Pone Reviews 65: Call of the Cutie SEASON 8 IS HERE I'M EXCITED AREN'T YOU EXCITED Anyway, welcome to a brand new Pone Reviews! As I wait for high-res images from the new episode to hit the web, I bring you an episode from the first season of this wonderful show. We're getting nostalgic with a review of "Call of the Cutie!" Let's jump right in! To begin, an old-fashioned moral. "The thing you think might lose you friends could be the thing that actually gains you friends." Now THIS was where the lessons started to get meta. Folks, are you embarrassed about your love of a franchise devoted to pastel-colored horses? What about your sexuality? Or maybe that weird hobby of yours? Well, whatever it is, it might earn you some new friends. Apple Bloom found best friendships in Sweetie Belle and Scootaloo because of their mutual blank flanks. She never thought her blank flank could get her so far. She and her friends show that you shouldn't be afraid of your weird quirks. There is always somebody else who likes bungee jumping or collecting dolls or breeding squirrels. If anything, it is a message encouraging acceptance. It is hard to find those people who share your unusual interests if you can't accept that aspect of yourself. In Apple Bloom's case, she learned to accept her blank flank after meeting Sweetie Belle and Scootaloo, but let's be real, this isn't a common thing. Accept yourself! Others will accept you for it. Now for the plot. Diamond Tiara has invited Apple Bloom to her cute-ceañera, and Apple Bloom feels the need to earn a cutie mark before she goes. What will she do? And here we have an episode that started a movement. Apple Bloom, if it hasn't been made clear enough, is OBSESSED with getting her cutie mark. She will stop at nothing until she has a picture on her butt. Turns out she's not the only one! Sweetie Belle and Scootaloo also long for cutie marks (though not to the extent of Apple Bloom, it seems). Their meeting at the cute-ceañera was the founding of the Cutie Mark Crusaders. They have since become equally as popular as the Mane 6, and for good reason. We're always curious about their cutie mark search - will it happen this time? They've taught our heroes some important lessons about friendship. They've probably given some of us with younger (and older) siblings some relatability. And their voice actresses are awesome! Seriously. I met them at Everfree Northwest a couple years back and watched them during ACRacebest and Saberspark's Hooves Line panel. It was a hoot. I'm so happy these fillies' journey has been just as impactful as their elders'. And here was where it all began. Here are some more memorable moments from this episode: *Apple Bloom's shock when she sees Twist's cutie mark says it all. I do like Twist. The earning of her cutie mark was also foreshadowed at the beginning when she offers Apple Bloom her candy, so I can't say it was out of place. *The fact that Twilight tries to conjure a cutie mark and almost succeeds shows her magical prowess early on. It's similar to when she struggled in "It Isn't The Mane Thing About You," when she and Starlight struggled to cast mane-generating spells. How powerful was Twilight when she was a unicorn?! *Another adorable short Pinkie song. *BAI SUM APPHULS *It's the first significant appearance of Doctor Hooves! *Those cupcakes look amazingly delicious. All the food in this show looks amazingly delicious! Even the horse-exclusive food! And here are some not-so-memorable moments from this episode: *Honestly... the whole training sequence with Rainbow Dash was a bit cringy. *Cheerilee woke up with a cutie mark. That is some bull right there! *Pretty sure Diamond Tiara has never been more savage. In my opinion, she wasn't necessarily being savage in "Flight to the Finish," she was just stating facts about Scootaloo. *Apple Bloom, I love you, but WHY did you agree to go to your bully's party? *The CMC huddled under the table together in "Friendship is Magic, Part 1"... yet they apparently meet for the first time here. *Literally no one noticed Sweetie Belle and Scootaloo obviously under the punch table. Also did they know each other before the party or did they also meet for the first time before meeting Apple Bloom? In conclusion: A classic episode with a useful moral and blank flanks, blank flanks, blank flanks. Buy some apples! 4.5 out of 5 rainbows 🌈🌈🌈🌈% That'll do it for today's Pone Reviews. Join me tomorrow for the long-awaited Pone Review of "School Daze, Part 1 and 2!" Diamond out!
