I like to think that all the bat siblings just randomly drop insane lore about themselves. Like- they all have so much going on that there's no way to update everyone on everything so whenever one person mentions something crazy that happened in passing, the rest of the bats that didn't know are super chill about it. Except Bruce. When he finds out something he doesn't know, he always freaks out a little bit (control freak).

(Tim taking his daily antibiotic)

Bruce (trying to remember if something happened on patrol): Are you injured?

Tim (casually): No I'm alright. I've just had to take these ever since I lost my spleen.

Jason: Word. Good to be careful I guess.

Bruce (internally panicking): You lost your spleen?

Tim: well, maybe lost is the wrong word. I'm pretty sure Ra's Al Ghul still has it in a jar somewhere.

Jason: Not even surprised. He's creepy like that.

Bruce: ??!??!?!?!!

(Dick, Cass, Tim, and Bruce after patrol one night)

Tim: Hey Dick that was a cool move you pulled back there

Dick: Oh that? Yeah I learned that when I was apprenticing for Deathstroke.

Cass (nodding): Skilled fighter.

Dick: Yeah, situation kinda sucked but oh well.

Bruce: (Trying to piece together when the fuck that happened)

Honestly I think it would work for having the family with the nanobots or the Titans and the bats both get involved. Either regular Teen Titans age for him (16) or typical reverse batkids age (10-13)

okay, let me just-

the apprentice arc from Teen Titans (2003) and the Renegade arc (Nightwing 1996 #112-#117) are different.

I have not seen the show and I need to re-read Renegade but this is more a general overview rather than a deep dive.

the version of events where Dick is forced to be Slade's apprentice because of the nanobots or whatever is from the show. he is never called Renegade (to my knowledge) during this arc. not that you can't call him that if you want to. but this is not where the name comes from.

Dick is not forced to be Renegade in the comics. you can, of course, have a plot line where he is in your fics or whatever for flavor, but in canon Dick is the one that becomes Renegade to secretly try and take down a group of villains.

in post-crisis canon this is also where he trains Rose.

(in the current canon he trains Rose when he's fired as Robin iirc? it's weird.)

the Renegade arc is directly why Blüdhaven got nuked. Slade was pissed that Dick had tried to turn his daughter against him and suggested that the nuke be dropped on Blüd, (because the group of villains was going to drop a nuke regardless for reasons,) to get revenge.

I am not talking about the quality of either of these stories nor am I trying to spark that discussion. this is simply to provide information that I am seeing is very lost.

I recommend just reading through the arc if you want to write something about Renegade as he is in the comics. I know reading a shit ton of comics can be overwhelming but the arc is like 6 issues. you can easily find it online and it won't take you long at all.

I will not lie, yes you will miss context of the shit happening around Dick at this time, the Crutches storyline is important to understanding his mindset at the time, but you don't need to read it to understand Renegade enough. (Dick does a pretty good job explaining his mental state in #112 himself too.)

there are a lot of events happening at once in this time-frame, UTRH and also Infinite Crisis, so it will be confusing in some aspects just because of that, but still. you'll understand it enough. (and hey, UTRH and Infinite Crisis should probably be on your reading list anyways. UTRH more so than IC but still.)

you don't have to be comic accurate when you write Renegade, I'm not making this post to say that fanon versions of Renegade are wrong and bad. I am simply trying to provide information and guide people in the right place if they do want to know the source material.

I will repeat again that this is not about the story quality of either arc and DO NOT start a conversation around Devin Grayson on or around this post. that is not what this is about and you know it.

"Robin." Slade murmured lowly.

Dick shook his head and didn't answer. He wasn't Robin anymore. Robin died many weeks ago, killed by Slade himself when the man forced him to pull a trigger for the very first time.

Slade sighed and Dick knew that he was annoying his master, inconvincing him. That he should answer him properly, stand up and force his hands to stop shaking but he couldn't bring himself to actually do it. He kept sitting on the ground, caked in a blood that wasn't his own and stared at the body of a man that just tried to kill him.

A man that would succed in killing him was it not for Slade.

"Dick," Slade tried again, voice so soft and gentle that Dick would cry if he wasn't feeling so numb.

The hand that touched his cheek was warm, not like the glove Slade always wore as Deathstroke and Dick blinked up at him, reaching a shaking hand to cover Slade's own.

His master stroked a thumb down his cheek. He didn't even seem to notice the blood Dick left on his skin.

"You did good." Slade praised, pressing a kiss to his forehead. "I'm here now. You're safe."

The buzz in Dick's ears makes him wonder if he really heard that. There's still the warmth of touch on his cheek and he's tempted to squeeze his eyes shut in anticipation of the slap which should come - it should, he messed up, he deserves it - but the brush of lips through the man's mask on his forehead suggest that Dick's master is not angry at him.

«I should be punished.» He observes simply. He hates it, he hates being confined or beaten, and lately he's grown to hate it so much, especially being locked in a tiny dark room, that he started obeying. Lately the punishments have become too much for him to bear, and Dick unable to take them, but he knows he deserves one now. What he doesn't deserve is to be touched so gently and told that he's alright.

«Sweetheart.» There's another hand coming up to cup Dick's other cheek, naturally bringing him to look up. Slade pulled up his mask. He doesn't look angry even if he's slightly frowning. «Why should I punish you for trying to save my life.»

Dick blinks slowly and realizes he's been gripping the man's wrist hard, so he relaxes it with a deep breath. he also realizes that yes. He was trying to... do that. Slade had been hit with a stun charge, strong enough to flatline a meta, and Dick...

«What you should have done is shoot that man in the head, not use yourself as a shield.» Slade continues, wiping more blood from Dick's face with his thumbs. «That is something I'm going to have to drill into your little head. I don't want to see this kind of stunt, ever again.» He leans down, touches their foreheads together. Dick's breath hitches and just like that he's clutching the man's wrists again, with both hands this time. «But for now you're alright. We'll talk about this another time.»

He's picked up like he weighed nothing, and just like that he's pressed against the solid wall of Slade's chest.

Dick keeps holding onto him tight, breathing slowly to keep himself from crying. He was about to die, he was. That man would have killed him wasn't it for that few seconds of hesitation... maybe because he suddenly found himself about to kill a teenager instead of the seven foot tall monster who just massacred the rest of his team. And that apparently gave Slade enough time to gather himself, his knife, and plunge it into that guy's throat. And that's all Dick's fault, but Slade is alright, and somehow that's all that matters to him now.
