Aquaedamae and her Circle
Aquaedamae, goddess of oceans, the moon, medicine, music, and earthquakes, is one of the eight deities worshipped by the Order of Esochaia.
She is the ruler of the Realm of Seas, overseeing all saltwater bodies and the creatures which live there.Â
She is often called the Mother of the Arts, as she helped invent many of the first instruments and brought much creativity to Phesyra.Â
Her sacred animal is the heron. She is often affiliated with peace and benevolence, but also keeping grudges. She and her Circle are guided by the subconscious.
Aquaedamae doesn’t interact with her Claims or Circle often, and spends most of her time in Atlantis with the mer-creatures of the seas. She typically sends a delegate to convene with the High Priest of her Circle for her.Â
She claims witches who are deeply sensitive, deeply kind, or deeply passionate. She will visit witches she’s claimed when they’re especially inspiring.Â
The god Patan is her closest friend in the pantheon. Although they are known to be the kindest and calmest gods, they often get swept up in each apocalypse, letting their worst qualities get the better of them.Â
She has lived in a variety of seas and oceans over the years, but has resided in Atlantis since it sank.Â

The Order of Esochaia
In my WIP Strange Magic, most witches follow the faith of the Order of Esochaia, an ancient religion originating in the Southeastern Mediterranean about three thousand years ago. The Order falls under a more general collection of faiths including Paganism and Wicca, called the Paragon Sect.Â
The Council of Elders based in Crete governs the Order. The Council is compromised of thirteen witches and warlocks. When the positions were created three thousand years ago, they were voted upon. Nowadays, current Council members vote on new ones themselves. The Elders judge trials, make decisions on how witches shall interact with the mortal world, and create laws.Â
Witches part of the Order live by the Codex Paradosa, a book of ancient writings composed by the original witches on the island of Phesyra.Â
The Order believes in the Eight Gods:Â
Caelum, the god of the sky, storms, marriage, the sun, and victory.
Hekate, the goddess of prophecy, the night, magic, crossroads, and necromancy.
Mortisal, the god of the Under, death, winter, poetry, and secrets.
Anguisa, the goddess of serpents, inspiration, fertility, trade, courage, and dawn.
Patan, the god of the earth, faeries, spring, the truth, and justice.
Aquaedamae, the goddess of oceans, the moon, medicine, music, and earthquakes.
Sapti, the god of cleverness, good luck, ritual, the stars, and mountains.
Ignisia, the goddess of fire, dreams, invention, passion, and agriculture.
At the age of twelve, each witch or warlock will be claimed by one of the gods and be initiated into their respective Circles. During this time, most witches attend an academy to learn and improve their magical abilities.Â
Members of the Order believe that there are quite a few possible options for what happens when a witch dies. Some will become ghosts, the most distinguished will be taken into the Heavens to serve Caelum as an angel, the worst will descend into Hell, others will rest and/or party in the Under for eternity, and the forgotten will be absorbed into the Shadow Realm.Â
Witches pray every day, once in the morning, and once at night, typically to the god or goddess of their Circle. During meals, they must give a part of their meal to the fire as an offering to the gods. Witches convene at a church service each Friday evening at 8 pm, sitting with their Circles.Â
Each Circle is governed by a High Priest chosen by the Council, but locally, priests look over smaller groups.Â
One of the most positions in the Order is the Oracle, always called upon by the goddess Hekate. The Oracle is always a woman, and she always forsees the next apocalypse and its savior.
Good and evil is a tricky topic in the Order. “Evil” behavior isn’t necessarily revered, but it also isn’t spoken against. Most witches and warlocks want power, and will go to great lengths to get it and keep it. As long as you aren’t breaking any laws or speaking against the gods, then you’re probably fine.Â
The core values of the Order of Esochaia are knowledge, loyalty, performance, power, and versatility.Â

CAIN WALLER // THE SIREN // STRANGE MAGIC
While most of their classmates would go on to wizarding universities, Cain longed for the Manhattan School of Music. Last summer, in a peach wine cooler-slash-orange sunset induced dream haze, he admitted to Amantha that he would give it all up—magic, Sermyce, all of it—if he got to play music for real.
He didn’t mention it in the morning or ever again.
Cain Waller is a senior at Sermyce Academy of the Arcane and older brother of Amantha. Although an extremely skilled warlock, he cares more about music and his band, Neptune’s Knees, than magic. Cain is naturally flirtatious and can’t help but make friends with anyone around. He longs for summer vacations visiting his grandparents in California, mostly just to be close to warm beaches. He’ll do anything for those closest to him, no matter what the sacrifice may be.

Amantha has always felt like she's living in somebody else's shadow her entire life. Her parents are both insanely accomplished in their fields and have the awards to show for it. Her older brother, Cain, was a magical child prodigy and invited to take summer courses at Sermyce years before he was even claimed by Aquaedamae. Even her uncle Nolan was the Chosen One during the 1999 apocalypse. She wants to prove herself more than anything, but no matter what she does or how hard she tries, she never feels like she's good enough. Before the savior was announced, a small part of her hoped it would be her, just to feel important.
