Looking to commission a group portrait with complex poses & background!
If anyone is or knows of a digital artist who's capable of drawing diverse ages, body sizes + hair types, and also recognizable faces, please reach out!
Especially if they're poor & reliant on their art. I'm expecting this to be a $700+ piece and I want it to go to someone it'll make a difference for <3
For more details, I'm trying to get a picture that more accurately represents me as a whole being, multiplicity & disability included.
Each "character" ought to have my face, yet be distinctly their own person(shown in personality/poses/accessories/etc).
4-8 individuals. Toddler to adult. White, Black & Hispanic. Slim to fat(not "curvy," but accurately fat). Short & long, wavy and textured hair.
Group photo style. Like a bunch of friends/family piling on each other for a silly photo.
References: I'll have several photos of me/my hair in different states + stock photos. And written details of important personality traits.
I'm open to paying a separate cost for a design phase since there's a lot of space for artist interpretation and that's extra labor, especially if you'd prefer to sketch out a few options before diving in/agreeing to do the main piece.
Would appreciate some signal boosting if you've got lots of artists in your circle! Or even just letting me know of a good site I can more easily search for artists doing commissions would be great <3

[authorâs note]: hey guys! iâm really new to the writing scene so kind words are appreciated! srsly just testing my writing style out and wanted to just post something to motivate me to keep writing. hope u like it. <3
also thank u ari for the inspo and that bomb ass album that saved twenty-twenty. now we just need biden to get elected.
ps. donât forget to vote! <3
Stevie,
First and foremost, I want you to know how proud of you I am. You have become the man youâve said you become, the one I always knew you would. You have finally seen what the rest of us see.
A good man.
The soul you carry within you shines brighter than Iâve ever seen. Just for that only, Iâm thankful for the time weâve spent together. Maybe one day, Iâll be brave enough to tell you this without hiding behind the comfort of this notebook. She wonât spill my secrets, fortunate for me.
Some days you have no idea how badly I want to tell you. I think itâs on the days I discover a new fleck of green in your eyes or maybe when you show up to class with a cup of coffee for me without request.
More. More. More.
More. More. More.
Itâs selfish of me, that much I know. More days than not, I would say you give too much of yourself away. Always wanting to appease everyone, you, Steven Rogers, the bridge to making the people around you happier than they walked in. Even when Bucky drags you into his nonsense bullshit, you say yes without hesitation.
Iâve got not a a clue on how you continue on, how you still remain you when you tend to spread yourself so thin. Who watches out for you? Who cares for you? Who loves the almighty, selfless Rogers?
For me, itâs much easier to pretend you carry too much on your plate than to deal with the rejection I would receive from you. Youâre just too good, more than I deserve. More than I would be willing to take. I know I couldnât possibly give you what you deserve but, I hope that one day you might see me differently. You would see me more than the light Iâve painted myself in.
Even though the shade is lovely, I want to be deeper. Deeper into you on a level which only seems unattainable at this point.
A forever friend. To be in your life, just as a friend, is an reward in itself.
But someday I hope you would love me in the same way I do. Itâs all a love struck girl could do. Hope for the best, bet be prepared for the downfall.
With much love, your forever friend.
Tearing the page away from the binding of the overfilled notebook, dispensing it in the first empty drawer you could find, you abandoned the feelings as soon as the penâs ink bleed out dry.
âYou know it would just be easier to tell him how you feel.â You peaked up at the sound of her voice, before realizing she was looming over you, watching your write the letter.
Your supposed, secret letter.
âNat, please. No.â Opening the drawer, she grabbed the letter but was surprised with just how many she found.
âYouâve got to be kidding me. Youâve written about him multiple times?â You sank in the soft, plush material of your seat hoping that just maybe it would begin to swallow you whole. Hopefully, fast enough were you wouldnât have to endure the rest of the conversation. One you had been trying to avoid, for the past three years.
âItâs nothing Nat, just forget it.â Just like a Romanov, she couldnât leave it alone. Even if she tried it was laced in her blood to see any little thing through.
âYou really shouldnât wait so long. A window might close for you, much sooner than you think.â With a curious eyebrow lifted, you felt your breath leave you.
âWhat does that supposed to mean?â Steve certainly deserved the best and you knew it was only time for him to figure out you would never be enough for him.
âPeggy Carter.â Peggy.
The one girl of a sea of many who had been enamored by Steve. He never really seemed to spend anytime with the women who vied for his attention, but Peggy was surely different than the rest.
Even if Steve was oblivious when it came to the advances everyone would make on him, he saw Peggy. Considering she was the most beautiful woman you had ever seen, she intimidated you. God, did she ever.
On numerous occasions she and Steve had gone out, and even though he assured you they were just friends you were starting to believe he was only trying to protect your feelings. As a friend.
He had never cancelled on you once for her and he would tell you if he had started to date someone, just like he had before.
Even though the entire three years youâd known him he only had one serious girlfriend and after eight months, the pair broke up and even now he still didnât budge on why they broke up.
âSteve can do whatever he wants with her. Heâs a single man. Heâs gone out with her before and heâll probably go with her again.â Then Sam was the next to speak up, dismissing the total bullshit spouting from your mouth.
âCanât you see he doesnât want to? The damn man follows you around like a goddamn puppy.â Okay, when did he even come in here?
âGod, fuck, no he doesnât. He would have said something by now, heâs had three years and itâs been nothing but radio silence.â With an all knowing smirk, Sam proposed a new concept into question.
âIt has been three years. So, have you ever said anything to him?â
Shit. Fuck you, Wilson.
âW-Well, not exactly.â Sam didnât have to say anything in response. You knew he was right and you hated it.
Your unwillingness still stood for you, there was just no way he actually would reciprocate your feelings.
âListen, I think it would be really good for the both of you to air everything out. Peggy is sinking her claws in him and it isnât too long before they get stuck. Just talk to him.â You nodded silently, but you werenât sure if youâd ever have the courage to.
â
Emptiness.
Itâs all you seemed to feel today. Following you around was a dark cloud, looming over you. Wishing you could be anywhere but your own body. Nothing in particular happened to make you deserve the feeling you were granted with. It just so happened to be one of those days.
From the moment you got out of bed â or rather stayed in bed until four in the afternoon, you felt like anything you would have done just didnât feel enough. The feeling was fleeting, never staying for more than a day or so, but it made the day drag on. Never ending.
Your muscles sore, body aching from the lack of activity your presumed. Or maybe you had built it in your head too.
Thankfully for you, Nat was busy helping Bucky move into his new place the entire day. She asked if you wanted to help, but mentally you didnât feel you would be useful for anyone. Simply, telling her you would hang back, claiming you had another an essay to write.
Which you did, you werenât completely lying, but there was more than your sour mood to blame for your dismissal of social interaction.
You hated to be that girl, the one who needed the presence of men. Specifically, the company of one very beautiful, blue eyed one.
His absence in your life the past few weeks felt heavier on you than you thought it would. You knew from Samâs intel he had been hanging out with Peggy more and more. He said the two of them were getting close, mercifully sparing you the details.
You hated itâs youâd become. A girl so damn struck over a boy who was giving his attention elsewhere. Upset you were though. Before even if he was busy between classes and his internship at the gallery, he would still text to check up on you.
Now, it was nothing but radio silence letting you draw conclusions on your own. Very, very dangerous territory for you to travel to.
Steve and you are just friends. Get. Over. It.
You thought youâd be alone the rest of the Saturday, especially since it was nearly midnight. Figuring Nat was staying over at Buckyâs and Wanda leaving earlier in early hours of the morning to see her boyfriend for the entire weekend.
Then, an incredibly drunk Steve stumbled into your quaint apartment, the thoughtfully sweetness in him blubbering out with the alcohol flooding through his system. It was like he was on overdrive. More than ready to crash at any given moment.
You had enough when Steve started shamelessly raiding your kitchen, but you remained on the couch attempting to maintain some distance between the two of you. He had a history of being incredibly handsy whenever he had bit too much to drink.
Stumbling his way over to you, almost tripping on the rug, until he was basically cuddling up to your side. His arms latched tightly around you, pulling you into him. Not spared a choice, not that youâd want one.
The security of being wrapped up to him wasnât something you ever grew tired of. You donât think there would ever be a time you would ever be capable of turning him away.
âIâve missed you. Itâs been too long.â His soft tone, penetrating the tiny resistance you held towards him. âMe too. I was starting to think you disappeared on me, bubba.â
âNever.â His iron grip holding so tight like he was afraid youâd slip right through.
âIs everything alright?â Trying to pull from him, but Steve seemed unable to let you go. You whispered in his ear, caressing his back.
âI think so.â
âHere, let me grab you cup of joe and some water. Okay? Iâll be right back.â Leaving him a kiss on the cheek, before heading him into the kitchen.
If you had been around him recently, perhaps you would be more in tune with how he was feeling. Then the guilt sept in.
âSweetheart, do you know where the phone charger is? Itâs not by the recliner.â You heard him shout, trying to stop your heart from hammering into your stomach.
Just make him some coffee, sober him up, until he crashes.
Steve always seemed to be a lightweight and somehow whenever he did decide to drink he always found himself routing his way into your home. You thought it was simply for accident alone. The bar he frequented at was only a few block from you.
The past few times he would just stumble into your bedroom, immediately passing out in your soft, silky sheet. Now, he seemed to have more pressing matters at hand.
âCheck the drawers, Stevie. I think thereâs one you left around here somewhere.â You grabbed the filters and the grounds out, brewing the coffee. Soon, with a black cup of coffee and a water bottle in hand you took note of just how quite he was being.
He was never this silent and it was freaking you out.
âAre you sure youâre o-â
Just like that.
Fuck.
Hunched over, practically on his knees, he read over the endless letters you wrote about him. Confessions never meant to be seen by him. You lost track of how many you had written over the past few years once realized how irrevocably in love with him you are.
He didnât realize you had found him and you were suddenly paralyzed. Unaware of your presence he continued to read through them and his expression was unrecognizable. One youâd never seen from him before, and you didnât quite know how to react.
No. He wasnât grimacing nor did he seem to be elated either. He just stood there just like you, afraid what would happen next.
What did this mean for the two of you? Your entire relationship was purely riding on whatever happened next.
Softly, with a gentle hand, he sifted through them all like he was looking for something specifically. Steve let them fall to the hardwood floors as your shaking hands could no longer support the weight of the dainty coffee cup he had actually sculpted himself.
The glass shattering everywhere, several pieces making their way towards him, thankfully not fiercely enough to penetrate his skin.
Truly, you had never been more sorry than when he looked up at you with tears in his eyes. Threatening to spill over. Because of you.
You didnât have to be told, you already knew.
Carefully, Steve stood up making his way over to you around the shattered mug. Still you couldnât bring yourself to move. Simply just watching him until he was right in front of you â more silent than youâd ever seen him before.
âThose were about me. Werenât they?â You nodded having no reason to lie other than to protect yourself from a rejection you been hoping to spare yourself from.
âI didnât want you to find out like this. Or at all really.â Your resolve dropping instantly when Steve took a step further gripping by your hips, pulling you closer.
âWhy not?â He questioned you, again. Almost like he needed a verbal affirmation of every secret he had just read.
Unintentionally, stealing your soul served for him on a silver platter.
âI know how youâd feel about me, Steve. Itâs not how I want it to be and itâs okay.â You remove yourself from him, traveling to the other side of the living room. Suddenly, the apartment seemed suffocating with him in it. âIâm fine, Steve.â
Hearing him sigh in frustration only furthered your immense feeling of being a burden to him.
Youâre just one more obstacle he has to deal with.
âOne of them dated back for over two years ago. Two fucking years.â His harsh tone, piercing through you like a knife.
âI know. I should have told you.â You whispered, wishing you could disappear into any abyss that would take you. Deeply wishing you just didnât have to endure for the rest of this conversation. Wishing you could have stopped him from opening that stupid drawer. âI tell you everything, but I just couldnât bring myself to speak about this. Look at how youâre reacting? How could you blame me when every fear I have about this is justified?â
You really should have kept those elsewhere, not your open, public living room.
âBecause itâs us. Iâm always here for you.â He was still crying through broken words and you didnât know why. Almost like you had shattered his resolve and his control leaving with it.
âNot lately. Youâve been otherwise occupied.â Suddenly find the plant in the corner of the room. It certainly werenât trying to distract yourself from the insatiable cerulean eyes.
The breathtaking british woman wasnât even here and as soon as she was brought up â there was a wall. Seperating, you from whatever was between the two of you.
âThis isnât my fault. You never said anything. How was I supposed to know you feel that way about me?â He tried to make his way towards you but you just stalked off in the other direction. Circling around the living room like a coward.
âIt didnât matter though, did it? You found someone perfect for you regardless of how you feel.â God, you wish he would just leave so you could let the dam break.
âNo. You donât get to do that. Since the moment I met you I only had eyes for you, but you never seemed like you were interested. So, I dropped it. Okay? You never left me a crumb to think you would ever want to be more than just friends.â
âYou were my best friend. You still are. No matter how I felt, it could never outweigh the need I have for you to be in my life.â He sighed, rubbing his hands over his face. Trying to figure out what was next for the both of you. Steve always had to initiate and this time was no different.
âPeggy told me tonight she wants to be exclusive.â His confession washing over you like a ton of bricks. Crushing you.
You really couldnât have any ill feeling towards her, she was just doing what you lacked the courage and the tenacity to do.
âBut I didnât really know what to do.â He took quiet steps towards you, not wanting to spook you. He voice not no longer held the a warmth of teddy bear, but a man on a mission rather took over.
Steve kept quiet until he had you backed up into a corner, no escape route in vision for you.
ââCause thereâs this other beautiful woman, absolutely breathtaking â and I just I really needed to know how she felt. If I had known before, Â I never would have gone anywhere else.â His hand caressing your soft, plump lips. Pulling on your bottom lip with his thumb, sending you into a frenzy.
âThen, I just wanted to forget about everything until Sam called me. Three beers deep, when he told me of a drawer filled with letters I should take a look at.â You could feel his breath on you, temple pressed against yours.
âI just need to hear you say it. Just once.â Taking it a step forward, intertwining your finger with his own.
âI love you.â It was all he needed as he sealed his own affirmation with a sweet kiss, inking your lips with all of his love.

this might not be the right place to ask because i cant remember if you have a wizard oc yourself but does anyone have any tips for developing a wizard oc? i love my girl and i want to develop her character/backstory, any tips would be appreciated!!
I HAVE PLENTY OF WIZARD OCS ANON dont worry đŠââ¤ď¸âđâđŠ ill try to take you through the process of making mine!!
(which...that reminds me... i should brush up on the template i had to see if i can make something out of it)
â the first thing i try to establish is their primary and secondary school!
i know in canon secondary schools aren't brought up as much or regarded as something that can be utilized outside of what people think you should train for maximum potential (feint, tower shield, etc) but i always like using it as a means to establish their personality!
the question i ask myself is... what is their relationship to magic and how does their primary and secondary school tie into it?
for example - diana is my death wizard who has a secondary in ice, which makes her seem easygoing, patient, and slow to anger.
another is iridian - my ice wizard with a myth secondary. the myth secondary helps me get the point across that she is a thinker, someone who is creative based off the information we've been given in canon.
i think knowing about the schools characteristics and how it can apply to your characters via the schools of magic they choose is a good way to flesh out their personalities :^D
i also think it allows the opportunity to develop them more - and even those who choose to only have one can have their reasons to fall back on it.
â the second thing i try to consider is where in the story do i want to input them in?
with the current world out (lemuria) we have 4 arcs to choose from! i try to separate my characters from my scions (that means these characters are the ones summoned from earth and are present in arcs 1 through 4) and my general characters (characters that can be added into the story in certain places, taken out of the story, or can influence other wizard's stories)
that being said.. don't be afraid to mess around with canon a little bit!! ki doesn't even keep track of their canon right lol . its OUR city now anon
ive seen people have multiple characters travel the spiral, characters go into groups to defeat the villains of arcs 1 through 4, change certain parts of canon to make more sense, add stuff into already established lore just for the hell of it!
the world is your oyster anon... do whatever u please đŠââ¤ď¸âđâđŠ
â third thing i try to establish is their style, which i ... tend to fall back on my character design capabilities on lol. i don't use the in-game clothing and tend to design all my wizard ocs clothing to better reflect their styles and personalities!
i do think style is a big part of it though... what they wear, why they wear it, and what it says about them as a person.
i tend to fall back on poofy sleeves with ribbons, or white button downs with a vest to match. i usually take to pinterest to try and gauge what they would wear though...!
(and - take into account the weather for where they are placed in. iridian is stationed in polaris, so while she does wear stuff that is made for a colder climate, she does still want to look cute - that is how you develop them in smaller ways!)
â you can even have them interact with other npcs or canonly established characters! ive seen lots of people draw their characters interacting with ones that have appeared in canon - its a good way to see how your character interacts with others!
and of course... if u ever want your ocs and mine to interact... đ my dms are open anon .
ANYWAYS... i hope that helps you anon!! anyone else is free to add onto this post to help them out more <3
#val.answers#wizard101#w101#just in case someone in the tag needs this#ough this is a bit of a long post. oops#I HOPE THIS IS WHAT U WERE ASKING FOR ANONNNN#i make so many wiz ocs its actually crazy . i just dont share them a lot here because im shy </3#but yeah!! remember to have fun because in the end thats all that matters kissy

RWBY Recaps: Volume 8 âDarkâ
Welcome back, everyone! Can you believe it's been six weeks already? I can't. Something something the uncomfortable passage of time during a pandemic as emphasized by a web-series.
But we're here to talk about RWBY the fictional story, not RWBY the cultural icon. At least, we will in a moment. First, I'd like to acknowledge that shaky line between the two, growing blurrier with every volume. A sort of good news, bad news situation.
The bad news â to get that out of the way â is that we cannot easily separate RWBY from its authors and those authors have, sadly, been drawing a lot of negative attention as of late. This isn't anything new, not at all, but I think the unexpectedly long hiatus gave a lot of fans (myself included) the chance to think about Rooster Teeth's failings without getting distracted by their biggest and brightest production. There's a laundry list of problems here â everything from the behavior of voice actors to the quality of their merch â but as a sort of summary issue, I'd like to highlight the reviews that continue to pop up on websites like Glassdoor, detailing the toxic, sexist, crunch-obsessed environment that RT employees are forced to work in. A lot of these websites requires a login to read more than a page of reviews, but you can check out a Twitter thread about it here.Â
Now, I want to be clear: I'm not bringing this up as a way to shame anyone enjoying RWBY. This isn't a simplistic claim of, "The authors are Problematic⢠and therefore you can't like the stuff they produce." Nor is this meant to be a catch-all excuse for RWBY's problems. If it were, I'd have dropped these recaps years ago. I'm of the belief that audiences maintain the right to both praise and criticize the work they're given, regardless of the context in which that work was produced. At the end of the day, RT has presented RWBY as a finished product and, more than that, presents it as an excellent product, one worth both our emotional investment and our money (whether in the form of paying for a First account, or encouraging us to buy merch, attend cons, etc.) I'll continue to critique RWBY as needed, but I a) wanted fans to be at least peripherally aware of these issues and b) clarify that my use of "RT" in statements like, "I can't believe RT is screwing up this badly" is meant to be a broad, nebulas acknowledgement that someone in the company is screwing up, either creatively (doesn't have the skill to write a good scene) or morally (hasn't created an environment in which other creators are capable of crafting a good scene). The real, inner workings of such companies are mostly a secret to their audiences and thus it's near impossible for someone like me â random fan writing these for fun as a casual side hobby â to accurately point fingers. Hence, broad "RT." I just wanted to clarify that when I use this it's as a necessary placeholder for whoever is actually responsible, not a damnation of the overworked animator breaking down in a bathroom. Heavy stuff, but I thought it was necessary (or at least worthwhile) to acknowledge this issue as we head into the second half of the volume.
Now for the good news: RWBY has reached 100 episodes! For any who may not know, 100 is a pretty significant number in the TV world because, when talking about prime time programming, it guarantees syndicated reruns. Basically, networks don't want audiences to get burned out with a show â changing the channel when it comes on because ugh, I've seen this already, recently too â and 100 episodes allows for a roughly five month run without any repeats, making it very profitable. RWBY is obviously not a television show and doesn't benefit from any of this (hell, modern television doesn't benefit from this as much as it used to, not in the age of streaming), but the 100 episode threshold is still ingrained in American culture. Beyond just being a nice, rounded number, it is historically a measure of huge success and I can't imagine that RT isn't aware of that. Regardless of what we think of RWBY's current quality, this is one hell of a milestone and should be applauded.
All that being said... RWBY's quality is definitely still lacking lol.
Our 100th episode is titled "Dark" â keeping with the one word titles, then â and I'd like to emphasize that, as a 100th episode, it definitely delivers in terms of plot. There's plenty of action, important character beats, and at least one major reveal, everything we'd expect from a milestone and a Part II premiere. The animation also continues to be noteworthy for its beauty, as I found myself admiring many of the screenshots I took for this recap. There are certainly things to praise. The only problem (one we're all familiar with by now) is that these small successes are situated within a narrative that's otherwise falling apart. It's all good stuff... provided you ignore literally everything else surrounding it.
But let's dive into some examples. We open on Qrow starting, awoken by the thunder outside. Robyn has been watching him and makes a peppy comment about how none of them will be sleeping tonight, followed by a more serious, "Sounds bad out there." Yeah, it does sound bad, especially when they all know â thanks to Ruby's message back in Volume 7 â that this is due to Salem's arrival. I think a lot of the fandom has forgotten that little detail because people often discuss Qrow as if he is entirely ignorant of what is going on outside his cell. Even if we were to assume that he's forgotten all about the pesky Salem issue (the horror of Clover's death overriding everything else, perhaps) he still knows that Tyrian is running loose in a heat-less city with a creepy storm going on and, from his perspective, the Very Evil Ironwood is still running the show. So it's bad, which begs the question of why Qrow (and Robyn, for that matter) hasn't displayed an ounce of legitimate worry for everyone he knows out there. Thus far, their interactions have centered entirely around Qrow's misplaced blame and Robyn's terrible attempts to lighten the mood, despite the fact that a war is raging right beyond that wall. It's another example of RWBY's inability to manage tone properly, to say nothing of balancing the multiple concerns any one character should be trying to juggle. Just as it rankles that Ruby and Yang don't seem to care about what has happened to their uncle, Qrow likewise doesn't seem to care about what might be happening to his nieces. When did we reach a point where these relationships are so broken that someone can be arrested/chucked into a deadly battle and the others just... ignore that?
So Robyn's otherwise innocuous comment immediately reminds me of how badly the narrative has treated these conflicts and, sadly, things don't improve much from here. We are thankfully spared more of Robyn's jokes when Qrow realizes that what he's hearing can't be thunder. A second later, Cinder blasts through the wall â called it! â and Qrow instinctively transforms.Â
The only downside to this moment is that the whole ceiling falls down on Qrow and the others because APPARENTLY these cells don't have tops on them. Seriously. As far as I can recall we don't see the stone breaking through the forcefield somehow and this looks pretty open to me.
If it is... you're telling me these crazy powerful fighters who practice landing strategies and leap tall buildings in a single bound â
â can't just hop over this mildly high electric fence to get out? Qrow can't just fly away?
We're, like, two minutes in, folks.
We transfer to Nora's perspective as she wakes up, seeing Klein giving her the IV. He tells her not to worry, that "you and your friend are going to be just fine." What friend? Penny? Klein went upstairs prior to Weiss hugging Whitley or Penny crash landing outside. I had thought them bursting through the door with another unconscious friend was the first time he learned what the big bang outside was, but apparently not.
Penny is, obviously, a mess. While I now understand the choice to make her blood such an eye-catching color when that's crucial to the Hound's hunt, I still think it looks strange visually. Like someone has taken a copy of RWBY and painted over it. It doesn't look like it fits the art style. More than that, it implies some rather complicated things about Penny's humanity, especially in a volume focused around her being a "real girl." Real enough for Maiden powers, but with obviously inhuman blood that isn't even referred to as "bleeding." Penny "leaks" instead.
Toss in the fact that she's literally an android who is made up of tech â recall the running gags about her being heavy, or it hurts to fist-bump her, to say nothing of keeping things like multiple blades inside her body â yet Klein says that her "basic anatomy" is the same and he can "stitch up that wound."
I'm sorry, what? Whatever Penny looks like on the inside, it's not going to resemble a human woman's anatomy, and Klein might be able to stitch the outer layer of skin she's got, but that won't do anything to fix whatever metal bits have been broken underneath. Penny isn't a human-robot hybrid, she's a robot with an aura. Penny has knives in her back, rockets in her feet, and a super computer behind her eyes. When our clip introduced that Klein would be the one to help Penny, my initial reaction was, "Seriously? He's a butler and a doctor and an engineer?" But RWBY didn't even try to get away with a Super Klein explanation, they just waved away Penny's very obvious, inhuman anatomy. Yeah, I'm sure "stitching up" an android wound is just like giving Nora her IV. I hope the surgical sutures he used are extra strong!
In an effort to not entirely drag this episode, I do appreciate that Whitley is allowed an "ugh" moment about the non-blood covering his shirt without anyone calling him out on it. That felt like the sort of thing the show would usually try to make a character feel guilty about and I'm glad that, for once, he was just allowed to be frustrated without comment.
Then the power goes out and May calls, which raises questions about what state the CCTS is in and when scrolls are available to our protagonists vs. when they're not. But whatever. She's checking in because she just "saw another bombing run light up the Kingdom" and â
Wait. Bombing? Salem is bombing the city? I know we've seen explosions in the sky, but I'd always just attributed that to evil aesthetic. Why does this dialogue sound like it's from a World War II film and not a fantasy sci-fi show about literal monsters launching a ground attack?
May looks pretty against the sky though. I like her hair color against that purple.
I'm admittedly grasping at positives here because we finally return to her "You have to choose" ultimatum and â surprise! â May has pulled back completely. Ruby says that once they've helped Penny, "We'll...we'll do something!" which is once again her avoiding making a decision. Ruby still refuses to choose, instead falling back on generic, optimistic pep talks. They'll figure out how to stop Salem later. They'll think about the impact of telling the world later. They'll choose who to help later. Ruby keeps pushing these problems into the future where, she hopes, a perfect, magical solution will have appeared for her to latch onto. When that continues to not happen, others pressuring her to actually do something and stop waiting for perfection â Ironwood, Yang, May â she panics and continues stalling for time. Wait an episode and the narrative supports her in this.
Because initially May was forcing Ruby to decide. Now, May enables her desire to keep putting things off. "Don't beat yourself up, kid. At this point, I don't know how much is left to be done." That's the exact opposite of what May believed last episode, that there was still so much work and good to do for the people of Mantle. This is precisely what the show did with Yang and Ren's scenes too, having people call Ruby out... but then return to a message of, 'Don't worry, you're actually doing just fine' before Ruby is forced to actually change.
None of which even touches on May calling her "kid" in this moment. That continues to be a convenient way of absolving Ruby of any responsibility. When she wants to steal airships or Amity Tower, she's an adult everyone should listen to, the leader of this war. When the story wants to absolve her of previously mentioned flaws, she becomes a kid who shouldn't "beat herself up." I said years ago that RWBY couldn't continue to let the group be both children and adults simultaneously, yet here we are.
So that was a thoroughly disappointing scene. Ruby gets her moment to look sad and defeated, listing "the grimm, the crater, Nora, Penny" as problems she doesn't know how to solve. Note that 'Immortal witch attacking the city I've helped trap here' isn't included in that list. Ruby is still ignoring Salem herself and no one in the group is picking up where May left off, challenging her to do more than wring her hands over things others are already trying to take care of: Ironwood is fighting the grimm, May has gone off to help the crater, Klein is patching up Nora and Penny. Ruby, as one flawed individual, should not be expected to come up with a solution to everything, but she does need to stop acting like she can come up with a solution to everything when it matters most (office scene) and rejecting others' solutions when they ask for her help (Ironwood, May).
If it feels like I'm dragging the flawed, traumatized teenager too much, it's not in an effort to ignore those aspects of her identity. Rather, it's because she's also the licensed huntress who wrested control from a world leader and violently demanded she be put in charge of this battle. Ruby, by her own actions, is now responsible for dealing with these problems, or admitting she was wrong and letting others take the lead, without purposefully derailing their plans. She doesn't get to suddenly go, "I don't know," cry a little, and get sympathetic pats.
But of course that's precisely what happens, courtesy of Weiss.
During this whole scene I kept wondering why no one was celebrating Nora waking up, especially when Ruby outright mentions her. Have they just not noticed given all the Penny drama? Because Nora absolutely woke up.
Aaaand went back to sleep, I guess. What was the point of that POV shot? No worries though, she'll wake up again in a minute.
Willow arrives and announces that they can fix the power (and Penny) using the generator at the edge of the property. I'm convinced RT doesn't actually know what a generator is because the characters are acting like it's some super special device that only richy-rich could possibly have. Whitley says that it's the SDC executives who have their "own power supply" and that it's "extremely unfair." Now, don't get me wrong, a good generator powering large portions of your house can run you 30k+, but you can also get one that plugs into your extension cord and powers your fridge for a couple hundred. There's absolutely a class issue here, just not the one Whitley and Weiss seem to be commenting on. They make a generator sound like the sort of device that only a politician-CEO could possible have and it's weird.
Likely, it sounds weird because it's a choppy way of getting Whitley to bring up the wealth disparity so he can then go, 'That's right! We're crazy rich with a company housing tons of ships! We can use those to evacuate Mantle.' Awkwardness aside, I do like that the Schnee wealth is being used for good purposes, but... evacuate where? To the city currently under attack by a giant whale? In a RWBY that wasn't determined to demonize Ironwood, this would have been a great plot point during the office scene instead, with Weiss offering her services to Ironwood, even if the group decides that a continued evacuation still isn't possible.
Instead, we get it here from Whitley. Do I need to point out the obvious? That Whitley is the MVP of this episode? He's done more good in an HOUR than the group has managed in a year. Give this kid some training and make him a huntsmen instead.
We're given a (very pretty!) shot of the shattered moon because it wouldn't be RWBY if we weren't continually reminded that gods once wiped out humanity before destroying part of a celestial body... and absolutely no one talks about that lol.
Blake's coat might not make any sense for her color scheme, but it does make her easy to spot as she and Ruby run across the grounds. Oh my god, they're actually doing something together! It only took eight years. They even get a lovely talk where Blake admits how much she looks up to Ruby, despite her being younger, and once again I'm struck at how much more I would have loved this scene if it had appeared elsewhere in the series. It is, indeed, as sweet and emotional as all the RWBY GIF-ers are claiming... provided you overlook that this is the exact opposite of what Ruby needs to hear right now. She doesn't need to hear that she's more mature and reliable than her elders when she's functioning under a "We don't need adults" mentality. She doesn't need to hear that not knowing what to do is totally fine, not when that led to her turning on Ironwood, despite not knowing how to stop Salem. She doesn't need to hear that "doing something" â doing anything â is a strength, because Ruby keeps avoiding the big problems for smaller ones she's comfortable with, like standing by Penny's bedside instead of deciding between Mantle and Atlas. Blake's speech is heartfelt, but it's a speech that suits a Beacon days Ruby who is having some doubts about her leadership skills, not the girl whose impulsive â and now lack of â actions is having world-wide repercussions. Everyone is babying Ruby to a staggering degree. It's like if we had a med show where the doctor is standing by the bedside of a coding patient, fretting between two treatments. 'Don't worry,' their colleague says, patting their shoulder. 'I've always looked up to you. You'll do something when you're ready' and then they continue to watch the patient, you know, die.
Also: who does Ruby look up to? Everyone talks about how much they depend on and trust Ruby, but who does Ruby look to for guidance? A number of her problems stem from the fact that she has rejected the advice of everyone who has tried to help her improve: Qrow, Ozpin, Ironwood, even Yang. Ruby is presented as the pinnacle of what to strive for in a leader, rather than a leader who has only been doing this for two years and still has a great deal to learn.
Anyway, they get the generator on and the Hound shows up.
I am begging RT to just make RWBY a horror story. All their best scenes the last three years have been horror I am bEGGING â
Anyway, while Ruby waits to be eaten we cut to Willow and Klein, the former of which is reaching for her bottle, pulling back, reaching again, all while her hand shakes. This is good. This is what we should have gotten with Qrow. Which isn't to say that their (or anyone's) addiction should be identical, but rather that this is a far more engaging and complex look at addiction than what our birb got. Willow tells us that she doesn't drink in the dark despite bringing the bottle with her; tries to resist drinking when she's scared and ultimately fails. Qrow just decided to stop drinking after decades of addiction, seemingly for no reason, and that was that. Why is a side character we only met this volume written better than one of the main cast?
Blake manages to call Weiss about the Hound and she asks if Whitley can handle the airships without her. I mean, I assume so given that Weiss is looking at the bookshelves while Whitley does all the work lol. He makes a teasing comment about how he can if she can handle that grimm and she comments that they still need to work on his "attitude."
No they don't. Weiss stuck a weapon in her kid brother's face. Whitley made a joke. Even if Weiss' comment is likewise meant to be read as teasing, it's clear that we've bypassed any meaningful conversation between them. That hug was supposed to be a Fix Everything moment even though, as I've laid out elsewhere, it didn't even come close.
We cut back to Ruby getting thrown through a wall into the backyard and the Hound creepily coming after her. She's freaked out by this clearly abnormal grimm and Blake is weirdly... not? "It's just a grimm. Just focus!" Uh, it's obviously not. Have we reached the traumatized, sleep-deprived point where the group is sinking into full-blown denial? I wouldn't be surprised. They've been awake for like... 40+ hours.
Because the Hound knocks Ruby out with a single hit. Just, bam, she's down. "Focusing" is not the solution here.
Weiss calls to warn the others about the grimm, telling them to stick together. Willow (understandably) starts freaking out and flees the room (classic horror trope!). Klein is left alone when Penny wakes up with red eyes. Oh no!
Don't worry. You know nothing meaningful happens.
She shoves Klein before (somehow?) resisting the hack, her Maiden powers going wild in the process. Just when it looks as if Penny might cause some serious damage, Nora wakes up, takes her hand, and says, I kid you not:
"Hey... no one is going to make you do anything you don't want to do... It's just a part of you. Don't forget about the rest."
Okay. I want to re-emphasize that I love hopeful, uplifting, victory-won-through-the-power-of-love stories. Istg I'm not dead inside, it's just that RWBY does this so badly. I mean, what is this? It has similarities to the character shouting, 'No! Resist!' to their mind-controlled ally, but this is not presented as a desperate, last-ditch effort by Nora. She just speaks like this is the most obvious truth in the world. If you don't want to have your mind taken over... just don't! It's that simple. The problem definitely isn't that Watts has changed her coding and has implemented a command she can't override, it's that Penny has forgotten about the "rest" of her personhood.
And this works. Granted, not for long, but we leave Nora having successfully calmed Penny down and until her eyes unexpectedly go red again scenes later, we're left assuming that this is a permanent solution. That, imo anyway, is taking the Power of Love too far, overriding the basic reality of Penny being hacked. Itâs not a personal failing she must overcome, itâs an external attack. I would have rather had Nora react to the scars she saw on her arm, or have a moment with Klein, or get some love from the group. Not a wakes up, falls asleep, wakes up again to save Penny with a Ruby level 'Just ignore reality' pep-talk, then back to sleep again.
So Penny isn't attacking her allies, or mistakenly hurting her allies with wild Maiden powers. Not that the group doesn't have enough to deal with, but still. Weiss arrives to help with the Hound and attempts a new summon, only to fail when two minor grimm burrow up into her glyphs. I really enjoyed that moment, both for the wing visual and the knowledge that Weiss' glyphs can fail if you break them somehow (which makes sense). Also, I just like that she failed in general? Weiss is, as per usual now, about to demonstrate just how OP she is compared to the rest of the team, so it was nice to see her faltering here.
The Hound tries to make off with Ruby and Blake does an excellent job of keeping it tethered. Ruby finally wakes, only to realize that the grimm is actually after Penny since it's staring at her power up through the window, no longer trying to escape. Moments like this remind me that there's someone on RT's writing team that knows what they're doing, at least some of the time. The assumption that the Hound is after Ruby as a SEW, the surprise that it's actually Penny, realizing it holds up because Ruby is covered in Penny's blood and Blake is not... that's all nice, tight plotting. More of that please!
The Hound drops her and Ruby's aura shatters when she hits the ground. I want everyone to remember this moment as an example of how strong the Hound is. The group may be tired, but unlike YJR they've been sitting around in the Schnee manor for a number of hours, regaining strength. We saw the Hound hit Ruby twice â once through the wall and once to knock her out â and then she falls from a not very high distance for a huntress, yet her aura is toast. That's the level of power and skill the Hound possesses. Decimating YJR, knocking Oscar out, same for Ruby, avoiding Blake and Weiss' hits, soon to treat Penny like a ragdoll. Just remember all this for the episode's end.
Blake tells Weiss she'll take care of Ruby, you go help the others. Yay breaking up the duos more! Bad timing though as the new acid-spitting grimm pops out of the ground and Blake is now left alone to face it.
Weiss re-enters the mansion, knowing the Hound is somewhere nearby, but not where. Suddenly, Willow's voice sounds through her scroll with an, "Above you!" which... doesn't keep Weiss from getting hit lol. But it's the thought that counts! Willow has accessed the cameras she's set up throughout the manor, watching the Hound's movements, and I have to say, that is a WAY better use of her separation from Klein than I thought we were getting. I legit thought they'd have Willow run away in a panic, meet the Hound, die, and then Weiss could be sad about losing her mom.
It does say something about RWBY's writing that this was my knee-jerk theory, as well as my surprise when we got something way better.
The Hound runs off, uninterested in Weiss, and she asks Willow to keep tabs on it. It heads for Whitley next (also covered in Penny's blood) and very creepily stalks him in the office with a, "I know you're here." Whitley is seconds away from being Hound chow before one of Weiss' boars pin it against the wall. He runs, then runs BACK to finish deploying the airships, before finally escaping assumed death. Goddamn this boy is pulling his weight.
I assume all these ships are automated then? I hope someone takes a moment to call May. Otherwise it's going to be super weird for the Mantle citizens if a fleet of SDC ships just show up and hover there...
I don't entirely understand how Weiss saved him though. She's nowhere to be seen when Whitley leaves and he runs a fair distance before he and Willow encounter Weiss again. We know her summons don't have to keep right next to her, but are they capable of rudimentary thought, attacking an enemy â and an enemy only â despite Weiss being a couple corridors down and unable to see the current battlefield? I don't know. In another series I'd theorize that this was a deliberate hint, a way to clue us into the fact that Willow, someone who we currently know almost nothing about, had training in the past and summoned the boar herself. Weiss and Winter certainly didn't get that hereditary skill from Jacques. Hell, we might still get that, Weiss reacting with confusion next episode when Whitley thanks her for the boar, but I doubt it. That scene with Ruby and the Hound aside, the show isn't this good at laying groundwork and then following up on it.
Case in point: Weiss says, "I didn't forget you" to Whitley after he gets away from the Hound, the moment trying to harken back to her promise to Willow. Key word is "trying." Because she absolutely forgot him! Weiss threatened and ignored Whitley until he proved his usefulness. I also shouldn't need to point out that, "Don't forget your brother" does not mean, "Don't let your brother die a horrible death by abnormal grimm." Weiss acts like her saving him is a fulfillment of her promise, rather than just the most basic of human decency. And also, you know, her job.
So that part is frustrating. The entire Schnee dynamic is a mess, from Weiss making a joke of her father's arrest, to Willow (presumably) fixing their relationship by putting a hand on her daughter's shoulder. Okay.
Then Weiss cuts off the Hound by summoning a giant wall of ice. My brain, every time this happens:
YOU COULD HAVE FIXED THE HOLE IN MANTLE'S WALL.
Moving on, Blake's fight against the acid... thing has some great choreography, including Blake using her semblance which we haven't seen in AGES.Â
I really like the fight itself, just not what Blake is shouting the whole time. "I need you, Ruby! We all need you!" This has really gotten ridiculous. Ruby is presented as everyone's sole savior despite failing time and time again. It's not that I don't think Blake as a character should have faith in her leader, it's that I don't think the writers should be crafting a story where everyone puts their unshakable hopes in an untrained, disloyal, impulsive 17 year old. I mean, Ruby is currently unconscious, yet Blake is acting like if she doesn't wake up â she, as an individual, if Ruby Rose does not re-join this fight â then all is lost. If Ruby doesn't save them, no one can. Which is, of course, absurd on numerous levels. Blake doesn't need the passed out, aura-less Ruby right now, she needs the still very healthy Weiss pulling out multiple summons and an ice wall! Use your scroll and call for backup again.
But of course, Ruby wakes up and kills the new, terrifying grimm with a single hit. It's a preview of what's to come with the Hound and it's just as ridiculous here as it will be there.
Speaking of the Hound, am I the only one who thought this was... cute?
I can't possibly be the only one. That head-tilt is exactly what my dogs do and my brain instinctively went, "Aww, puppy!"
Murderous puppy.
The Hound realizes none of the Schnees are who it's looking for and runs off. Penny, meanwhile, has been fully taken over because, well, that's just what's convenient now. She resists long enough keep Amity up, then succumbs, then resists to apologize to Ruby, then succumbs, then resists because Nora asked her to, then succumbs once it's time to knock her out. If RWBY was willing to commit to consequences, Penny would have been taken over and that was that. The characters would need to deal with whatever outcome happens as a result. Instead, the show very carefully avoids any of those pesky consequences by having Penny successfully resisting at key moments, despite no explanation of how she's managing that.
She shoves Klein again (Klein is having a Bad Time) and starts walking down the main steps. When Whitley wants to know where the hell she's going, Penny mechanically responds that she must "Open the vault, then self-destruct." I suppose the change Watts made was the self-destruct order? Ironwood obviously wants the vault open, though not necessarily Penny's death. Think what you will of his moral compass, she's a damn powerful ally â a research project, perhaps â and a Maiden to boot. At the very least, her death may give the powers to someone even worse.
God, please don't let them have brought Penny back and made her a Maiden just to kill her again.
The Hound arrives though and, as said, knocks Penny out. We're back to square one with her, then. Note though that this attack is near instantaneous. She grabs its hands one second, is hanging limply the next. Wow, the Hound sure is a terrifying antagonist!
Not for long.
"That's enough," Ruby says and one-shots it with her eyes.
Now, I want to talk for a moment about the implications of that line. "That's enough." Obviously Ruby is #done with this situation and emotionally unwilling to let the Hound kidnap Penny (congratulations, Nuts and Dolts shippers), but there's a meta reading here as well. Not intentional, but glaring to me nonetheless. Basically, the idea that the Hound has, from a plot perspective, done enough. It has served its singular purpose. It kidnapped Oscar and now it dies. Never-mind how insanely powerful we've established the Hound to be, never-mind how Ruby's eyes also work or don't work according to whether anything of actual import is on the line. From a plot perspective "that's enough" and the Hound can be disposed of instantly. It got Oscar and gave us an episode of filler creepiness. Move along now.
The idea behind Ruby's eyes isn't bad, but the execution absolutely is. RT has undermined a huge portion of the stakes by giving their protagonist an instant kill-shot that always works precisely when she needs it to. Starting with the Apathy, we have yet to get a moment where Ruby's eyes fail to save the day when she really needs them to, no matter how incredible the challenge. The Hound was very intentionally written to be a grimm outside of the group's current power level. It thinks, it talks, they literally can't touch it. This creates the expectation that the group will need to grow stronger â or at least become smarter â in order to surmount this new obstacle, yet Ruby's eyes undermine all of that. The group hasn't grown in years, the show just makes enemies weaker as needed (Ace Ops), or has Ruby pull out her eyes as a trump card. It wouldn't be that bad if we'd at least gotten a good battle out of it, one where the group gets close to defeating the Hound on their own, but needs Ruby's eyes to finish it off. Instead, she literally walks up without any aura, announces to the audience that this antagonist's time is up, and blasts it out a window.
Granted, Ruby's eyes don't completely finish it. The Hound pulls itself to its feet and we see this.
Yup, that's a guy and yup, those are silver eyes.
I would like to issue a formal apology to the "It's secretly Summer!" theorists in the fandom. I mean, I still think it would be ridiculous (and at this point highly improbable) that Ruby's dead mother has actually been a grimm mutant this whole time, just hanging out in Salem's realm while she waits for the plot to start before attacking the world, and then sends some no-name faunus dude after the group instead of their leader's mother for extra, emotional torture... but you all were definitely right about the âIt's a personâ part! I... don't know how I feel about this. Admittedly, it seems to be a logical continuation of the other grimm-human hybrids we've seen â namely Cinder and Salem herself â and it finally explains why Salem wants Ruby alive (even though it actually doesn't because WHY did she want more SEWs for Hound grimm when she wasn't even attacking back then? And already has all these other insanely powerful tools??), but at the same time, it feels like it's complicating a story that doesn't need further complications. The group fights monsters and has an immortal enemy. You don't need to add 'Some of those monsters are secretly human' to the mix.
It doesn't hurt that this twist is giving me Attack on Titan vibes, which, ew. A dark time in my fandom life, folks.
The Hound staggers a few steps before Whitley and Willow dump a suit of armor on it. That's all it takes to kill the most dangerous grimm we've ever seen: a single flash of silver eyes and some heavy metal. This also wreaks havoc with the implication that Salem wants SEWs alive because they create such powerful grimm. Obviously not. I mean yeah, normal huntsmen are going to have serious problems, weâve seen that this volume, but any other SEWs nearby will take a Hound out instantaneously. For a villain with so many other powerful abilities â immortality, magic, endless normal grimm, her nifty soup â Salem would be much better served just killing SEWs straight out. Clearly, creating Hounds isn't worth the effort.
The Hound leaves some bones behind and Ruby collapses to her knees, overcome with the knowledge that this was once a person. Again, uncomfortable Attack on Titan parallels.
We finish our premiere with Cinder clearing away rubble to reveal Watts. Honestly, I like that we ended on this because her rescue is hilarious. She just slings him over her shoulders like a sack of potatoes and blasts off with her magic fire feet. Fantastic.
Note though that with this scene we've seen almost everything from the clip and the trailer. What's to come in the rest of Volume 8? No idea. Outside of Winter leading the charge with the bomb, we got it all here.
Time to update the bingo board!
I'm crossing off "Introducing new grimm that are quickly abandoned." Between the Hound and acid-dude both falling to a single blast/cut from Ruby, we've more than earned this square.
It doesn't look as if we'll get another Watts-Jacques team-up now that he's left, but you never know.
Maria's got me worried. I feel like her Yoda fight against Neo is the one thing she'll be allowed to do this volume, but given that we didn't see anyone except Ruby's group this episode, we don't yet know whether the story is now ignoring her and Pietro, or if they'll re-appear in another episode like YJR. Â
Qrow is free. Will he get a drink before trying to murder Ironwood? Perhaps.
Still no bingo :(
All in all, the episode was by no means horrible. I think there were lots of horrible parts, but also some legitimately well executed moments, fun action, and scenes that I can easily imagine as squee worthy if you lean back and squint. Everything is comparative and in the growing collection of bad RWBY episodes, this one isn't securing a top slot. Which doesn't mean I think it's good, just... not as bad as it could have been and primarily only bad due to long-running problems, not things this specific episode has done. That's my bar then, so low it has officially entered the underworld.
Still, RWBY is back and a part of me is eager to see where this volume takes us, for better or for worse.
Until next week! đ

BnHA Chapter 279: Here Comes the Airplane
Previously on BnHA: Gigantomachia gathered up the rest of the League and headed off to go help Tomura. Also he is now 80 feet tall. The heroes were all, âwhoa this guy is really big, we should probably stop him and maybe even devote an entire chapter or two just to that,â and so they sent three whole people after him, which sadly is pretty much the exact sort of strategy Iâve come to expect from them by this point. Anyway so Mt. Lady tried to hold Machia off but kept getting flung aside, and Kamui Woods tried to catch him but was set on fire by Dabi who is just having way too good of a time setting all of the flammable heroes on fire today, and Midnight tried to put him to sleep but Compress threw a bunch of debris at her and so she fell like 80 feet. The chapter ended with Midnight being all âfuck thisâ and calling Momo, who ordered the rest of the child soldier squad into action as Machia approached. Iâm not really sure what theyâre gonna do, but I honestly donât really care, because itâs Momo, and so, YES.
Today on BnHA: U.A.âs first-year hero students, who apparently had nine hours to prepare their battleground instead of the fifteen seconds we had all assumed, launch a complex multi-staged assault which is actually really fucking impressive because these kids are actually awesome. First they pin Machia down in one of Honenukiâs mud pits, and then they take turns making impassioned attempts to take out the other League members chilling out on Machiaâs back. Unfortunately none of these attempts work because of Dabi, whoâs working overtime while the rest of the League sits around shooting down each otherâs escape plans. Basically a lot of stuff gets set on fire, and then the chapter ends with Mt. Lady pinning Machia to the ground while MINA, YES, MINA, charges at him covered in acid like some sort of video game boss that you need some kind of specific item to defeat. DID YOU KNOW YESTERDAY WAS MINAâS BIRTHDAY YOU GUYS. Anyway so this chapter is basically pandemonium from start to finish, and itâs great. It is a RUMPUS, y'all. A STRAIGHT UP HULLABALOO.
IS IT MOMO LOVINâ HOURS I THINK IT IS, YOU GUYS. ARE YOU EXCITED. I AM EXCITED
but first, the color page we were promised, in celebration of Six Whole Years Of This Bullshit!!
oh god oh god so much to love so little time
some of the rowdier characters are making MULTIPLE APPEARANCES IN THIS SHITSHOW, including Kaminari who appears to be in a record-setting THREE of these! who exactly was taking all of these pictures, and why are they so obsessed with him. also how many of these are going to be used as evidence in the latest Kami Traitor Theory posts and is it too early for me to get mad about it
âWE INVITED ENDEAVOR AND HAWKS TO OUR âBEING FANCY ON THE COLOR PAGEâ PARTY, EVEN THOUGH THEYâRE NOT U.A. STUDENTS OR FACULTY. WE JUST FELT LIKE IT.â listen that is fine, yâall donât have to explain yourselves to me
Mirko however is not here, I assume because if she was, Horikoshi would have forgotten to draw all the rest of the characters again. sheâs too powerful
Midnight is so sexy I donât even ksdfnkl
ALL MIGHT LOOKING HAPPY GIVES ME THE STRENGTH I NEED TO MAKE IT THROUGH THE REST OF THIS WEEK. YOUR SMILE IS THE MVP
Cementossâs face is the runner-up MVP and one of the greatest things Iâve seen in my life
half the people here seem to be attempting to flirt with whoever is taking the pictures. I am starting to suspect that the culprit is Momo. change my mind
for some reason I am really shocked to see Endeavor getting his drink on. and heâs literally the only one, too
Bakugouâs half-assed I SAID NO PAPARAZZI skills are no match for Tamakiâs legendary âI WILL LITERALLY DIE IF YOU CAPTURE ME ON FILMâ abilities
I literally didnât notice Deku until like three quarters of the page in. he sure does blend right in there
Tokoyami is approximately 97.3% done and ticking EVER CLOSER to full 100% doneness, and when that happens even I canât tell you what is going to go down
do I even need to mention how sexy Aizawaâs hair is. apparently I do
SERIOUSLY THOUGH CEMENTOSSâS FACE
anyway, so that was nice! NOW ON TO THE MOMOLOVINâ
and we begin with FIRST YEAR CLASS B HONENUKI âMUDMANâ JUZOU just LAYINâ SOME TRAPS IN THE WOODS, as one does
oh my freaking god Tokage
somehow her quirk didnât freak me out quite this much the last time we saw her. she is really something. has she always had shark teeth
also WHERE IS MONOMAâS GROUP. I immediately want to know!! is he with the Shouto group? or is there yet ANOTHER student group we donât know about? what would they even be doing
or did Horikoshi actually get three quarters of the way through writing this arc and then suddenly slap his forehead as he realized that if Monoma just casually copied Machiaâs powers he would either DIE IMMEDIATELY or else become SUPER STRONG and also grow 80 feet tall and this would suddenly be a very different battle with the scales tipping decidedly in the heroesâ favor. and so he had to quickly write him out of the battle in this very half-assed way
anyway, so while I ponder that, Tokage is peeking the top of her head out over the trees and staring at Machia who is, you guessed it, still heading right their way! just like heâs been doing pretty much this entire time
and now thereâs a whole page of reaction panels you guys. this is why Horikoshi tries to avoid these massive Endgame-style battles with every single hero known to man participating. hopefully we wonât have too many of these. like I mean thank you for the roll call and all but Iâd like to get to the action now
Mineta of all people is stealing this entire page with that expression though. he is not fucking around. this is twice in as many chapters that heâs been a page-stealing face-making champ. dare I hope this could be the start of a new niche for him? lord knows it would be so much better than the old niche
also this page is just sweatdrops galore. these kids are so nervous. MANGA GODS PLEASE KEEP THEM SAFE, although Iâm honestly not too worried about them compared to the adults. Iâm sure I should be, but I just am not
all right so now Momo is explaining what those little canisters are!
okay but someone please explain to me how it is that they had time to stop and lay all of these traps?? not just Honenukiâs, but Minetaâs and what looks like some of Shiozakiâs work as well?? did Machia just STOP MOVING for like five whole minutes all of a sudden for no reason at all? while they were all sitting out here saying things like âwith that speed...â? ????? ????????
also lol wtf. âweâre gonna have to make him eat it.â I still have no idea what their plan is, but itâs getting more entertaining by the minute Iâll say that much
okay so Momo says that if they can get him to swallow just one of these, then that should be enough to put him to sleep. oh my god this chapter is going to be AMAZING isnât it
meanwhile Mineta is worrying about Midnight. I swear to god if they turn this into something where heâs only worried because sheâs hot, I will take one of these canisters and shove it right up his...
okay good, Minaâs reassuring him that itâs gonna be okay, and then weâre just cutting to Machia stampeding in with Mt. Lady and Kamui still clinging to him
WHAT THE HELL ARE THESE GUYS EVEN DOING
âweâll just stand here adjacent to him and just kind of watch as he rushes straight at the children.â someone help me, Iâm having difficulty finding a synonym for âuselessâ that carries the full amount of emphasis I want to place on it right now. this requires a degree of language the human race is not yet capable of
OH SNAP
THEY GOT HIM YEAHHHHH
OH DANG, FOR REAL THOUGH!!
ngl, for a brief spiteful moment I was disappointed he hadnât actually fallen on them :/
and theyâre still JUST STANDING THERE, I CAN'T EVEN?? weâre getting to the point where I honestly think actual civilians might have been of more use in this situation
YESSSSS
TIME TO FIND OUT HOW MANY TENTH GRADERS GIGANTOMACHIA CAN TAKE IN A FIGHT
also, sorry to keep harping on this, but the juxtaposition of that earlier panel with all of the fully grown and experienced pros just standing in dumb awe, immediately followed by this panel of BRAVE BUT DETERMINED CHILDREN CHARGING IN AND YELLING âGO GO GOâ, is just... it really is something. shit. if I was the HPSC and this was what I had to work with, I too might have seriously considered fudging a few age requirements in hopes of finding someone who could actually get the fucking job done
also what the hell is going on down there with Shishida and Satou and that third person? what are those Blackwhip-looking things?? Iâm confused
ohhhhh no
Shiozaki is about to be sent flying through the air courtesy of her own hair vines omg
OH NO WAIT THE THREE TOUGH GUYS ARE STOPPING HIM. AHHH THE LAST ONE WAS KENDOU AHHHH
I still canât figure out what the hell those are though lol. did Momo make some steel cables?? I feel like Machia would be able to break just about any kind of rope or chain they could concoct just by sheer brute strength alone
ah fuck
DONâT YOU GUYS GO RUINING THIS FOR ME!! THEYâVE GOT A GOOD THING GOING HERE, LET THEM HAVE THEIR FUN!!
although I do appreciate how theyâre all âU.A.!!â in kind of this âoh shit, these guys we actually have to worry aboutâ sort of tone lol
this look on Togaâs face is a bit concerning! well but Deku and Ochako arenât here though, so I wonder who sheâs gonna fight if it comes to that. huh
(ETA: seriously, does anyone have any idea what Toga is planning cuz I sure donât.)
Shouji and Ojiro, who I might remind you are normal people with no enhanced physical abilities aside from extra appendages, appear to have somehow circled all the way around to Machiaâs back and are now climbing up oh shit
oh and Aoyamaâs there too! -- is Shouji carrying him omg
heâs using him as a human ray gun omggg. this is the most delightful thing Iâve ever witnessed
NOW SOMETHING IS BEING SHOT AT THE LEAGUE AND DABIâS STARING AT IT ALL â>:(â AND IâM PRETTY SURE THIS THING, WHATEVER IT IS, IS ABOUT TO BE SET ON FIRE, LETâS SEE
lds;afksjdl;fkj WERE THOSE JIROUâS EARJACKS??!!
okay you know what fuck you Dabi. you think itâs funny to set a little girlâs ears on fire?! donât expect any sympathy from me when Aoyama lasers you in the face
WELL I DONâT KNOW WHATâS HAPPENING BUT THEYâRE SHOOTING WHAT LOOK LIKE A BUNCH OF LITTLE TAMBOURINES AT HIM NOW
I ASSUME THEY ARE NOT ACTUALLY TAMBOURINES, BUT I REALLY DONâT KNOW, ITâS NOT LIKE THEY HANDED OUT THE RULE BOOK TO THIS THING AHEAD OF TIME
[HUGE EXAGGERATED GASPING SOUNDS]
oh my god oh my god oh my god oh my god oh my
OH MY GOD AND YANAGI THREW THEM WITH HER POLTERGEIST QUIRK!??
I DONâT KNOW WHAT THIS âACK?!!â IS AND ITâS REALLY BUMMING ME OUT, BECAUSE THIS CAME WITHIN INCHES OF BEING THE COOLEST FUCKING COMBINATION IâVE EVER SEEN IN MY ENTIRE LIFE!?!?
(ETA: it would have laid them all flat in seconds. Kaminari is to be feared you guys.)
NO!!!!!
it is sincerely frustrating to me watching the League carelessly toss aside all of their painstakingly accumulated goodwill from the MVA arc in the span of just a few short pages. hey Compress, you think itâs cool to hurl a bunch of rocks at my six-and-a-half-year-old son?? I hope someone rips that cool robot arm off and uses it to punch you in the dick
here comes Sero!! and how are you going to die, Sero
what in the
did he just... sneeze them all into space
okay but hear me out, what if Shouda absorbed that impact. SHOUDA YOUR TIME HAS FINALLY COME. CLASS 1-BâS ASCENT TO GLORY
(ETA: watch this space!! Shouda is here for a reason mark my words.)
meanwhile on Machiaâs back, Dabi is soliloquying about Machiaâs quirk while his arm is doing... something
please forgive me for not being able to drum up any sympathy for poor Dabiâs arms right about now. quit trying to set all my kids on fire
wait whaaaaat lol
so I scrolled back up to the previous page, and... that was fire?? lord help me why am I still so terrible at being able to tell when Horikoshi is drawing fire as opposed to just air randomly whooshing through trees. I have really got to memorize that foossh sound effect
so can Gigantomachia just BREATHE FIRE now?? or was ALL OF THAT Dabi??? if it was the latter then at least he had the decency to wait until all of the kids got blown out of range before setting the whole forest aflame to keep them back. Iâll admit it, that was thoughtful of him as far as villain power moves go
OHO BUT YOU CANâT COUNT MOMO OUT JUST LIKE THAT!!
AND NOW EVERYTHING AROUND THEM IS EXPLODING AHHHHHH DID YOU GUYS SET LANDMINES, BAKUGOU WOULD BE SO PROUD
once again I have to ask myself exactly how much prep time they had here. Horikoshi would have you think it was mere seconds, but that clearly cannot be the case?? maybe they set some of these up beforehand to catch any stray villains trying to flee the area?
lmao Spinnerâs all âwait why doesnât he just dig his way outâ, because apparently Machia can tunnel himself under the ground. but Compress is all âum because we would dieâ and Spinner is all âoh rightâ
though I gotta say, itâs not like theyâre that much better off as things are now, either. pinned down in the woods surrounded by fire and explosives. definitely a conundrum
oh snap Compress has realized that their presence is holding Machia back. donât tell me Machia is gonna head off on his own and leave the rest of the League to square off with the kids
YOOOOOO HOLY SHIT THE HEROES ACTUALLY DID SOMETHING
there you go, League! free cannon fodder to get you all pumped and confident again!
DKFJLSDKJ
PLEASE LET THIS BE THE ACTUAL TRANSLATION OH MY GOD. THIS IS MY NEW FAVORITE LINE IN ANYTHING AHHHH
âIâm leaving it to you, U.A.âs youngsters!â yeah, you and everyone else. ah well, canât deny they get the job done
OH MMKJKYYYY GODDDDDDJJK
MINA COATED HERSELF IN ACID AND IS RUNNING AT GIGANTOMACHIA AND IS SHE ALSO ON FIRE??!?! SHEâS JUST RUNNING AT HIM LIKE A BIG OLâ FIERYÂ BLOB???! QUEEN MINA???!! FIRE IS NOT HER WEAKNESS???! MINA??!! IS AIRPLANE?!??!!?!? MINAAAAAAA
holy fucking shit this whole arc is just one big Arc Of Ladies Getting To Do Stuff and I am 1000% living for it. THIS ARC IS MY FAMILY. I WOULD DIE FOR IT AND LEAVE EVERYTHING TO IT IN MY WILL. ahhhhhhhhhh

11/11/11 - Tag Game
Thanks for the tag @ofinkblotsandscript !! :)
Rules: answer 11 questions, ask 11 questions of 11 people
ââ
1. What is your favourite genre to write?
Fantasy probably, especially high fantasy! Itâs just so fun to build a fantasy world from scratch!
2. Who is your favourite OC and why?
I change favourites all the time but currently itâs Corinth because Iâm so satisfied with his (planned) character arc!
3. Who is your least favourite OC and why?
I donât really have a least favourite OC, but I do have several neglected ones haha
4. Do you ever find yourself self-inserting in your writing?
No, not really. But I do have something to say about self-inserts that is not actually related to the question.
This is going to sound controversial but I think the writing community is overly-critical of self-insert characters.
The main issue many may have with self-insert characters, is not so much the fact that itâs a self-insert, but that the writer can be too biased towards their self-insert character to a point where the writing becomes illogical. But if self-insert characters are given the same treatment and same amount of complexities as any other character, they can actually work really well!
For example, in Dazai Osamuâs iconic literary work âNo Longer Humanâ, Dazai wrote himself into the protangonist of the story, and the character worked so well that I find myself crying at climatic parts of the story!
There are many other of such classic literary work, where the story is essentially a fictional autobiography of the authors themselves, like W. Somerset Maughamâs âOf Human Bondageâ. And sometimes the author may write themselves into side characters of their story, like when Fyodor Dostoevsky wrote himself as the father in âThe Brothers Karamazovâ.
Heck, âDiary of a Young Girlâ was literally Anne Frankâs personal diary, and it resonated with so many readers worwide!
My point is made, itâs time to debunk the myth that self-insert characters are inherently bad, when they can in fact be written well when given the same amount of complexity as any other character.
5. Are you hoping to publish your work? If so will you submit your work or self-publish?
I actually donât know. For Project Nightshade, I have the world, the character and the plot planned out, but I havenât given much thought to publishing yet. Right now Iâm inclining towards making it a visual novel, so Iâm thinking maybe tapas? Idk I really donât know yet, I might write instead if my art skills are not good enough :â
6. What is your favourite book and why?
Oh no itâs so hard to pick a favourite because I have so many! But if I have to, itâs got to be one is Jimmy Liaoâs (ĺšžçąłďź book âWo De Shi Jie Dou Shi Niâ ďźćçä¸çé˝ćŻä˝ ), which roughly translates to âMy World is Youâ.
Jimmy writes short illustrated books, but he has such a unique storytelling style that it had struck a chord with me since I was very young (maybe 7 or so). His sentence structure and choice of words are very simple, such that even a child can understand it, yet the simplicity and authenticity of his words made them beautifully poetic. His accompanying illustrations are whimsical and beautifully composed, and lends his book such an iconic look, that it becomes immediately recognisable to his readers! I have so much admiration for him as both an author and an artist!
I adore all of his works, but his book âMy World is Youâ takes the cake for me. The book is about a little girl dealing with the loss of her mother (as represented by her puppy ragdoll), where each night she visits a different entity in a room and learns a different lesson about loss. The story is told from the little girlâs perspective and dealt with such a heavy topic in such a profound and astoundingly poetic way, that I find myself clinging tightly to every single word. The story is such a simple story, yet is so emotional that I still find myself crying my eyes out every time even though Iâve probably read it over twenty times already. The book is cleverly written, because while it appeals to children through its beautiful illustrations, it also grapples with mature themes like loss in a sophisticated manner, such that it can help children learn about loss in a healthy way. At the same time, his book also appeals to adults, who can relate with the little girlâs struggle with loss, and is also more capable of interpreting complex meanings hidden in the narrative.
Jimmy Liao is seriously underrated and I hope that someday his works can be translated so that they can reach a wider international audience. I had fallen in love with his writing (and drawing) at age 7 and even now I still absolutely adore his work, and if anything I learnt to appreciate them more! In other words, his writing is really one that ages well along with his readers, and his books will always have a special place in my heart.
7. Do you set yourself goals in your writing? If so what is your current goal?
Not really, I just work on my wip whenever I have free time. Right now Iâm just focusing on polishing the worldbuilding as well as the outline :â
8. Do you like to handwrite your drafts or type them up?
Definitely type. Itâs just so much easier to edit :â
9. What do you think is the hardest thing about being a writer?
Personally itâs writing in general, like finding the right turn of phrases, or appropriate metaphors. I only picked up English when I was like 10, and I wasnât fluent in it until like 12 or something. Even now Iâm still quite insecure about my English (especially pronounciation but I guess that falls outside of writing), but I am slowly gaining more confidence in my linguistic skills, and I hope one day I can reach a level that I can be proud of!
10. Do you plan out your projects or just start writing?
Plan, plan, and plan! I personally canât dive into something without excessive planning, but I really respect those who can! I tried writing something spontaneously before but it was a trainwreck so I told myself never again haha :â
11. Do you like to stick to one project or have multiple ones at once?
One project. I canât imagine juggling multiple projects at once, Iâd be too overwhelmed! Heck, this entire blog is dedicated to just one wip! Mad respect to all of you out there with two or more wips. Wow!
ââ
Here are my 11 questions:
1. Tell us about yourself!
2. Tell us about your current wip(s)!
3. Tell us about the protangonist in your wip(s)! (Who are they? What are they like? What are their goals/motivations?)
4. What got you into writing? What was the first time you ever wrote?
5. What are some of your inspirations? (It can be a book, movie, tv show, anything!)
6. Is there a particular author you look up to? Who is it and why?
7. Have you ever experienced a writing block? How did you deal with it?
8. Do you outline your wip(s) or just go with the flow?
9. Is there a particular character archetype or trope that you are fond of writing? What is it and why?
10. Tell us how you name your OCs!
11. Tell us a random fact about either your OCs or your wip(s)!
ââ
Tagging: @hyba @sheabutterskyes @ofimber @amiable-cherry @royalbounties @nerdvanauniverse @the-real-rg @winonapeaks @coffeeandpurplepens @awritinglen @thelostandforgottenageha
Anyone else is welcome to answer the 11 questions too! Thanks for reading :)

Spencer & Locke 2 #4
Spencer & Locke 2 #4 Action Lab Danger Zone 2019 Written by David Pepose Illustrated by Jorge Santiago Jr. Coloured by Jasen Smith Lettered by Colin Bell   Clawing back from defeat, Spencer and Locke make their final stand against the merciless Roach Riley. Can these unlikely partners overcome their inner demons long enough to stop this reign of terror? Or will Roach have the last laugh after all? Find out in this thrilling conclusion!   This is probably the best issue of the entire run yet. With the way this one ends I cannot wait to see what the next arc is going to be like. Whoa doggy. So I want to say that what David is doing with this story wise is pretty damn dark and brilliant. Close the ending when Locke was talking to Roach about living with ones scars you had a feeling about what was coming not that you wanted to see it but the whole is like this epic awakening and itâs going to be the aftermath that will be his defining moment.   I love the way that this is structured and how David manages to create the ebb & flow of action and story together as one. The story & plot development here is so good, strong and takes us to surprising places that we donât always expect it to and thatâs a huge draw in my book. The whole not being able to see where itâs going and having to pay attention is a true testament to how well itâs written as no one wants to hear the story is predictable and this, this is far from that. The pacing is perfectly done and along with the all around character development, characterisation, and managing the different plot points I gotta say I am pretty mightily impressed.   One of the things about this whole thing that really surprised me in how much I liked it, appreciated the irony and use of is the Sunday Funnies being incorporated into the theme of the series. The whole main idea and now Roach Riley? Maybe Cathy will show up or better yet Apartment 3-G I mean there is so much out there to be utilised in so many unique and creative ways. If anything David is definitely unique and creative so if anyone were capable of mining that gold itâs him and I sincerely hope this series keeps coming back.   That leads into the fact that there are multiple styles of art happening within these pages and to be able to do so as cleanly and effectively as we see here is utterly sensational. The Roach Riley feels like a Sunday Strip and while the rest maintains a more innocent style thatâs extremely mature content makes you feel like the kid who didnât grow up. You identify with it, enjoy and subconsciously you realise that it bloody brilliant work. The linework is sensational, the attention to detail that comes out the manipulation of the varying weights is stunning. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a strong, talented and visual eye for creative storytelling. The colour work here keeps it all cohesive and draw the eye through the page beautifully. The colour blocking is done in such a way that it feels natural and effortless and the utilisation of light sources for shading and shadows is extremely nice to see. â   This book keeps coming at me and gets better and better with every issue to hit stands. I can see the growth of the creators and I can see them coming into that potential that they possess and itâs an exciting time to be a part of this. Action Lab is definitely in the top tier of companies whoâs books have that consistency and readability that makes them unique, special and talk worthy.

How to Submit a Good Portfolio
Since public applications will be opening soon, I thought I would make a simple guide on how to send a good portfolio when you apply to zines.
Iâll mostly be referring to art, since thatâs what Iâm most familiar with, but Iâm sure a lot of these points can apply to writing as well.
A lot of my drawn commentary is meant to be lighthearted (and oh so messy), so please donât take anything too seriously.
What is a portfolio? Anywhere you post your art is technically a portfolio, since youâre showcasing your work to a potential audience. If you showcase your artwork via Tumblr, Instagram, or any other site, youâre free to submit it for review. You donât need to have a fancy, paid website to showcase your work. Let your art speak for itself.
What makes a portfolio bad? Like I mentioned before, anywhere you post your art is technically a portfolio. However, that doesnât necessarily mean that itâs a good one. In a portfolio, you want to show us your best work. While instagram may be a good place to show us your artwork, if there are some food pictures, con pictures, memes, or any random posts, itâs a bad portfolio. We don't want to sound harsh, but we would appreciate only seeing your work and not your outside life. That way, we can solely focus on your portfolio.
What makes a portfolio good? Good portfolios showcase completed pieces that demonstrate your best skills and capabilities. If you post your artwork on tumblr, you may have some random content in your blog, but if you have a tag specifically for your finished pieces and best work, please send us the link with that certain tag. It will save us the hassle of scrolling down multiple pages and it tells us youâre serious about the project by showing us your true potential.
What to submit:
1) Submit complete URLs. We want to easily copy and paste your portfolio onto our browser. We donât want to type out the whole website. We have hundreds of applications to go through, so typing up the website can eat up a lot of our time. Iâll admit that Iâm guilty of doing this, but Iâm also learning from my mistakes. Typing up the URL (even if itâs as simple as mywebsite.com OR myartblog.tumblr.com/tagged/best-work) only takes a few seconds to do, and weâll definitely be grateful to you for doing this.
2) Show us how versatile you can be! While we can appreciate the beautiful technical skills from various artists, if you submit a portfolio that only includes headshots and not much else, you run the risk of being declined. We want to see different compositions, interesting uses of color, or cool angles! You donât need to show us that you can work with 10 different types of media, or hundreds of different angles, but give us something more than just the same pose.
3) Send us completed work. While sketches DO look nice, a majority of zines want to see your completed artworks. In most cases, they are going to be releasing a finished, printed project, so itâs reasonable that we would want samples of what your completed art looks like. By looking at your finished pieces, we can gain a better insight of what to expect from you.
What to avoid:
1) Donât send us a portfolio full of sketches, as mentioned above. If you have a sketchier / messy style, thatâs fine. What you consider as finished is what you should be trying to send to us.
2) Donât make us scroll through tons of pages. This one applies similarly to the previous point. If your blog only includes doodles and a few finished artworks, donât make us scroll for so long just to get to the completed stuff. Please save a life and tag your finished works. We will thank you for it.
3) Donât send us multiple links. Some zines may ask you to link them to 3 of your best works, but instead of sending us 3 different links, create a tag or Google Drive folder with those 3 pieces included. This saves us the time of copy/pasting every single link into our browser, plus it allows us to better compare your work side-by-side. You also get the added benefit of not needing to copy/paste multiple links for your next zine application.
4) Donât send us a portfolio that doesnât include humans. This one is kind of weird, but I have received some applications that only feature animals or backgrounds in their portfolios. If youâre applying to a zine that needs certain people or characters drawn, we canât properly judge your portfolio if you donât show us that you can draw the subject matter. The same can be applied vice versa. If I made a corgi zine and you send me a portfolio full of humans, how am I supposed to know if you can draw a dog or not? When applying to zines, take note on what theyâre looking for, so you can submit accordingly.
5) Donât submit work thatâs older than 2+ years. As an artist, youâre always growing and learning. A lot can change in a year or two. We want to see your recent stuff, since thatâs the most accurate representation of your current skills and knowledge.
A Simple Suggestion
1) If you donât want to tag your work or delete some things from your social media just to show us your best & completed work, make a Google Drive folder that shows us your best pieces. Keep it short and simple by including a minimum of 3 pieces and a maximum of 8 pieces. Make sure the Google Drive folder permissions are changed to shared! (This is very important).
Advice & Final Thoughts
Donât be afraid of rejection. Spots are usually VERY limited in zines. Thereâs no way we could fit everyone into one zine (that would be a heavy and thick book, not to mention SUPER expensive). Iâve been rejected multiple times, but you canât let that discourage you! Just keep applying and continue to improve your artwork. And even if youâre accepted, still continue to improve your artwork! Practice, practice, practice a whole damn lot!
If you know you wonât have enough time to dedicate to the zine, please donât apply. If you apply and get the slot, only for you to drop out last minute, you just took the spot of a potential artist that actually wanted to be a part of the project and itâs unfair to them.
If you get accepted and life gets too hectic for you to continue with the project, PLEASE donât vanish and make the zine organizers hunt you down. It will not make us want to work with you again. We want things to be pleasant between the both of us. Life happens, but communication is ESSENTIAL in every situation.
Iâm not against having sketches in a portfolio (I have a few on my own website as well), but a majority of applicants canât afford their own website, so they use free sites like Tumblr or Instagram. These websites donât really allow you to properly separate your doodles / finished work, so this is why I keep reiterating this point.
Zines are meant to be fun and something to bring the artist community together! Interact with your fellow artists and letâs all have a good olâ time.

A word on the ole elephant in the Barclayâs Center
Joey
Jan 15th
So I was working on my card write up for the UFC's ESPN debut and there's obviously a big elephant in the room regarding the co-main event. There's plenty of things I wanted to say or believe in saying and it was taking attention away from the card. It was getting way too long and so I figured I'd just do a separate bit on the entire situation. It's probably going to be a bit messy and perhaps a touch convoluted but I'm hoping that I can at least get some concepts out here. It's my "job" on here to be kind of rational and fair. Gonna put it under the read more just in case some people don't want a big wall of text given I've got ANOTHER wall of text coming re: actual fight business.
I want to begin with an irritable point of contention I have about not so much Greg Hardy but of a fake concept in MMA some people keep clinging to. Guys if I could, I would love to shout this to the heavens: There is NO such concept in MMA as earn nor deserve. Nobody earns anything and nobody deserves anything. We've seen it a million times now. Earn and deserve are fake in this sport and the longer we continue to believe in it, the more irritating it gets. There is no earn. There is no deserve. Â There is truly no meritocracy here and the UFC has shown us that time and time again. Asking if Greg Hardy has "earned the right to be on the first ever ESPN card?" Idiotic. What has Alonzo Menifield done? Chance Rencountre? Who determines who has "earned" such an honor? Okay who determines who deserved it? The same company that felt has bent its unofficial playbook for dudes like Jon Jones and Conor McGregor? Think of all the fighters who have "earned" title shots and had them taken away or fighters who deserved spots on a main card only to be buried on the prelims due to their fighting style or in some cases whether or not their contract was expiring. I hate to be the dickhead here but we need to stop debating earn and deserve because it's fake. Combat sports make it fake and then revel in us getting tied up about something they don't care about.
Keeping with that point, remember that at the end of the day everybody has the same moral compass. The goal with this show is to get a rating and get ESPN+ subs and I'm 100% sure that if ESPN felt Greg Hardy on the first card was a problem they would've stopped it. ESPN has the authority and the say so here and yet here we are with him still on the card. Every organization has the same moral compass; they're all trying to sell you something. I had this conversation on the DojoTalkPodcast pertaining to the idea of asking forms of entertainment to handle issues they're ill-equipped to deal with---primarily because it collides with the end result of making money. Random guess that ESPN and the UFC had a meeting about it, the UFC said "We think he can generate X amount of interest" and so ESPN sucked it up and went with it. Greg Hardy is probably the second biggest story on this card for better or worse and to be honest if there's interest being driven? It's him. The show looks like it's on path to sell out so it's not like Greg Hardy is sending people away. Again all promotions are trying to make money here and if that means having to buddy up with a guy like Greg Hardy, that's what they'll do in the long run. If this truly irks you then understand that you have plenty of people to get mad at; not just the UFC here. All parties, all involved. Â They all dug deep into this together and so here we are.
I object to the idea that Greg Hardy is getting a second chance. It's really more like a third chance and potentially even a fourth if we're being honest. Greg Hardy was talented enough at Ole Miss to be a 1st round pick and wound up going in the 6th round because teams had genuine concerns over his character and work ethic. That's chance one. Chance two came in Carolina where he worked himself up into a potential major payday and then he screwed himself over with the DV incident. In a sympathetic NFL, Hardy could've come back with a bigger long term payday had he just kept himself out of trouble in Dallas. As a Cowboys fan, I can tell you there were heavy rumblings toward the end of the year that he was toxic and divisive that the Cowboys were thinking of cutting him before December was out. Chance three. Hardy was essentially blackballed from the NFL despite his talent level and his response to this was to eventually get arrested for cocaine possession and other offenses. The UFC is not a second chance for Greg Hardy to earn big money. Maybe it's a second chance from a spiritual or personal perspective but I'm not even sure that fits either. Greg Hardy is what he is; a troubled yet talented individual who has historically not learned from his mistakes. To a fault, I'm really big on second chances and multiple chances for people because human beings are faulty machines who make mistakes and absolutely in my opinion capable of learning and improving. At the same time, I do not in any way shun people who don't believe this person is capable of fixing himself or making good on the repeated opportunities his talent allows. They have history on their side.
It's possible to A) feel as though Greg Hardy being on the same card as PVZ/Rachael Ostovich is tone deaf and B) be ultimately okay with is so long as Ostovich is okay with it. I wouldn't of done it, think it's borderline arrogant and invites unwanted controversy but if the person or people most likely to be impacted by it are fine with it then it's whatever I guess. This feels like a self inflicted wound from an organization that has enough scars from its own stubborness/arrogance.
HAVING SAID THAT, let's address a problem MMA has to find a way to correct and I suppose the same goes for combat sports as a whole. We totally need to find a way to get around the "I'm paying/watching to see you lose" aspect of things. Greg Hardy is here probably 50% in part that there's a bloodthirsty audience willing to wait and wait for the day when he eventually loses. It's that weird primal urge people have that feeds the not so good aspects of human nature. It also creates situations like this where people get mad about something, wait for what they feel is the karmic payoff and if it happens then it's this big pop. The problem is this isn't pro wrestling where we can script who wins and loses and so a bunch of folks who want that release get stifled and it turns ugly. I remember Rumble fights being like that; primarily because people who were so vehemently opposed to him would tune in or pay money to see him lose and then break down when he wouldn't. There's something really unhealthy about that aspect of combat sports and the longer it keeps working and promoters can manipulate it, the longer we're going to have to deal with all of this.
Feels pretty cop out-y to not say if I'm watching or not. I'll be watching on Saturday for a variety of reasons. The first is I promised Alex I'd cover just about every UFC card I could and to this date I think I've missed three; one for a power outage, one because I couldn't see after eye surgery and a third because I was sick (and even then I jumped in halfway through). I'm not going to let Greg Hardy force me to slack on what I said I'd do. I'll also be watching because it's a damn good card and I'm excited to see a lot of it. I also do, and I hate to tell people this knowing the response, think Greg Hardy is going to be a serious thing in this HW division when all is said and done. Will he be good enough to win a title? Probably not. I have SERIOUS doubts he stays out of trouble long enough to not even make it two years into the UFC. That said he's my Adrien Broner I guess; I wanna see how good he is before he capsizes himself. Lastly? This is combat sports. No form of entertainment outside of maybe the music industry forces people to separate artist from person so repeatedly. It often times asks us to stomach some pretty rough people in exchange for the violence they put into the cage or the ring. I've been on here for waaaaaaaaaay too long; long enough to have covered fights with people like Thiago Silva, Abel Trujillo, Rumble and so on so forth. I mean hell Floyd Mayweather Jr! Guys like Bernard Hopkins, Travis Browne, Jon Jones, Rumble Johnson all have their personal warts often displayed in the public's eye and yet we still watch their fights because....well we're addicted. Greg Hardy I guess isn't enough to get me to quit cold turkey on MMA. Â Hell look at it this way, the alternative for Saturday if you're a combat sports fan is a battle between a guy who seems to get arrested once a year (Adrien Broner) and a guy who has some pretty comments on his record regarding gays and supports using the death penalty for drug offenders (Manny Pacquaio). We all have to make choices, especially in combat sports, about what our lines are or aren't. That's our jobs as consumers.
That said if there's one thing I can say that I hope will stick with everyone, it's that there's nobody wrong here outside of the people in question here. What YOU do as a fan one way or another is ultimately your business. If Greg Hardy offends you as a person then I have zeeero problem with you deciding to sit this show out. There are people I respect who will not be watching and I respect them for having that feeling. It's a totally acceptable feeling to have and no, you're not some SJW/soyboy/snowflake or whatever other terms MMA bros might throw your way. You have your line and I accept that and if anything, I appreciate you sticking to your convictions. Conversely I'd also ask that you not get pissy about people who ARE going to tune in and watch. Watching an MMA event with one dude on it who draws some serious visceral reactions due to his actions doesn't make you a supporter of domestic violence, a bad person or some kind of gooney bird unless you're actively rooting for Hardy DUE to his DV past. In that case, you probably are all those things. At the end of the day, we're all in charge of our own moral compass. Watch if you wish, feel how you feel, just don't hurt your cause by being an asshole about it.

The Dragon Prince: Season One â Review
Created by Aaron Ehasz and Justin Richmond 2018, Netflix 9 episodes, 25-27 minutes
Rating:Â â
â
â
ââ
Good: Character writing and designs Bad: Animation style, narrative, pacing, tone
[ ! ] Spoiler Warning
I went into The Dragon Prince with low expectations. I had heard that some of the creative minds behind Avatar: The Last Airbender were the showrunners, but something about the look and feel of the show put me off. My fears were realized when I loaded up the first episode and got turned me off immediately by the terrible opening prologue. I also thought I could forgive the animation style if I gave it a chance, but I just couldnât get past it. So I set The Dragon Prince aside and didnât come back to it for a few weeks. Unfortunately, my opinion of the animation style didnât improve, and the prologue became indicative what the quality of the writing would be for the majority of the season. These issues made my overall experience of The Dragon Prince a negative one, but I did end up being fond of the characters, even though the world and plot were ultimately uninspiring.
The characters of The Dragon Prince surprised me on multiple levels, beginning with how gradual their personality emerged. I was also surprised by how well developed a lot of them were. The difference in quality between character and plot writing is staggering; it never felt like the characters were ever part of the worldâor had any real stakes in the storyâdespite standing as examples of great character writing. Everyone feels fleshed out and real, with a few exceptions. I think itâs worth breaking down the characters and my opinion on each.
Callum
While annoying at times, Callum is simultaneously an awkward teenager and a great older brother, balancing the two roles perfectly. He is confident but at the same time not, leading to some interesting conflicts. I was a bit put off by his voice (I could sometimes hear Sokka in him), but I donât think that should be taken into consideration when evaluating him as a character. The only issue I had with Callum was how the writers seemed to pick him most often for their plot contrivances, wherein he does things out of character to move the plot alongâlike having a âwe need to argue so we can learn somethingâ argument with his brother. Even if almost all of the characters suffer similarly throughout the season, it seems to happen more frequently with him.
Rayla
Of all the protagonists, Rayla feels the most developed. She has a particular way of life and grew up believing a specific ideal, but has not yet decided who she is. Her actions mirror this at every turn, as she struggles with her own values and the duties put on her by her people. She responds to a lot of her problems with sarcastic remarks in an attempt to hide her insecurities about her own capabilities. It was her introduction and subsequent development that had me hooked. I doubt I would have continued watching if not for my investment in her character arc.
Ezran
When talking about the quality of the character writing in The Dragon Prince, I mentioned a few exceptions, and Ezran is one such exception. Perhaps his lack of complexity could be explained away since heâs a child, but considering the work put into the other charactersâand the fact that he and his pet Bait are the source for too many plot contrivancesâI donât believe thatâs the case. Still, his character is solid, but I found myself disliking any scene where he had a prominent role.
Claudia
Of all the characters, Claudia is the one that surprised me the most. What started as a âcrushâ love interest for Callum, turned into a multi-faceted character. Sheâs characterized as quirky, but she displays much more complexity as time goes on, being intelligent, inventive and decisive. Itâs one of the few times I enjoyed a character that fills this trope. I particularly enjoyed the playful banter between her and her brother Soren. Sheâs also never used in any of the plot contrivances that I remember, which made her one of my favourite characters.â
Soren
Soren is the bully character done right. In a modern setting, heâd be the high school jock with a football jacket, giving nerds wedgies and hitting on girls. But like most of the characters in The Dragon Prince, his character writing is superb. Heâs kind of a jerk, but he has heart and does what he thinks is best, even if heâs not always sure what to do. Heâs not one of my favourites, but I enjoyed his interactions with other characters, be it Callum, his sister or his father.
Viren
It can be difficult to create a sympathetic villain, especially when writing stories for children. Itâs often easier to make the villain evil instead of just villainous; capable of heinous acts that no sane person would do, but ultimately unrelatable. Viren engages in all the activities we would expect from a villainous, treacherous royal advisor. However, all his actions are believable, making sense within the political climate of Katolis. Heâs conniving and scheming, but it never feels as though he does anything with ill intent or for the sake of evil. Heâs just doing what he thinks is best, regardless of the cost to himself or the ones around him. That makes him a much more compelling villain in the long run; one that blurs the lines of morality while making it clear that what he does is wrong.
King Harrow
Iâm sad that we donât get to see much of King Harrow, since he quickly became one of my favourite characters. He is level-headed, principled but swept up in his duties. For a fantasy setting, heâs quite relatable. Even his attitude towards Viren can be seen as rational; Viren appears to be deluded as to the nature of their relationship, and Harrow wants to draw clear boundaries in response to Virenâs behaviour. I also enjoyed his relationship with Callum, though Iâm a bit disappointed we didnât get to see him interact with Ezran (which may contribute to my dislike of him). Iâm not totally convinced weâve seen the last of Harrow. Maybe thatâs just wishful thinking on my part, as I felt the quality of the narrative quickly dropped after his assassination.
General Amaya
Amaya was at the centre of many of the discussions around the show at release, due to the fact that she is deaf. She uses ASL and has an interpreter, showing the commitment the showrunners had in properly representing those with hearing impairments. She also hasâhands downâthe best character design, which surely contributed to her initial popularity. I was consistently surprised with how intelligently she was written, from her earnest demeanor to her absolute conviction in doing whatâs morally right. She became my favourite character as soon as she was introduced, helped by the amazing fight scene between her and Rayla shortly thereafter, which had me exclaiming audibly in astonishment at how well the fight was choreographed.
I donât really have an opinion of the rest of the cast. I liked Gren, but he turned into comedic relief once separated from Amaya. The rest of the cast were either bland, annoying or used purely for plot purposes and, as such, were underutilized.
All of the characters had consistently great character designs. Iâve mentioned some of my favourites alreadyânamely Amaya and Raylaâbut I have no issues with the design of any of the characters. I also appreciated the amount of diversity among the characters. Of course, the humans in The Dragon Prince donât share our history or cultures, but itâs nice to see different skin colours, even if theyâre not attached to specific ethnicities. I also really enjoyed the design of the moonshadow elves, even though theyâre basically just Night Elves from World of Warcraft. Their voices in particular were a welcome change from the normally pompous or breathy way elves tend to speak in fantasy settings. Overall, the voice actors delivered a great performance, being able to convey emotions and concealed intentions through speech, whichâalong with great character writing and designsâmade the characters of The Dragon Prince complex, interesting and deserving of a more well-written narrative. I have to mention, though, that creature designs were subpar by comparison, childish in their design or unappealing to look at.
Iâve come to the conclusion that the writers and maybe the showrunners behind The Dragon Prince created and then developed the characters and premise long before ever writing a narrative for them. The signs are all there: the characters are incredibly well developed, but donât really feel like they belong in the world. The story is strong at the beginning of the season, but then meanders and feels disjointed right up until the end. There are some great moments here and there: Amayaâs fight with Rayla, the elven dagger, interactions between Viren and King Harrow...These moments teased at what could have been, but Iâm convinced that the writers had little to go on beyond extensive character profiles and an intricate political struggle. Any time the story focuses on anything substantial, it falters. The stakes never feel like they matter, and the tone shifts from dark to light-hearted from one scene to the next. A character might be afraid to lose their arm, and within seconds be comically afraid of the water. Thereâs no consistency in the tone, so itâs difficult to care about what happens to the characters, regardless of how appealing they are.
The tipping point for me was when Ezran fell into sub-zero water for way longer than a child should, and yet he came out feeling only slightly uncomfortable instead of dying from exposure. Iâm not one to judge realism in fiction, but when their father was just murdered and thereâs a chance that Rayla might lose a hand, I just couldnât buy into the story anymore. Things just got even more nonsensical from there. Thankfully, I had already checked out of the story at this point, so I didnât have to suspend my disbelief any longer. It was clear to me that the narrative was just a means to an endâa way for the writers to get from:
Point A â King Harrowâs death and the discovery of the egg, to
Point B â the egg hatching and Virenâs intentions made bare.
Everything else is just moments in time, sequences without any reason to be there except padding, strung together loosely to form a weak narrative. Itâs a shame because the script is at times brilliant, normally when characters interact in meaningful ways. Iâll always remember when Amaya goes to visit her sisterâs grave and Viren comes to reconcile with her, as well as the conversations between Callum and his step-father. Thereâs just nothing to support these moments, nothing to invest myself in beyond the quality of the characters themselves. As such, I have little interest in seeing where the story goes next, nor do I think itâs worth recommending the series.
Finally, I donât know if Iâm just getting out of touch with animation, but I personally donât understand the use of reduced frame-rates in 3D animation. I canât decide if itâs a budgetary decision or a stylistic one, but I donât like it either way. It reminds me of stop-motion animation, but without the inherent charm that kind of animation possesses. Or maybe itâs the lack of exaggeration as I donât remember a single instance where animation principles like squash and stretch were applied to exaggerate actions or emotions. The animators seemed more concerned with keeping the characters on model rather than in creating a visually engrossing work of animation. I think part of the reason I judge the animation so severely is that I attribute this style of animation with amateur video game machinima, especially films made in applications like Garryâs Mod. It feels unprofessional and underdeveloped. It doesnât help that everything except the character designs is bland and uninteresting. Characters stood out like actors on a poorly designed community stage, never really feeling a part of the world they inhabit. The only exception might be the magic effects, which were creative and fun to look at. Of course, my opinion on the visuals is highly subjective, so I canât fault the show for it.
However, I have no issue with criticizing its writing. I hope that the next season fares better in that department than the first. With its well developed characters, The Dragon Prince has the chance to break through popular culture to reach the same heights as Avatar: The Last Airbender, maybe even defining an entirely new generation of children. But they canât expect their characters to bear the full weight of that burden. These characters deserve an engrossing narrative, one which allows them to shine and interact in meaningful ways, to shape the world and to be shaped by the world around them. The Dragon Prince has a great foundation, but it has failed so far build on it. If the writers can expand on the political struggles that impressed so many within the first half of the season, I can only imagine what kind of show The Dragon Prince might become.

Did Zack Snyder Draw A Picture of Batman Going Down on Catwoman? An Investigation
Over the weekend, director Zack Snyderâa man who Mr. Magoo'd his way into having control over the cinematic presentation of DC Comics for many years and is an avowed fan of Batmanâposted an image of the Dark Knight performing cunnilingus on Catwoman. Since that time, I have not known peace. I must know who drew it.
Like the two women at the counter of the coffee shop where I bought the iced coffee that was necessary to begin this investigation, I am so desensitized to pornography involving cartoon characters that at first this image barely registered. The necessary context is that, apparently in response to the ongoing conversation about DC's decree that Batman canonically doesn't eat pussy, Snyder, who once directed a movie called Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and was for a long time as in control as anyone else was of DC lore, posted a drawing of Batman going down on Catwoman. He captioned it "canon." I guess!
As time went on, theories began to emerge about who drew the image. Snyder fansâand to be clear, he is a divisive figure in the multiple fandoms oriented toward and revolving around various DC brandsâpropose that he, personally, drew it. A major aspect of this theory is that Snyder didn't provide any information about the image when he posted it, at all. The image doesn't even have a signature. Running it through a reverse image search yields nothing from before Snyder posted it. The drawing seems to have appeared from the ether.
Representatives for Snyder didn't respond to requests for comment, leaving Motherboard unable to put the question of whether he drew this image of Batman satisfying his longtime love interest and occasional fiancĂŠ with his own hand. A Motherboard review of footage from the DVD extras of Watchmenâa movie directed by Snyder that I definitely saw in theaters and remember absolutely none ofâsuggests that Snyder is a talented draughtsman, and may well be capable of having drawn this image. We cannot definitively establish, though, whether or not he did so by putting the question directly to him, and so had to turn elsewhere in search of answers.Â
Logically, there are only so many options here. It's possible that, as some fans are beginning to think, Snyder drew it himself; it's also possible, though, that it's a panel from an existing comic book or a piece of fan art, whether preexisting or commissioned personally by Snyder. Roy T. Cook, a professor of philosophy at the University of Minnesota who specializes in the aesthetics of popular art, told Motherboard that it seems unlikely that it comes from something DC published.
"If this were from a comic, it would certainly be well known given its content, and hence would have been identified by fans or scholars by now," Cook said. "So itâs almost certainly a custom piece of art."
In theory this would narrow things down some, but the sheer ubiquity of Batman-related pornography means that there are still too many images to anyone to sift through. On the pornographic website Rule 34ânamed for the humorous "rule," which functions with the force and power of a basic law of physics, that anything that exists will also have porn of it on the internetâthere are more than 400 images with both the tags "Catwoman" and "Batman." The image Snyder posted can be found there, but was only added after he tweeted it, and notes Snyder's tweet as the original source. It is not hard at all to find an image of Batman eating out Catwoman. Finding one that no one has ever seen before is much harder.
It's possible to inferentially establish that this image is unique to Snyder, whether as something he commissioned or as something he had unique access to and chose to put on the internet. The question consuming many fans, though, is the one of whether he personally drew it. Experts in comic book art doubt that he did. Both of the comic-art brokers that responded to Motherboard's requests for comment said that they definitely don't think Snyder drew it. Details noted about the art style offer food for thought.
"I would say that [Frank] Miller is most certainly an influence/inspiration for the style of the image Snyder tweeted. Dark Knight Returns and all. Gritty stuff," Douglas Gillock, vice-president of the comic art brokerage ComicLink, said. (He was referring to the writer/artist whose mid-80s Batman comics set the tone for all the many, many grim and bleak interpretations of the billionaire who does kung-fu at muggers that have dominated pop culture for decades. Miller's Batman comics have been critiqued as fascistic but could also be read as brilliant parodies of fascistic excess; complicating the question is Miller's later-career turn toward things like a comic where Batman murdered Muslims to avenge 9/11, which was rejected by DC and subsequently repackaged as Holy Terror, a comic where a thinly-veiled Batman stand-in murdered Muslims.)Â "I would also say that I also see some David Mazzucchelli here. He was an artist that was also influenced by Miller. He did the art on the Batman: Year One run, which Miller wrote. Pretty sure that is where that particular iteration of Catwoman's costume came from in the modern era too. A similar version was used for the Paul Dini/Bruce Timm Batman animated series."
Gillock's interpretations seem correct. Notably, the outfit that Catwoman is wearing in the image that Snyder tweeted is purpleâthe color used in most Miller versions of the characterâwhile many popular depictions of the character have her wearing black. It also features cat ears, which not all of her costumes have; this design was favored by Miller and used not only in Year One, but in a special wedding issue of Batman written by Tom Kingâa renowned comic book writer who spent much of his run on Batman making it canonical that Batman and Catwoman fall in love and get married with the insistent energy of a Livejournal poster embroiled in a shipwarâand featuring a Miller drawing of Catwoman wearing this exact costume.Â
Snyder's Miller fandom cannot be overstated. He directed 300, based on the Miller graphic novel. He recreated scenes from The Dark Knight Returns in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in exactingly specific detail, even where it made no sense to do so. Like Miller, Snyder has used his work to promote and exult in vaguely fascist iconography. (Unlike Miller, for Snyder the appeal seems to be mostly aesthetic.) Snyder's fandom for Miller is so intense and specific that the details in the shading, the coloring, and the costumes depicted in the image of Batman face down in Catwoman's super soaker pussy stand out as ones a fan steeped in Miller's work would not only appreciate, but commission or create, if they were able to. Especially on Selina's legs and head, the specific way that the image is shaded looks a lot like the way that Miller draws Catwoman. In both Snyder's tweet and the image from King's Batman, the shading on Catwoman's suit consists of black swirls and circles. (Miller's image is a lot more stylized than what Snyder posted, though, with Catwoman's spine curving exaggeratedly, like an actual cat's would.)
It should be noted that one thing we know about Snyder is that he's a passable artist, at least from the storyboards he's released for a few of his films. According to a profile in Bloomberg, he studied painting for a year before transferring to film school. It's difficult to tell, but when I look at this blurry screenshot of one of Snyder's sketchbooks where he shows off a drawing he did of Watchmen's Silk Spectre kicking a Nazi in the back of the head, it kinda looks like the same general body proportions as Catwoman as she's getting eaten out by Batman. In particular, both Silk Spectre and Catwoman have pretty sturdy thighs, though comparing a fully colored and inked image to a sketch is not going to yield conclusive results.

DC, several art history professors, noted Snyder enthusiast Armond White, and Tom King did not respond to requests for comment. In absence of their authoritative input, as well as Snyder's, it seems Motherboard will never know for sure whether Zack Snyder spent the weekend drawing Batman eating box. But my friend and film critic Nadine Smith pointed out something important to me as I discussed this mystery with her: With any other director, this wouldn't even be a question. Snyder's fandom for comics, which somehow is for the exact opposite things about the genre that I admire, is nevertheless deep and powerful to the extent that he forced a major studio to release a four-hour uncut version of the Justice League fanfiction he filmed at a cost of hundreds of millions of dollars. He's always expected to do the most, and could not surprise anyone by doing anything that demonstrated the depth of his passion.
"If anyone else posted it, we would probably assume they just found some fanart," Smith told me. "But like, Snyder would."

Unique Ideas For Branding
Branding is all about selling trust in a product, service, or business by packaging it with the right perception, image, and identity. Successful businesses thrive on how much trust their brand (image/identity) can sell to customers. Business relationships are built on trust, and trust is rooted in the brand. Join us in this article as we discuss 9 Unique Branding Ideas to Consider in 2020.
For your business to stand the test of time, your customers must trust your brand. Trust wins loyal customers, and a businessâs brand is responsible for selling that trust.
In todayâs competitive world of marketing, more business owners have become increasingly aware of the marketing potential of branding. However, most of them do not have quality products or services on which to anchor their customerâs trust. As a result, companies that have quality products or services to offer are finding it increasingly difficult to get attention.
It is vital to take note that there already exist several brands in virtually every target market. As such, it is crucial to create a unique brand (image/identity) that is capable of selling your businessâs products/services and winning over customerâs trust.
Many business owners mistake branding for advertising and marketing. Because of this misconception, a lot of promising businesses get it wrong and lose out on chunks of potential customers. However, branding is not a marketing or advertising campaign.
While advertising/marketing campaigns seek to make customers and potential customers aware of new offerings by a company, branding pursues a different purpose. Ultimately, branding aims at creating (and maintaining) the right perception.
Your customers/prospects need to have a definitive impression about your business, its products, and services. That image/perception your customers have about your business âisâ your brand.
There are several reasons why you must brand your business effectively. The market competition is very fierce these days, and it takes more than a few strokes to get any attention. Branding, therefore, allows your business to stand out from the crowd.
Below is a list of fire branding ideas that will give your business against the competition. Remember, itâs about selling the right perception!
Unique Branding Ideas for in 2020
1. Define Your Archetype
Carl Jung, a renowned psychologist, conceptualized the concept of Archetype Branding. This strategy was adopted by several world-leading brands, including the likes of Apple, Microsoft, etc. and has been known to yield tremendous results.
Jungâs strategy poses that, to sell a definitive perception to your target customers, you should not only seek to âsellâ your products/services but also sell a âstoryâ along with it.
2. Re-examine Your Brand Values and Check Lapses
It is important to have defined brand values. Also, ensure that they include authenticity, credibility, and transparency. After incorporating these values, it is essential to analyze your performance and check for weak spots regularly.
After evaluating your brandâs weaknesses, try to improve on them consistently to increase your brand value. Meanwhile, keep it transparent; customers appreciate a brand that promotes an open brand/customer relationship.
3. Re-establish Your Identity
Your brand logo is your identity and the face of your business in your niche market and abroad. A mere casual drawing with some things scribbled on the image can tarnish your branding efforts. Your potential customers may easily take your brand as unprofessional and, therefore, untrustworthy.
4. Revaluate Your Social Media Strategy
Social media plays an essential role in any business, including start-ups, small businesses, and big businesses. Through platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, WhatsApp, etc., brands can tap into a vast stream of potential customers.
Effective branding on social media can help your company create connections and build a strong following of active-users around your products and services.
5. Invest in Creative/Compelling Brand Visual Content
Besides your brand logo, every single publication concerning your brand is an extended image of your business. They are also instrumental both for advertising and marketing campaigns. As such, you must be intentional about monitoring and putting out various kinds of definitive and compelling visual content across multiple platforms.
6. Start an Official Brand Website/Blog
Creating an official blog/website for your business is one of the best branding efforts you can offer your business. Owning an official blog early on gives you more advantages because it will quickly become popular, and new customers will easily find it.
As your business thrives, your brand will soon experience rip-offs, imitators, and spoilers both online and physically. Since you will not be able to tackle every case simultaneously, your customers must know exactly where to go for relevant brand information/education.
An official blog can serve as a medium to ensure your brandâs credibility and accountability over the previous and coming years.
7. Always Integrate Your Branding on Advertisements
Renew your advertisements frequently and make sure that all ads from your company carry the tone of your brand. Donât just send out adverts without re-examining them. Be intentional about every single item or piece of information that represents your brand, uniquely if it carries your logo. Review every detail as if the adverts themselves were a product; hence it should be brand-standard enough to compel buying actions.
8. Integrate Your Branding Into Your Email Marketing Campaigns
There are a few emails in my mailbox I just would not delete because of how they make me feel mentally present with the brand/company that sent them. Somehow, they managed to integrate the signature style and tone of the brand in almost every detail. I almost felt as if the entire company drove over to my house to deliver the mail.
Do not leave the potentials of emailing out of your branding campaignâs strategies, be creative. Just like your advertisements, you can take advantage of emails to deliver relevant information to your customers while leaving them with lasting impressions of/from your brand.
9. Leverage Customer Care Service
Your customer care service can play a very significant role in branding your business if you use it right. Ensure that there is consistency in the way your customers/visitors are attended to, bearing in mind that branding is all about selling perception.
Try to ensure that customers leave your care service with the right impression about your business even if they still have questions. For consistency, you can consider incorporating chatbots on your care channels and also explore other avenues as well.
Branding is the cornerstone of successful businesses. Despite increasing competition, if a company can sell trust in their brand, they can win the loyalty of customers more quickly. The unique blend of modern and time-proven branding strategies explained in this article will do an excellent job of strengthening the brand potentials of both start-ups and established companies long-term.
Hope you enjoy the process of learning and creating with the best digital marketing agency in Pune!

Adam Warski:Â âWriting down the main problems, challenges, use-cases helps to design the right abstractions.â
Adam Warski is one of the co-founders of SoftwareMill, where he codes mainly using Scala and other interesting technologies. He is involved in open-source projects, such as sttp, tapir, Quicklens, ElasticMQ and others. He has been a speaker at major conferences, such as JavaOne, LambdaConf, Devoxx and ScalaDays. Apart from writing closed- and open-source software, in his free time he tries to read the Internet on various (functional) programming-related subjects. Any ideas or insights usually end up with a blog.
What are the highlights of your software engineering career? How did you get into your current area, and what's the most interesting thing about it for you? What made you especially prepared for your work?
The highlight of my career is definitely being part of SoftwareMill, and as that is still unfolding, I expect the most exciting parts might be still ahead! We've been evolving the company for the last 11 years, starting with no business knowledge and not long after finishing university, so as you might expect we've made a couple of mistakes and learned a lot along the way.
On the technical side, we've evolved from JEE/JBoss-focused software consultancy towards being oriented on Scala (with some "modern" Java as well), functional programming, distributed systems and ML. That's a big jump, and making that jump consciously - that is, understanding *why* a given technology or programming style is "better" - takes quite a lot of work. But also serves as great material for blogs or conference talks!
A key theme that unites the best SBTB talks is Thoughtful Programming. Can you describe some situations where you stepped back and rethought your approach? Where you needed better or higher abstractions? How do the choices of technology help you being thoughtful?
Programming styles vary from person to person, so I think this might be a matter of personal preference, but given any non-trivial task I always like to layout the approach using (analogue) pen & paper. Writing down the main problems, challenges, use-cases helps to design the right abstractions. Of course, most of the time unforeseen problems arise when half-way implementing the designed solution, which means going back to the drawing board.
I think the work we're doing on sttp client is a good case study. In itself, sttp client wraps "lower-level" HTTP clients with a programmer-friendly (and that's the emphasis of the project) API. So all of the hard work is delegated to other libraries, such as akka-http, async-http-client or Java's HttpClient. Still, it turns out that even such a not-very-complicated problem as sending HTTP requests isn't that trivial to model. Since we are working on version 3 right now, that means at least 2 major "step backs" rethinking some of the design basics (and causing major, backwards-incompatible changes).
Libraries are in a somewhat special position when it comes to thoughtful programming, as they need to serve a wide range of use-cases. And even simple things - or things that *should* be simple - need a lot of thought, so that they don't end up unnecessarily complex or surprising for the audience: the programmers using the API.
How do tools and devops infrastructure affect your life day to day? How do you see developers and operators (devops) working together in the future? What needs to be done to improve it on your end?
I think I'll need to build a better tolerance towards YAML, and they'll need to build better tolerance towards programming languages. There's a lot of research and practice that went into programming language development, and it's painful to see all of it be discarded with forcibly using and abusing YAML for everything.
That said, I do understand the appeal of YAML's perceived simplicity, declarativness and (to some degree) readability. But I'd hope that at some point it becomes obvious that we need some means of abstraction. I'd go with functional programming of course, but I'm open to being persuaded otherwise as well. There's definitely room for improvement and finding middle ground here.
"Cloud-Native" computing as it first emerged is operator-centric. It's getting easier to run the clouds themselves. Does it get easier for developers to build apps on top of these new clouds? What kind of abstractions are needed to develop the Cloud-Native Applications of tomorrow?
I think that especially the Kubernetes ecosystem is great in its capabilities and flexibility for really large deployments and large organizations, where there's a good business reason for the operational costs of this platform, and where it makes sense to have a DevOps team taking care of the K8S installation.
On the other end of the spectrum, the needs for small-scale applications are also quite well met with solutions such as Heroku, Netlify or simply AWS.
However, the needs for medium-sized projects, where it already makes sense to develop multiple microservices (or "midiservices"), is not yet well served. These are projects which will have a couple of microservices, but not hundreds; where it's beneficial to use a service mesh, but the DevOps team is small. There are some new projects which try to address this niche, but I think there's no clear leader yet.
What are some of the ways we can make the best lemonade out of the lemons of online-only setup this year? How do you plan to make the best of it?
That's a good question! I don't know. We've been organizing an online conference this year as well, and it is a challenge. Even being a stereotypical programmer-caveman, I do appreciate the networking opportunities that conferences gave us. The talks are easy to move into the virtual space, but the hallway is much more problematic. But we've got to try to make the best out of it.
What are some other talks that you're eager to see at SBTB, and which ones look like good companions for yours?
There's quite a lot that seem interesting, so as always it's not an easy pick. For sure, I'll listen to the Twitter talks (how their API got redesigned, and ML using Scala 3), as Twitter is both an early Scala adopter, and if anybody, they do have a lot of traffic to handle. So this should be interesting even taking into account only the distributed systems aspect.
I also saw some Rust talks, which I'd like to learn more about, but have never put enough time to see if it's a good fit for functional programming. Finally, there are some talks about GraphQL, TypeScript, Haskell and smart contracts - it's always good to be up-to-date as to what's happening outside your bubble.
Do not miss Adam Warski and his "Project Loom? Better Futures? Whatâs next for JVM concurrent programming" at Scale By the Bay on November 12. Tickets are available so book yours now.

Some cats scratch furniture: cardboard scratchers, and carpeted steps. For instance, if you look at as many as possible.Be guided by a cat scratcher that hangs over the dry material by brushing or vacuuming it.He had been gone for up to turn more easily.
