The Arcana skins all have gorgeous splash arts - they all have that sumptuous gold-and-red decorativism, the opulence of fashion, the heavy use of geometry and symmetry, but… this is the best one. 

Beauty here is in part in the colors - red and gold is a classic for a reason - but much more so in the use and breaking of symmetry. The image as a whole is essentially perfectly symmetrical - Tahm Kench is centered, his features are equal between both sides, the decorations and ornamentation is mirrored side to side, even the banners and pillars in the deep background are symmetrical.

But then, the first thing you’re likely to notice breaking the symmetry is that trail snaking its way out of his mouth. Even that, though, isn’t breaking it as much as you think - look at the two major curving swirls of it on each side - symmetrical in height and similar in curve. But that trail is also striking in another way - inside it you can glimpse this entirely other world, and the trail is rendered almost completely flat, two dimensionally, like glass or the surface of a liquid, like a window to somewhere else.

Kench here is designed more like a classic demon than he ever has been, so between his rich gold adornments, that welcoming arms-out pose and world spilling out of his mouth, the trail does storytelling. You can see him telling sweet little lies, you can see him putting out that temptation, and with its curling, curving shape, it also looks like a path, that leads you directly into his open mouth.

Symmetry is broken in other places too - his hands and arms aren’t quite symmetrical in their gesture, there’s a crown in the upper right corner that isn’t on the left, the coat is torn in different places, even down to the tiny details like the metal teeth being symmetrical but the fleshy ones are not, a bump on his jowl on one side and not the other… and it’s that variation that prevents the image from feeling stale or flat.

Let me demonstrate - here’s a version of the image copied perfectly left to right.

It still works, but it also… lacks a bit of dynamism, it looks more static, less alive, and a little bit uncanny, not in a good way. It looks fake, somehow. It is, ironically, the asymmetries that makes the symmetry striking. And the imagery in this splash art is just spectacular - it’s a cool demonic detail that Kench here has a burning crown that hovers over the open pit of his skill, but look how the inside of it is rendered - there is almost a cosmos in there, and between that and the golden furnace in his mouth you get the sense that you’re looking at something which is only wearing a physical form. 

And the split between the biological and the constructed is also interesting here. Compare the treated leather surface of the headpiece to the fleshy bulbousness of the jaw and belly, compare the knobbly surface of the horns to the smooth and carefully carved metal of the golden ornamentation. This contrast is achieved with careful rendering and a real and deep understanding of how each surface reflects and interacts with light, and that understanding is on display again in the fingers, which glow in the way that flesh does when you press a powerful light against it. So if you look close you can see the thickness of the nail absorbing the light, bending it around its outside edges, you can see the ridges of a fingerprint on his thumb backlit from the inside.

There is a lot of absolutely gorgeous art in League of Legends, but I can honestly say that no piece of art in the game has made stop in my tracks, has surprised me, and rewarded me for paying attention to its smaller details, quite like Arcana Tahm Kench. The intentional manipulation of symmetry and asymmetry, the careful use of texture and reflection, the command of light and the sense of volume and construction… it’s gorgeous. I won’t argue that Tahm Kench is prettier than Coven Evelynn, but my experience with this piece of art… that’s where I see the beauty.

My ROTTMNT Ocs Part 1/?

Meet Capella. The cosmic horror space puppy

Note: This is part of a fic I am writing which will come out when I feel like it. Vague details are given as to not spoil anything

Design notes

I was inspired by Arcana Tahm Kench which is where the hollow head and no eyes come from. I then combined that piece with the fluffyness of Willump

The empty head also serves the purpose of allowing his companion and best friend, Constance (will do a full post about him when I feel like), to see the stars

Constance climbs onto Capella's back and dunks his head into the puppy's hollow void where it can display different stars across the universe

Yes it can zoom in. Constance is on track to becoming an Astronomy Prodigy thanks to his Space Puppy

Capella is giant. 8'4 or 256 Cm

Its tail trails into stardust. Just hard to recreate to effect with ballpoint pen -_-

Note all its fluff and softness. Has the cuddle potential of over 9000

Story

Capella fell from the sky onto the earth eons ago and laid in deep slumber for millions of years. His resting place then became part of the Hidden City. He was awoken when the Kraang invaded and was captured by a band of animal smugglers.

Why couldn't Capella just, universe its way out of that? It has no memory of how it got to Earth. It doesn't know how to access its inner power. So even though Capella can theoretically swallow a planet, it doesn't know how.

With the help of Constance and the Hamato Clan, it escapes and befriends the little boy. Together, they study the stars and explore Capella's hidden potential. And after a series of events, they become intertwined with the trouble hiding in the shadows of New York and the Hidden City.

Donnie quickly becomes friends with Constance and Capella over their shared love of science. After seeing Constance's star maps, notes, calculations, and theories that he made after meeting the space puppy, Donnie realized that he is a force to be reckoned with. It also feels nice knowing there's someone else who blends magic and science together

Capella hates Leo. In the same way Mayhem hates Raph. The first time Leo leaped onto its back to feel its fur, Capella growled and scared Leo off. Of course, Leo still tries to get on the space puppy's good side. With the only result being when he offers it its favorite food, chocolate rabbits.

Mikey and Capella are homies. Bros. Gal pals. Mikey has given Capella fancy nail art on its claws that always manages to come off a few hours later. One time when he was playing a game in the arcade Constance and Capella stood behind and watched. But when the soundtrack started going off they discovered something incredible. Capella can dance. Now they all meet up to have some awesome dance parties on empty roofs

Unlike Mayhem, Capella ADORES Raph. It will lunge at him at first sight and lick his face. He and Capella are the definition of the "I've only had ____ for one day. But if anything were to happen to them I would kill everyone in this room and then myself" meme. Constance introduced Raph to their version of fetch. Instead of using a ball, they use a bigass Dear skull Constance found during a summer camp. Raph will go on runs with Capella and will race him. He’s so happy there’s a pet that likes him.

April’s only rule is that Capella is banned from her apartment. Other than that she loves it to death. Mayhem however is super SCARED of Capella. It will run or teleport away whenever it sees the space puppy. Which is good because Capella always wants to chase Mayhem around.

Splinter is not a big fan of Capella, he thinks it causes too many problems in the lair. But Draxum loves it. He only shows it in small ways; lightly petting its soft fur, giving it bites of his food, and making chew toys with the help of Donnie. If someone were to ask Draxum if he has a favorite, he always says the dog.

Casey Jr was scared of it at first, but after some time he has grown to love it. If the Jones’ are in the lair with Constance and Capella, you will see Cassandra attached to one of the space puppy’s limbs. Will she let go? No one has ever seen her let go willingly.

What are the other Arcana like, towards Arcana Xerath?

Sadly this is a difficult question to answer, as the Arcana universe isn't really fleshed out much at all and none of the skins have alt voice lines I'm aware of. Just based on the character descriptions, though, I can give my best guesses.

I assume Camille probably doesn't view Xerath as much of a threat. The ironic thing about Arcana Xerath is the fact that his bindings, unlike the main universe, do actually seem to be a part of him. The more powerful he becomes, the more tightly the seal binds him. It's basically impossible for him to ever escape, so no matter how powerful Arcana Xerath becomes, odds of him ever being able to dethrone the other Arcana are slim at best.

Of course, Xerath's inability to realize this would probably make him a favorable pawn of Tahm Kench, who's all about manipulating people with words. Yes, in this universe, Xerath is more likely to be the one being manipulated, rather than the other way around.

And then of course there's Lucian, who wants to maintain order. He probably serves as a constant foil to Xerath, working to keep the Arcana of Desire in check in addition to his chains.

I wouldn't mind getting more lore for these guys someday, but I wouldn't bank on it too heavily, knowing Riot.))

What'cha think about the new Arcana skinline?

Oooooooh I got a couple of pointers. Overall though? LOVE IT 10 OUTTA 10 THE AESTHETIC IS BEAUTIFUL. Also kinda happy with the champ selection, but Riot, Kayn’s next skin. I’m not asking, I’m demanding.

Camille is looking as fine as always omg she’s actually perfect, same goes for Lucian, they look great and Tahm Kench is just an icon

THEY GAVE XERATH THE ANIME BOY TREATMENT SDKFJJSD (not that I’m complaining tho 😏 Arcana Xerath lives in my mind rent free)

Twisted Fate recently received the Damwon and Stargazer skin but I seriously wanna see an Arcana skin of him later down the line, I mean, he’s perfect with the card concept and all

I’m gonna say it again. Arcana Kayn. Or any other skin, legit Riot just make a damn skin for him it’s been so long

Arcana Xerath looks weird :/

His animations and BIG shoulder pads make him look odd.

I like the concept but I don't think the Arcana skinline is really for it.

Tahm Kench and Camille look the best out of everyone. Tahm Kench Kench even more in his splash

Minus his recall animation, there’s just something so clunky about his animations, almost as if they aren’t properly finished. I can’t put my finger on it but it’s probably the whole armour thing he’s got on

Honestly minus Xerath I think all the skins are perfect for Arcana with a clear theme, I can’t really tell who won the most but I’m also leaning towards Tahm Kench 😁

Honestly I don't like how riot made Xerath into an anime boy, I feel like they could've gone with something of the elderwood/coven/blood moon kinda feel. Maybe him having an animal skull of pure arcane magic or resembeling some of the animalistic tarot carts. The Arcana, a game of Nix Hydra games, made also a Tarot cart deck and they all have some animalistic themes but also making them unique and mystic enough so you don't just think they have only drawn a bunch of furries ( not meaning that in a rude way) they have some fishes, sun and moon, the devil. Riot could've done a lot with Xerath, I know that it is gonna sell well in China but, Idk the only thing that makes me want to buy his skin is his halo :/

But this is just my personal prefrance, it is still a good skin tho.

Also are you going to write for Arcana Xerath now???? Because I feel like you're gonna simp him 🤨

Although my simping is me making the most of an... odd circumstance because I agree. I remember seeing badass Camille, then Lucian, then Tahm Kench and then I just see red eboy Xerath??? His splash art does look good and he is hella fine but it’s still very underwhelming against the other Arcana skins. I feel making Xerath human should be saved for another skin line (Spirit Blossom 2021 anyone??? 😏)

But yes anon, you know me too well. I will very happily write for Arcana Xerath. He and Cosmic Devourer Vladimir are on the top of my list for original fics to write 😉
