For my money's worth, the "first concert almost ends in disaster before the girls rally to victory" bit, the plotline about the school closing down from lack of applicants, and those few unnecessary groping gags with Mari are the only parts of Sunshine!! Season 1 that I feel it could've done without: the first could've been done with the blackout alone, with no need for the additional "Chika screwed up the show time" thing, and the school plotline matters for next season but doesn't really go anywhere in Season 1, so they could've saved it for later than they introduced it. The Mari gags were just....why even?

The other stuff you mentioned, I will defend to my dying breath. Chika seems a lot like Honoka at first glance, but it becomes more and more clear as you watch her that, in the words of one reviewer, "Chika is not Honoka: Chika is Hanayo trying TO BE Honoka". Honoka had natural leadership skills from the offset, but Chika's just a spacey school idol fangirl who has to actually grow into the role. You is externally as opposite of Kotori as it gets, so she never really bothered me, and it helped that she was Chika's only best friend at the start and there wasn't an Umi counterpart in the equation. Yoshiko works as well as she does because she's Nico in reverse: Nico was an actual gremlin girl who put on a cute precious cinnamon roll act as her idol persona. Yoshiko is a cute precious cinnamon roll who puts on a gremlin act for her "fallen angel" chunibyou persona. Dia really benefits from rewatch and hindsight since she's a massive subversion of what Eli was to μ’s. Eli opposed the group for reasons she fully, sincerely meant. She really did not want the group to exist, refusing to support them or join them despite her hidden wish to do so out of stubborn pride: she'd lost a promising career as a stage dancer and so she had to throw all effort into her role on the student council, so she couldn't bear the thought of her student council means being unable to save the school yet some amateur song-and-dance performers being able to do so, so she tried to derail the school idols' progress at every turn. Dia feels about school idols the complete opposite of "they're frivulous amateurs", she quickly comes around to wanting Aqours to succesfully take off in their career to the point of giving them their name to start with and helping them at turns like with restoring the power during their first show, but she takes a very "tough love" approach because she, like Mari and Kanan, is haunted by the past where they weren't able to make it as school idols, so she doesn't want to see these girls, her little sister included, going about things in a foolish way that only ensure they end up getting emotionally hurt the same way she, Mari, and Kanan were. Mari similarly subverts the Nozomi archetype in that here, it's the "Eli" character who gives the girls their idol group name and sincerely supports their efforts while the "Nozomi" character is setting them up to potentially fail because she's a snake in the grass who only really cares about getting Kanan's attention so that they can reconcile and be school idols together once again, making her the true adversary.

Trios were just sort of unavoidable this time around, with the third years especially being tightly-knit and important in both seasons.

There's also Saint Snow, who in just three episodes managed to outdo A-RISE as the main rivals, and that continues into Season 2.

And frankly, I feel it is underselling the show and what Jukki Hanada was able to bring to the table with it to claim that "the biggest issue facing this show is how much the shadow of the first Love Live hangs over it": this would only be a really big, genuine "issue" for the show's success if the writing was unaware of it, but as the season goes to show, they were all too aware of it and constructed the entire first season's metanarrative specifically towards the end of stepping out of the shadow cast by such a great predecessor so that not just this new school idol group and show, but all Love Live! groups and shows to follow them would be able to shine in their own special ways undeterred by the lingering specter of School Idol Project and μ’s

A large part of what made Aqours as beloved as they became is how effectively they were able to do that, coming off to everyone in and out of universe as Bargain Bin μ’s, and so the story of their series deliberately derived from, called back to, and straight-up repeated beats of μ’s' story in a way to make not just the audience think they could predict and expect what they were getting into, but to make Aqours themselves think they could predict and expect what they were getting into, which proved to be a dangerously false sense of security and self-assurance come their performance in Tokyo where they placed at the bottom with the audience score of 0, a sign from the universe screaming "μ’s was one of a kind and what worked for them will not work for every aspiring school idol group! You are NOT μ’s, so stop trying to BE μ’s and go seek ways to define who YOU are and find your own special radiance to share with the world!" Which ends up being exactly what Aqours went on to do.

This season would be a 7.5/10 for me on its own. But upon rewatch and given everything it means, it's a soild, easy 8/10 or even 9/10.

And that's season 1 of Sunshine down.

The biggest issue facing this show is how much the shadow of the first Love Live hangs over it. Even taking into account the metacommentary of Aquors learning to follow their own path instead of trying to be like Muse, the similarities between Sunshine and School Idol Project do it no favors. The spunky, scatterbrained orange-haired protagonist, her more sensible silver-haired best friend, the black-haired gremlin, the student council president who seemingly opposes the group while wishing she could be part of it, the president's closest confidante who supports the group openly and is responsible for unnecessary groping gags (somehow even worse in Mari's case), trios for each school year, the first concert almost ending in disaster before the girls rally to victory, the plotline about the school closing down from lack of applicants... there comes a point where the excuse of intentional parallels only get you so far. If Sunshine wants to shine as brilliantly as School Idol Project, then it needs to take its own advice and chart its own course instead of following so closely in its predecessor's footsteps. It needs to trust in its own unique shine, and if the second season is able to do that, then it will absolutely shake out as a triumph.

Because man, even with all those caveats, this show is really fucking good. The drama it mines from the characters' failures and reconciliation, the warmth of its setting, the nuances it finds in what it means to pursue greatness, Aquors' spectacular group dynamic... when it's marching to its own beat, Sunshine is every bit the soul-uplifting joy that School Idol Project was. There is more than enough potential for this installment to equal its predecessor and add its own unique beauty to the Love Live franchise, a beauty all its own. If it can accomplish that, then I'm gonna be singing this one's praises just as loudly as the first one. Until then, though, I'm giving Sunshine's first season a score of 6.5/10, and I hope season 2 will truly bring this entry into its own. See you then!

i cant believe kawaguchi's regular voice sounds like that holy shit (i had to rewatch mujikaku a priori as soon as she introduced herself because she slayed so hard in it)

arisha says she was really scared during harmonics because she didnt know the lift would be going up lol

konachi says she's nervous now she's meeting them again

arisha says harmonics was her first time using a stand mic and she didn't know how to use it. konachi starts laughing and so they all start bringing up a certain somebody who wasn't tall enough so her stand mic had to be put on the lowest setting and even then she was barely tall enough for it 💭

konachi talks about how her skirt flared out and hit the mic and it kept shaking all the way to the end. arisha said she did that during the rehearsal too, and it was shaking so much she was told not to move it until the lift had fully lowered and when she tried she heard a "hey don't" in her ear

aimi says it was her first time singing it with so many people, as its normally a duet. the line distribution was different too and it was really fresh and she was really happy everyone sung it with such passion

aimi points out arisha's red highlight and arisha says for the songs aqours did individually they used outfits of theirs that suited the song. she had looked at the cover art and past performances and decided upon the we'll get the next dream outfit, and on the day aimi-san had a red highlight too and she felt like it was fate

love bon appétit! konachi says she had a lot of reliable people performing it with her

after the video everyone immediately says its cute. konachi says their outfits were nice and the others agree they all go together and feel like a unit

aimi says she loves the choreography and presumably starts doing it but its a radio so

konachi says their sitting/standing positions for sayonara andromeda were really good. arisha says it was really emotional performing in front of such a wide screen in black and white

aimi says she really came to love the song. there was a lot of singing in unison but she wants to hear the solo parts too

kawaguchi says she feels as satisfied as if she just watched a movie after watching the video lol

aimi says it was amazing how their (aqours and million live) outfits were opposites. arisha explains they were wearing their blue checked miraboku outfits from the sunshine s2 op while aimi explains million live were wearing red checks

aimi says their expressions were really good and arisha says the way they each sat showed their personality

konachi says everyone's hands were beautiful lol

arisha says there wasnt a lot of choreography but it was actually hard trying to figure out the nuances and the timings

aimi's highlighted song is tracing defender because the dance was so good. arisha says when she heard the performers were specially chosen as dancers she knew that that girl from aqours would be chosen

aimi says that komagata yuri isn't a member who has a dance image from million live but she really practised hard by herself all the way to the real thing

arisha says ryouran victory road and the others immediately enthusiastically agree

it was directly after harmonics and kawaguchi really wanted to get back to the monitors so she could see it

they talk about the lyrics and konachi says she wishes everyone could have had a verse even though it would have been a bother and arisha says that would be a song that would never end (aimi: well if there's a next time...)

kawaguchi's is cotton candy eieioh! arisha says normally for collab songs the main part is given to those who didnt sing it originally but for this one only ruby-chan did it for some reason and the other performers were just supporting her lol

kawaguchi says they were all so tiny and cute... and aimi says everyone from cinderella were really putting all their energy into it

konachi's is oh my god by SHHis and how hyped everyone was. kawaguchi loves this one too. konachi talks about everyone seeing it at rehearsals and being glued to the monitors to watch

aimi talks about wanting to hug people because there were so many of them and she's the type to like hugging something when she sleeps. so she ended up hugging girls who were on the same iem line as her. for genepuro it was kouno hiyori-chan, and for the real thing it was koizumi moeka-chan!

she noticed that they both have the same body type, slender and a bit tall with high waists, which is maybe easier to hug? like they have good places to fit her arms? she asks if she's allowed to say this stuff and arisha's like "just about"

kawaguchi says that at shinymas 5.5th anniversary live she made milk tea for her unit, CoMETIK, and it was well received so she made it again at ijigen. but when she brought it to them they said they'd drink it later and then forgot and went home

she likes tea so she boils it and makes it herself. for the milk she buys good milk when she's making it for others but cheap milk when its for herself lol

arisha talks about how aqours did READY!! and M@STERPIECE for imas. normally they dance in formations which they can remember from the view on stage, but for these they were dancing on the same spot the whole time which was difficult, so they were worrying and so decided to put the music on in the dressing room and practise

aimi agrees its difficult to remember things when theyre different to usual and arisha says imas-san's precise hand choreography is surprisingly hard. aimi says conversely love live-san's choreography is intimidating to the imas side

arisha says aqours and million live collabed on mitaiken horizon too, and they had wondered if they would be able to learn the dance. aqours had actually learned a more simplified dance for it themselves so they could match, which was refreshing

konachi talks about how hasunosora had to leave partway through genepuro, and so the others from love bon appétit taught her a lot and they were so kind. there were a lot of stage entrances and she didn't know which one was hers but they showed her where to go

aimi says it was just a really warm time. when she watched the monitors and saw girls from other units she'd think they were cute. at first she thought it was going to be a proper uta gassen (song contest) and they were gonna fight but everyone just had fun together

they talk about how imas and love live don't sing songs from other groups usually so this was a really passionate time. they want to do it again!

they all say their talk went by so quickly. arisha says they have like three hours of talking in them and then they realise they wouldn't even be able to watch the whole performance in that time. aimi says they should have milk tea together

aimi says she thinks itll be tough for staff but they all want to do it again!

ijigen radio (calling the imas seiyuu by family name since i dont know nicknames)

inoue says kan-san was amazing in how she always practised her choreography right up until she had to go on. kankan gets flustered and says inoue and shuka are amazing as well and they made her feel really comfortable. shuka says theyre both cute

inoue, shuka, and kankan were the first collab unit singing let's sail away on day 1, and theyre really grateful they got to be the top batters

after watching a clip of their performance kankan tells them how the other hasunosora members kept making fun of her for blocking her face with her hand mic when looking through the telescope she had made with her hands lmao (also brought up on mirapa radio). inoue tells her the actual move was making a telescope with one hand (with the mic in the other)

shuka says when aqours were given the choreography for dreamy color it was a kind of dance they hadnt really done before, so they thought it was nice to have grown a little. kankan and inoue gush over how beautiful they were performing it

they talked about the cute lotus image of the eien no euphoria choreo and since kankan and inoue collabed on both it and let's sail away shuka complains its unfair and she wants to do the lotus moves too lol (kankan: i wanted you to join too 🥺)

shuka's top song that left an impression on her was doing aozora jumping heart with everyone to open day 1

kankan was really moved by the other members working together with the senpai during the collab songs. also! one of her friends from university was in sukumyu (minamino hana) and theyve always wanted to perform on the same stage together someday, so she was really happy for it to happen at ijigen. she watched the sukumyu songs while backstage and liked that they started off the second half

inoue liked going on the carts! shuka is jealous aqours didnt get a go on those special big carts

inoue says akarin teased her during a rehearsal of ijigen big bang one time when she happened to be next to her and she got obsessed and every rehearsal after tried to find her to keep going. shuka tries to tsukkomi this but says this is something only kitou-chan can do. kankan's like "this bond of theirs is nice" and shuka's like "idk about a Bond" and then inoue's like "our bond has deepened because of the teasing." shuka then recommends this method to get close to people since it was april

the next behind the scenes anecdote is titled "she barged into aqours' dressing room!?" and shuka's like "this one could only be mine guys" when the others try and make it a mystery

shuka says kurosawa tomoyo came to hang out in aqours' dressing room, since even though she voices an imas girl, she also voices you's cousin tsuki! which made shuka feel weird since it was like looking at two different people. she talks about how they hung out and took videos together and kankan adds she saw them and that they have the same vibes. inoue says they do have the same kind of fun approachable aura

kankan's anecdote was how she was able to take lots of photos with her senpai, but the most memorable was the one with cyaron. she really wanted to take a photo with them but she was scared to ask since theyre her senpai. she was just outside the dressing room when she saw them and she must have been staring because furirin-paisen asked what was up and that's when she was able to speak to them and finally ask for a photo, and thats how she was able to have the confidence to talk to other senpai too. she says aqours are really good at closing the distance and shes really grateful they all posted the photos with her on twitter

shuka says there was pressure not to mess up the songs from the other work, and they were worried how the fans would feel, but theyre really glad P and love live fans accepted them. but even then behind the scenes was a pain w but everyone had fun! thats how she'd sum it up. it was fun!

So,same thing but with their third solos / Just Believe! solos (my personal favorite set of solos they have so far) you know the drill,I typed a lot of these along with the new Niji trio options,updated Muse shuffle fes options and Aqours shuffle fes options with their second solos so I might post those some time too so here we goooo

Ayumu - LIKE IT! LOVE IT! (SetsuPomu. But also while I feel like Say Goodbye Namida is similar enough to LI!LI! it’s also still different enough for Ayumu to be out of place imo plus imagine Aguri with the megaphone that is all)

Kasumi - Märchen Star (Look me in the eyes and tell me that this performance wouldn’t be SO SO cute,that’s right you can’t bc just imagining it makes my heart melt and even tho again,Margaret is kind of slow like this one it would still be different enough and rlly nice to see)

Shizuku - I’m Still… (I had a hard time picking someone to sing this,but ultimately decided on Shizuku bc her voice is pretty and would suit the song well so yeah that’s why)

Karin - Aion no Uta (Just now realizing I’ve given Karin two very vocal heavy songs,but again this is one of my many favorites off this album and Miyutan’s Karin voice is SO beautiful I feel like her version of this song would be absolutely stellar)

Ai - Queendom (Compared to her other songs,including Diabolic muiler this song is kind of more mature than her solos so it would be different enough and again I feel like it would be an absolutely amazing performance to see live,especially since Nacchan is a p good dancer)

Kanata - Yagate Hitotsu no Monogatari (Another one that would be just spectacular to see,this is by far my favorite Just Believe solo and I would pay so much to see it performed by Kanata / Akarin no less,who already has a great voice just aaaaa if this happened I’d want this so so so bad)

Setsuna - Analog Heart (Not much to say on this one,I couldn’t think of who could sing this song sooo yeah this would just be cute and the dance is so funny to me I’d love to see any of the seiyuus do it,but I just picked Setsu last minute)

Emma - Aoi Canaria (Listen,we were absolutely ROBBED of Emma / Chunrun doing a Shioriko solo in the first one imo so again,in my imaginary version of a live that may happen let me have this it would be great I just know it Chunrun’s voice sounds amazing in Aion no Uta,so I know she’d do super well if she did Aoi Canaria)

Rina - Margaret (I don’t have much else to say besides I think this would just be precious,it’s different enough for it to be noticeably so but this is another one of my favorites off this album and Rina / Tanaka performing it would be rlly cute)

Shioriko - Say Good-Bye Namida (Shiopomu. Just Shiopomu. But not only that,I think it would just be fun and cute to see,plus it’s a lot different than Shio’s other solos but would still be a good performance that’s really it I just love Shiopomu a lot that’s the whole reason we didn’t get her performing Yume no Ippo,so in my head I get this)

Mia - Tanoshii no Tensai (For some reason I just think the idea of this performance would be so funny,since Mia is a much more chilled out character so seeing her be all like WOAH WOAH WOAH YEAH YEAH YEAH would be great to see,plus she does have a more upbeat solo so yknow weird but not TOO weird)

Lanzhu - Fire Bird (Again,tell me this wouldn’t be a great performance because it would be SO good to see,like it’s kind of mature and diva-y enough to work well with Lanzhu’s vibe but it strays enough from her other solos to be different enough I just know this performance would be so powerful and I’d love to see it)
