Here have this Apex thing I forgot about.

I’ve gone down the Apex lore and characterization rabbit hole, so here we go:

Staff Sergeant Anita Williams was a woman driven by reason.

She had her reasons for joining the IMC— despite the fact that she despised the top-brass.

She had her reasons for ignoring every time the Militia tried to get IMC soldiers to desert.

She had her reasons for competing in the Apex Games.

But there were always complications, both welcome and not.

The fact that she couldn’t not smile every time Witt made an ass of himself for everyone’s entertainment? Welcome.

The fact that she could never pass up a drink with Gibraltar and Parekh? Welcome.

The fact that she couldn’t seem to think straight every time Loba was mentioned, let alone near her? Confusing as all hell but damn if it wasn’t welcome.

She refused to delve into the fact that she couldn’t seem to refer to Loba by her last name no matter how hard she tried.

What wasn’t welcome in any way, shape or form, was the fact that she couldn’t find a goddamn reason for why she got so spectacularly angry—for that’s the only word that could possibly describe what she felt, right?—anytime the new girl was with Loba.

What was her name? Kyeree? Kairi? Yeah, that was it. Kairi. Kairi Imahara. Callsign: Valkyrie.

She was a walking contradiction.

All confidence and self-assurance, bordering on arrogance.

Yet Valkyrie could also be soft spoken and caring, relatable in a way Anita wasn’t quite sure certain others could be.

Bangalore heard the distinct sound of Bloodhound’s modulated voice as she finished examining the pile of gear she’d stumbled onto and quickly shouldered her ‘301. Usually if someone caught the legendary Bloodhound alone, they liked to gloat about it. The Hound indulged them- because they knew their teammates were just around the corner.

“-ou ok, Bloodhound?”

That wasn’t the voice of Crypto, their other teammate. Bangalore pressed herself against the boulder she was next to, listening.

“You did not press your advantage, young Valkyrie, why?”

Valkyrie. The new girl. Bangalore ignored the odd thud in her chest.

“Because I can tell something’s bothering you. I like my enemies at their best.”

Bloodhound snorted.

“A rather arrogant statement, but your instincts have not failed you in this regard.”

Valkyrie made a non-committal noise. “So, are you ok, Hound?”

Bloodhound sighed, and Bangalore furrowed her brows. Usually the hunter would’ve put an end to this by now. “No, young warrior, I suppose not.”

“What’s goin’ on?”

“It… gives me pause, watching my home crumble before my eyes and feeling it shatter beneath my boots.”

“The ‘Edge is your home.” Valkyrie’s voice was quieter now.

“As the All-Father willed it, indeed.”

Bangalore peered around the corner, and her eyes widened at the sight before her.

Bloodhound was stood at the edge of a cliff-face, gloved hands resting at their sides, but not resting on their weapons.

What really surprised her, was how close Valkyrie was to the hunter. Just behind them, a little to their left. An advantageous position, and yet she didn’t take that advantage.

And then the Winged Avenger laid a gentle hand on the Technological Tracker’s shoulder, and spoke softly. “You didn’t fail them, Hound. Whoever they were.”

“Your instincts are correct yet again, Valkyrie.”

“So are yours, Bloodhound.”

And with that, Valkyrie stepped back, and rocketed into the sky.

And that was the first inkling that Anita got that Valkyrie and Kairi were not one-in-the-same.

After that, the Professional Soldier had been curious. Maybe the scene she’d witnessed had been a fluke? So she’d asked around.

“Hey, Park, got a question for you.”

Tae Joon Park, aka Crypto, looked up from his screen when Anita approached, curious.

“Yes, Anita, how can I help?”

Anita had always liked Tae, though they were never very close. He was helpful, polite, and mindful of others’ space. Though he was definitely a little quiet, not that she could blame him.

“What’s the story on the new girl?”

“Valkyrie? Why?”

“Just curious, honestly.” And it was actually the truth. “Wondering what other people’s experiences have been with her.”

“I don’t know much, to be honest. I hear she’s the daughter of an Apex Predator.”

“And here I thought she was just cocky enough to rock the Apex sigil in three separate places on her rig.” Anita huffed.

Park raised his eyebrows. “Observant, are we?”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

Crypto just smirked.

Crypto hadn’t been much help, so Bangalore went down her mental list of those she considered competent enough to be worthy of talking to about this specific topic.

So, essentially all the Legends but Silva, Natalie and Pathfinder.

Silva, he just…. Anita could never get him to focus long enough to be useful.

And no offense to Natalie or Path, but they weren’t too good with social situations, so they weren’t useful in this instance.

Ramya Parekh, callsign Rampart, spat out a sting of swears as she removed herself from the monstrosity of machinery she was buried in and hit her head in the process.

Anita let out a noise of amusement. “Need a medic?”

“We deal with worse on a daily basis.” Ramya replied, hopping up to sit on one of the crates scattered haphazardly about her workshop.
