one of my long-term questions for fantasy worldbuilding is why so many fantasy worlds seem to have inexplicably large friesian populations
#like i get that they're fancy black dressage horses#but there are so many fun horse breeds out there#and all everyone goes for are friesians...#this is partially fueled by my lifelong love of arabian horses > all others#but c'mon u've got marwari u've got fjord you've even got Straight Up Gold Akhal Teke#anyway. campaign for more horse variety in fantasy movies/shows#personal

Red dead characters as horses, based not on vibes but personality.
Firstly, I am an equestrian of twelve years I know that a horse's breed doesn't fully determine it's personality and you can find any horse of any breed with any personality, but this is based on stereotypes, my own personal experience and well... Google. Again, this is not by vibes, but personality so reflect a little from horse to person.
Arthur Morgan - American Quarter Horse
No matter if it is a show pony or a workhorse you are looking for, the American Quarter Horse got you. It is known for being easy to handle but reliable no matter the job given. It is a good all-around horse and can handle anything from beginner lessons to high-level competitions.
Hosea Matthews - Norwegian Fjord Horse
Very sweet and docile-looking horse but make no mistake, this beast has more opinion, sass and stubbornness than you would ever imagine. Intelligent in the way that it is fully aware of the people around it and knows when it is time to play tricks and run corners and when it is time to play it sweet. The second you dare underestimate it it will remind you that it is in fact stronger than what you might expect.
Dutch Van Der Linde - The Andalusian
A horse breed known widely for being elegant and fancy but unlike many other hot blooded (reactive) horses, tends not to get hurt as easily, coming out fine from situations where the other hot blooded might have gotten wounded in. Although known for being smart, attentive and sensible, they can easily become too much to handle if handled wrongly.
John Marston - The Arabian
Now I know some people are gonna be like "no that doesn't fit at all!" but hold on, just listen, hear me out. Although generally known for being hot-headed, hard to control and stupid, they are actually quite intelligent, have a high endurance and are well aware of their surroundings. With dense and strong bone structure they are quite resilient to much, however they do tend to get wounded in their own hot-headedness... (John I am looking at you strolling up to Fort Mercer and getting fkn shot on sight, tf you thought was gonna happen?)
Javier Escuella - American Mustang
A wild horse known for its stubborn spirit and the lengths it will go to for freedom. It takes a long time trusting, however once having earned its heart it is the most loyal you can find. It is also a highly adaptable horse.
Bill Williamson - Irish Cob/Gypsy Vanner (Same breed, different name)
Lazy, hard to get moving and often seen as bad, the last choice or a breed that wouldn't hold up in bigger competitions, however is actually quite good and does any job well. They are eager to please (Bill to Dutch) and can also grow a beard!
Till Jackson - The Shetland Pony
Small and very adorable looking to a point one thinks they are harmless, and while they can be very sweet, they are going to throw you the second you least expect it. They will not let their short stature and cute appearance be a disadvantage to them but instead use it against others. (Knew one that bit the taller horse's stomach and became the damn leader of that herd)
Charles Smith - The Friesian
Often seen as scary and frightening looking due to their tough exterior, however they are very kind-hearted and highly intelligent. They are loyal and well-mannered, very reliable and makes a good companion.
Kieran Duffy - The Haflinger
A very gentle and generally curious fella. Known for being very friendly and people-oriented. If you spend any time around them you will also often find out that they are quite silly, however make no mistake, they are still horses and thus will always be dangerous.
Josiah Trelawny - Pryor Mountain Mustang
An endangered form of Mustang that are known for elegance and athleticism and while could easily make for a great show pony there is a few problems. They are not very reliable as they are quite skittish and tend to flee as well as be quite hard to tame and tie down.

Marauders as horses
inspired by this post which also reminded me of the first ever fanarts i’ve posted online, so it was nice to revisit this 17 years later! Also drawing animals again 🙈 thanks @annabtg for bringing this to my attention! I’m also tagging @polaroidcats and @hiddenmoonbeam, cause this pic is kinda similar to the TLK one, in a sense that they are drawn as an animal neither of them can turn into in canon.
I was such a horse maniac as a little girl, so the coat colours and breeds/build are not just aesthetic actually.
Lily has chestnut red coat with a subtle blanket marking on her hips (her “freckles”), even subtler socks on her legs and a stripe on her head. She is based on an Appaloosa, mainly because of the coat colour.
James has a buckskin coat because you know, he’s a buck, duh. He is based on an Arabian race horse, but can be any kind of warmblood/light horse, cause they are fast and athletic. I added some light markings around his eyes and nose to resemble his glasses, and he has a curly mane.
Sirius has a solid black coat with a star on his head (obviously). He is based on a Friesian horse because those are just so beautiful, look quite regal, and the general characteristics of the breed just fits Sirius so well. I wanted him to be tall and strong, so the size is based more on a draft horse.
Remus has a varnish roan coat, and is based on a Belgian draught horse and Fjord horse mix, because he has thicker fur, calmer nature, and a little “wildness”.
Peter has a cream coat with stocklings and a bald marking on his head. He is based on a Shetland pony, because he’s very short and has a chubby looking body.
Snape has a blue roan coat, no markings. He is based on an Oldenburger horse, because i just wanted to highlight how thin he is. German warmbloods are usually “specialzed” in certain tasks such as show jumping or hunting, which i think suits Snape’s canon expertise in Poitions and Dark magic well enough.

mlp species headcannons pegasi are arabian shaped and hollow boned
unicorns are marwari shaped with cloven hooves, goatees and lion tails
earth ponies are dutch draft shaped and heavily furred.
alicorns are huge, have long lion tails, slight feathering and have 4 wings. their builds are similar to friesians.
earth/pega are fjord/welsh cob shaped with tiny wings unicorn/pega are thoroughbred shaped unicorn/earth are irish draught shaped with cloven hooves, donkey like tails and short facial hair.
twilight is an uni/earth which is why celestia took interest in their magical prowess and how they acclimated to becoming an alicorn so easily as their build is most similar to natual alicorns.
rarity is a kirin unicorn cross and trims her goatee and paints her hooves. She has a pearl like gene so her coat shines.
rainbowdash is pure pegasus and struggles with on ground tasks as pegasus legs are very fragile. she has rainbow markings up her legs after her rainboom.
applejack is a pure earthpony along with most of her family, she braids her mane and tail to keep them out of the way and wears protective joint braces.
pinkiepie is a unicorn/pegasus mix with a mutation which led her to inherit neither horn or wings but all the magic became her famous pinkie sense/ 4th wall magic
fluttershy is a pegasus/earthpony and can only glide and tread clouds. she was outcasted and doesnt like to hang out with other pegasi. she has bat pony features such as semi webbed wings, fangs and fluffy ears.
cadence was born a pure unicorn and took a while to aclimate with becoming an alicorn.
maybe soon ill draw references of all the mane 6

hi for totally no reason id love to know your takes on svsss characters as horse breeds PLUS mlp species... im a huge fan of when ppl draw ponies more horselike so i have been thinking a lot about how cool itd be to combine stylized horse pony bodies with the whimsy of unicorn / pegasus / earth pony divisions. and you are the person i respect the most when it comes to danmei horse combinations... i do not think anyone else could comprehend the magic in this concept
OMFGGG thank you for letting me speak on this I love you
Ok here are my well-established breed headcanons based purely off vibes (because I don't think airplane would know enough about horses to get anywhere close to this detailed in PIDW canon):
- Shen Qingqiu: Perlino Akhal-Teke, the high maintenance it girl the moment the model
- Luo Binghe: Friesian, colloquially known as the most handsome horses with strong silhouettes and gorgeously famous curly black hair
- Shang Qinghua: Norwegian Fjord Horse, small and muscular light drafts with very cute faces
- Mobei Jun: Shire Horse, Extremely big and thicc boys
- Yue Qingyuan: Clydesdale, gentle giant and overall splendid fellas
- Liu Qingge and Mingyan: Lippizaners, iconic for their elegance and beauty with a history in cavalry
- Ning Yingying: Bashkir Curly Horse, just very cute tbh they're curly horses what else do you want
- Sha Hualing: Arabian Horse, sleek speedy and energetic with a very shl-like appearance imo
- Ming Fan: Thoroughbred, pedigreed shoe-in for success, somehow still loses to Binghe at every race
In terms of my little pony I will admit I'm not actually a huge mlp fan (long story short I watched the princess promenade movie and was terrified of spike for some reason) but @/selpuku has a great SV mlp au that I think of all the time where the cultivators are pegasi and demons are unicorns, sqq uses his wing as his fan it's just perfect. Of course regardless Binghe would be an alicorn. Ofc. I also posted this before I think but I think Shang Qinghua would also be an alicorn, but people only start noticing post canon because before that he wasn't in a safe enough environment to develop a horn and so just thought he was a pegasus, but when he gets his stuff sorted out and is happy with mbj he starts growing a little nubby horn!! Overall I don't think there's a way to go wrong with it though! Mlp aus are great and cringe is dead because horses fucking rock
Hope this helps!!! Let me know if you have any other questions or thoughts this was such a fun post to make and really brightened my day!!! :) ♥️♥️🐎🐎

When I'm having a bad mental health day week month life, I like to imagine what Astride will be.
Some days, it feels like I'm staying alive just to finally see a *good* horse game.
Okay this post already got heavier than intended but whatever
Anyways, I try to think about what types of horses I'll breed in it and the problem is, the types of horses I breed in any given game relies heavily on what they look like in that particular game
Like in Horse Isle 3, I didn't start breeding flaxen black chestnuts because I loved them in real life. I barely knew they existed. I hadn't given flaxen much thought at all, actually. I started breeding them because normal chestnuts just don't look good in HI3. Their manes are always a weird color. But flaxen manes have a beautiful ombre in HI3, going from pale blonde to a chestnuty color at the tips (darker or lighter depending on the shade of chestnut the horse is). Honestly, HI3 flaxens look way pretty than real life flaxens lol.
In addition, I HATE roan in HI3 but I love roan in real life. I hate it in the game because of how it inherits. You need two copies of the roan gene to get a horse that actually looks roan. If you have one copy, it just has a weird fade on the butt that looks awful. While horses with two copies of the gene do often look pretty, I can't breed those for my purposes because I like to make hybrids and zorses and mules can't have two copies of roan. So they get the weird fade if their horse parent has roan. So I have to avoid roan as much as possible in my horse line so they don't ruin my hybrids.
And the same goes for the breeds. There are some horse breeds I love in real life. The Irish Cob, for example, has always been a favorite of mine. But they look... uh... awful in Horse Isle 3. As do a few other breeds I usually like. Then there are breeds I hadn't really given much thought to, or didn't know they existed, that look really good in HI3.
So it's just really hard for me to dream about what I'll do when Astride is finally a game because I don't know what colors will actually look good or what the horse breeds will look like. In theory, I'd like to breed Icelandics and Percheron, because those are two of my favorite breeds in other games. But what if they fuck them up? Or what if another breed, like the Dole or Arabian just looks better to me?
I just don't know.
They've posted t-posed images of a few of the breeds and I certainly have no complaints about them, but a still t-posed picture isn't a good way to judge how they'll look in the game when they're alive and moving.
And even color is hard to judge right now, despite having a fairly robust custom horse system, because the lighting is fucked. So right now, I like to go with grey toned horses because really light or really dark horses look flattened in the current lighting.
The next update might include better lighting so that may be a step closer to me knowing what colors I want to breed!
But then again, will different colors look different on different breeds? Right now, the game only has the Warmblood. By the end of the year, we should have the Fjord, Arabian, and Percheron but that's still far in the future and I don't know if the colors will translate the same between the models.
So yeah, just some horse game thoughts.

I'm none too familiar with horse breeds aside from what little media and video games (red dead redemption 2) I played but I wanted to ask: What're your favorite kind of horses? I'm a fan of Draft-esque horses. Huge, big hooves, built like tree trunks but look fantastic to give pets to.
oOOOHHH what a wonderful question!!
first off i do love draft horses a lot!! especially the ones with feathered heels (THE FLUFFY STUFF ON THEIR FEET) one of my therapy horses was a tinker horse very much like this:
and she was absolutely wonderful to work with.. though the feathers actually a lot of work to keep clean and healthy, lots of scrubbing and trimming so the horse doesn't end up stepping on them (which feels bad)
anyway ANYWAY some of my favorite breeds (in no order because it really depends on the day and hour of the day what i love the most, and i love them all equally anyway, so)
Friesian Horse
they are *gorgeous* and in my opinion, like the perfect balance between a cold-blood horse and a warmblood one! the strength of a draft horse and the elegance of a lighter, warmblood horse!! they look like an actual dream...
Norwegian Fjord Horse
small, stocky, beautiful and quirky.. one of the oldest horse breeds in the world!! their markings are called primitive markings (dun coloring, dorsal stripe, two-toned mane and tail) and it's really striking to see in real life, too! also i just like their temperament a lot.. they're very pony-like in their stubbornness..!
Pura Raza Española
.. also called the andalusian horse, or pure spanish horse! i have a very personal reason for loving these horses (and especially this coloring, the gray dapple!) cause when i was a kid, i was on a summer camp where my.. uh.. "assigned horse" to take care of was a gorgeous PRE horse, called Navarro! he was pretty temperamental, but very gentle with me. i wasn't allowed to ride him because of his temperament, but just being with him every day was the best ;w; but aside from that, they're just... stunning to see! they move like light on clouds, they're gorgeous, and seeing them do passage is magical!! i went weekly to a stable with multiple PRE horses, and not only are they beautiful, they're also very nice to interact with. i've only had positive experiences with them..!!
Arabian Horse
one of the oldest horse breeds, they're beautiful! smart! gorgeous! they're like, if elves were horses?? or FAIRIES... fairy horses.. literal fantasy magic horse in the flesh!! and i love the way they carry their tails like a flag!!! absolutely legendary horses.
honorary mention:
Suomenhevonen (The Finnhorse)
i can't not include the finnhorse. they feel like home.. they are home... i love em...
but in the end. All horses are angels. And i love them all. so much. i lvoe thmgb.........

SSO Upgrade Idea: WEATHER AND SEASONS
To improve the realism of the game and help a lot with immersion.
I. WEATHER -> New weather types: 1. Sunny (sunlight, basically what we have now) 2. Cloudy (shadows of the clouds moving on the ground) 3. Rainy (downpour and muddy roads, hoofprints) 4. Stormy (rain, wind, lightning and thunder) 5. Windy (tree canopies and horse's mane and tail moving) 6. Foggy (shorter distance you can see) 7. Snowfall (heavily snowing and cold) 8. Heatwave (mirages, rippling hot air, strong sunlight) ->Weather types by season:
-> The weather is written for each day separately, according to season. When you log in, you get a newspaper in your mailbox for the day, where you can see the forecast. -> The weather always applies to the season you turned on in each area. If you change it, the forecast in your newspaper will change. -> Dino valley basically gets back the cold effect: it will not be permanent, but only apply when the weather is snowing, which will basically be 80% of the time in Dino.
Effect on your horse: -> The Jorvik Warmblood starter is both Hot and Cold tolerant. -> All of the magic horses are immune to slowing effects. -> Neither the Starter or the Magic horses are immune to additional effects.
Slowing effects -> The two main slowing effects are "Hot" and "Freezing", if you don't use the appropriate horse, they won't do the fastest gallop. -> Winterdale and Summerplains basically don't have the weather effects, only if there is that specific weather happening (snowfall or heatwave). -> Heat tolerant horses are the southern breeds (like the Arabian). -> Cold tolerant horses are the northern breeds (like the Fjord).
2. Additional Effects: -> Heatwave: any horse you ride in heatwave weather for at least an hour will want to drink (loses the watered buff you get at daily care) -> Snowfall: if you ride a horse in snowfall it will become hungry (need to feed it, since it lost the fed buff. -> Rain: spend and hour in rain and you will need to brush your horse again. -> Storm: spend an hour in a storm and you need to pick your horse's hooves again.
II. SEASONS
-> Basic state: --Harvestlands basically looks like early autumn (except Goldenhills) --Winterdale and Dino valley like winter --Spring Valley and Jorcrater as spring --Summerplains as summer. -> The season will not have an effect on your horse (unlike the weather. -> Toggle on Seasons: --In the autumn you can turn on/off autumn environment in Spring Valley and Summervale. --In the winter you can turn on/off winter environment in Harvestlands, Spring Valley and Summervale. --In the spring you can turn on/off spring environment in Harvestlands and Summervale. --In the summer you can turn on/off summer environment in Spring Valley and Harvestlands. -> Winterdale and Dino valley can only be winter environment because magic reasons. -> Jorcrater can only be eternal spring because magic reasons. -> The Lone Star area is always a desert, but spring and winter can be applied. -> You can’t turn the darkness off above Pi’s swamp, Morrinweald and the Old Morass (magic). -> Ashland and Drakon Valley are always just dry with little to no plants.

I think my general rating of the Gen 3 (i.e the only gen I give a shit about because I have standards and don't actually like intentionally hopping around on outdated models) nowadays goes something like this (No ranking within the tiers I don't do that it changes per day p much)
Top 3 Favourites - Percheron, Appaloosa, Tennessee Walker
Really Fucking Good S-Tier Pons - Belgian Warmblood, Dartmoor, Dutch Warmblood, Finnhorse (The sun-bleached colour), Gotland, Haflinger, Icelandic, Lipizzaner, Paso Fino (The rose dapple colour), Shire
Perfectly Fine, Not Amazing Though - Jorvik Warmblood, Lusitano, Marwari, Morgan
Mid (Thumbs Up) - Clydesdale, Finnhorse (Every other colour), Fjord, Irish Cob, Curly (In my heart), Paso Fino (Every other colour), Trakehner
Meh (Thumbs Down) - Ardennes, Andalusian, Arabian, Curly (With my brain), English Thoroughbred, Jorvik Pony, North Swedish, Welsh Pony
Absolutely the Fuck Not - American Quarter Horse, Akhal-Teke, Chincoteague, Connemara, Knabstrupper
Worst Horse Award - Jorvik Friesian
No Opinions, But Probably Positive (Don't own yet, but want to) - American Paint, Mustang, Selle Francais
