Haurchefant POV!
:3c
As this writing takes place in Heavensward, Rifra will be referred to as Seren!
Haurchefant only had a split second to react.
This was supposed to be a mission to rescue Aymeric after he was falsely imprisoned by the Holy See, by his own father Archbishop Thordan VII. Estinien, Lucia, and her squadron of Temple Knights invaded the Vault to rescue the Lord Commander while he, Alphinaud, Banneret, and the Warrior of Light Seren went to confront Thordan themselves. Now that they knew the truth behind the millennia-long conflict that was the Dragonsong War, they had to do what was right and confront the one who kept perpetrating the lie.
Yet Thordan refused to listen, stepping onto the airship as one of the Heaven's Ward escorted him. Seren yelled after him, calling him a coward for leaving, running across the bridge to chase him. Had nothing else happen, perhaps she would have been able to reach Thordan, tackling him down and beating him and the Heaven's Ward senseless even in their primal forms. Perhaps Thordan would have relented, accepting his defeat right then and there. But instead a bright light appeared at the corner of Haurchefant's vision. The primal form of Ser Zephirin had charged some sort of lance made of light and was aiming it at the viera, who was completely unaware.
He had to do something.
The elezen warned Seren, sprinting as fast as he could as he drew his shield to block the attack. He planted his feet onto the ground, pushing against the lance of light with all of his strength, fighting to keep the attack at bay.
Crack.
Haurchefant kept his stance, bringing his other arm to support his shield as he continued to defend against the assault. The woman he was protecting was the Warrior of Light, the one who offered herself to assist them against heretical activities despite Ishgard's isolationist approaches. She even came to their aid when Dravanians tried to invade his home at the Steps of Faith. There was so much he was grateful for, and he was not letting her die until he paid his gratitude in kind.
Crack.
And Seren was his ward, a request accepted by his father Lord Fortemps. He had offered her, Alphinaud, and Tataru shelter until their names were cleared from the Bloody Banquet at Ul'dah, one of many ways he had intended to show them his thanks. If she was to die here, then he would have failed his mission.
He heard the sound of his shield getting pierced through as a burning sensation wracked his stomach.
Haurchefant could taste his own blood in his mouth as Seren screamed his name, collapsing in front of her as Thordan nonchalantly boarded his airship. Alphinaud ran to his side, quickly applying his healing magic, yet the pain refused to subside. Ishgard was a cold land, yet it seemed to get even colder as the seconds passed by.
"You..." Haurchefant muttered, turning towards where he thought Seren was. "You are unharmed? Forgive me... I could not bear the thought of... of..."
He felt a warmth in his hand, his gray eyes tracing its path to meet Rifra's teary green. She was holding his hand tightly, pleading for him to live, shouting at Alphinaud to apply as much magic as he could because by the Twelve he was not going to die there.
Ah... The Warrior of Light truly had a heart too big for her own good. Many refused to acknowledge Haurchefant properly even after he had achieved knighthood, having been born a bastard to Lord Fortemps. Being "impure" meant that he had to work twice as hard as everyone else to get even a little bit of recognition, even if it meant that he had to appeal to outsider help in order to protect the land he called home. Seren didn't care for any of that, her opinion of him unwavering even as it was revealed that he was a bastard. She continued to aid him and Ishgard, even traveling to Dravanian lands in hopes of establishing peace with dragonkind. She didn't have to do any of that; she was his ward, after all.
Haurchefant smiled weakly at the viera, strength leaving his limbs. If anyone could change Ishgard for the better, change the world even, it would be her, and he was more than happy to sacrifice his own life for hers, a fire that burned so fiercely amongst this frigid wasteland.
"Oh, do not look at me so..."
His debt to her was paid in full.
"A smile better suits a hero..."

4 // off the hook
“Well, take it. I don’t have all day, kupo.”
Sawyer was jarred from her momentary fixation on the wax seal as the letter was foisted into her hand. She offered a muted thanks to the postmoogle, whose cap was politely tilted before he fluttered off with his comically large bag in tow. For some reason it occurred to her to check the plaza before she turned to make a swift stride for the privacy of the inn room, and though she didn’t see any overly suspicious onlookers, she felt compelled to hold the letter against her middle, hiding the seal from view.
She’d always dreaded this day. She knew it would only be a matter of time, but as all pasts do, hers was catching up with her in a moment where it had scarcely crossed her mind in moons. Hoping she’d simply mistaken the seal for another, she folded the letter back just enough to peek at it again. Familiar heraldry pressed into blue wax and brushed with gold paint caused the dread in her chest to rise into her throat as bile.
The Supreme Sacred Tribunal of Halonic Inquisitory Doctrine sends its regards.
The door behind her was closed abruptly, and now in the safety of her inn room, she tore through the seal with an urgency that would be unbecoming of her in any other setting, and it was only now that she realized her hands were shaking as she held the letter still enough to skim. Her eyes darted around the page, searching for alarming words or phrases—summons to appear before the Tribunal for inquest or a polite request that she surrender herself for gaol so that they wouldn’t have to send the Inquisition to retrieve her personally.
It was only when she did not see such demands that she finally read the letter in full.
To one Miss Sawyer Reeves, It was in pursuit of Her Holiest Ideals and the preservation of Decency, Justice, and Dignity that the Inquisition didst carry out the will of the Fury to what ends were deemed necessary to protect the Sanctity of Ishgard and her Peoples, but with such Revelations as were made known after the death of His Eminence, Archbishop Thordan VII, Reform and Restitution to what extent we are able have thus become the preeminent duty of The Supreme Sacred Tribunal of Halonic Inquisitory Doctrine and its constituents (henceforth referred to as “The Tribunal”). This correspondence has been sent to all parties of ongoing Investigations, Trials, and Inquisition of claims to Heretical Activity that have yet to be concluded, do not have sufficient evidence of such, or wherein interruptions did not allow the Tribunal to function as an extension of the Fury’s judgment in a fair and impartial Trial or did not allow a challenge to Trial by Combat to conclude with a victor on Record. As such, your challenge to Trial by Combat issued to ███████ ███████ on the grounds that he partook of Heretical Activity has been annulled and the charges leveled against Ser ███████ have been dropped from the Official Record, despite the inconclusive results after your unsanctioned withdrawal from the Tribunal arena. Though we believe your unsanctioned withdrawal to have been born of brazen cowardice and remains a slight against the Fury’s divine will, the Tribunal no longer wields Her judgment in the matter. As such, the trial record has been amended to have no conclusive victor and your criminal history has been expunged in the eyes of the Holy See of Ishgard and all official bodies therein. No further Investigation into your original claim will take place, and your status as a fugitive from the Inquisition has been annulled. Your previous standing as a ward of House Haillenarte has not been reinstated on the grounds that such patronage is only within the purview of the Lord or Lady of the House to grant, and will require correspondence with said Lord or Lady to reclaim. You are free to return to Ishgard without fear of repercussion, however we advise you to be minded of this most benevolent allowance and act with requisite decorum should you choose to return. Fury have Mercy upon your soul. - Auphent Gauvane Clerk of the Supreme Sacred Tribunal of Halonic Inquisitory Doctrine Records Office
Sawyer took a moment to breathe. Then another.
The fluster to get inside the door and the following silence roused curiosity from the raen that resided with her in the inn room, a pair of scaled arms winding around the hyur’s waist. “Hawk?” she called, wary and concerned.
“It’s… a letter from Ishgard. From home,” Sawyer admitted, though she wasn’t prepared for her voice to break over the final word as it did. She drew a shaking breath, then wrapped her arms around Amesha fully. “They’ll allow me to return without consequence. I am a free woman, but…”
“But…?” Amesha prompted her to continue.
Sawyer whispered. “Why am I terrified?”

FFXIVWrite2024 | #12 - Quarry
Rating: G
Leather Bridle catches a chocobo.
—————
Leather Bridle knew everything there was to know about chocobo hunting. She had never actually caught a chocobo, but if learning letters and numbers and when Archbishop Thordan VII ascended the Holy See counted as knowing things, then surely listening to tales around the dinner table and cleaning the equipment for chores counted too. So she felt perfectly prepared when it was time to go along on a real hunt for the first time.
There were different types of traps for different chocobos. Leather was assigned a fairly simple trap that a particularly smart or strong chocobo would easily escape, so she hopefully wouldn’t have to deal with a difficult bird. She hitched the wagon for her chocobo Tango to pull on the first trip. They travelled with the small group of hunters deep into the forest, and Leather picked out a location for the trap. She unhitched it from Tango, placed some gysahl greens in a tempting location, and rigged the door to swing closed behind her quarry.
The next day, Leather and the other hunters returned to check their traps. Sure enough, Leather’s trap had captured a bright yellow bird. It kwehed in frustration as the hunters approached, but as trapped animals went it didn’t seem particularly angry. That was good, it would be easier to sell as a riding bird. Leather hitched the wagon trap back up to Tango and rode back into town triumphant. She had demonstrated she could successfully catch a chocobo! Now all that was left was to sell it at auction and she would see her first profit.

Without delay I made my way for the first time to the Vault. Perhaps the only time I would enter her hallowed halls without bloodshed. I held my surprise at Aymeric's presence, and walked proud as he announced me to the Archbishop.
Your Eminence, it is my honour to present to you the Warrior of Light.
I have heard the tales of your many grand endeavours. The lord commander has also been most effusive in his praise. I am Thordan VII, Archbishop of the Ishgardian Orthodox Church, and I bade you come here that I might offer my personal apologies. You will forgive me for not calling upon you as courtesy would dictate, but as you can see, my more sprightly days are long behind me. But I digress.
Your companions were wrongly accused of heresy and subjected to gross indignities. This, I am sorry to say, was the result of negligence on the part of our nation's protectors─negligence born of an excess of zeal. Is that not so, Ser Zephirin?
Yes, Your Eminence... Regrettably, it would appear that we of the Heavens' Ward were in receipt of erroneous information. Ser Grinnaux has ever been headstrong. He pressed charges before the truth had been ascertained, for which I most sincerely apologize.
An unfortunate misunderstanding born of an earnest desire to serve Ishgard─but one which should never have occurred... For who could doubt the character of those who bested Shiva and drove the Horde from the Steps of Faith? Not I, that much is certain. That will be all, Ser Zephirin. I would speak with our guest in private.
Your Eminence? I─ As you wish, Your Eminence. That will be all for today!
The way Aymeric looked at me as he was forced to leave, I knew immediately one thing: he did not trust this man. Every defence I possessed was raised, but the question lingered in my mind..."Why?"

dawntrail impressions pt. xii
In this installment: the sins of a people and—what's this? A mother who's not dead in FFXIV????
Spoilers below the cut, as always:
I'm being a little cavalier about the whole mothers thing but if you really think about it, fathers (or grandfathers) play pretty significant roles throughout all the expansions. There's:
Louisoix, who kicked the whole thing off in ARR;
Heavensward which was almost completely about fathers: Count Edmont de Fortemps' and his foil Archbishop Thordan VII, with one dedicated to bettering Ishgard's future alongside his sons and the other dedicated to preserving Ishgard's past in direct conflict against his son, and Midgardsormr—the father of all dragons—giving his children wake-up calls;
Lyse's relationship with her father helping her understand the Ala Mhigan spirit of resistance better, Gosetsu's adoption of the amnesiac Yotsuyu because of how she reminded him of his dearly departed daughter, and Jenomis cen Lexentale's obsession with Ivalice impacting his children in Stormblood;
the Crystal Exarch and his granddaughter Lyna, Gaius and his adopted children, and that one questline about the young woman on the trail of her father who'd committed suicide in Shadowbringers;
Fourchenault's entire fucking deal in Endwalker;
and finally the well-meaning and doting father Gulool Ja Ja, the father who gave up all rights to that title Hunmu Rruk, and the asshole dad Zereel Ja in Dawntrail.
There's a lot to be said about (grand)fathers in each expansion like I've highlighted above, but very little about (grand)mothers. We don't know jack about Louisoix's wife. The only thing we know about Count Edmont de Fortemps' wife is that she's dead and hated Haurchefant. We don't know anything about Aymeric's mother. Presumably Curtis Hext's wife is dead just like Gosetsu's is, but we don't know anything about her in the context of the resistance against the Empire (unlike Gosetsu and Jenomis' wives whose only role is to be their Lost Lenores). Even in Dawntrail there isn't any mention of Gulool Ja Ja or Hunmu Rruk's wives; maybe Mamool Ja can reproduce asexually so there's no need for a wife in Gulool Ja Ja's case, but surely Wuk Lamat would have a mother?
It's why Miilal Ja is such an interesting character to me; living mothers are very rare in FFXIV, and she's not like the typical living mothers we've seen so far either. Barring Athena, F'lhaminn (as per my knowledge of her from 2.0 onwards), Dulia-Chai and Ameliance are all loving mothers who are in relatively good places—F'lhaminn is supported by the Scions, and Dulia-Chai and Ameliance are rich with loving husbands—while Miilal Ja is living in an abusive society (more on that later) with a very clearly abusive spouse. It makes her taking the initiative to reach out to Wuk Lamat and ultimately reveal the darkness behind Mamook all the more meaningful—it's easy to take action when you're a woman of action (F'lhaminn) or in a position of power and privilege (Dulia-Chai and Ameliance), not so much when you're beaten and downtrodden like Miilal Ja.
———
Bakool Ja Ja the Mighty: "...What, couldn't wait to laugh at the failure?"
It's not an uncommon shōnen trope, the secretly-insecure braggart who blusters and boasts and bullies his way to hide and overcompensate for his perceived failings, who's later revealed to be facing intense pressure and abuse from a domineering patriarch. It doesn't excuse everything he's done, but among the four claimants it makes him a far more relatable character than the others—even (especially) stock shōnen hero Wuk Lamat. It's easy to dismiss this line as part of his egotism, but this is simply a boy hiding away and licking his wounds after failing to do the one thing he's supposedly good for. Maybe it's just my own experiences, but it's hard not to relate to that or at least feel a little sorry for him—especially after Zereel Ja's very public display earlier.
———
Miilal Ja: "The Third Promise seeks to learn about Mamook. She may be our chance to finally end what we have been powerless to stop."
Miilal Ja: "Talk with her. Tell her...what we have done."
And now we come to the truth of the matter: the darkness within Mamook's heart.
———
Bakool Ja Ja the Mighty: "Fine. Perhaps it's only right that we be the ones to speak of it. "Blessed" as we are..."
Bakool Ja Ja the Mystic: "Do you know how blessed siblings are made?"
Krile: "I heard that they are born to Hoobigo and Boonewa parents."
Bakool Ja Ja the Mystic: "Such unions between clans were originally arranged to stop infighting. The war between the Xbr'aal was going poorly, and we needed to be united."
Bakool Ja Ja the Mystic: "Then one day, a child was born. One blessed with two heads...and tremendous power."
Bakool Ja Ja the Mighty: "When this child grew old enough to lead our army, we became unstoppable. The Xbr'aal had no answer, and we drove them all the way back to the trees above."
Bakool Ja Ja the Mighty: "That taste of victory awakened our greed. We became obsessed with conceiving more and more of these superior children. No matter the cost..."
Bakool Ja Ja the Mighty: "Of the countless born, most die...trapped in their shells."
Bakool Ja Ja the Mystic: "Only one in a hundred survive."
Remember what I said earlier about how it's all the more meaningful that Miilal Ja is the one who takes the initiative to bring Wuk Lamat into the fold, in hopes of ending that which they "have been powerless to stop"? Even this shows her limits—as the Autarch's wife, as the one who gave birth to the blessed siblings Bakool Ja Ja, not only she would have not been exempt from having to conceive as many children as she could in hopes of one of the children being a two-headed Mamool Ja, she would have been expected to contribute the most. We don't know if the Autarch's wife plays a role within Mamook society—if she was seen as a guiding matriarch for the womenfolk—but if she did, she would have not been able to console those grieving for their lost children, or defend those suffering from what is essentially sexual slavery.
Because that's one thing that I don't see people talk about when it comes to this particular revelation/plot point—it's sad and tragic that so many children are conceived and die in their shells, essentially stillborn, but nobody talks about what it does to the men and women involved. If we're going by the idea that Mamool Ja can reproduce asexually, that might not have been an issue but! Blessed siblings are explicitly said to be born from the union of Hoobigo and Boonewa parents, therefore it's unlikely for them to come from asexual reproduction, which means sex is involved, and treating the men and women of Mamook as a never-ending baby factory is no different than subjecting them to sexual slavery.
Miilal Ja is so tied to this pervasive cycle herself, it's to the point where it's not she who reveals the darkness within Mamook's heart to our heroes—it's Bakool Ja Ja who's telling this story. And yet she's the one who reaches out to Wuk Lamat and acts as the bridge between her and Bakool Ja Ja—the hope of Mamook. Without her, there could be no reconciliation. There could be no hope for Mamook.
And it all began with the words of a weary, downtrodden mother and wife. That means a lot, I think.
———
Bakool Ja Ja the Mighty: "If we are "blessed," it is only because we yet live. Unlike our brothers and sisters who were sacrificed for the glory of Mamook."
Bakool Ja Ja the Mighty: "Of course it's horrible! It's an atrocity we can never take back!"
Bakool Ja Ja the Mighty: "Those children died so that we could live! So we had to succeed, no matter what! To fail would mean it was all for nothing! ...Nothing!"
Bakool Ja Ja the Mighty: "...But I did fail. I squandered their sacrifice."
And there we have it. It's not just pressure from the overbearing, domineering, abusive patriarch—it's the weight of all the dead children before him, born to die for the sake of Mamook's glory, so heavy on his shoulders to the point where he's internalised the sins of Mamook as his own.
———
What will you say? > I sympathize with your pain, but... > Don't use them as an excuse.
There comes a point where as much as I enjoy seeing my Warrior of Light take center stage, I don't really like how the game shoehorns the Warrior into reacting in situations that don't involve them. Dawntrail has several of these instances, and they're all the more aggravating considering Wuk Lamat is supposed to the main character—so why is the Warrior of Light chiming in when it doesn't involve them? Remember, the Warrior of Light is only acting as a mentor, an outsider providing a third perspective, a neutral party there to assist their chosen claimant. They're not here to judge, what the heck.
———
Bakool Ja Ja the Mighty: "I...I should never have been born."
Now that's just fucking sad, man.
———
Of course, since Dawntrail is basically the shōnen manga/JRPG tropes expansion, we can't have a scene between the stock shōnen hero and her bully of a rival without a rousing speech from the hero!
Wuk Lamat: "You're wrong."
Wuk Lamat: "You didn't ask to be born as you are, and—you aren't responsible for your siblings' deaths."
Wuk Lamat: "The people obsessed with blessed siblings are. They made their choices...but they don't make yours!"
Wuk Lamat: "Since when do you let others push you around, Bakool Ja Ja? What do you want? Say it!"
Bakool Ja Ja the Mighty: "I...want it to end."
Bakool Ja Ja the Mighty: "I don't want any more to die."
Wuk Lamat: "Then you have my word. We'll put a stop to this madness."
———
Can't forget the bully turning over a new leaf and apologising...
Bakool Ja Ja the Mighty: "I'm sorry. For what I've said...and done. I don't expect your forgiveness."
Wuk Lamat: "You had your reasons. I'm glad I could know them."
...and a heart-warming scene of the two putting aside their differences to work together for the betterment of all.
———
Aaaaaand finally the stock shōnen hero derails the tension with a cheeky, juvenile joke—that's always a classic!
Wuk Lamat: "Which is to say...you're not a complete alpaca's ass."
(sighs)
I have Thoughts™ about this whole plot point, most of which I've outlined re: Miilal Ja and the inherent sexual horror of Mamook's obsession with the blessed siblings, but also I know, I know the premise of so many stillborn children being birthed to the point where it's said to be countless is supposed to be horrifying in itself, but a good degree of that horror is diluted by the sheer fact that the Mamool Ja are, well, non-human. They're very distinctly reptilian-coded, they would have been (and were!) known as beastmen before FFXIV did away with that terminology, Bakool Ja Ja states that the infants die in their shells which means they're born from eggs... and I get that a life in an egg is a life regardless but people don't really think of eggs that way! You don't feel sad when you see a smashed bird egg, or mourn the loss of potential life in that egg. Yes, it's very likely Mamool Ja eggs don't quite work that way but it doesn't really register; there's so much distance from the reality of that horror that it doesn't really sink in. We know so little about how Mamool Ja reproduce and procreate and the exact circumstances surrounding a Mamool Ja's birth—do they lay eggs? do the women keep the eggs within them until the embryo inside reaches infancy like a pregnancy, or do the eggs mature outside the mother? is laying an egg as painful a process as giving birth?—to the point where that horror doesn't really connect for us. I can't help but wonder why they made this a plot point with the Mamool Ja—was it a clever way to create conflict around the existence of two-headed Mamool Ja, or was it because if we applied this same concept to a more mammalian or human-like race, it'd be a thousand degrees more traumatising? Imagine women constantly getting pregnant and giving birth to stillborn babies, again and again and again and again—
It's the stuff nightmares are made of.
I'd usually say I'm happy to hear your thoughts on this matter, but 1) I'm STILL at level 95 MSQ so would appreciate no spoilers regarding the Mamool Ja since I know we learn a little more about them in the later stages of the MSQ; and 2) it's frankly too disturbing to think about.

Augustine Bishop and Mathye Bishop, Dominants of Halone
When your goddess just has enough of the bullshit and decides 'you know what, fuck you.'
-----
Augustine Bishop (nee Seymour) and Mathye Bishop, duel Dominants of Halone. While normally Halone manifests in the Archbishop upon their ascension, she did not appear when Thordan VII took the papal throne. Instead she appeared years later--manifesting first in Augustine in her aspect as the goddess of War, and then in Augustine's older half-brother, Mathye, in her long-forgotten aspect as the goddess of Ice, the Glaicer-Breaker. This event, along with one of Ishgard's greatest heroes being chosen as a Dominant of the First Brood, was enough to trigger a ceasefire between Coerthas and the dragons of Dravania.
By the time Riven arrives, Coerthas--and it's capital city of Ishgard-is struggling to deal with the rapid-fire changes to it's way of life and society that the ceasefire has brought. Augustine and Mathye have unwillingly become the faces of progressive reform for Coerthas, and there are many of the old guard that would rather set the country aflame than rather see change...

if chambord had a tumblr her posts would unfortunately be like this:
i want to study at the ishgardian scholasticate
i will say “by the fury” and season everything with salt. i’ll attend mass at a cathedral and grab a pint at the forgotten knight. i will eat trapper’s quiche every day for 376 gil. i would marry into nobility and have affairs with the housemaids every night. i am also more likely to meet brume rats, The Heaven’s Ward, Jannequinard, and Archbishop Thordan VII
i wish i was ishgardian 🥺

Junelezen Day 18: Landscape
"And so they came, at a friend's behest. To Ishgard, shining city on the mount, overlooking the dominion of Coerthas... A great and proud nation devoted to Halone, the Fury, ruled by Thordan VII, Archbishop of the Ishgardian Orthodox Church... The last bastion of the Faith, her walls ever bristling with the sworn swords and spears of her four High Houses... A land that after a thousand years of war had forgotten what it was to be at peace" -Excerpt from the memoirs of Count Edmont de Fortemps Heavensward
i know i already did a haurchefant themed thing for the day 1 pompt. but i couldn't not go to my favourite location in all of coerthas for this one.
