Woodchip Barn
Project by, Mohaimeen Islam (Bangladesh), Zachary Mollica (Canada), Sahil Shah (India), Swetha Vegesana (India), Yung-Chen Yang (Taiwan) Studio: Project and Make Studio (Work of M.Arch Thesis) Year: 2015-16 Location: Hooke Park, Dorset, UK

Five architects designed and built the Woodchip Barn as students of AA Design & Make MArch 2014/15 programme, for their final group project. Being the students of Design & Make, they used ‘prototyping’ as ‘vehicles’ for design research, developing modes of experimental architectural design that integrated full-scale making. Situated in the unique context of historic English woodland, the course was based at Hooke Park, the AA’s Dorset campus for research in timber and alternative rural architectures. The MArch programme is mainly run by Programme Director Martin Self and Emmanuel Vercruysse.

THE WOOD CHIP BARN LINK: https://designandmake.aaschool.ac.uk/project/wood-chip-barn/
Design & Make’s 2015/16 project was the robotically fabricated Woodchip Barn at Hooke Park, the AA’s forest campus in Dorset, UK. Following the installation of a woodchip-fuelled biomass boiler on previous year, the students of the AA’s Design & Make 2014/15 programme were tasked with the construction of a bulk woodchip storage barn to allow the campus to be sustainably heated with Hooke Park’s own trees. The ambition of the design was to use found natural junctions/forks in trees – structurally, using 3D scanning as a feedback for the newly acquired robot-arm to fabricate the structure. The final arching structure of the barn is thus formed from forked beech tree components directly sourced from the surrounding woodland.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The initial responsibility was to survey Hooke Park’s beech compartments in teams, to help in preparing a database of potential forked components, from which the structural concept was developed. Based on the criteria of that concept, 25 forks were harvested from the forest, brought back to the campus, and scanned in 3D. An organization script was used to generate a final arrangement of forks in collaboration with engineers from Arup. This digital model was then translated into fabrication information with which Hooke Park’s new robotic arm transformed each fork into a finished component.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The 180 sqm Wood Chip Barn is located at Hooke Park’s wood-processing yard. Spanning 25 m x 10 m, the building consists of a concrete slab, timber push-walls and a wooden roof, suspended from that arching vierendeel truss formed by beech tree-forks. The truss, after being preassembled in Hooke Park’s Big Shed [LINK: https://www.dezeen.com/2012/04/25/hooke-park-big-shed-by-piers-taylor-and-aa-unit-19/] and all other components, in the yard, were then erected on site under the guidance of Dorset craftsman Jack Draper who coordinated the fabrication and site operations. To aid a productive workflow upto construction stage, the building task was divided in four components: Floor & Wall, Roof, Truss, and Truss legs – each one/two of the students with responsibility of designing and testing these FOUR PARTS to finally combine them onsite into a whole building.
Tumblr media
In this building the role of the push-wall was quite significant as it had to contain the wood-chip, and provide surfaces to scoop against when extracting chip with a telehandler. The walls had to be essentially cantilevered structures, totally independent of the truss. They had to be fixed on the concrete slab, to account to its self-load and the lateral loads of the chips, and also to carry the vertical load of the roof at its eves. This led to the configuration, where chipping will take place through the clearstory opening on the long elevation and extraction shall occur at the open gable-end; resulting into a geometry of three straight walls. Continuous effort has been given to dissolve the robustness of the linear wall by putting members, e.g. beams and studs on the exterior. Ar. Mohaimeen was involved in preparing complete drawing sets and also fabricating components for the floor, wall, roof and making 1:20 model of the actual truss structure. However, his core responsibility at this stage included designing and testing options for the Floor and the Push-wall by making scale models and mock-ups. To test its visual, tactile, and structural integrity, a series of models at 1:20 scale and a mock-up at 1:2 scale, were made to get feedback from the physical objects. At this point, a plan was made to fabricate the various components of the wall which were then to be assembled on site.
Such experiments provoked a critical understanding of the need and scope for experimentation in the context of Hooke Park for realizing how digital design and fabrication technique can re-invent traditional methods of ‘making’ to create an architecture that is evidence-based, innovative, yet appropriate to context, allowing interaction between client-designer-builder. Developing the precedent set by Hooke Park’s three twentieth-century buildings by architects and engineers including Frei Otto, the Wood Chip Barn explores an alternative vision of 'digital age' wooden building. The construction of the large span arched Vierendeel truss composed of twenty beech forks is presented in 2015-16 year’s project as a full scale materialization of this idea. 3d scanning and robotic technologies has allowed forks from the Hooke Park forest to be harvested to create a structure with minimal processing and without the use of custom fabricated steel components. With the integration of 3-d scanning, robotic-fabrication, and form-finding techniques combined with traditional knowledge, the Wood Chip Barn is an experiment of non-standard architectural production.

Existing bamboo architecture
Tumblr media
The Arc by Ibuku
Informed by the way the human ribcage is held in place by the tension from the surrounding muscles and skin, architecture studio Ibuku created a self-supporting roof made entirely from bamboo for the gymnasium of Bali's Green School.
Composed of 14-metre-high cane arches connected by double-curved gridshells, the "unprecedented" structure is capable of enclosing a large area using minimal material while leaving the floor underneath uninterrupted by supporting columns.
Tumblr media
Bamboo Sports Hall by Chiangmai Life Architects and Construction
Sweeping, 17-metre trusses were prefabricated on-site and lifted into position using a crane to create a sports hall for Thailand's Panyaden International School, set among rice fields on the outskirts of Chiang Mai.
An open lattice structure cuts out the need for air conditioning and by eschewing steel fixings in favour of rope, Chiangmai Life Architects and Construction claims it was able to create a building that absorbed more carbon in its materials than was emitted through its construction.
Tumblr media
Hardelot Theatre by Studio Andrew Todd
Twelve-metre-high poles of bamboo encircle the cylindrical Hardelot Theatre near Calais, creating a cage-like exterior and a radiating pattern that emanates from its roof.
This gridded structure is mirrored in the slatted timber panelling of the playhouse, which was designed as a homage to Shakespeare's Globe Theatre.
Tumblr media
Vedana Restaurant by Vo Trong Nghia
Although the towering roof of Nghia's Vedana Restaurant appears to be formed from three thatched gables, the dome is actually a single structure formed from 36 bamboo modules.
This fact is revealed only on the interior, where the intersecting rods are left exposed and form a spiralling mandala pattern across the cavernous ceiling.
"It is not easy to create beautiful spaces by using bamboo because it is an uneven material," Nghia said. "We try to control the accuracy of the construction by applying unit-frame prefabrication."

4 Uncommon Roof Trusses and Their Uses
Tumblr media
King, queen, and fink trusses are typically used for two-story houses. They are popular because they are strong and easy to assemble. However, if you’re looking for something that gives your roof a unique shape and character, you may want to use these four uncommon roof truss designs. Check them out below.
Raised Collar
A raised collar truss is a structural support used in the roof of a building and provides extra support for the rafters and roofing. Raised collar trusses are commonly used in new construction and provide better support than a traditional roof.
Arched
An arch truss is one of the most common trusses used today. Arched trusses are known for their cost-effectiveness, low weight, and durability. They can also span greater distances making them the best choice for people who need to span large spaces such as big sporting arenas or long bridges. Arched trusses also have a longer life span than other types of trusses.
Tasman
A Tasman truss is a type of truss that is typically used in large-span buildings. These trusses are very versatile, being able to span up to 90 feet, have a constant depth, are easy to install, are non-combustible, and are cost-effective. This truss can span much greater distances than traditional trusses, are easy to install in tight spaces, is lightweight, and cost-effective.
Cruck
A cruck truss is a form of timber framing that uses a pair of curved timbers to create a triangular, diagonal, or trapezoidal structure. Crucks have curved timbers that reduce the need for nails or wooden pegs to hold them together. This allows builders to create more designs easily.

Plans for the Queen's lying in state and funeral
By The Visual Journalism Team
BBC News, 9 September 2022
Tumblr media
The Queen has died, ending the longest reign in British history.
She died peacefully, surrounded by her family at Balmoral Castle in Scotland.
In the days ahead, here's what we expect for her lying in state and her state funeral, as the nation pays its respects.
Scottish journey
The Queen's coffin will depart Balmoral estate in the coming days for the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh - the official residence of the British monarch in Scotland.
From here, it will be taken in procession to St Giles' Cathedral, where the Queen will lie at rest for 24 hours, allowing the public to view her coffin.
Tumblr media
The coffin will then move to London, ready for the lying in state.
The Queen's lying in state
The Queen will lie in state in Westminster Hall for about four days before her funeral, allowing members of the public to file past and pay their respects.
The grand hall is the oldest part of the Palace of Westminster, at the heart of British government.
The last member of the Royal Family to lie in state in the hall was the Queen Mother in 2002, when more than 200,000 people queued to view her coffin.
Tumblr media
The Queen's coffin will rest on a raised platform, known as a catafalque, beneath the 11th Century hall's medieval timber roof.
Each corner of the platform will be guarded by soldiers from units that serve the Royal Household.
She will be brought to Westminster Hall from Buckingham Palace in a slow procession, accompanied by a military parade and members of the Royal Family.
People will also be able to watch the procession as it passes through the streets and big screens broadcasting events are likely to be set up in London's Royal Parks.
Her coffin will be draped in the Royal Standard, and once in Westminster Hall, it will be topped with the Imperial State Crown, orb and sceptre.
Tumblr media
Once the coffin is placed in position in the hall, a short service will be held. Afterwards, the public will be allowed to enter.
When is the Queen's funeral?
The Queen's state funeral is expected to take place at Westminster Abbey in less than two weeks.
The exact day will be confirmed by Buckingham Palace.
The Abbey is the historic church where Britain's kings and queens are crowned, including the Queen's coronation in 1953, and where she had married Prince Philip in 1947.
Tumblr media
There hasn't been a monarch's funeral service in the Abbey since the 18th Century, although the funeral of the Queen's mother was held there in 2002.
Heads of state from across the world will be flying in to join members of the Royal Family to remember the life and service of the Queen. Senior UK politicians and former prime ministers will also be there.
The day will begin as the Queen's coffin is carried from Westminster Hall to Westminster Abbey on the State Gun Carriage of the Royal Navy.
Tumblr media
The gun carriage was last seen in 1979 for the funeral of Prince Philip's uncle, Lord Mountbatten, drawn by 142 sailors from the Royal Navy.
Senior members of the Royal Family, including the new King, are likely to follow in procession.
The service will likely be conducted by the Dean of Westminster David Hoyle, with the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby giving the sermon. Prime Minister Liz Truss may be called on to read a lesson.
Tumblr media
Following the funeral service, the Queen's coffin will be drawn in a walking procession from the abbey to Wellington Arch at London's Hyde Park Corner, before heading to Windsor by hearse.
The Queen's coffin will make its final journey that afternoon to St George's Chapel in Windsor Castle.
Tumblr media
The King and senior members of the Royal Family are expected to join the procession in the Quadrangle in Windsor Castle before the coffin enters St George's Chapel for a committal service.
St George's Chapel is the church regularly chosen by the Royal Family for weddings, christenings and funerals.
Tumblr media
The Queen's coffin will be lowered into the Royal Vault before being interred in the King George VI memorial chapel, located inside St George's Chapel.

The Robert C. Beach Memorial Bridge spans Dunkard Creek just a few hops (as the crow flies) from the historic Dent’s Run Covered Bridge in Monongalia County. Although the two spans are as distant in technology as the abacus is from the microchip, they share a primary construction material - wood. Designed by the Division of Highways in cooperation with the West Virginia University Wood Technology Program, the Robert C. Beach Memorial Bridge is constructed of a fiber-reinforced polymer deck supported by a timber arch truss - a novel design back in 2004 when it was completed. In addition to its innovative technology, the bridge offers lovely views of Dunkard Creek and the heavily-wooded slopes to either side of the span.

In between walks a few things have happened, such as getting the end walls tidied up in readiness for cladding. Today I made a bit of progress on a doorway too. A nearby neighbour has dismantled their garage as part of a planned house extension, so a 200yd walk enabled me to gather a few of the old trusses. The red arch shows roughly where they were in use yesterday. With local timber yards closed I had thought I'd not be able to find any batten for the roof, to enable the cedar shingles to go on. But this wood + my table saw will rectify that shortfall. The shingles themselves *all* came out of a skip, though it was a good 2 years of regular visits to collect this hoard. Now I'm just hoping there will be enough for the job! . . . . . #skipdivingtreasures #makinguseofwaste #lockdownlodge #localprovenance #cedarshingles #recentlyrecovered #reclaimedwood #summerhouse #gardenroom #progressisbeingmade https://www.instagram.com/p/B_S3nKKjfUZ/?igshid=mcv4geaxqr8a

Fire Mauls Beloved Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris
By Adam Nossiter and Aurelien Breeden April 15, 2019
PARIS — Notre-Dame cathedral, the symbol of the beauty and history of Paris, was scarred by an extensive fire on Monday evening that caused its delicate spire to collapse, bruised the Parisian skies with smoke and further disheartened a city already back on its heels after weeks of violent protests.
The spectacle of flames leaping from the cathedral’s wooden roof — its spire glowing red then turning into a virtual cinder — stunned thousands of onlookers who gathered along the banks of the Seine and packed into the plaza of the nearby Hôtel de Ville, gasping and covering their mouths in horror and wiping away tears.
How the Notre-Dame Cathedral Fire Spread
It took less than an hour for a fire to spread from the attic of the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, race across the wooden rooftop and topple its 300-foot spire.
Around 6:30 p.m., Paris time, smoke began to pour out of the cathedral’s roof, near scaffolding that had been put up over the last few months to conduct renovations on the spire.
The fire started in the cathedral’s attic, said Jean-Claude Gallet, commander of the Paris firefighters.
The attic is an oddly shaped space, seldom visited, that lies above the soaring stone arches visible from the floor of old European cathedrals. Diagrams of Notre-Dame and official descriptions of the space indicate that it is crisscrossed by giant, timber trusses that add structural integrity to the cathedral.
“Once these massive timber structures start to burn, they almost never can be stopped,” said Jonathan Barnett, an international fire safety authority at Basic Expert in Australia. “We focus on their masonry walls and forget all the massive timber within.”
Each beam of the cathedral attic’s wooden frame is made from an individual tree — more than 1,300 in total — giving it the nickname “the forest.”
A dry space like the attic tends to accumulate dust and debris, making it even more flammable. “That’s where your risk really is,” said Andrew Tremlett, the Dean of Durham Cathedral in the United Kingdom, which has a similar wooden vaulted roof like Notre-Dame’s.
After taking over the attic, the blaze quickly spread across the roof and engulfed the spire, a wood-frame structure covered in lead.

Sorts Of Steel Roofing Trusses - Kassem Ajami
Kassem Ajami states steel roof trusses are the best structural sort of steel and it's a design's most important and also famous aspect also.
Steel Roofing System Trusses Are Likewise Comprised Of Specific Participants With Equal Counteracting Tensile: Kassem Ajami
The primary purpose of designing the steel roof covering trusses is to act as a single item which lugs or should I say sustain the hefty load over a span. The arc which generally makes use of for the compressions and routes that applies a force along its member on the ground. The death of a curved truss system is the forces of tension; the longer the span the shallower the curved truss comes to be, permitting the forces of tension for applying more pressure and destination and also for triggering the arc's which aids in supporting such load that are applied on a roofing system. Just for avoiding them, the arch trusses takes advantage of among the most structural design most basic shapes of the triangle. A truss system layout is primarily 3 members the first one gets on a top chord, 2nd one on a bottom chord as well as other continuing to be indoor members which called the webbing or webs.
 Benefit Of Trusses
While steel trusses can be a whole lot a lot more pricey and also harder to set up than timber trusses and also exact same time steel supplies numerous benefits too. Steel is lightweight as all of us recognizes that, which offers a terrific benefit it can be mounted quickly and also it's constructed from recycled materials.
If you will certainly compare with wood after that we would love to let you know that steel is additionally fire as well as insect resistance as well as would not obtain rust.
But we can not neglect the truth that steel additionally calls for little upkeep over other metal in a timely manner to time or one of the most crucial benefit of it is like it's a recyclable at the end of its life-span.
If will speak about the lumber which can not perhaps be uniform due to its integral and also natural surroundings or exact same time steel trusses are entirely real to form time and again.
For that reason, all the trusses that exist all gets to the work website as well as are likewise created exactly with minute variant.
To being sincere with you the steel and steel buildings will surely get the extra points and also will certainly also obtain the trusted eco-friendly building qualification. One of the major reasons for this is that steel trusses are fabricated consuming to 90% recycled web content and are likewise 100% recyclable at the end of their lifespan. This, combined with the reality that they are extremely sturdy as well as rarely require to be replace, makes them an extremely eco-friendly building item.
Fire-retardant finishings render steel roofing trusses essentially undestroyable by fire. This is necessary for any structure with living owners or that residences useful residential property. the fire resistance included likewise offers a benefit for frameworks that are well constructed for high tornado areas or for the type of locations where there is a high risk about seismic activity, hope you are getting our words
 Kinds Of Steel Roof Trusses
Pratt truss
The most typically and economical trusses essentially located in construction sites or the website where there is a need of kind of truss which stays longer and can take care of the hefty weight, storm and all.
In this kind of the members normally position vertically and this is for the compression where there are diagonals one react to the tension. This truss is considered to make use of in such type of jobs that have a span of around 20-- 100 meters.
Pratt truss are usually can be found in two types we have actually discussed:
Pratt truss with second members
Duo-pitch Pratt truss
Warren truss
In this steel truss all the angled members out there are usually location contrary and also the reason for that is to produce a shape of 'W.'.
Apart from that they additionally have equal compression as well as very same time some stress. For this reason, it requires the less variety of members as contrasted to Pratt truss.
The actual benefit of using Warren trusses for your project is that, this specially comes in a type of a project where there is a 20 to 100 meters of span.
 Fink truss.
This is thought about as one of the most commonly utilizes for a roofing system.
There is a point that Fink truss has shorter members and some chords in addition to that also.
This type of steel roof trusses for which we are notifying you serves in places which have a much shorter period, as a result of shorter size, however the benefit of using Fink trusses arelike these all are really affordable to utilize.
 King message truss.
Do you know that, King Post trusses are among the most basic truss of fabricate, king blog post truss additionally has two sided angle which support members. These angles are sort of trusses which are used for a brief duration of girth 8 meters therefore, and likewise they is available in an use for cottages.
 Queen blog post truss.
As Like as the king message truss which we have actually pointed out over, queen blog post truss is extremely simple to fabricate however aside from that it is likewise very flexible in operation.
This kind of trusses are utilized to make covered bridges, roof coverings, and so on.
It can additionally come in an use a of 10 range under the 10 meters.
 Howe truss.
Steel roof covering Howe truss is generally a genuine combination of steel and also timber. The use of steelHowe truss supply some added assistance to the construction site and also decreases the risk.
Apart from that they likewise have a significant period, that can cover around 5-- 25 meters.
Due to its adaptability and also this sort of trusses utilized in a building.
 North light truss.
If you will move your eyes around then you will certainly locate that a person of the earliest and also resistant trusses which has been located is the North-Light truss. To being honest with you my friend, this is because of appropriate air flow that it provides, and also an additional reason for that is spread that it has 30 to 40-meter period.
As a result of its unequalled longevity as well as unbelievable versatility, these NorthLight Truss is generally utilized in the big rooms because it enables maximum light to get to the bigger spaces as contrasted to other trusses.
 Uses of Trusses.
All the Trusses out there are generally triangular systems which is adjoined with architectural elements, and this factor make them most commonly used for all the type of roofing support.
Steel roofing system trusses particularly and are carefullydesigned to provide a support with considerable amount weight for brief life span, which normally makes them excellent for all the sort of storage facilities roof, occasion sectors and also airplane garages, roofing system over the airport terminals, and also a few other largescale structures or job.
If you're considering steel trusses for your building, you'll possibly encounter the following terms. Here we have mentioned a few of the most effective steel roofing trusses as well as the use of that trusses.
 ·        Pratt (bridges, aircraft garages, long-span buildings).
·        North Light (industrial workshops).
·        Warren (gantry/crane girders, long-span structures).
·        Fink (homes).
·        Scissor (churches, galleries, houses).
·        Hip (locations with high winds and heavy snowfall).
·        Apartment (flat roof coverings of commercial buildings).

I don't have any facts today so I thought I'd ramble on about a bridges! (I've been thinking about them alot recently I don't know why)
But I'm specifically gonna talk about bridges in Australia bc it's so much easier for me to talk about Aus
The Sydney Harbour Bridge is the world's widest and tallest (but not longest) steel arch bridge.
The Prince Alfred Bridge was 922 metres (3,025 ft) when it was first built in 1867 (it was later closed over a century later in 1984) the bridge itself was made of wrought iron trusses and timber. Last year the bridge was demolished due to it being a risk to the community. (I actually got to witness it being taken down!!)
The longest bridge in Australia is the Macleay river bridge that stands at the length of 3200 m (10498.69ft)
-fact anon
oh wow, bridges scare me sm 😟 like i love lookin at the water but then my mind goes awry and i always imagine the bridge suddenly breaking down like in one of the final destination movies. (those movies have traumatized me for life, i still think of those and those are the reason i’m paranoid over simple things today)
i went on the longest bridge that i’ve ever been on in my life a few weeks ago, and i was getting rlly antsy, i couldn’t imagine being on one of the longest bridges.

Nikken Sekkei's Ariake Gymnastics Centre celebrates timber construction
One of the largest timber-framed roofs in the world spans 90 metres over the arena of the Ariake Gymnastics Centre in Tokyo, designed by Japanese practice Nikken Sekkei for the delayed 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The structure, located a short distance from Tokyo's centre in Koto City, was originally unveiled in 2019 and has been the location for artistic, rhythmic and trampoline gymnastics as well as the wheelchair sport Boccia.
The gymnastics centre is located next to a canal in Koto City
Located next to a canal on the site of a former timber storage area, the centre is a celebration of wood and its centrality to traditional Japanese architecture. Around 2,300 cubic metres of sustainable timber are used throughout the building.
"Based on the architectural concept of a wooden vessel floating in the bay area, timber is used wherever possible, specifically in the roof frame structure, facade, spectator seats and exterior walls, while carefully considering the characteristics of wood in each application," said Nikken Sekkei.
Steel columns support the timber concourse
From its base, the centre's inverted pyramid form sweeps upwards to shelter an external concourse below, expressing the shape of the raked seating within with a stepped cladding of horizontal timber planks.
Referencing a traditional engawa, a verandah-like space found in Japanese architecture, the concourse is defined by two rings of steel supports: one vertical surrounding the entrances in the centre and another angled supporting the edge of the roof structure.
Arch-shaped timber beams form the roof span
"By positioning the circulation concourse on the outside of the building and creating an open and broad approach space, the design attempts to avoid the impenetrable exterior typically found on large-scale sports facilities," explained the practice.
The roof structure is formed by a series of large, arch-shaped glue laminated timber beams made using larch from the Nagano and Hokkaido prefectures, spanning a distance of 90 metres between the steel columns of the centre.
"We adopted a simple structure that uses single members of large glue-laminated timber with high heat capacity, rather than trusses containing a number of small members to achieve both fire resistance performance and structural stability," Nikken Sekkei said.
Steel cables attached to this roof structure support the arena's lighting rig, above the glulam stands that can accommodate 12,000 spectators. This number will reduce when the temporary seating is removed following the 2020 Olympic Games.
A timber staircase leads to the seating area
A corrugated steel roof covers the structure, following the form of the timber beams below to create the arena's distinctive undulating roof shape.
The centrepiece of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, the Japan National Stadium by Kengo Kuma Associates with Taisei Corporation and Azusa Sekkei Co also incorporated an extensive use of timber, with its roof structure made from steel and laminated larch and cedar trusses.
Both of these structures and more featured in Dezeen's roundup of the most architecturally significant buildings in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, which took place during summer 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Residential Roof Truss Design
Roof trusses are an established structural design used to support buildings over a wide area of space. Trusses are made of wood, metal, concrete or a combination of these materials and have several main components such as joint angle, pole pieces, clevis rings and tiebacks. Often, timber roof trusses were used for hundreds of years to support roof and floor systems on commercial buildings. However, with changing building and construction techniques, truss designs have become increasingly less attractive to most building contractors due to the increased use of aluminum and steel.
For residential and light commercial structures, low-priced economical trusses can be selected using standard tongue-and-groove joinery method to avoid expensive framing materials. Low-priced roof trusses with standard tongue-and-groove joinery system usually include four clevis rings with two on each end and one crossbrace. Common types of timber trusses used in residential and light commercial structures include flat and sloping roof trusses and arched and convex roofs. Typically, arched roof truss is the more popular design type due to its ability to expand along the pitch direction.
The roof truss design is also very important for the structural stability of the building as it provides lateral, longitudinal and axial load bearing capabilities to the structure. Usually the maximum load-bearing design strength of residential construction is obtained with single-link timber trusses. This type of construction is found to be more reliable, long lasting and versatile than double-linked truss systems. Moreover, residential construction is not subjected to the harsh weather conditions like climatic, weathering, pressure and wind forces. Thus, more building owners and developers prefer to utilize this type of roof truss design in residential buildings.

Te Kura Whare

TE KURA WHARE:HEALING FROM WITHIN
“Te Kura Whare was created with the intention of restoring pride in the Tūhoe culture and the inherent connection of Tūhoe people to the land, or mana tangata. Te Kura Whare was to be much more than a building; it was to be an architectural representation of the Tūhoe people—their beliefs, traditions, culture, and history. The Tūhoe recognized that the Living Building Challenge could provide a framework to help actualize their intentions. Late architect Ivan Mercep embraced this approach, and his firm, Jasmax and the Tūhoe worked together on the design for several years before the project ever broke ground. This unique collaboration resulted in an exemplary biophilic project that incorporated cultural reverence, spirituality, and a deep respect for nature in every part of the design process.”
KO TE WHENUA TE TOTO O TE TANGATA: The land is the blood of the people
KO TE TANGATA TE KANOHI O TE WHENUA: The people are the face of the land
In Te Kura Whare, natural logs serve as posts, beams, and trusses, emulating the forest and reflecting the vital role trees play in the wellbeing of Tūhoe people. The columnar supports throughout the building are made from pine harvested from Kaingaroa forest, enhancing the cultural connection between the Tūhoe and the forests of the Tūhoe Rohe.
The distinctive wooden arch at the entrance to the Tribal Chamber simulates the flight path of Tama-nui-te-rā (sun) across the sky, from east to west.
Just as the sun streaming through the forest creates pockets of comfort and warmth, this building directs natural light in ways that promote an interplay of light and shadow. Tall, vertical bands of glazing allow light to penetrate the office wing atrium, creating an alternating pattern of light and dark suggestive of tree trunks in a forest.
Tūhoe identity and culture is inseparable from place and from the land … Te Kura Whare plays a key role in re-establishing the connection to the land and building pride in Maori culture and traditions.
INTEGRATION OF CULTURE AND ECOLOGY
Tu Kura Whare coexists in harmony with the surrounding environment. The project harnesses all of its power from the sun, captures all of its water from the sky and treats all of its waste on site. Tūhoe believe it is their responsibility to nurture, learn from and respect the land. Designing the building to the Living Building Challenge standard helped them create a building endowed with living systems—one that demonstrates the community’s values and beliefs.
SPIRIT OF PLACE
The simple materials palette creates a strong connection with the land and identifies the building uniquely within its place.
Not only did Tūhoe help design the building, they harvested the timbers, shaped the clay bricks, built the walls, and created the artworks that tell their stories and enhance the building.

Easy Ways to Identify a Building's Construction Kind
There are regional building designs which oppose this pattern, the rock roofings of the Alpine cabins being normally of gentler incline. These buildings often tend to gather a large amount of snow on them, which is seen as a consider their insulation. The pitch of the roofing is in part established by the roof covering material available, a pitch of 3/12 or higher slope generally being covered with asphalt roof shingles, timber shake, corrugated steel, slate or floor tile. Rock lintels have been made use of to sustain roofs since ancient times, yet can not bridge big ranges.

How do you determine construction type?
Sloping roofs come in many different varieties. The simplest is the lean-to, or shed, which has only one slope. A roof with two slopes that form an “A” or triangle is called a gable, or pitched, roof.
Then, determine the structure's fire-resistance score based on its weakest aspect. As an example, if a structure has a metal roofing, yet the exterior wall surfaces are constructed from wood, the fire ranking would be based upon wood because that's the weakest component. In that instance, the structure would be identified as a framework building with flammable aspects, which would certainly drop under ISO Class I or IBC Type V. The water warded off by the roofing system throughout a rainstorm is potentially destructive to the building that the roofing system safeguards.
What color roof should I get?
Arriving at an exact figure for new https://gunnerwwml509.home.blog/2020/01/09/modern-roofing-materials-things-to-know-before-you-get-this/ home costs per square foot might not be realistic, but getting a ballpark idea should be possible. To do this, take the total cost of your project, as outlined by your builder, and divide this number by the total number of square feet in your project.

Purchase your materials, http://revistas.unitau.br/ojs/index.php/humanas/user/viewPublicProfile/749307 including prefabricated trusses, plywood covering, as well as roofing system floor tiles. To begin check here building and construction, install the trusses, beginning with completion trusses. After that, cover the roof with wood, install the padding, and also coating by adding the floor tiles. If any hefty branches are liable to come down on it, building a roof under an old tree might not be optimal.
What is the cheapest roofing material?
Both the gablet roof and the half-hipped roof are intermediate between the gabled and fully hipped types: the gablet roof has a gable above a hip, while a half-hipped roof has a hip above a gable. Half-hipped roofs are very common in England, Denmark, Germany and especially in Austria and Slovenia.
With the development of block as well as cut rock for building, the basic roofing types of the dome and also safe showed up.
The roofing system of a garden conservatory shields plants from cold, wind, as well as rain, however confesses light.
Although modern-day building and construction components such as drains might get rid of the need for pitch, roofs are pitched for factors of tradition as well as aesthetic appeals.
Some roofing systems follow organic shapes, either by architectural design or since an adaptable material such as thatch has been made use of in the building and construction.
Drain is an additional point to consider, due to the fact that roofs must be equipped with a means to drain rainfall, as well as you do not desire the run-off running right into your backyard or a next-door neighbor's backyard. If you reside in a neighborhood where your houses are developed close with each other, you might require to construct a roofing with a smaller sized eave than you would certainly or else.
When You Need a New Roof Covering, exactly how to Inform.
What type of roofing lasts the longest?

The easiest way to define a Type II building is that is has the same structural characteristics as a Type I in that it is non-combustible construction. The major difference is that it is not protected. A rule of thumb is typically a Type II building will have rating requirements of one hour or less.
Despite the sort of roof you want to develop, security needs to always be a concern, as roof covering job can be hazardous, and loss devices ought to always be made use of. To determine a structure's construction kind, start by determining the building elements, or the materials that were used in its construction.
What is the average roof pitch?
Earth-moving machinery Earth-moving machines that are used in construction work and in road-building include tractor-dozers (bulldozers), loaders, backhoe loaders (figure 2), hydraulic excavators, dumpers, tractor-scrapers, graders, pipelayers, trenchers, landfill compactors and rope excavators.
The rock arch came into substantial usage in the ancient Roman period and also in alternative types might be utilized to extend areas approximately 140 feet (43 m) throughout. The standard forms of roof coverings are flat,mono-pitched, gabled, hipped, butterfly, arched and also domed. If the angle exceeds 10 levels), roofs built of flat areas that are sloped are referred to as pitched roofings (typically.
