can just fix.”

“Why not?” He pleads.

It was one thing when believing that Adrian was far away in Indonesia, away from any harm that could come to him from here. It is a whole other thing knowing he is literally hours away. So hard to ignore that feeling that has always called out to the surfer boy.

Adrian looks at Deran, tears brimming over his eyes as he tries to stay strong. Trying to use all the hurt he felt that night as motivation. Trying to forget all the pain he saw in Deran’s eyes as he refused to leave with Adrian. Remembering he chose the family he always said he wanted to get away from over the man he said he loved.

“Don’t do this Deran. This is for the best.” He says, taking a step back from Deran. He scratches his throat as he tries to add “We are just toxic to each other.”

“Well I am used to toxic.” Deran says, giving off a bittersweet smile to Adrian. It only adds to the pain deep in Adrian’s chest.

To some American companies and Florida men, COVID-19 is apparently a war that will be won through antimicrobial blasting, to ensure that pathogens are banished from every square inch of America’s surface area.

But what if this is all just a huge waste of time?

In May, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention updated its guidelines to clarify that while COVID-19 spreads easily among speakers and sneezers in close encounters, touching a surface “isn’t thought to be the main way the virus spreads.” Other scientists have reached a more forceful conclusion. “Surface transmission of COVID-19 is not justified at all by the science,” Emanuel Goldman, a microbiology professor at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, told me. He also emphasized the primacy of airborne person-to-person transmission.

The first James Bond museum is fit for a supervillain

The late Ian Fleming would have loved the first official James Bond museum: The 14,000-square-foot building is perched atop the summit of the Gaislachkogl Mountain, 10,000 feet above sea level in the Austrian side of the Ötztal Alps. It’s ensconced in a breathtaking, two-level Brutalist shell composed of panoramic glass walls, concrete, and steel. It could easily be mistaken for a film set from the movies.

That’s because it nearly is. The museum, 007 Elements, is near two buildings–the futuristic Gaislachkoglbahn Mountain Gondola terminal and ICE Q restaurant–that were used as locations for 2015’s Spectre. The latter, another modernist glass and steel structure, was featured prominently in the movie, doubling as a high-tech hospital at the service of the evil organization’s chief.

The new museum was designed by the architect of the restaurant, Johann Obermoser, and when it opens to film fans (and unsuspecting skiers) on July 12, you’ll be able to arrive at the summit in a gondola, go to the museum, and then have lunch at ICE Q overlooking the Alpine range. In fact, the museum is a joint venture between the producers of the Bond films–EON and MGM–and the company that owns the cable car line and the restaurant, Bergbahnen Sölden.

Inside, immersive media installations will walk visitors through all the locations and iconic elements of all 24 Bond films, with a combination of interviews, film clips, behind-the-scenes shots, archival footage and artwork, set design, and bespoke graphic animations. For example, one fascinating installation is an inside look at how the large-scale sets used to make old Bond films, like Moonraker and You Only Live Twice–with its iconic Blofeld’s Volcano Lair–were built at the legendary Pinewood Studios in England.

Two of those large installations were designed and developed by Territory Studio, a London-based independent design and visual effects studio that worked on the films Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, Skyfall, and Spectre. The creative director for the museum, Neal Callow, was also art director for those films, making the space a true extension of the film empire. The rest of the installation was designed in collaboration with Tino Schaedler, head of design at the creative agency Optimist Inc.

If you want to visit, you’ll need to fly to nearby Innsbruck to grab a cab–or just rent an Aston Martin and drive, like Bond would–to Sölden, the ski town at the base of the Gaislachkogl. The only downside to the museum’s stunning Alpine location? The weather. I would have chosen an oceanside site somewhere in the south of France or Italy, with an underwater wing that would allow you to pilot Bond’s submarine car, while sipping Campari and watching British spies fighting sharks with laser-gun-equipped Rolex watches. But this is the next best thing.

A year after setting up shop in Tokyo as a freelance private detective, Shuichi Saihara takes on a case in a sleepy, oceanside town. Under-qualified as he may feel taking on a string of murders, he dives in headfirst.

However, Shuichi's suspicions that something even more sinister may be afoot in the tiny town of Kiwasetsu do not go unfounded for long. Residents who live by the sea leave food outside of their homes at night, the siblings that tend to the local shrine have never been seen together once, high volumes of dead marine life wash up on the town's shore without warning, and urban legends frequent the village about a mysterious creature who lures young men into the ocean, never to be seen again.

Neil Young celebrated the launch of his digital archives and the release of new album The Visitor with a special acoustic “hometown” concert at Omemee, Ontario’s Coronation Hall.

Over the course of the intimate gig in “a town in north Ontario” – which was live-streamed and is now available to view on Facebook – an unaccompanied Young delivered the live debut of The Visitor‘s “Stand Tall” as well as dusted off songs he hadn’t performed live in decades, including Harvest‘s “There’s a World” – played for the first time since 1971 – and “Don’t Be Denied,” which Young hadn’t performed live as a solo artist since 2003.

The concert also featured rare performances of Storytone cuts like “Tumbleweed” and “I’m Glad I Found You” along with favorites like “Helpless,” “Heart of Gold” and “Old Man” before concluding with “Sugar Mountain.”

The setlist leaned toward Young songs that touched on his Canadian roots: “Helpless,” “Don’t Be Denied,” “One of These Days” and “Journey Through the Past” all make passing mention to Canada. The live-stream also raised over $18,000 for the Bridge School.

Young’s decades-spanning set list came just hours after the rocker assembled his entire recorded history into his Neil Young Archives. “This archive is designed to be a living document, constantly evolving and including every new recording and film as it is made,” Young wrote in his welcome to the Archives.

The Archives also teased the impending arrival of nearly a dozen still-unreleased Young albums, including Chrome Dreams, Homegrown and Oceanside Countryside and live LPs like Odeon Budokan, The Boarding House and Solo Trans.

“There are about ten unreleased albums and a few unreleased films in this archive,” Young wrote. “These are projects I did not release at the time for one reason or another, and many of the songs subsequently appeared on other albums as the years flew past.”
