When I used to watch the early seasons of the FT anime , something about Jellal always struck me as distinct about his features. His eyes always looked more prominent than the rest of the guys and I have cracked why.

My guy is wearing Kohl/Surma/Kajal.

Like LOOK at how defined his eyes are compared to another character , you can’t tell me the guy isn’t putting something on. Especially when no other guy or girl character has such defined eye looks (other than Macbeth but it’s obvious he’s wearing eyeliner)

Yes people might say art style for the first season I can agree but look at the characters and then Jellal and tell me if there isn’t something more there.

Look at the guys here , they have dark lashlines but nowhere NEAR as dark and prominent as Jellal.

Even compared to girls from the first season Jellal has a darker and more thicker lash line compared to them.

Look at the difference between him and Erza side by side! He definitely has a more defined lash line! And look compared to FT girls eyes, when it is the convention of girls usually having the darker lashline in anime.

And then Jellal

There's a clear distinction! His is not just more defined and connected compared to men in FT but also females too!

The reason I have come to the conclusion of Kohl/Kajal/Surma is because I HC Jellal with Arab heritage (or whatever would be the equivalent in earthland-) due to his name Jellal (which is basically another spelling of Jalal) and Kohl is known to be used by the men in the Arab culture to beautify them. And also Kohl is used by people in Arabia/India/Egypt due to its medicinal properties for retaining eye health and improving vision!

Also what differentiates for my thinking that Jellal is not using normal eyeliner but Kohl/Surma/Kajal is because of the way it is applied. Other eyeliners can go on the outer eye but Kohl/Surma is traditionally applied always in the inner corners of the eyes, just like Jellal has (in season 1)

(As you can see the girl in the photo above has her eyes lined like Jellal using Kohl/Surma/Kajal)

Considering Jellal’s magic , I can imagine there is a huge priority on his vision due to the speeds he travels at when casting, so it makes sense for him to use such a thing to help him in battle or aid in beating the consequences of using his magic so his sight isn’t compromised and remains strong!

Also because Jellal's magic revolves around using stars/light , this medicinal cosmetic has also been used to protect against the glare of light which would also come to help for Jellal in battle!

So what is the take away from this post? I put way too much thought trying to prove a HC I have had from young but found out it actually adds up now looking at the facts. You guys can tell me if i'm reaching or not with this after seeing the evidence and argument presented.

Also season 1 Jellal Fernandes is an ethnic king and we stan he never forgot his roots. <3

I would post something if I had any ideas what animals suited the characters other than the dragon slayers /possibly/ being dragon taurs. As it is, the only thing I’ve thought about beyond the concept was that taurs not needing/wearing clothing on their lower half means that any scars Erza, Jellal, and the other Tower of Heaven survivors have there would be visible ^^’

That’s the thing! They could be any animal you want depending on aethsetic and humor! You could make the dragon slayers dragon-taurs, OR you could go with other taurs for the humor of seeing like-a fire breathing akita puppy and a wind wielding fawn of some kind! For Erza as another example you could pick by the red fur to go with her hair (so like, Maned Wolf or Red Fox? They look cool) or by animals that fit her ferocity (like a tiger, which also would fit her red hair!) or even by oblique reference to her title via making her some kind of deer taur (stags and deer are associated with the fairy realm aren’t they? I think they are anyway, plus, all the dragon slayers being afraid of a deertaur is funny).

Some other cool/funny taur halves might be:

Gajeel - lizard taur of some kind or something more traditionally fierce like hyena, African wild dog, wolf, or even moose (do not mess with moose. Ever. They have Big Stompers And Know How To Use Them). OH OR- Gajeel’s last name is canonically Redfox and dragons are hardly the MOST creative at naming (plus Gajeel could have named himself after winding up on human streets) so you could totally make him a Red Fox. Gajeel Redfox the Red Fox taur was that bad that was bad I’ll see myself out XD

The Strauss siblings could all be horses or dog breeds, just with different taur halves that makes Elfman drastically bigger than his sibs (ie Elfman the Clydesdale and Mirajane the dainty little Arabian or Quarter Horse).

Levy - maybe a house cat breed like a Ragdoll, or even a rabbit breed! It would be a funny contrast to Gajeel if you picked something fierce or large for him.

Lucy - ... idk honestly, she’s nobility, so possibly an herbivorous or show breed. Like some kind of popular show dog breed, show cat breed, or conversely a wild animal like a deer or elk? There’s a type of deer breed (can’t remember the name rn) that has spots even as an adult so they look kinda like big fawns and that might be cute for her. Or you could pick something with a gold coat like a Golden Retriever to go with her hair. Then again- if you made Natsu a dog (or just considering Natsu’s personality even without making him a dog) a cat would fit right into their early anime dynamic.

Like- if you need a suggestion or want to ask if choice A or B sounds better for a taur half or whatever feel free to yeet an ask. I won’t pick them for you obviously, your bunny your rules, but if you get really stuck then I’d be happy to help. This is absolutely the kind of bunny I would encourage.

Pirate AU

A fic I've written and hope to finish. It was inspired by the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, Sea myths and legends, and various famous stories like Arabian Nights, Treasure Island, and The Little Mermaid.

Natsu Dragneel - A notorious and infamous pirate, pillager, brigand, and captain of the ship Fairy Tail. He pillages, plunders, rifles, and loots. Having grown up in poverty he is desperate for money and to make something of himself. He was raised by his father Igneel who was an infamous pirate just like him and trained him to be one but after his father died he takes his place as the new captain. He plans to steal the book of E.N.D and hold it for ransom however despite his greed he loves his crew, considers them his family and wouldn't think twice about sacrificing anything for them including his own life.

Gray Fullbuster - Natsu's crafty, isolated, religious, somewhat cynical first mate. Born the son of a navy officer until the pirate Deliora killed his family by sinking the ship they were sailing on. He was the only survivor and was saved by Igneel and joined his crew in return. However the incident left him with aquaphobia and the inability to swim. He is not as greedy as Natsu and often tries to think rationally and serves as Natsu's voice of reason. He is very isolated and has put up barriers that not even Natsu can get through but someone does manage to slip through the cracks

Erza Scarlet - It is said that it is bad luck to bring a woman on board a ship but Erza completely averts that. A highly experienced pirate, sailor, and swordswoman, a free spirit who is pretty much the only person onboard allowed to tell the captain what to do. Daughter of the ruthless buccaneer Irene who left her child at an orphanage believing that she could never be a good mother to her. She was later kidnapped as a child and forced into becoming a pirate until she was rescued by the priest Makarov. As a woman she joins Natsu's crew in hopes of finding her childhood friends whom she was seperated from.

Gajeel Redfox - The confident, aggressive, and bulking muscle of the crew. Known as the strongest and toughest man that ever lived and someone who you definitely don't want to anger. Yet despite his rough exterior he has a soft side and is secretly a romantic. Like Natsu he'll do just about anything for money but he has his limits and though he enjoys a good fight he will not challenge anyone who posses as a threat.

Laxus Dreyar - The arrogant, cunning, and manipulative son of a merciless and murdering pirate, grandson of a priest who believes that he should captain the crew due to being a pirate longer than any of the other crew members. He and Natsu fight over dominance but unlike Natsu, Laxus was raised without any pirate honor or code making him a dirty pirate however deep down he has good heart and only wants what's best for the crew.

Lucy Heartfilia - The pretty, increasingly strong-minded and determined daughter of the wealthy governor Jude Heartfilia who often knew her own mind, had a fiery attitude and was headstrong. Despite living a life of wealth and luxary she longed for adventure and a life on the sea. She gets her wish when she gets caught in the middle of a fight between Fairy Tail and a rival pirate crew leading her to be seperated from her father. She agrees to have her father pardon Natsu and his men from their crimes if they return her home after they steal the book of E N.D. Natsu agrees but he soon finds that he got more than what he bargained for.

Juvia Lockser - A beautiful, reserved, kind, and compassionate mermaid who unlike most merfolk is not animalistic or man-eating but rather empathizes with humans. She desires an immortal soul which can only be obtained if she wins a human's love. She gets her chance when she saves Gray from drowning and the crew discover that they need a mermaid's tear to reach the island where the book of E.N.D resides. She posses a voice that is supposed to be the most beautiful sound in the world and she can grow legs on land but she suffers pain when she walks on them.

Jellal Fernandes - The loyal officer to the queen of Fiore who along with his men is charged with hunting down and arresting the pirate crew Fairy Tail for crimes against the crown. He loathes pirates with a firey passion due to them abducting and abusing him as a child however his mission reaches a bump in the road when he learns that one of the pirates he is supposed to arrest is his childhood sweetheart Erza.

Levy McGarden - A majestic, book smart, and moody young nymph, fascinated with the human world, who often disguises herself as a mortal so she can study them. She is mostly very calm but if you anger her you better be prepared for a storm unlike any other. (Originally I was going to make her a goddess but then I couldn't ship her with Gajeel because he's mortal)

Mirajane Strauss - A sweet and friendly Amazon warrior who unusually does not harbor a hatred toward men however she can be very violent, hot tempered, and dangerous. (When she has to be that is )
